In 2024, increased adoption of biometric surveillance systems, such as the use of AI-powered facial recognition in public places and access to government services, will spur biometric identity theft and anti-surveillance innovations. Individuals aiming to steal biometric identities to commit fraud or gain access to unauthorized data will be bolstered by generative AI tools and the abundance of face and voice data posted online.
Already, voice clones are being used for scams. Take for example, Jennifer DeStefano, a mom in Arizona who heard the panicked voice of her daughter crying “Mom, these bad men have me!” after receiving a call from an unknown number. The scammer demanded money. DeStefano was eventually able to confirm that her daughter was safe. This hoax is a precursor for more sophisticated biometric scams that will target our deepest fears by using the images and sounds of our loved ones to coerce us to do the bidding of whoever deploys these tools.
In 2024, some governments will likely adopt biometric mimicry to support psychological torture. In the past, a person of interest might be told false information with little evidence to support the claims other than the words of the interrogator. Today, a person being questioned may have been arrested due to a false facial recognition match. Dark-skinned men in the United States, including Robert Williams, Michael Oliver, Nijeer Parks, and Randal Reid, have been wrongfully arrested due to facial misidentification, detained and imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. They are among a group of individuals, including the elderly, people of color, and gender nonconforming individuals, who are at higher risk of facial misidentification.
Generative AI tools also give intelligence agencies the ability to create false evidence, like a video of an alleged coconspirator confessing to a crime. Perhaps just as harrowing is that the power to create digital doppelgängers will not be limited to entities with large budgets. The availability of open-sourced generative AI systems that can produce humanlike voices and false videos will increase the circulation of revenge porn, child sexual abuse materials, and more on the dark web.
By 2024 we will have growing numbers of “excoded” communities and people—those whose life opportunities have been negatively altered by AI systems. At the Algorithmic Justice League, we have received hundreds of reports about biometric rights being compromised. In response, we will witness the rise of the faceless, those who are committed to keeping their biometric identities hidden in plain sight.
Because biometric rights will vary across the world, fashion choices will reflect regional biometric regimes. Face coverings, like those used for religious purposes or medical masks to stave off viruses, will be adopted as both fashion statement and anti-surveillance garments where permitted. In 2019, when protesters began destroying surveillance equipment while obscuring their appearance, a Hong Kong government leader banned face masks.
In 2024, we will start to see a bifurcation of mass surveillance and free-face territories, areas where you have laws like the provision in the proposed EU AI Act, which bans the use of live biometrics in public places. In such places, anti-surveillance fashion will flourish. After all, facial recognition can be used retroactively on video feeds. Parents will fight to protect the right for children to be “biometric naive”, which is to have none of their biometrics such as faceprint, voiceprint, or iris pattern scanned and stored by government agencies, schools, or religious institutions. New eyewear companies will offer lenses that distort the ability for cameras to easily capture your ocular biometric information, and pairs of glasses will come with prosthetic extensions to alter your nose and cheek shapes. 3D printing tools will be used to make at-home face prosthetics, though depending on where you are in the world, it may be outlawed. In a world where the face is the final frontier of privacy, glancing upon the unaltered visage of another will be a rare intimacy.

Side note: I have minimal idea how international negotiations work, but here goes!
When the Justice League saw the treaty the Ghost King proposed, they were mildly alarmed but assumed that some of the lines were there as bargaining chips. That’s how negotiation works after all.
But the King asked for Gotham. Not for an embassy in Gotham, but Gotham itself. For it’s people, it’s land, it’s industry. It would remain physically in the living world but be considered part of the Infinite Realms.
Two months after the treaty proposal, the US had sat down with the King and his team with a UN mediator in Gotham to negotiate. Most of the JL and some of the JLD were here watching the proceedings. Even Constantine was here. The League kept glancing over at the bats. They seemed very calm about this all so far. The League had offered to help early on but the Bats had all rebuffed them, saying that it was well in hand.
The line about Gotham being ceded to the Realms passed uncontested. Even the dissolution of the GIW and Anti-Ecto Acts got a rebuttal.
The bats were still calm. Only a handful were out in the city. Red Robin, Oracle, Signal, and Red Hood (if you counted him as a Bat, many on the League thought him too violent) were the group left to defend the city.
Negotiations continued. No one on the US side argued for Gotham.
A break was called. No one argued for Gotham.
Some of media asked if there was a representative for Gotham present - the first to argue for Gotham. The media rep was looking toward where the League was sat, specifically the Bats when a woman appeared. Dark-skinned, dressed in a black 1920s flapper dress and tall, thin heels the same color just barely short enough to not be stilettos. Everything about her seemed oddly sharp. She had a long cigarette that seemed lit but gave off no actual smoke. She seems soaking wet, as if she’d walked 10 blocks in pouring rain, but dripped no water and seemed perfectly comfortable in the air conditioned building. As she moved toward the media, she nodded at the bats. And the bats nodded back.
“I speak for Gotham.” Her voice sounded somehow both melodic and as if someone had put gravel in a blender. There was a hint of humor there too, as if she found something about her statement funny.
Constantine drew in a sharp breath. “Is that-?”
“Yes.” Batman cut him off.
“In your cursed city?! Bloody hell! No wonder you’re so calm about all this!”
“Constantine?” Diana asked, “Please explain?”
Zatana was the one to explain instead. “That’s a City Spirit, specifically Gotham’s. They’re rarely that solid. It takes an immense amount of power to do so. For a normal, uncursed city, like, say, Metropolis for example, it would take about an 85% consensus on what they were appearing to speak on. But Gotham, Gotham’s really, really, really cursed. To gather that much power it would take her an, at minimum, 98% consensus. Probably more. I don’t know if it would even be possible for her if we were outside of Gotham. And power gathered per percentage point of consensus is exponential. Her coming here to speak like this has more weight than if a politician held up a 99% vote on a referendum that’s already been checked for voter fraud by a third party that in turn was audited for corruption two weeks later in a regularly scheduled surprise audit by a randomly selected trusted audit company.”
DPXDC prompt ~ Honor to Us All ~ Gotham as one true the most haunted city edition
~~~~~
Instead of a welcoming banner in front of a city was an old column, so familiar to a boy, with a warning inscription:
"To outsiders mad enough to attack Gotham: You will be forced to understand that dead soldiers will also go into battle. And having risen to protect, they will be ready to perish all again, So no one of the living would die near them."
Danny smiled with love. 'I’m home, Mother.' Ghost whispered into the void. And Gotham answered.
~~~~
Danny: My Lady, I brought you the crown of Pariah Dark. And The Ring of Rage. They’re gifts to honor the Gotham family. Lady Gotham: The greatest gift and honor is having you on my side, child.
~~~~~
Danny Fenton was born in Gotham and lived here until his parents decided to move. The city didn’t accept them.
'When I die, I want to be one of the Gotham Knights.' Little Danny with pride and eagerly reported to his parents after visiting the Battle Glory of Gotham Museum on a school trip. This evening, Danny learned that not all his plans should be told to his parents.
Danny know his parents are crazy about ghosts. and that all ghosts are "bad". But obviously, the ghosts they talk about, and his, or rather Gotham's, ghosts are completely different creatures. The spirits of the defenders are those who, even in the darkest of times, make the shadows of the Gotham a protection to the citizens.
But that knowledge is his little secret for now. Because if he starts arguing he’ll be punished and he won’t be able to run off to the roof where he’s arranged to meet Robin. Robin’s cool! He works with one of the 'still-living' knights. And he knows more about the city than anyone. Danny doesn’t want to offend his friend.
~~~~~
Mr Lancer doesn’t understand why the lecturer about ghosts, Constantine, after seeing Danny, said something about the bloody gothamites and their inability to stay underground. It wasn’t nice at all. Mr Lancer doesn’t blame Mr Fenton for smiling at the man a little aggressive and viciously. Poor boy probably didn’t know how to respond to his behavior. Danny moved to Amity Park a long time ago and did not stand out at all. So what was this man’s problem?
Danny only half dies because Lady Gotham blessed him when he was a child. So when Danny sees snow-white hair and glowing green eyes in the mirror, he is not frightened but surprised that the Lady protected him even though he is not living in Gotham now.
~~~~~
Danny knows gothamites don’t consider that Gotham is a part of the USA. Even their Metropolis neighbors are just pathetic cowards, unable to withstand the hardships of life. No, really. Why the hell would they be patriots of the country that thinks they’re its dirty secret? This opinion is shared by old ones and children, rich ones and residents of Crime Alley, heroes and villains.
Danny loves Gotham. And he likes local jokes about how if one of their supervillains ever took power enough to threaten the government, he would be obliged to release them from that citizenship. Otherwise, he would be shamed and ridiculed by the inhabitants.
Phantom is not a villain. But for Gotham? For their common purpose? He is ready to pretend to be.
~ A ghost can bring his city ~ Great honor in one way ~
Gothamites remember that the child of mad scientists was the only person Boy Wonder was willing to call a friend. They remember how boys' laughter was heard from rooftops and from alleys on particularly dark nights. And they know whose restless spirit has returned to mourn the death of the second Robin.
The boy’s parents must be fools. Many outsiders are. They call their blessing a curse. People die in Gotham. And not all of them come back. Residents know that these ones are chosen by Lady Gotham herself.
The public enemy of Amity Park number 1? What nonsense. He is not theirs anything! In Gotham they will accept the Phantom as a guard, as a silent shadow, as a villain or a hero. In any kind. Because he belongs here. He should be part of their dance between life and death. He should be amidst dark alleys and acid rains, gliding between fear and laughter in the air.
Even local villains experience strange yearning. Like something’s wrong. Like a piece of a puzzle that’s lost. Therefore, the local abandoned observatory is empty, and none of them is in a hurry to call it their territory. Because it will be in demand, it will be loved and needed. It’s only a matter of time.
Let the spirit of Gotham guide you home, child. Dead gothamite is still gothamite. Which means there will always be a place for you.
~~~~~
When Danny first enters his favorite cafe in his Phantom form and with a wound on his leg, he doesn’t expect a cleaning lady to yell at him immediately for the blood on the floor. With a mop in his hands and with already bandaged leg, Danny feels as if all his worries had gone. They are not afraid of him. Of course. No one in Gotham would avoid him because of glowing eyes and sharp teeth. And that’s nice.
The waitress throws a tray of food on a table next to him: Welcome dinner for the wandering son of the alley. Red Hood said it's your usual order. He’ll be waiting for you on the gargoyle. You should know which one.
~~~~
If parents listened to his childhood stories about good ghosts, they would know that the Phantom is not special. He is not an anomaly of ghost nature and not a mistake. He is one of many who always were and will be defenders of the city. Danny stands in front of the costume that he admired years ago. He's ready to take another shift at work. The remains of his colleagues can rest quietly this night. Lady will wake them only when in dire need.
Lift. A movie I watched on Netflix. It’s about a team of con artists planning a heist. I enjoyed it, fairly true to the heist movie/show themes. I should really finish the next season of leverage. The new one, I already watched the old one. Love that show.
Plus and Minus. Appears to be a cute romance story so far. Highschool friends to lovers I think. Still on episode one so I shall see.
Mr. Queen. Seems really fun. Same actor from zombie detective is in this one. Though it’s mainly his voice that’s there. I love how expressive the characters are and how well the actors bring out their characters personalities. They all feel so natural and fun.
History 3: trapped. Love this show. A mafia member and police detective have a long standing rivalry as they try to figure out the murder of a parental figure. As they clash and fight these other two lovely side characters have such fun. Honestly, just a nice fun show. (Still has police and mafia stuff though so there is violence, etc.)
History 5: love in the future. So far it seems interesting and fun. I’ve only watched a couple episodes and am currently unable to watch the rest so I’m not sure if it has a happy ending.
Blue Period. I read the manga, haven’t fully watched the show yet. I love the manga and from what I’ve seen of the show I think it’s gonna be good. A Highschool boy floating through life gets introduced to the world of art. What will he discover there?
Yuri on Ice. I finally finished this show. Love it. Beautiful animation and powerful emotions shine throughout it. A sports anime about ice skating. Yuri, a skater who recently took a break from skating due to a crushing defeat, returns to the rink. A famous skater makes an entrance, claiming to be Yuri’s new coach. Oh what will happen now?
Insect detective. So far so interesting. I don’t totally vibe with the romance in this show but otherwise I think it’s pretty good. The way they discuss insects and investigate crimes is quite interesting. While some bugs make me squeamish so it can be difficult to watch if bugs bother you. There is violence and it is a detective show so crimes and unalives happen in it. The characters all have fun connections, especially the insect guy and police crew.
The silent criminal. I’ve only seen clips from this show but it seems fun. The main trio seems to have a highly amusing dynamic. A man disguised himself as a soldier (? Not exactly that but I can’t remember the name of it right now) to uncover the corrupted mess of the current government. Or, a fake guard, a cowardly detective (not really cowardly but I couldn’t think of a better word), and a bandit walk into a tavern. And something happens… imma assume chaos and honestly it just looks really interesting.
Anti fraud league. I have no idea what this one’s about. I’ve seen clips but otherwise not a clue. The main characters seem interesting and fun.
The mysterious class. A class of Highschool boys discover that one of them is in fact, not real. There’s a ghost among the students, but who could it be? I liked this one. Made me cry.
Ah there was this one super cute Chinese drama I watched a while ago. I can’t remember its name though so I shall describe it in hope someone may know what it was. So this guy travels back in time but then the thing that sent him back breaks. So he’s stuck. He gets taken in by this woman’s family and so he helps them out against the rival lands. He was super charismatic and upbeat. An inventor from the future gets sent back in time only to get stuck. The last thing I remember was the he had built one of the planes like the weight brothers made to help escape over a chasm? I’m not sure. If anyone knows what this is please let me know. Have a wonderful day/night!
No doubt many will dismiss this characterization as an exaggeration, which is one way Trump gets away with this stuff. But no, the speakers for this ReAwaken America event, which was co-founded by former Trump aide and current QAnon celebrity Michael Flynn, really are that terrible. Podcaster Scott McKay told his audience last year, "Hitler was actually fighting the same people that we're trying to take down today," and blamed Jews for 9/11. Right wing commentator Charlie Ward posted a Hitler speech with the caption "Hitler was warning us about the ruling class" of "Freemasonry, Judaism, Communism, Globalism, Race Wars, NWO, the Cabal & the Bankers."
In neither case can these be waved off as a one-off (as if that would excuse it.) Media Matters has lengthy dossiers on both men, showing long histories of antisemitism, Holocaust denial, and championing Hitler as a brave truthteller. They are scheduled to speak alongside Eric Trump and his wife Lara Trump. The conference found, Flynn, has also promoted antisemitism and blamed Jewish victims for their own deaths in the Holocaust.
The tour isn't just about Hitler apologism, of course. As the Anti-Defamation League explains, ReAwaken America also features "prominent QAnon influencers, anti-vaxx activists, election fraud conspiracy theorists, Christian pastors, political candidates and elected officials." A real grab bag of the worst people in the country!
I respectfully disagree
A lot of people, Palestinians and Israelis not included, thought Oct. 7th was a revolutionary uprising, and that it was a step towards Palestinian freedom. However, this is not at all the case. Hamas is a terrorist organization and not concerned about the freedom of Palestinians. They have expressed that their mission is to literally kill Jews, and there has been a 337% surge in antisemitism since the attack.
Addressing the actual point of your post, the reason people are saying that you could be killed for being queer in Gaza is not because of Israel targeting anyone. It’s because of Hamas. Hamas is a terrorist organization dedicated to killing Jews, at the expense of Palestinians. They likely came into power by violent force or fraud, according to some sources.
A lot of older Republicans, as well as a lot of younger Democrats, have taken extremes based on what they see on social media, often to the point of antisemitism. The reason so many Palestinians are dying is that Hamas has absolutely no concern for the lives of innocent Palestinians.
The IDF is trying to root Hamas out of the general Palestinian population, but that’s really hard to do. This results in the death of civilians who have stayed as martyrs, or just stayed because they have no choice.
But to be clear, the reason this is happening isn’t that Israel just wants Gazans to die, nor because Israel is “occupying” Gaza, in fact, they left Gaza completely in 2005. More info here: Post-10/7 Cheat Sheet | JewBelong (this contains a lot of truth, I’d check it out if you want to further understand my perspective).
Israel’s actions are not that of attack, but of defense. After the 10/7 attacks, which resulted in the largest death of Jews since the Holocaust, the Israeli government needed to make sure that it didn’t happen again.
History
Another thing to note is that the land historically belongs to Israel, and Israel is not a colonization project. Both sides have a right to the land, but it’s important to know about the history of the conflict first. The Jews are indigenous to Israel. There are countless documents proving this, and the fact that I exist as a descendant of the tribe of Levi proves it. The thing is, ancient Israel had enemies and was invaded and taken over countless times by various nations, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Fatimids, Seljuk Turks, Crusaders, Egyptians, Mamelukes, Islamists, and others.
Around the period when the Romans ruled Israel (more info here), in an effort to mock the Jews, whom they oppressed and treated as second-class citizens, they renamed Palestine after the Philistines, who were the enemies of the ancient Israelites.
Around that time, a group of Arabs were living there. For context, the Arabs are a major colonizing force in the Middle East and amassed both the Middle East and Northern Africa, with 22 countries total, and there are only 17 countries in the Middle East and 21 in the total MENA (Middle East and North Africa region), according to these sources.
After the Zionist movement of the 1890s picked up steam over the following 50 years, the UN decided to give Israel their land back, but the Arabic people living there also had a right to it and were being forcibly removed from their homes. More info here.
After Israel had reached self-determination, Palestine teamed up with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, and tried to get the land back, but failed.
Hamas Violence
Since then, there have been two intifadas, resulting in the death of 1,400 Israelis, and several bombings, which killed Israeli children. Despite being wary of the Palestinian government and resistance movements, after Israel started attacking Gaza, even though Egypt and Jordan, the neighboring countries, closed their borders, Israel opened theirs to the Palestinian people.
Hamas has continued using Palestinian civilians as human shields. According to the New York Times, a left-leaning source, Hamas is benefitting from the killing of innocent Palestinians. One could argue that it is Hamas, whose goal is expressly to eradicate the Jewish people, is the genocidal group here, not Israel, who is taking necessary defense actions.
While Gazans Suffer, Hamas Reaps the Benefits, https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/08/world/middleeast/hamas-israel-gaza-war.html
According to the same source, Hamas has been using sexual violence as a weapon and raping Jewish Israeli women, (Sources: Source 1, Source 2) who have not been believed by many because people think that Hamas is a freedom force, but they are not by any means a freedom force. Sexual violence should never be minimized or brushed off as fake for the sake of false progressivism.
These documents were published not by a person sitting at a desk in Middle America, but by an actual reporter in the Middle East who has lived and reported there for over a decade and speaks Arabic.
Antisemitism
If you don’t read anything else, read this. Actually, read the last two paragraphs and then read this, those are really important.
Comparing the defensive actions of the Israeli government to genocide or calling Israel an apartheid state can be antisemitic, especially when taken to extremes. (Amnesty International Claim That Israel Is An Apartheid State Is Recklessly Ill-Informed | AJC Why Anti-Zionism is Antisemitism 5 Reasons Why the Events in Gaza Are Not “Genocide” | AJC) Also, it’s just overall disrespectful and at times, triggering, to the Jewish people to compare the actions of the only Jewish country, our ancestral homeland, to that of the same people who killed our ancestors.
The Jewish people and the state of Israel have a right to self-determination, as do the Palestinians, so it's important to become educated and not just be wrapped in fringe politics that you got your understanding of from popular opinions on Tiktok without knowing exactly what's going on, and instead know what the terms mean so that you're not being antisemitic or at least just blindly following the crowd.
Even with everything going on, it's important to note that it's not Israel as a whole that should be eradicated, because they also have a very fair claim to the land, although the Palestinians do as well because they can't just pack their bags.
Additionally, I would like to address the tag “free Palestine.” After this huge essay, I’ve said enough about why Israel isn’t a colonizing force, and how Hamas is actually the oppressor, but I would also like to address the chant “from the river to the sea.” Not a lot of people actually know which river or which sea they’re talking about, because they mostly just get enraged at the perceived injustices going on without actually being informed, which seems biased to say, but this is actually the case with many people.
The Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea is Israel’s land. I’m sure the people who started the chant know this, but by chanting that, you are literally calling for the eradication of the only Jewish state to exist. This is antisemitic for a number of reasons, but if they’re not immediately apparent, the American Jewish Committee has an antisemitism glossary in which it explains it. From the River to the Sea | #TranslateHate | AJC 7 Ways Some Anti-Israel Protests Have Spread Antisemitism | AJC
There's definitely fairness in criticizing Bibi, but It’s important to know what’s going on and how not to be antisemitic while formulating your own opinions. I hope this helped educate some people.
Side note: Also, if you respond, please address the bigger picture and not just irrelevant mistakes. I doubt you would do this but just in general, I put a lot of time into writing this and I would appreciate it if people addressed the main points
"You would be killed in Palestine for being queer"
No.
I would be killed in Palestine for being alive. Do you think Israel is looking for Cis strait people to kill? No.
They are killing everyone. Tearing apart families, friends, and they will not stop.
The United States government is giving Israel money to fund this genocide. We need to make some fucking noise.
And if your think, for a fucking second, that homophobia is worse then genocide. Then you need to figure out why you are fine with murder.
Part II
Last Song: am currently listening to my playlist with just everything so i have Andrew Belle’s The Enemy playing right now (also I only just now realized that Andrew Belle also sings Pieces which is one of my fave songs? my bff linked that to me after it played in some tv series she was watching)
Last Movie Last Stream: i didn’t want to mention the same movie again or skip this question and i’ve wanted to talk about this anyway so! i watched Liu Chang’s bday live last night :’D it was so much fun even if i couldn’t understand anything. it was just nice to watch him being himself and have fun and chill with his fans. also the songs were amazing ;; i cried with Liu Sang’s character song as well as the ending. and all the while i couldn’t turn my gaze away from his eyes! he has such pretty eyes and they were absolutely Sparkling throughout the whole stream, it was so nice :’)
Currently Reading: Devotions by Mary Oliver (i adore her poems! they’re a very nice change after Siken haha) and then some uni stuff for a course about culture and mental health plus my thesis
Currently Watching: Douluo Continent, Word of Honor, The Long Ballad
Word of Honor again has reached the ending and i just hold my breath with it. am not too far gone with it so i am not getting as heavy feelings about it as i probably could but i enjoy it alot still and i do cry at times ^^ and then The Long Ballad has just blown me away! i didn’t expect to love it this much and be this invested in it but everything about it has been such a positive surprise and it keeps making me super emotional! i love the characters and the story and the romances even! it’s a great accomplishment for me. also yes i cry on the daily bc of hao du and bc of ashile sun’s hair haha
(i am also rewatching Ultimate Note kind of and been thinking about getting into rewatching Reboot bc it has been on my list ever since i finished it)
What is antipoetry to you: okay hmm i had to google this too and have to agree with Kiddo here. i don’t have strong feelings about poetry tbh, i wasn’t into poetry that much before maybe a bit over year ago? Siken has really blown me away haha. but i have always loved song lyrics which i never thought as poetry but then Kiddo said to me that they consider them poetry and yeah ok. i agree? so idk poetry can be whatever i suppose. i’ve never seen any rules in it anyway. i know there are many rules for different types of poetry but then again. i feel like poetry has always been just words put together to feel things and i guess that is the core purpose of every written type of art in the end right?
Currently craving: a drama as good and as personal as The Journey Across the Night. that show really just stole my heart and i want that feeling back. i think about that show every day. i miss Li Jia and his two partners. i miss the vibes. i miss sitting on my floor watching it and just sobbing my heart out haha. also! craving a properly subbed, whole version of Anti-Fraud League. only the first 12 eps are badly subbed out there. wetv has... blocked? deleted? the whole show??? i need it to my life, i wanna see Xiao Yuliang being cute as Mi Ruo and i wanna know where the story goes smh
thank you so much for these both! i had fun ^^ also am sorry this is so long but haha if you’re asking me to talk about myself and my interests then this is what you get :)
tagging (to do which ever part you want or both!): @cross-d-a @jockvillagersonly @humanlighthouse @kholran @xcziel @minmoyu and @leonzhng ♥
#tag game#this was so much fun ok#also yes am an emotional mess#especially when it comes to liu chang/liu sang#and if anyone has any knowledge#about anti-fraud league#then am all ears???#thank you for tagging me!!
Aditiya Baradwaj joined crypto-trading firm Alameda Research when it was run out of an anonymous first-floor office in downtown Berkeley, California. It was September 2021, and the day Baradwaj arrived, Sam Bankman-Fried, the company’s founder, was sitting in the middle of the trading floor playing League of Legends. By then, Bankman-Fried was already more than a crypto billionaire. Alameda was a whale in crypto markets; FTX, the exchange Bankman-Fried had started in 2019, had more than a million customers. FTX’s latest funding round, in July 2021, had raised nearly $1 billion from A-list investors that included Sequoia and SoftBank.
Bankman-Fried was an unlikely poster boy for the industry: mop-haired, academic, exuding on screen a kind of nerdy anti-charisma that set him apart from the brashness of the crypto world. He was also, famously, a proponent of effective altruism—a philosophy that espouses making money to give it away. He wasn’t just a crypto booster; he was making billions of dollars to save the world, and Baradwaj found that compelling. “It’s kind of a noble mission,” Baradwaj says. “And it’s contrary to the mission of a lot of trading firms … where, you know, the goal is just like, ‘make money.’”
Within months, Baradwaj was on FTX’s rocket ship. Alameda’s headquarters was in Hong Kong; Bankman-Fried and FTX were in the process of moving their operation to the Bahamian capital, Nassau. Staff moved freely between the two. There were parties and conferences with celebrities and political leaders that helped cement the companies’ status. “Sam’s face was on the cover of Forbes. And, you know, everyone was calling him a genius,” Baradwaj says. “It made it very easy to believe that we were part of something really unique and special, and that it was going to keep going, and it was never going to end.”
But according to a complaint by the US Department of Justice, by the time Baradwaj joined Alameda, the company was already using customers’ deposits to fund its own trading—behavior that, as crypto markets tanked in 2022, would ultimately lead to FTX’s bankruptcy, to hundreds of thousands of customers losing their investments, and to criminal charges against Bankman-Fried, Alameda CEO Caroline Ellison, and other senior figures at both companies. Behind the collapse of the exchange is, allegedly, one of the largest financial frauds in history, one in which Bankman-Fried and his inner circle deceived not only ordinary punters, but venture capitalists, institutional investors, and sovereign wealth funds—and people who worked for them. Several Alameda and FTX executives have already pleaded guilty to various charges of fraud and conspiracy. Bankman-Fried goes on trial in New York tomorrow. The trial is likely to focus on whether he, and others, consciously deceived their investors. What it won’t answer is why those investors were so easy to fool.
“It’s natural to ask the question, how could Sam and Caroline and the others have deceived so many people, including people who are closest to them?” Baradwaj says. “I mean, think about the investors that invested in FTX, with access to all the documents they could ever want about the company’s financials, and they still poured hundreds of millions of dollars into this enterprise. I think that tells you something about the reality distortion field that a lot of these figures can have around them.”
Silicon Valley could be said to be in the business of reality distortion. Fundraising for startups can be as much about narrative as about economic fundamentals. Most venture capital portfolios are filled with companies that will fail because their model is wrong, their product won’t land, their vision of the future won’t pan out. The high dropout rate means that everyone is in search of the one thing that will reach escape velocity. Everyone is looking for an epochal success—a Steve Jobs, a Jeff Bezos. That creates a degree of hunger—even desperation—that can be exploited by someone who arrives with a great story at the right moment.
The rise of Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes in the late 2000s and early 2010s coincided with a moment when the gloss had worn off the most recent generation of Big Tech companies; when people were questioning the social value of social networks; when tech founders were dull, male, and promising to do little but enrich themselves. Holmes’ medical device business was going to revolutionize blood testing, changing the economics of medicine. Despite the company’s $10 billion valuation, its devices didn’t work as advertised. Last year, Holmes was convicted on four counts of defrauding investors.
“I think Sam Bankman-Fried was that kind of figure in crypto, which was seen as … all kind of sleazy and weird,” says Margaret O’Mara, professor of American history at the University of Washington and a historian of Silicon Valley. “But here’s this guy who seems incredibly smart. His parents are Stanford law professors. And, you know, he came with this credit that he’s such a geek, he can’t be up to no good.”
Bankman-Fried’s image—playing video games on investor calls, awkwardly talking to hyperactive YouTubers, dressing in slacker-chic without the chic—helped build the sense that he was an archetypal tech genius. “His wearing cargo shorts on stage with Tony Blair and Bill Clinton, the kind of really performative sloppiness that he had was, I think, part of the story. It was irresistible to everyone who was watching it,” O’Mara says.
On top of that, there’s just a huge amount of money—an absurd amount of money—in Silicon Valley, which accumulates around the gravity of perceived success. In 2021, $630 billion was pumped into venture-backed companies. That translated into vast funding rounds for companies that weren’t necessarily frauds but weren’t able to back up their vision with profits. O’Mara points to WeWork, which was nominally valued at $47 billion in January 2019 after outsized investments from VCs, including notorious mega-investor Softbank, before flopping on the public markets. This August, the company admitted it had doubts as to whether it could survive as a business. Hype cycles helped drive the flywheel—for FTX, it was in part riding a wave of FOMO among investors who wanted to get exposure to crypto but would only do so in a way that felt comfortable, through a scale player with pedigree backers. Either consciously or serendipitously, FTX and Bankman-Fried were accumulating that legitimacy.
FTX was the future of crypto, and crypto was the future of money. It was also spinning off cash, hosting prominent effective altruist thinkers, sponsoring college scholarships, and promising to fund charitable projects. That’s the kind of thing that former heads of government with philanthropic foundations like to be close to. The company was a major political donor—and lobbyist—which brought politicians closer to it and meant that Bankman-Fried was able to share stages with power players, further cementing the company’s sense of permanence and significance.
There is a pattern in major financial deceptions, according to Yaniv Hanoch, professor of decision science at the University of Southampton in the UK, who studies frauds. “What happens is that they manage to get over some sort of threshold. And then they’re able to recruit a few big names.” It seems likely, Hanoch says, that some of the big institutional investors that invested in FTX didn’t necessarily understand the crypto markets but crowded in because they assumed that others had done the due diligence. Among FTX’s investors were Temasek, the investment vehicle of the notoriously conservative Singaporean government, and the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. “You see that pension funds get involved … because they think ‘OK, all this is kosher.’ There’s no reason for them to believe that it’s not kosher.’”
But it would be a mistake to assume that investing alongside big, professional VCs is a good firebreak against being scammed. Hanoch’s research has shown that experienced investors are prone to hubris: very confident in their ability and sure that fraud will not happen to them. “‘I’ve been investing for a long time. Nobody can fool me. I’ve been around the world several times,’” Hanoch says. “But that’s precisely where their Achilles’ heel might be—their overconfidence in their ability to read the map accurately.”
It also helps that the crypto industry is opaque and complex, with little regulation and a somewhat questionable approach to bookkeeping.
John Ray III, the restructuring expert who is handling FTX’s bankruptcy proceedings as CEO of the stricken exchange, told a House committee in December that he took over a company with “no recordkeeping whatsoever.” Ray, who oversaw the bankruptcy of the collapsed energy trading company Enron—previously a shorthand for financial crime and collapse—told the committee that “Never in my career have I seen such a complete failure of corporate controls and such a complete absence of trustworthy financial information as occurred here.” FTX, valued at $18 billion in 2021, used the small-business accounting software QuickBooks for its accounts.
The fundamentals of FTX and Alameda’s demise—and the core of the alleged fraud—are on one level complex, on another incredibly straightforward. FTX issued its own crypto token, FTT, which it sold to investors to raise money without giving up equity in the company. Around 90 percent of all FTT tokens were owned by FTX and Alameda. The token’s value was set by the market value of the 10 percent that were traded on the open market. In November 2022, the crypto news website CoinDesk reported that a substantial proportion of Alameda’s balance sheet was made up of FTT tokens, giving lie to the idea that the two companies were operating independently of one another. But that wasn’t the fraud.
The CoinDesk report revealed that a slide in the value of FTT could quickly wipe out Alameda. One of the largest external holders of FTT was one of FTX’s commercial rivals, Binance, which had previously invested in the exchange. Binance announced that it would sell off its FTT, causing the price to crash. That spooked customers of FTX, who worried about the safety of their deposits. Many rushed to pull their money off the exchange. That shouldn’t have been a total disaster—FTX should have had enough cash in reserve to cover withdrawals. But it didn’t. That was because, the DOJ alleges, the exchange had lent customers’ money to Alameda so that it could bet on crypto markets. As crypto tanked in 2022, those bets had left big holes to fill. That, the DOJ says, is fraud.
For staunch crypto skeptics, the manner of the collapse is a demonstration that the entire industry has the appearance of a multilevel marketing scheme, even a fraud—a huge, bold narrative about the future of finance, technically complex, with a promise of an unlimited upside and a heavy dose of FOMO. “This sort of neomania combined with the technobabble is very difficult for the average layperson to dissect … and so they’re willing to kind of suspend disbelief,” says Stephen Diehl, a prominent crypto critic. “In an age where there’s a distrust of expertise and institutions, people are really desperate for something new, anything new, that could promise them a better future or immeasurable wealth. That’s what Sam tapped into … Everybody kind of liked the story of the boy genius. It was a compelling one. It’s sort of a bleak indictment of our obsession with youth and neomania, but that’s sort of the story of now.”
As the Bankman-Fried empire slid toward the void, Alameda staff gathered in the office in Hong Kong. “We had this all-hands meeting where we all sat down and Caroline essentially confessed to us about what they’ve been doing,” Baradwaj says. “As soon as they realized that she was talking about stuff that was probably illegal and certainly extremely immoral, the atmosphere changed immediately from kind of a friendly one to being very, very tense. After that meeting, none of us really spoke to Caroline ever again. We all just packed our things and left and went back to our home countries.” Ellison would later plead guilty to seven criminal charges, including wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering.
Baradwaj says Bankman-Fried, who was in the Bahamas at the time, never gave an equivalent mea culpa to his staff. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to 13 charges of fraud and conspiracy. He will face trial for seven of them this week. “It’s really unfortunate, because a lot of [ex-FTX staff] still think that Sam might be unfairly tarnished by the media,” Baradwaj says. “A lot of them are still in this limbo, where they’re not sure whether to believe him and all the bullshit that he’s been spreading.”
Baradwaj says he’s not clear what was deception, what was hubris, what was a bad idea that got out of hand, and what was a genuine desire to build a massive financial empire to give back to humanity, regardless of the risk.
“It would be so easy if these people were just these cartoon villains who used the image of altruism to gain a lot of money and influence. But the reality, I think, is that they were normal people, and they did probably want to do good in the world,” he says. “Unfortunately, they made these incredibly risky decisions. And decisions that honestly, they knew were bad because they didn’t tell anybody about them. And those decisions were terrible. It cost a lot of money, and it ruined the lives of many people. I think that’s the reality.”
Bankman-Fried’s first trial is scheduled to run for the next six weeks. A second trial is due in March 2024. It’s unlikely to be the last trial of its kind. There is a grim predictability in the tech industry falling for another Theranos, or another FTX, as a new hype cycle spins up, as billions of dollars flood into premarket AI startups, with politicians crowding round the industry’s leading lights. There’s some evidence, according to Hanoch, that being a victim of fraud doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll spot the next one. Hubris can be persistent, and it’s a powerful force in making the next bad decision. In Israel, he says, there’s a saying: “Suckers don’t die. They change.”
This is a conspiracy with multiple theories. The biggest group thinks it's actually ghosts. They aren't a majority, but the people who don't think it's ghosts are split on what they believe is happening.
Among the non-believers the two biggest theories are:
1. Some sort of accident turned various members of the population into metas with ghost-like abilities. The "haunting" is a gimmick to draw in tourists.
2. Insurance fraud. Amity Park has asked for large amounts of money and support from federal and state governments for both rebuilding infrastructure and "anti-ghost measures." If there are no ghosts much of that money would go straight into the pockets of city officials.
The first is mostly harmless but still something the Justice League would have to keep an eye on. The second possibility would mean serious investigation. But either way there has to be metas involved somehow, whether their power is illusory or has actual physical effects. If it's not metas then how are they doing it? Advanced technology? There are multiple scientists and tech companies in the area; notably, Dalv Co moved in near the beginning the "haunting" reports.
Plus, there are stories of robberies, break ins, and assaults. Some of the anecdotes that Amity Parkers don't seem to think anything of sound a lot like terrorism.
The whole thing is relatively niche. Most government officials assume the fraud and so Amity Park is being denied most of the funds they ask for. This is dealt with mostly at the level of petty bureaucracy. Anyone who might take a more serious look at the situation is paying more attention closer to home and doesn't have time to listen to stories about a small town whose weirdness doesn't reach far beyond their borders.
Question has been in Amity Park for a week and he can tell that there IS something going on, the citizens are used to it, and he has no idea how he'd even tell if someone is a ghost.
The "government agents" from a paramilitary branch he's never heard of are very suspicious though.
The Question is struggling with this most recent conspiracy that he is attempting to crack; The Ghosts of Amity Park.
July 25 (UPI) -- Myanmar executed four anti-coup activists, including a former lawmaker, its military junta announced Monday, sparking widespread condemnation over the country's first use of the death penalty in decades.
Well-known democracy activist Kyaw Min Yu, known as "Ko Jimmy," and lawmaker Phyo Zeya Thaw of Aung San Suu Kyi's ousted National League for Democracy party were among those killed under charges of "brutal and inhumane terror acts," the government's information ministry said.
The four defendants were executed "according to prison procedures," the ministry said. No further information was provided on how or when the killings occurred.
"I am outraged and devastated at the news of the junta's execution of Myanmar patriots and champions of human rights and democracy," Tom Andrews, the United Nations' human rights envoy for Myanmar, said in a statement.
"These individuals were tried, convicted and sentenced by a military tribunal without the right of appeal and reportedly without legal counsel, in violation of human rights law," Andrews said. "These depraved acts must be a turning point for the international community."
Ko Jimmy, 52, and Phyo Zeya Thaw, a 41-year-old lawmaker who was also a trailblazing hip-hop artist in Myanmar, were sentenced to death in closed-door trials in January. The other two men executed, Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw, were convicted in April 2021 for allegedly killing a military informant.
"The Myanmar junta's execution of four men was an act of utter cruelty," Elaine Pearson, acting Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. "This horrific news was compounded by the junta's failure to notify the men's families, who learned about the executions through the junta's media reports."
According to the United Nations, the executions were the first in Myanmar since 1988. At least 114 people have been sentenced to death under the military junta, which overthrew the elected civilian government of the Aung San Suu Kyi-led NLD on unsubstantiated charges of voter fraud in February 2021.
Civil disobedience and nationwide protests sprung up immediately after the coup, which the junta brutally suppressed and have since hardened into an internal conflict that some describe as a full-fledged civil war.
Rights groups accused the military of using the executions to attempt to demoralize the anti-coup movement.
"It is clear that these executions are made to strike fear among representatives of the democratic forces and political activists who oppose the junta," Tom Villarin, a former Philippine lawmaker and board member of ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, said in a statement.
"Many political prisoners are subjected to torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and now there are dozens of prisoners in Myanmar jails who could be executed at any moment," he said.
According to the Thailand-based Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, the junta has arrested nearly 15,000 civilians and killed 2,114.
A March report by the U.N.'s human rights body found that the military's abuses in Myanmar may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Fun Facts about Xiao Yuliang (Ultimate Note & Tomb of the Sea Zhang Qiling’s actor)
“Why? Because I missed him, okay!”
All these information here are mostly from his interviews, some are from his tik tok videos.
Anyways, shall we begin?
(⬆️And yup, that’s the same person)
He has a twin older brother, not an identical twin tho.
He always complains about how he used to be able to win against his brother in fights, but now his brother got buff he can’t beat him anymore (LOL
He likes watching anime, so basically a weeb :D (he said his favorite character from Jujutsu Kaisen is Mahito because the villains get to be themselves.)
He watched Naruto, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Mob Psycho 100, One Punch Man, etc.
He also cosplayed as Gojo Satoru on his birthday⬇️
He has a masters degree in dance. He mentioned he knows traditional Chinese dance, urban, contemporary, hip hop, etc.
He learned martial arts from his dad.
His family owns a puppy named Mi Nuo, which was named after the character he played in Anti-Fraud League, Mi Ruo.
The reason why he started dance in the first place was because when he was 12, he and his brother were looking for extracurricular classes, and they both wanted to play ping pong.
So they decided that whoever is able to receive the most ping pong balls gets to stay.
Yuliang lost against his brother so he ended up in a dance class. (LOL that’s tragic)
He used to be in a boy group (Zero-G) that had 30+ people in it. (HOLY SHT that’s a lot of people)⬇️
(That’s all I have for now, maybe there will be a part two...)
Myanmar braced for a major crackdown on Sunday night as more troops were deployed to the cities and armored vehicles patrolled the streets of Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyitaw. When internet access shut down at around 1 a.m., reporters prepared their gear and cameras and prepared to face the inevitable. A friend sent a message: “Delete any sensitive information on your phone!” A colleague called me, whispering into the phone, “Lights are out.”
By 4 a.m., no news of a major crackdown had been reported, though there were some arrests, including five journalists and two local residents in Myitkyina, the capital of northern Kachin State. They were released on Monday. In the morning, the Civil Disobedience Movement poured back onto the streets of Yangon and Mandalay, as well as the national capital Naypyitaw—the “Abode of Kings”, once thought to be protest-proof but now filled with peaceful protesters and security forces.
For those of us who lived through past uprisings, it is hard not to see the fate of the nationwide Civil Disobedience Movement as preordained. We cannot help but replay the past in our minds, and relive the peaceful gatherings and uprisings that faced the military’s wrath and ended in slaughter.
We can see that the military is losing patience, but unleashing bloodshed in front of livestreaming smartphone cameras will be difficult. Since the coup two weeks ago we have seen several livestreams on social media in which citizens fought back against unlawful arrest and attacks by security forces. As in the past, if the military does launch a major assault it will be like digging their own graves.
However, it is frightening even to imagine how this latest confrontation will end. It feels like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
In November, just before the peaceful election in Myanmar, a colleague of mine sent me a message speculating on what the immediate future held for our country. The message predicted post-election violence and envisioned a scenario in which the military would intervene by staging a coup. At the time I dismissed his assessment—but deep inside, I knew there were ominous signs.
Later, after learning of the failure of last-ditch negotiations between the government and the military over the latter’s claims of electoral fraud, I knew we were traveling back into a dark tunnel. On Jan. 29, upon hearing that the two sides had been unable to reach a breakthrough, my colleague texted me simply: “Game Over”.
Indeed, much of the scenario laid out in the message in November—that within six months, the country would see violence, political polarization and the military’s eventual intervention—has come to pass, though the power grab came quicker than expected.
My colleague correctly predicted that the military would stage a coup, citing as justification its claim of voter fraud and an election that was neither free nor fair. Once in power, under this scenario, the military would announce that it intended to focus on key issues including ethnic conflicts, international pressure and economic stability. It also envisions that the military will amend the 2008 Constitution and hold elections, but without the NLD, resulting in a situation much like 2010, when the outlawed NLD refused to take part in the election. The message also speculated that former President U Thein Sein might be offered a seat in the interim government. That particular detail has not panned out—Senior General Min Aung Hlaing leads the SAC.
In retrospect, two high-level visits to Naypyitaw in the weeks before the coup by foreign dignitaries—one by the Russian defense minister (highly unusual) and the other by the Chinese foreign minister—now take on a whole new significance. If they didn’t have knowledge of the coup in advance, I would be very surprised. The military discussed the plan with some close allies at home and abroad. The generals have learned from neighboring countries, and from those further afield, and prepared thoroughly before staging the coup.
On Jan. 29, some senior military leaders in Naypyitaw reached out to ethnic armed forces and told them that, should any unprecedented incident take place in the country, the military wanted to continue working with them to achieve peace. In other words—a coup was on the way.
In 2018, at a café in downtown Yangon, I sat down with a high-ranking official who served in the U Thein Sein government. He warned me to keep in mind the events of 1958.
In that year, under General Ne Win, the military took power from Prime Minister U Nu’s government to restore order amid civil disturbances caused by factions among leaders of the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League. Under a “caretaker government”, Gen. Ne Win held an election in 1960. He handed power back to the winner, U Nu, only to stage a coup and seize it back two years later. Gen. Ne Win claimed to have saved Burma from the abyss and then ruled the country for the next 26 years. Our country became one of the poorest in the world as a result. Gen. Ne Win then endorsed his subordinates to seize power again in 1988 during the nationwide uprising. The “new generation” men in uniform ruled the country until 2010, when they held a sham election. The military-installed government opened up the country, and the West and the international community hailed the reforms and embraced the generals. I am afraid we will see a similar version of these events replayed in the near future. There are hostages in custody, and the military will say: “It’s time to negotiate. What is your price?”
The historical analogy has its limitations, however. Gen. Ne Win ruled in a very different era: He did not have to deal with the creative protest methods of Generation Z, nor were there smartphones, livestreaming, street performances and a horde of celebrities and affluent middle class protesters smiling and exuding a strange calm on the streets. Gen. Ne Win faced a different kind of protest and dealt with it in his own way, dynamiting the Student Union building at Rangoon University in July 1962 and killing many students. (None of which prevented him from receiving an invitation to the US, where he met President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966.)
A week after this month’s coup, the Biden administration condemned the takeover and imposed targeted sanctions. The West and the UN joined the condemnation and backed the protest, the CDM and the ousted elected government. Within days of the coup, protests were mounted in front of the Chinese and Russian embassies in Yangon. To someone who experienced the 1988 uprising as a student protester, it was impressive; it would have taken us ages to mobilize such a movement and international reaction.
The military’s first mistake has been to underestimate the speed with which a mass movement would mobilize; it gave no consideration to the special strengths of Generation Z. Second, it thought the battle would be strictly between the military and NLD. But Myanmar’s youth emerged rapidly and have broken out from Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s shadow to take charge of the resistance to the coup makers. These are everyday people—our neighbors. They say with calmness: “If we keep quiet now, gradually, we will become slaves to the military.”
The military has declared war against the people and the nation, and is trying to turn back the clock. To my colleagues who argue about whether this is a “soft coup” or the harder, cruder variety: There is no such distinction to be made; a coup is a coup. The one that took place in Myanmar two weeks ago has one aim: to take all of us back to the stone age.
