Joseph Merrick ist bekannt durch die schweren körperlichen Deformationen, an denen er gelitten hat.

Josephs Mutter starb, woraufhin sein Vater eine neue Ehe einging. Seine Stiefmutter kann den entstellten Joseph nicht ausstehen und zwingt seinen Vater dazu, ihn auszustoßen. Zwar findet Joseph eine Arbeit, kann diese jedoch nicht lange ausüben, da dies seine Missbildungen und die damit verbundene Schwäche nicht erlaubt. Er sieht sich dazu gezwungen, sich einem Jahrmarkt anzuschließen, der ihn als vermeintliches ,,Monster" präsentiert. In David Lynchs schwarz-weiß Drama trifft der englische Arzt Dr. Treves auf Merrick, der unter jämmerlichen und menschenunwürdigen Bedingungen auf dem Jahrmarkt lebt und arbeitet. Dr.Treves gewährt Jospeh in einem Hospital Unterkunft. Nun darf sich Joseph endlich als den eloquenten und liebenswürdigen Mann entfachen, der er schon immer gewesen ist.
