My manga collection (October 2023)
I did a post detailing my manga collection back in 2021, but it's grown a lot since then so I figured I'd make a new post! It was also a good time to do so because we're repainting my room and while there's usually a ton of anime merch in front of the books on my shelves, now it's all been packed up. So there's a clear look at the books without me having to move anything, lol.

Complete Monstober II Day 12: Calamity Mary
A magical girl about whom there's nothing magical? Yes, this witch exists. Here's her TV Tropes entry:
Calamity Mary, even before she was chosen to become a magical girl, was an alcoholic named Naoko Yamamoto who abused her daughter in order to make herself feel powerful. Upon receiving her powers, she set about using her abilities to torment others for her own amusement. She forced her way into the Yakuza as a way to help out bad people and had no issue abusing and shooting her fellow magical girls when they didn't act submissive. When the magical girls were forced into a killing game, she embraced the conflict with glee. Eventually she escalated into attacking a highway and shooting dozens of civilians to watch the explosions and lure in her rivals, threatening to keep on killing unless she's stopped.

We got a lot of trivia for Cutie Honey episode 22: “My Beloved Paradise Academy.”
Screenwriter: Masaki Tsuji
Art Director: Iwamitsu Ito
Animation Director: Shinya Takahashi
Director: Kazukiyo Shigeno
The animation director for this episode, Shinya Takahashi, has a history of working on Toei Animation’s early majokko series. He previously did the character designs for Himitsu no Akko-chan, Mahou no Mako-chan, Sarutobi Ecchan, and Mahoutsukai Chappy.
Takahashi would later do animation work for the 1995 PC-FX video game, Cutey Honey FX.
The principal of Paradise Academy is based on the grandfather from Go Nagai’s Kikkai-kun manga, which is also where the characters Alphonne and Pochi originated from. Kikkai-kun’s grandfather also served as the basis for the janitor Kiyohiko Todoroki in the Devilman anime.
The principal was voiced by Isamu Tanonaka, who had filled in for Keiko Yamamoto as Pochi in the previous episode.
Goemon is based on Goemon Abashiri, the oldest son from the Abashiri Family manga. Goemon’s claim to fame is that he’s a “professional pervert.” Go Nagai’s assistant and good friend Ken Ishikawa was the model for Goemon. While he doesn’t appear in the original Cutie Honey manga, one of Honey’s (female) classmates is based on him. Goemon would make cameo appearances in New Cutey Honey, Re: Cutie Honey, and Cutie Honey Universe.
Shunji Yamada (later known as Keaton Yamada) voiced Goemon in this episode only, while Sanji Hase played him for the remainder of the series. Hase was previously the King of Manaco in episode 16 and the occasional nameless Panther subordinate.
Naojiro refers to Goemon as "senkou" (先公), which is a rude way of saying "teacher." I suppose the best English equivalent is referring to an educator as "teach."
The “Yoshitune” that Danbei sings about is probably Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a military commander from the late Heian and early Kamakura periods.
Danbei’s “adorable nephew” Naojiro is another character borrowed from Go Nagai’s Abashiri Family. In that series, Naojiro was the second oldest son of the Abashiri family. His unique feature was being a cyborg.
In the original Cutie Honey manga Naojiro does not appear as Danbei’s nephew but instead as a girl named Naoko. Naoko is the gang leader of St. Chapel Academy, much like how Naojiro is the gang leader of Paradise Academy in the anime. According to producer Toshio Katsuta, he wanted to introduce Naojiro as a good contrast to Honey, unlike Seiji who he said was “silly and weak.”
In this episode only, Naojiro was voiced by Hiroshi Masuoka, who previously voiced Demon General Zannin in Devilman and Hebitsubo in Dororon Enma-kun. For the remainder of the series Naojiro is voiced by an uncredited Shoji Nishizaki, who mostly did voice work in tokusatsu series.
Naojiro would later make a cameo appearance in the second episode of New Cutey Honey.
While Paradise Academy does not appear in the original Cutie Honey manga, it is very much inspired by Go Nagai’s infamous manga, Harenchi Gakuen. Before he was reinventing the concept of magical girls and giant robots, Go Nagai was stirring up controversy with this 1968 series. Harenchi Gakuen or “Shameless Academy” was one of the first manga to be featured in the popular Weekly Shonen Jump. It featured ridiculous Benny Hill-like antics, excessive nudity, lowbrow toilet humor, crucifixion scenes played for laughs and made a mockery of the Japanese school system. There was such outage towards Harenchi Gakuen, PTA groups actually performed public burnings of the manga. Despite the controversies, Harenchi was immensely popular, which led to live action TV series and films.
Paradise Academy’s name comes from the Abashiri Family manga. Originally, Paradise Academy was a prison-like middle school for aspiring young assassins and served as the setting for an early arc in the manga. A few of Naojiro’s classmates seen in this episode are taken directly from the Abashiri Family manga as well.
While attempting to evade Naojiro, Honey transforms into members of the baseball club, wrestling club and boxing club. As a boxer, she is only wearing shorts, shoes and boxing gloves. This is exactly how Kikunosuke dresses when she practices boxing in the Abashiri Family manga.
The self-proclaimed “Magician of Hell” was originally designed by Ken Ishikawa, who had her sporting more obvious magician motifs such as a giant top hat and bow tie. The “Great” in her name likely refers to a magician’s title.
Great Claw controlling Naojiro’s comrades with spider-like threads is possibly a reference to the Devilman manga. There are a couple of chapters involving a spider-like demon who controls the students of Nakado Academy and forces them to attack Akira and Miki. There is also an episode of the Devilman TV series which features a demon who controls human-like mannequins with spider threads.
This is also the only episode to not feature Panther Zora or Sister Jill.
That's all for episode 22!

What Did You Eat Yesterday: 1st Season (2019)
Plot premise: Kinou nani tabeta? Kakei Shiro is a 45-year-old lawyer who works at a small law firm. He is good at cooking and a meticulous and thrifty person who keeps the monthly food budget to 25,000 yen. Shiro’s daily routine is to leave work on time and head to a discount supermarket nearby. His partner Yabuki Kenji is an affable hairdresser in his 40s. The two of them share a two-bedroom apartment and the finer points of two men living together come up at the dining table every day. With Kakei less fearful of those around him finding out about his sexuality, he and Kenji are able to spend the days more happily. However, changes, good and bad, continue to happen as time passes, and the two continue to age.
Network: TV Tokyo Episodes (and episode length): 10 (30 mins) Creator: Adachi Naoko (screenplay), Yoshinaga Fumi (manga) Cast: Nishijima Hidetoshi, Uchino Seiyou, Takaizumi Atsuko, Yamamoto Koji, Isomura Hayato, Makita Sports, Kaji Meiko, Tayama Ryosei IMDB | RottenTomatoes
± So cute. I love the development from episode 1 through to the final episode of the season. Even if they're already an established relationship, it really feels like it develops from "we have to keep up appearances" to just being happy. Also, the food looks amazing~ It's like those recipes where you have to read a whole story first, but this time i do care about the story and not just the recipe.

Anime Elitism Superbowl
Comments/musings on the bracket 11 watched, 5 partially watched. Giving half-points for the partials, that's 42% completion. There are a fair number of those that I don't intend to watch, though. In the bracket, there are 2 Ikuharas, 2 Shafts, 3 Yuasas, 2 Dezakis, 5 Gainax. The only eligible Kon. No Urobuchi, no KyoAni/Yamada, no Tachikawa, no Watanabe (1 Manglobe), no Okada, no Trigger, no ufotable, possibly no Brains Base? Do you even auteur theory bruh 7 from Madhouse! One thing, though, that stood out, was how some of these did have lower-brow appeal. SZS, Monogatari, and most of the Gainax stuff had plenty of otaku stuff and arguably moeshit. The likes of SZS, Monogatari, FLCL, and NHK certainly directly commented on otaku sexuality a lot. I guess there is still a sizeable "I like these shows in the correct elitist way unlike the small-brain plebs" fanbase for all of these. Gankutsuou stands out as like the only fujoshit. Rakugo would qualify on content, but not so much on audience reception. And now kvetching over how this bracket is still basic as all get-out! From my "your elitism is basic" list, only two entries are in this bracket! Only 10 in this bracket appeared in the top 32 eligible entries of 2013 Animetacritic. Only 3 in this bracket aired after 2013. There's no Yamamoto Sayo, Matsumoto Rie, or Ishizuka Atsuko (nor aforementioned Yamada Naoko or Okada Mari), so this bracket CERTIFIED PROBUHLEIMATEEKAY!!!1!11!
#category: anime#category: fandom#I guess mizushima is way too pulp-accessible to make any elitism lists lawl#hatakeyama scraping onto all these lists thanks to rakugo lawl

Puyo Puyo Legends: Echoes of Magic (ぷよぷよレジェンド: エコーズ・オブ・マジック / Puyopuyo rejendo ekōzu Obu majikku) is a puzzle role-playing video game developed by Sonic Team, Camelot Software Planning, and Project Emerald, Inc., and published by Sega in association with D4 Enterprise.
Premise of Story Mode:
The story follows a young mage named Sasha, who stumbles upon a mysterious artifact—a relic of ancient Lunar magic—while exploring a ruined, long-forgotten temple. This relic leads Sasha on a journey to uncover the lost magic that was once used to keep the world in balance.
As Sasha explores these ancient sites, she meets various characters both old and new, and uncovers the mysteries of the multiverse, where magic, power, and fate are intricately tied to the puzzles of the Angeline Temple. The story may involve uncovering the origins of the multiverse's magic, facing down new threats, and gaining allies from numerous timelines to combat a rising dark force.
New Characters:
Sasha (The Relic Seeker) (voiced by Tomoko Kaneda / Megan Shipman): A curious, slightly reckless mage with an innate connection to old magic. Sasha's personality is a mix of enthusiasm and recklessness, but she has a deep desire to learn and protect the balance of magic.
Taro (The Guardian of the Past) (voiced by Chikara Ousaka / Jack DeSena): A stoic and enigmatic character who has watched over ancient magic for centuries. He can transform between a human form and a massive, magical guardian creature. Taro would serve as a mentor, helping Sasha understand the importance of magic while guiding them through the more dangerous paths.
Luna (The Time Weaver) (voiced by Akane Fujikawa / Jill Harris): A mysterious girl with the power to glimpse into alternate timelines. She’s a master at solving complex puzzles and has a profound understanding of the Puyo world’s fate. Luna joins Sasha as an unlikely ally, using her ability to manipulate time to affect the flow of certain puzzles and battles.
Zarra (The Rogue Mage) (voiced by Haruka Yoshimura / Monica Franco): A mischievous mage with a talent for illusion magic. Zara is initially a rival but eventually becomes an ally after realizing the stakes. She brings an unpredictable nature to the group, using her magic to deceive enemies and confuse puzzles.
Any thoughts about this concept?

Legacy of Shinra ~ Origins of the Ink Demon Pt.7 ~
*Back in the 90s..."
[Echo Night Beyond/Nebula BGM : Track 1]
Naoko : Hey, Usagi! Great episode. Good show, listen, the guys from YYH had a minor recreational ceremonial about my predicaments of marrying their author.
Usagi : Oh really, you thinks so? Naoka marrying with Togashi, the guy who made YYH? No way...I mean [forcibly] Yay. Two mangaka authors willingly to marry each other, ha ha ha ha...That's real good. Also, we're running out of ink for any of those crazy ideas.
Naoka : Oh, you're right. I do got ink that were in stored in Toei Animation's Ink storage deparment I just gotta go get it for ya.
Usagi : Nah author. I got this. We all due pay respects to each other. I'll go get the ink for ya. Do you know where the stored ink is?
Naoka : It's right over there.
Usagi : Good. I'll be right back soon as possible. Something tells me that Mr. Goku didn't remember about having a door that leads to the Store Ink closet. But it'll do, just let it slide and watch me do it. Nice and easy. (inhales and exhales) Showtime.
*door opening*
Usagi : Huh? That's odd, I don't remember Toei connected to another studio, wait here in Japan? That is literally weird, but, I might leave this one in the bag. Now then, off to find that stored ink, gotta give this to the author. Now where to find that ink. Got a flashlight.
[Phazon Mines - Kenji Yamamoto]
Usagi : Boy, this place gives the creeps. Sure don't know anything about it. Well, this is where we Begin. (Turns on flashlight) So, this is pretty weird for a workshop connecting to Toei was not the way was, but hey, if can live up my reputation, I trlk this to my friends and to get along with the truth! No haps, no caps, just a simple minded girl that has the power of truth, love and justice. Over and out. (Hears something rattling) Oh, it's just a soda can. This is really starting to bug me. This is not the ink component storage that Toei had since the studio was built years ago. But strange, someone didn't by means any necessary that would give a strange clue about the studio built severals years since the half of the 20th century. Hello? (speaks loudly) HELLO? ("Hello" is echoed) Well, best of luck. No sign of where that stored ink his.
"hours later..."
Usagi : Sigh, there is nothing is weird hall connecting to Toei Animation, where do you people find something that is relatable to cartoon magic. Odd. This is where Toei Animation had all of it's cartoons in the past created since the half of the 20th century. Just to to be sure that--
*Hit*
Usagi : Oof! Jackpot! I found the motherload! Hello supply of Ink! This looks good, but what's all this? I didn't remember it clearly. Okay, no need to panic. Just gotta sample this ink.
*footsteps approaching*
Usagi : Hey, Minako. Not to be a little fender bender, but I'm currently busy, I'd rather do this on my on to give the ink to our author and that's all what I needed. Seriously, do you have any idea of what you--(a person places his hand on Usagi's shoulders)
Sammy Lawrence : So, superhero. You saw all of this, didn't you?
Usagi : Huh? (turns and sees someone behind) What the--!?
*TV BUZZING*
"Back in the present..."
Seto : Back in the 90s, One of Japanese Magical Girl superheroes Sailor Moon have became a victim to the enemy's traps, reports saying that the famous superhero show based a Japanese manga for girls have disappeared for over a year now. The police would investigate saying that Usagi and her friends discovered terribly that the Ink Storage Deparment wasn't Toei Animation's Ink Storage Deparment at all, but was connecting to an old world Toei hidden it for years since the half of the 20th century.
Solva : Yeah, there used to be a lot of great superheroes from all over the world. Maybe, it's just our imagination that Usagi somehow manage to make a comeback, I will surely know who the enemy is and who isn't.
Maka Albarn : Good thing guys. We'll do pay respects to make sure I will find the enemy, if not, maybe that's on you guys. So, no hard feelings right. We got a long ways to find the person to clear my name.
Seto : Wanna go get some Crepes in this city?
Maka Albarn : Maybe, you're right we do wanna have a taste of our own. It's on the house.
Gum : Hey! Look out!
*CRASH!*
Maka Albarn : Ow! Sorry, didn't see you there.
Gum : Next time, be more a little careful in the streets when someone sees in my way.
Maka Albarn : That's okay! I won't do it again, I promise! It is my pleasure to be out of one's way.
Gum : Hey, I know you, you're that girl who got framed for attacking Tokyo and of course the American Public. You should've been 14 by now since you're still thirteen year old kid.
Maka Albarn : Yeah, well...how did you know?
Gum : Luckily, we used to have the same age as you in the past, but you were still the same kid as always. I bet you're the same one from before.
Maka Albarn : I've seen you before, you were that kid who helped me move on to a better life.
Gum : and I clearly remember that the Shattering Event took place 10 years in the same country was definitely, that's what friends are for, Maka Albarn. But you musn't given in yourself.
Maka Albarn : *gasp*
*flashback to 10 years ago...*
[Echo Night Beyond/Nebula BGM : Track 19]
Gum (at age 11) : Hey, don't give in yourself. It's not your fault that you wanted throw yourself away, I could lead you to a better life, why go for all of this trouble when there's someone that you needed the most. After all, you are not by yourself, neither of us is alone, that is what being a friend is for, Maka. We all needed to make ways for us to need ourselves to get out of danger. Trust me, I'm sure that we'll be great pals.
Tsubaki (at age 5) : Yeah, trust me, Maka. You don't want to have something to throw away, you got us, and we need you.
Maka Albarn (at age 4) : Tsubaki.
"flashes back to the present."
Maka Albarn : Yes, I remember, we met on that day. We became great friends, I was there, and Tsubaki was there for me. After I met Makoto, someone had an idea that I would never wanted myself to throw away, you were that girl who helped me.
Gum : Yep, I'm still the same person that I've known you about since you were at age 4 at the summer.
Maka Albarn : Yeah, I was...Still, I haven't thought about Tsubaki, I knew that Tsubaki and I were the only girls known each other since I destroyed fourth-fifths of Japan's people, I couldn't control the powers of Shattered Resonance, Makoto and Tsubaki were the survivors that survived the explosion I caused. But I'm really glad that I get to finally meet you in person, Gum.
Gum : True that.
"Gum : Member of the GGs".
Maka Albarn : So glad to meet, yep! Cause I never changed a bit!
Gum : So do you! Come I'll show you to meet the guys. I'm a member of the GGs.
(Scene changes to Shibuya)
[Humming the Bassline by Hideki Naganuma]
Gum : Welcome to the place that we usually to hang out. Good old Shibuya.
Maka Albarn : So this is where you guys hang out all the time? This is huge, literally huge, so does this bus terminal.
Gum : Of course, That's where the Love Shockers came and attacked our turf, so much for inspiration of that new nintendo in the year 2015, kids turn into squids.
Maka Albarn : 2015? That year? Sounds like that's another foreshadowing.
Ashley : [To Kimial] Do you think that Maka Albarn met a girl who is actually one of Sega's veterans.
Kimial : [To Ashley] To be honest, I think Maka was childhood friends with that girl who does nothing but graffiti in the streets. Cops always have major crackdown on these kids, and the game told us that Graffiti is art, however. Graffiti is an act of vandalism.
Ashley : [To Ashley] True that.
Seto : So, you're a rudie who has been chased by law enforcement, they call you the Rudies, you're friends with someone with his well.
(scene changes to GGs home)
Beat : Gum, where have you bean?
"Beat : Hero of Shibuya and Ex-leader of the GGs".
Tab/Corn : Who's this girl that you're with?
Gum : I'd like you to meet and old friend of mine, her name is Maka Albarn. She usually the girl that I met her 10 years ago.
Tab/Corn : You must be the kid who was outcasted by others.
"Tab/Corn : Future leader of the GGs."
Beat : One of the beings that blew Japan's population in 10 years.
Gum : That's right. Right the first time in 10 years. Maka Albarn, I'd like you to meet my friends, Beat, Tab, Garam, Mew, Yo-Yo, Pirahna, Combo, Cube, and don't forget himself, Slate.
Slate/Soda : Actually I go by the name Soda.
Maka Albarn : Hi, friends of Gum.
Beat : So, you're the kid who was never to Soul World. That's great to here, of becoming a hero like us, we're the Rudies. We live in Tokyo and we prefer to call it Tokyo-to, it's our home.
Maka Albarn : Any relationship with the so-good on-going turf wars.
Tab/Corn : What are you talking about? There aren't any more of these turf wars, the police wouldn't suspect a thing or two about it.
Mew/Rhyth : Well, there is one thing that happened in Tokyo. See this? (holds out a newspaper)
(NEWSPAPER : ROKKAKU ROCKS OUT IN PRISON)
Mew/Rhyth : Oh, uhh, old news. Let me find something else. (changes newspaper) Ah, here we go! This is the one you're looking at. See it for myself.
(NEWSPAPER : GIANT SQUID RETURNS TO HAVE PAYBACK)
Maka Albarn : A newspaper about a giant squid?
Mew/Rhyth : It's that darn ocean sea creature from two years ago. That squid has been messing up all of our graffiti with it's so-called ink that has been over the past years.
Yo-Yo : Some say that the Ink Demon itself has been a making a deal with that squid causing all of the ruckus at town, it's been driving us nuts when they spewed ink finding out that red-plumber had to take the blame.
Maka Albarn : We're you talking Mario fighting against the Blooper Squid?
Gum : Yeah, that's the name of that squid who was last seen at the harbor two years before he made a comeback and I understand why someone wanted to let him release the Kraken?
Kimial : Listen, If I'm really in the mood for sushi right, I would definitely not go for a takoyaki stuff coming from a Blooper. What do I eat beside eating a giant squid?
Ashley : Hope we can pay that Blooper a visit, it has to know something about the Ink Demon paying responisble for the crimes it did. So, you guys need any help for this girl? She's not the worth of a million dollars.
Maka Albarn : I bet I can go for some Sushi, ramen noodles, hamburgers, and everything else. But I can go with some Sake, it's my kinda treat. So, do you boys need anything.
Yo-Yo : (thinking) Well, for some reason. I can't quite to put my finger on it. I should I begin with?
Slate/Soda : Of course...There is one thing.
Yo-Yo : I just can't wait to show that perfectly good body of yours try out! I hope that I wanted to see your body like this, please give me a good look!
*THUNDER CRASH*
Gum : (rolling the newspaper) MAKA. HELP. NOW!
Yo-Yo : Uh, yes, ma'am! We'll help her out right away! Just don't get me started on this one! Sheesh, what a bitch.
Gum : What was that?
Yo-Yo : I said I have an Itch.
Gum : That's what I thought you said. Now get her dressed! Find a proper clothing!
Yo-Yo : Right away! Don't just stand there, let's get to it!
Slate/Soda : That's right!
*ZOOM!*
*Various cartoon sound effects*
Maka Albarn : Hey! What are you doing?! No! Stop! W-Wait!
Yo-Yo : So how do you look?
Maka Albarn : I didn't expect this to be at a certain age to dress this. I feel like I've been a younger girl at my age.
Yo-Yo : That looks really good on you. That octopus should be at the harbor by the time we get there!
Maka Albarn : Uh, Right!
Gum : Tokyo Harbor it is! Let's get going!
Maka Albarn : Uhh, what?
