The Guyver (1991)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plot: Sean Barker (Jack Armstrong) stumbles across an alien suit of armour which boosts his abilities by huge amounts. However while he may not have been looking for it, other people - with more sinister motives - are.
Tumblr media
Review: The Guyver is based on a Japanese manga about a teenager who becomes host to a bio-mechanical suit of alien armour, and fights against the evil Cronos corporation.
A few of the key elements are retained for this American remake, but most are tinkered with in some way, shape, or form. Sho Fukamachi becomes Sean Barker, and he is no longer a high school student, but a martial arts student in his mid-twenties. Segawa is no longer his best friend, but instead his girlfriends father, a scientist who works at Cronos and steals the Guyver armour. The changes continue in this vein, and the story has any intelligence drained from it, as Cronos send a gang of moronic mutants after the armour.
The action sequences are the best bits of a fairly stupid film, only really of any value as a cult oddity. It’s a shame, because quite frankly there are enough interesting elements in the mythology to create a very entertaining film - especially in this era of superheroes. Of course it could never directly translate the manga series, but it could have ripped off Chronicle and done some good business (although the new, gritty Power Rangers reboot looks to have got there first on that score). Mark Hamill receives top billing, but plays a supporting role as a CIA agent who gets mutated into something weird and then killed.
In the hands of someone with a clue, The Guyver could be a decent action hero series with comic-book styling, and probably wouldn’t cost the earth to film. Sadly it fell to someone who calls himself ‘Screaming Mad George’, and winds up about as bad as you’d expect.

Cult Movie Essentials: Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter (1994)
Directed by Jeff Burr, Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter, is the fifth movie of the Puppet Masterfranchise. It was filmed back-to-back with Puppet Master 4 so as you would expect the movie is a straight continuation with Rick Myers (Gordon Currie) being arrested under the suspicion of having caused the murders of Dr. Piper and Baker. Luckily, Dr. Jennings (Ian Ogilvy), the new director of the…

[CRITIQUE] Air Force One (1997)
[CRITIQUE] Air Force One (1997) #Critique #AirForceOne #HarrisonFord #GaryOldman

Musical Monday...errr...Wednesday
Tumblr media
A delayed, but treasured, Musical Monday highlight kicks off the middle of this week. This is a show which I severely love and hope to see again soon. Not much preamble needed, so let’s just let the highlights do the talking. Here we go!
Musical Monday date: 10/30/2019
Musical: The Color Purple
Book, Music, and Lyrics: Marsha Norman, Brenda Russell and Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, and Brenda Russell and Allee Willis and Stephen Bray
Broadway Run: ORIGINAL CAST= December 1st, 2005 - February 24, 2008
                            REVIVAL CAST= December 10, 2015 - January 8, 2017
Awards Won: ORIGINAL CAST= Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical (LaChanze)/2006 Theatre World Awards (Elisabeth Withers-Mendes, Felicia P. Fields); 2007 Theatre World Award (Fantasia Barrino)
REVIVAL CAST= Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Cynthia Erivo)/Dram Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Cynthia Erivo), Outstanding Director of a Musical (John Doyle)/2016 Theatre World Award (Cynthia Erivo, Danielle Brooks)
Other: Adapted from the 1985 Oscar-nominated film of the same name which starred Whoopi Goldberg (Celie), Danny Glover (Albert), Margaret Avery (Shug), Oprah Winfrey (Sofia), and Willard E. Pugh (Harpo). The book, from which the film was adapted, came out in 1982, written by Alice Walker.
Fun Fact: Never have I cried harder in an Act Two torch song than the night I saw the most recent national tour.
The Color Purple is a powerful, affecting story, no matter which medium you encounter it. Do yourself a favor and give either of the cast recordings a listen, then make sure you see it if it comes to a theater near you. Until next week, go see a show!

Brief Review: The Color Purple (1985)
Rated the film 4.5 stars out of 5. Incredible acting by the cast, astonishing cinematography by Allen Daviau, and a marvelous period-specific score by Quincy Jones, this is one of the best films of 1985, yet holds the curious distinction of being one of two films (along with 1977′s The Turning Point) to earn 11 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture), yet win zero Academy Awards. Granted, five of those nominations ended up losing to the powerhouse that was Out of Africa, yet the crew of The Color Purple could easily have won any of them as well as many of the rest they attained. Whoopi Goldberg’s debut film performance is magnificent and worthy of her nomination, showing powerfully stoic shyness as louder characters emote around her. Some of these are Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery in strong supporting roles, also deserving nominations, while Danny Glover, Adolph Caesar, and Willard E. Pugh take on the major male roles that notably display inferiority to the courageous feminine roles. Director Steven Spielberg successfully combines all the production values to create an impeccable whole, the Oscar-nominated art direction, costume design, music, original songs, and makeup all enhancing the period piece, yet Daviau’s camerawork hits another level, using natural light, shadows, and layered shots of various depth that somehow did not win an Oscar (though David Watkin’s Out of Africa is an equally strong competitor). The last remaining Oscar nomination of Best Adapted Screenplay by Menno Meyjes is also praiseworthy, emotionally-charged twists in the plot giving the film greater depth and social progression that still pushes boundaries today. Overall, this is not only one of the best films of that year, but also one of Spielberg’s best films, rightfully earning a spot on the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list as well as the AFI’s 100 Cheers list, the inspiring story fueled by powerful portrayals and the amazing production values that strengthen them further. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088939/
