I'm stumped at how many mdzs fans still "self-righteously analyzed and judged" Wei Wuxian as morally gray. When the author of MDZS herself has stamped WWX as someone worthy to be seen as an example in character/disposition.

Hi again! I come bearing a set of... more detailed-answer-requiring questions...which I'll send in different asks so... first question:

We know that LWJ used to believe in the gentry, cultivation clans, hierarchy, rules, orthodoxy etc. Like he expected them to do their jobs and justice to be served and everything which is how I am justifying his pre-resurrection treatment of WWX. But I do think he went through a massive perspective shift when his own clan elders turns their weapons at him and a barely-sane (at that moment) man and then it got cemented by his own punishment and the siege led on the burial mounds after the promise JGS made that caused WQ to offer herself. So my question is, am I just seeing it or did he really stop believing in justice and clans and their bullshit to be anything but self-serving and began making his own way in the world after. Like I know he's strong and all but I dont remember him ever asking for backup from his clan, no matter what and I feel like that kinda reflected on how they had broken his trust so wholly and irrevocably? Thoughts?

Whoa there, actually, we do not all agree that Lan Wangji used to believe in any of those things. Just like the plot-twist about Wei Wuxian's character is that he wasn't some evil demon corrupted by power, Lan Wangji's character plot-twist is that he was never as wedded to the rules as we are led to believe at the beginning. He has no problems going against his clan when he feels it necessary, in situations as big as his mother's death and the Nightless City bloodbath and as small as choosing to keep and raise the rabbits that Wei Wuxian gifted him. Neither fighting his elders nor his subsequent punishment were the beginnings of this idea for him as he's been doing this since he was six. As for his "loyalty" to the orthodoxy: Lan Wangji doesn't care about the orthodoxy so much as he cares that Wei Wuxian has reappeared after a 3-month disappearance, looking emaciated and hardened and using a completely new cultivation style that leaves mass death in its wake. He cares about Wei Wuxian using the ghost path because he assumes it is the reason why Wei Wuxian has taken this sharp 180 in personality. He and we learn that it is not.

My answer to the other ask is that people in the English-speaking fandom, particularly those from Western nations like the United States, are so attached to their usual literary archetypes that they fail to consider that a story from a completely different culture would have different literary archetypes. Wangxian's love is not "I will burn the world down for you." That is a Western take on romance. Wangxian's love is "I will support you at your side, always," and the story is built around that. Lan Wangji saved a catatonic Wei Wuxian from the Nightless City bloodbath and protected him against his own clan. Lan Wangji took in the child that Wei Wuxian and the Wen remnants raised and hid to save. Lan Wangji stands with Wei Wuxian publicly after the "Mo Xuanyu" reveal and during the second siege. When Wei Wuxian is resurrected, he follows the other man's lead and only moves to cover the other man's blind spots. Why does Lan Wangji do all this? Because they are on the same team.

I'm willing to at least hear out most of the "xyz plot point is heavily tied to abc cultural context" brands of posts but the "wwx isn't meant to be read as morally gray" and "the western fandom made up Sizhui being wangxian's son" brands of post make me feel like my cultural ignorance is being used to gaslight me

ok so your first problem was assuming mdzs is a story where Good People are Rewarded and Bad People are Punished.

your second problem was assuming that MXTX—who goes out of her way to showcase unresolved, tragic, undeserved endings in all of her works—would ever write a story with such a shallow notion of “deserving.”

the only reason wangxian makes it out unscathed is because they’re literally the protagonists. authorial intent and plot armor ensure their happy ending. that’s it.

I really hate when some danmei fans treat the main couple as infallible and completely morally correct when more often than not analyzing the way their morality grays helps you understand the main couple's characterizations and dynamics better. Take WWX and LWJ for example. Neither of them are in the complete moral right because no one in that book is. Society is nuanced. WWX was in the wrong for disregarding many of his responsibilities throughout the novel, but he was also in the right for rescuing the Wen. LWJ was in the right for defending WWX and LSZ, but he was in the wrong for blindly reaching for WWX and often antagonizing everyone else. You can't truly like or understand a character without acknowledging that they are flawed and in fact not in a moral pedestal within the book. You can't call WWX justified for breaking ties with JC without also acknowledging JC was justified in being upset with WWX. The main couples in these novels are not infallible and it's honestly extremely annoying to see some fans bash side characters for their dubious morality (cough cough Mu Qing, Jiang Cheng, Qi Rong, etc) while also putting their favorite main couple on an untouchable moral superiority.

I love Wei Wuxian very much, but he IS morally gray in some ways. I don’t understand why some people take that as an incredible insult that they can’t have said. He is always working from a place of good intentions! He’s a good person! He is also sometimes morally gray. For one; the difference between the ghost path and demon path are negligible. What WWX does is still considered taboo and messed up within the Taoist culture because he’s disturbing graves and disrupting the cycle of reincarnation. Using resentment and corpses means they are taken out of the cycle and a chance of going through the afterlife and becoming reincarnated like they should be. He’s described as killing Wen soldiers (sometimes using torture), and then bringing them back as puppets and using them to kill their own friends and family. All of the characters in the story are flawed, and I wouldn’t even call WWX’s morals one of his flaws (again, he means well! He’s trying to do the right thing! He’s a good man doing his best! Morality itself isn’t a character flaw exactly, I would say some of his big ones are his insistence on doing everything himself and his habit of deciding that he knows the best path and because of that going after it whether the people involved are okay with it or not), but I feel like the way I see people react to any questioning of his cultivation style or methods of dealing with certain events is a little weird. He thoroughly enjoyed doing torture! This is fun and I love it! It’s a little morally gray tho.

also we never seeh him directly go after anyone who wasnt wang liangjiao, wen chao or wen zhuiliu. the rest of the wens were just collateral - god forbid a soldier kill people during a war huh ? (also the wens were just objectively horrible. like the rest of the sects) and yeah the others terrified to death, but wwx was just using the tools he had at his disposal, and also do u think getting run through with a sword and left to bleed out is a much better death.

Hi Jackie! Have you read The Untamed books? If so, did you like them? I’ve loved the drama so much but I tried reading the Seven Seas translation of the novels and I just can’t get into the story although I know I love it :( If you’ve read the novels, how much depths does they add to the characters and the story (if they do)? You know, you would probably get a different answer depending on whether the person prefers the novel or the live action. Me? I prefer the live action. I did read the novels and liked them, but to me and I don't know if this take is unpopular or not, the novel and the live action are telling two different stories.

To answer your questions, I think there's definitely more to Wei Wuxian's character in the novel! I like how clear it is that he's a morally gray character because the drama did wash away a bit of that, but also... it was XZ so I forgive them. If you like wangxian, you'll definitely enjoy the novel. I like wangxian, but I'm here for WWX/JC and the Yunmeng trio, and the live action delivered on that. I don't even remember what Jiang Yanli does in the novel except dying, so the live action will get my love for giving her a bit more story. Same with Wen Qing.

The world building is better in the novels and for that alone I would suggest to keep reading them, but also if you don't that's fine. You don't have to like them, so don't feel :( about it. You won't be less of a fan. You can try the donghua if you haven't and then try the novels again if you feel up to it. Have you watched mdzs q? I don't think that one adds more to the story lol but it's cute!

Nie Huaisang is not Jin Guangyao 2.0

MXTX leaves him in very morally gray territory, I'll give it to you, but it isn't because of his revenge arc-- it's because he got to the revenge dishonestly and involved folks without their consent.

Now, that being said, there's a reason he's not totally reprehensible, too: Nie Huaisang (like Wei Wuxian) uses the resentment of Jin Guangyao's victims to take him down. He learned it from Wei Wuxian back in the Cloud Recesses lectures. That's why his reaction is included after Lan Qiren blows a public gasket.

Just because Nie Huaisang didn't use the ghost path to do it doesn't mean we should get it twisted. He demonstrates a great deal of respect for Wei Wuxian (bordering on reverance), and while we don't know the circumstances of his connection with MXY, it is odd that someone so victimized by Jin Guangyao would go so far to bring back one of the people who terrified him (and JGY very directly victimized) while a NMJs hand is running around in the background. Like it couldn't happen that way without consent or an agreement of some sort.

He isn't the other side of the JGY coin, he isn't JGYs replacement. He is a mirror (mdzs is very literally a novel of mirrors) of both WWX and JGY. He believes he is doing the right thing (and he is) and he's going to use resources wisely to do it. Better if folks are consenting, but... dead people can't consent and there's no good way to learn your husband offed your kid and lied about being your brother, so.....

I saw someone complain that Wei Wuxian is "too perfect" and that mxtx didn't allow him to make mistakes. And I think that there's nothing wrong with liking more flawed or morally gray characters. If it's your preference, well, you have the whole cultivation world to stan.

BUT if you think Wwx being morally good is bad writing then you missed the point of the entire book.

Ouch. If there's anything WWX can sympathize with...

This line is clearly drawing a parallel between XXC trying to "save the world" (help people selflessly) and WWX—who, we read later, tried to "save the world" with the Wen. Both of them bite off more than they can chew, both of them end up hurting bystanders, and both of them eventually get fucked over.

And in both cases, it causes strife with their partner, and they're left with little support. Pain and grief make SZC outright reject XXC; LWJ rejects WWX out of a mix of property and concern for his health.

For SZC, there's a nail in the coffin: when they reunite, he once again turns away from XXC, confronting XY instead of turning the other way and reconnecting with XXC. He doesn't bend his morals: his solution to the complicated problem of XXC living with the enemy and accidentally murdering bystanders is XXC must never know.

LWJ? In the years since WWX's death, he's developed a sense of morality that allows for gray areas and mistakes. He's learned to bend. He realized his past actions only pushed WWX away and left him vulnerable. And he chooses to stick to his partner like glue. (And to communicate... as best as he can, which isn't very well.)

Nie Huaisang gave a heavy sigh. None of it excused the things Jin Guangyao had done. None of it would make him forgive his brother’s death. But did it have to be that way? This was a child. A child who was crying in the night, on the cold stone he had as a bed, because someone he looked up to had hurt him. How could he blame him for what he had become? How could he say that this boy deserved death? Who was he to make that judgment? Could he save both his brothers? Or: Nie Huaisang accidentally adopts a bunch of chaos gremlins.

Mojo's comments: I am such a sucker for a pied piper of hard-luck orphans. In this case, it's Nie Huaisang, who is such a funny caretaker, he kind of reminds me of the Dread Pirate Roberts, ya know -- 'Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning.' -- except in a less explicit and more paternal way. Heh. So, his moral compass is very gray, but his actions show a heart of gold, and the kids are very clear on which one speaks the loudest. The first one he picks up is Meng Yao, around the age of 7, then Wei Ying, then Xue Yang (who is a bitey, hilarious, feral cat) and lastly, Mo Yue (not yet, and never Xuanyu, since nhs stole his name back in the beginning of this adventure). So in one way, this story is the Chinese xianxia's answer to Louisa May Alcott's Little Men, except with a time travelling single dad. So nhs wanders around the edges of the cultivators' world, claiming to be a disciple of Baoshan Sanren, hanging out with different sects to get his boys some training (and maybe learn some secrets) and periodically, maybe, slaying a sect leader on the down low. It's magnificent.

Excerpt: Nie Huaisang took a deep breath and thought about screaming, or crying, or throwing both of these brats in a river. “My brother was a good man. He was just and righteous. And he was murdered by someone he thought was a friend because he stood in the way of that person gaining power. My friend who made the talismans lost everyone he loved and threw himself off a cliff because he tried to stand up to the people in power and they destroyed him. I will not - I will not - watch that happen to anyone else I care about. Do you understand?” “I understand,” Meng Yao said, and leaned against him. Ridiculous, Nie Huaisang thought, and wanted to scream even louder. His brother’s murderer trying to comfort him. Jin Guangyao hadn’t killed Wei Wuxian, and hadn’t even been wholly responsible for his death, but he had certainly played a key part in it. Now this child had the audacity to try to console him, as if he was an entirely different person. Because he was.

Difference is, when we criticise wwx, it's never done out of hate for the character and his fans. Neither do we go directly to wngxn posts to shit on the main ship.

All our criticisms are fair because wwx did make mistakes. He is morally gray. A morally upright person would not raise the dead out, knowingly tear their souls out of rhe reincarnation cycle and brutally torture people in the name of vengeance.

As valid as he was for all that, it doesn't make him morally pure. Remember, lwj himself was horrified by what wwx had done initially and what he was becoming.

Those are valid criticisms of a character, as opposed to the made up, over exaggerated fanon bs you all make about jc.

You all want jc fans to be the problematic bullies so bad when it's not us jumping on people's fanfics, appreciation posts and hcs, and dragging people's name through the mud, is it? *glances towards the more recent Twitter drama*

Also, there is just so much wrong with all these takes op made, which makes it so clear to me that they only read the book from wwx's pov....

Implying jc spat on wq and wn's help when he did try to speak up for them in the conference.... Implying that he never loved wwx unconditionally despite willingly putting his life on the line for him numerous times.... Fuck out of here!
