“We write for the same reason that we walk, talk, climb mountains or swim the oceans – because we can. We have some impulse within us that makes us want to explain ourselves to other human beings.” – Maya Angelou

"You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive." - James Baldwin

Superior Subgenre: Race Satire by WOC
Here are my recommendations for satirical contemporary books by women of colour about racial fetishization and white neoliberals. Highly recommend these three books if you want to laugh, introspect, and marinate on how American society and institutions are being cooked by the culture war.

Ever since I escaped my toxic household and went no contact with people in my family, I have been trying to tap into what makes my life mine. Such as cultivating relationships and taking accountability for the way I treat/talk to people. I never want to leave a sour taste in peoples mouth if I can help it. I don’t want to only be a product of my upbringing, I want to thrive and be who I always knew I could be. I want people to see that, I want it to be so palpable to others as well as myself. I just want to be given a chance to be…me.

Hi there! In need to recast an old OC whose faceclaim was e/lizabeth o/lsen (I found her old google docs and i feel like she fits in a story my friends and i want to play, but i no longer feel comfortable using elizabeth for obv reasons). 25-30 years old, a young teacher/librarian in a dark academia setting, cool but strict older sister vibes. Woc options would be appreciated. thank you!!!

one of the absolute worst unironic takes i've seen on the instawebs is "only people from x background can write main characters from x background" like holy shit how can you possibly politicize literature to this extent?
it's genuinely shocking to me that some people's personal motto when it comes to art and media creation is "only write what you are". with this mindset, writing inherently becomes about social and political identity when it should be about "let's do justice to this character and their background the best we can".
