Upper Peninsula Pho . For those a farther trek from San Jose’s Little Saigon, I’ve long considered San Mateo’s Pho Elements the best option . They specialize in Northern style pho and have a variety of crowd pleasing appetizers including Vietnamese style carpaccio and cheesy butter clams . They’re best known for the chicken pho as well as their Hainan style chicken rice, but we found the Northern style beef pho to be better than other nearby options . Back to the Bay Area 🏡 . After any trip, one of my first meals back in the SF Bay Area is a warm bowl of pho . I go most often to Pho Ha Noi (San Jose or Cupertino), but this time I found myself at Pho Kim Long, one of my top 3 pho restaurants but one whose signature is their pho ga or chicken pho . They’ll always ask you what cut of chicken you prefer (white or dark meat, skin or no skin, giblets or no giblets) and just like you never order beef well-done, the order here is dark meat, skin, all giblets included . Sunday Eats . It’s been awhile since I traveled to this part of San Jose and many shops were closed for the Lunar New Year . Our first choice was Lau Hai San and they’re closed until Wednesday, February 7 . I was also sad to see Thanh Huong on Senter Road permanently shuttered closed as it was always a favorite and always seemed busy . We ended up at a new restaurant that had replaced Com Tam and touted their Hu Tieu Nam Vang . Dining 101 teacher 👨‍🏫 . Some items are just better enjoyed with in-person dining and my shortlist include soup XLB dumplings, pho, and now paella 🥘 . Telefèric Barcelona is still one of the best additions to the Palo Alto dining scene and they now have a huge outdoor dining space . I asked for the farthest dining spot away from the crowds and I felt like I walked a block 😆 . Each dish is a new take on the famous Nagoya dish, Hitsumabushi, except instead of grilled eel, various other ingredients are featured . The recommended eating method is the same though and consists of four parts .
