illario as the grandchild that is most like caterina is something i'm loving to chew on. the grandson that took her lessons to heart the most. kill anyone who sees your face and knows your name, "we are not revolutionaries", the first out of the two to prioritise the contract. power at any cost, and the only one to lean into the unnecessary abuse that their grandmother told them was tradition. why is anyone surprised he allied with the venatori? and then there's illario's considerable skill in infiltration and manipulating any mark, he has always had the charisma that lucanis lacked. illario isn't attached, he has/can/will use someone and immediately drop them; "that does free me from promises i don't intend to keep". he can lie about how much he cares so well that he fools a magister into believing he loves her. he kills zara without hesitation to cover his own tracks, meanwhile lucanis blindly promises a young girl in the middle of a siege that he will help her find her father. even the lessons about family stick with him, and in this entire messy power struggle, he never actually orders anyone to directly kill caterina or lucanis, not until he's backed into a corner.

and even after all that. despite even lucanis believing illario should be first talon, lucanis is still the better killer. illario is not strong enough to be the brutal assassin caterina needs him to be. so when lucanis seems to fill the role his mother left, grief and love for her dead heir apparent remains, and any of the other qualities caterina needs in her next talon doesn't matter. whatever his mother was, lucanis has to be. what illario does doesn't matter, because he will always be second best to caterina's memory of her favored daughter.

i just covered dick but fjkdlsjfkdsjfks jkl tim drives me crazy in a different direction,,, i think most of bruce's orphan collection would be fairly good at hiding their freak flag until they've got you more-or-less trapped, but not tim. he's bugging your phone day one. he's got cameras in every room of the apartment mysteriously offered to you by the wayne enterprise affordable housing initiative. he's leaving board meetings without warning to watch live footage of you masturbating and wishing he was your hand. and it never occurs to him to actually talk to you until jason pulls him aside to be like 'i know i'm a criminal drug lord but this is felony shit dude'. his greatest desire in life is to stare at you unblinkingly from the other side of a small room and unfortunately that rarely ends well for you.

Stanley and Sixer!

Sent to Gravity Falls to live with a great aunt they barely know with no warning, the twins have… slightly different reactions. Stanley is not at all impressed with the idea of kicking it around some backwater town for a summer when they could've been working on the Stan o' War. Stanford is also put-out, but is optimistic about finding fun in documenting interesting things in the woods. Their attitudes pick up even more when they discover a spellbook lost in the woods that teaches them that Gravity Falls is full of weirdness and adventure. They both want to discover the two Authors of the spellbook, though each has a secret favorite author they want to meet in particular.

Stanley: With his brash yet suspicious personality, he finds his fun in looking for monsters in the woods with the hopes of beating them up and making a name for himself--a stance the creatures of Gravity Falls don't appreciate much. He feels a growing distance between himself and Stanford and has no idea what to do with it or how to talk to his twin about it, so he masks it with bravado and charm. He constantly thinks of ways to make himself important and interesting, which often blow up in his face. Thinks he's cooler than he really is.

Stanford, aka Sixer: Once he realized that Gravity Falls is a town full of weirdness, Stanford was thrilled by the thought that it might be a blessing in disguise, a place to finally branch out and make friends who won't run once they see his hands. He really, really wants to make friends with anomalies, like one of the sirens that supposedly live in the lake or the boy who claims to be a psychic. This goal combined with his trusting nature might lead him down dangerous paths. At least he has Stanley to help him! Though lately it feels like Stanley has been less honest and more clingy than usual, and it's starting to grate on him...

While Dipper and Ford are paralleled in the show, I feel like Ford as a child would have an attitude that parallels Canon Mabel's better in terms of inciting the plot. They're both enthusiastic to the point of being Too Much, intense, and often convinced they're right above what others think, and I just feel like him having a quest to find friends takes the place of Mabel's quest for a boyfriend very well. Meanwhile this Stanley has the skeptical but investigative attitude of Canon Dipper, and I could see him being the type to want to prove himself a la Dipper vs Manliness, provoking people he really shouldn't provoke in the name of showing who he can be.

So I love Dandadan actually because through those first seven episodes I couldn’t stop repeating to myself “Wow Momo is so fucking cool” like she’s such a genuine badass. My shounen senses were primed for her to just get saved over and over again, maybe just helping out every now and then but no SHE’S the one doing the majority of the saving. She and Okarun both feel like real people and they’re setting up a sweet and genuine romance that doesn’t feel creepy. The voice acting is also so good like she is SCREAMING out here.

Usually when an anime has two protagonists and one is a female she feels like a passive observer just getting swept along for the ride even when they’re supposed to be “tough” it fades away or they are made lesser to make the male lead look better. But Momo and Okarun actually work together!!! They both act like human people!!!! Including the ugly parts with Okarun’s avoidance tendencies and Momo regretting when she does lash out because she knows she’s in the wrong. And they talk about it after she does!! It comes with a healthy dose of “teenagers are kind of mean because they’re still maturing” which is normal and amazing to see.

This anime is healing something I didn’t even realize was broken when I found myself not having to cringe away from little moments that make me uncomfortable. There is a bit of fanservice going on (thanks grandma) and yes I get episode 1 starting off as a bit much for people but honestly, genuinely, did you think aliens WEREN’T going to try and probe someone in the Alien Ghosts Anime TM. Kidnapping humans and cows for experimentation is what they’re most famously known for. You are meant to be uncomfortable and weirded out by this episode. An episode that ends when she unlocks fucking psychic powers and blasts that alien through the wall of a SPACESHIP like hello??

Momo Ayase is that character you give a gun to if you want to shorten the book by half and the author gave her one in the form of psychic powers.

my Stephanie Brown hot take is that she should get mad bitches now that she's single in comics. Yes yes shipping BUT the one time she had sex she was punished by the narrative via teen pregnancy. I think she should be allowed to have as much sex as she wants with zero consequences. Could be a lot of sex, could be a little. Point is she should get to do it without getting narratively baby trapped this time. she should get them pregnant, actually.

MERCS AND PRAISE

scout: scout is acutely aware of the fact that he needs a lot of praise. he realizes that he does need the outside affirmation that he’s doing good. he’s doing the right thing. and because he knows that, he gives himself a lot of praise, and he doles out a lot of praise in return. the team has come to learn that he does need a lot of praise to feel useful, so they keep it in their minds to thank him when they ask things of him. the only person this doesn’t work for is medic. scout is too aware of the man’s trickery. he’s nice to have around when you really feel like shit, he’ll throw a party because you remembered to brush your teeth.

soldier: getting praise from soldier is a high honor. soldier can acknowledge when he is bested, and will normally still insult you as he acknowledges his loss. so if soldier is offering up genuine praise, know that you, or whoever is getting the praise is kicking absolute ass. in whatever you’re doing. you are exceeding soldier’s standards so much that he is blown away. you’re blowing jane doe away. literally. he is killbinding from how good you are at what you’re doing. he’s literally dead. give him a minute, he’ll be back. and he’ll be so in awe that his death did not affect you kicking absolute ass that he will be blown away again.

pyro: pyro realizes it’s the small wins that keep the team, and themselves, mentally sane. as mentally sane as they can be. pyro is the most outward and generous praiser. they will stop in everyone’s room and give them a thumbs up, because they want their team to know that pyro thinks they’re super cool. even when they’re running on twenty minutes of sleep and readjusting to having functional limbs. even if they got their asses kicked on the field. and the team is quietly appreciative of this. sometimes they need the reminder that they’re loved, even when they choose to be their worst. this makes pyro a wonderful mediator.

demo: demo is the kind of man you want to have around when you’re failing and you know you’re failing. he’s the one you go to when you want to know you’re fucking up but that’s okay, because fuckups are loved too. he’s more the pillow you cry into. that’s his strength. his societal role is mother hen. you go to him with the booboos and the black marks against your reputation so he can tell you that you’re still pretty and smart and funny, even if you weren’t that today. if you want actual praise for succeeding, best he can do for you is a thumbs up and an “attaboy!” and a drink. he’s quite good at giving those.

heavy: heavy does not give praise. at least, it’s not something he doles out often. heavy gives accurate judgements on who you are, and he’s willing to do that for you about once a year. so pick your mental breakdowns wisely. or at least pick when you go to heavy with your mental breakdowns wisely. he has learned a “thank you” goes a long way with the team. but if you come to him with good news he will give a nod of approval. it’s not much, but the team knows that if they get The Nod then they’re doing right, at least in heavy’s eyes. so the team doesn’t really tell him anything, they just say things around him and wait for his reaction. it’s a lot easier to tell by heavy’s nonverbal communication than his actual communication because his face is so expressive, and he is just such a big canvas of a man that emotions are painted across his body. he almost can’t hide it. you can tell if the man missed a meal by the crease in his lips. same way he can’t hide a slack jaw of awe. can’t hide a grin. and he can’t hide his Nod Of Approval.

engineer: engineer gives out the most praise amongst the defense boys. he wouldn’t say he’s overbearing with it, or anything, but that a please and thank you goes a long way with these men (and pyro). and he uses that. praise and appreciation is vied for when it comes from him. they believe him when he says it. engineer’s “attaboy”s hit different. it just feels genuine coming from the texan. even if he is lying through his teeth, you wouldn’t know, he’d just seem so proud of you. he does, however, have a tell. he gets… unnecessarily hyped up when he’s giving genuine praise. he gets stuck on it. he starts repeating how impressed he is with what you’re doing. he is so thoroughly impressed with your intellect, your constitution and dedication; he will screech if you’re telling him something great. it is so hard to miss the texan’s jubilance. it’s something you would have to bear witness to before it clicks that he has probably never meant a single piece of praise he’s given you if he was below a volume level of four.

medic: if there is anything this doctor has learned, it’s that he attracts more flies with honey than vinegar. now the issue is he looks physically frightening. you’d almost wish he would give you an uninterested “that’s great” over a newspaper without looking at you. but he’s directly in your face, staring you down, his smile horridly sweet as he begins to butter you up. which is exactly what it is, if the doctor is praising you and you haven’t done anything, you’re about to earn that praise. and it’s so hard to say no to him. you’re just so obedient and you sit so still, you’re his favorite for today! Get On The Table. and if you’re really good, he ups the praise tenfold. what a perfect little thing you are! what an absolute doll! he gushes over you. rattles off your smallest achievements as he roots around inside of you. and occasionally tosses you a glance over your ribcage, accompanied with a light smile. the doctor’s favorite will be a well deserved title. you should take pride in that alone.

sniper: sniper is one of the more genuine, if not subdued appreciators of the team. he’s not waxing poetic about them, or anything, but he’s honestly quite impressed with the rag tag group of people he has come to associate himself with. and he’s willing to be honest about that! this group of men (and pyro) have supplemented and supported him in ways he didn’t know he needed. and when they remind him of that he lets them know. he appreciates them. he appreciates their dedication to their jobs. he appreciates their commitment to themselves. they’ve got some truly phenomenal qualities! they’re just also— fuckin weird. but so is he. so he can’t say anything about it. it’s hard to come to sniper for praise, because he’ll only give it if he notices your achievements himself. that is when he can give you a genuine compliment. otherwise, it’s really just a “good on ya!” with maybe a little vocal oomph.

spy: spy is only appreciative when things are done for him. though, spy is a man with such a handle on his life that it’s hard to do things to garner that appreciation. the quickest and easiest way to do this is to cook him a meal. spy doesn’t often have the time to spare to cook himself a meal. if you’re able to catch him, ask him if he has a craving for anything, then give him a time to be at the table. he’ll be there, if only to see what you whip up. if you impress him once, he may be willing to divulge some of his schedule to you. if only for more aid. and if you remain steadfast to him, eventually he will make a single statement. and he won’t repeat it, so don’t ask him to, but he’ll tell you he’s grateful for you. you’ve made his life a little easier, and people don’t do that often for him. the team really only makes small progress in this, save the doctor, who spy utilizes for his medical knowledge more than either of them realize.

pondering that falon'din is associated with an owl, and those are also messengers of andruil. and he's referred to as "winged death" which is also mentioned to be something that elgar'nan deploys against enemies. and both falon'din and andruil are referred to as venturing into dark places, where no one else can survive/wanted to go.

and ghilan'nain was not initially an evanuris, but was antagonistic towards them and making a bunch of weird creatures. she was given the offer to join them in return for getting rid of the creatures, and accepted. but with "pride stopping her hand" from destroying a few. and when asked about trusting people to share power, solas says "I know that mistake well enough to carve the angles of her face from memory."

solas also has nothing good at all to say about falon'din, mostly calling him a bloodthirsty tyrant who went so far in encroaching onto other evanuris territory that mythal had to besiege his temple and beat him up to stop him.

but he says nothing about dirthamen at all.

dirthamen is described as having gone missing unexpectedly, scaring all his followers, because they were now unprotected. and caught between their own high priest wanting to lock them into the temple forever like a cask of amontillado, and other forces outside that wanted to take their secrets by force. there is one note that a dirthamen follower defied the evanuris and took on a forbidden (probably a dragon) type of form, and was judged by elgar'nan harshly. he apparently also invented the varterral to protect his town from a high dragon? wack, but also could indicate that he had worked with ghilan'nain on making it, since she's the only one who's otherwise mentioned to be bioengineering stuff.

dirthamen has very very few surviving statues or depictions, and is more associated with falon'din than as his own independent figure in the dalish myths. even his own temple includes mosaics of falon'din. there's a few statues that are probably dirthamen, but the most striking is in mythal's section of the fade behind the eluvian, which is a statue of a hooded figure, doubled over with a giant sword sticking out of his back.
