do you think dune kinda knew sunny was a hybrid because
he knew thorn didnt tell many people about the egg, he knew that she didnā€™t reveal the father at all
and stealing the egg he wouldve been like ā€œhrm. this looks different from a lot of sandwing eggs. must be a thing thornā€™s family has idkā€
and when sunny popped out with her clearly not sandwing coloration and her clearly not sandwing tail he probably thought ā€œoh shit. that explains it igā€
like we know almost nothing about him but i think he wouldve protected sunny in his own little way. like ā€œoh yeah, thatā€™s just a thing with some sandwing eggs. itā€™s somethign that occurred in her motherā€™s family dont worry about itā€ and no one couldve argued because heā€™s the expert or whatever
like he wouldnā€™t have told sunny. he was part of burnā€™s army and she wasnā€™t a fan of hybridization. like yeah! he hated burn! but that mentality probably stuck with him a bit. and even if he didnā€™t want sunny to get hurt because she was the daughter of his friend he also didnt want her or anyone else to know.

Unsorted WOF thoughts part 118:
Dune was probably a shitty guardian, considering Clay's description of him being only marginally better than Kestrel. But man, he really got the short end of the stick.
Permanently disabled in a way that really sucks for a dragon, given how often they use their wings.
Had to betray Thorn for the sake of the prophecy, by extension betraying Six-Claws, who was probably his first and only real friend.
Made to take care of five dragonets, something he explicitly made clear he didn't want to spend his life doing.
Had to speak neutrally about the dragon who personally disabled him because he wasn't allowed to alter the dragonets' decision in any way.
JUST before his time as their guardian was supposed to end, they were suddenly ambushed by an ally of the dragon who ruined his life.
Died quickly and uselessly as one final blow to this extremely experienced and war-hardened veteran, not even able to buy the dragonets some time.

It's so weird that Talons of Peace and Morrowseer didn't notice that Sunny was a hybrid. She literally looks like a golden nightwing with a sail. Okay, maybe most dragons have never seen a nightwings, but Dune spent most of his life around sandwings, and he would have definitely figured out that Sunny was a hybrid, since her build and face are nothing like a sandwing. I think Dune knew Sunny was a hybrid back then, and he probably even knew about Stonemover but kept quiet about it.

Dungeons & Dragonets nuff said
Tumblr media
Don't know what to write here. Doodled while on a long drive and finished it at home.
Clay is a paladin, Tsunami is a barbarian because of her loud personality, Glory a ranger, Starflight is your token wizard and I had difficulty determining Sunny's class. She's actually very sneaky in the book (and that her mother is a literal rogue incarnate) and that would push her towards the rogue spectrum, but then her morals come into play and then boom, cleric.
It was too big to be called a sword. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw iron.

Moo Deng as Baby Clay Again
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heā€™s more of baby Clay being a pest and the ā€œlittle monster he was meant to beā€ - Kestrel. Webs and Kestrel being targeted by Clay may have made sense.
Hereā€™s a ramble, Dune gets a bad rap. I feel like Dune didnā€™t hate the dragonets but just tolerated them. He cared about the prophecy somewhat to even be in the cave, caged from the rest of the world, and betray Thorn and Six-Claws. We also didnā€™t get enough of Dune to think he was a bad guardian, the only comment about him, from what I can think of, is Tsunami saying that he didnā€™t really care about anything and that Glory didnā€™t like him. Dune also was suffering from the memories of the war and his injuries jut to keep on reminding him.

The DoD would totally play rpgs growing up, I know realistically it would be Webs to tea h them about it, but young Dune totally would have played during his warrior fantasies, and later with Six-Ckaws in both the army and with the Outclaws. So I'd like to imagine that, when the DoD took interest in one of the scrolls Webs brought back (a how to play guide the older seawing prolly didn't think much of), Dune gruffly but reasonably encouraged them to try it out.
Tsunami would be the DM, but would probably keep getting into arguments with Glory and Starflight. Clay would just want to keep the peace, but he'd have a hard enough time figuring out the game. I think Sunny is very into it, but nobody listens to her, so Starflight ends up echoing her sentiments to keep the game moving. All in all, the DoD probably all get pretty into it, Glory probably lounged nearby during the session 0, watching but pretending not to care, until she quietly joined in the first session, with enough confidence that nobody openly questioned it when she described an intricatly fleshed out edgelord character (think full tween deviantart oc). Starflight was a rules lawyer, but they loved him and if it ever got bad someone would pounce on him and they would keep going. Already touched on Clay and Sunny, but Tsunami probably tried to make everything cool, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse when she did a bit too much railroading (She definitely sneaks the plot of the Missing Princess in there). Dune encouraged the DoD to stay with the game, waiting until any fights cooled down before suggesting they try again. There was no overarching story to the 'campaign', but the DoD were young and it was just something fun to do.
Later in life, Sunny decides to try and run a campaign for some students in Jade Mountain. She probably runs a couple different games for different students (at least one of them tries to involve Stonemover, but he's too sad for it), but the one we care about has Kinkajou, who dragged along Moon. Qibli of course came with her. Kinkajou also invited Tamarin, which means Anemone is there, too. Pike tried to follow, but he strikes me as the kind of dragon who thinks dnd is Satan worship, and won't get close.
Thanks to her character development, Sunny is actually a great GM, she's got Thorn's knack for people by this time, and it really helps in this situation. This table is actually pretty awesome. Kinkajou hypes everyone up and keeps them all confident in their choices, Moon is a good mediator of course, and Qibli is a delightful person to play alongside. Anemone sometimes struggles with being the bad kind of power gamer, but she's trying to be better and the group is very understanding. Tamarin maybe doesn't speak too much, but true to life when she does it's deeply impactful. This group does a lot of therapy thanks to Sunny running it, and other than Qibli and Anemone skirting the line, it's very family friendly.
Another JMA group is actually run by Turtle! He's a little nervous to commit to it, but Peril has always wanted to play and convinces him to run a oneshot after Clay talks about playing with his friends. She thinks Clay would like her more if she also understood the game (not knowing he never did), and Turtle used to play with his brothers in huge group games. They end up running drop in oneshots, but most dragons are pretty scared to play with Peril, save for a few. It ends up being very healthy for them, as it helps quiet Turtle branch out, and dangerous Peril get closer to other students. The funniest one is Pike, who as I said before thinks this game is evil. He thinks he is infiltrating the villainous practice to see if it is dangerous to Anemone, but ends up absolutely loving it, in secret of course. The trio ends up playing together more and more often as a way to get better at people together, and Pike becomes much less insufferable. These three get REALLY intense with rp, and eventually welcome a curious and dumbfounded Winter, who wants to learn after hearing about Moon and Qibli's group. These players should hate each other in one way or another, but they have a fun time being really aggressive and intense, and despite feeling intimidated, Turtle has a great time with such a heavy rp game.
Also, somehow through Winter the group ends up hosting a game with Linx and Snowfall, which is a crazy day.

Rereading wings of fire and like. I forgot how violent it is. I guess you always forget how violent the stuff you read as a kid is. Kestrel bites and hits and hurts the dragonets, and they all just. Have to take it. They know that neither of the other guardians will stop her or help them. They donā€™t try to teach any of them about their cultures, they donā€™t try to help them learn to make good decisions. I mean, what do they need to learn to fight for? I think Kestrel just wanted to hurt them, honestly.
And then Clay and the other kids watch their foster father be brutally murdered in front of them by the second new adult theyā€™ve met in their lives ever. And thatā€™s AFTER finding out that the FIRST new adult theyā€™ve ever met has instructed their only guardians and parents up to that point to kill one of their adopted siblings. And Clay has to listen to his adoptive mother agree to kill his sister! And he has to tell her and the rest of their siblings that, and she justā€¦ accepts it! I think we gloss over how easily Glory accepts that her foster mother is planning to kill her in her sleep that very night.
The narration describes the sound of Duneā€™s corpse on the ground. Clay watches his guardian, one of the only three adults he knows, die in front of him, despite his best efforts. Glory watches one of her abusers be murdered in front of him, and then sheā€™s taken captive and used as living decor by the murderer! I think itā€™s also pertinent to mention that the closest thing any of them have to a therapist is one of their other sisters, whom they unilaterally treat as being generally too dumb and friendly to be of any real help.
Of course theyā€™re all relatively well adjusted and most untraumatized because this is a childrenā€™s book that I personally was introduced to via a scholastic book fair. We donā€™t really have space for the kind of cptsd responses that these kids absolutely would have. They all pull through more or less evenly rewarded by the narrative. Clay gets to meet his sibs and has his place in his adopted family reaffirmed; Tsunami gets a sense of personal and cultural identity kind of thrust onto her; Glory gets to say ā€œfuck you allā€ to everyone who was ever mean to her; Starflight gets a gf; Sunny finds her family and becomes a princess. Tbh the boys are the ones who lose out the most, Glory Tsunami and Sunny all become royalty. Poor Starflight. But hey, your adoptive sister is now technically your queen, so yay? Sorry Clay, donā€™t think Queen Moorhen will be inviting you to family dinner.
I would love to see some theories or fic that touch on what a more realistic portrayal of their symptoms and healing might look like. Iā€™m not educated enough to make any guesses as to what kind of psychological scars being raised in a cave as a chosen one might leave.

Grumpy Dune RAUGGGGH
I had more fun designing some wof character so Bull Dune! :] He had one of his horns broken off during the war hehe I thought it would be so badass when Dune decided to charge towards Queen Scarlet and threw her off with his horns like bulls did before his death.

Dune the Sandwing
[Image Description: Two digital drawings of Dune, from the book series wings of fire on a yellow tinted, nearly white background. Dune is drawn from the shoulders up and facing towards the right with a snarl. In the first drawing, he has damaged, scarred bright yellow scales that slowly fade into a darker shade, and a light yellow underbelly, the sail is the same shade of yellow. Duneā€™s horns are dark brown and slightly curved backwards. The second image is almost the same, Duneā€™s scales are orange and slowly fade into a darker shade of brown, his underbelly and sail are still the same shade of light yellow that was mentioned bevor. End of image description]
I didnā€™t know which design to choose for him
So I decided to do both!
The first one is from the Wof wiki and the second one from the graphic novel
Speaking of the graphic novelā€¦
Duneā€™s design (among other things) in the novel surprised me a bit if I should be honest
He lost one of his forelegs, and his right wing because of serious injuries he received from fighting with a Icewing soldier, but in the graphic novel we donā€™t see him with those injuries
Iā€˜m also confused why the opening with Burn, Hvitur and the SkyWing egg got cut out as well?
At first I thought itā€™s because of some sort of censorship? But later in the book we see Queen Scarlet snap Duneā€™s neck, Horizon burning to death because of Peril, Fjord gruesomely dying to Gloryā€™s venom, a battlefield full of dead dragons ect.
I hope none of this came across as rude ^^ā€œ
Despite the things I mentioned I still really like the graphic novel and the work that went into them
I even ordered the newest one that got out!
Itā€™s gonna take a while to get delivered to me sadly :ā€˜D

ngl because I read the graphic novels I never realized Dune (Talons of Peace) and Dune (Soldier) were the same person after reading the winglets, cause man, graphic novels Dune sure does have all of his limbs intact! And while his wing is messed up its not nearly as bad ngl still love the graphic novels but man... what a weird change...
