How watching BL made me appreciate my own relationship more (in a surprising and wholesome way)

Me, watching KinnPorsche (especially the later epiaodes): awwwwww they're so in love ahh I wish I could feel like that again 😭😭😭

Me, watching MileApo videos: awwwww idc if they're friends or dating I want a relationship like that 😭😭😭

Me, as soon as I'm with my partner: omg I actually do have a relationship like that!!! Whaaaat how are we so cute???? And we communicate and talk through problems, that makes us better than KinnPorsche 💀 And we do all the cute things I wish my ships would do in canon and not just in fanfic 🙈 And we love each other so freaking much!!!

So yeah I've been seeing my relationship through the eyes of a fangirl and I'm obsessed. I ship us so hard. If we had our own romance series tumblrinas would get so invested (except maybe not my usual corner of tumblr bc it's a "straight" relationship lol)

So what I'm saying is I'm romanticizing the shit outta my own life right now and it fucking rocks

I do think Blazing Saddles handled its one depiction of native americans very poorly, and the full extent of its representation of chinese workers on the railroad is they were literally just there. not even one single speaking line. unclear if this is worse or better than the redface.

it's fucking phenomenal at lampooning antiblack racism though. extremely blatant, extremely funny satire, which is constantly and loudly saying "racism is the philosophy of the terminally stupid at best and morally depraved at worst, and we should all be pointing and laughing at them 24/7"

plus the main character is a heroic black man who has to navigate a whole lot of bullshit but is constantly smirking at the extraordinarily stupid racists and inviting the audience into the joke. the one heroic white character is a guy who was suicidally depressed until he met the protagonist and they just instantly became buds, and he's firmly in a supporting role the whole time and happy to be there. the protagonist saves the day with the help of his black friends from the railroad, and uses the position of power he was given to uplift not only those friends, but all the railroad workers of other minorities too, in an explicit show of solidarity.

anyone saying "Blazing Saddles is racist" had better be talking about its treatment of non-black minorities. it had better not be such superficial takes as "oh but they say the n-word all the time" or "they have nazis and the kkk in there!" because goddamn if that's the full extent of your critique I very seriously suggest you read up on media analysis. there is too much going over your head, you need to learn to recognize satire.

#blazing saddles #finx watches tv #finx rambles #I recognize that I'm saying all this as someone who's not black #but I am also saying it as someone with a basic understanding of race relations in the usa #and a basic understanding of sarcasm #bc it really does not take more than that to recognize what they're doing in this movie #it is NOT subtle #and it is very funny #mel brooks movies are kinda hit or miss for me ngl #men in tights is great if a bit too crass for my taste #spaceballs has great jokes but the central story lacks any real heart so it doesn't grab me #history of the world was just kind of unpleasant and then I switched it off #but blazing saddles? phenomenal #I could not stop laughing the whole way through #and the central story DOES have heart bc it's the friendship between bart and #whassisname #jim #the Kid #plus bart working out how to succeed at an impossible task #also frankly cleavon little just grounds the comedy really well even before gene wilder shows up and we get their chemistry #bc he's cool calm collected and constantly inviting the audience into the joke #but the character's not too cool to ever mess up or ever be silly #he makes bad choices and gets into bad situations and then has to get himself out of them #but it's.....oh wait duh there's a term for this already #he's the straight man #he grounds all the zany nonsense by being in strong contrast to it #and he does a great job of it!#anyway #point is I deeply enjoyed this movie and I'm glad I finally watched it

So does anybody else ever think about how Loop felt the need to demonstrate that the party's deaths wouldn't have any effect on the loops. I know I do but that's besides the point. Anyway I don't think Loop actually needs to bathe, they just like to feel included.

I'm reading posts that talk about a rewrite of G3 to make it look like G1? Honestly... Why? Let the newcomers have fun with G3. Let children and adolescents feel identified with characters that adapt to new generations.

Instead: why don't they demand a continuation of G1? What do I care about the life of a teenager between 14 and 17 years old? GIVE ME EXISTENTIAL CRISIS OF YOUNG ADULTS BETWEEN 20 AND 30!!!!

Show how Jackson and Holt try to balance their lives so that each one fulfills what they dream of! Show how you organize yourself so that Holt has rehearsals and goes to concerts!! While Jackson manages his college study schedule!! Show Cleo struggling to grow up. This girl was a princess from ancient Egypt and probably had a pre-written life. Now that is not possible. She is grateful but horrified in equal parts because she no longer knows how to continue. Damn, show Toralei trying to achieve a better future but with a background that complicates her life!! OH MY GOD!!! SHE WAS IN A JUVENILE PRISON!!! THAT FILE IS BITTING HIS BUTT IN THE WORST WAY!!

I want characters I can identify with too. But I am no longer a child or teenager, I am an adult. I want adult characters that I can empathize with, identify with, and want to hug because I know how hard it is to try to be a functional adult.

Please leave G3 alone and give me a big sequel to G1.

#doctor who #tenth doctor #martha jones #david tennant #freema agyeman #(good god. without even meaning to I went into 'psycho stream of consciousness tagging' mode. whoops)#always thinking of that one post #where OP mentions how the writing tries to make it seem like Ten looked right through Martha/etc #which is a good concept for demonstrating his grief. but also isnt what we really see throughout S3 #(not saying he wasn't a grieving MESS because he was. but he's a multi-faceted character and he can grieve AND value Martha simultaneously)#but we see such fierce protective instinct+trust; a bond between them that obviously isn't some one-sided affair #+ his clear intent to impress her/be admired and respected by her (apropos the post that inspired this sentiment)#but RTD obviously isn't the most infallible of writers #*cough* [list of reasons I cut down b/c long] *cough*#He can make Martha say “he's not seeing me/he doesn't look at me” but then you just watch with your eyes and you get a different story #It's like the opposite of when Moffat tries to make you believe someone is super important through bold claims without showing his work #instead RTD tries to make you believe Ten is functionally blind to Martha's existence while showing numerous examples of the contrary #then bring in the novels+myspace blog+cartoon that he all signed off on. Which tie together to create a canon backdrop #basically I said all of that to say this—#it's the whole reason I had to make this blog to get this sort of stuff off my chest (even if it's just for me sometimes)—#Ten not only SAW Martha—he trusted+respected+enjoyed+adored her. And it's a good thing #it doesn't cheapen his grief. I feel like people must think it does which is why I constantly see bad unnecessary takes about them #it just means that Martha was SO important to him and it's ok. they had a killer friendship outside the unrequited minutiae and it's ok #there's even a comic where 'someone' makes him believe she's Martha and he makes her change her appearance because “it's still too raw”#Just saying you don't say that sort of thing about someone whose existence you're all blasé about #Martha already gets fucked by the narrative in enough ways without people totally missing her significance in the Doctor's life #you don't have to ship them to appreciate them on a deeper level #anyway. fuck. if you actually read all of these then I'm so sorry #creating this blog has taught me that there are only like two people who feel the same way about tenmartha matters and it’s fine 😂#but if I didn’t give myself an outlet it would probably form a tumor SO there we are then

i really do admire how lando tries to not give a fuck (that 'whatever' really saddened me so much) but he actually does, and a lot.

guy doesn't even want anything absurd, he just wants the support of his team for the last fucking 4 races but no... let's just get humiliated for one point on international tv💀.

they're really stretching him thin — and i mean it in a emotional and mental wellbeing way. he is obviously inherently selfless and quite literally does not hold self-esteem, but in the last year we've seen him trying to be more sure of himself and trying to be selfish for once. the moment he does that though, he gets accused of being the spawn of satan. and then the team does everything in the world to make it harder for him.

so i really do admire him, because i literally would PERSONALLY leave the sport after this one season.

he's so much stronger than i am.

i really do think the desire to paint ten as unambiguously The Worst™️ when it comes to his relationship with martha is out of this desire to uncomplicate their relationship. to decouple them as friends and people who profoundly impacted each other’s lives. it’s just an easier narrative to swallow: that ten was Awful to her and then martha kicked him to the curb when she realized she was too good for him. easier, maybe, then dealing with the troubles of unrequited affection don’t have to be anyone’s fault, or that ten shut martha out in a lot of ways but let her in in others that he wouldn’t let any other companion near, or that they were still friends, they still wanted to see each other and be around each other, even though it was messy and sometimes hurt. you know?

'Can 2 men not just be friends?'

Sure they can, infact it's rude to assume they're anything more than that if they're real-life people. Of course, just because it's rude doesn't mean your wrong but as my dad (and lots of other people I'm sure) likes to say, 'assuming makes an ass out of you and me'.

However if the 2 men in this situation are fictional then them just being friends is entirely up to interpretation.

A straight person might just see them as friends because it's content and we all like to see content that represents us -even if they already have abundances of it.

And a queer person might see them as potential lovers, both due to being more open-minded to something like that and because, as I previously said, people like to be represented.

Now I don't mean to say straight people aren't open minded because, fact is, your sexuality does not define how open you are to things. All I'm saying is a queer person is more likely to already be open-minded due to having to realise their sexuality is different from the perceived 'normal' and having to be accepting of it.

So in conclusion, yeah 2 guys can absolutely only be best pals but that might just be how only you see it, and maybe there's something you need to look deeper into if you're getting upset at people interpreting the relationship of 2 fictional guys as romantic.
