One of the funnest things about reading Peerless is that by himself, Feng Xiao is a terrifyingly brilliant and cunning spymaster, but because he’s put next to Cui Buqu he comes across like an absolute himbo.

Truly one of the best character vid I've seen. Immaculately edited with a perfect song as the running track. This is Ling Buyi in his very essence; ruthless, brutal, cunning, and unhinged. His physicality and fighting efficiency is undeniable.
Brilliant no, @stirfriedgoddess ?

Aaaaaa, @dreamyklutzsblog linked me to this MV of LBY and I am dying.
Def my favorite character of 2022 so far!

The many names of Ling Buyi
I have been griping that on AO3, the tag for stupidface YSJ includes his birthname AND his courtesy name, but for Ling Buyi? Just that. A name not his with the name of the family he wanted to wipe off the face of the planet. On one hand, yay for a spoiler-free AO3, but on the other...what if I wanted to write or read a fic with A'Li? What am I supposed to do then?
I wanted to add another name, but here is the problem. THIS MAN HAS TOO MANY NAMES. I realize in cdramas this is a thing, but this man takes it to a whole new level.
Here is a list.
Ling Buyi (his cousin's name and assumed identity for most of the story)
Huo Wushang (his birth name)
A'Zheng (his childhood name)
Ling/Huo Zisheng (his courtesy name, which we'll be nice and call 1 name instead of 2)
A'Li (his cousin's birth name, which we hear used to refer to him several times before we realize it's not his)
Huo Buyi (his chosen name post-reveal)
Shiyi Lang (Eleventh Young Master, which some of the subs omitted, but also very much a thing people use to refer to him)
Anyway I'm thinking I'll just try to start pushing the tag "Ling Buyi | Huo Zisheng" to cover as much territory as possible without overwhelming the system

Chapter 1-14 Low-light Lotus (低光荷)
Chapter 1-11
.
.
.
Fu Rong: ... It's all dug up...
You: Huff... The lotus roots underneath are intertwined and tangled...
You: As expected, there's something wrong with Wushang Taoist Temple, something very wrong.
Fu Rong: With the lotus roots so intertwined like this, these lotus flowers have been here for quite some time.
You: But this is the Low-light Lotus from the palace, strictly forbidden from being circulated among the common people.
You: This person, however, planted the Low-light Lotus near a remote Taoist temple, and it has been growing there for many years, which means...
You: He was not afraid of being discovered at all. Because he was a high-ranking and extremely powerful eunuch, deeply favored by Emperor Ling.
You: Fu Rong, if you got your hands on a precious lotus, would you plant it in the wilderness?
Fu Rong: I would sell it.
You: ... No ambition. That's why you'll never be powerful in your life.
You: There's a divination text on this bamboo slip.
"Lotus shadows at midnight"... The Low-light Lotus that only glows at night.
"Moon appears west of the temple"... At midnight, the moon should be directly overhead, how could it be on the west side of the Taoist temple?
You: Because the Low-light Lotus is planted on the west side of the Taoist temple, their silver glow becomes a moon that eternally exists west of the temple.
You: And then there's... "One eye beyond the mortal world, heaven and earth, a platform of gold and silver."
You: I heard those Xiliang soldiers say that the well outside the Taoist temple is dry.
Fu Rong: Eye... the well's eye.
You: Yes, the well's eye. There shouldn't be a dry well here. With the lotus pond next to it, it indicates a water source, so how could there be a dry well!
Fu Rong: ... "Heaven and earth, a platform of gold and silver", it's under the dry well.
-They proceed to go down into the well using a rope-
You: The well shaft is longer than I imagined...
You: Ah!!!!!!!
Fu Rong: Be careful.
I almost lost my balance in the darkness, he grabbed my shoulder and guided me down the rope.
The scent of Chinese photinia on him is so obvious... is it because we are too close...
Fu Rong: We're here.

Wushang (Peerless) / 無雙 (BL) By 夢溪石
I finished this novel quite some time ago but was extremely lazy about writing a review for it. The initial plan was to do a full review but having left it for so long, I no longer recall any of the main events so I’m afraid this will have to be based on my hazy and unreliable memory.
You may recall how much praise I sang for the author’s other popular work  Thousand Autumns (if you haven’t read it yet, make sure you do!). Needless to say, I had very high hopes for this novel.
And it is with regret when I say that my expectations were not met.
The MC is a quiet, sickly man who looks like any day could be his last, ordinary in appearance but extremely intelligent and calculative. The beautiful and talkative ML is coveted by all, and is smart and scheming. Both the MC and ML officially work for the crown and country, but underneath their departments are on opposite sides. They met due to investigating a case and from then on, they collaborated together (aka used each other) for respective gains and despite their outwardly friendly facade, they were constantly scheming against each other and that was fun to read.
The world building was superb, the plot was executed quite well, and the characters were also fleshed out and to some extent, even more so than Thousand Autumns. Sadly, the novel just wasn’t that memorable. Relationship wise, I did not, at any point in the story, find myself rooting for them. While the MC and ML were fine as individuals, I really wasn’t bothered about whether they got together or not.
If I had to rate this using stars then it would be higher than a 3 but lower than 4. While it wasn’t for me, I reckon this is definitely worth the read if you like this genre or the author’s style. And if the reviews on NU are anything to go by, this one comes highly recommended!
Rating: read if idle | ★★★+
The Earth is Online / 地球上線 (BL) By 莫晨歡
I started this novel because I’d read one too many rebirth and revenge stories and felt like reading something different at the time. This is a novel about survival through puzzle games and gaining special abilities along the way. The story started off well, the background world setting was actually pretty good but it became rather tedious and boring along the way, and the ending even more so. In terms of romance I’d say this was more shounen ai than yaoi as it was pretty basic and preliminary. I couldn’t tell you if the main CP actually had any real feelings for one another. Sure, I accept that the world is ending and love would  probably be the last thing on anyone’s mind but if other novels could do it (and do it well), then why was it a problem here? Unless of course, romance was added simply as a tickbox for the sake of being ‘bl’. Romance issues aside, my main niggle was actually with the author. There were some games/puzzles and rules that made me question my intelligence because they simply baffled me from the get-go. I’m either extremely dumb or they weren’t explained properly - I’m inclined to go with the latter. I often felt that the author gave retrospective explanations to highlight a character’s intelligence rather than make us understand that the character was intelligent to begin with. By doing things this way, it served no real purpose other than to undermine the reader’s intelligence! I can’t really recommend this novel but I guess those who are looking for a filler read, or those who generally enjoy stories involving puzzles, abilities, action, and survival (and death) amidst an apocalyptic backdrop then sure, go for it!     Rating: read if idle | ★★★

Masterfully done!
like a Greek Tragedy... an Operatic Death
This episode!!!.. even the drumming as Shaoshang tries to leave the manor, but most especially... from the moment they arrived to the banquet... the set, the lighting, the colours, the music score, the aural mood that greatly heightens the viewers emotions, the body movements... GLORIOUSLY SUBLIME!!!
Even the menacing laugh as he slowly walks towards Ling Yi... the syllable by syllable - clearly enunciated name, the crunch as the sword penetrates the flesh and the ‘schwing’ of the sword as it slices Ling Yi’s neck, the bodily attitude, the blurring and focusing again, the slow motion as he lets go of the Marquis’s head...  Devastatingly beautiful!
So unhinged, it’s perfect!
and at the end, a brief moment of disbelief and then, a cathartic release of emotion. It’s done! The slightest flash of joy immediately extinguished with sadness and grief. Unbridled tears come. The blood, tears, snot, saliva... it’s not pretty, but somehow very necessary!* It’s like being brought to a journey of complex emotions while the heart is being ripped out and at the same time awestruck as you watch.
*Apparently this was Wu Lei’s sugestion, don’t know if it’s true. Too lazy to look it up.
Tumblr media
At certain angles, his face looks gaunt, immaciated, skeletal even. Here he looks deranged... immaculately put together, not a hair out of place, controlled... but he looks deranged nevertheless.
I don’t know if this is by design... after all the carnage, he is still put together, just a few strands of hair out of place, a few rips on the clothes. I like the disparity of somehow still immaculate but with blood spatter everywhere.
Tumblr media
And can I just say, A’Fei and A’Qi’s sacrifice are no less than anybody elses! Such devotion! Such loyalty! I love them! I was bawlin’ when he told them, “Please stay alive.”  I’ve wondered if they knew for years who he really was, but that might have been too risky. I’m inclined to think that they didn’t until around Shaoshang knew or just slightly before/after. Judging from the Third Prince’s reaction when Shaoshang revealed to the court that he was Huo Chongs son, I don’t think he knew either.
A number times** I have watched this and still as impactful as the first time  when it was released back in mid(ish) August. Episode 48 was... just... firecrackers blowing up in my head!!!!... The freakin dramagods delivered!!! I was awestruck and still am after rewatching.
**I watch episodes on different websites. It gives me the option of different subtittles because some of the dialogues are interpreted so differently, some actually changes the narrative! By and by, I think subs on Viki gives more information especially on traditions, social ranks, what those ranks mean, refers to what litterature, colloquialisms, etc., etc. Little details that we would otherwise miss when only refering to the subs on other websites.
