There’s so much surprise on the young woman’s face. Though he’s managed to enter her room through the window, without her parents' security or the lab security witnessing him, she can’t help but to worry for his safety if he’s found. Ryan keeps insisting to her that he does not want to leave without her though. He says he knows she’s not happy there, being poked and used like an experiment, despite being with family. His final argument is that he says he didn’t meet her for nothing, which makes her let out a half-hearted laugh and reach to brush his cheek with her fingers. 

Words. Clouds and Stars. They’ve always been hard for her to express. But she’ll express herself to Ryan. Or try to.

“I blew up a man when I met you, I blew up a man a little after I met you — maybe, I should continue staying contained. Because, maybe, just maybe, you could be next, Ryan? And I, well, Ry – I couldn’t…I can’t live with that.” She swallows, looks away.

She hates it so much. The idea of her hurting him, or even her friends.

Traveling Nurse AU

The Hale fire happened but with only one death (an elderly relative). Kate's crimes starting with Derek get revealed. She goes to prison. The Argent matriarch expelled her from the Argent line, using magic that would prevent any future kids of Kate's to be considered Agents ever. Gerrard is still angry.

Still Derek was guilt ridden and withdrew from everything. Immediately graduating high school (he refused to walk) he left moving to Alaska. He attended college and got a degree in graphic and web design.

Now closing in on thirty Derek hasn't been back to California in over ten years. He makes a living doing designs from his home. That pays the bills to allow him to write. He writes science fiction detective stories under a penname.

In this universe Claudia Stilinski was a nurse before she got sick. Stiles befriended the nurses taking care of his mom since he spent the most time there with his mom, since his Dad was always working. A butterfly flapped it's wings and Stiles doesn't dream of going into law enforcement but becoming a nurse.

Since kindergarten he has always had a first aid kit in his backpack. It adds an inhaler after becoming friends with Scott. He gets into a few fights because a boy should want to be a doctor not a nurse. Until one day Cora Hale steps in and stops the bully. She ends up making them an odd trio.

Gerrard, Alphas and Jennifer Blake still tries pulling things when they are in high school. Secrets are revealed. Scott still gets bit. With an intact Hale pack most of them make it to graduation alive.

After the last several years of chaos college felt like a dream for the most part. After Stiles gets his RN license he decides he wants to travel and not settle down in Beacon Hills yet. And for the next several years he works all over the US and just going back home for his Dad's birthday.

When Cora finds out Stiles is going to be in the same town as Derek she asks him to keep an out for her disaster bi buddy. (She might be trying to matchmake a little by dropping that information)

Derek finds Stiles Stilinski annoying and obnoxious but he also keeps hanging out with him. Stiles finds Derek grumpy and hot. Derek can turn into a full wolf, something that any wolf can do with a lot of mediation.

Stiles tried petting him the first time he saw the wolf form. Derek growled in annoyance.

Borderlands: We still DO have the potential of Knoxx and Audrey I mean really that's just super funny potential and Steele is also in this area (albeit a little injured).

Hammerlock and Wainwright would adopt her on the spot I am SO SORRY LMFAO they'd only glance at her and be like "well she's in the family now."

Far Cry: Honestly if I wasn't afraid of how triggering Far Cry 5 is (and possibly even more trauma for Audrey SHE DOES NOT NEED MORE) I'd already be saying "Joseph and John Seed!" Because I have the most muse for them rn

Harlock / Leijiverse: Honestly I feel like Harlock would be a great parental figure! Ignoring the whole 'dark matter' immortality thing, being a pirate and a few other things.

Emeraldas??? Complete opposite, she'd see Audrey as the child she abandoned back on Earth (Mayu) years ago and feel guilt so she'll turn her back on Audrey unfortunately

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Anton and Oberstein is VERY "uh oh" territory because Oberstein would see the kid and either: Question why she's not in school, wonder why she's not ALREADY in the military (trust me I was blindsided when I found out there was like. A 13 yr IN THE MILITARY-) or just ignore her.

Bruno? PROBABLY adopt but don't count on it because he's a busy man and he sometimes forgets to self-care.

Bittenfeld is an immediate no because he's so brash and aggressive they wouldn't mix well!

Muckenberger would adopt on sight he can't handle orphans being orphans AND would try to keep her out of the war!

We don't look at Ovlesser though.

Reinhard and Kircheis are PERFECT to adopt her and spoil her. Especially with the Kaiser bs Reinhard has, man has a lot of money. Unfortunately though she'd have a LOT of expectations (as well as if she was with Muckenberger) since Reinhard and Kircheis are wonderful, amazing commanders and well. She'd need to fill that expectation.

Kesler my SON he would adopt her, make sure she was safe and make sure that while she is kept away from the war, she at least has a father figure in her life. Reinhard and Kircheis as well as Muckenberger can try but they're all a mess compared to Kesler and his AMAZING parental skills. Personal hc ofcofc

Schenkopf we do not let her anywhere near Audrey. Not because of anything HORRENDOUS but she doesn't need to see a man constantly hit on her adopted parents. And he's a bad parent LMFAO

Macross Frontier: SOOOO Sheryl would be amazing if Audrey wanted to yk ASPIRE to be a singer (like replace Ranka with Audrey type thing LMFAO) but past that??? Once again it's not the greatest for potential writing

Robotech: Oh my man Gloval KNOWS how it was to grow up pretty lonely. Man grew up on vodka and stale bread in his childhood he would adopt Audrey and well, the SDF-1 DOES have a civilian habitat on board so he can def keep care of her. And not him? Someone else on board could totally do it!

Claudia is the best aunt Audrey would ever get (with her boyfriend Roy ofc) and there is no changing my mind that they wouldn't spoil her badly. Roy can even teach her to fly and that's more threatening to me than anything else I've written so far LMFAO

Lisa would be atrocious. Both because she doesn't like kids and finds them a nuisance but also because she's a woman focused on work and nothing else. Sorry Audrey ;-;

Breetai, Khyron and Exedore; all 3 don't know what the fuck Audrey is, wants, but depending on verse they're either seeing her as a threat or just ignoring her because they really don't know what the fuck to do with her

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion: The consensus from all of them is similar to Azur Lane, in that it just WOULDN'T work out. Extra worse because they're spaceships, not ships like in Azur Lane.

Space Battleship Yamato: Dessler would honestly see her and wonder why she's not in the military and then, depending on verse, hurt her because she's Terron and he's lost his gd sanity so that's a no-go LMFAO

Domel would treat her the best. He's had a kid before, he knows to be gentle and stuff with them. Plus bird. Who doesn't want bird??? Would keep her out of the military, no child soldiers with him around no sirree

Berger is the weirdest older sibling platonic relationship because he's so depressed but tries to be strong about it ESPECIALLY with her around. Mans has a DEATHWISH but I love him because he's just a lil guy who I adore so much, probably has the most potential ngl

Heiny and Wolf are ignored for this experiment-

Dietz already has a kid, Melda so he would probably just adopt her on the spot too and not even blink an eye until two days later because he was apparently drunk when he just adopted her (he was sober, he's lying)

Gimleh we ignore because he would either: Indoctrinate her into the Blue Shadow, put her in as a child soldier, or kill her. There's no in-between.

VANCE has such pops material. Literally his nickname (thank you Odyssey) so whether she'd like it or not he'd be the most natural to call a dad because of his personality. Would also keep her out of the military and would spoil her

The Talans Ghader and Velte are also ignored for this experiment-

Sanada!!! He has a Borderlands verse as well as lotgh verse but she'd hate him JUST on those verses so we stick to sby verse; which is that while he's quite stoic, serious and focused on work. He'd probably make her a lab assistant and run her through the ropes and while he would give others a stern word here or there he's much more 'gentle' in his weird science sense with her

Admittedly, Claudia should have known Ro was bad news the moment her father didn’t like him. Though her father had married her mother, and that alone with terrible judgment, with everyone else, he knew when a person was someone who would be loyal or if that someone would betray you. Her father had told her immediately upon meeting Ro that Ro had the loyalty of a horny dog, and that he would never change. 

Claudia at the time, really thought her father was just trying to break her and Ro up because Ro was older than her. But it turns out, as their marriage went on and Ro cheated again and again - despite the fact that she stayed loyal - that he was just as disloyal as Claudia’s father said he was. 

Angry over the realization, Claudia got a little too drunk one day, and waited for her husband to get home. And when he arrived, she pointed her finger and asked, “Do you enjoy playing with people’s hearts? Do you enjoy making me look stupid?” Her eyebrow raised as she pointed at him and furrowed in her brows. 

“Dia, darling - it’s not what you think. I’m not trying to make you look stupid, I’ve simply got a wondering eye and no sense of impulse control – and you do tell me as much often,” he told her, tilting head, arms out to manipulate her with a hug. 

She glared at him, and still kept her index finger up to angrily point at him, again. “You’re doing it now. You think I’ll crawl back to you, instead of moving on. But, news flash, Ro - I am fucking moving on. I met a woman. Her name is Cynthia,” she bit back, smirking to herself, despite her anger towards him. “So, I am not just yours anymore. I am also someone else’s.” 

He paused and looked flabbergasted, opening his mouth to speak, before closing it because nothing came out. And when it did, he just laughed in disbelief and amusement and said, “You’re lying. You have to be. A woman? You’ve been so busy with the new exhibit that you barely had time for me.”

She shrugged. “I barely had time for you, because I was frequently found with her. The two of us met at a bar crawl, and she visits me at the museum quite often.” Cloud nodded, and watched as Ro’s head looked like it was going to explode. 

“I thought I was the only person for you?” he questioned, still looking perplexed and like he was about to go into manipulation mode. 

“I thought that, too. But apparently, I lose interest when people are dishonest with me multiple times.” She was drunk so she had to stop talking, and took a seat. “Hope you’re ready to sign our divorce papers sooner rather than later.” The wink she gave him was awful because she winked with both eyes due to being drunk and tired. “Cause they’re coming, baby.”

The Lost Boys, aka Ryan’s rag tag group of young people, have become like family to Claudia Blake. They have taught her simple things about the world - like how to dress how she wants, what movies are the best, and who to avoid - that her parents avoided for the purpose of keeping her safe and calm, and inexplosive.

And even during times where it appears she’s about to blow someone up accidentally with her powers, they all have a way with reaching out for her gloved hands and calming her before anything dangerous happens. They also make her laugh, and occasionally cry from things she’s experiencing for the first time. Claudia’s thankful for them and enjoys staying in their apartment when she’s not being pulled back home to her parent’s mansion.

“Do you know how invincible I feel when I’m around your friends?” Claudia asks Ryan as they lay in his twin-sized bed, staring at the ceiling and holding hands as the projector projects a fake yet realistic look of the galaxy.

“Pretty damn invincible, I’m guessing by the smile you have on your face when you’re around them?” he replies, giving her hand a quick squeeze. “What makes you bring that up though?”

There’s silence and Claudia can hear their breathing, and it’s comforting to her. Usually silence is traumatizing to her and linked to terror, but with Ryan, it means they can just enjoy each other’s space.

“Well, I got really upset the other day - you know when my parents picked me up? and, well, I considered going to that mysterious person who takes steals powers in the city... I don’t know her name, but I got a number from someone who knows her. But, anyways, I was going to meet up with her so I’d be powerless and maybe my parents would want to leave me alone. But then, Arya stopped me and Slater was with her, and uhm, they both talked me out of it. Made me feel like I could take on the universe.” She went quiet again after that and Ryan turns away from the ceiling to look at her.

“Wow, no wonder you brought that up,” he says calmly, “But I’m glad you didn’t give up your powers. I think they’re cool. They’re part of you. I like you. Even that part of you.” He makes a thoughtful hum after that and Claudia turns to face him.

“I like you too,” she says after a beat of silence. “A lot.” And then she kisses his nose, thinking that she really could take on the universe with Ryan and his friends if she set her mind to it.

Cloud takes a bite of her dinner and thinks hard on his words. “I never said you were bad. I’ve just heard things about you that were… questionable,” she expresses to him casually, before taking a sip of her wine as she attempts to read the stoic man before her. He looks like he’s taking this seriously, but it’s difficult to tell since she doesn’t know him well enough to read his body language in entirety. Right now he’s a bit of a puzzle, and all she knows from asking around is that he’s a bit of recluse hermit when he wants to be, and when he’s not he’s a bit of a hoe. Which, she does not mind. If he wants to see other people during their arrangement, she’s fine with it as long as she gets to see people, too.

And while she’s willing to go through with this arrangement her parents set up between them, she’s not entirely sure if she wants to jump into it without asking questions. She does not want to be involved with someone who’s been described in a way that makes her wonder if he’ll be a nightmare to be around.

“Like, I’ve heard you stay out all night. I’m absolutely fine with that, but I do need to know you won’t make me look foolish. If you see people while we’re together, you will need to do it lowkey. As I will do the same, if that’s the case. Also, the whole double life as a whole. You don’t have to tell me what you do, I will just need the occasional phone call or text to make sure you’re not dead in a ditch somewhere,” she says casually, with an attempt to not sound like she’s hounding, “I mean, Gotham is an incredibly sketchy place and you do have a target on your head simply by being who you are.”

She shrugs lightly and takes a sip of her wine. “So, no, I don’t think you’re bad. I just think there are things about you that are confusing, and you’re difficult to read. I’m not a fan of that typically, but I want to make my parents happy and I’m willing to make this arrangement work because of it. But are you, is what I want to know before jumping into this?” Her eyebrow arches as her lips stain the wine glass and she places it on the table. “Are you?” Which, she probably won’t receive honestly, but it’s worth a shot.

 ‘Just not much time.’

 Creative Writing Club

Discuss the art of creative writing and share and critique short stories.

 That was more up her ally! But she was sure Mr. O’Neill was involved somehow. ‘If nothing else, though.’

Anime Club

 ‘No.’

  Daria went through the entire list. The number of actually interesting activities, including the Creative Writing Club, were very few.

 There was the Lawndale Lowdown, if she was able to chose a column which suited her. There was also the History Club, but she wasn’t sure what sort of history they talked about. Or there was the French Club. Her admittedly poor French could use some practice.

 ‘One of those,’ she decided.

  Flying into Ny Berk, Pete saw that the island was rather mountainous, with most of the coastline consisting of cliffs. “There hardly seems to be any place for a ship to land,” he commented.

 “There is a small harbour on the north shore,” Myka said. “Apparently it takes very skilled navigators.”

 “I don’t doubt that.”

  “Welcome to Ny Berk.”

  Daphne followed the others into the Lanes basement. It looked much like many other basements she and her friends had investigated over the years. However, it was rare that a band had their practice space in a basement. Most often they practiced in a garage or a spare room. There had even been a couple who practiced in an attic. “Mystik Spiral?” she asked.

 “But we might change our name,” Jane’s brother, Trent said in respond.

 “It sounded interesting,” Daphne said.

 “Well, it was something Daria said,” Trent said.

 “Really?” Velma asked.

She and Tuvok again fired on the starship's sheilds.

  “Aft sheilds down to 75%.”

 “Prepare to fire torpedoes.”

“Aye.”

  “They are preparing to fire torpedoes,” Tuvok reported. “Prepare to fire simultanously.”

 “Has this ever worked?” Katelyn asked.

 “Not very often,” Tuvok responded. “But we have to attempt it.”

 “Ready?” Daniel asked.

 “I'm not, but I'm going to try.”

 “Locking on,” Katelyn said.

  Kathiannah fired torpedoes. Katelyn and Tuvok then fired phasers fast enough to hit the torpedoes just outside the sheild envelope.

 As Tuvok had intended, the explosions knocked down the shields.

 “Has to be a very unlikely shot.”

 “1 in a thousand,” Tuvok commented.

  The two shuttles then landed in Kathiannah's shuttlebay. It was a tight squeeze, with the other shuttles already there.

Claudia’s name means “sick” and it has always bothered her because when she was a kid she was obsessed with name meanings. The thing is, I named her after “Claudia Qu.inta”, who was a Roman matron who saved herself from false accusations. I created her pretty young so like my brain latched onto the name after reading the name.

Daviau comes from “David” and is French like Claudia’s adoptive parents. I had actually asked my friend to come up with something French because we were writing sisters. So she chose it and it stuck. Pretty sure Cloud’s surname was Vladimir when I was like an edgy 17 year old though lol 🙈

I love the surname Desjardins because her father’s surname is actually different. But Richie chose Desjardins because it means to “garden” and he wants his family to flourish. And flourish this version of Cloud does. (It used to be Blake but it sounded odd so I changed it.)

I’m laughing though because while Claudia Daviau hates her name meaning, Claudia Desjardins is like “That’s because I’m pretty fucking sick” In, of course, the cool slang way lmfao. and it’s like … okay sis. But yeah.

Bex's Book Corner #18 - Part 3

This is the 3rd and final installment of my recent reads roundup. In this section, I'll be covering my two most recent sci fi reads:

Queen’s Hope by E.K. Johnston

Get ready for some high quality heartbreak, Star Wars fans!

The Padme trilogy concludes with Queen’s Hope – a book that takes place in the aftermath of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. We find Padmé and her loyal handmaidens pulled in different directions.

Padmé has just gotten secretly married to Anakin Skywalker. Sabé, her decoy from The Phantom Menace, is pursuing her own goals for the first time – that is, until Padmé ropes her back in to be her stand-in in the senate. 

Johnston has done an outstanding job writing the relationships between Padmé and the handmaidens. It’s been amazing to see how they’ve developed through this series, together and apart. To think Sabé only appears in one movie – and it’s impossible to tell young Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley apart. Sabé finally gets to be her own person, but it’s also very heartbreaking because their lives start to move in different directions and… well, we all know what happens in the final movie.

Seriously though! My heart is broken. I loved this SO MUCH.

Their relationship is so important. With the success of the Padmé trilogy and the recently released Obi-Wan Kenobi series, I think it’s high time we brought Keira Knightley back for a Sabé spinoff!

2. Thronebreakers by Rebecca Coffindaffer 

There’s something deeply satisfying about a sequel that sticks the landing.

Coffindaffer’s first book, Crownchasers, leaves us with an obvious villain, but I had a feeling there was a bigger bad lurking in the wings. Thronebreakers proved me right in the best possible way.

It’s harder to review this one without spoiling the first book, so let’s recap. The heirs of the prime families participated in a contest to be the next ruler of their planetary empire. The first to find the imperial seal is declared the winner. Our heroine Alysa Farshot isn’t interested in being empress, but she’s an heir, so she has to participate. Things went sideways at the end of the first book and the wrong person ended up on the throne.

Book 2 picks up where we left off: Alysa faces off against the enemy, only to realize there’s something even more sinister at work. The stakes have been RAISED. The theory I had after book 1? I WAS RIGHT!!!

This book was a masterclass in following through on the promise of the first book. The plot dominoes are set up in the first half, and the author knocks them down in the second half. The result is a deeply satisfying conclusion to a high octane adventure.

I loved this duology SO MUCH. I’ll be looking forward to whatever Rebecca Coffindaffer does next!
