Alan Palomo has perfected that unspecific American City Vice sound, his music shimmeringly superficial, dazzlingly nocturnal, snappily camp. His first work under his birth name is much more consistent than his old Neon Indian stuff – though potentially to a fault. World of Hassle has no pauses, no breaths, no blinks: its blare of pastiche and rollicking pace, when enjoyed all at once, can get a little tiring. Though make no mistake, take each of these cuts in isolation and they bounce like nothing else I’ve heard this year.

Alan Palomo, Musiker und Produzent hinter dem langjährigen Avant-Pop-Projekt Neon Indian, hat seine erste Veröffentlichung unter eigenem Namen angekündigt. Das Solo-Debütalbum "World of Hassle" wird am 15. September über Transgressive erscheinen.

Eigentlich sollte ein neues und viertes Neon Indian-Album erscheinen, an dem Palomo schon einige Skizzen ausgearbeitet hatte. Der selbst auferlegte kreative Arbeitsprozess erwies sich aber eher als Maulkorb und die Arbeit geriet nach einigen Wochen bereits ins Stocken. Ehe die Pandemie ausbrach, Deadlines verstrichen und der kreative Faden vorerst fallen gelassen wurde und dann endgültig ins Trudeln geriet. Palomo warf die angesammelten Skizzen und auch seinen Bandnamen über Bord und startete komplett bei null. "I said what I'd wanted to say with that project", erzählt der Texaner, der sich für die neuen Produktionen selber das Klavierspielen beibrachte und auch dadurch in unerwartete musikalische Richtungen gedrängt wurde.

"World of Hassle" ist ein lebendiges Album, das die Zuhörer*innen in eine leicht surreale Dimension voller Angst und Nostalgie entführt, in der Jazz-Funk und breitschultrige Claude-Montana-Anzüge nie aus der Mode gekommen sind und die Kälte des Kalten Krieges, die Leonard Cohens "I’m Your Man"  durchdrungen hat, nie so ganz verschwunden ist. Die 13 Songs sind ein dichter, komplexer Ort, vollgepackt mit träumerisch-absurden Charakteren und Situationen - Guerilla-Freiheitskämpfer, die in "The Wailing Mall" in einem Regenwald-Café kampieren, traurige Ex-Popstars in "The Return of Mickey Milan" oder tropische Fantasien in "Nudista Mundial ’89 (feat. Mac DeMarco)".

Die spürbare Unruhe mit ihrer bunten Klangpalette ist dabei vollständig dem goldenen Zeitalter der 80er-Jahre entlehnt, als Rockstars wie Bryan Ferry und Sting als jazzige Solomusiker durchstarteten. Das Album ist eine Parodie auf die Egotrips dieser Koryphäen, den Größenwahn Amerikas und unsere eigene Selbstbesessenheit. Aber zwischendurch wird es ist auch todernst, wenn die Weltuntergangsuhr ihren Höchststand aus der Reagan-Ära überschritten hat und die Angst vor einem Atomkrieg genauso präsent ist, wie digitale Synthesizer und schrille Saxophonsoli. Je tiefer es einen in seine eigene unheimliche Realität hineinzieht, desto deutlicher wird allerdings auch, wie sehr eigentlich die Grenzen zwischen Alan Palomos Traumwelt und unserer eigenen mittlerweile verschwommen sind.

My third greatest character flaw is the acute lack of compassion for people who smuggle exotic animals (like a serval) into a country where they are illegal (like norway) because keeping one as a pet is 'their dream' and then throw a pity party when said animal is seized and at risk of euthanasia. I'm sorry pal but you did that.

the very CONCEPT of Gustavo being Peak Performance of gnomekind and then hooking up with someone EVEN BETTER is sending me. Imagine other gnomes just being like omgomg i wish i was as hot as gus oh my goodness. And then he pops up with (a reluctant) pep in tow like 'hi everyone!' and they lose their goddamn minds over how unbelievably SPICY HOT this anxious chef is. like GUS HOW DID YOU DO EVEN BETTER

YES EXACTLY lmao it seems very silly when u put it that way djsfkskfhdsfjkh but yes that is basically it. I even drew up examples of my own homebrew gnome designs to give u some perspective

Gus is like the best example of this; hes VERY strong (strong enough to tame a creature like Brick), good facial and body hair (which is the equivalent of my homebrew gnomes viewing thick and well groomed fur as very attractive), and hes got a very sturdy body shape (not fat, but fat would be included in this too; Peppino is proof of that)

So when they see Pep theyre like ! Hes even BIGGER and he can lift Gus with no fucking problem! Like he is EVERYTHING!!!

I think a lot about the time I read this fic where it mentioned that Solar's joints would pop very loudly most of the time and how it would startle the other characters, and while it is plausible (if an endoskeleton wasn't always taken care of, damage to the joints could definitely be loud and pop like human bones), it made me wonder how fascinating it would be if it turned out that Solar had a vastly different internal build than the others in the cast and his endoskeleton could just Do That, yk?

Like, could you imagine Solar having to repair someone in the celestial family and just being like "what,, what is this. where are all your necessary parts? how are you functioning right now???" and when they ask what he means he just lists off several things that his body has and needs to function and they both just kinda have to stare at each other with different levels of "there is no damn way that's actually how you're built."

I just think it'd be fun idk LOL

My bad with the wording; the doodles I was referring to are the chapter 46 and 48 bonus sketches and the concept art from the art book and mystic code book that have been out for a while.

The chapter 48 one shows her eating a whole chicken in one bite. The chapter 46 one isn't quite as noticeable, but it's a convenient visual divide between what could easily pass as human on quick glance—the angle purposely obscuring the sixth finger on hand with how they're posed—and her feet, which is what tips Ray off in chapter 45/46 that Mujika is a demon in the dark cave Sonju constructed since she was taking great care to hide her hands from him and Emma. The angle we see them at in the water further distorts their appearance, making them look even more alien, and I think it's an interesting way for Demizu to illustrate that mental divide the Grace Field children have of her at this point to an audience experiencing the series through the volume releases. She's a demon, yes, but she's not in the same category as the one they were chased by earlier or the ones they envisioned prior to escaping in their minds, and the easiest physical reminder of that is separated from her in their minds.

This is something I've mentioned before on this post about some of my gripes with the series and how there's something to be said about the anthropocentric idea of humans being the pinnacle of intelligence demons strive to maintain and the organisms they desire to physically mimic (albeit at a larger scale and not exactly one-to-one), but it's something that I can accept given the target demographic of the series, this not being a series-original sin, and most importantly, the parasitic symbolism of those in the upper echelons of a hierarchical society needing someone beneath them in order to maintain their material comforts and define their sense of self and worth in relation to the world around them to avoid cognitive dissonance and doxastic anxiety.

The mystic code book shows her and Sonju looking even more human like a lot of other early demon designs, though there's one sketch of her barring her fangs.

Die Ankündigung wird begleitet von der Veröffentlichung der neuen Single "Stay-At-Home DJ", einem jazzigen Stück Synthie-Pop mit Elektro-Funk-Einschlag, das zusammen mit einem animierten Visualizer von Robert Beatty, dem Art Director des Albums, veröffentlicht wird. "Dies ist der Song, mit dem die ganze Unterhaltung begann", erinnert sich Palomo. "Mein Bruder und ich schrieben ihn 2019 und spielten ihn auf der letzten Neon Indian-Tour. Er signalisierte eine Richtungsänderung, nach der ich gesucht hatte, aber noch nicht wirklich wusste, was ich damit anfangen sollte. Als sich die Dinge während der Pandemie verlangsamten, habe ich ihn entstaubt und aus seinen unkontrollierbaren Auswüchsen entstand World of Hassle."
