Welp, that was an interesting day!

Morning: wandered into voice chat in Selena Price's Twitch stream. Did I make sense? Probably not. At least I have an Aussie accent.

Afternoon: tried to finish editing my latest chapter for Wyll's Gate. Traive barged in and stole my concentration, though, and I had an epiphany on how to fix his upcoming Tav/Wyll fic. Did that.

Now: Time for dinner, a glass of wine, and getting back to editing Wyll's Gate. The timeline keeps stretching on these chapters, sorry, but I'm so excited for these next couple - they'll be utter bangers once I've whipped them into shape.

I have a question for people who’ve watched Supernatural. Are there episodes where there’s size changing going on?

I ask because I already got a vibe from The Boys season 3 that someone on the writing staff was not indifferent to macro/micro shenanigans. I recognize it when I see it in the wild because I have some of this affliction (although none of the foot crushing genre that seems extremely popular with the majority male demo- whether hetero or gay). So between the dicksplosion and the HL crushing Termite underfoot, it was way too bloody for my tastes and I thought okay, maybe they’re just accidentally gifting that community some scenes.

But watching Gen V, it’s so much more blatant. Yes, I get it, The Boys S3 is a parody of the Antman-killing-Thanos ideas fans had for MCU, and Gen V S1 is a dig at beauty standards and bulimia, yada yada. But at the point the character also gets big from eating and smushes another character into the ground, I no longer think this is being written with both hands on the keyboard, iykwim.

So is this Kripke? Or some other writer in common between the two shows?

the reason i find phonetically writing out accents tacky at best and xenophobic at worst

it treats the author's accent as normal, the default. that's plain english with no need to indicate any way the words as spoken deviate from the words as written. everyone ELSE'S accents warrant being denoted by the spelling, but we don't need to change OUR text, we're just speaking Regular.

do you say "axe" instead of "ask"? do you combine the words 'would you' into 'wouldjoo'? do you swap whole-ass consonants to pronounce "comfortable" as "comfterble"?

chances are you do at least one of those things; i certainly do. none of those is 'correct' english; none of those is pronouncing the word as written. if you spell out accents other than your own, do you also spell out those pronunciations in yours? why is that?

i'm not saying not to drop a g for a rootin' tootin' US southern accent. i'm definitely not saying to misrepresent the actual words a person says when those differ because of their dialect. if someone says 'me' instead of 'my', write it that way! changing their words to conform to your version of english is just as bad, if not worse.

i am saying think about what you're doing. think about whether you really need to indicate someone shapes their vowels differently from you or whether you're just othering them while presenting yourself as neutral. if the reader is aware the speaker has an accent a light hand is probably sufficient.

at the very least please pump the brakes before you end up with hagrid from harry potter. ever notice that mcgonagall is also scottish but her accent isn't written out? it's almost like the less educated person is more heavily affiliated with their accent. that's the kind of thing that happens when you don't think about this stuff.

X-men apocalypse au where In1997 apocalypse is freed by unwitting arclogists, he arrives in Cairo and learns about humanity, belivng humanity is beyond help, he decides to destroy the world and remake it in his own image, deciding to recruit four mutants as his horseman, meanwhile, Warren Worthington lll a.k.a, angel, a member of the X-men, goes missing from the xmansion’s med bay after brutal encounter with bigoted humans who had tried to clip his wings, upon seeing the strange figure in the room, Warren screams for help, for his teammates, but by the time anyone gets there , he’s gone, unknown to anyone, he was kidnapped by apocalypse , subjected to apocalypse’s sick exmperments, turned into his first horseman, his archangel, he comes upon another mutant named caiban, turning him into his second horseman, he sends archangel and caiban to kidnap his third horseman, another member of the X-men named Remy lebeau, who had been sent out to help look for angel in new orelens, remy is shocked at what has happened to angel, he tries to call for rogue, who he had been searching with, but archangel stops him, as he fights he tries to ask angel when he was and what on earth happened to him, archangel talks being horseman of apocalyse, and says gambit will soon become one too, but Remy still has no idea who that is, soon he is overwhelmed by archangel and caiban, he is knocked out and taken by caiban and archangel back to apocalyse, just as rogue arrives, she tries to take Remy back from them, she is horrorifed at what happened to warren, she tries to snap Warren out of it, but he simply sends his Metal feathers at her, after dorging them, she tries to follow them, but loses them, she then flys back to New York, and to the mansion to warn the X-men, meanwhile in Cairo, Remy wakes up restrained to a lab table, and archangel and caiban staring emotionless at him, then as if his luck couldn’t get any better, a hulking blue being with wires in him comes into the room, he induces himself as apocalypse, a god of mutant kind, gambit doesn’t buy it, he asks apocalypse did to angel apocalypse says he freed angel, freed from the restraints of empathy and mercy, he has brought Warren to his fullest power, and he will do it to gambit too, he expains who he is, and his plans, his belief that humanity is weak, and needs to brought to it’s knees into to heal, gambit’s only response is spit in his face, apocalyse angrily, but calmly wipes the spit from his face. He tells gambit he will be his horseman of death, how he would enhance his powers so he could not only create kinetic energy, but the ability to commend death as well, the ability to kill with nothing more then presence, gambit tries to keep apocalyse distracted, tries to pick the lock to his restraints, he yells that the X-men will stop him, that they will save both him and Warren, he tells apocalyse he’s insane, but apocalyse only says that he will soon agree, archangel tells apocalyse that Remy was trying to get out of his restricts and takes what gambit was using to pick the locks, Remy begs angel to break out of it, but archangel remains emotionless, apocalypse tells his horsemen to get him ready for the transformation, archangel and caiban bring Remy to apocalyse’s machine, the machine that will turn him into a horseman, Remy desperately tries to escape them or jog Warren’s memory, but both are fails, he is strapped to apocalyse’s machine, still begging Warren to help, to do something, but archangel does nothing, apocalyse powers up his machine, Remy felt unimageble pain, feeling his mind and body ripped apart and put back toguhgter, according to apocalypse’s twisted design, he could feel apocalyse’s sick ideology being pounded into his skull, by the time he comes out, he is barely the same person he was, Remy uses what little of his free will he has left to look in a nearly refrective surface, he was disgusted by apocalyse had done to him, instead of his normal brown hair, he now has ghostly white hair, instead of his normal amber eyes with black isises,

It's Wednesday, even if I almost forgot, so happy WBW! Where would you most like to live if you were transported into your own setting?

Honestly, no contest, i'd live in Uslaria, where my current WIP takes place! The climate and local flora/fauna are mostly based off of the PNW where I'm from so the weather would be my speed. The part of the country Uthyr lives in is pretty similar in climate to Southern Oregon, more specifically the Rogue Valley, so I think I'd rather go farther north in Uslaria and as close to the coast as possible. If I could pick exactly where, it'd be on the outskirts of Crescaeya in a small little house on a cliff facing the ocean. Besides the weather, the country is very peaceful, is home to many animals both magic and mundane, and for a human kingdom, life is slow and easy. The main downside is that outside of two large cities, there's just not a lot of civilization, and I'm too pretty for manual labor.

Failing that, I'd want to live in the Ixoryn Marshes, which are largely based on the Louisiana swamp lands. (Running joke in canon is that whoever named the Marshes didn't know the difference between a marsh and a swamp. The meta part is that I was that whoever. I came up with the name as a teen, but didn't realize the landscape I envisioned at the time was a swamp not a marsh, and at this point I like the name too much to change it, oops.) Can't take heat or humidity well, but the Marshes are famous for their food and--just like when I visited a friend in Thibodaux last year--I decided I would be willing to live on the sun for easy access to boudin, crawfish, and po boys. I think if you dropped a group of Cajuns into the Marshes they'd invent the best damn cuisine in the world with access to some of the weird magical critters running around in there. The main downside to the Marshes is worshiping Nybiegh, the God of the Silver Moon, is not really an option and there's no less than 15 things in any given square mile of the country that can kill you. I do stay up at night dreaming about the fantasy food that would come out of here though.....imagine.

i looove how girly astarion and gale are… like i fully believe they have catty arguments where one of them runs out of rebuttals and says WELL YOU’RE FAT and the other man just gasps and rips one of his expensive blouses. when they arent arguing they have a big chaise lounge called the fainting chair and they have to take turns with it

That wasn’t me saying those things, of course. It was the rat in my brain. I typically like to think of myself as a puppeteer in control of all my thoughts, even the crazy ones. I like to identify myself only with my superego, and that’s not to say that I have an oversized sense of self - which is also true. But the part of my brain that is judging everything as if it is a third-party observer.

Artist Mark Brooks (who's currently giving us a masterpiece collection of Disneyfied X-Men, please look at his Insta) did the cover art for that homestretch of X-Men Legacy (aka X-Men 1991 with a rebrand name) from #260.1-275. And I just adore it.

It's still so funny to me that officially Rogue chose Wolverine's side in Schisms. But then made a call that had Logan so mad he wouldn't look at her. So the book explored a little X-dynamic on the side at the school without disturbing the Wolverine & the X-Men plots. And when the time came for the big AvX thing the team had to sit it out, but also get one big fight at least for the tie-in and then Rogue was shoved to another planet for a bit. Only to come back for some "oh no the Phoenix Five aren't the good guys, better help the Avengers now" and then to finally break up with Magneto (in a story with a gay man dying impaled in rubble, because those two have the best date scenery start to finish iykyk).

That story with Weapon Omega and Mimic is fantastic. Oh, the homoerotic subtext in those pages is peak X-Men content. And everything is always about empathy, second chances, redemption, finding your own way, breaking free of other people's expectations. Christos Gage was allowed to write a very quiet story. Despite then having to shove in AvX (of course the Avengers looked like extra dicks, but I blame editorial decisions; sorry the escalation was on She-Hulk, I love Jen, she did nothing wrong).
