I think it’s a little convenient for the plot that Usopp falls for this ruse, but I feel like the desperation to be useful and get the key for Robin’s sake could overrun Usopp’s sense

@cnigiri asked: ❛ i’m here to drink alone. ❜
Tumblr media Tumblr media
" oh... " there was a hint of rejection felt in the way that he had let out that one worded syllable as he had barely gone to sit down, nearest to the swordsman. for a moment, usopp wondered if his motives were read into; his intentions. seeking out companionship. but it's not like the marksman would admit to that. not now, atleast.
" i just thought....- er, well, it's a nice spot up here. everywhere else feels so stuffy. but i can leave, if you need space right now. "

Sometimes I wonder how Usopp would react if the story of Pinocchio existed in the One Piece universe. Or the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
Tumblr media
Would he be the same, or would the stories change his behaviour somehow. Would he even notice?

My Jolly Sailor Bold | Straw Hats x Reader
★ requested by @supernatural-hunter1 (see here)
Summary: You found yourself humming an old song from your childhood as you mend the sails of the Thousand Sunny Tags: sfw, platonic straw hats x reader, GN but written with F!Reader in mind, no use of y/n
Tumblr media
The Thousand Sunny floated on the open ocean, in near stillness due to the absence of the sails upon its masts.
You sat on the deck, humming a tune as old as time as you deftly thread a needle through the vast fabric draped all around you, sewing shut a large tear down its length.
A run-in with particularly violent weather had caused some damage to the ship, forcing the crew to momentarily stop in the middle of the now-calm waters for emergency repairs. Franky and Usopp were fixing the splintered railing, and Jinbe had just returned from his underwater inspection below the ship to check for leaks in the hull. Meanwhile, the others were clearing up the deck from debris brought over by the storm.
Your fingers danced upon the sail on autopilot – in and out, in and out. It had become your responsibility to mend the sails anytime damage occurred, even though you knew that Robin, with her powers, could do the job in seconds. But whenever the crew was not in a hurry, you found yourself volunteering for the task, finding it enjoyable and even calming.
Your hums slowly turned into song as you recalled the words to the tune, passed on long ago by your mother, and her mother before her, and her mother before her.
“Come all you pretty fair maids, whoever you may be.
Who love a jolly sailor that ploughs the raging sea”
The faint call of the seabirds flying high above complimented your voice, and the slow hammering of your hard-working shipwright provided a steady beat of accompaniment as you continued to softly sing,
“While up aloft in storm, from me his absence mourn
And firmly pray, arrive the day, he's never more to roam”
Some of the crew members near you had started to notice your somber melodies, hands unwittingly pausing in their tasks as if enchanted by a siren’s voice.
“My heart is pierced by Cupid
I disdain all glittering gold
There is nothing–”
You abruptly stopped singing as you became aware of the sudden silence that washed over the deck. You looked up to see all of your crewmates watching you intently with fond smiles on their faces. Heat spread to your cheeks in embarrassment at their attention, and you covered your face with the sail you were stitching.
“Oh, please don’t stop, darling!” Sanji cooed loudly, “Please let me hear your wonderful voice again!”
Brook came over to you and remarked, “What a beautifully haunting song. I’ve never heard it before in all my life – or death! Yo ho ho ho!”
The musician pulled out his violin, trying to replicate the melodies based only on what he heard you sing. You helped him by humming the notes, and with the repetitive nature of the song, it only took an instant for the maestro to pick it up.
With Brook’s silent encouragement, you joined in the violin’s serenade, singing verse after verse of the song for the small audience.
“There is nothing can console me
But my Jolly Sailor Bold.”
The crew broke out in enthusiastic claps, wolf-whistles, and cheers as the song reached its end. You laughed sheepishly and took a playful bow, before shooing everyone back to their respective chores.
The catchy song seemed to have wormed its way into your crewmates’ heads, and over the next few days, you caught some of them absentmindedly humming the tune, or singing it with jumbled words as they have yet to memorize the lyrics.
Your heart warmed whenever you heard the melodies coming from your crewmates’ lips, breathing a new life to the previously half-forgotten song – a piece of your hometown carried over to your new home.

(´ε` )♡ Thinkin about a very clingy Zoro
CW: Sort of Yandere/Nonestablished Relationship. Noncon/dubcon. Fem!Reader
He's not vocal about his clinginess, more of a action man instead. Since you were first accepted in the crew, he wasn't all that welcoming compared to the rest of the crew. Especially Sanji who quickly warmed up to you, making you your favorites dishes and drinks on the night to celebrate your arrival in the crew. You were playing around with Chopper and Usopp when you felt someone sit in the seat right next to you, looking to your left you find the green-haired swordsman chugging down a mug of beer.
His eye lazily glanced down at you with his one good eye, slamming down his mug, making you jump a bit in your seat. He raised an eyebrow at that.
"Didn't think our new crewmate would be so jumpy." He snorted, making your face heat up and your blood boil a bit. Usopp waves him off, "Oh, come on! We all can't be power monsters like you guys. I, for one, am glad to add another person who has common sense to our crew!" He quickly changes the mood by taking your hand in his and pulling you to the dance floor, Chopper following suit. The three of you hold hands in a circle and started jumping around. You quickly forgot about that small interaction with Zoro, but that entire night he never took his eye off of you.
You soon realized that Zoro is just a bit rough around the edges and mostly blunt but he doesn't mean any real harm. Still, you keep your distance mostly from him, opting to hang out with Chopper or Usopp instead. There was just something about the way he looks at you, like he was eyeing down a prey, it makes your spine shiver anytime you glance his way and catch him staring back.
Maybe he was still untrusting of you? It would make sense, he is the first mate, he gotta protect his crew after all. That was the reason you told yourself at least, to justify all the time you caught Zoro just staring at you from afar or downright following you. You gotten slowly used to his presence, not jumping up in shock anymore, anytime he would sneak up behind you or placed a hand on your shoulder.
Zoro got warmer to you, you think at least. He's usually fighting beside you in battles, or walking close by when you're out shopping in town. A hand on your shoulder, moves to a hand down your back, to a hand on your waist. You figured after a while, he accepted you as a crewmate and was just overprotective of the newcomer. It didn't help you found Zoro kinda attractive, so you let him get away with the small touching he did.
And then the touching grew into more and more, and you found yourself not being able to voiced out concerns anymore. The other crewmate, beside Luffy, often giggled when they find the two of you together. Usopp and Franky would make kissy faces when Zoro would sit next to you at lunch. Sanji looks at you dejected from time to time, muttering under his breath, "What does she even see in that moss-brain idiot.."
It wasn't like you were dating Zoro, right? He never asked you out officially, he just always been there. Always...
And, now he was getting bold with his actions. When he's sleeping on the desk, resting his back on the side of the Sunny, he would sense you walking by and trips you on purpose. Making you land on his lap and holding you there. Letting out a huge yawn over your complaining and rolling over on top of you, if you were to squirm around too much. Brook would wolf-whistle if you kept on squirming while underneath Zoro, making you effectively stop all movement.
When it's his turn on the Crow Nest, Zoro would pick you up by the scuff of your shirt, dragging you away from whatever it was you're doing and make you go up there with him. He'll do the same when he's in training at the gym. Stating that he needs "help" with his workout. Though, you're not sure what you're helping by just sitting on his chest or back while he does his reps.
If you're in town or meeting other crews, Zoro would be behind you, or he'll have you tucked into his side, arms around you tight. Glaring at anyone who ever tries to look your way. All the other crews knew that you were 'Zoro's property' and not to mess with you, unless they wanted to end up on impaled on his swords.
He knew your routine to a T, what time you woke up, takes a shower, your daily tasks. And he would just be there at your side or if he had another task to do, he'll keep an eye on you, always...
He knew what you like and dislike, picking up small snacks and trinkets for you, dropping them off on your lap without a word. But looking down at you expectingly, like cat wanting praise for being their owner an offering. Though you were unsure who was the pet and who was the owner in this scenario, as somehow you ended up in Zoro's bed.
Dragged away once again, right after a bath night with the girls too. Nami giggled at the two of you and Robin told you to "Keep it safe." as she waves you off, the both of them seemingly ignoring the confused and panicked look on your face.
He smelt like musk and sweat and you idly wondered if he showered yet or just came to bed right after the gym. He was still shirtless as he presses you right up agaisnt his chest, his head buried on top of your hair. Snuffing at your scent, a deep rumble blooms in his chest as he squeezes you a bit tighter, his biceps trapping you in this position. He lets out a deep sigh, hands traveling down your body, grabbing and pinching at your skin.
Grunting out when you start to wiggle and struggle a bit in his grasp, accidentally brushing your knees right up against his hard on. He push his own knee right between your legs, forcing them apart as he makes you grind on his thigh. The thin pajamas short you were wearing did little to help against the friction it was causing, he flexes his thighs in a way that make you mewl out and dig your nails in his shoulders.
"Good girl.." He growls out, finally addressing you like a person and not some doll.
"Zo-Zoro, what are we-Mmph!" He silences you with a kiss, speeding up his movement and moving his hands down to grope at your ass. His tongue parting your lips open and invading your mouth hotly. You moan so sweetly underneath him like this, your back arching up into him as he remove one hand to ghost under your shirt, pinching at your nipples.
He parts away from you, and from the moonlight coming thru the window. You saw Zoro's face, flushed with a light pink, and his eye starting down at you. A deep dark desire swirling within them, he grins almost manically at you.
"I knew it... I always knew you wanted me too...haha.."
He moves back a bit to get both legs in between yours so he could spread you open even more. His hands gripping the soft flesh of your thighs and pushing it to your chest. Your hands clamber to stop him, heart racing over this fast exchange of events.
"You're gonna be punished for making me wait so long.."

The thing about being a pirate is that you can’t get too attached to anything you own.
Ships go down. Ships get stolen or looted. You change crews.
Maybe pre-pirating your whole island was razed to the ground and you escaped with only the clothes on your back and your odd hat.
It’s just a known fact; don’t get too attached to anything.
THAT’S why Law keeps his Sora collection a SECRET.
He knows it’s not wise to keep on board the Tang. He knows he’s just ASKING for a leak. He keeps the comics in waterproof containers as if that will help if they sink.
Honestly rule number one of being a pirate is “don’t eat a devil fruit you dumbass you need to swim” but he’d already broken that rule so he might as well break rule number two; “don’t get attached to anything you own.”
He got very attached.
When the Tang explodes, everyone makes it out. Which makes sense, because everyone (except for Law) are North Blue survivors, MADE for those icy ocean temps. It’s great, he’s eternally grateful he can trust his crew.
He’s just a little devastated that his collection is gone.
In the mean time, while debating how to get ahold of a second ship (would Wolf be willing to come out of retirement…?), they’re stuck on the Going Luffy again. Fucking creepy ass ship. But at least Law spends enough time getting pissed at Barto that he barely misses his things.
(That’s a lie; he used to reread one comic a night. He misses them a lot).
Two weeks into their stay, though, they finally catch up to the Sunny (which of the Straw Hats was dumb enough to give Barto their vivre card?) and as soon as they’re close enough, Law realises that he made a mistake, lounging on the deck to nap.
Because, like some sort of beacon, Luffy spots him instantly as he slingshots from one ship to the other.
“TraaaaaaaffFFFFFYYYYYY”
Law makes a quick room and switches himself with Bepo, who screams as Luffy crashes into him.
“Bear!!” Luffy yells. “You’re not Traffy!”
“No! Sorry!”
Luffy gets up and brushes himself off. “Oh, Traffy! When did you get over there?”
“When you decided to try to kill me with that landing,” Law says, cracking his neck.
Luffy laughs at him.
LUFFY is made of rubber. Law is not made of rubber and he does not think Luffy ever remembers that.
“I’m so glad you guys are here!” Luffy says, ignoring the insinuation that he would commit murder. “It’s been so BORING lately! And Nami says you guys don’t have a ship right now!”
Ah yes, Nami does read the paper religiously.
“We’re working on it,” Law says, ignoring Bepo’s sad expression.
“Well until then, you should join us!” Luffy says. “Since we’re in an alliance and all!”
“We are NOT,” Law snaps, “still in an alliance! That’s finished!”
Luffy laughs. “Okay,” he says.
Law doesn’t think that okay is real.
“But anyway, Sanji says you should all come over for dinner! He’s making meat!”
Barto, who has only just appeared (probably doing his hair), perks up. “Me too, Luffy Senpai??”
“Uh,” says Luffy. “Yeah, sure!”
Barto has stars in his eyes.
Law sighs. Barto is too much to handle on the best of days.
“Fine Straw Hat,” he says. “We’ll be there.”
They eat on the deck of the Sunny, because there’s not enough room in the galley. It’s a clear, starry night.
The Sunny’s headed to Elbaf.
Law sits at the edge and watches his crew make up to Usopp and Franky. Bunch of nerds, the lot of them.
He watches Luffy, too, as he eats a mammoth portion and then immediately lays down for a nap.
Law’s spent a lot of time watching Luffy.
He doesn’t get it, how one person can have such magnetism. Luffy could have the whole world bowing at his feet if he wanted. Law knows this because he could easily count himself among them.
He doesn’t understand why Luffy continues to seek HIM out.
He’s a hell of a lot grumpier than Luffy’s acquired crew. He’s also clearly been born with bad luck; it follows him like a plague. He’s not fun to be around.
But for some reason Luffy keeps finding him and looking happy when he does.
It’s weird.
Tonight, after half the crews have retired and Luffy’s woken up from his food coma, he does the same thing. He zeroes in on Law and sidles up to him.
“Hey!” He says, sandals slapping the deck. “You’re being all weird and lonely!”
“Shut up, Straw Hat. You’re just too friendly.”
Luffy puts his hands in his hips as he laughs. “You’re friendly,” he says. “You’re just not happy about it.”
That’s incredibly wrong. Law scowls.
“Now come on.” Luffy reaches down and pulls Law to his feet. “Sanji’s doing dishes.”
“So…?”
Luffy puts a finger to his lips.
Then he makes an INCREDIBLE amount of noise as he runs across the deck with Law in tow (and protesting about it) down to the men’s bunk room.
Chopper and Jinbei are already asleep but the light is on, and Zoro’s sitting in his bunk polishing his swords. He looks at them when they enter and snorts. “Stealing from your own crew, now, Luffy?”
Luffy laughs and Law starts to protest— or question?— but he’s pulled over to the lockers and Luffy starts rummaging through one that’s full of suits and smells sickeningly of cigarette smoke.
From the bottom he pulls out a box of—
“Is that— Sora?” Law breathes. This is the GRAND LINE. How did someone get SORA COMICS?
“Yep!” Luffy opens the box and starts getting his sticky fingers ALL OVER THEM. “The bear said you love this stuff! And that you lost yours!”
“I—“ how did Bepo…?
Of course Bepo knew. Damn him. Snooping bear.
“Sanji hates these things. I dunno why he insists on keeping them.”
Luffy gives up thumbing through them and instead sticks his GREASY HANDS IN and just pulls out 90% of the stack at random.
“Here you go!”
Law gapes at him.
“Straw Hat, you can’t just—“
Luffy grins. “Sanji won’t to notice!”
There’s two comics left in the box. Sanji will definitely notice.
Still, Law could never turn down this opportunity. He takes the stack with REVERENCE, realising these are the OLD ones, the ones with the much darker plot lines and terrible airbrush coloring.
Holy shit. They’re first editions.
He may have started crying right there, if not for the fact that he’s suddenly pulled out of his thoughts by incredibly loud, incredibly fake snoring.
He looks over. Zoro’s still holding his sword oil as he “sleeps”.
If he were a better man, Law would talk to Sanji about this.
But he’s not a better man. He’s a pirate.
Law makes a room big enough to reach the Going Luffy and reaches out with his free hand, grabbing Luffy.
He switches them with a Luffy statue from his own “guest” room.
Luffy laughs as Law lets go. “That’s so cool, we should prank people,” he says.
“Later,” Law says. He sits down on the floor in front of his hammock and starts carefully shuffling through the Sora.
Honestly he’s so caught up in finding out what volumes are there that he almost forgets he brought Luffy with him until the captain reaches out from next to him and points at one of the covers.
“Hey that looks like Sanji’s brother!”
Law rolls his eyes and starts talking about how it couldn’t possibly be whoever Sanji’s brother is because Sora came out when HE was a kid and Sanji’s too young for that, and anyway Straw Hat don’t you know anything about the LORE?
He talks about the lore.
He talks for a LONG time about the lore.
And the worst part of all is that Luffy pays attention for all of it, nodding like he’s listening.
(He can’t possibly be)
(But that’s okay)
When Law is done going through each comic and explaining the plots in detail, he realises just how much he’s forced down Luffy’s throat.
He starts to apologise but then he looks up at Luffy and sees him grinning.
“We should’ve taken all of them,” Luffy says. “You clearly care about them a lot.”
Law… blushes. Gets bright fucking red. “It’s a hobby,” he says. “It’s not important.”
“But you like it,” Luffy says.
“And that makes it important.”
Law stares at him.
He has the unnerving urge to kiss him.
“Straw Hat…”
Luffy leans forward, eyes wide.
Shockingly, he does what Law would never follow through on.
He kisses him.
HE KEEPS HIS EYES OPEN, THOUGH. LAW DOESN'T LIKE THAT.
Law reels back after the initial kiss. “LU-YA CLOSE YOUR EYES WHEN YOU KISS SOMEONE.”
Luffy pouts. “No! I wanna see you!”
Law scoffs. His face is SO hot. “Shut up.”
He covers Luffy’s eyes and kisses him back.
Luffy’s a terrible kisser.
Law likes that.
He likes that there’s something he’s bad at. Because everything else about Luffy is so incredible.
Luffy goes to deepen the kiss but when he surges forward he knocks one of the comics with his foot and Law immediately stops the kiss to clean up everything.
When breakfast happens in the morning, Sanji complains briefly about someone breaking into his locker and messing sigh his stuff, but Zoro makes a remark that Sanji’s just upset because he hides sex toys in his locker and got found out.
They start fighting.
Luffy sits next to Law and eats all his pancakes, while Law picks at the accompanying fruit and eggs.
Then, under the table, Luffy grabs his hand.
Luffy’s hand is SO sticky.
Like, did he stick his hand IN the maple syrup?
Law lets it happen, though.
It’s good. It’s nice.
He fell asleep in the hammock last night with Luffy. Reading Sora.
Pirates can’t afford to get attached to things. Things get lost and looted and stolen.
But just this once. Just this once Law will try again.

Rereading Syrup village and I forgot what a huge part of Usopp's character is about being shamed and put down for the very things he's proud about. Things he has no control over, like class or who his family is. Being ostracized for these things even, and doubling down on said pride almost as a coping mechanism. And he has evey right to.
The things Kuro says about him are so cruel. And if nobody's gonna say it I will; there's really racist undertones to Kuro's words as well. And maybe it's not meant to be the actual in-universe reading, but it's easy to read into it at the very least symbolically. Like damn this guy sucks. I've said it before, but he really is the cruel, dishonest liar opposed to Usopp as the kind story-crafter. Usopp tells Kaya stories to make her feel better, Kuro tells her lies to control her. And because Kuro seems ashamed to be a failure and a pirate himself, he projects this onto Usopp, who is used to getting treated that way. Seeing him stand up for himself like this is something I miss so dearly.

The Romanticism of One Piece II: Fairy Tales
Part I Part III AO3
“I long to see the blue flower” --Novalis
In 1812, brothers Wihelm and Jacob Grimm published their first volume of fairy tales. The book was not initially meant to be read as purely children’s stories, but as a collection of tales they felt reflected German culture. They weren’t alone in their study of folk culture and stories, as interest revived throughout the Romantic period, particularly in Germany.
Tumblr media
Later editions of the Grimm’s fairy tales, however, were changed to be more suitable for younger audiences. There was something about the stories that captured the mind of a child, and the expansion of children as their own demographic to be catered to encouraged publishers to specifically produce works for younger audiences. I feel like CS Lewis said it best while defending his own use of fairy tales, “He [the person reading fairy tales] does not despise real woods because he has read of enchanted woods: the reading makes all real woods a little enchanted”. The Romantics of this era were themselves enchanted by the power of these stories, and utilized them to great effect in their works.
Romanticism gets its name from the medieval ballads that were popular during the time period, themselves written in the romantic languages. Artists drew heavily from a mythologized past for their paintings, and writers such as Goethe and Novalis wrote literary fairy tales of their own inventions, drawing upon allegory and metaphor to express their philosophical ideals. In 1813 Percy Bysshe Shelly wrote a revolutionary and radical tract in the form of a poem and fairy tale, named after and heavily featuring Queen Mab. These men, along with the Brothers Grimm followed a tradition set by the “discovery” of Ossian, an epic poem that presented itself as the Gaelic equivalent of the Iliad or Odyssey, but was largely an invention of the poet James Macpherson.
One Piece is chalk-full of allusions to fairytale and myth. The manga opens with the grand execution of Gold Roger, his final words the sort of promise that you could easily see becoming a campfire story today, a whispered rumor and legend of impossible treasure for any person brave enough to go looking for it.
Tumblr media
Oda starts leaning into real-world myth as early as chapter 23 with Usopp’s introduction, his name in part derived from the Greek storyteller Aesop and the plot a loose retelling of the Boy Who Cried Wolf, with his trademark nose being a clear reference to Pinocchio.
When looking at One Piece’s use of real-world myth and story, the thing that strikes me is how often Oda will borrow from the iconography of a story without simply rehashing it. Just about every major arc borrows in some way from real world children’s tales, but you’d be hard pressed to call Oda’s usage derivative. Even with the broad pool of references Oda draws from, the manga never would have lasted as long as it has if he’d just copied from the stories we’ve all heard since childhood.
For example, on Drum Island Chopper is a clear reference to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Much like the Syrup Village before it, it draws directly on the themes of the original work, ostracization and rejection being primary motivators when developing Chopper’s arc.
But more than that, Hiliruk is introduced entering his unwitting patient’s houses through the chimney, just like Santa Claus, and Chopper’s repeated journeys up and down the mountain using the island’s rope system while pulling a sleigh is clearly borrowing from the iconography of Christmas. But you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would call Drum Island a Christmas story, even though it’s set on an appropriately wintery environment.
Tumblr media
There are more examples. Laboon eating the Straw Hat’s ship could be seen as a reference to Moby Dick, Pinocchio, or the biblical story of Jonah, yet Reverse Mountain doesn’t share themes with any of those stories outside of the use of a mythical whale. The Skypiea Saga kicks off with the introduction of shadowy “giants”, before moving to a treasure hunt while befriending a young girl who plays a harp, and ends with the felling of a giant beanstalk. But does anyone really think of Skypiea as a retelling of Jack and the Giant Beanstalk?
My favorite of these has to be Alabasta, since I see so few people pick up on it. The entire climax of the arc involves a devilish crocodile, a man with a hook for a hand, a ticking clock, and the imposing presence of a giant clock tower that looks suspiciously like Big Ben in a setting otherwise influenced by Egyptian archeology. Why or how Oda decided to mix Peter Pan with his epic tale of friendship and betrayal amidst a war on a desert island is beyond me, but he did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These examples aren’t only found pre-timeskip. I saw people able to guess who would live and die during Wano based solely on how closely Oda was following various Japanese fables, with broad plot elements being based on the famous story of Momotaro.
Of course, Oda doesn’t limit himself to fairy tale and myth. He frequently draws from history and pop culture at large, or, at least, the pop culture of his youth. Sanji’s design is based on Reservoir Dogs. All the Admirals share a face with Japanese actors. Thriller Bark is named after and directly homages—more than once!--Michael Jackson. Somehow you can have music video references sitting next to yokai, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, and the Island of Dr. Moreau without cognitive dissonance, because that’s just how Oda writes. The Tree of Knowledge (the ‘of good and evil’ is implied) can coexist with Adam and Eve—which here are also trees—which can in turn overlap with Yggdrasil. The biblical ark Noah can exist in the same island as the Flying Dutchman, while the most biblically-coded of all the sagas can have an ark of its own while drawing many of its names and iconography from Eastern religions such as Shinto and Buddhism. That’s not when it’s drawing on Meso- and Native American iconography and religion instead. And somehow…somehow…it all gels together with the stories of El Dorado and Jack and the Giant Beanstalk.

Once one starts going down the rabbit hole of references and homage it becomes hard to stop. The interweaving of so many references, both obvious and not, while still maintaining an original plot boggles the mind. How Oda got the idea to mix Alice and Wonderland, Power Rangers, Aladdin, and fascist iconography while also turning Sanji into a Disney Princess is beyond me, and in my opinion, a large part of his creative genius.
But the question remains…why? Why reference Santa Claus on Drum, or Jack and the Giant Beanstalk in Skypiea? Some allusions make sense with the surrounding story, but others seem to be placed at random just because Oda could.
I think the answer falls back to the Romanticism of One Piece. Oda has said in many different interviews that he writes with an audience of children in mind, particularly young boys. By pulling from the stories of childhood he creates a frame of reference, and because Oda draws from a wide pool of sources that frame of reference can have a more universal appeal, fitting with his world-spanning, swashbuckling adventure. I was never told the story of Momotaro, but I know about the Boy who Cried Wolf. My grasp of Norse mythology is shaky at best, but I recognize the image of a reindeer pulling a sleigh through the night sky.
As I’ll get into later, the Romantics were obsessed with the innocence and experience of childhood. That was one of the reasons they were drawn so much to fairy tales. To them, stories that were spread amongst the common folk were the most pure form of culture, and it was from these stories that they strove to create a shared identity.
One Piece is a world-spanning tale, and the stories it references reflect that. But for as different as culture can be from country to country, or island to island, there’s a shared humanity in the stories we tell. A fairy tale will always feel like a fairy tale, whether it’s from Japan or Germany. And by immersing itself in these memories of childhood, Oda carves himself a place amongst these ancient stories
Marking the end of One Piece’s prologue, chapter 100 draws back from the immediate story to call attention to its own internal myth. Utilizing some Oda boxes quoting Gold Roger, the narrator writes, “These things cannot be stopped. An inherited strength of will, one’s dreams, and the ebb and flow of ages. As long as people hunger for freedom, these things will always exist”.
Tumblr media
The name of chapter 100? The Legend Begins.
This isn't a coincidence. The Grand Line in particular is described in-universe as a land of fairy tales. The Little Garden and Elbaf arcs start with quotes from the explorer Louis Arnot. The cover of Brag Men, where these quotes come from, labels the book romantic fiction. Oda revealed in the SBS for volume 42 that the stories within the book are so outrageous and unbelievable to ordinary people that they’re believed to be untrue, much like the story of Noland the Liar.
Tumblr media
And yet, these are the stories that Luffy goes chasing after.
Now, I could send an age quibbling over the difference between a myth, a legend, and a fairy tale, but in the case of One Piece there’s enough overlap to be irrelevant. One Piece draws upon fairy tales because in many ways it is a fairy tale. It’s easy to imagine the entire story being told from Usopp’s perspective as he sits around the fire, telling his tale to a wide-eyed audience of children. Whether he’s telling the truth or not doesn’t matter, because it feels true, and for the first time the woods start to feel enchanted. And perhaps it’s that spark of magic that’s enough to stir the imagination of the next generation of dreamers to go out on adventures of their own, no matter how absurd and impossible.

"LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!"
It was a beautiful warm sunny day on the thousand sunny, you recently just joined the straw hat crew about 3 weeks ago to be exact. They had to dock on an island for supplies. And to get their ship fixed up, but surprisingly you came from a tribe of werewolves, and you learned how to shift into your Wolf form during both the day and night. Luffy though that you were pretty cool and practically begged you to join his crew?
And now here you are on the thousand sunny you were sitting against the tree on the grassy deck drawing sketches, nami and Robin. We're both sitting under an umbrella on one side of the deck, while Usopp and Franky we're having a shooting contest On the other side of the deck shooting at objects floating in the water.
When chopper spotted a distress signal coming from a nearby island? Luffy and Sanji both appear out of nowhere! And Luffy ordered to go and investigate, so as your ship docked to help out, whoever was shipwrecked, but turned out the whole thing was a trap, buy the foxy pirates who wanted a rematch of the davy back fight?
"What's a davy back fight?" Franky asked, Usopp explained what the Davy backfight was and about how luffy and the others competed in the games long before Franky, Brook and you joined the crew (poor chopper, he is still traumatized from the last davy back fight 🥺)
"It does look like fun, but I'm not interested, so if you guys need me, I'll be back at the ship." You said, but before you headed back to the ship, you felt the hairs on your back stand on end and feeling like something wasn't right? So you decided to stay and watch the games from the sidelines.
However, somehow, during the eating contest your crew soon found out that one of the members, a foxy crew turned out to be a marine advral and planned this whole thing to defeat the straw hats both sanji and zoro, we're taken along with two members of foxy's crew you were thankful that luffy was all right but you worried for the other two members of your crew.
you split your group into two teams Brook and Chopper stay on the island to find the antidote while your group went off to go rescue Zoro And sanji meanwhile, on the way to the island where your friends were being held captive. Foxy offered some creepy looking buttons, of course, nobody wanted them except luffy so you took a more classy approach.
"Here foxy, i will take those." You said, as you gently took all of the buttons, then he walked over to Cacho, who had a box full of them, and you dropped all of the buttons back into the box with the rest of them, then he took the box from Cacho and walked over to the site of the ship then threw the box overboard into the ocean.
Nami, in the others were relieved and thank you for getting rid of them help luffy, chuckled. As he saw the disappointed, look on foxy's face luffy always did love how a savage you could be for good reasons but hearing his gentle chuckle made you blush, once you reached the island we're friends are being held captive,
"Let's play a game shall we?" (Okay mister JIGSAW!😂) The marine adverel's voice echoes through the speakers that our hidden in some of the rock towers around the island, the enemy explains that in one of the rock towers has your friends trapped inside and within the rock towers were built in canons and an army of marine soldiers?
In the center of the island there was a geyser that blows out steam? Filled with seawater. That created a creepy eerie fog surrounding the island but as you're distracted by the fog some vines wrapped itself around Robin. In some of the marine soldiers came and collected her, one by one members of your group disappears? All of the vines around the island we're controlled by seawater. Which rendered part of your group powerless.
Once luffy found the rest of his friends, Usopp and the others warned him to stay back due to some traps, but knowing your stubborn captain, he refused to give up to rescue his friends But you yourself remained hidden from the enemy. Awaiting your captain to give out a signal before you all got separated, luffy had you hide out of sight from the enemy. To plan a surprise attack in case anything went wrong, plus you were immune to the sea prism stones and to the vines being controlled by seawater because of your tribes ancestral abilities.
After luffy fell into one of the traps and foxy was rendered powerless because of the seawater in the fog, as the enemy was gloating about his plans succeeding, your captain reminded him of something?
"The joke's on you i also had a little maneuver plan of my own?" Luffy said, and he whistled the enemy looked a little bit confused, wondering what he meant by that before he began to strike add luffy. Suddenly, the enemy freezed as he heard the sound of a crying wolf howling from a far distance? Cacho who had a gun pointing at foxy looked around in a panic. Nami who is also lay in on the ground looks around and she smiles.
Everyone, hears a growling sound coming closer to them. The marine advral looked up and saw a pair of glowing eyes approaching them. He shout for Cacho to shoot at whatever creature it was. Just then you jumped onto his side and you bit down the gun in half with your teeth leaving the broken pieces on the ground and you stared face to face with your enemy.
"Hell yeah that's our girl!" Usopp shouted with excitement, "Y/n what a relief you made it right on time!" Nami giggled happily, you appeared in your werewolf form standing in between your friends and the marine adveral and in front of you, was a hole where luffy fell "i knew I can count on you y/n, keep them busy while I try to get out of here." Luffy shouted. "You got it, captain." You growled, as you stare down at the villain in front of you,
Cacho was shaking in fear as he backed away slowly. Foxy, on the other hand was also shocked at first, but now his eyes sparkled with amazement. "Luffy, you didn't tell me that you had a werewolf In your crew!" He said with excitement in his voice.
As you began to fight. And fended off the enemies attacks the villain used one of his attacks that struck you in the force of the energy of the attack cause you to fly backwards across the field and it's slammed you against the hard stone right above, where Robin was tied up you let out a painful wine once you fell to the ground. "Y/N! Are you alright?" She said with worry in her voice.
You slowly start to get back up, ask your friends for encouraging you to stand up in fight. Luckily after sometime chopper and brook finally arrived to the island to give sanji and zoro. The antidote that chopper made for them, once the two of them were back to normal, and everybody we're fighting an army of Marines. Wants, the enemies were defeated and your crew escaped.
Split head was happily reunited. With his crew. After going back to your ships and parted ways with the foxy pirates, while everybody was heading to the kitchen on the sunny, when suddenly luffy extended his arms wrapping themselves around your waist and pulling you towards him in a great big hug "Thanks for all your help back there y/n i couldn't have done it without you." He said and do you get giggled,
"It was the least I could do. Besides, you're my captain after all, so of course I do anything to protect the ones I love." You replied, giving him a light smile. He gently took off his hat and placed it on top of your head before leaning in and placed his lips on yours, in a surprisingly soft but tender kiss it was short and sweet and when you pulled apart "I love you too y/n." He chuckled, you feel the heat, raise as your face turns pink. And you gently? Pull his hat down your face to hide the blush. He lets out a light laugh at the site of you.
"Now come on, let's go eat I'm starving." He said, as he grabbed your hand and started pulling you towards the kitchen to join the others.
( I hoped you enjoyed it. This is my first one piece story and I tried my best? now, i bid you all farewell until next time. Have a lovely day/evening/night😁)
