Xuanzang's Cassock (2012) 玄奘袈裟
Director: Zhang Xin Screenwriter: Wu Huaijie Starring : Song Tao / Ji Wen Genre: Drama Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Chinese Date: 2012 Duration: 83 minutes Type: Crossover
Summary:
The movie "Xuan Zang's Kasaya" tells the story of the treasure "Hundred Gold Clouds and Water Moji Kasaya" left by Master Xuanzang, an eminent monk of the Tang Dynasty, who was dedicated in Mogao Grottoes on the eve of the Revolution of 1911. Suddenly, various forces gathered in Dunhuang, each with different purposes in search of the treasure cassock. Rongqing, the Minister of Academic Affairs, strongly recommended Yao Kun, a bachelor of the Hanlin Academy, to go to Dunhuang to search for Xuanzang's cassock, hoping to use the magic power of the treasure to save the precarious Qing Dynasty. Yao Kun and his cousin, antique businessman Xia Zifeng, disguised themselves as businessmen and headed to the desert. Yao and Xia went to the "Sihai Inn" and met the proprietress Yu Niang. They also met Guan Yanfei and Guan Yanruo, brothers and sisters, sons of the Gansu General Soldier. The Guan brothers and sisters also came here to find the cassock. His elder brother Guan Yanfei was secretly coerced by Yuan Shikai.
In order to protect the family from Yuan Shikai's persecution, he secretly assisted the commander Cang Lang sent by Yuan Shikai to snatch Xuanzang's cassock and sell it to foreigners in exchange for arms. The simple and reckless Guan Yanruo thought he was looking for the cassock. It was for the sake of the imperial court, and out of eagerness to protect the treasure. He was afraid that something might happen if the cassock fell into the hands of a merchant, so he wanted to find the cassock before Yao and Xia, so he opposed them at every turn. The clues to find the cassock were so intertwined and obscure that everyone racked their brains and couldn't find the way. In the end, the knowledgeable Yao Kun first found the clue. Guan Yanfei took advantage of his plan and simply used Yao Kun to follow him to gradually get closer to the treasure cassock.
In the confrontation with Yao Kun, Guan Yanruo was gradually moved by Yao Kun's integrity and kindness and developed a good impression. In the process of searching for Kasaya, he discovered that his family was being controlled by Yuan Shikai's special envoy, Cang Lang. The search for the cassock was also ordered by Yuan Shikai, not to protect the national treasure. As everyone gets closer and closer to the cassock, Cang Lang forces Guan Yanfei to do whatever it takes to get the cassock as soon as possible. In order to get the final clue, Guan Yanfei puts Yao and Xia into a dungeon. After being tortured, Xia Zifeng told Guan Yanfei where the cassock was buried in order to save his cousin Yao Kun. So Canglang took Guan Yanfei and his men straight to Baobogou. At this time, Guan Yanruo used a trick to kill Yao Kun and Xia Zifeng. During the escape, the three were discovered by the Qing soldiers guarding them, and they were assisted by Yu Niang at the critical moment.
After defeating the Qing soldiers and rescuing them, it turned out that Yu Niang was a private treasure-protecting organization that had been operating near Dunhuang. After learning that Yao Kun was ordered to protect the cassocks, she had already sent people to observe secretly. In the end, while protecting the treasure With the help of others, Yao Kun and others got the cassocks first, but were surrounded by soldiers brought by Cang Lang and Guan Yanfei. When they were desperate, Yu Niang and her men arrived again. It turns out that Yu Niang and Xia Zifeng are both folk treasure protectors, and they lurked in the desert to protect the national treasure. A melee broke out between good and evil. Guan Yanfei tried to protect his sister and had a dispute with Canglang. Guan Yanruo was injured by Canglang in the melee. Guan Yanfei also died under Canglang's knife while trying to save his sister. In the end, Yao Kun killed the wolf and ended the melee. Yao Kun returned to the capital with the treasure cassock. Looking back on what he saw and heard during the treasure hunt, he deeply felt that the Qing government could no longer save the country. And the Qing Empire that he worked hard for ended its 268-year rule in depression... No so-called "divine power" can withstand the rolling tide of history.

Would Lang Wu Yao (pipa/magic pipa sword) from Thunderbolt Fantasy season 2 do? Puppet dude strums magic pipa(barrier) and fights with pipa turned sword(as sword and as pipa's sonic/qi projectile).
He is quite possibly the most direct of lute/guitar based fighter that I can remember after Bluegrass of Silverhawks. Oh I think season 3 explores his background.
Manhua wise I only remember the image of one guy Nameless from Tian Xia(无名 - 天下 ) playing the erhu. I'm less sure about his skill sets but its seems more about qi domination than projecttile summary wise
I'm not totally sure about 6 finger Lute demon from Louis Cha novel. Too far back in Hong Kong wuxia movies memories and I risk confusing Dongfang Bubai's embroidery thread attacks for guzheng projecttiles

17 and 24 of that ask game for Sanji, Hayato and Xiao uvu
This Ask meme
17. What's a book, movie, or show you think [character] would like?
Sanji
Very obvious answer? Anything to do with cooking. He breaths cooking. But he is also a majour softy and slight pervert so I can see him have some guilty pleasure movies that involve a lot of romance and soft erotica. I am not very versed in ANY of these things, but I could see Sanji enjoying Titanic and Moulin Rouge. I also think he would love Food Wars for not just the cooking, but the over the top orgasmic depiction of how good food can taste.
Hayato
Obvious answer? Cryptid fanatic. Doesn't even matter if the movie/show/book is good. He WILL engage with it, even if just to say afterwards that it SUCKS. I personally see him def more into horror that is on the supernatural side and less horror that goes into splatter or gore territory like Saw or-- whatever other slasher film there is, I personally do not watch much horror. Since he is also incredibly intelligent I can see him be REALLY into crime thrillers, but only the super technical and bizare ones that are hard for some others to read. I can also see him be into extremely accurate mafia novels. If he reads a mafia related book and it gets something terribly wrong he stops IMMIDEATLY. One movie that especially fascinates him and the book it is based on is 'I heared you paint houses'. I think he is a biiit of a fan of Scorcese, tho he does also have his opinions (TM)
Xiao
I think there is ONLY an obvious answer? Xiao is REALLY into chinese mythology and Wu Xia Stories. He isn't someone who engages a lot with shows or movies, but he does read enough especially theoretic books about different martial arts. Fiction isn't exactly his thing unless it's historic novels set in ancient China. Or the usual classics. He actually also has a bit of a soft spot for poems and books that are juste purely wholesome. Stories about someone making it out of the darkness or just the beauty of mundanity. Nothing overly melodramatic. Maybe that means he would like some Ghibli movies? Jury out on that one.
24. What's your favourite thing about [character]?
Oh boy here we go
Sanji
wet boy soggy cat baby pathetic manlet. Need I say more? I won't go into spoilers, but Sanji is both incredibly infuriating and beloved to me. I just love when he is caught up in a situation, where he just ends up showing his true colors. How soft and kind he can be, how much he cares about others even those he might not particularly like much or strangers. He is ready to lay his life on the line EVEN IF HE SAYS HE DOESN'T CARE OH BOY DOES HE CARE!!!! Especially the Wano Kuni Arc has made me adore him so much. Whole Cake Island broke me into pieces but Wano Kuni showed both his worst and his best sides. Also who doesn't love a man that can cook? The way he just LIGHTS UP when he gets to talk cooking or about his dream of finding the All Blue! *chefs kiss* (pun intended I am absolutely kissing that chef, icky smoke be damned)
Hayato
The fuck do you mean like? This bitch is the bane of my existance and i hate him and his stupid face with his aweful green eyes and the dumb smile he is capable of making. Oh and don't get me started on his aweful obsession with UFOs and cryptids wow what a loser, what an absolute cringefail, it's not like I enjoy his damn progress as a character from a selfcentered obsessive idiot to a more open cooperative jerk that actually trusts people and relies on them, oh gods are you crazy nah get that away from me. Bitch is so smart it's infuriating I loathe how intelligent and truly innovative he is, god his brightness is so annoying!
I do love his cat tho c:
Xiao
Love of my life one of the most misunderstood and MISINTERPRETED characters in all of Genshin yes you heared me FIGHT ME!
Look. Xiao is dear to my heart. I know I say it was Kaeya who got me into Genshin, but nah we all know that is a lie, yes he was the character that piqued my interest, but before the game was out the Genshin website already had some mini profiles on some characters and Xiao also had one. I made one look at the guy and said "that one". He is an abuse victim that was enslaved and forced to do horrendous things, knowing nothing but savagery and violence until he was saved, swearing unwavering loyalty to his savior who gave him his current name. And his life just kept being full of violence, as he became a Yaksha, cleansing and protecting Liyue through slaughter. This guy has probably MILLENIA of karmic debt accumilated, he was a GENERAL in a war, he faught alongside a myriad of other Yakshas and-- in the end he became the only survivor. Xiao is the LAST Yaksha, he is the only one remaining, he keeps his comrades and friends memory close to him, he saw them perish and fall to their karmic debt and after it all he became someone who kept fighting for Liyues safety in pure solitude, because GUESS WHAT he can't even get close to mortals. His strong karmic debt causes others harm, so he naturally isolated himself and accepted this fate. Sacrifice is something Xiao sees as natural and unavoidable, bitch is DEPRESSED and absolutely unsocial. He just has no social skills whatsoever and human customs confuse him. It's not maliciousness, it's actual confusion and mostly ignorance that leads to him being mostly misunderstood. He needs patience and a lot of understanding. So many people just write him off as some edgeboy, being rude and arrogant- when in actuallity boy just doesn't know how to deal with people. deep down he is a soft soul. FOR FUCKS SAKE his namecard says QUOTE
He longs for a day to come when he will wear the mask and dance — not to conquer demons, but to the tune of that flute amid a sea of flowers.
HE WANTS TO DANCE IN A SEA OF FLOWERS WHILE FLUTE MUSIC PLAYS I AM SORRY HOW CAN ANYONE SAY THIS GUY IS EDGY WHEN HE IS A FOCKING MARSHMALLOW DEEP DOWN
He lost so much, he believed to find his end by being alone forever until he succumbs to his karmic debt-- and yet he tries SO HARD
From watching the Lantern rites Xiao lantern from just outside the city, to watching the fireworks on the roof of wang shu inn, to COMING INTO THE CITY TO DINE WITH OTHER PEOPLE, TO ACTUALLY RELEASING A XIAO LANTERN WITH THE TRAVELER HIMSELF!!!! Even in his letters he says that he is starting to be more casual with the other adepti, he joined the fucking Poetry Festival-- I am losing my mind at this guy he is genuinely so fucking pillowy soft deep down, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE SWITCH THE VOICES TO CN AND HEAR KINSEN IN ALL HIS GLORY CONVEY XIAOS CHARACTER!
(I am sorry but whatever the english voice director told his VA was absolute bullshit fight me on this.)
I am very normal about this guy
Other canon things that make me lose my marbles
The fact that the moment Xiao and the traveler first meat a track plays in the background that is called Lovers Oath
You can bait Xiao into coming somewhere or participate in something when you say the traveler will be there
During the Chasm Storyline he first wanted to keep the others away saying that to keep them safe and Yanfei USES THE TRAVELER TRICK to get Xiao to IMMIDEATLY join their gang.
Usually special dishes are food that is prepared by the characters themself. Sweet Dream, Xiaos Specialty dish is something the traveler makes for him
He???? eats or at least ATE dreams???? He says almond tofu tastes like sweet dreams???? thats where the special dish got its name from???? hello?????
when a traveling pilgrim came to the mountain as Ganyu and Xiao were training he did NOT want to deal with a mortal and basically told Ganyu her next training task is to deal with that guy before he skidaddled. Pro move to escape social interactions
when saving everyone from the chasm he sacrificed himself to ensure everyone else makes it to the surface. Daddy dearest ofc saved him but he was SO ready to let this be his end. I am glad it wasn't
from what I can tell his illuminated beast form is a bird, not like cloud retainer however and the fact there is a CHONK BIRB XIAO PLUSHY has me wheezing.
especially in early game crystalflies are hard to catch. Xiaos first birthday letter included 10 crystal cores, the item that drops when you catch crystalflies, a very valuable resource for crafting condensed resin. He also admits that he kind of didn't intend to catch that many and that he believes they would look cute in the travelers hair
he is strongly implied if not outright confirmed to be in chronic pain from his karmic debt. Pls save my boy
I might be a bit off on some of these but I am at LEAST 89% sure these are true facts.

Okay so! It took me a bit to get back here for recs but:
1) harem dramas:
I'm no longer big on harem dramas and most of them nowadays are kind of eh to me, but I would suggest checking out Legend of Zhenhuan/Empresses in the Palace and Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace for two examples of top notch dramas of this genre.
I personally found Ruyi a bit... Not as much to my personal taste as I did for Yanxi, but it was solidly enjoyable!
2) for dramas with women:
Hands down I will always recommend The Story of Minglan for this. There is no way I won't. Minglan hype bot forever.
3) dramas with great fight scenes:
Overall there's been a lack of these recently, and I've always felt that Wuxia/Wuda movies tend to do these better than shows bc of setup and budget: the Ip Man series has some of my FAVORITE fight scenes of all time ever.
I've been watching Side Story of the Fox Volant (2022) which is an adaptation of another lesser known Jin Yong work with @autumnslantern has pretty great fight scenes that I'm enamoured by, but we've only watched 12/40 episodes so if you do watch this please note that we'd prefer no spoilers!
4) have you tried Republican era dramas? There's some pretty good ones there about China in the 20th century and the fashion is GREAT.
5) there's a new loch coming out soon either end of this year or beginning of the next and it looks AMAZING.
Here's a link to the trailer: https://m.weibo.cn/status/N5ZMnAMmw?refer_flag=1001030103_
Here's the mydramalist link: https://mydramalist.com/739239-jin-yong-wu-xia-shi-jie
Please look for the various loch story elements in that poster by zooming in, some of the elements you can recognize there are FANTASTIC.
And it promises to build on the backstory of the greats as well. I have 3757 images of the bts and it's all like aaaaaaa
Always feel free to ask me for more specifics!
Why you should watch legend of the condor heroes 2017
Now, now, I've read much better posts but after watching it, I am going to give good reasons.
Fights scenes. THEY ARE WONDERFUL. no, but seriously, I am hyped up on the fight scenes so much. There's also a fascinating meta from @tavina-writes about cultivators and loch martial artists.
Great plot: you will never get bored! Every episode has something going on and is full of twists and turns!
Great characters: what I like about loch is how every character is a complex self, with personal experiences and emotional baggages.
Lot of interesting themes: power-angry fighters, love, betray, losses, filial pity, etc.
Great main couple: huang rong and guo jin are adorable! He can't lie! She always lies! As @tavina-writes has said: They look at each other and see the best in each other! Both of them think the other person is the best person in the whole world! I also like how their relationship develops when guo jin suffers great losses and how it's handled.
The love is there, but it's not enough. Every relationship is heartbreaking because you can see how the characters love each other deeply but it's not enough!
It's funny as hell! I laughed so much!
Sympathetic and nuanced villains! You really can understand where they are coming from and why they are like that! As @autumnslantern has said: loch 2017 discovered the exact right amount of woobie sex pest can be and that amount was shockingly not 0%
INCREDIBLE WORLD-BUILDING!
It's great, and wonderful, and you will be haunted by all its characters.
bonus: GREAT WOMEN:

Time Raiders is fun! The framing narrative is horrible, the whole movie is well, bad, but I love Wu Xia and Zhang Qiling and I like the warm irreverence of the Wu raiders even if they are terrible at treating artifacts correctly. I honestly really enjoyed the bad sci -channel threats and the traps and mechanisms were pretty clever! Also MEET CUTE in tomb. And Wu Xia! That is peak bratty energy and I am HERE for it. I love how smitten Zhang Qiling is. The ending is awful but overall, honestly? Would watch again, albeit I'd skip lots of sections lol. Enthusiastic now with first impression over here.
#the lost tomb#time raiders#greymouser indulges her fantasy kick#wu xia#zhang qiling#silly movie seriousness is for kids#i don't even know my little pony but Wu Xia totally gets a cutie mark#it's late and this is unfiltered mostly#will probably regret

thank you for the tags @runnning-outof-time @zablife i LOVE your choices i loveddddd the great gatsby and laurence olivier was so gorgeous in rebecca i loved it
1. fantastic mr fox - i am an unapologetic wes anderson stan. this movie was my childhood, it just has the best most comfy vibes, the cutest animation and really just amazing visuals and wes’ casting and soundtrack HITS EVERY TIME
2. ferris bueller’s day off - come on now. the sweetest friend group ever it just makes you want to reach out and grab life and live it to the fullest
3. heathers - winona ryder my wife christian slater my husband great storyline really great styling and symbolism through costuming it’s great
4. kung fu hustle/ 功夫 - mr stephen chow must absolutely be mentioned here. a lot of his movies are silly mindless comedies and i just throw one on whenever i need to unwind. this one is also a comedy but i definitely think it’s his best. besides the comedy aspect it has a killer storyline, amazingly eclectic characters and such a wonderful tribute to chinese culture, martial arts and wu xia that lends it just this entire other dimension that is amazing
5. la cinema paradiso - SOBBB such a beautiful beautiful movie told in this gorgeous way. it encapsulates everything that’s beautiful and everything that hurts about growing up and how important cinema is. i love it to death but i can’t watch it bc it will make me feel emotions
6. trainspotting - another book to movie adaptation!! done extremely well with a cast that embodies every character perfectly
7. raise the red lantern/把红灯笼高高 - ANOTHER book to movie adaptation! zhang yi mou is a genius with colour and i love gong li so so so much. so good.
Movie Tag Game!
Rules: post 7 comfort movies and tag 7 people
Thanks for the tag Katy @midnightswithdearkatytspb !! ❤️ … this was rather tough…music is more my speed, so to think of 7 movies took me a bit. I gave it my best shot though.
1. The Revenant — my absolute favorite movie…the visuals are GORGEOUS!!
2. 1917 — THE SCORE!!!! It alone got me through student teaching! Another movie that has gorgeous (yet haunting) visuals and such a moving story.
3. Almost Famous — my mom and I quote this movie on the daily. It’s such a fun one to watch.
4. Dazed and Confused — another one that I quote on the daily. There’s no point to it, really.
5. The Great Gatsby — the newest one. I (didn’t) read the book in high school, but this version had come out a few years earlier and we were able to watch it in class. Another visually pleasing movie.
This is where things got hard…
6. Rent — I’ve seen the musical live a few times and the movie does it so much justice. A good bit of the original Broadway cast are in the movie too, so all that’s really been adapted is the set/flow of events.
7. The Kid — one that makes my history heart happy. No lie, my mind was blown when they first showed Dane DeHaan as Billy the Kid because I was like ‘oh shit, that’s actually him!’ and they get bonus points for having him stand like the actual Billy the Kid was standing in the only known photograph of him (which made me geek out…my family didn’t care too much though haha) But anyways, this is a super interesting story that is based off of one of the coolest stories in the history of the Amercian West.

I will say that I'm kind of hesitant on Jin Yong movies in general, since the books are so large. (Disclaimer that I've always been more of a Jin Yong drama fan). I'm excited to see this movie! I'm just...uncertain about it being the best introduction to LOCH or Jin Yong esp as rumors seem to be stating that this movie adapts only the last five chapters of the book (Mongolia War Campaign) and I think without the context of the previous 35 chapters I don't know how interesting or how accurate a depiction that'll portray of LOCH to an audience who doesn't have a lot of background in what it is!
Further caveat: I think this is a really exciting and perfectly great movie for people who already know the main storyline of LOCH and I am perhaps the ONLY LOCH Mongolia arc 1 and arc 2 stan in the world so this very well could cater brilliantly to my niche Mongolia Arc interests!! Buuuut my gut instinct is that this will confuse people who don't actually know the story/plotlines that converge for the last 5 chapters.
I'm far more excited for the new LOCH adaptation which also appears to be taking on the backstories of the five greats and BE STILL MY BEATING YAOHENG SHIPPER HEART. https://mydramalist.com/739239-jin-yong-wu-xia-shi-jie
idk strictly if I can actually essay this in any way that makes entire sense but this bit of the recent mxtx interview sticks out to me bc I've been talking about how both cql (in many ways) and mdzs the book itself has in ways echoed Jin Yong novels (for me I primarily see the influences of XAJH and LOCH in MDZS) AND how the world of mdzs and its jianghu is so specifically and purposefully different than the typical jianghu you'd find in a wuxia (taking its primary influences from Jin Yong and Gu Long) that it has to be a purposeful departure against genre convention (I have a meta post about this somewhere in me that I have half written and I want to scream about it later when I have more braincells) and it's just!!!
it's so validating to know that THIS IS TRUE.
idk!!! idk!!! I'm just so excited!!!
