The 5 Koshas
When introduced to yoga, we are introduced to a variety of concepts and philosophical beliefs related to yoga with the star of the show being the Chakras but another concept just as important is the Koshas. According to the Yogic path, we are multilayered individuals, resembling an onion with each layer representing something different and capable of being purified through different activities. Here are the 5 Koshas:
Annamaya
Tumblr media
The Annamaya Kosha is the most physical part of our body, it is purified by the food that we introduce to our bodies and the practice of Asana yoga.
Pranamaya
Tumblr media
Pranamaya, prana is the life force energy that flows through everything. It flows through us also, it is not our soul but it is the energizing force that moves us. It deals with every moving part of the body and can be purified through the practice of pranamaya and Asana yoga practice.
Manomaya
Tumblr media
Manomaya refers to the mind from the ego perspective, what do we think of ourselves,. It is purified by Bhakti or Karma yoga, it deals with our emotions and pieces of our ego.
Vijnanamaya
Tumblr media
Vijnanamaya deals with the intellect. Our approach to studying, our dedication, discipline, and how we go about taking in knowledge. This is purified through the practice of Svadhaya, studying, satsang, and meditation.
Anandamaya
Tumblr media
Anandamaya, the bliss that we experience when coming out of a meditation or yoga session is a reflection of Anandamaya, purified by Bakhti and a connection to the source.

Fat People In Motion: Yoga
***Disclaimer: No interaction of any sort by fitness, weight loss or thinspo blogs. You will be blocked if you do. ***
The faces/bodies often associated with yoga are usually white and as far away from fat as possible. Yoga is shown to be “health based” and anyone who is “unhealthy” is not supposed to indulge in the practice. Simply put, yoga is not “for” fat people. Wrong. Yoga is absolutely for fat people and many fat people, specifically women of color, are out and bending and shaping their bodies in the most beautiful ways.
Dianne Bondy, is a yoga teacher /social activist who’s message of inclusion for all types of bodies and abilities helps many people feel confident enough to try yoga.
This a commercial she did, in 2016, for a Pennington’s, a plus size clothing brand based in Canada. They started a campaign called #IWONTCOMPROMISE that focuses on dismantling stereotypes surrounding fat women.
youtube
Valerie Sagun aka Big Gal Yoga started her practice in college. Her yoga practice is based on  “…learning to love yourself physically and mentally through yoga. Learning to listen to your body, to know when to push it and when to protect it.”  She also has a book out now called “ Big Gal Yoga: Poses and Practices to Celebrate Your Body and Empower Your Life
Here she is in a video, from 2015, for BarcroftTV talking about her life, yoga and showing off her practice. ( Slight warning: If you go to the youtube page, don’t read the comments! Full of fatphobia. )
youtube
Jessamyn Stanley is a black, queer fat femme who embraces all aspects of herself while spreading the message of yoga and body love to the masses. She recently released a book called “Every Body Yoga”
The video below is from this year and comes from The Root has Jessamyn musing on her life, yoga, and living as a fat, black queer femme in this world today.

As an aside, there is a very thin line in yoga between appreciation and appropriation. As I am not well versed on this subject, I won’t delve further into it but I am acknowledging the issues that surround the practice of yoga by people who do culturally derive from the origins of it.

Mr. Vansh used to be absolutely contrary in his life before deciding to pursue a profession in yoga. Now he chants and performs hawan, which includes asanas, pranayama, and other practices. He's just about to take off as a Yoga professional in the outside world. Such is Mr Vansh Taneja, a 3rd-year BA student at Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga and Cultural Synthesis.

I don’t know if there really is any science behind workout routines separated by sex, but even if there is benefit to doing exercise “for women” i don’t give a shit. and i will intentionally seek out guides made For Men. because by and large, this is how the different video thumbnails shake out

Watch Your Thoughts
This week I have been teaching my Yoga classes around this quote— Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny. Bring your hands to your heart center (thought), open your hands to a flower mudra (that becomes the…

When I started practicing yoga 11 years ago, I couldn’t imagine where this journey would take me.
It’s insane how far back this road goes.
Adding, I am still just a shy beginner, a student for life. As I learn to be in every moment, to take every day as it comes, I also learn what matters to other. We are unique, each one of us in our own way, but what I discover is that my experience is shared by others.
Not so long ago, I also learned that sharing our experiences and knowledge is what helps us grow as communities. It is our time to rise & shine. It is our moment to paint the colors, shades, patterns of the future.
Are you ready? A new chapter begins. 🙏🏼
Flow with me online twice a week 🧘🏻‍♀️

thinking abt what it'd be like to take a yoga class with paige. maybe yoga is actually your thing and you like to go to the yoga studio a few times a week, it's become a part of your routine just like how paige has basketball. she has a little time off and gets the bright idea to join you for one of your classes. "i think it'll be fun. we can go together, get acai bowls afterwards, i get to stare at your ass in yoga pants..." she says. you don't need any convincing and you think it's nice paige wants to try one of your hobbies. once you've settled in, she didn't realize how hot the room would be. "baby, you didn't tell me we were going to hot yoga." "what do you mean? this is a hot yoga studio, p." she's out of her element, sweating so much more than she expected to. there's a point in which the instructor has everyone hold a pose for extra long. you glanced over at her and had to stifle giggles when you saw how badly she was grimacing. poor baby actually looked like she was in pain. when the class finally ended, your instructor told paige "you could learn a thing or two from Y/N, she's one of my best students" and winked at her. paige teases, "i don't know, for someone who does so much yoga she isn't the most patient teacher." you scoff and lightly smack her arm. when you get acai bowls after you ask for extra nutella on her's since she worked so hard today :( and you tell her "you did good, baby. maybe you can come with me more often?" "i'll let you know when i stop feeling the pulse on the back of my knee and think about it."
