he was still navigating the weight of being y/n’s partner and step-dad to her three-year-old daughter, liv—a role he’d embraced with fierce love but gnawing self-doubt. y/n’s text from earlier replayed in his mind:

liv had a bad day at daycare. some kid upset her, made her cry. i’m stuck at the hospital, can you get her?

his heart had twisted at the thought of liv’s tears, and now, as he parked, his black hoodie rumpled from a day of errands, he steeled himself to be her rock.

inside, the daycare buzzed with the chaos of pickup time—kids shrieking, parents chatting, the smell of crayons and apple juice thick in the air. matt’s sneakers squeaked on the tiled floor as he signed in, his eyes scanning for liv. her teacher, ms. clara, met him with a gentle frown.

“she’s been off since lunchtime,” she said softly. “a boy teased her about her bunny. she’s over there.” she pointed to a corner where liv sat, her curls a tangled halo, her stuffed bunny clutched to her chest. her little face was splotchy, her big eyes—carbon copies of y/n’s—glossy with hurt.

matt’s throat tightened, a protective ache blooming in his chest. “thanks,” he murmured, crouching a few feet from liv, his voice as soft as he could make it. “hey, livvy. it’s me, sweetheart. ready to go home?”

liv looked up, her lips trembling, and something in matt cracked at the sight of her pain. she nodded, barely a whisper of movement, and shuffled over, her tiny hand reaching for his. her fingers, sticky from some forgotten snack, curled into his palm, and the trust in that touch nearly undid him. he lifted her into his arms, her bunny pressed between them, and grabbed her backpack, his heart pounding with the need to make her world right again.

in the car, he buckled her into her car seat, brushing a curl from her face. “rough day, huh?” he said, keeping his tone light, his eyes meeting hers in the rearview mirror. “wanna tell me about it?”

liv hugged her bunny tighter, her voice small. “tommy said my bunny’s ugly. he said it’s old and i’m dumb for liking it.” her words wobbled, and a fresh tear rolled down her cheek, glinting in the fading light.

matt’s hands tightened on the wheel, a flash of anger swallowed by the need to comfort her. “livvy, listen to me,” he said, his voice steady but thick with emotion. “your bunny’s not ugly. it’s special because it’s yours, because it’s been with you through everything. tommy doesn’t get that, and that’s his loss. you’re not dumb—you’re the smartest, coolest kid i know.”

she sniffled, her eyes searching his in the mirror. “really?”

“really,” he said, forcing a smile past the lump in his throat. “how about we ditch this sad stuff? let’s get ice cream and hit the park. you and me, kiddo. sound good?”

her face brightened, just a flicker, but it was enough. “chocolate ice cream?” she asked, her voice hopeful.

“you got it,” matt said, his heart lifting. “chocolate for my favorite girl.”

they stopped at an ice cream truck near liv’s favorite park, the one with the yellow slide she could climb for hours. matt ordered her a small chocolate cone, the kind that always left her chin a mess, and got himself a vanilla soft serve, something simple to keep his hands busy. they sat on a bench, liv’s legs swinging, her bunny propped beside her as she licked her cone, chocolate smudging her cheeks. matt wiped it with a napkin, his touch gentle, his eyes tracing her face like he could memorize every freckle, every fleeting expression.

“better?” he asked, taking a bite of his own cone, the cold sweetness grounding him.

liv nodded, her smile shy but real. “yummy,” she said, then leaned her head against his arm, her warmth a quiet anchor. matt’s chest ached with love, with the weight of being her safe place, even if he still wondered if he was enough.

“wanna tell me more about tommy?” he asked, his voice soft, giving her space. “or we can just eat and forget him.”

she sighed, a big, dramatic toddler sigh. “he was mean. but you’re not mean. you’re nice, matt.” her words were so earnest, so pure, they hit him like a wave, stealing his breath.

“you’re nice, too, livvy,” he said, his voice rough. “the nicest. don’t let anyone make you feel less, okay? you’re my superstar.”

she grinned, chocolate smudged on her nose, and matt laughed, the sound shaky with emotion. they finished their cones, and he carried her to the playground, her bunny tucked under his arm.

he pushed her on the swing, her laughter ringing out as she soared, her curls flying in the breeze. “higher!” she squealed, and matt pushed harder, his hands steady, his heart full. they raced to the slide, matt pretending to lose as she scrambled up the ladder, her giggles echoing as he caught her at the bottom, spinning her until she was dizzy with joy.

as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the park in a soft twilight, they collapsed onto the grass, liv nestled between his legs, picking at dandelions. matt wove a flower crown, his fingers clumsy but careful, and placed it on her head, the yellow blooms glowing against her curls. she beamed, her earlier hurt forgotten, and leaned back against his chest, her bunny in her lap.

“you’re the best, matt,” she said, her voice sleepy, content. then, so quiet it could’ve been a dream, she looked up, her eyes wide and trusting. “dad, can you hold my bunny for me?”

the word—dad—landed like a thunderbolt, shattering matt’s heart and piecing it back together in the same breath. his breath hitched, his eyes flooding with tears he couldn’t stop, his throat so tight he could barely breathe. dad. she’d never called him that, not in all the months of bedtime stories, scraped knees, and tea parties. he was matt, her protector, her playmate, but dad? that was a gift he’d never dared to hope for, a word so big it felt like it could swallow him whole.

he blinked hard, trying to keep his voice steady, but it came out raw, trembling. “yeah, livvy,” he said, taking the bunny with shaking hands, holding it like it was sacred. “i’ll hold it for you, sweetheart.”

she smiled, oblivious to the earthquake she’d caused, and snuggled closer, her flower crown slipping, her breathing soft and even. “i love you, dad,” she mumbled, her words slurring with sleep, and matt’s tears fell then, silent and unstoppable, streaking his cheeks as he wrapped his arms around her.

“i love you, too, livvy,” he whispered, his voice breaking, his heart a beautiful, gut-wrenching mess of joy and awe. he wasn’t her dad by blood, but in that moment, with her warmth against him and her bunny in his hands, he was hers in every way that mattered. the doubts he’d carried—was he enough? could he be what y/n and liv needed?—crumbled under the weight of their trust, their love, that single, perfect word from liv.

the park was quiet, the sky deepening to dusk, but matt didn’t move, holding liv as she drifted off, her flower crown askew, her bunny safe in his grip. y/n would be home soon, and he’d try to tell her, his voice thick with wonder, about the moment their little girl made him whole. for now, he sat there, his daughter in his arms, and let the overwhelming, heart-shattering love of being dad carve itself into his soul.

TAKING SHIFTS- A classic Stanley Pines adopts the shapeshifter AU-> Little info dump

Basic gist of it is that post portal accident, Stanley is trying his damndest to get his brother back by fixing the portal- Which logically requires that Stanley get all the journals so that he actually has a full blueprint to look at.

However, in his search for any of the journals, he discovers some kind of top secret tree bunker- Classic Ford antics. He investigates the bunker, only to find some kind of kid monster, who is under the impression that Stan is his own brother and tries to kill him. The only thing that convinces the creature that Stan is NOT Ford, is the fact that Stan has a mullet and his brother does not. Would you be surprised to discover that the mullet would play a deeper role in things than at first glance? Not me, but I think it’s very funny anyways.

The monster kid is revealed to be some kind of alien shapeshifter thing, and upon realizing that Stanley is some kind of Ford doppleganger, the shapeshifter suddenly becomes the most clingy kid ever, following Stan around throughout the bunker like a lost duckling. Stanley tries to be chill about it, but the memories of being attacked are still pretty fresh in his brain.

After a bit the two will leave the bunker, yadda yadda yadda dialogue, and Stanley will be concerned to find that this kid hasn’t had the best upbringing in the world so far- If the limited English and big eyed staring at the sky was anything to go by. While Stan has half a mind to leave this monster kid to the wild, he apparently has these weird issues with abandonment. Something about seeing himself in the little monster kid. So he takes him back to the shack, helping the shapeshifter pick a name that isn’t a weird number. They eventually land on Simon, which is a play on Simon Says, because of course any name idea Stanley has it just HAS to be a pun.

And of course, taking in this shapeshifter will trigger changes to the timeline that will affect how things will go from here on out. A lot of wholesome, father kid bonding and found family stuff.

Other unmentioned information and idea snippets:

-The journals are found much sooner than in canon, which means Ford is brought back sooner than in canon. Journal 2 is found first, due to the fact that Stanley has Simon (Shifty) enrolled in elementary school, which just so happens to be were one of the journals are hidden. Simon finds it and recognizes it- And Stan is so proud. Meanwhile, later on journal 3 is found by Soos in a situation similar to canon, but like- Soosified.

-Stanley is constantly wracked with guilt as time goes on, because he will hear about of make a realization about the poor treatment of Simon by Ford and his assistant in the past- All while Stanley is still actively working to bring him back. Simon doesn’t know that it’s FORD that Stan is trying to bring back, which will only result in some betrayal later on when Ford inevitably returns.

-Simon, Tate, and Soos act almost as siblings, due to circumstances that bring them together at different points in time. Tate is Simon’s best friend, a friendship which had blossomed when Emma-May showed up to the Pines cabin door, demanding that she see her ex husband and that she has some WORDS to say to the homewrecking scientist who ruined everything. Stanley had never been more confused about anything- But while Stanley is trying his best to save the situation, Tate and Simon hit it off quickly despite the broken language barrier. Meanwhile, Soos come in later when both Simon and Stan are a bit older. Stan and Soos’s relationship is similar to how it played out in canon, but Simon gets really jealous. May or may not try to kill Soos because of it- But it’s ok cuz once Soos’s natural charm infects Simon, the big brother little brother dynamic is born.

-Simon practically idolizes Stan, and makes it a point to have his human form reflect that. He has a mullet, and it reminds him that Stan is Stan- Even after Stan cuts the mullet off so he could be a bit more business appropriate. Simon also has little freckles cuz he saw the little baby Boyish Dan and just immediately was like- Oh I want those too-

-The shapeshifter will also have his own little book of “forms” he could take. He has photos and information of various creatures, things, and people- I want you to envision how this book looks and is treated like a Pokémon card collection binder. The shapeshifter may get into photography. By the time the little twins Dipper and Mable show up, it’s not the journals that they find- But Simon’s shifting scrapbook. Which is how they find themselves getting involved in the spooky stuff in the first place.

-Because of Simon and Fords earlier arrival, the younger Pines twins adventures in Gravity Falls are a tad bit tweaked. Simon is a very powerful shapeshifter who is plenty protective of his little niblings- The Mcguckets are somewhat healthy with the whole divorced situation, and Bill is not an issue alongside Gideon… Everything else is free game though. Pretty silly.

- The way that Fiddleford is introduced to the duo is that at some point, Stan gets his memories of Simon wiped causing severe emotional distress- And it’s lowkey kinda heartbreaking. (The blind eye sees Simon shifting in front of Stan and assumes the worst.) Once Stan gets his memories back, it’s the beginning of a warpath. (And also the end of Fiddlefords crazy cultist arc- Which is good for Tate who really likes hanging around his bestie.)

-Hijinks WILL ensue, especially after Ford comes back. Probably some other tidbits I’m missing, but that’s a problem for another day- If this interest you folks anyways- Lemmy know if this is interesting or anything and feel free to ask questions. I haven’t thought so much as to how Bill gets defeated earlier and everything- But if anyone has any cool ideas I’d be open to it. Unsure if I’ll ever get to writing this one 😂

I do see some of the point about the tradewife talk... But I also think that we are kinda forgetting a pretty important part of the situation here: those tradwife fantasy are literally just classic romance novel scenario.

We have to remember that Harlequin romance novel, and similar things, are the vast, VAST majority of things that afab people read. And it has been the case for literally generation. The Astarte being a big scary dude that take care of the woman and impregnate her is really no different than a "viking kidnap you and make you his wife" or a "vampire trick and seduce you". Those fantasy coexist with the fact that noncon is the most common "kink" for afab: it's exploring all the fear and anxiety of rape culture and patriarchie. Some people do so with writing power fantasy, while other write it about them being happy in that systhem, being happy about having the choice of pregnancy and sex being taken away from them. All of that is about control, about being able to stop by simply not reading anymore.

So yeah, while it is not for us (the queer and marginalised, and I AM putting myself into that category, I don't even like reader insert!), I will absolutely defend their right to create that stuff. It literally is just a different kind of enjoying the franchise, no different that when cishet dude write 200k epic bolter porn power fantasy, wich there are a LOT MORE than any queer warhammer fanfic. We cannot gatekeep fandom, we cannot act like we queer have the one and only true way of creating fancontent. I always advocate for understanding and kindness in fandom, and this trend of shitting on other people (and sometime it *is* shitting on them, it's not just polite talk) in the warhammer fandom is very disapointing.

I disagree with your premise that tradwife fantasies are identical to classic romance novel scenarios. If anything, romance and bodice-ripper heroines align more closely with Mary Sues.

Classic romance novels typically center a heroine who starts out powerless or disadvantaged in terms of her class, wealth, or social status. Her narrative arc revolves around gaining personal empowerment through love: finding a partner who recognises her true worth and asserting her own desires. Even when the fantasy involves ravishment or protection (the "strong alpha male" trope), the heroine is often the transformative force in the relationship, reshaping the hero or the dynamics between them. She is a character in motion — physically (being abducted by pirates, moving to a widowed duke's castle to serve as governess, running away from the arranged marriage her father intends for her) and thematically, moving towards agency, voice, and choice, even if her journey is framed within a romantic story. Her victory is the relationship itself, achieved on her terms.

Tradwife fantasies, by contrast, focus on giving up personal agency in exchange for security, love, and approval. As I mentioned in a previous post, tradwife characters often start out powerful (Yvraine being one example) and then choose (or "choose") to settle into a predefined submissive role where domesticity, nurturing, and submission are the ends, not just the means. The tradwife fantasy valorises passivity and dependency as virtues — the tradwife character is admired because she is static: she stays home, serves her husband, raises children, and submits. Unlike romance heroines, who usually end their stories in a better social position or with greater personal empowerment, tradwife characters often end out worse (from a contemporary feminist perspective).

But the most telling difference between romance/bodice-ripper fantasies and tradwife fantasies lies in their detractors.

Romance and bodice-ripper stories have long been dismissed and mocked by cishet men as fantasies written by "unfulfilled women," just like Mary Sues are written by "silly fangirls."

Tradwife archetypes are, to a significant extent, embraced by cishet men. The meme of Yvraine being Guilliman's "Eldar waifu" started in male-dominated fan spaces on platforms like 4chan and Reddit.

It's easy to see the difference. Romance and bodice-ripper heroines typically stand in opposition to patriarchal ideals, disobeying societal and parental restrictions to pursue "forbidden" relationships or giving in to passion, especially at a time when "good girls" were taught to suppress sexual or ambitious desires. Tradwife heroines, on the other hand, uphold patriarchal ideals. These two things are not the same.

A few other points I'd like to address:

Some people [explore "all the fear and anxiety of rape culture and patriarchie"] with writing power fantasy, while other write it about them being happy in that systhem, being happy about having the choice of pregnancy and sex being taken away from them.

No one should EVER have the choice of pregnancy and sex taken away from them for any reason. ANY reason. Even if it "makes them happy" (does it really make them happy or are they just conditioned and expected to believe it does?).

It's entirely possible to write power-exchange/noncon/rape culture fantasies that are not tradwifey, or which examine the tradwife trope in light of the broader political and cultural context.

I will absolutely defend their right to create that stuff.

As I have stated in previous posts, I'm fundamentally opposed to censorship in fandom myself. People are free to create whatever they want.

However, that doesn't mean we can't talk about contemporary fandom trends and how they either support or challenge dominant heteronormative culture.

To quote myself again, the issue is that tradwife content actively alienates (some) marginalised fans. Tradwife narratives can feel like microaggressions — they are conservative heteronormative gender roles in a new hat, presenting female passivity, domesticity, and loss of agency as aspirational.

Once tradwife content gains ground in a fandom space, it crowds out other forms of self-expression. Have you heard the saying, "if you invite both wolves and sheep, you will only get wolves"? I have seen fandom spaces welcome tradwife content in the spirit of being open to all shipping and all voices — and marginalised fans started trickling away. Not dramatically, not slamming the door, just quietly losing interest and eventually disengaging.

Bolter porn has not, in my experience, had the same effect.

We cannot gatekeep fandom

No one is gatekeeping fandom. Gatekeeping is when someone won't let others into the house. Tradwife content creators are already in the house — on AO3, on discord, on tumblr. No gate is being kept from them. On the contrary, other people are leaving the party because they no longer feel comfortable with the vibe.

What's happening right now is that some of us are having conversations about our experiences and examining the tradwife character archetype from feminist and literary analysis perspectives to articulate why the trope rubs us the wrong way.

I understand that this kind of academic discourse can feel like a vivisection to those fans who do find comfort and empowerment in depictions of traditional gender roles.

But this kind of meta-discourse is necessary to keep a fandom healthy and viable — and I welcome tradwife content creators to share why they enjoy this trope as well, to get the full picture. ❤

chewing on it here: one day i had a thought on sonic-tails, surge-kit, and tangle-whisper as foils/parallels to each other

they all have a duo dynamic that can be compared - sonic/surge/tangle as the 'impulsive ones', adding energy to the mix and acting as the face of the duo. tails/kit/whisper as the 'follow', coincidentally all canines, tagging behind in the shadow and typically content to.

but sonic and tails synergize. they're clear and open with each other; have a deep understanding and trust; act for the other's benefit in a way they both agree on, without treading over the other.

surge and kit don't. they trust because the trust was already built in - they run on a bridge that only stands because of their own footfalls, stay upright on two wheels because the bike's already moving. if they stop at any time, actually question it, all the moldy weak spots will show themselves. they don't really know each other. surge leads, and kit follows, because that's the dynamic they're meant to have. so kit's recent planning and masterminding behind surge's back is, really, to be expected.

tangle and whisper are in a weird spot... because as much as tangle resembles sonic, and takes a role like his in their dynamic, she's more like the follower; more like tails or kit. when tangle moves towards something, the goal is already in sight and she's pulling herself towards it. whereas someone like sonic drives forwards - like whisper does - chasing a goal that's just out of reach, an ambition they know is out there. whisper's the one with the Plot, and tangle follows behind in her wake as support and morale. as impulsive as she is, tangle is generally not decisive. whisper is. it makes sense that tangle and whisper would be the outlier of these three, since they're the only ones that weren't made for each other; sonic existed first and tails was made molded to him, and surge and kit were made to directly parallel that dynamic, concurrently with each other. but tangle and whisper are entirely separate and grew to come together.

my thoughts? i want tangle to do more of her own stuff and develop her own agency and personality, instead of boiling off individual interest to become a support character. she wasn't always a follower - she had traits that would have driven her well, pushed her forwards, give her a reason to effect change on the world instead of always reacting to the change forced on her. (they were either beaten out of her by the Plot, or she lost faith in herself - a shame, really.) even something as shallow as having a bit of an ego and wanting to show off...

One of my recurring concerns about my Legundo theorizing is that I'm nitpicking his words too much. I pay a lot of attention to specific wording or phrases or the connotations of certain things and I'm like. Staring. Very intently.

Something something "staying on the treetops to avoid the danger on the ground" something something "the danger from within. The danger from all around" what does "the danger from within" mean. Does he remember anything now? From within would imply the inherent danger of himself. How does one reconcile the memories you made now versus memories you lost? Who you used to be compared to who you are now? Is he remembering? Is that the danger from within?

To what extent is Legundo knowingly, and actively, connected to Decem. To what extent does he willingly work with or alongside decem? Does he remember anything? Or had he just discovered new information from other sources?

What's with the cultist location from the 100 nights video? I feel like we brushed over that too much Decem wasn't there but their influence certainly was. What is up with the cultists. Is there a cult surrounding decem? Why? How well known is their presence in the multiverse? Is decem both the group and also a specific guy? I don't remember some of this and I can't currently check but what is Happening. Why is happening. Who. What.

My one major question right now is How Much Does Legundo Remember? Because depending on that answer I get to figure out which list of next questions/theories I get to run on

Because option a is Legundo still remembers Nothing. Which means all of his information has been given by one of the various entities we've encountered thus far, or, books he's found on the subject matter. What does he know given his information sources? Which sources does he rely on mostly? Given the undoubtedly biased information, who does he listen to? What has Decem told him? Have the Alterans made any sort of contact? I assume not given the fact that I don't know that they've been mentioned by name by legundo in canon. But how well known is either group in the general multiverse? Legundo's not the only guy hopping worlds presumably given the hunters video, which isn't specifically relevant to this but how well known is Decem and the Alterans? How public is their conflict? How exactly does the whole transport between worlds sequence go? Can Legundo and Decem interact in the interim between worlds? How has Legundo come to the conclusion that despite their more violent habits towards him currently come to the conclusion of frenemies? What deal was made? How much does Legundo understand about the deal given his information sources?

Option b is that he remembers a little bit. Not a lot still, not his role in Decem, but he's starting to remember certain things about the way Decem works. The obelisks, the on/off inducators, the name of the group, etc. Also less relevant but Decem was able to appear in the same world as Legundo at one point. I fucking forgot about that the warrior just Showed Up presumably. They were ominous about it too. Anyways. Back on topic. Theres so much information variation available in option b and c that makes me want to gnaw on my keyboard again.

Option c btw is that Legundo remembers most of it but is missing stuff still and I have so many questions but a lot of them are still general inquiries about worldbuilding and also the general interaction dynamic of the involved parties.

Option d is that he remembers everything but has at some point had a moral conflict between who he is now, what he's learned about the way Decem operates, etc. And has decided he's mad at them or something (overly simplified and poor wording but Man idk) and ergo has refused to return to work with Decem again or something at which point I still have several questions about his joining of decem, his involvement with Decem, etc. And I'm still trying (failing) to decipher answers from things I'm still not sure were 100% intentionally worded so I just suffer I guess but anyways what deal???? What does the deal mean in each context?? What did Decem offer him? What does he do in return?

Option e is Legundo remembers everything and is just being weird and undercover again but that doesn't explain much still actually. This one feels really unlikely so I'm hanging it on my crack theories board with Decem Is a guy and it's Legundo hence their constant badgering of the poor man and also Decem doesn't know how to get legundo to remember so they're just tricking him into doing stuff for them anyways via engaging in the methods of gaslight gatekeep girlboss I have no evidence for this one but you gotta leave doors open yknow

Also how much does Decem know?? Are they free?? Didn't the alterans put them in some kind of prison at some point. How did the warrior just Appear to harass legs during the dimension door episode. Was it the dimension doors?? I need to go through everything and compile the lore bits I'm. What. What he doin. Why. Who knows anything even.

Also why was The Warrior the one they sent to go get Legundo?? Did they just Assume he defected or something and want his ass dead?? THEY HAVE CONVERSATIONS. EVEN IF THEY'RE WEIRD AND ONE-WAY. THEY KIND OF TALK. I have No Idea what Legundo does or does not know right now and I also have no idea what anybody has told him. Everybody could be lying too I don't know. Also how does the interactions between members of decem go?? We don't have much to go on other than a couple clips here or there and even then that only says so much???? Some of this works on the assumption that decem were close to each other but if we work on the assumption that they were largely friendly but otherwise neutral or just kind of pushing for the same cause for other inexplicable reasons I'm shuffling my questions list again.

And you understand correctly, it IS canon Loop that helps all the roleswap Travelers one by one after helping Siffrin escape their timeloop I haven't officially figured out the order Loop helps the Travelers, but my current theory is: Loop helps Siffrin first (as you obviously point out :3) T!Odile is second T!Isabeau is third T!Mira is fourth T!Bonnie is last and final and then Loop has a "return to sender" moment when they crash into Siffrin's universe again and they exchange coins and also catch up! By that time Loop would've gotten SO MUCH character development it'd be fun to see what Siffrin thinks of them. But honestly??? Nothing is set in stone! I could change my mind, decide I want T!Bonnie to be the first one for Loop to help, or shove everything in a different order! And you guys are totally allowed to cook up your own Order of Events and Timeloops too! I'm not fussed at all on this matter :3 There are too many ideas and theories to not play with, y'know? It'd be a shame to shut those doors of possibility because of something little ol' me said!

also in the same way you have to see armand choosing the coven over louis as him deciding between two options he sees as bad, believing one is not viable, and committing to the other wholeheartedly (hence him directing the trial and just generally playing an active role in madeleine claudia and louis's executions) so too must you view his decision to stay with louis after the trial as him realising the coven is not a viable option for him anymore (because louis kills them all) and committing to louis wholeheartedly instead because he's his only other option.

MAN I'm seriously so sad about season 2. Bc I wish act 2 had the same emotional impact on me as it appears to have on so many others. But rn I'm just somewhere between unable to care and actively annoyed by some of those writing decisions. Seriously the more I think about it the less I like it.
