Please Destroy The Internet by Michael Sweater (Silver Sprocket)

A short and funny collection of one page comics, many referencing the terribleness of the internet, miscommunications, the fickle nature of the creative process, and/or werewolves.

Writing The Other: A Practical Approach by Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward (Aqueduct Press)

I've been hearing about this guide to writing characters outside your own lived experience for years, and as someone who wants to include rich diverse casts in my stories, I thought I should check it out! This book was published in 2005, and I think the conversations about own voices and diversity in the publishing world have developed quite a lot since then. I did find the first half of the book a bit dated. However, I loved the last essay in the book, "Appropriate Cultural Appropriation," specifically it's categorization of different writer's approaches to borrowing from other's cultures as Invaders, Tourists, or Guests. I'll be thinking about that metaphor for a long time, and trying my best to be a Guest as often as I can, and at worse a Tourist who pays for the directions and expertise I need to do a good job and not misrepresent cultures I didn't grow up with.

In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire and read by Cynthia Hopkins (Tordotcome)

My fourth read in the Wayward Children series. It's very interesting to me how Seanan McGuire keeps writing books in this series which the reader already knows the ending of, and how she maintains narrative tension when aiming towards a known ending. This one didn't hit quite as hard as Down Among the Sticks and Bones but I did enjoy seeing Lundy's life unfolding. The Goblin Market is a very magical and tempting setting, even if McGuire chose to skip over the biggest magical adventures Lundy had there and focus on the more mundane connective tissue of the going and coming from Earth. Honestly, part of why I keep reading these books is that they give me a lot of thoughts about writing, structuring a story, and what pieces of a tale you chose to tell- or not. 

Little Monarchs by Jonathan Case (Margaret Ferguson Books/Holiday House)

This is an ambitious sci-fi comic set in the near future, 50 years after a change in the sun's radiation killed all mammals on earth who lingered in the sun's rays. Small groups of humans managed to survive by hiding in basements, subways, tunnels, and caves and only venturing out at night. Now, 10 year old Elvie and her adopted guardian Flora travel the Pacific Coast trying to invent a cure. Flora has developed a medicine from the scales of monarch butterfly wings that keeps people temporarily safe, but it's not a final solution. They encounter various windfalls and dangers on the road- earthquakes, shipwrecks, a lost child, butterflies, enemies and allies. The art is dynamic and beautifully watercolored, but I got bogged down by the occasional dense text-heavy page, and overall the book took me a lot longer to read than comics usually do. But I still enjoyed it, especially recognizing the ravaged remains of classic west coast landmarks and Elvie's inventiveness and bravery. 

A Minor Chorus by Billy-Ray Belcourt (WW Norton Company)

I must be honest and say that this book was too literary for me, and that's on me, not the book. There were individual moments and lines that made me sit up and reach for a pen to underline, but the overall framing/voice of the book didn't work for me. However, if you are currently or have ever considered dropping out of a PhD program, returning to your small home town, and trying to process your entire community's grief and joy in one 150 page book, this one might just the read for you! 

The City We Became by NK Jemisin (Orbit)

This is my sixth NK Jemisin read, and while I enjoyed it a lot, it has a pretty different feel than her others, and didn't knock me over in quite the same way. Set in present day New York City, this book chronicles the first few days of the city awakening as a conscious entity and fighting the latest battle against an ancient and alien enemy that wants to prevent the birth of Earth city-beings. The story is fast paced and very easy to consume, and I had a good time reading it, even though I liked some of the six different POV characters more than others, and still don't feel like I fully understand the multi-verse conflict at the heart of the narrative. This book felt more cinematic and less literary than what I tend to expect from Jemisin, so if you've wanted to try one of hers but been intimidated by the dense world building of her fantasy, this might be a good one to start with. I will be very surprised if we don't see a film adaption of this series soon, as it feels almost written for the screen. 

And bonus, review of a Harper Collins book I read back in January and didn’t want to review until the strike was over:

The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer (Katherine Tagen books/HarperCollins)

Now that the HarperCollins strike is over, I can post my review of this book! The beginning of this book is a solid, but conventional, slow burn romance between two teens on a long term space mission responding to a distress call from a space station on one of the moons of Titan. The main character is Ambrose Cusk, the smart, handsome, privileged son of the Cusk corporation, which invented much of the technology on the spacecraft, including the AI operating system. The distress call is from his sister, Minerva, who like Ambrose graduated from the top of her class in the astronaut academy. But Ambrose wakes up aboard the Coordinated Endeavor with no memory of takeoff. Also, he learns he is not alone on the ship. A second young man, from a rival country, inhabits the second half of the ship, sealed away behind one central connecting door. Initially suspicious of each other, the two must begin working together as they discover more and more strange incongruencies on their craft. If this isn’t enough to whet your interest, the book throws out a huge twist at around the 40% mark, one that absolutely surprised and hooked me in for the rest of this wild journey. Queer, original, and a page turner.

M!Morgan! So why M!Morgan and not just Morgan? Because he's like one of the only supports where Owain isn't made fun of immediately or told to shut up (I mean even CHROM tells him to shut up, THE BETRAYAL I'm still mad at him HMPH), he's playing along right away and listening to Owain and, well, it helps the guy, really. F!Morgan on the other hand is... like pratically everyone else and I hated their supports, sorry (like, oh a support that is supposed to be romantic, let's make one of them mean to the other one, that's how m/f couples work! no).

Cynthia. One of those good supports for Owain, she's not mean to him, they're just having a fun banter about HEROICS!!!! Also they're very cute together ww.

Gérôme. They have no supports? Now they do. Becaus I said so. Also, come on, they would be so damn funny and good for each other, lbh. IDR tho, don't they have an interaction in one of the DLC? Yeah. That's enough for me.

Iñigo. Eternal Chastity. I MEAN, I didn't ship them before playing FATES, but then I started liking the pairing because their supports in Fates are actually good? Also the chemistry in that game between them? And, like my brain, so, why not in Awakening too? But as two brats trying to win over the other, but always failing because they're idiots! One of those ships happening years later for me, but in the making when they're young!

Finally being able to be Happy with his mom and dad.

Niles. I can't explain it, I Love It. They're amazing. Period. But, I can see both of them being good for the other, too, especially Niles, he needs the portable sun that is one Odain Dark (why did you choose that name, seriously).

Leo. Like I said in the Diamant ask, I have a weakness for the royal/retainer ship if one of them is Owain from another world!!! Also, Leo needs the rest and comfort his hyperactive retainer can give him, really.

Laslow. See above!!

Orochi. What can I say, funny and funky mages from two opposites kingdoms (who were at war), having the most chaotic supports until they become honest with each other! I like it. Owain could be himself around her because She Knows. And then she starts playing around with him, nice!

I still wish for him to be happy with his mom and dad and now his other half and Ophelia!!

20. A boss you think is really cool

Hmmm... that's an interesting one! I'm gonna answer with a few different bosses, bc 'cool' could mean a lot of different things

Cool design + concept: Blizzeta from Twilight Princess (her 2nd form also has what's probably my 2nd fave boss theme of all time)! I also like the in-story context for her boss battle so much! (spoilers for Twilight Princess) We know already that the mirror shards are a corrupting force, and earlier we see that the Goron Chief was corrupted by the Fused Shadows. But here we see, via freaky ass cutscene, a character we liked get corrupted in front of us- it's no longer a generic 'beat the bad guy' boss fight, it's a 'saving the innocent' battle with personal stakes! and the cutscene that initiates her battle? Iconic. Everyone in the fandom knew NOT. TAKE. MIRROR. I also have an attachment to her for very personal reasons haha. But yeah her design fucks hard, I wish the combat was as interesting as the rest of her schtick.

Cool (I admire them): Cynthia from pokemon gen 4 are u kidding me I wanted to be her SO BAD as a kid. She wiped the floor with me so many times. I made a sprite edit using her as a base when I was like 12 and used it for an avatar. If I can remember the name of my old forums I'll post it.

Cool as in 'has stuck with me': Honestly a lot of the OG Luigi's Mansion ghosts are cool bc they're like... just people, and it's real wild that the first boss of this nintendo game is somebody's dead mom. But Bogmire stands out for being kind of surprise creepy. I think about it a lot. What's its deal. Yeah it's the personification of the house's misery or whatever, but what does that MEAN. I was like 5 or 6, playing this game, and I go to a hidden graveyard and knock on a big cool gravestone and initiate this battle. For little me, it was the right mix of creepy but engaging. I was nervous but not terrified. I would buy a Bogmire plushie.

Cool as in 'I look forward to it when I play the game': The darknut minibosses from both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Yeah the Wind Waker one isn't that tough now that I have a big grown up brain, but it's still neat, and WW Darknuts are my literal all time favourite enemies to fight in any game ever. I never pass up the chance.

The Twilight Princess one, though? Holy shit. I replayed the game like 2 years ago, and that bitch STILL kinda freaked me out! YEAH you can cheese him with the bomb arrows if ur a little bitch, but if you do a genuine bona fide sword fight? That shit's fun as hell. There's this unnameable dread when you first enter that room. You can feel in your BONES that that suit of armor is going to come to life and whoop your ass.

Cool as in most badass/dramatic: oh yeah it's gotta be the Wind Waker final battle. Everything about it RULES. (SPOILERS) You're having a desperate sword fight for your life, a 10 year old kid who left home a month ago vs an ancient warlock who was so powerful the gods themselves had to seal him away.

He won, btw. Like Ganondorf literally wins in WW. It takes KoRL stepping in to DROWN BOTH HIMSELF AND GANONDORF to prevent Ganondorf from getting his wish. So you're trapped in a room, water pouring in on all sides, against a man who... doesn't even hate you. He's just doing what must be done. He could have killed Zelda, but he doesn't. He puts his sword away and backhands her instead of running her through. He's 100% just playing out his destiny. You aren't the one who defeated him the first time, you're just some kid who was dragged into this by a ghost.

And when you kill him BY STABBING YOUR GODDAMN SWORD INTO HIS HEAD, he laughs quietly before delivering one of the most iconic lines in Zelda history. Like that whole battle, from opening cutscene to the final, is so intense. So fucking intense. I'm convinced they couldn't have gotten away with half the shit they do if the game wasn't so cutesy. Easy Teen rating.

Cool as in Best: WW Molgera is 10/10. The fight itself is fun and satisfying! Molgera has a KICK ASS design! It's a fantastic and mood-setting opening cutscene! The sound design on the boss is freaky in all the right ways! It's a UNIQUE boss battle! She's got the greatest boss battle theme in the whole goddamn series and I'll DIE on this hill! She was so scary I cried while watching my dad play when I was little, and once I got to her battle on my own I not only remembered her, it took me two days to work up the courage to face her, and I felt like an absolute fucking badass once I did! In that moment, I fell well and truly in love with video games. I was Link, a child facing down an ancient wyrm, terrified but pressing on.

Also, in the original GCN version of the game, the hitbox on her tongue doesn't go away when she starts flying, so you can hookshot it and force her back into the sand.

14-a fic you didn’t expect to write

See You in New York. But I’m so glad I did. (No, you haven’t missed anything, it’s still stranded on WIP island at an intro and two parts, but it’s going to get a lot of attention in the new year)

This one started out as a result of a kiss prompt that left some people feeling very unkissed. And no one should leave a Logan Delos fic feeling unkissed. So SYiNY is my way of remedying that.

Getting to write Logan outside of WW and California has been fun, and Cynthia, reader’s badass boss, is one of my favorite characters that I’ve ever created. I have so much planned for Logan’s last few days in the big Apple, and I’m very excited to get to day three in particular. Anywho, didn’t think I’d write this one and now I love it so there that is.

Then there are about ten things floating on the fringes including a few requests that I need to get to. Aaaaaand another new series that I’ve written two sentences for. So we’ll count that one, too. 27-favorite fanfic author of the year

This is always a tricky one to answer because there is a lot of talent out there, and I have read lots of great stories from very good writers. But when asked to pick a favorite? A writer whose work I drop what I’m doing to read? A writer who does their research and digs deep into their characters and highlights the flaws as well as the merits? I’m stuck. It’s a HARD tie (no really, not even a pros and cons list will help) between @something-tofightfor and @its-my-little-dumpster-fire . Thanks for making it impossible, guys.

what would you like to see of the pokemon ss professor. evil team, rival(s), friends, gym leaders/elite four/champion, important npcs, and story? any particular pokemon designs/types/new formes/evolutions you'd like to see? any additional features like amie or minigames likie super training and stuff?

Honestly I’m just here for discovering a new region, story and characters (and lore and theme!), I have only very boring demands on mechanics and it’s just “bring back this thing”

a FUN transportation system. I really didn’t enjoy riding Tauros, too bulky and not quite as fast as I liked. The rollerskates from XY were my favourite thing ever but I’m also REALLY missing the bicycle in Let’s Go (though I get that the point is to ride/walk with your Pokémon instead, which is lovely, but urghghghghg I’m so SLOW unless I keep a rideable Pokémon in my team??)

Trainer customisation, which looks very likely, but please bring back clothes that are EASY TO GET and NOT LOCKED, none of SuMo’s bullshit version-locked colours and dyeing business. and clothes that MIX AND MATCH PRETTILY, for gods’ sake, my biggest joy in video games is making my character wear thigh-high socks and the shoes of SuMo were terrible.

also customisation of my character’s overall look?? why don’t i get haircuts in Let’s Go?? ;ww;

yes yes i remember this is a Pokémon game – I’d be happy to see the return of gyms just because I like the concept of a building entirely themed and directed by a person with an inherent puzzle. I don’t know why I didn’t really enjoy the concept of the trials areas quite as much, even though they were varied and some of them super funny. (KAKI………….) And it was surprising to have a progression checkpoint system that DIDN’T always involve battling…

fun side activity that you can spend hours on and train Pokémon specifically for – I think the Sinnoh version of Contests and HGSS’s sport minigames were my favourite, and PokéWood studios were super original and fun to explore. Mantine surfing was a delight at first but I got bored after a couple hours, and it can be very frustrating.

can you tell i’m really not that interested in in-depth pokémon battling

relevant day/night cycle, seasons…… would be amazing……. but i doubt that one is ever coming back………

if you have a ferris wheel you’re legally obligated to give us dates and same-sex dating options again

I’m super looking forward to the region (especially the London city!!), but I don’t have any particular expectations or hopes from the theme? Would be cool if one game is focused on attack and the other on defense, somehow…

I’m fine with either dropping or reprising Mega Evos, Z-moves, etc., I don’t really care about those in the games. I’d like just regular new evolutions and pre-evolutions of old Pokémon…

I was gonna say I want a functional and fun online co-op system but I’m gonna have to pay for online connectivity, aren’t i.

also uhhhhhh a few cameos just off-kilter enough to be charming without feeling like Nostalgia Pandering, so no Green/Red/Leaf but continuing the saga of Shirona/Cynthia or Handsome/Looker showing up would be fun, or really random and unexpected ones like Annabelle in SM.
