Watched the first three episodes of The Edge of Sleep tonight!!

So far so good, as far as adaptations go. The show itself is amazing so far! More mixed feelings with respect to it being an adaptation, though. So far it's remaining faithful to the overarching plot, though it has cut some scenes I enjoyed, and I am getting worried they'll cut the moobles thing, since they already said the high school incident was something different, that he was already with Katie when it happened, and there's that recurring flashback replacing the specific part about the scar. Now that i think about it yeah they absolutely cut that didn't they. It was referenced already but only one shot. (Again, i only finished episode 3)

Honestly kinda disappointed they cut the serial killer guy entirely. Like i hated him but that whole sequence was INTERESTING.

Funnily enough, one of my roommates i was watching it with had pulled an all nighter and said he was going to bed after this episode during episode three, and when the credits started i paused and realized he had fallen asleep. I said aloud "did [name] fall asleep?" to the other person i was watching with and he didn't react until i started laughing kinda loudly, bolted upright, and when the other person asked if he fell asleep he said "No. [Pause] i might have fallen asleep. Did i really fall asleep?" Then when i asked what the last thing he remembered happening was (so i knew how far to backtrack tomorrow) he said "uh... bedtime now goodnight" lmfao

Anyway, i would like to clarify IT IS A GOOD SHOW!!! It's because it's a good show that I'm not talking about it being a good show, because its merits as its own show, especially only being halfway through it, are less interesting to ramble about than my thoughts about the differences to the podcast and obviously i'm biased towards the original podcast. Oh I did like the bit where they went to the radio station though! That was cool!

Politics. It was a strange thing to decide to make your vocation. Many politicians in the city had ulterior motives. Some wanted to boost the profits of businesses, others want to give themselves a cushy retirement fund. Those in power often forgot about those who voted them.

Damien was certainly the black sheep of the Brooks family. His position in society made him keenly aware of the gap between him and many others, and the unfairness that brought with it. How was 'luck' a factor to simply being in possession of more money? How was he more deserving of opportunities?

No. He needed to focus on the matter at hand before the injustices began troubling him again.

"You really think so?" A silly question, in a way. He knew Mark wouldn't lie about such a thing. Being friends for as long as they had meant that honesty was not merely something that was sugarcoated to garner respect.

"It's like I learned in university: life is mine to choose, and it shouldn't be in the hands of anyone else... But why should not be extended? Why can't it be ours to choose, as a society?" Life is ours to choose... Now that had a nice ring to it. Mark's hand on his shoulder was almost further support of this decision, making him realise that perhaps the goal wasn't as ambitious as he feared. However, the reality quickly sank back in.

"You need to promise not to tell anyone. The last I need is my parents hearing about this. If they think there's going to be a way for them to 'be in charge', they're going to push me into this as their little puppet. I want to do this in my own time, when I am ready."

Umineko and WKM parallels

Both are initially presented as murder mysteries that happen in a mansion during a gathering of people who’ve known each other a long time but haven’t seen each other recently.

In Umineko, the supernatural stuff is just a covering for the reality of what happened. In WKM, the reality is just a covering for the supernatural stuff that’s happening.

Despite both being initially presented as whodunnits, the “who?” isn’t actually the important question. The real question is “why?”

The “why?’ has to do with a character whose plan of what would happen went way off the rails causing multiple people to die. This character is motivated by heartbreak and has a strong connection to whatever “supernatural” stuff is happening. They also have romantic feelings for the protagonist (despite mainly talking about wkm I’m also counting the With Markipliers in this). They also have multiple “selves”.

In Umineko, the supernatural is used as a scapegoat so you don’t have to blame anyone close to you. In WKM, everybody blames each other when the actual cause of what happened is the supernatural.

In both, guns are the murder weapon.

In both, the protagonist is the nicest person in the room and the least involved in the drams. But in Umineko, the perspective switches to others and what is presented to you is unreliable at best and a complete lie at worst. In wkm, there is only ever one pov character and their pov is entirely accurate.

In Umineko, the events of what happened are a catbox and nobody really knows what happened. In wkm, what happened is the only concrete thing in the timeline.

In Umineko, everyone is dead all along. In wkm, nobody can truly die.

In both, a lot of problems would be solved if everyone went to therapy.

Iplier Falls

Authors Note: 

Hello hello and welcome back! ( Or if you’re here for the first time, I’m glad you chose to check this fic out! Welcome! ) Never thought you’d see a rewrite of Gravity Falls x Iplier Inc in 2024, huh? The ALTRVerse comic has given me the motivation to get back into Markiplier Lore and hence I’m here!

This is the prologue and hence it's just a test to see how people react to it. If people react well, I'll put the story up on AO3 and make more chapters!

Some things to note about this fic: 

It’s an X Reader and the reader is indeed the District Attorney from Who Killed Markiplier! ( So, obviously, WKM spoilers ahead! ) 

This is a Dark x Reader specifically. 

This fic is in the second person and the reader is gender neutral! 

Genderfluid Dark is canon in this fic, so I’ll be using He/She/They for Dark. 

In Space With Markiplier will also be incorporated, so spoilers for that as well. 

This story will follow the Gravity Falls story, but there’ll be added story for episodes revolving around the Pines family specifically. 

This story contains things like profanity, blood, near death experiences, talk of mortality/death, and angst!

“What has he done to you?” 

They looked so familiar. Like a far away dream. 

“Captain, you can’t possibly listen to this monster! You can’t trust him!” Mark yelled.

“My little monster, I beg of you. Open your eyes. He takes away all that you love.” She begged. 

That name.. It was like a puzzle piece. Everything snapped back into place in an instant. You weren’t a captain! You went to school for law, not to be the captain of a spaceship. 

“.. Damien?” You whispered. 

“Ugh, you’re just impossible!” Mark snapped, “How am I supposed to make the perfect story if all you do is mess it up!” 

You couldn’t help but tense up at the sudden change in tone. That was right, this wasn’t your trusted second in command. This was a man long gone, a man permanently warped by the manor. 

He twirled his cane in a clean and swift motion, aiming it towards you. 

“I’ll just have to make sure you don’t remember any of this.” He threatened. 

Dark intercepted Mark’s attempt with his sword, pushing Mark back a few feet. 

“Not on my watch. Never again.” 

Mark simply laughed, “The hero always wins. It’s the only way the story can go.” 

Dark simply grit their teeth in response, slashing the sword against Mark’s chest. Although it barely grazed, it was enough to catch him off guard. 

You watched as the two went head to head, being able to do nothing to stop either side. Even if you were willing to get in the way of the two, you had no weapon or no powers to do anything. 

Actor sputtered as Dark tore open a gash across his chest. His blood was red, but not the usual type of red. Bright red, instead of crimson. Actor was caught off guard for just a second until he scrambled back, unsheathing his cane. 

You’re sorry. Unsheathing his cane? That was insane! What was even more insane was the fact that the bottom of the cane was a dark red double sided axe. Dark seemed just as caught off guard as you were, as Mark obtained a window to slash her in the chest.

“Dark!” You called out. 

He only spared a moment to look your way, with a look in their eyes signaling that they were alright before attacking Mark once again. SImilar to Mark, her blood was an inky black. Something inspired Dark to go full force, you weren’t sure if it was you or the entire revenge pledge. 

He pierced Mark in the heart with their sword as Mark sputtered, that sickly red spilling out of his chest. He didn’t say anything after that, only heavy and labored breathing being heard from the previously lively body. 

“We best be going. The Snake never stays dead for long.” Dark said. 

You didn’t say anything as she opened a portal similar to the ones you’d seen as the captain of The Invincible. Except, it looked a bit like the Noir universe. A combination of black, white, and grey. You simply followed him inside the portal. What other choice did you have? Stay in this void until Mark’s body inevitably rose from the dead? The old Homo Necrosis didn’t sound like a fun route to go down. 

Which led you to where you are now. A sleepy town named Gravity Falls. Dark had said that the laws of the town would cover up the tracks of you two, making it harder for Mark to find you again. You still had quite a few strong words for Dark, considering he trapped you in a mirror for decades, but that was the thing. It had been decades. You didn’t know what else to do other than follow them. Mark was obviously a no-go. 

“Please, call me Dark.” He had said, “Damien and Celine are both.. Long dead. I have an apartment set up in the town, we can stay there until we know how to deal with The Snake properly.” 

“Okay.” You said, “In that case, call me Captain. The person I used to be died in that house.”

She simply nodded, “As you wish.” 

The two of you had been wandering around the town when you spotted a hiring sign for a tourist attraction. 

“We could work here.” You said, “We need some way of paying rent, right?” 

Dark hummed in thought, “It couldn’t hurt, I suppose.” 

You strolled into the attraction with Dark following close behind. You spotted an older man shuffling money while standing at the cash register. He was probably the owner, right?

“Excuse me, are you the owner?” You asked. 

He nodded, “What’s it to ya? You’re not the government, are you?” 

“No, no, nothing like that.” You said. A little like that, but you weren’t going to tell him that.

“My friend and I heard you were hiring.” 

“Great! You’re hired. Call me Mr. Pines.” He said, “You start tomorrow.”

“We’ll be there!” You smiled, as you walked back outside to talk to Dark in semi private. 

“Have you learned nothing from your district attorney days?” He teased, “Truly, though, that man was a bit too eager.” 

“Hey, it’s a job, isn’t it?” You shrugged, “Times have changed.”

“That they have.” She nodded, “Would you like to get some champagne? As a little celebration.”

“Really? Just like we used to? Even after everything that’s happened?” You raised an eyebrow. 

“Especially after everything that’s happened.” Dark said. 

You simply smiled in response as the two of you walked down the road to a nearby bar. You weren’t sure if he had said anything else to you, you were too consumed in your own thoughts. This seemed too easy, after everything that had happened. 

You were a district attorney. One that got shot at a party held by Mark himself. You didn’t blame William. Mark set everything up. A bitter man who fell victim to insanity. You had considered resenting Dark for what they did, but at the same time.. 

You knew deep down that this was a best scenario, as shitty as it was. You wouldn’t have survived. Of course Damien would pick his sister over you, even if you were close. You would’ve done the same. You did die, after all. Your time was up. 

Mark just couldn’t let you stay dead, could he? Pulling you into his games, forcing you to be his partner, his love interest. That was the thing. Dark had tried to reach you so many times, but you never remembered. Until now. What was different? Was the space adventure a finale of sorts? Was Mark’s grasp on you finally slipping? You didn’t know. 

“... Captain..”

“Captain.”

“Captain!”

You snapped back into reality, as Dark held you by the shoulders, attempting to ground you.

“Are you alright?” She asked, eyebrows knitted together.

“Yeah.. Yeah, I’m okay.” You sighed, “Just.. thinking.”

“Yeah? About what?” They raised an eyebrow. 

“He.. He really did take away everything from us. What’s the point of it all?” You asked.

He didn’t respond at first, hugging you tightly. 

“Making sure that bastard stays dead.”

Wkm x La Celestina

Who killed Markiplier is a tragicomedy, because it blends tragic aspects with comic ones elements. This reminds me of a famous Spanish classic, La Celestina. This novel, is a tragicomedy too, it tells the story of a passionate love affair that end in tragedy. Calisto, a nobleman, has fallen in love with Melibea, but she doesn’t show any interest in him. Faced with Melibea’s rejection, Calisto seeks the help of Celestina, an old woman, a ‘witch’, whose job is to make Melibea fall in love with Calisto.

Spoiler alert for La Celestina and Who Killed Markiplier

At the end all the people involved in that affair end dead. Doesn’t that sound familiar? The characters represent different roles of literature, but exaggerates them and make fun of them. Calisto is the hopeless lover and Melibea, is the lady that has to be win over. They are two very different types of stories but they share some characteristics. This story mixes both comedy and tragedy. In both stories there is influence of dark magic, Melibea falls in love with Calisto because of Celestina’s influence and Actor Mark seeks revenge and organizes the party because of the house’s Entity influence. The characters’ s roles are used for comedy and made fun of. For example, there is a big exaggeration in the detectives, coronel, and Benjamin (the butler) roles. Calipso and Mark are pitiful characters and are the origin of all the problems of the story. In the end, there is only tragedy and death.

WHO KILLED MARKIPLIER + WILFORD MOTHERLUVIN WARFSTACHE SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

so damien, mark, and will have been friends since they were young. there is a woman named celine in all of this, who is damiens twin sister. mark dates celine because he loves her, but she cheats on him with will. so mark of course is beyond fucking angry at will, even though it was actively celines choice to cheat on him. so mark invites them all over for a dinner, all of them being damien, will, abe the detective (not an ego), anddd i think thats it?? other than us, the viewer, the district attorney, who happens to look a LOT like damien. mark dies. will doesnt care too much because he understands mark was angry at him, and damien gets upset with will because yknow, their friend just died and hes kinda nonchalant. so with abe, we start to try and find clues of who killed markiplier, of which will is always a bit suspicious. All the sudden, celine knocks on the door, and lets everyone know that something is happening that involves black/ evil magic.

everyones kinda like, woah, huh? and she just kinda, forces everyone to do some stuff? she does something with a crystal ball in a room, upon another character (forget his name) says "hey, ive prepped for this, we gotta get out of here or youll all die". damien says no, goes in to try and help his sister, and will and abe fight because will is sus. will accidentally shoots abe through the heart, and while we're trying to wrestle the gun away from him, he shoots us, and we canonically die. we wake up in a black void, where damien and celine are there. they explain to us that actor mark has actively possessed damiens body (through the crystal ball thing celine i did i guess??) and has the ability to basically warp time and space, and create his own personal timeline in a way. but before we "died", damien had an encounter with mark (where he learned this info, celine already knew and was trying to protect him ig), and this is where actor mark tells him "im going to make my own story, the one where shit goes my way, but every story needs a villain" and he actively pushes damien to be said villain. anyways, we meet in the void, get informed, and celine tells us she can do something (i cant remember), but whatever happens, whatever she does, results in all three of us, damien, celine, and us, repossessing the district attorneys body. but considering i think it involves black magic, damien, or the body, now known as darkipier, has dark powers as well and is a little bit goofy! anyways, dark decides to be actors villain, but in the way he doesnt want him to be.

Darks entire personality to me is ironic because his main goal is to literally be as fucking annoying as possible, fuck up all of actors storylines and basically just be a pain in his fucking ass throughout the stories he creates

anyways, we wake up to will sitting on a nearby bench, clutching damiens little staff (because he had one), and we can see hes yknow..... fucking shocked! is beyond happy that we arent dead, and proceeds to be delusional, think its all just some funny sick joke, and stumbles off screen calling for damien. and this is where it gets kinda complicated??? so, think of like, each of marks videos as well,,, a video, or a comic book! actor can create videos of his own, and proceed to crawl into the white space of the comic books. dark and wilford (who becomes wilford after the WKM incident, william J barnum quite literally no longer exists) can also do that. each character has their own story, which is obviously written! but william was pushed out of his character because he ran into a scenario that wasnt scripted for him, which is where he becomes wilford warfstache. so what he does, is he spends years hopping into other peoples storylnies, trying to break them out of character because hes the only one who is truly aware. and then "wilford motherloving warfstache happens", where abe comes back (because he wasnt supposed to die), and is actively hunting him down because he killed us, the district attorney.

all he remembers is, the stuff that his character needs to know. he doesnt know where hes been ig, hes just the classic detective noir character. he knows hes hunting down warf, doesnt need to know the specifics bc his CHARACTER already knows it. but, he encounters warfstache! manages to capture him, which im presuming wasnt meant to happen, because this is where he realizes: 'wait.. i dont know anything about where youve been, i dont know any of the specifics, i dont actually have all the places youve supposedly been'. and warfstache manages to break him out of character. abe ofc is freaking the fuck out because that technically means none of this is real, and none of it makes sense. so warf technically presses pause on abes youtube video, and says 'hey, you need to destress, lets have some fun before you have to go back to your story'. because in a sense, wills story already ended, so warf has to create his own story line. he has no destined future. so they dance and have fun because inevitably, abe will have to resume his own story, and warf is gonna be left alone with nobody bc nobody is sentient! which is why hes constantly trying to fuck shit up too! breaks in suddenly in the middle of videos, causes havoc, because hes trying to create a scenario that breaks the person out of their character, so theyre aware like him. anyways, he inevitably starts to go insane and desperate, which is why hes known for 'haha shooty shooty bang bang!' because hes just, kinda fucked in the head i think. anyways we havent had a continuation in awhile really, but thats where they all kinda are atm!!

Alas, I have not read Macbeth and therefor cannot judge or analyse you on your references. If I miss or misinterpret anything blame it on that. English classics are still difficult for me in terms of english, for the most part, so I tend to avoid them. Schiller, Büchner or Goethe references are very welcome though. /j

I love how everything, even before the last paragraph (the revelation) points to the fact that this is not the height of the plot, the story reaching it's climax of an organic development but a perfected, practiced tale being told to the audience.

"Once upon a time: all as it should be."

The very first line, fairy tale opening. This is the Actor introducing his audience to the tale. I really love how fond you seem to be of repetitions. How it is repeated again in the last paragraph, promising that nothing will change.

"Revenge is always predestined, a necessary heartbeat. If it is a good story, it must be fulfilled, because every good story is a promise kept, like ‘till death do us part’ or ‘I’ll protect you’."

Well, this is just foreshadowing to DAMIEN in the best way possible. Again, drilling in the fact that Celine is a character in this, by the Actor perfected, tale. Repeated actions over dozens of the same day all coming to a climax where she buries the axe in Marks chest. Revenge being fulfilled, planned, leading to Damien taking the leading role. As planned.

To me, it almost seems like sentences in italics are either thoughts planted by the Actor or direct comments of his (I'm obsessed with him, I can't help it).

Your use of stylistic devices is fantastic. The frequent use of anaphoras, parallelisms and repetitions combined with your fantastic use of metaphors? Perfection

First of all, I swear I'm going to put a Woyzeck-quote in a piece of writing just for you :"D ✨

In this piece of writing, by the way, I didn't so much refer to the plot of Macbeth as use fragments of its more known speech because intertextuality is a wonderful thing:

Small allusions, I know, but first of all: they sound good ✨ On the other hand, the mental image of theatre evoked by these lines are to further build associations that are meant to suggest the reality-creating function of a story (which is an important point of the characters in WKM?, especially in relation to Actor and the DAMIEN-video).

The loop-mechanic, the act of continuous repetition, also evokes a sense of rehearsal, which can develop the classic rules of storytelling and the methods that can give a story its most powerful form. One might think, of course, that a self-regarding all-mighty story-creator like Actor would be aware of them and use them to the verge of obsession.

HOWEVER. Of course, there has to be a 'however' :"D

You point very well here to the self-reflexive nature of the text and, more importantly, the story, probably my favorite canon element of the Markiplier Cinematic Universe.

Because Actor may be aware of the elements that make up a good ol' perfect story, but on the one hand: fiction is not life, and on the other hand Mark as a writer (consciously or in his usual 'sounded cool' way) has very cleverly in DAMIEN subverted the audience's expectation and literally put a gun on the wall that didn't fire and said 'fuck Chekhov'.

Basically, he managed to take his Markiplier-promises to the level of storytelling meta-criticism. Brava.

So this fanfiction was trying to be a lyrical expression of that idea, as Celine, thinking like Actor, tries to adjust and win in this twisted world, because until the story is over, she can win. (The tragedy: the story will never be over.)

From that point of view, your point about the italicized sentences is absolutely correct, on some level Actor did indeed plant those ideas there, but they are more Celine's (otherwise correct-seeming) assumptions about Actor's strategies.

However, Celine's downfall in this situation is, ironically, that she is trying to play Actor's game, following in his footsteps, trying to make sense of his arcane, stupid story-beats, trying to use them to her (and Damien's) advantage. However, all this does is make us go round and round in circles and we just tire ourselves out.

Maybe, a solution (won't solve everything, though, some things can't be fixed, and that must be accepted): if you don't play by the rules, there is no play.

You can only break out of the loop. But look, it's cracking around the edges like ice anyway. Leave the gun on the wall. Here's an axe, more practical.

Fuck Chekhov.

But hey, that's just a theory, a dead author's theory! (Next time our lesson respectfully will be 'fuck Roland Barthes', just watch :"D)

I’m still putting things together but we have origin stories for some of them. In particular Dark, Wilford and Actor Mark.

Spoilers I guess?

In who killed Markiplier, Actor Mark gets killed (?) and takes over the Body of his childhood friend Damien. Damien and his twin sister Celine take over the body of the viewer. The mansion where wkm takes place is also possessed by some sort of entity. Basically Dark is the mixture of Damien, Celine and this what-ever-it-is.

So Wilford (the colonel) is also a childhood friend of Mark and Damien. He basically goes insane bc not only did he shoot the viewer but also his dead friends come back to live.

Celine was married to Mark but she left him for Wilford and Mark wanted to get revenge on him so he tried to frame Wilford for his murder.

(That’s how I understand stand it anyways xD)

Other egos like Illinois, Yance and Engineer are introduced at other points. Also Heehoo iswm was introduced on the channel that was deleted. (I didn’t watch the videos so I can’t tell anything about him 🙈)

Can someone explain them all to me. They sound self-explanatory in a sense, Darkiplier sounds like the dark side of Mark, and etc. But what is the Lore? Please reply, anyone.
