Oh man, his explanation that what matters is not the length of life but what you do with it, and being able to do what you want with your life... is especially poignant from a man whose autonomy was basically stripped from him as a teenager. He was made host of a divine weapon (and lbr he was NOT given a choice in that) and then used to fight their war for them... and then immediately after imprisoned. He hasn't been able to "live the life you want" since he was a child.

WTF Xie You?!! (But also, why didn't Yuanzhong do anything to defend himself?)

Damn, payback for something that was an accident? Tanyin herself didn't feel the need to take revenge for what happened at Pinghu, but Xie You feels he needs to do so on her behalf.

Ah man I kinda love when cdramas do this whole thing where they put such emphasis on what it means for one person to kowtow to another... for the master to kneel for the student, or the parent to kneel to beg the child. It's a uniquely cultural emphasis.

Is that why she's been hesitating and pondering over this final question? Not because she doesn't understand the task... but because she was afraid that she understood the implications of her completing it... and what it would mean to Xie You?

Mmmm Tanghua makes a good point. Apologising in the hopes of forgiveness isn't entirely sincere. Apologising for your past actions without expectation of forgiveness, but because you sincerely regret those actions, despite knowing the past cannot be changed, is more so.

I'm still not sure Yuanzhong particularly cares to hear it though. And tbh chasing after him when he's made it very clear he doesn't want to see you still makes this feel somewhat selfish... like you are apologising not for his benefit but for yours, so that you can feel "better" that you apologised sincerely.

The many names of Ling Buyi

I have been griping that on AO3, the tag for stupidface YSJ includes his birthname AND his courtesy name, but for Ling Buyi? Just that. A name not his with the name of the family he wanted to wipe off the face of the planet. On one hand, yay for a spoiler-free AO3, but on the other...what if I wanted to write or read a fic with A'Li? What am I supposed to do then?

I wanted to add another name, but here is the problem. THIS MAN HAS TOO MANY NAMES. I realize in cdramas this is a thing, but this man takes it to a whole new level.

Here is a list.

Ling Buyi (his cousin's name and assumed identity for most of the story)

Huo Wushang (his birth name)

A'Zheng (his childhood name)

Ling/Huo Zisheng (his courtesy name, which we'll be nice and call 1 name instead of 2)

A'Li (his cousin's birth name, which we hear used to refer to him several times before we realize it's not his)

Huo Buyi (his chosen name post-reveal)

Shiyi Lang (Eleventh Young Master, which some of the subs omitted, but also very much a thing people use to refer to him)

Anyway I'm thinking I'll just try to start pushing the tag "Ling Buyi | Huo Zisheng" to cover as much territory as possible without overwhelming the system

Wushang (Peerless) / 無雙 (BL) By 夢溪石

I finished this novel quite some time ago but was extremely lazy about writing a review for it. The initial plan was to do a full review but having left it for so long, I no longer recall any of the main events so I’m afraid this will have to be based on my hazy and unreliable memory.

You may recall how much praise I sang for the author’s other popular work  Thousand Autumns (if you haven’t read it yet, make sure you do!). Needless to say, I had very high hopes for this novel.

And it is with regret when I say that my expectations were not met.

The MC is a quiet, sickly man who looks like any day could be his last, ordinary in appearance but extremely intelligent and calculative. The beautiful and talkative ML is coveted by all, and is smart and scheming. Both the MC and ML officially work for the crown and country, but underneath their departments are on opposite sides. They met due to investigating a case and from then on, they collaborated together (aka used each other) for respective gains and despite their outwardly friendly facade, they were constantly scheming against each other and that was fun to read.

The world building was superb, the plot was executed quite well, and the characters were also fleshed out and to some extent, even more so than Thousand Autumns. Sadly, the novel just wasn’t that memorable. Relationship wise, I did not, at any point in the story, find myself rooting for them. While the MC and ML were fine as individuals, I really wasn’t bothered about whether they got together or not.

If I had to rate this using stars then it would be higher than a 3 but lower than 4. While it wasn’t for me, I reckon this is definitely worth the read if you like this genre or the author’s style. And if the reviews on NU are anything to go by, this one comes highly recommended!

The Earth is Online / 地球上線 (BL) By 莫晨歡

I started this novel because I’d read one too many rebirth and revenge stories and felt like reading something different at the time. This is a novel about survival through puzzle games and gaining special abilities along the way. The story started off well, the background world setting was actually pretty good but it became rather tedious and boring along the way, and the ending even more so. In terms of romance I’d say this was more shounen ai than yaoi as it was pretty basic and preliminary. I couldn’t tell you if the main CP actually had any real feelings for one another. Sure, I accept that the world is ending and love would  probably be the last thing on anyone’s mind but if other novels could do it (and do it well), then why was it a problem here? Unless of course, romance was added simply as a tickbox for the sake of being ‘bl’. Romance issues aside, my main niggle was actually with the author. There were some games/puzzles and rules that made me question my intelligence because they simply baffled me from the get-go. I’m either extremely dumb or they weren’t explained properly - I’m inclined to go with the latter. I often felt that the author gave retrospective explanations to highlight a character’s intelligence rather than make us understand that the character was intelligent to begin with. By doing things this way, it served no real purpose other than to undermine the reader’s intelligence! I can’t really recommend this novel but I guess those who are looking for a filler read, or those who generally enjoy stories involving puzzles, abilities, action, and survival (and death) amidst an apocalyptic backdrop then sure, go for it!     Rating: read if idle | ★★★

Look at his little smile. Look how he can't help but smile as someone refers to Tanyin as his wife and praises her talents...

Yes yes very romantic going to rescue your "wife" from the rain but bestie we are leaving the 0 impulse control, gold devouring CHILD unsupervised again!!

That treasure bowl is coated in gold powder... there's a good likelihood Ah-xui will try to eat it! 😂

Yuanzhong seems oddly hesitant/reluctant about letting Ah-xui grow up...

These two (but primarily Yuanzhong lbr, Tanyin does at least keep asking should we go after him, what if someone takes him etc etc) are stunningly lackadaisical/neglectful parents!!

There is definitely something going on with Yuanzhong regarding Ah-Xui growing up...

Mei Shan!! What's he doing here?!

Oh dang!! He knows what Yuanzhong's plan is.

Aaaaand that's why Yuanzhong is so ambivalent about Ah-Xui growing up. Because once he does, it's time, and Yuanzhong will have to decide if he's actually going through with the plan.

Oh dang that is a harsh fortune to lay on a child?! And it also explains a lot about his pessimism and fatalism. He's been told he can only survive by striving to do good at all times and if he ever wants anything for himself or gets attached to anything, he will doom himself.

You think you know everything about him Tanyin but there's some pretty important context you are missing...

Hmmm the painter who painted the magic fish in the bowl... and the dancing goddess illusion. He looks like he is waiting for/expecting someone or something?

The human craftsmen are already working on renewable energy? Good for them!

Oh the painter guy is an ass. How incredibly rude to swan in and blatantly ignore everybody but the pretty girl and direct all your attention to boastful flirting with her. Yuanzhong's expression could melt steel. And Mei Shan trying to break the uncomfortable atmosphere by commenting on the weather... 😂

Did Ah-Xui, as I predicted, eat all the decorative gold powder off that bowl?
