4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

yes!! robin wall kimmerer became one of my few auto-purchase authors this year. other authors that are not auto-buy but i'm still very interested in reading from include: katherine arden, heather fawcett, m.l. rio, tamsyn muir, alix e. harrow, and nghi vo

12. Any books that disappointed you?

unfortunately i'm more often disappointed by books than satisfied with them, so i won't list all the disappointments here, but the most unexpected one was a memory called empire by arkady martine. a book reviewer i generally trust recommended it, so i went in with higher expectations, and while it definitely wasn't bad, it kind of felt like one long prologue to me? i'm interested in finishing the duology just to see where it goes, and there are some really unique ideas in it, but i just didn't enjoy it as much as i'd hoped to

i also read uncultured by daniella mestyanek young, and while it feels sensitive to critique an autobiography of someone's very real, traumatic life story, it read like two separate books to me. the first half is about her upbringing in the children of god cult, while the second half is about her time in the military; she studies high-control groups and clearly tried to make that the through-line of the book, but it just didn't quite work for me—i think because the messaging got muddled (her answer to the cult that raised her is total institutional dismantlement and punishment for those who caused harm, but then she still seemed to feel a lot of loyalty to the military, despite identifying clear parallels between it and her upbringing? idk, i was left a little puzzled)

Kirsta is standing beside me on the deck when I look around, even though I never saw her come up. She leans against the railing, watching our fate approach with an unreadable expression, the wind playing at the fine pieces of hair that don’t stay in her braid. The sun brings out the green in her eyes, not at all the green of the sea but something warm and alive, like new leaves in spring.   I sidestep closer, rest my elbows on the rail beside hers. It’s not as if I’m never going to see her again, but I know somehow that after today it will never be the same between us. And for a terrible moment I am glad for it, I must confess—not that you were stolen from me, but that we were apart so I could have this time, so that I could have them for myself, all to myself. That I have been a me and not an us.  But that’s a secret I’ll try to keep from you.

what are some book characters you personally relate to? and I’m sorry you are sick :( fee better!!

ooo love this! the first to come to mind is sophie hatter from the howl's moving castle books (if I was magically turned into an old lady, I, too, would feel liberated from social mores). I also remember feeling really connected to gansey when I first read the trc books in high school. I'm not a rich kid haha, but the way he related to his friends/his anxiety about being the "glue" that holds his friends together really resonated with me. I have since gone to therapy, though, and learned that's not the most healthy thing lol

and thank you! I'm already feeling a little better today than I was yesterday, so that's promising!

- microbiology slash immunology: hashtag woman in stem. but like the problem with this is that nobody (who's not already into it) wants to listen to me talk about it because i like it in the way that i find everything we learn in class interesting. i have. Very Few fun facts. and to people who have no idea what im talking about its not very interesting to hear me talk about what the expression of CD62L and CD44 markers on T cells means. you know . anyways so CD62L also called L-selectin is[GUNSHOT]

- popular "christian" (mostly american) culture (sorry for stealing this one robin but i do this So Much. like as a horrified outsider): its been years and i still cant wrap my head around megachurches (among other things). WHAT DO YOU MEAN!!!! instagram lovesss going omg you're a christian right. here's the worst take you've ever seen in your life. and i watch it all out of morbid fascination and then i send it to my friends and we hold a socratic seminar about it so you can imagine that instagram. keeps suggesting those things to me

- writing but specifically prose!! and stories!!: this is separate from poetry. i LOVE talking about story structure and how it works and how you write it out and what you include and dont include and the writing style brings to it. its so. tears it apart with my teeth

- this one is niche but symbolism in the books of the law: when i was a kid i had 3 Bible books on rotation and one of them was leviticus. which is kind of ridiculous considering that at that age i had No idea all of that was some type of symbol i just thought it was interesting. but yes Every Single Thing in there is a symbol. from the smallest piece of the tabernacle to a singular step in a sacrifice its kind of crazy!! i adore it!!!!

well. you're at christianity central baby. God (or at least. i'm trying)

wish i had a really cool well adjusted answer like getting out my embroidery or something but the truth is i kinda just lay on the floor

u know. for my 18th my bestie gave me a notebook in which she had drawn and painted various birds (inside joke) and that was one of the best gifts ive ever gotten ever

30. what reminds you of home (doesn’t have to mean house… just things that remind you of the feeling of home)?

AND THE FAMOUS QUESTION!!! the colour blue, arabic hymns, the sound of my dad humming, keyboard clacking, the smell of zaatar, laughing so hard i almost throw up (happens to me A Lot and always while eating), taking the metro (yes even with the horrors), the taste of the bread my grandma makes for communion :]
