Top 10 dishes for the festive season
Tumblr media
The holiday season in Nigeria is a time of joy, togetherness, and, of course, indulgence in the country’s rich and diverse culinary traditions. Christmas, in particular, is a festive occasion marked by the preparation and sharing of delicious meals that bring families and communities together. It is always a memorable event for the Christian folks in Nigeria as well as the rest of the world, it is celebrated to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. As in most cultures that celebrate Christmas, the main activities in Nigeria are exchanging presents, buying new clothes, sending cards, and visiting loved ones and places of interest, and, of course, enjoying traditional foods and drinks. In fact, a major component of the Christmas celebration is the consumption of delicious foods and assorted drinks by Nigerians. If you are celebrating Christmas in Nigeria and wondering what to prepare for Christmas, PUNCH Online, in this article, hereby share some Christmas food ideas: 1. Jollof rice Jollof Rice Jollof rice is one of the best delicacies every Nigerian home does not miss for the Christmas celebration. This dish has earned its place in the culinary hall of fame as it is widely acknowledged that no celebration, be it Christmas or any other occasion, is truly complete without it. It is often served with dodo (fried plantain), grilled or fried chicken, steak, and coleslaw. Jollof rice ingredients include long-grain parboiled rice, chicken, tomatoes, tatashe peppers, tomato paste, ginger, and onion. However, the ingredients and preparation methods for jollof rice vary across different regions, contributing to its diverse appeal. These regional distinctions have sparked friendly competition among West African countries, notably between Nigeria and Ghana. The dispute over whose version reigns supreme has evolved into a good-natured rivalry, famously dubbed the “Jollof Wars”. 2. Fried Rice Fried Rice The well-known Nigerian jollof rice has a sibling: fried rice. It is a Nigerian party favourite. It is one of the most popular options throughout the Christmas season. Often many people find it difficult to choose between fried and Jollof rice. This is why they are both sometimes served together. 3. White Rice and Stew or Sauce White Rice and Stew or Sauce White rice and stew is a staple throughout the Christmas season. It has the advantage that the leftovers can be stored for an extra day, unlike other rice meals that lose flavor after the first day. Christmas stew recipes include the popular tomato stew, vegetable stew, and veggie chicken sauce. 4. Pounded Yam and Efo Riro Pounded Yam and Efo Riro Pounded yam and efo riro is a Christmas lunch, it is sometimes referred to as a “knockout meal”, that raises the tempo of the holiday season. Efo riro is a basic traditional vegetable soup native to the Western Region of Nigeria. It can be eaten with white rice, plantains, yams, and other foods. Christmas should always be celebrated with this nourishing meal. 5. Abacha (African Salad) Abacha (African Salad) Christmas is definitely incomplete without this delicious, well-garnished meal from the Eastern part of Nigeria. Abacha is made with shredded cassava and is served as an appetiser. However, it also can be served as a main course and is a delicious and healthy meal. Ukwa (African Bread Fruit Pottage): The Igbo culinary tradition gave rise to Ukwa, commonly known as African breadfruit. Ukwa is widely consumed in the eastern part of Nigeria and competition for it is greatest around Christmas; given its nutritious and delicious qualities, it commands a premium price on the market. Various techniques may be used to produce this meal. You can boil or roast Ukwa, or eat it raw with palm kernel nuts and some people pound it like pounded yam. 6. Fisherman Soup Fisherman Soup This Christmas, let your palate explore the richness of seafood. A well-known dish from the southern regions of Nigeria (particularly Akwa Ibom and Cross River) with a long history, fisherman’s soup is seen as food for the affluent. Nigerian fisherman’s soup is a straightforward Christmas meal prepared using fish and other seafood, depending on taste, including catfish or lobster. 7. Tuwo Shinkafa (Rice Porridge) Tuwo Shinkafa (Rice Porridge) Tuwo Shinkafa is one of the most popular meals in the northern part of Nigeria, especially for special occasions. However, it has been adopted by other cultures and it’s a delight to many. Tuwo Shinkafa is made from rice and served with any preferred soup but popularly with bean soup. There’s no perfect Christmas without tuwo in Northern Nigeria. 8. Ofada Rice and Stew Ofada Rice and Stew Ofada rice, a local and more aromatic variety, is often paired with Ayamase Sauce or designer stew, a spicy pepper sauce made with assorted meats. The dish is a staple at Yoruba celebrations. Ofada rice is a flavorful rice cultivated in several regions of Nigeria. Since some of the rice bran is still attached to the grain, it has a stronger flavor than conventional rice. Ofada stew has a warm, reviving flavor that will have you wanting more when served over Ofada rice. 9. Ofe Nsala (White Soup) Ofe Nsala (White Soup) Ofe Nsala is a traditional Igbo soup made with a blend of spices, yams, and either goatmeat or fish. The light-colored soup is rich in flavor and often enjoyed during festive occasions. It can be paired with pounded yam. 10. Amala and Ewedu Soup Amala and Ewedu Soup Amala is a dark, smooth, and savory porridge-like dish made from yam, plantains, or cassava. It is often served with Ewedu Soup, a flavorful soup made from jute leaves paired with fish or meat soup. Read the full article

Feeling a Sweet Sensation in Lagos
Tumblr media
The last time I was in Lagos, Nigeria, I took a trip to Sweet Sensation. Sweet Sensation is an authentic Nigerian indegenous brand of restaurant that serves authentic Nigerian indigenous cuisine. This restaurant has some sentimental significance for me; It’s where I had my very first birthday. Sweet Sensation is primarily based in Lagos state; one of the 36 states in Nigeria with the city of Lagos being the most populous city in Nigeria. The owner chose to stay in Lagos for the most part because she owns each individual Sweet Sensation branch; It is not a franchise business, so she wanted to maintain the quality of service at each branch by ensuring operations are not expanded too far.
Courtesy to customers is given highest attention by all staff at Sweet Sensation. Everything is centered around providing customers with a memorable and enjoyable experience from the moment you enter the vicinity. Each Sweet Sensation branch is designed to have ample parking space. The car and bus are main modes of transport in Nigeria so they have to cater for all there customers. On entering the restaurant you will see that each Sweet Sensation branch is uniquely designed on the exterior and interior. The motivation behind the design is to attract all age groups and particularly children. They were the first restaurant in Nigeria to introduce play areas with toys for children to spend time in after they finished eating.
Tumblr media
Speaking of food! People love to eat and eat well in Nigeria. You cannot host an occasion in Nigeria without serving food. Having said that, Sweet Sensation hosts a wide array of Nigerian cuisine. From yam and egg, swallow (This is a group of foods that you are supposed to swallow and not chew when eating. Some examples include garri, ebba, pounded yam, pounded rice...Oh yes, you heard that right.) and sweet potato to your staple rice, stew, fish, plantain, moin-moin (made with beans) and more. Sweet Sensation have you covered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also have a signature dish called farmhouse pottage. It’s lime-green in colour and is a Sweet Sensation trade secret. They are the only ones in Nigeria who produce this dish. They also serve yam pottage which is orange in colour and well known throughout Nigeria.
Tumblr media
When you are placing your order in Sweet Sensation, you wait in line then point at the foods you would like in your meal and the server will dish them for you on your tray then you can pay by cash or card. Sweet Sensation was the first restaurant in Nigeria to introduce trays for customer convenience and to speed up order processing. They also have a unique cooking style. For example, when they are cooking yam and egg, they don’t cook the yam and egg separately. They cook them together so the egg sticks to the yam. Delicious!
They serve nice big portions so you can eat well. The food is quite filling. You will literally taste the value for money. They also serve pastries like meat pie, and cake on special order at all branches and do delivery as well. In fact, people order food for delivery from Sweet Sensation just so they can get their special takeaway pack. They also have halls for social occasions like birthday parties that people can rent out.
Tumblr media
Sweet Sensation is a special restaurant in Nigeria that many Nigerians grew up with and know well. If you want to try Nigerian cuisine, eat a filling meal and get a taste for the culture through the food then this is the place to be. I hope you enjoy your customer experience here too and that it is a memorable and sweet sensation!

“Big enough” Abeni jokes, grinning up at Roach and snickering
Yams tended to grow in really big sizes, and though Roach hadn’t found the biggest
It was more than enough for one meal
She hands over the plate to Ed with a snort “Might wanna keep some milk on hand” she teases, remembering the amount of peppers she’d put in
It wasn’t overwhelming but it was good for a joking remark
She sits down with her own bowl of pottage, clinking her spoon with Roach’s “Well, what is it those French guys says? Bon something tit?” She jokes, laughing and cackling “Dig in!”
Stede blows on his spoonful, looking hesitant. But he takes a big mouthful, trusting Roach far more than any pirate captain should trust any of their crew, really.
His eyes widen. "Wow! That's much better than it looks!"

Bukka Hut Lekki
Block 69A, Plot 8, Admiralty Way, Lekki, Lagos.
If you’re looking for authentic Nigerian food at an affordable price, Bukka Hut is your place!
I decided to go to the Bukka Hut in Lekki with a friend for a lunch date because I was craving Nigerian food and was tired of cooking at home! I had never been there before so I really did not know what to expect. Unlike restaurants where you sit and wait to be served, Bukka hut does its best to keep to the idea of a Bukka, which is basically like a road side joint where you can get fresh hot Nigerian food, from Jollof Rice to Swallow.
The interior was quite dark and dingy when I got in which was off putting and I felt turning around. However, like any new experience, I decided to meet it with an open heart.
They have a wide variety of food and serve different things like Yam Pottage, Peppered Snails and other Nigerian food. They have an orderly queue and system in which you tell the person serving behind the counter what you would like to eat, and they add it to your plate then total your bill at the end. I was mainly there to judge one thing on this visit, and that was their Jollof Rice.
If you can see the picture clearly, you can see that the portion was quite good. I had the full portion of Rice and I struggled to finish it because I was so full. The Chicken was also big, which is always nice.
In terms of taste, the Jollof rice was really, really good. It tasted like Party Jollof with a with a bit more edge to it. I could taste a bit of Ginger in the rice and that got me excited as I have been hooked on Jollof rice cooked with Ginger recently. I also liked the fact that it was not too oily, and I had it with a bit of Stew on top, which was a tasty fried stew (or Obedindin in Yoruba).
Now although the Chicken was big and nice, I was a really disappointed because their ‘peppered Chicken’ had virtually no pepper at all. I was expecting some proper heat in the Chicken but sadly it did not live up to its name. Also it seemed as though it had been a bit over fried as it was dry and tough to chew in some places. My lunch date had the moin moin, and she mentioned that even that had more pepper than the chicken!
Bill
Jollof Rice N450
Water N100
Chicken N600
Final Verdict
In conclusion, although the Chicken disappointed me due to their price and the quality of their Jollof rice, I can definitely see myself coming back to try their Amala and Efo/Ewedu (although with no Peppered Chicken again!).

“That’s what the leaves are for!” She jokes, pointing and laughing at the remains of the other veggies, all gone into the mashy mess of the pot
Soon the table is set, drinks and cutlery placed as Abeni and Roach set down the big pot, shouting over the deck “Come get your grub!!”
The plates all get filled, a heaping plop of yam pottage on every one, passed on along the table “Eat it while it’s hot guys, I’m stealing the rest” she jokes even as she helps pass the plates
"How big was that fuckin' yam?" Ed mutters, looking around the table.
