the first time I read the “he told them everything” scene before the reveal, I was SO prepared to defend wylan with every bit of my soul. bc a sixteen year old boy getting the shit beaten out of him on the orders of his father, who had tried to kill him over and over again just bc of his disability—the disability that brings him so much shame still? yeah, even if he had told his father everything for real, I would have stood by him. anyone who wouldn’t have truly does not understand just how much trauma wylan faced within such a short period of time.

a list of some of the horrible things jan van eck did that get forgotten:
Proudly fessed up to beating Wylan when he was a child as a method to get him to read
Married a teenager TWO YEARS OLDER than his sixteen year old son and got her pregnant
Watched unfazed as Wylan got tortured by gang members in front of him (not that he literally hasn’t tried to have Wylan killed several times but I feel this takes a certain kind of evil)
Put his wife in a mental institution because she gave him a son who couldn’t read
Kidnapped a sixteen year old girl and tried to break her legs with a mallet so it’d induce as much pain as possible (who the fuck does this)

fuck, it's actually crazy that kaz (and the other crows bar matthais and wylan) is seventeen. SEVENTEEN? like, what? i just wanna give them all a hug. and even more so wylan. that boy is SIXTEEN! they all deserve to be going to school and coming home to a warm fire and even warmer smiles from their parents asking how school was. they deserve to only have to worry about irritating teachers and catty classmates i-

Being Kanej's daughter head canons
I know people have different opinions about whether or not Kaz and Inej would ever get so far as to have biological kids so I'm going to leave it up to you whether the reader is adopted or not.
CW: Kaz and Inej trauma mentioned in passing very briefly no description, swearing,
-Both Kaz and Inej were really scared to have kids because what if they mess it up? What if they pass on their respective traumas? Maybe they just aren't cut out to be parents.
-But then they hold this little baby in their arms for the first time and it's like holy shit? Kaz isn't really an emotional guy but he's just filled with this overwhelming desire to protect this little human because it's so fucking cute and he wants to give them the childhood he never had. Inej just wants to hold you forever and never let go.
-They're obviously very busy people but they take time off their responsibilities for you and kinda just chill for a bit never wanting to miss a moment.
-You're a very happy baby
-Your first word is crow. Kaz is secretly thrilled, Inej is a little disappointed but ma comes soon after quickly followed by da.
-One day when the crow club is closed Kaz is cleaning up with a two year old you on his hip, Wylan and Jesper are sitting at the bar and Kaz starts cooing and smiling at you and Jesper asks, "You know we could tell everybody about this and ruin your reputation?" Wylan follows it up with, "Why are you doing this in front of us?", And Kaz says with a straight face "Because no one will ever believe you"
-Inej teaches you how to wield a knife by age five
-Speaking of Inej she also teaches you how to slip into the shadows and be absolutely silent
-You have a running bet to see how can sneak up on Kaz.
-Neither of you have been successful
-By the time you're thirteen you start begging your parents to join the crows it does not work.
-But when you turn fourteen you play a lookout on a mission.
-By the time you turn sixteen you are a full member of the crows.
-Neither of your parents are very happy about this but they know you're capable of taking care of yourself.
-Speaking of that if anyone touches you or looks at you they will face a fate much worse then death
-When you start dating your partner faces hours of interrogation not only to figure out if they're trustworthy but also in your parent's opinion "If they aren't willing to sit through hours of your parents yelling at them they aren't the one"
-But you do find someone who had such a slow burn romance with you they didn't even realize you liked each other until they were full on shipping the two of you and you were both hardcore pining.
-This is my first post and if you'd like to hear about this particular OC tell me
Anyway I doubt anyone will read this but if you do and you enjoy it like, reblog, comment whatever.
I've been waiting to see this for so long but have been to scared to request anything but if anyone has any other ideas for this feel free to add because I kinda hate this and if you could tag me that would be great.

The crows rated by how much the fandom overlooks their trauma
6. Kaz Everyone here fully acknowledges that Kaz had a shit childhood.
5. Wylan I feel like there’s a few people who overlook it but it’s still very acknowledged.
4. Inej Her trauma tends to be overshadowed by Kaz, but everyone still recognises it.
3. Matthias I don’t really have anything to add on so yeah.
2. Jesper His mom died and y’all reduce him to a comic relief character with no trauma
1.Nina Nina fucking wins this. She grew up in an orphanage, and then she joined a child army. She saw her boyfriend die at sixteen. I’ve literally only see one person mention her trauma.

back on my ignoring the very real final exam i have due at midnight tonight bullshit to spread the word of modern au!six of crows/leverage crossover (once again thanks to sav @grasslandgirl for indulging me and providing some of these soundbites). aka,
nate: who are these. Children?
kaz: ill fucking kill you
pekka rollins is a powerful hedge fund manager who embezzles on the side. all of his crime is very much in the shadows. he is a master of disguise, picking up and moving away and managing various identities such that it’s taken him a really long time to cross the leverage crew’s radar
kaz brekker has been hunting this man for seven years. he does not appreciate the sudden intrusion of a strange group of people into rollins’ business just as he’s assembled his crew (the thief inej, the hitters jesper and matthias, the grifter nina, the hacker wylan), about to make his move. either they get out of his way or they are going down, too.
SHENANIGANS!
eliot: the thing about guns is that they have a certain range of efficacy
jesper: lmao rip to you but im different
parker and inej instant bestfriendship. inej is vicious with a set of knives but parker introduces her to the taser and that’s good, too. that’s really good.
wylan is the most vicious bastard hacker hardison has ever encountered. he plays so dirty it’s almost funny. dyslexia has made him adapt an entirely new universe of methods and chaos WISHES he was capable of the drunken mastery wylan spews from his fingers. he built his computer from scratch and it’s just this wonderful horrible color coded abomination.
sophie: is that... is that jan van eck’s son?
hardison: i don’t know who that is but i sort of want to wrap him in bubble wrap. is that weird? *the lights go off* ok he just blew out the entire power grid for our block
nina and sophie have one of those meetings where they both play off each other and then an alarm goes off somewhere and they both sort of come to a mutual understanding and “oh, you’re good.” “you’re good! honestly, i never would have known.” “that accent was fantastic. and the mannerisms! where on earth did you learn that?”
nate is still concerned about the fact that these are literal children. honestly, eliot is too. parker, hanging from the rafters eating trail mix, reminds them that she was a getaway driver at age eleven. hardison points out that he hacked the bank of iceland when he was sixteen. sophie just shrugs. “what can you do about it? seriously, what can you do about it? they’ve already broken out of prison twice.”
“twice,” nate mutters. “that’s just excessive.”
“well,” sophie responds, “as nina explained it to me, the first time they were just breaking matthias out. and the second time, they got sent in on purpose.”
nate sends a prayer to the ceiling.

behind the scenes asks: 10,15 👀, 16,18
[questions]
10 answered
15: A Hollywood producer tells you that they want to film just one of your fics. Which fic would you want it to be?
the side eyes 😂 my only real question is, can this producer source kit young and jack wolfe for it (NOT for an E fic, dear god). it feels like a copout but i'd go for the ballet dancer/bodyguard au that i havent even finished writing yet 😅
16: What is your most underrated fic?
i think it's minuet in d major, which is always my favourite but never one i talk about enough and never one that gets picked up in backreads. or possibly the marya character study but that did well considering it was mostly a gen fic
18: What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.
ok this is long so i'm gonna put it under the cut, but it's the flashback scene in silly little love notes - tw for previous illness/recovery/referenced amputation
i really adored this scene for the way it built panic and anxiety really slowly and subtly - which, very frankly, i really enjoy doing and think i do very well. it also really hits home the core message of that fic which is that he is TRYING, so hard, all the time, and that's a wonderful thing in itself that's so important to remember and take note of and celebrate, except it's fucking hard at the same time.
the whole thing as a section i really love, but the bit in green (from "he did try." to "he'd been sixteen.") is just. my favourite bit. it was so easy to craft and flows so well, and sets up this really big horrible thing that happened when he was a kid after the readers have seen all of the ways he's been working to take care of himself since, and the ways he still struggles, and then suddenly get this context for just how bad it actually was - but then the fact that it goes straight back to the "fucking hell he's trying" kind of message, it's really well book ended.
and this whole fic is very much a wesper fic but at it's core it's mostly about wylan taking care of himself and learning to be okay and learning to let people help him and accept kindness without feeling guilty for it.
--
He’s trying to be kinder to himself.
Wylan scans his over the messy collection of them, passively taking in the shapes the text makes on each little square. It’s become a comfort of sorts, and he never knew that the written word could be that, for him. Stories used to be reassuring, when he was a little boy spending too many nights in hospital wards being read to by his mother, sometimes even his father. He doesn’t know when being read to turned into some dreadful chore for his father, but he thinks he knows why. It was a failing on Wylan’s part, because he couldn’t just read to himself. It was his fault, surely, just like it was a failing on his part that he wasn’t just healthy, that he wasn’t just like everyone else.
It’s like you aren’t even trying to get better, Wylan.
He did try. He really did, wanting so badly to just be fucking normal. He could pretend, though, and he did, semi-successfully. Swallowing back every cough and not bothering anyone when he was frankly exhausted but still expected to be sitting upright at a desk. Picking at his food or, most often, saying he’d already eaten when asked, even when his appetite was gone completely and he’d forgotten how long it had been since he’d last had any substantial amount of food. It had worked fine, he was fine, even if he kept aching, even if his hands trembled, even when he had black spots in the corner of his vision when he stood up.
It worked. No one noticed.
Or, no one noticed until he collapsed at a very public dinner party because he hadn’t eaten in days and his blood pressure had dropped so dangerously low and –
His fingers crumple the note he holds in his hands without him realising. A twitch of his hands, a panic response, the same thing that always happens when his head starts down that trail into the anxious memory of what he’d almost done to himself. He still doesn’t quite have his head around all the terms and words the doctors had used. Nothing more than poor circulation, and dangerously low blood pressure, and risk of amputation, and unlikely you’d ever relearn to play the flute.
He’d been sixteen.
He’s twenty three now and, if not healthy, then getting healthier. He goes to the gym three times a week. He eats a meal every single day, an actual meal, and is trying his damn fucking hardest to do more. He’s trying.
Wylan Van Eck is a creature held together with stubborn kindness: he petulantly refuses not to love himself. He brings snacks to the gym, and to work, and tries to remember to eat them, and he drinks water, and tries to avoid drinking five cups of tea a day, and he’s trying, and he is trying.
Ghezen, he’s trying so hard.

oof that got long sorry 😂

Page Eighty-Three- Kaz Brekker
Real (Page Eighty-Three series, part 3)
And thus, here we arrive at the end of the Page Eighty-Three series! I’ve been working on it almost a week now, and had the idea brewing in my brain for two weeks beforehand, so, considering the way that I’ve chosen to publish all the parts, it’s not gonna be a very emotional goodbye for you guys, but for me, oddly enough, it is?
Its the first fic I’ve done that’s been more than two parts, and I guess that adds to it? I don’t know! But, anyways, on with it!
Also, a gentle reminder, I only have Kaz being a little on the touchier side because this is a bit of an AU of sorts, and they’re around twenty four in this last part, which gave him time to work on his trauma more and get comfortable with touch!
Fic type- fluffy as fuck
Warnings- a very brief mention of the flashback in the first chapter (to be specific, nina says ‘stopped you from getting hatecrimed’) and a brief sexual innuendo

T H R E E Y E A R S L A T E R
You knocked out after you’d killed your father, and went home completely unconscious on Inej’s boat, tucked onto a cot with Kaz at your side. Genya had decided to spend a little time around Ketterdam, get to know the ins and outs and provide intel for Nikolai when he asked for it, and Nina had decided that her home could be Ketterdam for four months of every year.
Inej did her thing, catching and killing slavers all around the globe, but her visits to Ketterdam became more frequent after you’d gotten back.
Jesper took your amplifier and made it a project for himself, removing the claw from the obsidian and instead using his fabrikator abilities to turn it into a bracelet that you wore on your right hand, made of gold, with the claw dulled out so that it didn’t poke you when you moved your wrist.
A year after you’d returned home, when yourself and Kaz had gone into his office one morning, book clutched in one of your hands, the other interlaced with Kaz’s fingers, you found a box sitting on his desk.
A note from Zoya was taped to the top of it.
A top tier bitch deserves a top tier amplifier, it read. Bracelet. Wear it on your right wrist. It’ll go with the bear claw wrapped in gold.
You kept the note, reading it to yourself whenever you needed a laugh, giggling about it with Nina when she needed a laugh, too.
All of those small moments ended up leading to a much bigger one, though. The day that Kaz proposed.
It was a pretty simple proposal, but you loved it.
--
“I had to get advice from Jes about this,” was how he started it, even before he’d gotten down onto one knee. “He proposed to Wylan in the fall, and I know that the Winter makes Ketterdam look absolutely stunning, and I know that you like the scenery, so, well, here we are.”
You’d been walking around Ketterdam, the clicking of Kaz’s cane against the pavement a soothing sound for the both of you.
You’d managed to make it near the outskirts of Ketterdam just by walking, as Kaz’s leg was being decent to him and he wanted to walk until you’d arrived at one of the more scenic spots. You indulged him for the sake of it, making sure you took breaks and that he got water when he was tired.
It’d been snowing, and the sky had yet to darken beyond a light grey. You and Kaz both had snow in your hair, but to one another, it just added to handsomeness, so neither of you moved to brush the snow out of your hair or off your faces.
“When we were seventeen,” he began, feeling for the box in his pocket. The one with a ring inside, cushioned by red, velvety fabric. “You read me a quote from the book I’d gotten you that day. You’ve memorized just about every poem in it since, and I happen to have done the same thing.”
“The quote that you read to me was from The Sun and Her Flowers. It was on page eighty three,” he grinned at you, a fully fledged smile. Something he saved for you and you exclusively.
“I’m going to change the wording a bit, because it’s in the past tense, and we’re not past tense. The quote was ‘you were mine, and my life was full,’,” he said. “I’m changing it to ‘you are mine, and my life is full.’ Because thats how I feel.”
“Kaz?” You asked. “Do you have something planned?” He raised an eyebrow at you as he clutched the box.
“I suck at words, so, from Rupi Kaurs book Milk and Honey, I offer you this,” he carefully got down onto a knee, using his cane to keep him steady for a few quiet moments as you realized what was happening.
“‘You are every hope and dream I’ve ever had, in human form.” He pulled out the ring, opening the box and holding it out to you. “That’s page forty nine, love.”
“If you can’t think of an answer, please, just-- anything works,” if Jesper had told sixteen year old Kaz Brekker that he’d end up on his knees, begging you for a response to his proposal at just twenty two, he’d have called Jesper crazy.
“Yes,” you mumbled. “Yes, Kaz Brekker. If you’re asking me to marry you, it’s an immediate yes.” He used his cane to get himself up to standing again, slipping the ring onto your ring finger and accepting the hug that you pulled him into.
You were going to marry Kaz Brekker, the love of your life, and you couldn’t wait for it.
--
The day seemed to come at you quickly, even though you’d not set the date until Winter of year that you turned twenty four.
First, it was calling Nikolai and asking if you could cash in the reward for killing your father and doing him and the world a justice that they deserved, then it was finding suitable tuxedos and sending out invitations and planning a million different things at once.
But, eventually, you, Jesper, Wylan, Genya, and Nina, were all on Inejs boat, headed toward the Little Palace.
Then, all of the sudden, you were in the last stretch of time before the wedding. Alina, Mal, Genya, Zoya, and Nina were talking as Genya tailored you, getting rid of some of the blemishes and fixing up little things about your face that you’d asked her to tailor until the end of the ceremony.
“It’s weird,” Alina said, pressing a kiss to Mals cheek as she glanced at her own wedding ring. “I remember you as this fourteen year old boy who used to gawk at the attractive guys in the Second Army, the boy who resented his powers and swore at his father at any chance that he got, and now you’re and you’re completely different.”
“Different how?”
“Kaz Brekker,” Genya said, running her finger under one of your eyes gently, as to get rid of your eyebags. “He’s good for you.”
“And you don’t resent your powers anymore,” Zoya adds. “You don’t use them often, but you don’t resent them.”
“You use them, don’t you, mate?” Mal quipped. “Or were my eyes tricking me when I went to wake you and Brekker up this morning, only to find you keeping light out of your room with a flick of your bloody wrist?”
“I was tired,” you pouted. “Kaz and I both were!”
“Ah, newlyweds,” Nina joked.
“It’s not like that!” You shouted. “Zoya, help me out!”
“He’s able to kiss you now,” she said. “Like, with tongue and stuff. Theres no reason he wouldn’t be able to enjoy a fun little tumble with you here and there!”
“’Tongue, and stuff,’” Mal repeated. “Yes, Zoya, because, as a twenty six year old woman, that’s totally adult phrasing.”
“I wouldn’t have been able to describe it any better,” Nina quipped. Genya and Alina hummed their agreement as Genya moved to your hair, fluffing it and styling it so it that it looked nice as you adjusted the cuffs on your dress shirt.
“Wheres my blazer?” You asked, grabbing your tie from Genyas lap, tying it as she evened out some of the color near your roots.
“Closet,” Alina answered. “I’ll get it for you!” Mal checked his watch.
“We’ve got three minutes to get down there,” he said. “Lets make the most of Y/Ns remaining 180 seconds unmarried.” You laughed, rolling your eyes as Genya stood, helping you up after.
Nina shot Genya a glance, and she took the hint, ushering Alina, Mal and Zoya out of the room and passing Nina your blazer as she left.
Nina helped you into your blazer, running her thumb along your cheek with a smile.
“I never thought I’d see Kaz Brekker married,” she said. “But hey, I guess stopping you from getting hatecrimed had it’s benefits, didn’t it?”
You laughed, shrugging.
“I think that we’ll rebuild some of the Slat,” you said. “Make the rooms bigger. Get plaques declaring whos room is whos.”
“A golden plaque with Nina Zenik emblazoned on it?”
“Bolted to your bedroom door, Neens.”
“I love you, Morozova.” She said, trapping you into a tight hug.
“I love you back, Zenik.” You said. “Now, c’mon. I don’t think anyone would take too kindly to me being late for my own bloody wedding, would they?”
--
The wedding was small, taking place close to the entrance of the Little Palace. There were no chairs to sit on, but the few guests you’d invited didn’t mind it whatsoever.
The guest list was fairly small, considering your tight knit little family. Wylan was Kaz’s best man, Your best woman was Nina. The people standing in the small crowd were all familiar faces.
Wylans mother, Marya Hendriks, and Jespers father, Colm Fahey were the oldest there. Among them were Nikolai, Alina, Mal, Genya, Rotty and Specht, and the two members of the Dregs who’d originated the King of the Barrel nicknames. Their names were Terrowin and Kira, and when you caught their eyes, they were beaming at you both.
Jesper was officiating, and as you met his gaze, you remembered how he was practically bouncing off the walls the day that you’d asked him to officiate.
“Okay, now that they’re both here, we can begin!” Jesper couldn’t hide his excitement.
“Mr. Brekker,” Jesper laughed through the words. He’d not called Kaz ‘Mr. Brekker’ unless he was doing so in a jokey context. You knew that, had it been anyone elses wedding, they’d probably have gotten angry at Jesper for giggling through the words, but for you and Kaz, it just added to an already perfect day. “Do you take Y/N as your lawfully wedded husband?”
“I do,” he said.
“Mr. Morozova,” Jesper glanced at you, and you met his gaze, having to stifle laughter when you realized just how wide his grin was. How happy he seemed. He looked like he was about to start bouncing off the walls and screaming with joy. “Do you take Kaz as your lawfully wedded husband?”
“Hells yes,” you said, giggling slightly. For a moment, Kaz let his lips lift into a grin. You matched it with your own smile and took his hand into yours.
“You’ve prepared your own vows, so, Mr. Brekker, sir, you go first!” Kaz glanced at Jesper inquisitively, grin still on his face as he started talking and met your eye.
“I’ve loved you as long as I’ve known you,” he said. “And when my heart says something, I’ve learned to listen to it. I love you with my entire heart and so much more, and I hate that I’m not good with words, because that’s all I can say. Nothing else accurately cultivates the feelings I’ve felt for you since that night, when you were broken and bruised underneath that saintsforsaken lamplight. I promise to love you every minute of every day, Brekker.” You’d agreed to change your last name to his. You’d be Y/N Brekker by the end of the night.
“Mr. Brekker,” Jesper said. “Since you’ll be married in a few minutes and I have to get used to that last name on you, you may say your vows!”
“When I was fifteen, I was caught and beat broken by a group of eight eighteen year olds,” you began. “But you saved my ass before I was killed, and it seems as though our relationship has been a series of saves ever since. Kaz Brekker, with the ring I’m about to put on your finger, I’m promising that I’ll do that forever. Please, though, try to avoid getting yourself kidnapped too often, okay?” His chest shook in silent laughter as he nodded.
“The rings, gentlepeople?” Jesper asked, Nina passed you the ring you’d slip into Kaz’s finger, and Wylan passed Kaz the one he’d put onto yours.
“Put them on,” Jesper said. You and Kaz both glanced at him once more, meeting each others eye thereafter, grinning and shaking your heads. It’d become very clear to you that the twenty four year old who you’d recruited to officiate your wedding was damn near close to letting out an excited squeal.
Kaz put the ring onto your ring finger and you did the same for him, waiting for Jespers next words as you took a half a step closer to Kaz.
“Kiss, you idiots!” Jesper said. Kaz laughed, pulling you close and pressing a kiss to your forehead.
He’d kiss you like nothing else later in the evening, when the only thing to bug you was a lamp that you’d left on, but you both agreed that a forehead kiss would be as far as you’d go in front of others. Kisses, to Kaz, were personal, and you respected and loved that about him.
“Saints, bless this fuckin’ union!” Jesper shouted. You glanced at Alina, who shot you a thumbs up and a nod as the party part of the wedding kicked off.
Terrowin and Kira were the first people that you and Kaz talked to.
“Did you secure it?” He asked.
“The property?” Terrowin was a Zemeni boy, with skin dark as night and eyes as warm as the sun.
“Or the trip?” Asked Kira, a girl from Shu Han with hair black as the feathers on a crow and blue eyes as cold as the Fjerdan ice.
“The property, first and foremost,” he said. “Did you get it? Did you give it the name I asked you to?”
“Yes, and yes,” said Terrowin. “Beside The Silver Six is a bookstore called Page Eighty-Three. It’s scheduled to open in the fall.” Your eyes widened as you made the connection.
“Page eighty-three?” You asked, smirk on your lips. Kaz shrugged.
“And the request?”
“The line from the poem will be put on the wall behind the clerks counter,” Kira said. “Just as you requested.”
“And the trip?”
“Your boat for Novyi Zem leaves in two days, Boss,” Kira said. “Two bells in the afternoon. It’s directly routed to Coftons docks.” Kaz nodded.
“Thank you,” he said. “We’ll see you when Page Eighty-Three opens.”
“Damn right we will,” you said. Terrowin and Kira laughed as they walked away.
You glanced around the room, spotting Jesper and Wylan perched at a piano, playing the music that everyone was dancing to. Marya and Colm dancing close to them. Nina and Zoya dancing like idiots and laughing throughout. Mal and Inej making conversation and Genya and Alina heading your way.
“Congrats, you two,” Genya said. “Can I expect to see you both tanned and rested up when you get back from Novyi Zem?”
“You’ll be in Ketterdam?” You asked. Genya nodded.
“For a couple of months, to make sure that your Jesper friend doesn’t colossally fuck things up while your friend Inej is doing her thing on the open ocean,” Alina said. “I’m there to visit for a bit, under the radar.”
“Thank you, Alina,” he said. “Thank you both. For everything that you’ve done in these past years.”
“No biggie, Brekker,” Alina said. “I don’t know you that well, but I see how happy you make Y/N, and he’s like a little brother. I care about his happiness.”
“You two are absolutely bloody adorable,” Genya said. “Now, back to my question, will you be tan, or at the very least, well rested, upon your return?”
“Kaz is pale,” you said. “He’ll burn like a crisp. Me? I don’t really know. I guess it depends.”
“We’ll be well rested,” Kaz said. “He’s a darkling. He can create shadow. I fully intend to use that to keep the sun out in the mornings.”
“I won’t do whatever you ask of me!” You quipped.
“You had no issue with that last night,” he said, raising a teasing eyebrow. “Or this morning!”
“Mal was right!” Alina shouted, her and Genya bursting into giggles. “Damn it, I hate it when that happens!” You laughed.
You took another glance around you, spotting your friends.
No, wait. Scratch that.
Not your friends.
Your family.
Your family was having a good time, eating, talking, dancing, laughing. They were enjoying themselves and congratulating you as you talked to Alina and Genya.
Kaz had an arm around your waist, his cheek pressed against the side of your head as his other hand gently turned your wedding ring around on your finger. He was talking to people without arguing with them. He was holding you like you were the only thing that mattered to him.
Your life was perfect.
Kaz was yours, you were his, and your life was full.

Inej x fem! Brekker! Reader - Captains? Part 2/?
A/n: So I finally did this... The next one is a Kaz request it was supposed to be up a loooong time ago but I got other ideas so... That will be up next!
Warnings: the Menagerie is mentioned, abuse, sexual abuse, some angst, fluff, bad writing, language, mentions of homophobia I think that’s it? You have been warned!
Summary: Right where we left of from the last one! If you haven't read part 1 this won't make sense!
All rights go to Leigh Bardugo and you, I just own the plot!
Kaz and I embrace and we let go and I study his face.
"You really are gaining more scars little one." I tease, and there's a faint blush that covers the top of Kaz's cheeks.
"You didn't say Kaz was your brother!" Inej exclaims. I laugh at her and the rest of the crows opened mouth faces.
"We didn't want to talk about who your friends were and who my is brother because of our enemies. However I was suspecting that you and Kaz had dated each other because you said he was the crow king?" I raise my eyebrows at her and she flushes a bit.
I roll my eyes. "Don't worry, I don't care that you dated my brother Inej that's not going to change anything between us."
Kaz raise's his eyebrow at the 'that's not going to change anything between us comment' but seems to leave it at a raised eyebrow.
"At least there's less people to get introduced to?" The Zemeni (tries to anyways) joke.
Inej just nods and her eyes light up, she takes my hand and pulls me towards her and starts introducing me to everyone else.
"That one right there is Wylan." She points to the boy who looks about twelve but is probably sixteen.
"The one right next to him is Wylan's boyfriend Jesper." She shifts her hand a little too point at the brown eyed, very tall boy.
They both seem uncomfortable with the way Inej introduced them (well mostly just the shorter one - Wylan but Jesper seemed more over protective then anything). Probably just not being used to people being very nice to them because their relationship, but they do look like they were made for each. I give them a small nod in response.
"This one right there is our waffle lover, Nina." She points to the girl with ruby red hair.
"And then that one right their is Matthias." She points to the guy that looks like a big chunk of ice. Literally.
I nod at them all, I take Inej's hand and give it a small squeeze before letting it go quickly.
"So who's up for some waffles?" Nina chirps happily starting to bounce over to the nearest waffle house.
I shot a small smile over to Inej and I go to walk by Kaz, she just nods her head in understanding and goes by Nina.
I walk in step with my brother (even if he does have a cane) silence blooms over the two of us but it isn't uncomfortable. We Brekkers seem to have the famous comfortable silence, and it's honest to the saints fucking amazing.
"So Pekka came back, to the barrel?" I whisper lowly but I make it look like we're not talking at all.
Kaz just nods in response and a flash of anger, and vengeance comes across is face but it's gone in a second. Kaz had always been the one that couldn't always control his emotions when we got captured by the random band of assassins. So he always ended up just pushing them down, you still have to use your emotions but Kaz shows too much so he just push's them down.
"I know where his kid is." I whisper even lower now and all the people around us couldn't possibly hear it but Kaz could.
"Y/n..." He trails off trying to warn me.
I just shrug my shoulders, "It would be good bait plus we can always kill him in the end."
Kaz shakes his head, "Who would we kill Pekka or the kid?" It's a question of morals, I know it is. I have always struggled with morals even as a kid. If the world seems to hate you why do they matter?
So I look Kaz straight in the eyes and the words that leave my mouth seem to concern Kaz even more then he was.
"Both."
We reach the waffle house and I drink in the scent of beautiful waffles and I go to sit by Inej.
"So what were you and Kaz talking about?" She asks and I laugh internally a bit. Once the Wraith always the Wraith.
Okay, so I could tell her that we were talking about killing Pekka's kid, but...
"Revenge." Is all I say and she nods her head.
"Just don't get to caught up in that web okay? When you do, it could leave you down a bad path." Ah there it is, the wise Inej words that I really should take into my life. Yet here we are.
I giggle and kiss her on the cheek. "If that path leads me away from you I don't think it's worth it."
She opens her mouth to say something else untill I hear a ginormous explosion interrupting her and I quickly turn around and pull out my knives only to see a giant gaping hole in the wall and guess who's standing right in the center of it?
Kaz and I's fucking assassin trainer that kidnapped us.
Why the fuck did I come back to Ketterdam?

It's the four year yahrzeit for my stepfather (for the gentiles, anniversary of his death) and it marks the moment that I started trundling back towards Judaism.
May his memory be a blessing, because his life sure as fuck wasn't.
My relationship with my family had been strained for a good long while in large part due to him. I moved out of the house when I was sixteen because he was awful and abusive and made literally every part of life much harder. I cut off contact with my family for years and when I started talking to them again, I set clear boundaries about what I would and would not tolerate. As an adult, I could do what I could never do as a child: I could just leave.
But he died four years ago and my mother, who I love, called me, so I got in the car immediately to go be with her. I packed and sorted and threw out so many of his things, and in the weeks and months that followed, I discovered that grieving your abuser is not like grieving someone you just loved. Grief is a nonlinear process and when your feelings about someone are not just complicated, but involve love and fear and desire for approval and rebellion... I discovered that I wasn't just grieving a person, I was grieving an idea of what that relationship could have been. I was grieving for the loss of hope that our relationship could be something else, even though it was impossible.
I'm writing a fanfic about Wylan grieving his abusive father and everything that is ugly and complicated about that. I don't generally identify with Wylan as a character, but fuck if I don't know a lot about complicated grief. I don't know if anything will come of it, but the words my mother said when describing her own grief have stuck with me: "He was awful, but he was mine."

october was a wonderful reading month for me. with 23 books (i did read for 24h straight on halloween) and over 6,000 pages read, it would be an understatement to say that i'm pleased. i'll try to keep this as short and to the point as i can. thank you for stopping by to read this!

2. spy x family vol 1 and 2 by Tatsuya Endo
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (both 1 and 2)
absolutely loved these two! it was a buddy read in a discord server and boy was this good. it is a dramatic comedy of a family which follows a tsundere spy father, a hitman mother and an esper kid and the kid is basically the only one knowing about the other two's occupation. hilarious manga and i can't wait to continue reading this!!
3. komi can't communicate vol 1 and 2 by Tomohito Oda
rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (vol 1) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (vol 2)
rhbdnepifk 8 books here are mangas rbjdskwe but this was also a buddy read and i really enjoyed this. the chapters were a little too long for my liking but overall, a sweet and cute read!
4. ace of spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
this was the book club pick for sept for the crusty book club! you can find the review here. i will never be able to put all my thoughts into coherent sentences rjfsdnlc. 5 stars it was!
5. with the fire on high by elizabeth acevedo

so this book follows a teen mom in high school who has a passion for cooking and aspires to be a chef. the audiobook is fantastic ! it is narrated by the author herself and it's just *chef's kiss* this was my first book from this author and i will be checking out the others soon! (also i heard that the author narrates almost all her books so 👀)
6. the black veins by ashia monet
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
this was the book club pick for the vintage books and wine book club. i, for one, DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS BOOK ISN'T TALKED ABOUT MORE. this book, is so good. like so gooooooodd !!
i need everyone to pick this up asap and fall in love with the found family aspect like 🛐 please.
this is book is about blythe, a sixteen year old guardian out of the 7 guardians. it is magical realism, found family trope, absolutely fucking loveable characters. i am adopting caspian and antonio (yes wylan, you're getting sibs). i cannot wait to discuss this book and omg pls just read it okay?
7. how we fall apart by katie zhao
rating: ⭐⭐
sigh this book was one of my most anticipated releases of 2021. the premise sounded so good. but it, unfortunately, did not work out for me. listen, it started off great-- the setting is slightly disturbing like you know something is off but you can't put your finger on it sorta vibes but as it continued it was-- no.
the "plot twist" at the end? i like to predict while reading mystery/thrillers and this was the kinda plot twist with like the culprit being the twin we never know existed and stuff (not a spoiler, just an example) like there was no freaking way the reader could have even thought that that person was the culprit. the characters were just flat.
i wish this book had been longer and the motives of the 4 were explored more but to conclude: this book wasn't it for me but if it intrigues you, maybe give it a try!
8. the atlas six by olivie blake
rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5
im just going to paste my goodreads review here cause it's past 12am and im tired ---
this was a buddy read (•ᴗ•) woohooo !! i have mixed feelings about this book. i definitely think i would like it more if i were to reread it. the very last portion of the book, i did not understand very well. there was so many things told to the reader that i was just like "huh" all the characters were fascinating to read about. i, obviously, had a fav and a least fav within the povs and characters. Libby and reina were my favs and Callum (oh Callum) was my least favorite the pacing was odd-- it did get better towards the end but still... odd. the philosophical theories and thoughts got pretty repetitive and it kinda made everything weird...? when i was reading it, it was kinda annoying how many times i would think about how much i would have enjoyed this book more if it had an editor. there were some things that didn't make sense. minor spoilers ahead for ex: there's a chapter in libby's pov and it ends with "tristan didn't move until after she was gone". how? how do we know that? that tristan didn't move after she was gone if we're reading from libby's pov? i really liked how the romance wasn't obvious. i was shipping two characters in the beginning and towards the end, i was shipping the same two characters with different people? if that makes any sense. the magic system.... is vague. i was--still am confused about how it works? i wish stuff had been described better. that brings me to: i heard this author's books are going to be published through v.e schwab's publishing company(?) and i'm looking forward to the edited version of her books. the book tries to be intelligent. and i can't say it actually ends up being intelligent. again, i wish stuff was described better. haha now i'm being repetitive--ironic.
im just gonna leave this here and might come back in the morning to edit this haha.
meme break: (more like pun break but oh well xD)

8. everything i never told you by celeste ng
this was a dnf so pretty bummed about that :/ i just wish tws and cws were properly mentioned. dnf at 50% please read all the tws before starting this here i started this on a whim just because i had heard a lot of things about it and while i did check the tws, the website i used did not mention one that i'm often bothered by and... that did not end well.
9. everyone's an aliebn when ur an aliebn too by jomny sun
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
this is such a cute read!! i don't have a lot of things to say but i enjoyed it a lot [><]b
10. if we were villains by m.l rio
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
this was the book club pick for the late night book club! this is eerie atmosphere + shakespeare + complicated relationships + murder. a perfect read for 2 am (i totally did not read it all through the night). this book follows our main character right after he is out of the prison and is met with the police officer who is super curious to know who exactly committed the murder and claims to know that our mc covered it up. and so, our theatre actor of an mc narrates the story in the form of a play. there are acts and scenes and a shit ton of shakespeare references.
an absolute classic, i'd argue, which fits perfectly into the dark academia category. i devoured this book in 7 or so hours and yes, it was read during the readathon xD. the pacing was a bit odd at times and i wish all the characters were shed light on equally but other than that, this book is amazing. i did figure out who would be killed and who killed them but the ride was so enjoyable, i had to give it a 4 star.
11. fangs by sarah andersen
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
my god this is such a cute graphic novel?! i read on tapas and you can find that here. it is about a vampire who falls in love with a werewolf and just follows bits and pieces of their lives and it was the cutest things i've ever read.
12. a house in the cerulean sea by t.j clune
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
this was supposed to be the book club read for the late night book club for the month of may but then the controversy happened and the liveshow was cancelled and the very bored, stuck on page 160 self put it down. i picked it up again in oct because i needed a physical book to read in school and because i read most of my books in their digital form, this was literally my only hope erdbg. i started enjoying it a lot more and sorta realised that i wasn't really in the mood for fantasy read back then haha. it was cute and fun while it lasted and maybe i'll pick up his other book. idk
13. a dowry of blood by s.t. gibson
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
LOVED THIS!! this is a retelling of dracula's wives and polyamorous and queer and just a-may-zing. our main character is unnamed and is referred to by the name her love interest aka dracula gave her and it is like addressed? in a way? to dracula himself. i read the audiobook. highly recommend. ALSO IT IS A NOVELLA SO HOW THE FUCK WAS SO MUCH FIT IN THERE IDK.
14. sheets by Brenna Thummler
rating: ⭐⭐⭐
it was cute. might pick up the next one but idk. art style is stunning tho.
15. the love hypothesis by ali hazelwood
rating: A WHOPPING 5 STARS WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT ME TO RATE THIS SHIT??
IM NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO PUT THE SYNOPSIS INTO COHERENT WORDS BUT JUST READ THIS SHIT OH MY FUCKING GOD IT MADE ME SCREAM OUT LOUD LIKE A CRAZY PERSON AT 11:30 PM CAUSE I HAD TO FINISH THIS FOR A READATHON.
---

Chapter Sixteen: My Dearest Jailbird
Good morning, Sunshine!
If you are reading this, you are probably waking up alone and wondering where you are and how you got there. And your assumptions are correct – Wylan and I are indeed criminal masterminds who’ve drugged you and kidnapped you and sold you to the Shu. Now all of your suits are mine!
Yes, I’m joking. Don’t kill me. In all of this mess, the one thing I’ve found amusing is thinking of how this must all be playing out from your perspective. You take a dog for a walk, you fall asleep on my couch, you wake up surrounded by Shu. Sorry about that. The real truth is you were poisoned, pretty badly. Inej says the Shu have the best hospitals and mediks – you’re in Bhez Ju. And before you start complaining, we paid a lot of money to convince them to take you, so keep the whining to a minimum.
I know your Shu’s a little rusty, but Wylan is with you. His Shu is also rusty, but between the two of you, hopefully you’ll manage all right. As soon as you’ve got a clean bill of health (just physically speaking – no one’s assessing your laundry list of mental problems, don’t worry), Specht is prepared to bring you home.
That’s the where of it all with a bit of the why. I imagine you have a lot more questions. Why were you poisoned, for example? Great question, Kaz. I think it’s because you stabbed a twelve-year-old. Can you not do that again, please? It really pissed him off, and some old enemies happened to catch wind of it and then we had to fight them. Which enemies, you ask? Yes, with you, this statement does require some clarification; there are so many. The Haskells, Kaz. I know, your favorites.
They tried to seize control of the Dregs, but they had kind of banked on you dying. Thank the Saints you’re stubborn in that department. Inej came back and handled it. Oh, you want to know how? I’ll tell you how, but if you’re going to be gross about how amazing she was, do it in private, all right?
Right. Let me set the scene. It was early morning in the warehouse district, sun coming up over the harbor. We hadn’t slept in days. We’d whisked you to the coast to meet Specht just the morning prior, before sunrise. We’d pressured Wylan to go, too – it was unpleasant. There may have been tears. (Not mine, let’s get that on the record right now.) And then Inej was orchestrating a massive takedown. Anika was delivering missives while pretending to look loyal to Haskell. (Whatever you’re paying her, it’s not enough.) The crew of the Wraith was assembling. Pistols, knives, explosives. We were all ready for the showdown of the decade.
(For you, Brekker. I hope you’re picking up on this. You may be a bastard, but you’re our bastard. No one else is allowed to poison you but us.)
Inej had brokered terms with Haskell, and they had agreed to meet in the warehouse district. Haskell wanted a gentlemen’s duel – pistols at dawn -- which was downright laughable given the cheating tactics he’d already shown willing to employ. But Inej was eager to make a show of his humiliation for any remaining holdouts.
I was nervous, I’ll admit. Guns and bullets are my thing. I was not happy that she was acquiescing to Haskell’s wishes – she’s meant for knives. I’m learning, though, as I’m sure you are, that second-guessing Inej is a waste of energy.
And she assured me it wouldn’t matter whether she won or lost, not with the attack she was strategizing with her crew. She and Anika were working out how to use them to take out every one of Haskell’s snipers without word getting back to him. You know, the sneaky things Inej does best.
So, the morning of the duel arrives. Haskell and five of his associates stride in to the warehouse district, armed to the teeth in pistols and grenades. It feels very much my last morning in the world, and if Inej feels the same way, she doesn’t look it. She’s sharpened all of her knives all night until they’re practically mirrors, hidden away in all of her limbs, and I loaned her one of my pistols (I think I cried over that).
Rhett Haskell made some bloviating demands about how we were to hand you over when we lost, because of course he was unaware that you were already halfway to Shu Han, but that’s beside the point. Inej told him to shut up and name his second. They met in the middle of the street, back to back, and began their paces. I began counting them down.
This is when shit started to hit the proverbial fan.
Haskell had no intention of abiding by the rules and turned at the count of eight.
Inej anticipated, but Haskell had already drawn.
Anika was watching it all and gave the command. Inej leapt left, Haskell’s bullet singing past her face. She springs the quick release on the bone-handled knife you gave her.
And then the rest of the Dregs start pouring in at Anika’s orders just as Inej’s knife handle is sticking out of Rhett Haskell’s throat. They’re moving in to take out the rest of Haskell’s men.
Then in that same goddamn minute – The Stadwatch roll in. Rifles, batons, handcuffs, smoke grenades. They’re coming in with wagons and shields, rounding up anyone they can get their hands on, carting them off. It was Haskell’s last trick. He’d tipped them off. If he couldn’t have the Dregs, no one would.
Where was I in all of this? That’s a good question. Inej had named me her second. For a moment, I thought she’d been shot when I saw her go down to dodge the bullet, and I ran at her. I was aiming at anyone who’d get too close, and then, when she pulled herself up and I saw she was all right, we were back-to-back to fight our way out, pistols and knives at the ready.
But then, the Stadwatch. Kaz, you’ve got to believe that I was prepared to do whatever it took to get her out of there. If she wasn’t so heavily armed, I’d have even thrown her over my shoulder like a sack of potatoes, but she most definitely would have stabbed me if I’d tried. When the Stadwatch rolled in, she told me to run. It happened so fast, Kaz. She said I was the one who could arrange to have you cared for, arrange for the payments and such. She said I had to go. She fucking hit me in the face, Kaz, like really hard. So, I did what I was told.
So, that is both the good news and the bad news. And the infinitely worse bad news. The good news is the Haskells no longer maintain hold over the Dregs. The bad news, of course, is that the majority of the Dregs are in the custody of the Stadwatch. And the worst of it is that that number includes Inej. She will stand before a judge next month, who will almost definitely sentence her to Hellgate.
But don’t panic! We have time. You can write her; I visit her regularly with the solicitor I’ve procured for her case. And it’s just Stadhall right now. If you’re reading this, you’re awake, and you can help me figure out how to break her out. That’s a cake walk for you. Don’t panic. We have been in worse scrapes than this.
Do try to keep things light when you write her, though, all right? What happened to you hit her pretty hard. It’s been difficult to watch.
And, for Saint’s sake, thank Wylan for me. Daily. He doesn’t say it, but I know he’s furious.
Best wishes,
J. Fahey
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My dearest Inej, most cherished jailbird in all of Ketterdam,
First things first, I’m all right. Probably infinitely better than you, actually. I can move all ten fingers and toes and speak in complete sentences, and I’ve never been so patronized in my life for such menial accomplishments. At least I think that’s what these Shu mediks are doing when I do something they want. It sounds very patronizing, anyway.
I won’t bore you with too many details, which could easily be done, because it’s very boring here. The food is bizarre and horrible. I’m forced to walk laps around the ward at least three times a day, no matter how badly my leg hurts, but I’m proud to report I’ve not strangled a single nurse, even though I’ve really wanted to. Wylan has even said I can tell you that I’m a “model patient” – although I did glare at him rather heavily to get him to agree to do so. You can let Jesper know we're getting on all right. He enjoys my card tricks the most out of any of you, so if I can't be stuck with you, at least it's him.
All of this is, of course, thanks to you. I’m caught up on the letters, and I can hardly believe it all. I owe you far more than a debt of gratitude. I owe you my life. I owe you an entire city. I owe you everything.
Which, of course, brings me to your predicament. I’m working on it. I have said I would come for you, and I have always meant it. I will, love, just as soon as I can manage it. I am spending every waking second until then scheming what needs to be schemed to get you out of this.
In the meantime, have you tried not getting caught? That usually works for me.
With love and with gratitude and with every bit of strength I have,
I’m yours,
K. Brekker
P.S. – And, for gods’ sake, tell Jesper to stop telling me not to panic. It’s literally the most panic-inducing thing a person can say, and the nurses keep saying it's bad for my constitution.
P.P.S. - What happened to Artie Galligan in all of this? Or is the answer to that question bad for my constitution as well?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zenik,
I had to call in some favors to get this to you. Don't ask, but you are allowed to be impressed. I need your help.
-Brekker

More from six of crows reread...
The first Matthias chapter gives me so many feelings. He’s such an amazing character I love him <3
His love for his home and his country... his sense of honour... how bad he feels about betraying his country... the dregs finding his Fjerdan ways ridiculous... him calling them all horrible and Nina a witch... everything he’s been through in hellgate... his anger with Nina... how he really wants to kill her but really wants to fuck her too... his attraction to her is just major and I love how he’s been having sex dreams about her... their relationship is the one most full of sexual desire from the beginning
- honestly I just love this whole scene and can not wait to see it on screen! Wylan being introduced <3 him asking who mark is <3 also I wonder if he really is sixteen? Matthias doesn’t reckon he can be any more than fifteen :/ is Wylan lying about his age? Possibly. Also we get “scheming face” ...

one of my favourite underrated things about six of crows is how every single time matthias meets someone he has to take a moment to process how young they are and that he’s the Oldest out of all of them and he does it with every other one of the dregs it’s so funny
