BROOMS cover reveal!!
Tumblr media
It's 1930s Mississippi. Magic is permitted only in certain circumstances, and by certain people. Unsanctioned broom racing is banned. But for those who need the money, or the thrills...it's there to be found.
Meet Billie Mae, captain of the Night Storms racing team, and Loretta, her best friend and second-in-command. They're determined to make enough money to move out west to a state that allows Black folks to legally use magic and take part in national races. Cheng-Kwan - doing her best to handle the delicate and dangerous double act of being the perfect "son" to her parents, and being true to herself while racing. Mattie and Emma -- Choctaw and Black -- the youngest of the group and trying to dodge government officials who want to send them and their newly-surfaced powers away to boarding school. And Luella, in love with Billie Mae. Her powers were sealed away years ago after she fought back against the government. She'll do anything to prevent the same fate for her cousins.
Brooms is a queer, witchy Fast and the Furious that shines light on history not often told - it's everything you'd ever want to read in a graphic novel.
Co-created by Jasmine Walls & Teo DuVall Written by Jasmine Walls, illustated by Teo DuVall, with colors by Bex Glendining, and letters by Ariana Maher

Out this week: Dear Dad (Graphix, $14.99):
This graphic memoir details the life of Jay Jay Patton, with help from co-writer Kiara Valdez and art by Markia Jenai. Patton grew up with her father in prison, and her only contact with him was through letters. Now he’s coming home. The OGN details this new stage in their relationship and how they’d go on to create an app that connects incarcerated parents with their kids.

The Strange Case of Harleen & Harley by Melissa Marr and Jenn St-Onge. Cover by St-Onge. Out in September.
"A new YA take on how Harleen became Harley!
When Harleen signs up to participate in a clinical research trial with her girlfriend, Pamela, her only goals are extra cash and a chance to control her anxiety. But what she gets instead are increasingly larger gaps in her memory and stolen mementos from some guy named Jack. Soon, Harleen discovers she’s sharing her life with Harley—a take-no-prisoners, who-cares-about-attendance, maybe-we-oughtasave- the-bunnies kind of girl. She is the opposite of Harleen in every way. And although she’s throwing Harleen’s life completely off track, maybe she ain’t so bad either…
New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr (Wicked Lovely) and celebrated artist Jenn St-Onge (Bingo Love) explore the twisted transformation from Harleen to Harley in this compelling YA graphic novel!"

Our Game Now Chapter 8: The Other Yugi
Tumblr media
https://archiveofourown.org/works/40135344/chapters/105191394#workskin
Needless to say… the siblings were not prepared for when Akira came to get them from Burger World. They thought they would be but nothing could brace them for the smothering he unleashed on them when he reached them.
"Thank Ra! You're both safe!"
He hugged both his children close to him, kissing their heads.
"Daddy…" Natsuki sniffled, burying her face into his chest. "He was really scary…"
"I know sweetie, I know…" Akira nuzzled her head. "But you're unharmed, both of you."
"Yeah…" Yugi whispered, keeping close to Akira… his eyes following where Tetsuo was.
The man was being carted off into a police car… while the manager of Burger World was being taken away in an ambulance.
Hope he'll be okay…
Akira held his children close for another moment before pulling back, looking at them with misty eyes.
"We're going straight home. Understand?"
"Yes, Daddy." Natsuki nodded.
Yugi nodded.
"Though… one last thing."
He pulled away, going to where Anzu was.
She was seated at the back of an ambulance, a blanket around her shoulders.
"Anzu?" He asked.
She looked in his direction, giving a small smile.
"Hey, Yugi."

Here's a great bit of visual storytelling from Faith Erin Hicks (@faitherinhicks) in Pumpkinheads (written by Rainbow Rowell).
Spoilers for a book that came out in 2019.
Pumpkinheads is a romance and this panel comes after its two leads, Deja and Josiah, have had "a moment" together.
Tumblr media
On the surface of it, here are two characters that just shared a moment happily smiling. They're both lost in their own worlds for a second, with genuine joy on their faces. But there's more than that going on.
Deja has long had feelings for Josiah, but she's felt they were unreciprocated, and she's largely chosen to move on from those feelings, so she's slightly turned away from him in this panel.
Meanwhile Josiah's just starting to become aware he likes Deja as more than a friend, so he's angled slightly towards her, showing his growing openness to these new feelings.
But neither one has said anything about how they feel to the other yet. Hicks visually expresses this by creating a break in the corn behind them.
Though they are sitting right next to each other, there is a gulf between them they've yet to close. It's just great visual storytelling.
