I will also add that unless things have changed in the last couple months and I didn’t see any announcements I’m pretty sure that Viki does not pay translators and that it’s a voluntary thing.

So if we are talking about not supporting particular platforms, Viki is also not absolved of poor subtitle business practices, and is I’d argue more exploitative than using machine translations if it is still true that they aren’t paying for the human labor of subtitling shows.

@watchthisqqq I hate generative AI a bunch, but I will say that machine translation software has existed for a long time and the first step I would take if I were to be incredibly opposed to steaming platforms using machine translations would be to contact them through whatever customer service feedback forms they have available before jumping straight in to a boycott. I think it is far more productive and helpful, especially on smaller and entirely queer platforms like Gaga, to inform the company of your concerns around the use of machine translations before taking further actions like @twig-tea mentioned.

I don’t know that one person’s commentary is going to make a difference, but it might, and it is certainly helpful in some regard to hear a consumer give them feedback like you mentioned @my-rose-tinted-glasses re: not wanting subtitles in a language if they aren’t going to make sure that it’s actually good.

But if you write to Gaga then I think it’s only fair to write to IQIYI, Viki, etc as well about their business practices. Also just to add something to what @lurkingshan said. GagaOOLaLa is, in my opinion, incredibly disrespected in the broader QL community. I’m saying that not because I have personally seen people talking shit about it in any proportion higher to the other platforms or anything but because MyDramaList, which I consider to be a decently large and well informed website that keeps track of like every Asian drama that has, is, or will be airing *and* tells you what platforms you can find it on has literally not once mentioned Gaga on their site.

I became aware through @italianpersonwithashippersheart that Gagaoolala plan on using AI for there translations in the future. My immediate reaction was to boycott

a) because I am opposed to ai in general

b) selfishly the idea that translation would become worse than they already are is ridiculous to me.

My thinking would be send them a message stating our opposition to them changing to AI. If they do not reverse that decision that we would boycott by x date. Get a general number of how many people would boycott so that they would see the financial repercussions.

What are people’s thoughts on this idea? Also do we have info on whether viki, iqiyi or other streaming sites already use ai translations? Realized that the tumblr ql community is probably pretty small. Does twitter or instagram have a larger ql community?
