The 5 Koshas
When introduced to yoga, we are introduced to a variety of concepts and philosophical beliefs related to yoga with the star of the show being the Chakras but another concept just as important is the Koshas. According to the Yogic path, we are multilayered individuals, resembling an onion with each layer representing something different and capable of being purified through different activities. Here are the 5 Koshas:
Annamaya
The Annamaya Kosha is the most physical part of our body, it is purified by the food that we introduce to our bodies and the practice of Asana yoga.
Pranamaya
Pranamaya, prana is the life force energy that flows through everything. It flows through us also, it is not our soul but it is the energizing force that moves us. It deals with every moving part of the body and can be purified through the practice of pranamaya and Asana yoga practice.
Manomaya
Manomaya refers to the mind from the ego perspective, what do we think of ourselves,. It is purified by Bhakti or Karma yoga, it deals with our emotions and pieces of our ego.
Vijnanamaya
Vijnanamaya deals with the intellect. Our approach to studying, our dedication, discipline, and how we go about taking in knowledge. This is purified through the practice of Svadhaya, studying, satsang, and meditation.
Anandamaya
Anandamaya, the bliss that we experience when coming out of a meditation or yoga session is a reflection of Anandamaya, purified by Bakhti and a connection to the source.

What do you think about Alexandra, the HSR author? Any pros and cons? I've been seeing a lot of criticism about her on tumblr but it seems like people on reddit still love her work.
she's an incredible writer. it takes insane skill to put together a coherent, interesting plot from hs lore. i love her characterization (of lane, the lis, the side charas and the immortals especially), her ideas for the plot, the themes she tries to embody through them. how she writes dread and tension (ep5 , ep9), the way you can feel it up your spine. the tiny, almost insignificant details that add up later on (noah left handed).
lane isn't a generic 'weird girl' protagonist that's three tropes in a trenchcoat bc people wanna jump on this bandwagon. she's written with so much depth and attention and you can just tell aleksandra herself must've been through it to be writing inner monologues like this. she's already so close to my heart and i always feel seen by her thoughts. as for cain... even without bias he's a crazy, crazy character. she's balancing all the aspects of his personality without making him seem cartoonish like other books i won't name. and i truly hope she heals bc no way a sane person thought cainlane up.
getting to the lows, when it comes to writing she fumbled the finale. she tried to fit everything into one episode and had to sacrifice screentime and consequently emotional impact for significant developments. and ofc the diversity issue. all has already been said (borderline homophobia, sidelining the poc and woc, two drops of melanin in the whole world it seems) so i'll talk about something i've haven't seen mentioned much – the heteronormativity.
it's obvious that she sees poc/queer people/diff body types as a novelty, an oddity, a deviation from the standard (in her writing at least) and it shows plainly in hsr. cain's character profile mentioning that men grew envious of him while women went into a frenzy, lestor's 'i save them for the ladies' comment and the worst offender: lane wondering if she started seeing anna in a romantic light as there were no other suitable men around.
compare this with arina who weaves diversity in casually, like the vampire lady talking about her lover, the option to set up tallis and onyx, how jorge is shown to love yoga and fitness as a fat man.
readers aren't stupid and it's very easy to catch on to an author who's just trying to fill a quota vs one who really cares about who they're writing. tldr she's a great writer but it won't kill her to have a character that isn't paper white and gatorade blue eyed.

Years ago there was that weird story of that white woman that went to this yoga class and started projecting this pity story on a randomly chunky Black woman in her yoga class and people were like wtf
You saw a random big Black woman and started imagining how she'd be jealous of you until it made you cry ( there's other things about it I'm forgetting) and I feel like that's the dynamic these online tokens of colour seem to want. The combination of pity and rage that comes from their text and videos is very uncomfortable.
Please shift that, I'm jealous of every random white woman narrative from an WE to an EYE experience. When I left my multicultural paradise for university that was much whiter than my normal, it was odd and new sometimes being a token but the idea of putting white womanhood on a pedestal like these lot do ...foreign! Unthinkable! And I wasn't the queen of self love in uni. This would be less of an issue if this dysfunctional behaviour didn't hide behind simply talking about racism and beauty standards or these people didn't imply that's just how all of us feel. We're feverishly wishing we were white then talking about anti-racism??? It's one thing to struggle with self hate and be unaware of anti-racism stuff that typically helps people feel less crazy and learn to be comfortable with themselves but they know anti-racism
Sorry it's just weird seeing Black women act like self hating Black men lol and have that I want to hate fuck thing going on. Typically, even when WOC hate their skin colour they still have a base level of pride in being a woc but these online tokens are learning on the spot and for an audience.

I can't believe I haven't written in almost two weeks. :// I really regret falling so behind with journaling on here. I want to get back to it, because it helps me process my thoughts. Long post underneath the read more.
notes on life,
I was thoroughly overwhelmed by my work trip two weeks ago, but I was delighted to get to see @thatisadamnfinecupofcoffee and @annespelledwithane again. Spending time with them (going out for ramen and to the prettiest tea house in the East Village, and then eating an entire buffet of desserts from two different bakeries, and staying up until 2 AM) was a mini-vacation I very much needed.
It took me a whole week to recover from being out of town for a few days. :// I truly don't bounce back from travel the way I used to a few years ago...
I've been in my new job for almost exactly one month now. The challenging transition phase is over. I'm still adjusting to being way busier than I used to be, putting a lot more mental effort in. It's tiring. Every day, I do roughly as much work as I used to do in one week at my old job, so I have to work faster and harder than I used to before. It makes the days go by super fast, which is disorienting. I feel like February just started, but actually the month started eight days ago.
I've been trying to keep on top of my personal goals despite all of that. I've been enjoying swimming and yoga. I cooked a new recipe, halal cart chicken and rice, and it turned out really good. I'm hoping to cook two more new recipes before the end of this month. I finished my audiobook of The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, and it was so good that I kept thinking of the ending for days after I finished it. I started listening to My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix a few days ago as well.
I had my long-awaited psychiatrist appointment yesterday. I was nervous, but the psychiatrist was very kind and empathetic, and she is also another WOC. She has suggested starting a new medication to treat type 2 bipolar disorder. I'm nervous, but hopeful that this could help me.
I've been going through pelvic floor physical therapy as well for the past couple of weeks, which is quite a time and energy commitment - weekly appointments with the PT, and regular practice at home. It's tiring, on top of everything else going on with work, social life, home maintenance, exercise, etc., but I'm hopeful that this too will help me address longstanding issues with excessive pelvic floor tightness. I wish it could be fixed quickly, but I think it might take months to sort out.
I've been enjoying spending time with Derek playing board games, and cuddling my cat Westin and watching The Wire at night/in the evenings after work. The quiet time really helps me recover before the next work day.
I have been loving watching The Last of Us.
I had a wonderful time hanging out with my little nieces, five and almost three years old, on Saturday and playing hide and seek with them. <3
I had a dream that really hit me hard a couple of nights ago. I dreamed I got to see my brother again. We hung out, and I gave him a big hug. I was adopted, so we weren't raised together. We only saw each other once every few years, until our families became estranged. I haven't seen him in 10 years now, as we live in different countries. We're in touch occasionally over text. I wrote on here last fall that I thought I processed my grief over that separation, and found surrogate siblings in my brothers- and sisters-in-law via Derek's family. So this dream hit me hard. I wouldn't have normally done this, but I sent my brother a short text tonight, just saying I was thinking about him and I hope he and his wife are doing well. It hurts a lot. I always wonder if I'm ever going to see him again. I would love to give him and my sister-in-law a hug.
I'm looking forward to therapy on Friday. I haven't been able to have an appointment in about three weeks or so, and I'm excited to be able to process my thoughts and feelings with my therapist, and getting back to doing that on here by myself as well.

“Womanism Is To Feminism As Purple Is To Lavender.” 💜 I’ve read a lot of decidedly #feminist text and there is deep relationship between folk who call themselves #womanist thinkers and those who identify as #feminists. That’s what #WomanismIsToFeminism is speaking to. Relationship. However, in regards to “Relationship” no other political or social framework includes language about deep relationship with all people in its origin and definition. That matters. This means that from its inception, Womanism was thinking about everyone. As the cultivation of this important work has grown, more clear language about centering the most marginalized “the least of these” has been emphasized in that defining but relationship with everyone, regardless of age, race, ability, #sexuality, #gender or difference was being considered in this #praxis AT ITS INCEPTION. “Nobody’s free until EVERYBODYS free.” - #FannieLouHamer “If black women were free it would mean that everyone else would have to be free...” - #CombaheeRiverCollective And because #blackwomen and femmes are rarely centered, there is some tension with that idea that she shld be centered in organizing and movement building... but unless her voice is heard, we ALL (even the privileged) stay bound. So what is your justice work if you know nothing of black women at the beginning - or our impact on every major movement to exist on the continental US and abroad, almost to the exclusion of none? How are you leading or shifting or changing without #blackwomen and #blackfemme voices being lifted? What is your #justice work without us? Really, how? #TheFreePeopleProject Learn more. Get tickets. Find out how to sponsor a scholarship ticket for a #WOC. *We allegedly have some student tickets available as well. 👀 More on that soon. #TheFreePeopleProject Use the comment section below to invite your friends, your college professor, and your Aunt to this discussion. What makes your liberation work sustainable is knowing this learning and healing isn’t a one and done...
