THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS. Sometimes I watch this scene (from Water 7) and all I can think about is Sanji flashing back to his horrible family and panicking, which I think is WHY he reacts so violently to Luffy's (unspoken) words here (also he knows Luffy can take it, isnt worried he'll actually get injured).

I also feel like, a lot of people miss it, but Sanji is very PROTECTIVE of Usopp! In Alabasta, after defeating Bon Clay, Sanji first runs to check and make sure that USOPP is the one who is okay (not Nami or one of the girls). In Skypeiea he risks his life for both Nami and Usopp on seperate occasions on the Arc Maxim. In Water 7 (on the Puffing Tom) he is the one who is most tolerant of his need to hide his identity. He tries to stop Blueno from hurting him, and then in Enies Lobby he is the one to remind him everyone has different strengths!

I think Sanji is someone who always wants to protect anyone who might be "weak," but I feel like with Usopp in particular he sees a lot of himself and is always looking out for him. There's no doubt that in this scene he is the one who understood Usopp's feelings the most.

Are you tired of me pointing out the Sanji & Usopp parallels yet? Well too bad! Here's more.

Gee, I wonder why Sanji, the guy who was told by his family he should "just leave" for being weak when he was a kid, got so upset when Luffy was about to tell Usopp, who was clearly feeling insecure for being the "weak" one of the group, to "just leave".

Post-timeskip modern SanUso where they go to a haunted house, but Usopp doesn't really react to anything meanwhile Sanji is the one getting jump scared and clinging to him. Why you ask? Why when it's Usopp always depicted as cowardly and easy to scare? It's simple. Usopp knows the ghouls, goblins, and ghosts in the haunted house aren't real. He goes in knowing they're fake, and that they can't grab him or touch him. This makes any possible threat mute, and as a result he just doesn't react to any of them except for a nervous laugh. This obviously leaves a lot of the volunteers put out.

However!!! Sanji is clinging to Usopp at every scare because maybe, maybe Usopp slightly embellished what the volunteers were allowed to do. And the house is actually really well done! Usopp commends them on the fake gore, and aged props. Since Usopp isn't reacting but Sanji is, Sanji becomes the target of the volunteers, and that makes everything worse for the cook. This leaves Usopp reveling in how tightly Sanji is clinging to him for once! Even if something does scare him, he refuses to break character of being completely unphased. He needs this. They're chased out of the last hallway via man with chainsaw with a hyper realistic bug head mask, but they get out.

It's a wonderful role reversal of their usual dynamic when there is a threat.

Sanji smiling and asking Usopp when he did get so brave. Usopp grinning and explaining how he trained under extreme duress with the most terrifying beings know to man- and Luffy comes up behind him and touches his shoulder. Usopp screams and jumps so high his shoe comes off and hits the trashcan across the walkway. Bravest boy~❤️
