4 6 and 10 for the book asks? :D
4. Most anticipated book release of the second half of the year
The only new book release I can think of is that Rachel Kovaciny has a book coming out that's a retelling of "The Ugly Duckling" set in a Spanish-California-inspired fantasy realm. And that does sound like a cool concept.
6. Biggest surprise
So I started watching the Vanity Fair miniseries, and I thought it was a uniquely modern creative choice for them to have meta-scenes of the narrator talking to the audience, so I was surpised to find that all of that was directly from the book. In general, I was shocked by the rollicking Wodehouse-turned-up-to-a-thousand tone of the book--everything I'd heard about it made me expect a depressing slog. And then I was surprised by how much I cared about the characters, given how unrelenting the author was in criticizing them.
10. A book that made you happy
Born of Gilded Mountains by Amanda Dykes has this lovely atmosphere of a heightened fairy tale world, where everything that happens is technically possible, but can only happen this way in this story world. It did go too far--not everyone speaks in inspirational metaphors all the time, Amanda, and that treasure hunt was absurdly overcomplicated so by the end I was frustrated with the lost potential of the story--but in general, that atmosphere fit very well with the elements of Old Hollywood that made up parts of the plot, and it was a lovely reading experience.

#We've had our yearly secret santa gifts exchange at my dorm and I've been gifted the first volume of Beast 😭😭😭😭😭#I'm crying forever. This december marks three years since I've watched the first b/sd episode#and yet this is the first time I actually own a b/sd manga volume. Like I own it and I can read it whenever I want!!! How cool is that!!!!!#Like there's so many Akutagawa images in it!!!! It's insane!!!!!!!! AND IT'S BEAST AT THAT#I'm deeply moved because I never spoke about it to virtually anyone here (at my dorm)?#Like I suppose a bunch of people vaguely know I like anime but only a couple of close friends know I like. Like-like reading manga lol.#And the person who gifted it DEFINITELY didn't know I like anime in general much less b/sd specifically much less Beast in particular!!!!!#I'm 100% sure (they just arrived this year and we hadn't even had that much occasions to talk to each other).#Which means they went through the trouble of gathering intel from my close friends about what I like and actually follow through‚#seek for the specific manga in a comic store etc... It's such a nice gesture I'm so heartwarmed.#And of course I'm glad for every gift I've received in the last years (genuinely)‚ but the fact that this was the most *specific* to what–#I like. It makes it so special! They were so kind.#There must be one (1) person in this whole 60 people dorm who knows I like Beast–#(that would be the girl who introduced b/sd to me in the first place) and the fact that they asked them for it...#I feel both very grateful and lucky lol#When I unwrapped it!!! Like I thought it was just a random book which would have been nice but like!!!!!#When I actually saw through the thin paper the cover!!!! The scream I screamed in my head#Anyways!!!! I own a b/sd manga now!!!!! I've only got time to go through the first chapter so far but it's suchhhh an experience.#It's like reading it for the first time again 😭😭😭 Half because the translation is so much different than the English one lol.#And I basically know the English version by heart. Half because I never saw this kind of high quality!!!!! It's!!!!! Insane!!!!! Like!!!!!!#I'm crying 😭😭😭 The drawings are so sharp and crisp (in the good way). The lines are so clean there's no disturbance at all#I literally never saw anything so good in my life I'm crying a little. I'm so so glad they blessed me with Beast specifically#The takebon edition is pretty cheap (it's just planet manga so there's no color illustrations or dust cover or anything unfortunatelly.#But to make up for it the volumes are significantly cheaper then let's say J-Pop)#There's also some unique typesetting choices? The text from the book-like boxes is in lowercase which is interesting!#Initially I thought I wouldn't have liked the translation (opening it randomly there was Akutagawa saying “crepa!” (“die!”) to Dazai in ch1#Which was kinda jarring since it's very low register and everyone knows Akutagawa has very complex speech patterns.)#But actually reading it I'm really enjoying the translation so far!!!!#There's so many choices that made me grasp details I actually missed all the times I've read the English translation.#That is to say! Very excited to read it!!!! Will probably make a review / translation commentary if I can find the time!!!!!

Hiya lyres! What books do you have on your tbr this year?
hi anon! as always, i have left christmas with a big stack of Assigned Reading Material From My Best Friend, And Others. this is the physical tbr pile:
a few other books i either received or am looking forward to this year:
the hurting kind, ada limón (this was a gift! i've nearly finished it, it's been my early morning read.)
minor detail, adania shibli (another gift from a friend - this was on my list last year but i couldn't get my hands on it. happy to get to it now)
when the angels left the old country, sacha lamb (this was also a gift but i am SO excited for this. i love fantasy takes on angels and i've heard nothing but good things about this)
the tomb of dragons, katherine addison (this will be released in march and i am on the edge of my seat for it. give me back my favourite bedraggled little elf detective. i need to see him struggle to accept love in even more increasingly dire situations)
#out of the books in the picture i've made the most headway on the green knight#it's a weird one. love the narrative voice; vaguely concerned by the lack of plot so far; deeply intrigued by the characters#i've also started wrong norma and lolly willowes!#lolly willowes is charming and wrong norma is. idk what wrong norma is. it's interesting?#i read todnauberg from it this morning bc i've been to todtnau a bunch these past few years (it's nearby + makes for a good sunday hike)#and maybe i'm just cynical or not a good enough reader of poetry but i do wonder what carson does with celan besides point at him#like this has been on my mind so much. when is a reference productive and when is it a namedrop that kind of#artificially elevates whatever text it's in. why can't i find substance to this. is it me. it probably is#nvm this anon i hope you found some good picks in the rest of this answer :D#asks#anon#local lyres book club

So Raph had already decided to do the stupid thing when Leo was in his coma, right? He was just waiting for Leo to wake up and be okay again. And you implied that Leo almost died. Would Raph have still done his stupid thing if Leo had just...never woken up? Or was paralyzed or something? What was his plan then?
That's a good question! I'm not entirely sure, honestly. Really, he didn't have any other plan besides "we ball" and hope it worked out. He knew he wouldn't be able to predict Draxum's actions or his family's reactions so he just did not consider anything lol. Boy had no contingencies, he was just doing his best.
I'd say there was never really a point where Raph considered staying or questioned what would make him stay. His mind was already made up: he was going to go protect his brother or die trying. And Leo never really factored into that because Raph really was not entertaining the possibility that Leo might not survive. I know that kind of conflicts with what he was talking about in the movie, I know that Raph always has their mortality and the fear for his little brothers in the back of his mind, but with everything that's happened in the past year and a half losing another brother is not something he can handle right now. A block just goes up and he can't even question whether Leo will make it or not. He's Leo. He'll be fine. He has to be, because if he isn't then where the hell does that leave them?
I think he probably would have left anyway. He might be in denial, might think that if he was with Draxum he could just pull a Schrodinger's turtle and tell himself that Leo was totally fine back home. After all, if he never sees his family again then there's really no harm in lying to himself. His brother is safe, and his dad and other brothers are fine. Because they have to be. Why would he be doing this if his family wasn't any safer for it?

3, 4, and 12 for the book asks <3
hiiii, thanks 🖤
3. What were your top five books of the year?
answered here :)
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
yes!! robin wall kimmerer became one of my few auto-purchase authors this year. other authors that are not auto-buy but i'm still very interested in reading from include: katherine arden, heather fawcett, m.l. rio, tamsyn muir, alix e. harrow, and nghi vo
12. Any books that disappointed you?
unfortunately i'm more often disappointed by books than satisfied with them, so i won't list all the disappointments here, but the most unexpected one was a memory called empire by arkady martine. a book reviewer i generally trust recommended it, so i went in with higher expectations, and while it definitely wasn't bad, it kind of felt like one long prologue to me? i'm interested in finishing the duology just to see where it goes, and there are some really unique ideas in it, but i just didn't enjoy it as much as i'd hoped to
i also read uncultured by daniella mestyanek young, and while it feels sensitive to critique an autobiography of someone's very real, traumatic life story, it read like two separate books to me. the first half is about her upbringing in the children of god cult, while the second half is about her time in the military; she studies high-control groups and clearly tried to make that the through-line of the book, but it just didn't quite work for me—i think because the messaging got muddled (her answer to the cult that raised her is total institutional dismantlement and punishment for those who caused harm, but then she still seemed to feel a lot of loyalty to the military, despite identifying clear parallels between it and her upbringing? idk, i was left a little puzzled)
see the original post here
#manti you should do this tag i want to be nosy about your reads#re: 'new authors' i feel so far behind in some ways#like i've been 'discovering' authors that everyone already loves lol#but i read like one to two books a week for four years of undergrad#and then took a fat reading hiatus after graduating#so i basically missed like... 6 years of books? and book discourse#and have only gotten back into it in the last 2ish yrs#ask tag#idontwantrobyntodie

Graduation exam tomorrow, guys if I survive this I'll be the most carefree person on earth for the next 2 years
#2 years bc that's when I'll hopefully have my master's graduation#but if I manage to do the interpretation specialisation then that one will only have an interpretation exam#nothing to study#starting from tomorrow I will binge read everything on my tbr list that I couldn't because of the constant lit classes#in fist year I made the foolish mistake of going for Russian specialisation instead of having a minor in another language/culture#which means I had like three times as many lit classes as everyone else#so I really didn't have like any time at all to read for fun#oh btw! I'm looking for YA fantasy books in Russian#by Russian authors#(for my sneaky little long term plans of doing and publishing literature translation)#so if any of y'all have anything to recommend please do!!! my asks and dms are always open#or you can just comment#so far I've picked out руки полные пепла by this author who just publishes under the name мэй#gonna order next week probably#ramblings

Was doing so good holding it together today but now that I’m laying down and trying to sleep I’m tearing up and I can feel that I’m about to burst into tears any second now
#my mom called me like ten minutes before I was off work today#and asked if I had talked to my grandpa lately and I was like yeah some why?#I’ve been showing what I’ve been cooking with him and my grandma because I was proud of myself#and she was like oh so you know about his potential surgery?#and I was like. his what???????#apparently his pace maker is dying and malfunctioning and he needs a new one#but this is the third time it’s had to be replaced and as he’s gotten older he’s had a lot more health issues#and they’re not even sure his heart can handle getting it replaced…. he has an appointment tomorrow to find that out#and no one told me. no one fucking told me it was that bad and I’m so#like man my feelings on my grandparents are so insanely complicated but I do love them#I love them so much and they practically raised me and loved me more and treated me better than my mother EVER did#they’re the only family members I’ve ever been legitimately terrified and upset over not accepting me cuz I’m queer#like my mom and siblings? I could not give a flying fuck if they hated me for my gender or sexuality#if my grandparents had a bad reaction I think I would fucking kill myself#and idk the point is I love him and I’ve barely seen him at all the past few years because we live far away now and I never visit because I#hate the rest of my family#but what if he can’t have this surgery?????#or what if he can but something goes wrong??????#what if he’s dying and I’m only able to go down and see him one more time#and he could be fine. it might all work out and he could be fine#but man I’m terrified that won’t happen because WHY WOULD NO ONE TELL ME ANY OF THIS#and yeah no I’m fully crying now I can’t do this#he taught me to draw and he built the house I grew up in and he got me into lord of the rings and would take me book shopping#and and and I’m gonna fucking throw up#kaz rambles

do you have a goodreads and/or storygraph profile? would love to see more of your favorite books ❤️
Oh this is such a sweet message! While I have a Goodreads, I don't update it that often. I have a lot of IRL friends on there, which makes me slightly reluctant to post about the silly romance/smut books I've been reading. But I also use my real name on there.
So I just got a Storygraph! (and was pleased to see you can import goodreads data) But to be honest, I don't read nearly as much as I should, as someone who both calls herself a writer and believes that the writers need to read in order to be good at writing.
To be fair, until fairly recently I was a lawyer who was working a lot and experiencing a significant amount of burnout. I read mostly quick/lighthearted reads this year to get back into the groove.
In terms of my favourites and recommendations: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami is my favourite book of all time. I also loved Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, The Hellbound Heart/Imajica/Books of Blood by Clive Barker (basically anything he writes though), House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski, and Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. Among many others, I'm not that hard to please tbh.
#and tbf my data by no means reflects everything I've read in the last 5 years but I'd say the last 2 or so are mostly accurate#asks#book recs#I am LOVING Kushiel's Dart so far#and listen i know a lot of people have mixed feelings about Wind-Up Bird and Murakami but I love it so.

For the end of the year book ask 👀✨️
1,4,25
Hello, Fae! Thanks for indulging me :3
Ask Game
1. How many books did you read this year?
62 so far! I have 7 more I'm loosely aiming to read before the end of the year, so I can claim my ornament for completing a reading challenge but uuuuhhhh... it's not going great XD
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Mostly read already familiar authors or authors that I'm kinda neutral on. BUT I would absolutely read another Alix E Harrow book because Starling House was phenomenal, and the second book of Kara Jorgensen's The Reanimator Mysteries series is on my TBR as well
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
My book goal for next year'll probably be around 75 books, which is about 10% more than this year. And I'm attempting to restrain myself from adding a bunch of timed Storygraph reading challenges on top of that (I have 4 so far...)
#raven answers#steamworksfairy#end of the year book ask game#i literally read the other half the october daye series this year so its very much seanan mcguire and assorted others this year lol#we're also not talking about the number of non-timed storygraph reading challenges i have acquired#because that number is far bigger than 4

y'all I knew my fellow student was a t**** supporter but like. she's a SUPPORTER supporter
#she fell off the cadillac and hit her head#and the third student is a nurse so she was asking her all the usual questions#and she went 'who's the president'#and this bitch goes 'trump elect. but. biden right now.'#like girl you just hit your head why is it still so far up his ass that that's your answer#anyway the student who hit her head and the student who's a nurse and our instructor all went to the ER#so I'm here just waiting for them to come back#btw this is the same student who told me that it must be nice to have a brain that remembers things#cause I keep doing well on our tests and she's not#she's in her 50s I think and she was in a car accident like 40 years ago and that's her entire personality#she barely puts in any effort for studying and then blames it on lingering effects from the accident#and listen I totally understand that not everyone can study in the same way and it's gonna be way harder for some people than others#I also understand that I'm lucky in that I work at this pilates studio so instead of making a trip to the studio to self practice#I can just stay an hour later and practice then#like it does make it easier#but she self practices like once a week for like 30 minutes and then reads over her book and expects to do well on the tests#like girl don't make weird remarks at me about how my brain just magically remembers things#as if I'm not studying my ass off cause I care about this class#also like I really hope she's okay I do but it is a MIRACLE that it took this long for her to fall

bitching abt my job again
tags contain frank mentions of transphobia and homophobia
#this happened like. i dont know. a month ago or something but i still keep playing it in my mind#for those unawares: theres been a fucking community outrage over the pride display at the library i work at#and have been working/volunteering at for 5 years#only it never went up. it never went up. bc the mayor came in as a quote unquote private citizen and demanded it taken down#despite the fact that patrons are required to fill out complaint sheets and even then it isnt ensured a display will be taken down#so obviously its a misuse of power that hes spinning into him being a concerned citizen#and i made a whole post bitching abt it and im doing so again (hi) bc i didnt like how our director responded to it#and yeah. so there was a board meeting after that right. well i set up for them as i usually do and let me tell you. that was the first#--time more than like 6 people came to spectate. it was insane.#and i guarantee that this months meeting wont have half as many people that fucking crammed themselves in there to complain abt gay ppl#bc of course they dont give a shit about the library#they just care about how scary the queers are#and yeah it was a shit show. i learned we have a far right organization in our town#and i was sat right in front of her husband the whole time#(standing actually. i was standing between him and my moms chair and he was sighing and grumbling the whole time bc he couldnt muster the#--balls to ask the 5 foot 2 fag in front of him to please move lol. small victories right)#when i say her i mean the leader of the freaks. idk. chairman? anyway she had a whole speech about how like queers are bad and cutting#the penises off little babies or whatever and she pulled up this passage from a book that was part of the display#its some book by the youtuber rowan ellis-- here and queer i think was the title. it was cataloged in our ya section and contained passages#talking about like having safe sex and what dildoes are and all that kind of shit. just really clinical descriptions imo. im not familiar w#--the youtuber really but im assuming they wrote it as informational bc shocker: teens be having sex. unsafe sex. especially queer teens#sourse: i was one of tgose#and...think for a moment. remember when you were a teen. youd rather fucking DIE than listen to your parents give you the sex talk#and chances are if youre gay your parents arent even going to know WHAT gay sex is (hugging without shirts on) so youre going to look#--elsewhere#bc if youre a hormonal fucking teen youre going to figure it out one way or another! especially if youre from (cough) a podunk shitwater#--town like mine that ran on abstinence by way of sex education#i think teens deserve to have access to that sort of information through trusted means. and i do mean het teens too#but no these fucking morons put on airs like everyones waiting till marriage--no! not my becky sue! as if they werent fucking around in#--holy shit i reached taglimit. i didnt ecen know there was one. hold on

Giant personal vent time
This guy stole somewhere between 3 to 6 MILLION dollars from my grandmother by conning my great aunt into signing over her estate and medical & financial power of attorney to him literally on her death bed
I and my aunt have been working basically a whole second job the last 3 months trying to get together a legal case to go after this guy. And now my grandma wants to drop it. And no one else has standing so what the fuck can we do.
This man has absolutely done this to other ppl before, there is no doubt in my mind. I’ve seen his property records for just what’s publicly available in my county and it’s sketchy as hell. I am never going to get over this but there’s nothing I can do.
Gonna put like a million more thoughts in the tags because I’m losing my fucking mind.
#it’s not like we don’t have the money#the estimated legal fees are like $100k but we’d definitely get it back from the estate in the end#but grandma doesn’t want to look like she’s going after her sister’s money#and she won’t admit she has dementia so I’m not allowed to tell the lawyer that she can’t handle testifying#so he just thinks we’re being wishy washy#and my aunt is so conflict avoidant she won’t tell the lawyer anything that’s happening that he could absolutely be helping with#and my dumbass step cousin is so conflict avoidant he’d literally rather let the family business go bankrupt than actually deal with this#why the fuck did she make him ceo#I know why she trusted this guy but jfc whyyyy did she trust him#god if only I had a time machine I’d go back 6 months and make sure we kicked him out of her house#I really really didn’t think he’d go this far. I just thought he was a weird dude she was being too nice to#but no. actual con artist#the more we learn the worse it gets#and grandma just cannot handle it. even though she has the money!! I’m so mad#I wanna email every reporter I can think of until I find someone willing to publish an article about this guy#so that at least that way someone would see how fucking sketchy he is when they Google him#so that maybe the next person won’t fall for it#is there some kind of legal action you can take that’s basically just like#hey we’re not willing to spend years to prove that you’re evil#but just for the record we need everyone to know you suck and we hate you#like just so ppl know#maybe I should ask our pastor to send out a PSA to all the other little old ladies at church#since that’s how my great aunt met him in the first place#I could get at least 3 good books out of all the drama in my fucking family I think#one for this whole thing. one for my dad’s insane parents. and one for all the bad decisions I made in Seattle

because im less breakable than you
#still dont really remember the details of how this ends but still thinking they couldve made laura vampire instead of carmilla human#also keep thinking - as with all the things recently idk why this is a thing now but i gotta keep thinking abt it - that canonically#carmilla died at 18#laura is 19#actresses are 25ish here? it's not a big difference but it is...a little difference#theyre teenagers#they look like teenagers#she fucking died at her first ball hoping to make her first ever friend it's so sad really#but i was thinking abt this too with the iwtv episode where claudia asks armand to turn madeleine and he goes to question her#like certain lines are just so very specifically written i think and they hit so much harder if you adjust their ages mentally#claudia looks 14. shes from 1903 so shes around 40-45 years old?#madeleine's actress is 30ish i believe and i think madeleine is meant to be a similar age#but she looks kind of young. i guess 30 is pretty young actually#armand in the show was turned at 27? assad zaman is 34? close enough i guess you dont have to adjust that much#but in the book hes turned at 17?#like just some lines really hit#when claudia calls madeleine 'some weird white lady i met by happenstance'#imagine a 14 yo talking abt a 30 yo instead of two people who look similar in age#when madeleine calls armand young man when shes like theres nothing left of my era theres been a war#i think she says like 'young man theres been a war'#that 'young man' really hits if you imagine him 17#idk#also still thinking abt yaz. if she looked 19#idk. teenage vampires man#also been reading the book and forever5yo claudia is fascinating too i love her#also can they do telepathy in the book bc i feel like a lot of times in the book it's that claudia is being carried by louis like a 5yo#that she whispers stuff in his ear. and thats always the kind of stuff that in the show they'd use telepathy for#it's a good solution both ways i lik eboth but it made me wonder did they just add the telepathy in entirely in the show?#bc i dont believe theres been any so far in the book

Hi! I’ve seen you post about shadow and bone and I’m almost finished with the first season of the show and I love it. I was just wondering if you read the books and if you’d recommend them? I do love that I don’t know any of the source material so I can enjoy it for what it is but I’m also curious as to how close the show is to the books so far and how in depth the world building that sometimes gets left out of show adaptions goes
Hello!! ah i'm always very interested to hear from people who are discovering the show without having read the books yet! i feel like you're such a crucial part of the audience :)
I have indeed read the books, i read the six of crows books years before the show but i didn't read the SAB books until just before i watched the show, to 'study up' lol. i would recommend them! they are very firmly a classic YA series so they have typical elements of the genre for better or worse, but if you like YA as i do i imagine you will enjoy them. I think my favourite thing about them was actually the world building, but the story itself was also quite engaging. I won't say how close the adaptation is to the books so you can discover for yourself!
I'm not sure if you're also asking about the six of crows books as well, but i would WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend them. They are.... unfathomably good, i could spend the rest of the day listing why. They're also very different from the SAB books so think they are worth giving a go regardless of how you end up finding the SAB books!
#also when i read sab years after reading soc i was like 'now im not sure i EVER understood all the grisha stuff they talked about in soc'#because this all sounds like brand new information to me 😂#if i may be so bold as to say i prefer the sab content of the show to the sab content of the books#BUT i think i love the soc content from the show and books in equal measure#just for what we've seen so far in the show and how much faith i have in them adapting all the elements of soc#id be super interested to know how you end up finding either series if you do decide to read!!#asks#choreo-mania
