Nimona by N.D. Stevenson
goodreads
Tumblr media
Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from N.D. Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones. Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.
Mod opinion: It's been a couple of years since I read this graphic novel, but I remember enjoying it :)

⭐️✨LUNAR BOY RECIEVED ANOTHER STARRED REVIEW FROM KIRKUS REVIEWS!!!✨⭐️
We now have two starred reviews, from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly! Starred Kirkus reviews are extremely rare and difficult to get, we're beyond blown away that Lunar Boy was able to get such a prestigious mark. Reading a review praising the Indonesian and queer representation has me all in my feelings.

Y'all, I've been sitting on this for TEN MONTHS and now I finally get to talk about it!!!
I have a new QUEER YA HORROR graphic novel coming in 2026! Creepy ghosts, deep queer friendships, gender euphoria and trans self-realization... oh, and a haunted high school musical! It's exactly the type of horror story with heart that I always wanted to tell but didn't think I'd ever be "allowed" to..... and now I finally can!
(Different name 'cause it's YA, but yep, that's me!)
Pretty sure my agent and editor aren't on tumblr, but I still have to shout them out because they are AMAZING. Jen Azantian believed in this story from the start, and her feedback made me cry (in a good way). And Alex Aceves immediately understood the heart of the story, and her feedback has just been incredible. She knows exactly how to bring out the best in a story like this.
I can't wait to share it with all of you!

🔎 YA Under the Radar 7 🔍
I have been working on this list in the series all year 😂 it just took me that long to read a decent amount of underrated YA - but I got there in the end and I'm pretty happy with the recs on this list 🥰
there are rainbow flags next to LGBT+ rep, wheelchair symbols next to disability rep and koalas next to Australia YA simply because there's a lot of that on this particular list
so take a gander and maybe consider picking up a title or two (or ten) in 2024 to support lesser-known authors and books 😊

What would people like to see represented more in fiction? Gender, sexuality, race, neurodivergence, etc.
What do you feel is inaccurately portrayed and how can it be fixed?

OUT NOW for FREE, Laika Wallace’s second novel, Lured to the Lake
Tumblr media
cover art by @snommie
Learning how to love your family, love yourself, and love the people right in front of you…
The second installment in the Shimmering Lake Summer Camp series, Lured to the Lake follows Ava and Sid as they attend the second session of camp, one year after Ronnie and Morgan did. Ava and her siblings, Gwen and Henry, have lived a long life of hardship. Even now that they’re living happily with their adoptive family, they struggle to handle the way life has treated them. Ava feels she will never be free of the shadow of their father, with Henry mirroring him more and more every day. When even the camp proves to not be a safe escape for her, it takes a lot, from love to magic, for her to feel safe again. But at the end of the summer, she discovers she is more than a scared little girl. Meanwhile, Sid finds himself caught in a strange world, falling in love with a fellow camper who can turn into a lion, and lured to the lake by the mournful songs of a glittering white kelpie. But they’re not the only thing lurking in the waters of Shimmering Lake, and a love triangle is the least of Sid’s problems…

BROOMS cover reveal!!
Tumblr media
It's 1930s Mississippi. Magic is permitted only in certain circumstances, and by certain people. Unsanctioned broom racing is banned. But for those who need the money, or the thrills...it's there to be found.
Meet Billie Mae, captain of the Night Storms racing team, and Loretta, her best friend and second-in-command. They're determined to make enough money to move out west to a state that allows Black folks to legally use magic and take part in national races. Cheng-Kwan - doing her best to handle the delicate and dangerous double act of being the perfect "son" to her parents, and being true to herself while racing. Mattie and Emma -- Choctaw and Black -- the youngest of the group and trying to dodge government officials who want to send them and their newly-surfaced powers away to boarding school. And Luella, in love with Billie Mae. Her powers were sealed away years ago after she fought back against the government. She'll do anything to prevent the same fate for her cousins.
Brooms is a queer, witchy Fast and the Furious that shines light on history not often told - it's everything you'd ever want to read in a graphic novel.
Co-created by Jasmine Walls & Teo DuVall Written by Jasmine Walls, illustated by Teo DuVall, with colors by Bex Glendining, and letters by Ariana Maher

Across a Field of Starlight by Blue Delliquanti
goodreads
Tumblr media
When they were kids, Fassen's fighter spaceship crash-landed on a planet that Lu's survey force was exploring. It was a forbidden meeting between a kid from a war-focused resistance movement and a kid whose community and planet are dedicated to peace and secrecy. Lu and Fassen are from different worlds and separate solar systems. But their friendship keeps them in each other's orbit as they grow up. They stay in contact in secret as their communities are increasingly threatened by the omnipresent, ever-expanding empire. As the empire begins a new attack against Fassen's people--and discovers Lu's in the process--the two of them have the chance to reunite at last. They finally are able to be together...but at what cost? This beautifully illustrated graphic novel is an epic science fiction romance between two non-binary characters as they find one another through time, distance, and war.
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this graphic novel before, but now I really want to read it, it sounds interesting! According to reviews the romance part promised in the summary is not really a thing though, which is fine for me personally, but I would say it sounds as if you are looking for a fluffy romance than you won't find it here.
