hello, all. I present to you a long list of why Winn Schott is Autistic as Hell:
• academically gifted
• stims- hand flappies, plays with his shirt, fidget spinner, lots of trinkets to play with, fidgets a lot, scratching/rubbing the back of his neck, playing with his tie, etc

We're All In This Together-Chapter 7
Fandom: Supergirl, Batman, Superman, The Flash
Characters: Kara Danvers, Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Barry Allen, Barbara Gordon, Leonard Snart, Mxyzptlk, John Stewart, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Damian Wayne, Cassandra Cain, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Cat Grant, Oliver Queen, Felicity Smoak, Winn Schott, Caitlyn Snow, Jonathan Samuel Kent, Nora Allen, Alura Danvers (OC), Alex Danvers, Martha Kent, Jonathan Kent, Eliza Danvers, J'onn J'onzz
Summary: Kara, Clark, and Barry are taken off guard by a request by the imp Mxyzptlk: watch over and protect the children of their alternate selves from a different Earth. Will our heroes rise to the occasion?
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6
Kara and Barry smiled as they watched the kids sleep. Kara stretched, looked down, and chuckled as she stared at her watch.
Barry raised an eyebrow and asked, “What’s so funny?”
Kara smiled and said, “We have been standing here staring at them for 30 minutes now.”
Barry smiled and said, “But they are so adorable.”
Kara chuckled and said, “I know, but we should probably be a little more productive. I know I am officially on leave, but I did have three articles I was in the middle of working on…”
Barry sighed and said, “I know what you mean. I had several cases I was working on. Normally, you have to offload your cases before going on leave. Not sure if Mxy in all of his planning arranged all of that.”
Kara shrugged and said, “He seemed pretty thorough…”
Barry rubbed the back of his neck and said, “I will probably run to Central City just to make sure. By the time I find out, I’ll swing by S.T.A.R. Labs to talk to Caitlyn, Felicity, and Oliver.”
Kara raised an eyebrow and asked, “Wouldn’t Felicity and Oliver be in Star City?”
Barry nodded and said, “Normally, but S.T.A.R. Labs is hosting an energy-saving conference with Caitlyn and Felicity being some of the main panelists. Oliver is hosting the entire thing.”
Kara winced and said, “Crap, I forgot with everything going on that I was supposed to be covering that event with Jimmy and Winn today for Catco. I need to check to see if they got someone to replace me for that or not.”
Barry asked, ”Did you want to meet at S.T.A.R. Labs while they are setting up for the event? I would imagine Clark would be back before then.”
Kara nodded and said, “Sure.”
Barry smiled and said, “Okay. Well, I am headed out. I will see you shortly.”
And with that, Barry zoomed off as a red blur.
Kara chuckled while shaking her head. She turned to head to the kitchen to grab her laptop when she heard her phone ring. She quickly zoomed to her room to grab her phone.
“Hello?”
“Ah, Kierra. So your phone is working.”
Kara stuttered, “Ms. Grant…”
“You seem surprised to hear from me,” mused Ms. Grant.
Kara chuckled nervously and said, “I just didn’t know that you got up this early.”
Ms. Grant sighed and said, “I decided on a quick vacation to Paris yesterday. I am several hours ahead of you right now.”
“Oh….”
Ms. Grant cleared her throat and said, “That is beside the point. I must say, Kierra. I know that we don’t communicate all the time, but as your mentor, I thought you would have the decency to let me know of important life changes.”
Kara stared at the phone shocked. She knew that Ms. Grant would have received the email from HR about her leave. However, Ms. Grant usually had her assistant field through those emails and dealt with it unless it was something that needed her direct approval. Kara had started to shift slightly back and forth.
Ms. Grant scoffed and said, “I get that you wouldn’t have been able to tell me in person, but I at least expected a phone call, not a random email from HR saying you have three months of parental leave.”
Kara winced and said, “Ms. Grant, I didn’t mean any slight about not letting you know about the adoption. When, my friend, cousin, and I went into this, we didn’t know that it would be this quick of a process.”
“Adoption agencies usually give you some type of guideline of when you get the child.”
Kara stuttered and said, “We didn’t go through the adoption agency though. We had to do the reclaim process with LexCorp…”
The line was silent for a moment before Ms. Grant said softly, “Oh…I didn’t realize…” Ms. Grant was silent for a moment and asked gently, “Are you okay Kara?”
Kara looked down at her phone in surprise. She had seen multiple sides of Ms. Grant’s personality ranging from anger to indignation, but this gentler side she was displaying was a new one.
Kara said warily, “Yes, I'm fine. Why?”
Ms. Grant was silent momentarily before saying, “What Lex did to you and the others….that is such a violation. I am surprised honestly that Lex didn’t get a harsher sentence for what he has done…”
Kara gave a soft smile and said, “Oh, I agree with you. However, I choose to look at the positive which is that my friend, cousin, and I have three little ones to fawn over.”
Ms. Grant gave a slight chuckle.
Kara frowned and asked, “What’s so funny?”
Ms. Grant sighed and said, “You are the only person I know who takes such a bleak situation that Lex caused, and puts a positive spin on it. I heard that LexCorp hadn’t been notifying the biological parents when they would give their child to them so some of the parents were not prepared for the kid’s arrival. I hope that you had a more positive experience than that.”
Kara chuckled nervously and said, “Nope, we just had an hour warning before the kids arrived.”
Ms. Grant scoffed and said, “The nerve of those Neanderthals.” Ms. Grant sighed and said, “That probably explains why HR put on rush on the leave of absence request for you. Normally, it would have taken a couple of weeks for approval, but we have been making exceptions with this whole LexCorp thing.” Ms. Grant paused for a moment and said, “If you need help with making living accommodations or kids supplies….”
Kara smiled and said, “Fortunately, we had enough space for the kids and enough supplies for them.”
Ms. Grant breathed a sigh of relief and said, “That’s good to hear. It is not only good to have supplies, but also to have a good support system. You know the saying that it takes a tribe to raise a child.”
Kara chuckled and said, “Actually, we are gathering our tribe as we speak. We just got the kids today, but we are throwing a party this Saturday to introduce them to family and friends. I would love it if you could come.”
Ms. Grant sighed and said, “I unfortunately won’t be able to attend. I promised Carter we would stay in Paris until Sunday, but….” Ms. Grant was silent for a moment before she asked, “How old are the kids?”
“The three kids are six years old.”
“That is perfect! They are the same age as Carter! We should do a playdate.”
Kara smiled and said, “I would like that.”
“How would next Monday at around noon sound?”
Kara was surprised. She didn’t think that Ms. Grant would take her up on that so quickly.
“Sure. Monday at noon would be awesome.”
“Wonderful. I will text you my address and Kara….”
“Yes…” said Kara hesitantly.
Ms. Grant said warmly, “Welcome to motherhood.”

Winn Schott - He Protects the Stars Masterpost, [P1 S2 E1-11]
Being a ramble of thoughts concerning one Winn Schott Jr., the tech genius and undervalued hero, with much appreciation for his character and reminders of how much they all need him.
Missed Season one? See S1 episodes 1-10 and episodes 11-20.
Without further ado, episodes are under the cut.
2x01, The Adventures of Supergirl
A decent Winnisode by all accounts
It was pointed out to me that Winn is always the one to pass Kara her drink when they’re out in a group. #idon’trecallmyhashtags. #supportive friend #priorities whatever
Winn chiming in on the “to family” toast, because this is his family. #space fam
Friendly reminder that Winn learned Kryptonian because he “got bored.” and that Alex requested his help at the DEO. #genius
“Find out something that my team of highly trained alien experts can’t.” “Challenge accepted.” AND HE DID. #genius
Aside: he promises to figure this out. To Kara. Because she is important to him.
Fanboying over Superman. I don’t have anything intelligent to add over this. Just watch the smol son freak out, it’s beautiful. #protect him
Winn handy translator helped him read the alien pod’s computer and discover the craft’s trajectory, giving them important info on their guest.
“You look Fantastic.”
Is the one who pays attention enough to find out where the explosion originated, that it was directly under a seat, and to realize that seat had significance: it belonged to Lena. This allows Kara and Clark to rush to Lena’s aid, who they thought was a suspect, not a victim, and they arrive just in time to save her life, and thereby contact the villain and find out his plans and save other lives. #hero
the murdery drone reminding him of his dad’s work. Look at our boy casually tossing around what was held as his deepest, darkest secret; making sure his friends don’t see him any differently now that they know. He’s come a long way.
-and immediate concern for Kara. Always. #supportive friend #priorities “always” should become another hashtag here.
Kara immediately asks specifically for Winn’s aid the minute they’re in trouble. And he delivers. #always
One minute Alex asks J’onn to let Winn help on a tiny bit of decoding, and suddenly Winn is in the thick of things, like he saw stuff going down and just grabbed a computer. #hero
Already making Space Dad smile by his antics. Space Dad needs this tbh.
Welcome to the DEO, Winn. You deserve this.
2x02, The Last Children of Mars
Open with sass: “Grumpy”
Quoting Yoda, the second Star Wars reference in as many episodes. Also, aside, it is obvious that Star Wars is Winn’s favorite fandom, it has the most nods and references from our boy of any he mentions. #nerd
“Hey, new kid, go get the alien tech from storage. Ya know, the stuff that almost made everything really bad for us last time. And see if you can improve upon it.” Winn isn’t there more than a day and J’onn already relies on him an incredible amount. Might be a test, might just be resourceful with his assets.
Entrusted with making Superman (and Kara) a specialized suit.
Our favorite non-super hero is loving this DEO tech, locating the Prometheum in seconds.
Those suits aren’t ready because the former IT guy is obviously preoccupied doing... everything else tech wise at the DEO. #give him a break
Winn and science and his big sis, Alex. #nerds #brotp
“Think with less stabbing.” Good advice.
Here’s a bit of backstory: Winn grew up in foster care after his dad was jailed and his mother took off. And they are not happy memories, probably especially because he’s the child of a crazy murderer. But what he’s taken away from that is beautiful. Family is about showing up. Probably this is why he always shows up for his friends, his family. He understands the importance of that.
CANNOT TELL A LIE TO SAVE HIS LIFE
Does anyone else require much, much more of Winn being a nerd with Clark? Give the boy some quality friendship time please.
Also: the slightly ironic swell of the soundtrack as the camera pans around Winn to reveal his emotional expression. It’s earned though: Winn is a hero.
“Thank you, Winn.” Clark is one of a small handful of people on a small handful of occasions to show appreciation for Winn or his efforts. Even though the quickly assembled armor was not ready to withstand the attack, it was helpful, and Clark appreciates it here. Bless.
He’s happy to see Space Dad and Clark finally getting along, and sad to see Superman leave. Also, that hug. Winn is very much a hugging person, and it’s a great bit.
“Next time.” Let there be a next time, yes? Yes.
2x03, Welcome to Earth
Look at that flame-retardant cape helping Kara save the president's life tracking Mon-el.
Just kind of, left on his own while everyone else squees over the president?? Winn honey, I know that in the past episode and a half you have become the single person who gets asked to do everything at the DEO but take a break for a minute
Finds Mon-el. Bravo.
Look at the other, older, more experienced DEO agents behind him, literally just staring in awe and confusion as he works. #genius
Somehow not only finds the signal Mon-el sends, but also tracks down its origin to a dead planet whose existence and name hardly anyone even knows about.
I feel the need to point out here, with Kara's reference to a Kryptonian slur for the Daxamites and her farewell to Clark in the previous episode, that Winn's ignorance of their meaning does not mean he doesn't actually know Kryptonian. Languages are hard and complex things, and Winn probably learned everything he knows from texts, not from oral teaching. A deeply personal phrase like the one Kara uses for Clark, which they say has no easy English translation, and a random curse, are not likely to have been in his vocabulary - but for what it's worth, they are now.
Pretty low on the Winncontent otherwise.
2x04, Survivors
Disappointed Earth doesn't have dragon soccer. Me too, Winn. Me too.
"awesome" and "amazing" are Winn's favorite terms, in case no one has noticed. #give the guy a thesaurus
Hold the phone. Casual mention of "shall I get a strike team to gear up?" after he identifies and locates an alien assailant??? The man has been at the DEO for what, a few days, maybe a week? And he has the authority to call up a strike team for Alex?? I'm not complaining, but, just how tight a ship is J’onn running here?
Just assumes Mon-el is going to use his newfound power for good, to be a hero, because whether it's with his friends, or even with his dad, or with Siobhan, Winn has a steady history of looking for the best in people.
I've been asked to point out the times Winn gets manipulated into things, and here's a good one: Mon-el promising Winn he can make his supersuit and name him, if he'll just let Mon-el do what he wants. Should Winn have listened? No. But he, too, has been cooped up at the DEO for a fair bit and temptation is too strong here. Thanks, Mon-el, for setting up how this relationship is going to work.
Drunk Winn. Oh dear.
Again, Winn cannot keep secrets or tell lies. He's hopeless.
This whole follow-up scene at the DEO is golden. All of it. I love him.
Winn traced J’onn’s phone. No big deal for him, but he did that.
To be fair, Mon-el at least puts in a good word for Winn, admitting he baited him into the whole thing.
Winn and Alex being concerned for Space Dad is an ongoing trope. I love Space Dad and his kids. #space fam
2x05, Crossfire **Winnisode**
Winnisode is how I’m officially labeling episodes with a fair amount of Winn
"Any of these [guns] look familiar?" is in the weary tones of someone who has asked this question multiple times in the past hour.
Displaying, again, concern over what could have happened to Kara in this most recent fight. #always
"I was into Kara." An important line. I don't think this is completely honest, but he's also not good at lying so who knows. In any case, his friendship with Kara is still important to him, and that's good.
Winn never should have let Mon-el watch television.
Playing with a toy gun, are we? After the incident at the toy convention and everything else?? Hmmm. I choose to read this as our irrepressible hero bouncing back, and maybe intentionally moving past fears, maybe because he thinks being an agent in the field would be cool.
Repeatedly going over the Cadmus broadcast, looking for clues. Detail-oriented.
Another instance of Winn being manipulated? Here we go. James here, showing up to "check in" on his friend, when instead all he wants is to trick Winn into giving him info so he can go be a haphazard vigilante. The second he has what he needs, not two minutes into their conversation, he just leaves. He wasn't there to see Winn at all.
This entire scene where Winn confronts James is golden. James is completely valid wanting to do important and worthy things and feeling out of place, but Winn is making total sense. James will get himself killed on this. He isn't a superpowered human, he isn't bulletproof. Winn obviously already worries about his other best friend getting herself hurt, now he's trying to protect his second friend.
“To fight with knowledge - there is no shame in that.” #hero
"Or you can end up just like him" is harsh. However, coming from the guy who is terrified that his own interests and skills will make him turn out like his father? He's not wrong.
Winn trying to remind James that you don't have to don a suit and punch people to be a hero.
Helping Kara implement her plan. Complete dork bumping into Lena. And still trying to protect James, whose actions in this scene, do not help btw. #supportive friend
Saving the day with his new Science Friend, Lena. #more of this please
"We stopped it!" #hero #sunshine child
1) acknowledging James' side of things, and 2) "I would feel kinda bad if you went and got yourself killed and I could have helped you, blablabla." You watch this scene and tell me which one is the more relevant reason for his decision. “Do not run into the line of fire until [the suit] is ready.” Winn will always want to be there to protect the people he cares about when he knows he can help them.
Also just a little bit excited to be a hero, who can blame him.
2x06, Changing **Winnisode**
(not as much screentime, but some solid moments)
Calling the agents to arms (is that also his job on top of everything else? what exactly is in his job description anyway??)
Distracted by Drunk Kara, a new thing. And you can't convince me of "was" into Kara when here he immediately deflates into saltiness about Mon-el partying with Kara.
Alex and J'onn just... leaving Kara for a bemused Winn to take care of lol.
Winn analyzed the laptops. All of them. Literally what are the other agents doing when they are at work?
Identifies and names the alien parasite. #genius #nerd
Another manipulative scene with James, and I was so angry with James here: He has absolutely zero right to demand things of Winn. They're both upset, worried about Kara, but that doesn't make his angry demands warranted. And he realizes he's gone too far, but it's too late. I think they both very much needed this conversation. But Winn is not yours to use, James, and he's doing this completely for you, so back off sir.
Aside: I will never not have feels over the way Winn immediately checks himself when he gets angry here. He confessed to Kara that whenever he gets angry, he wonders if he'll snap and do something terrible. So he doesn't let himself get angry. #protect him
"I'm better at this kind of stuff than anyone you will ever meet." It's nice to see Winn not selling himself short. Is it a little grandiose of a claim? I dunno, so far, he hasn't been wrong.
"Your IT Prophet has a lead." oh Winn. XD
Left to look after the two people who have come to be his family.
While I wish Winn had found a way to convince James not to do this, I appreciate the solemnity he handles the moment with. Yes, James, you need to be sure.
Friendly reminder Winn makes all of Guardian's arsenal. That bomb that just saved Mon-el? His. That shield? This boy is good.
Excited to see Kara. Sorry James, your Man in the Van will #always have a favorite super.
Designed James’ suit so that Kara specifically couldn't discover that it's James.
Feels wrong keeping the secret from Kara. Yes, good.
He hoped that James would take a shot at the hero thing and realize his mistake and be done. But that's not the case, so he'll continue to support James and enjoy being a hero along the way. #supportive friend
2x07, The Darkest Place **Winnisode**
Honestly, S2 holds a promising amount of content for Agent Schott, or at least it does when you know you might get scraps.
Winn Is Not Subtle.
“Three versus one.” Try three versus two, James. Don’t forget about your partner. Partner, not sidekick.
"in every situation Guardian seems to be one step ahead" that is one hecking good "sidekick" Alex
Nice grappling device, Winn *cough* I mean, Guardian.
#highpitched panic
Terrified of going to jail? Gee, I wonder how much thought he's put into that scenario...
Fantasy football: something James is into and invited Winn to get into as well, but not really Winn's thing - something he would do for an excuse to hang out with his friend? Yes.
Alex. Those eyes. He doesn't stand a chance.
That jump.
Offended by her slap. Such a little brother to Alex's big sister. #brotp
Too worried about the James/Guardian situation to be worried for Kara for once, having no idea she could be in danger. He does know she can take care of himself, honestly he probably shouldn't worry as much as he does, but this time it would still be warranted.
“Genius takes time.”
Winn figuring out things no one stopped to think on: noticing the one guy the vigilante let get away and wondering if there was significance to it, following through, making connections, digging up exactly who they need to look into. Call yourself genius anytime, sir, because at least it's not an empty boast.
James trusting Winn's direction when they're in the field. He needs Winn like the rest of them do. Can you imagine Guardian without his man in the van watching his back? (Spoiler, when Winn gets distracted, James ends up with a bullet graze.)
A little offended on Kara's behalf with the whole "hitched" conversation with Mon-el, but mostly amused
Kid in a candy store when his bff uses her powers.
2x08, Medusa
"Casually drop" the revelation about Guardian. Winn, dear, you can't casually drop anything.
"Eliiiiiiza's glazed carroooooots??!"
Okay, but petition Winn gets like... one, just one happy normal safe Thanksgiving someday?
Shoves James forward to make his confession. Pulls him back down when the timing is obviously not right.
Mon-el gives his speech, very similar to the one Winn tried to give last year, and Winn just...sort of freezes... and then just downs his wine. Poor dude.
"One slightly less intense than last year's Thanksgiving." SEE WHAT I MEAN Warring families are definitely worse than ripping holes in space, I agree.
Listen to Kara or do the smart thing? Or try your best to do both?
-Not Winn related, but I just have to point out in the Monopoly scene you can see one of the crew got careless with those glass doors and you can see their feet as Kara goes in to help Mon-el.
Watch Winn's face when Cadmus declares "every alien will die." You can tell his heart just dropped. His bff? The boss who will also become probably his healthiest relationship? Hundreds of innocents? He can't take it.
Calls the strike team anyway, because he would rather take action (and listen to Kara) than err on inaction.
At the end, he was totally going in for a hug there with Space Dad. Just saying. #space fam
Lastly. We were so close, sooooooo close to a Winn and Cisco meet. *sigh*
2x09, Supergirl Lives
I have a love/hate relationship with this episode, but Winn is amazing.
Quick thinking Winn, clothes-lining the baddie with the van door. Bravo. #hero
I can’t watch this scene. 10/10 cannot handle.
THE NEXT PERSON TO POINT A GUN AT THE PRECIOUS SUNSHINE CHILD-
“Winn, you okay?” No James. He isn’t. But thanks because this may be the last time anyone asks.
James had free time so he went home and wrote a fluff opinion piece on himself?? While his best buddy is in need of medical care and a friend. *sigh*
Can we talk about how Winn, regardless of keeping Guardian a secret, chooses to try and cover up his injury rather than seeking sympathy with his “mugging” story? #too pure #a good #protect him
“The future is very bright.”
.2 seconds of concern for Winn being the victim of an armed mugging is over, now we switch to finding out why Alex looks so dang chipper.
I’m sorry James. Not everyone gets a gun pulled on them. That doesn’t happen to normal people. Give Winn a break.
James may truly want to help, but somebody please give him some pointers: Good things to do for your friend: give them a break to recover from a trauma, go visit them for the express purpose of seeing them and being there for them, listen to what they have to say. Winn is always the #supportive friend, but he could definitely use one of those himself.
“It’s Stargate!” #nerd
WINN DESIGNED KARA’S SUIT WITH POCKETS AT THE SHOULDERS AND CAPE. #HERO #GENIUS
Tracing the portal trip to its base planet. #genius
Tooooootally a Captain America shirt right there. #nerd
I could talk about this scene for days but just kudos to Jeremy for brilliantly portraying a panic attack with all of Winn’s little mannerisms here: flight instinct, pushing his sleeves up, trying to breathe normally, stammering, all of it. Bravo.
“Kara needs you. I need you.” #hero
Alex is just amazing in this scene.
Winn + Space = the only OTP
Please tell me whose bright idea it was to leave an untrained agent by himself on a dangerous alien planet with no means of protection other than a bulletproof vest and what appears to be a completely empty weapon holster. ???? #protect him
You are not the red shirt.
“You brought WINN to space?” I hear you, Kara.
Winn taking on a murderous alien with only his wits and a space rock is amazing. #hero
LOOK AT THIS BRAVE CLEVER HERO. Yeah, you had better be watching Kara, look what your friend can do.
“Start the car!” is like my second favorite Mon-el line of all time, just have to put that out there.
Sometimes, being a genius means aggressively hitting alien technology until it does the thing. #genius #sorta #desperate times
Did anyone else notice that Kara pushed Winn safely through the portal and then suddenly he’s still with them at the end? Terrible continuity, but I’m just going to choose to believe that the little space nerd didn’t want to leave it forever quick so quickly.
#no hugs for Winn. :(
Look at him. He is over the moon. Well. Close. ;)
When did he get the space rocks? Collecting samples while fixing the portal? Or from shaking out his vest and shoes and finding space dust there?
WIINN. SCHOTT. PROTECTS. THE. STARS. #hero
2x10, We Could Be Heroes
Winn. Is. Tired.
It’s a tossup whether the fact that James is injured or the fact that Winn’s suit failed is the reasoning for him wanting to tell Kara immediately.
“This is officially the first time I have ever asked you for anything.” ..... He has a point. And all he wants is to tell the truth.
“Maybe she’ll turn all the girlfriends evil again, I don’t know!” Winn Schott is the saltiest, most extra cinnamon roll in the world.
Cries out in anguish when Kara breaks a computer. XD #nerd
Pretty sure if Kara had maybe had a heart to heart with her best friend, it probably would have kept him from going behind their backs to help Guardian again. He wants to prove a point, and prove his worth.
Jack-of-all-trades #8?: Man in the Van. He has too many trades. I’ve lost count.
“Short answer: science,” is the best techno-babble replacement line.
Stuff goes wrong. Calls Kara. Winn isn’t an idiot.
Space Dad lecturing Winn and Winn thinks he’s this close to being dead. XD Bonus of Space Dad complimenting Winn and James and acknowledging their work. Kara, take notes.
When Kara lectures them, James leaves. But Winn waits. He waits to see if Kara has anything else she wants to say. And he looks so disappointed as he walks away. :( #always?
2x11, The Martian Chronicles **Winnisode**
not the most development, but some thrilling heroics
“Didn’t know I’d be seeing you tonight.” “Why wouldn’t you be?” Kara, some people do actually have work schedules that they try to stick to in order to keep their jobs, and most humans actually benefit from them.
That sad smile of his when she says “you could have been killed” It’s the thing he worries about with her. He knows, Kara.
“Have you ever thought that maybe I have a calling too?” This is one of only a handful of times Winn directly stands up for himself, and I want to stand up and applaud.
Gameplanning with Vasquez. YES. Also, good to see at least one of the other DEO agents actually being allowed to do noticeable work.
Confusion and horror in reaction to seeing the White Martian double. #protect him
They just.....wreck all the computers. Winn is really going to have a lot of work.
Spoilers: Everything from this point is not Winn, but the Martian. But that Martian has access to Winn’s memories, including learned abilities and general knowledge, and uses that to his advantage. Also, little note: Winn was probably physically the easiest target in the room. He’s not tactically trained. Maybe that’s why the White Martian took him out, because it needed a hiding place and Winn was a safe bet. On the other hand, the other one also took Alex, so. It may have been more than luck that led the Martians to selecting Winn, the genius whose mind and access they could use to implement their plan.
“Teakwood and tobacco.” I need the story behind this. Current headcanon is that this smell is associate with a foster home.
Martian!Winn noticeably nervous about J’onn’s mind scan.
Covering his initial offense at M’gann’s insult by turning it into a very Winn-like quip.
There is thinly veiled contempt in Martian!Winn’s glance at J’onn. Nice acting, nice directing there.
#whatEvenIsThatHandThingy ???
#ScaryWinn
I...I really hope Jeremy enjoyed this as much as it looks like he did.
Winn has access to the whole system. That’s great. Uuuuuntil an evil alien gets to the reactor.
“We need the real Winn to unlock it.” I love that Alex doesn’t even question if anyone else can beat Martian!Winn’s encryption. However, I’m not sure if this is the real Alex here or not...
Also, seriously Kara, why has it taken you this long to show concern for your friend?
non-Winn-related commentary: #this is not the time for a meaningful chat. #you are going to get blown up.
WINN. UNCONSCIOUS. TIED UP ON THE CEILING. how dare. #protect him
“Whhyyyyy??!” is me when my alarm clock goes off. Probably Winn too.
“OOooHhHh wegottagetouttahere” XD XD
....Recovers faster than Alex. Maybe because he’s already ‘been there done that’ with someone being in his brain?
“About four minutes?” Love him.
Psyching himself up, assuring he can do it, right before seeing the battle going on around the reactor.
Warns J’onn about Armek. #hero #space fam
Space Dad’s priorities: protect the children, stop the bomb. #space fam
Has the courage to move through the fight to the core. He has his fear well in control here, just getting to work. #hero
“Whoever encoded this was a genius.” You. You sir. You are the #genius.
“This did not used to happen at CatCo.” Sweetheart. It wasn’t a lot better.
“Close? We had like twelve seconds to spare!”
“Can’t believe it’s still nighttime.” It’s ok, no one knows how time passes in this town buddy.
Put it on record: Kara just showed appreciation for Winn doing his job and saving the day. He couldn’t have done it alone, but no one else could have done it without him. #always #hero
“Unless you object.” He’s giving her a chance to make amends and she takes it, not giving him any reason not to go with Guardian. #supportive friend. “Be Safe.” She also shows care for him, which has become rare.
#Always.
Alrighty, that’s it for this post! I’ll add the rest of the episodes to a second part, which I shall link from here as soon as it’s posted. :D Hope you enjoyed. Winn Schott deserves the world.

Looking Super
Winn Schott meets Cisco Ramon in high school, not too long after Winn's dad goes off the deep end, declares himself a supervillain, and is promptly sent to Arkham - National City Branch - by Superman. This is well before Superman moves to Metropolis, which in turn happens shortly before Supergirl takes over protecting National City.
But, anyway, Cisco and Winn meet. Cisco's the only kid in school who doesn't treat Winn awfully about his father, doesn't act like he thinks Winn is a bad day away from turning into a killer just like his father.
It's post Columbine so the things people say and assume about Winn are... but Cisco never once says those things. Not once.
So Winn maybe develops a crush on Cisco based on being treated with respect alone. Not that he'd say anything, but Winn's utterly enamored by Cisco and is his biggest cheerleader when Cisco decides to start growing out his hair despite his parents arguing against it.
They have a number of classes together that year, but their last class of the day is Home Ec. Winn is nervous about it because he used to do these kinds of projects with his dad. He already knows a lot about cooking and baking and sewing because those were skills his dad told him were important to have. Before he snapped, Winn Sr. was a good dad and Winn hasn't seen that man since he was fired and descended into this pit of toxic masculinity that ended with blowing up his former employers with toys turned to bombs. So Winn signed up for the class in a fit of nostalgia, wanting to remind himself that his father wasn't always a bad person.
Except his first day of school arrived, Winn spent the whole day getting vitriol spat at him by a lot of people - including teachers - and his only bright spot of the day was this nice guy who made sure to sit next to him in every shared class they had and who made Winn feel like maybe he wasn't really a freak no matter what other people said. But he's approaching the Home Ec classroom alone, thinking about his dad, and wondering if he made a mistake. Except... there's Cisco again. And Cisco perks up, beaming widely at Winn as he walks in, waving for Winn to come sit beside him. And... that's basically where things start.
It turns out they both really enjoy sewing, taking the time to meet up after school to do increasingly complicated projects. For Halloween they design and make super hero costumes for themselves and their small group of friends - Caitlin Snow, Kara Danvers, and Ronnie Raymond - and Cisco tells Winn that he's 'looking super' when he tries on his own costume for the first time.
Winn's pretty sure Kara - who accidentally came out to them as a Kryptonian at homecoming - can spot the heat radiating off his blush before she even comes in through the door to join them for pre-trick or treating costume checks.
After high school, Winn and Cisco go into fashion and it's a cut throat world. They decide they're not cut out for competing on runways and retreat back to National City where they open a boutique of their own.
Cisco kisses Winn for the first time at their grand opening, doing what Winn's always been afraid to, and everything changes for them. In a good way.
The boutique is named 'Looking Super', of course, and they officially cater to clientele who wouldn't normally be able to afford designer clothes or items specifically tailored to flatter them. Unofficially, they become clothiers to the super heroes of a number of cities, starting with Kara when she decides to step up to become Supergirl. Then Ronnie and Caitlin when fate transforms them into Firestorm and Frost. Word spreads and they wind up designing costumes jam packed with safety features to the paranoid members of Team Arrow in Star City Washington and even as far away as the Flash in Central City. And if Dick Grayson is serious about his 'discowing' idea, then Bludhaven is about to become the next city to sport a super hero wearing a 'Looking Super' design.
And it's been a very, very long time since Winn was afraid of turning out like his dad. And a long time since Winn was afraid that still loving his dad - the person his dad used to be before everything went wrong - made him a bad person, too. Because Winn has been through hard times and come out the other side still himself. He has Cisco's love and his dear friends and the respect of so, so many super heroes.
All because of Winn's choice not to let his good memories turn sour... and because he accepted Cisco's friendship all those years ago.
Edit: Updated to say their shop is in National City and not Central City (I'm just so used to writing stuff set in Central City... whoops)

When Querl awakes, it’s almost easy to pretend he’s still at home.
He can let himself believe he’s still there, in the Legion headquarters, about to leave for the twenty-first century. He can believe that he will never truly leave, that he is only trapped in a time loop and each time he will always wake up here, still in danger, never too far from home.
The decor in his new room versus his previous one is different, of course. He knows that the DEO building will, at some point, require being rebuilt, and these are not literally the same walls as those in the Legion headquarters. The bed is not the same either, and neither are the shelves or drawers that have been placed here for his convenience. But they take similar shapes, and when he sees the collection of what he might refer to as “junk” that Ayla has given him over the years...
He wants to mistake everything for what he knows.
But he cannot, and no sooner does he remind himself of that and dress in the official DEO uniform that’s been laid out for him (Mon-El must have told someone his sizes, or perhaps Winn had guessed) that his door opens, and Alex arrives, waiting for him.
“Good morning, A-Ah, Director Danvers.” he says. From what he could figure out (and Kara, once she’d introduced him to ice cream, talking enthusiastically about it between promises of game nights and showings of Star Wars movies) her promotion happened around the same time his did (though he’s still not sure that it definitely applies to his situation) and he suspects they’re both getting used to it.
“Morning, Brainy.” she answers. “Did you...”
She gestures to the bed, and he realizes she might not be sure that he sleeps at all. He and Mon-El and Imra slept in the Legion ship while they stayed here, and nobody needed to show them to a guest room or checked on them.
(Specifically, nobody checked on him for weeks, as he first isolated himself to, as Winn instructed, “learn his history”, and then went on patrol with Imra. But he wasn’t holding it against any of them, especially not now, even though nobody checked on him last night either)
“Sleep well? I suppose.” he tells her, leaving out that he slept in his desk chair instead of the bed, and that’s enough, as she gestures for him to follow her out the door.
“Good. Because we’ve got a long day ahead of us- I guess that’s kind of always, but... it’s both of our first days too. So that’s different.”
“I can adjust.” he reassures her.
“So can I.” she says. “But first... I don’t suppose you still have paperwork that you fill out, in the thirty-first century?”
He must look as though he doesn’t understand what she’s saying, or have remained silent for longer than she anticipated, because she follows it up with “Forgive me. I don’t even know if you have paper.”
“I am aware of what paper is, Director Danvers. We do have some of it stored in our archives.”
Including Winn’s original design, he thinks. But he doesn’t want to further remind her of the friend she just lost, so he keeps that to himself.
“Good, because we need to work on it together.” she says.
Querl wants to question her- does she not believe he can do so himself, answering the questions prompted to him with the correct information?
But a review of DEO files past, on another thought track, reminds him that J’onn was removed from the DEO once his true identity as a Martian was discovered.
And, it stood to reason... he had two things to hide.
“Yes.” he agrees. “I suppose I need a... a secret identity?”
Alex smiles back at him, as she pauses in front of the door to her new office, which still has Hank Henshaw’s name on it- although underneath, someone’s also added J’onn J’onzz.
“Something like that.” she says. “Let’s build your cover story.”
~
It comes together.
And accordingly, they are able to piece together an explanation as to why Querl is only now on the grid, so to speak, why he was brought in to replace Agent Schott. It’s not as easy, he imagines, as J’onn taking over Hank’s life- there is nobody for Querl to impersonate, no human he can pretend to be to make his life easier.
But he does lie- albeit to protect himself, just as Kara does, but lie nonetheless, and list his species as human, his homeworld as Earth.
(The latter of which, from his point of view, is true.)
Once he does, though, Alex nods in understanding, and they fill out the rest of the paperwork- as close to honestly as possible.
(“You’re older than me.” Alex says at one point when he writes down his birthday, converting the calendar he knows to that of Earth, staring at him. “And I thought Winn was the only one.”
“Is this a bad thing?”
She shakes her head, and they keep going.)
~
“Just take these up to Pam in HR- she’s got a name tag, she’s easy to find. She’ll get everything processed for you.” Alex says once they’re done- after Querl has made standard identifications for himself, cards that prove he exists, and belongs to this planet, to this century, at least for now.
“Affirmative.” He says.
Querl turns to leave, but he catches sight of Alex holding up a hand to halt him, and he turns back around.
“What is it?”
“Welcome to the DEO, Agent Dox.” She says- and when she pauses, he recognizes that she’s speaking to him now as a friend, rather than as a boss, or a team leader. “We’re happy to have you.”
“And I am glad to be here.”
To be safe, especially. Even if “safe” is a relative term, in this city when fighting the antagonists that Supergirl does, and for a member of my family.
“Thank you. I will not let you down.”
“That’s what I was counting on.”

Earth 74 legends
Headcannon thing thanks
(Here we go!)
1. Bruce Wayne has been raised to be a protector of Gotham. Thomas and Martha Wayne are philanthropists and vigilantes, but Bruce doesn’t want to live in the large shadow they cast. He heads out to Nickle City to make a name for himself either as his own man or own vigilante, only to be encountered with an insane offer on a rooftop four months later.
2. Lily Stein is a survivor, not that she asked to be. The explosion at Star Labs was supposed to have killed her, but her mother died making sure the experimental alien technology bonded to her body to keep her alive. Half woman and half machine, Lily is at loss for the next step until someone gives her the chance to be more than a shadow of who she used to be.
3. Brought up by an abusive father, Winn Schott fell into a life of crime at an early age. He hardened his heart to the world and focused on whatever job he found or picked up. On the night of the explosion at Star Labs, Winn was there, and instead of picking pockets in the aftermath, he pitched in to help those around him. When he discovered he could control the weather in later months, things changed. Winn still stole from museums, but used his powers to protect those who needed it. Maybe that was why he was asked to save the world.
4. Kendra Saunders feels like she has reached a dead end. Once upon a time, she was planning to run away from her family with the love of her life, ready to leave the mob life in the past. Then her fiancé was murdered by her father and her love twisted into something else. She thought it would be sated by taking out the ones responsible for Ray’s death. After watching the life fade from her father’s eyes, Kendra felt emptier than ever. On the run from the police and a half a dozen bounty hunters, a man offers her a chance to find a new drive in life.
5. Gary Green is a liar and a coward. It took him too long to realize the monster his father was, and how the Time Counsel stood by and let it happen. After his father’s last battle in conquering the world, Gary steals a timeship and sets out with a mission- stop his father and the Time Masters from destroying the world. In order to do that, he’ll need a little help.

A collection of missing scenes and episode tags starring our favorite Protector of the Stars.
Chapter One: 2x09, Supergirl Lives. After returning from Maaldoria, Alex checks on Winn.
Chapter Two: 2x14, Homecoming. There was only one way Winn could have gotten those bruises on his throat, and knowing who had inflicted them was killing Alex.
Chapter Three: 3x05, Damage. James forgot that Winn had a hand in modifying Lex's device during the Daxamite invasion.
Chapter Four: 3x07, Wake Up. Winn takes M’yrnn to sample some of National City’s best food.
Chapter Five: 3x11, Fort Rozz. Brainy realizes that he might have underestimated the intellect of the DEO analysts.
Chapter Six: 3x15, In Search Of Lost Time. They find Winn at a bar, trying to drink away the memory of sticking a gun in Demos' chest and tightening his finger on the trigger.
Chapter Seven: 3x16, Of Two Minds. Winn doesn't bounce back from being infected by Pestilence quite as quickly as the episode made us believe.
Chapter Eight: 3x23, Battles Won and Lost. Winn and Mary’s relationship is rocky at best, but he still wants to talk to her before he leaves for the future.
--------------------------------------------
And that’s it! Winn has a much needed conversation with his mom for a final bit of closure before heading off to join the Legion. Fair warning, it’s a bit sappier than the rest of the chapters, but it felt appropriate given the rest of his farewell.
Brainy’s bugged jar of future dirt will reappear, and Winn and Brainy get another goodbye, complete with a substantially less awkward hug.
Thanks for all your prompts and support for my first foray into the Supergirl fandom! And shoutout to@you-cant-just-import-answer, just in general, but specifically, for reading this for me at an ungodly hour last night (this morning) so I could post it first thing.

Anything For You
Summary: As Winn’s childhood friend and longtime crush, he finds that he would do anything for Ivae. No matter the danger.
Part: 1/2
Pairing: Winn Schott x Ivae Summers (OC)
Warnings: angsty
Word count: 1,959
A/N: Hello! This will be two parts but I'm thinking part two will be fluffy as hell with only a pinch of angst. Enjoy!
~
“Ivae?!” Winn was frantic as he ran through the warehouse, scanning aisle after aisle for any sign of his friend. Toys were littered along the shelves and floor. His nerves were spiking alongside his adrenaline as he thought about what he would find. Awful scenarios began flooding his mind, but he shook them out. He needed to focus if he was going to find her before it was too late. There was an intense stress that seemed to dig its way into his heart, burrowing deeper the more that time passed by. The pounding of his heart filling his ears, forcing the slapping of his feet upon the concrete to fade away.
A crash behind him soon silenced his heart as if a hand had reached through his chest and squeezed it tight. He sloppily turned on his heel, nearly falling forward in the process, eyes scanning frantically about the room. Winn noticed a toy box to his right, lying in between two shelves. It felt too obvious, too predictable. Sort of like the point in a horror movie when a character makes their final mistake. His chest felt tight as his breathing became erratic, slowly stepping toward what he knew was a trap.
Suddenly he heard it. A thudding noise emanating from behind the shelf, it sounded panicked and desperate. The grip on his heart grew tighter as he carefully squeezed between the metal shelves, he was so close. He had to believe that you were within reach, that he could save you. Because if you weren’t, if he had to see something he would never be ready to see… Well, that grip on his heart may just crush it altogether.
An air current was barely noticeable as he scanned the wall for any sort of release panel, something to trigger the door. A press to the proper place and music, specifically that of a jack in the box, gradually began to play. The notes echoing down the halls and ringing in his ears as his fear began to grapple for control.
A sigh of relief escaped his lips as he works to pull open the massively heavy, metal door. As soon as the door opens, a trapped wind up toy makes a break for it. Frustration hits him hard as he stares down the newly exposed hallway, dimly lit with glow in the dark stars that cover the walls. He gulps at the sight, his courage slipping a little as he steps inside.
The door slams shut behind him, the thud echoing through the empty hall almost as loudly as his pounding heart in his ears. A deep breath in and out. At the end of the hall was a pitch black room, his hand immediately searching for a switch. Lights flickered on the moment he stepped further inside to continue his search, nearly startling the life out of him. That is, had it not been for the sight he found in front of him.
A giant doll box. His best friend was suspended inside a giant doll box, eyes closed shut. Winn had begun to connect the dots, eyes widening in fear. His father rigged that toy to fall, he wanted him in here. But why? What was he meant to find? Aside from his best friend. Shaking the theories from his mind, he did his best to focus on figuring out how to get her out.
He tore away at the plastic wrap, prying the cardboard apart, and tearing the box to pieces. Around her wrists and ankles were rope tying her to the back of the box, a metal sheet. So distracted by cutting the bonds, Winn failed to notice the figure lurking in the back of the room. Only the sound of a throat clearing would alert him, spiking his adrenaline levels through the roof.
“Dad.”
His smile sent a shiver down Winn’s spine as he held Ivae in his arms, carrying her bridal style and away from his father. Any steps away were matched, so he stood still as she began to stir in his arms.
“Ah, it's wearing off. This should be fun.”
“Why are you doing this? Dad, this is between you and me. Why drag her into this?” Winn’s voice fails him, cracking under the pressure of the situation.
“You’ve been ignoring my messages. So, I found a new media.” His father shrugs off the accusation with ease, simply focused on the fact that his son appeared. “I thought you’d enjoy the theme.”
“Enjoy? How can I enjoy the fact that you kidnapped my best friend, who I love, just to get me here. Don’t you see what’s wrong with that? I mean, can you not understand why this would upset me? What kind of father are you?” Winn was crumbling under the emotional strain, but his anger was fueling him.
“Oh, come now. You’re still my son, I just thought you needed a little motivation to visit, and I have an offer. You’re just like me, my boy, so much potential. I could help with that.”
Tears brimmed his eyes as he stared his father down, brow furrowed intensely. He knew that this behavior shouldn’t surprise him, and yet, it did. Every single time it was a dagger to the heart. It was his father trampling over him like a stampede.
“No.” Winn’s voice was sharp. “No, I am nothing like you. I would never do the things you’ve done. I help people, help save them and you, you destroy. We’re different people dad. You need to understand that my answer is never going to change.”
He was terrified of his father but he would no longer live in fear of becoming him, because he had something his father didn’t. He had Ivae and his friends to ground him. His father could have had that, but he threw it away. That was something Winn would never do, because he couldn’t live without the family he’s built and the home that has been created. So, to protect Ivae, he pressed the button on his watch that sent out his location to the DEO. He would turn his father in to save the people he cared about, because the cost was worth it.
“Winn? You copy?” Alex’s voice sounds in his ear piece, and he remains silent. “Winn if this is an actual emergency I need you to slip the word ‘prisoner’ into the conversation.
“I’m leaving, okay?” He attempted to step toward the door but thought better of it as his father sent him a glare. “What? Are you gonna keep me here as a prisoner, until I meet your demands?”
“If that is what it takes.”
“Winn, we’re sending a team in. Be careful, they’re about 5 minutes out.”
“Who are you listening to? I told you to come alone.” The expression on his father’s face grew more displeased by the minute. “I thought we could work this through, but it seems not.”
“I did and we can. There’s no one here but us three.”
“Three? You didn’t think I’d actually be in here, did you? After last time?” His father’s brow raised before he disappeared entirely. A concrete slab falls down, blocking the hall and the exit. The device on the ground begins to spin rapidly, a gas slowly flowing out and into the air.
~~~
Ivae’s eyes fluttered open, panic flooding her senses whilst she attempted to asses the situation at hand. Taking note of the box she was in and the bindings on her wrists, she struggled against the restraints only to feel a prick in her arm and sleep beckon her.
The next time she felt herself waking, she kept her eyes shut when she noticed she was no longer bound. When she heard speaking she kept deadly still, afraid of it becoming common knowledge that she was conscious. Instead her ears listened to the conversation around her, recognizing the voices almost immediately.
“...you kidnapped my best friend, who I love…” Oh, Winn. It was not the time to be distracted by such words but Ivae couldn’t help herself from wondering, to what degree? As she pushed the thought from her mind she realized that in that moment of shock she had moved. Panic shot through her veins.
“Ah, it's wearing off. This should be fun.” A million different scenarios of what could happen the moment her eyes opened began to run rampant in her mind. She nearly missed Winn’s father pull the rug from beneath their feet.
The sound of gas forced her eyes wide open, it was then that she noticed Winn was carrying her in his arms. She physically shook her head to shift her focus back to the current situation, her feelings would have to wait.
“Ivae? You’re awake. Are you alright?” She nods her head as he sets her back on her feet, eyeing the approaching gas.
“What do we do? Is there any other exit?” Winn shook his head, brow furrowed with worry.
“Winn? We found the control room, you father is gone but we can see you on the monitor. My team is doing what they can to find the room but there are no heat signatures coming up. And the even bigger issue, is that the room you’re in and the rate the gas is coming out…”
“We won’t make it.”
Without really thinking she grabbed his hand, eyes scanning the room frantically hoping for some way out to become clear. But none did. Winn gave her hand a squeeze as Alex continued talking through the speaker overhead.
“Supergirl is on her way but even at the speed of a bullet, I don’t know if she’ll get here in time. So I need you to remember the path you took, how you found the room.”
“I-I can’t, I was running without direction. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was or anything around me.”
“Nothing?”
“There was this toy between two shelves but that’s hardly helpful given the whole warehouse is filled with them.”
“Do you remember the type?”
“Uh, I think, I think it was a beach themed doll.”
“Hang in there Winn, we’re searching for it. Try and see if you can find a hidden panel or a way out.”
Ivae glanced around the room and then to Winn who looked determined as hell to find a way out. She glanced down at her scarf, brain running through possible scenarios. She removes her scarf, handing it to her best friend.
“Hey, what’re you doing?” His eyes were clouded with concern and panic, she knew he’d find a way out. But it was more likely that would take more time and she was determined to give what she could.
“If either of us are going to get out, its you.” He turns to face her and ties the scarf over her mouth and nose.
“No, we both do.” A sense of dizziness settles over the two as they scour the room for a way out, with no luck. Ivae is stuck searching the furthest wall from the device as Winn puts himself closest. She was going to give him a piece of her mind for being so reckless when they got out. If they got out. She pushes the horrible thought from her mind and turns back to the wall.
Winn drops to the floor to the floor moments later, her own body growing weaker as well. It takes everything in her not to run to his side, to keep on with her search. But her body cannot take much more and it isn’t long before she too finds herself losing the battle. She crawls with the last of her strength to his side, before the whole world goes dark and she falls into the nothing.
It’s a Bird (Plot bunny/Preview)
My Writing Fandom: Arrow, Supergirl Characters: Laurel Lance, Kara Danvers, James Olsen, Alex Danvers, Winn Schott, J’onn J’onzz (Hank Henshaw), Eliza Danvers, Oliver Queen, John Diggle, Thea Queen, Quentin Lance, Damien Darhk, Cisco Ramon Summary: In a universe where another Kryptonian pod doesn't crash land to Earth, Supergirl and her friends receive a different otherworldly visitor; on a different world, Team Arrow loses one of their own, but not in a way that they can initially understand. Additional Notes: Hello everyone! Since this is a holiday weekend for me, I thought I'd treat you all to a plot bunny I had. I'm calling it a plot bunny because to continue it, I would need an interested beta reader who has actually seen seasons two of Supergirl and five of Arrow, which I have not. So, if this idea intrigues you, let me know and maybe we can work something out. I have a vague idea of certain plot points I want to move forward. The pairings as of now are listed as undecided because it could honestly go any direction at this point where I've left off in this first chapter. However, I will state that my interest in pairings that include characters I haven't actually watched anything of (i.e. Lena Luthor) would likely be small. Otherwise, feel free to weigh in. At any rate, I hope you enjoy this idea, and we'll see if anything else comes of it down the road. Thanks for reading, and let me know your thoughts! *Can also be read on my AO3*
It didn’t get much better than a night like this. Family and friends, along with the possibility of a new relationship she’d been longing for for months. Kara was still beaming ear to ear thanks to that.
But Supergirl didn’t get nights off for long. As she sat amongst the others, a distant sound caught her ear, rising in prominence until she couldn’t ignore it.
Kara looked up.
“Kara? What’s wrong?”
Everyone else had stopped talking, but she hardly noticed. She’d placed the sound. It was a scream, and of terror.
“Be right back.” She left James’ side and hurried out the door. There wasn’t time to change, so Kara took off straight into the sky.
It took her several precious minutes to find her target — judging by the volume of the scream, she had thought it closer. But at last Kara spotted it; a figure in black, falling fast. She put on a burst of speed to intercept, getting her arms around the person and continuing her flight at a gradually decreasing pace to ease out of the momentum of the fall.
Kara looked down at the woman, for it was a woman with long, blonde hair and a mask laid over her eyes. Her clothing was mostly leather, and there was some sort of stick or baton sitting in a holster on her thigh.
Kara’s brow furrowed. “Where did you come from?”
There was no answer; the woman must have passed out shortly before she had caught her.
She didn’t look injured otherwise, and Kara wasn’t sure what a hospital might think of the whole mask situation. More than that, though, if she turned this woman over to the authorities now, she might not find out just why she’d been plummeting through the air with no visible starting point or any plan at a landing.
Nothing for it then. Kara turned back for home, taking care to tuck the woman’s body in closer as she cleared the window. The others all turned around at her entrance, taking the sight in with varying degrees of surprise.
“Uh, Kara?” Winn took a half step forward. “Who’s your hot friend?”
“I’m not sure yet. She was falling through the air, but by the time I reached her, she’d fallen unconscious. I need somewhere to let her rest until she wakes up, and then we can ask.”
She shooed Alex and J’onn off the couch to make room, and the two of them exchanged a look.
“Kara, she’s wearing a mask,” her sister said.
“And she’s armed,” J’onn pointed out.
“Well, it’s not with kryptonite, so we should be fine.”
“Do we know who she is?” James motioned around his eyes. “Under the mask, I mean.”
Kara shrugged, then leaned over to lift the mask off the stranger — who was still a stranger. “Nope. Guess we’ll just have to ask her.”
“Kara, honey,” Eliza reached to touch her shoulder. “Are you sure you want that happening in your apartment?”
“Oh.” She looked around, then down at the sleeping stranger. Kara switched to her X-Ray vision for a moment. There was something puzzling about her throat, but otherwise… “Her physiology suggests human.”
Alex stepped up next to her and felt at the woman’s wrist and forehead. “Heart rate and temperature are consistent with one.”
“So the D.E.O. isn’t the right place for her, and she isn’t injured, so a hospital won’t take her.” Kara shrugged. “I don’t know where else this can happen.”
“Maybe if I have a look at her recent memories, it might give us a better idea of what we’re dealing with,” J’onn suggested.
Kara and Alex both moved back as he stepped forward, eyes glowing red. His brow furrowed, and a frown grew on his face.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Alex asked.
“Her mind. It’s not strictly inaccessible, but it isn’t as open as a human’s should be. I’m only getting flashes of images that keep cutting out.”
“What, like the signal’s bad?” Winn asked.
“She was somewhere like a jail, I think. There were people in prison uniforms. And a man with white hair. Then there’s the falling. I can’t get much else.” J’onn blinked and shook his head. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, J’onn,” She assures him. “So to all appearances she’s human, but something is interfering with your telepathy.”
“I can probably still use a psychic push to wake her up. It’ll get us those answers you want faster.”
Kara looked out at the others. She didn’t want to hand this woman over to an authority — there hadn’t even been a crime committed so far as she knew — but she also wanted her friends and family safe. Her eyes landed on James last, and he gave a single nod.
“It’s your call, Kara.” There was so much trust in his gaze, she nearly felt swept away.
But Kara collected herself and nodded. “Go ahead, J’onn.”
His eyes glowed once more, and on the couch the woman stirred. Her eyelids fluttered, and in the next instant she sat right up with a gasp, her arms flying out.
Kara caught them both.
“Easy, easy! You’re not in any danger.”
The woman looked up at her with green eyes. “Wha— Who are you?” Her eyes darted around the whole room, taking everyone in. “Where am I?”
“I’m Kara, and this is my apartment. Who are you?”
The woman stared at her like she’d asked something very odd despite repeating her own question. “The Black Canary?”
“Yeah, that’s not a name,” Winn remarked.
The Black Canary. Something about that name rang a bell, but Kara couldn’t seem to pin it down.
She was distracted as Black Canary tried to tug her arms from Kara’s grip, and she eased up to let her go.
“Wait. Am I not—?” She felt around her eyes where the mask had been sitting. “Oh no.”
“It’s cool, we still don’t know who you are,” Winn told her.
“Then this isn’t Star City?”
“Nope,” said James.
“I don’t think I know a Star City,” Eliza added. Everyone else shook their heads in agreement as well, leaving Black Canary looking very confused and distressed.
“If we’re going to help you, we need you to cooperate with us,” Alex said, her voice trending more toward the stern Agent Danvers than her big sister. “So who are you really?”
The woman drew in a breath. “My name is Dinah Laurel Lance, and I have no idea how I got here.”
—-
To say that Laurel felt lost was an understatement. She couldn’t even guess as to the sequence of events that had led her here.
She’d been at the prison with the others, fighting to get the riot under control. Then Andy had betrayed them. After she’d convinced John to give things a chance with his brother, she couldn’t think what he must be feeling — assuming he and the others were still out there, somewhere.
With his powers back, Darhk had frozen them all. He’d caught Oliver’s arrow and turned to her with it, and then—
The floor had vanished out from under her. That was the only way to explain it. She’d gone from standing in front of him to suddenly falling, and through air. How had that happened?
Laurel couldn’t remember much about that past the blind panic. She’d been screaming, and something about that... she cleared her throat. “Can I have some water?”
“Oh, yeah. Um, Eliza?” Kara asked. A woman who looked to be one of the two oldest in the group nodded and walked across the open floor of the room to a kitchenette area, getting a glass and filling it. Laurel accepted it with a nod of thanks and drank. One hand absently rubbed at her neck, but she froze as she realized something was missing.
Her Canary Cry choker was gone.
“Um, when I was found, was there a- a necklace on me? It had sort of a silver-colored piece on the front.”
Kara shook her head. “The only thing we touched was the mask.”
Laurel frowned. Maybe it had fallen off while she was falling? She couldn’t believe she’d lost it after all the effort Cisco had put into making and developing it. It also didn’t make her feel any better about being on her own amongst strangers in a totally different place from home.
And there was still the question of how she’d gotten from falling through the sky to a woman’s apartment. “How was I found?”
Kara’s eyes widened. “Oh. Uh, well…”
“It was Supergirl,” one of the men blurted. “She- she works with Alex and Hank, so I guess she thought they could help. So she dropped you off and took off just before you woke up.” He looked around at the others as if checking with them for confirmation.
“Supergirl?”
That got a lot of disbelieving looks.
“Well, yeah. Supergirl,” another man said. “National City’s resident hero? That’s where you are now, by the way.”
Laurel had never heard of a National City, much less the hero that protected it. “Is she new?”
“She’s been here a year,” Kara said. “Just about, anyway. No one’s counting. But, if you haven’t heard of her, you’ve probably heard of her cousin,” she added in a somewhat glum tone. “Superman?”
“Nope,” Laurel answered. “I don’t know any super-people. What do they do?” Were they metahumans like Barry and Cisco in Central or magic users like Mari?
“They save people,” the only unnamed woman in the room stated. Though maybe someone had called her Alex? “Supergirl also works with the D.E.O. The Department of Extranormal Operations, which handles extraterrestrials,” she added at Laurel’s raised eyebrow.
“Extraterrestrials.”
“Oh, come on, you have to have heard about aliens,” the first man said.
“The concept? Yes. Actual aliens? No.” As if it hadn’t been enough to learn that time travel was possible only a few short weeks ago. Laurel put her head in her hands.
“Um, well, Dinah—”
“It’s Laurel. I mean, I’m named after my mom, so everyone’s always used my middle name.”
“Okay, Laurel,” said Kara. “Maybe you just tell us everything you can remember up until your fall.”
“Well, it doesn’t make much sense. My team and I were trying to get a prison riot under control. Damien Darhk had orchestrated it, and he used a spy we had trusted to get his powers back. I thought he was going to kill me,” she admitted in a hushed tone. “But then, it was like the ground disappeared, and everything was really blue for a minute, and then I guess... I was here. Maybe Darhk did it? He, um, he has magic.”
“He does?” None of them seemed to look totally thrown by that.
Laurel nodded. “Yeah. Sorry, could I get all of your names?”
“Oh! Right,” Kara laughed. She gestured to the woman on her left. “Well, this is Alex. We’re sisters. That’s our mom, Eliza. And our friends Hank, Winn, and, um, James,” she said, her smile turning up just that bit brighter as she glanced at the last man.
“And you all know this Supergirl?”
There were various nods or sounds of assent.
“I mean, we’re not super close. Maybe Alex,” Winn said. “But she’s a hero, so, you know, we all love her.”
Kara was grinning quite widely at that, and if Laurel wasn’t mistaken, her chest had puffed out a little.
“You said you were part of a team fighting a prison riot,” Alex said. She looked at Laurel with her arms crossed over her chest. “But you wear a mask.”
“Yeah.” Laurel glanced down. “Some people, they call us heroes. There’s plenty of others who just see us as vigilantes. But we’re just people trying to help bring justice to a city that has trouble finding it on their own.”
“If you were in trouble back home, maybe we should lend you a phone so you can call your team,” James suggested.
“Yes, thank you.”
He passed her his, and she stood on just slightly unsteady feet to walk to the other end of the room as she dialed. She could see the others talking amongst themselves about her. Laurel didn’t know what to do about that. They’d helped rescue her, but they knew her identity.
An automated voice told her Thea’s number did not exist. Laurel frowned and tried again with the same result, then tried her father to get the same message again. The only other number she had memorized anymore was Ollie’s.
It rang and rang. Laurel held her breath, waiting for the familiar voice, something to ground herself, comfort her. Finally it was picked up. “Hello?”
It was a man’s voice, but not his. Laurel hesitated. “Hi. Um, could I speak to Oliver?”
“You must have the wrong number.”
She didn’t, but she also did not know this stranger. “Okay. Well, thank you.”
Laurel turned back to the group. “I couldn’t reach anyone.”
“They weren’t answering, or…” Winn began.
“Either their phones have been disconnected, or someone else has the number now.” Laurel shook her head. “I don’t know what to do.”
“I’m sure we can help you find them,” Eliza promised. Laurel tried to smile in gratitude, but she was still thrown by the lack of ability to contact her friends and family. What had happened? Where was she?
—-
He didn’t know what had happened. None of them did. He’d been forced to watch the whole thing, but Oliver couldn’t begin to explain it.
Darhk had had them all frozen once Andy had restored the last piece of the idol to him. Laurel had been the closest. Oliver’s last action had been firing an arrow, futilely, for Darhk had caught it. He’d turned back to Laurel.
“I want you to give your father a message from me. I want you to tell him—”
Yet just as he had moved to strike his blow, a...thing had opened up in the ground. A hole. A temporary one, but a hole.
Because Laurel had fallen through.
Her eyes had reflected a moment of shock and then terrible fear as she had dropped out of sight. Oliver had felt the yell of her name he could not voice rumble through his very bones.
The blue circle in the ground had disappeared, leaving the floor where she had once stood intact. Like she had never been there at all. Damien Darhk had paused, looking down at it.
“Well, that was odd.”
He didn’t know if it had been a break in Darhk’s concentration or just pure rage, but without any warning at all, Oliver had been able to move.
His fist had connected with Darhk’s face, and the man went tumbling to the ground. Oliver had hauled him back up and slammed him into the wall.
“What have you done? Where is she?”
“I’ve done nothing!” Darhk had claimed, one of his characteristic laughs on the end.
“Liar!”
Darhk’s eyes had glowed as he’d managed to get a hand raised up between them, yet Oliver’s arm had not stilled. His fist had connected. Again and again.
“How—” the man had coughed.
“Bring her back!”
“Oliver!”
John had caught his arm before he could land another blow, and Darhk had slowly slid to the ground, his eyes drooping shut and his breathing heavy.
“You’re gonna kill him if you keep that up,” John had muttered. “And whatever happened, it wasn’t him.”
But if it wasn’t… “She’s gone, John.” His voice had trembled. Oliver had looked around, his view and his standing unsteady. His eyes had landed on the idol sitting on the table, and with barely a second thought, he’d swept it off to smash on the floor.
Andy had gone when he’d looked around, and Malcolm had moved to check on Thea. “Get away from her, Malcolm,” he’d snarled, making great strides to cut him off from his sister. Oliver had scooped her up into his arms.
Malcolm has calmly raised both hands. “Oliver, I swear I didn’t—”
“I don’t care. You’ve chosen your side.” How many times had Malcolm used and betrayed his family and friends? How many times had Laurel warned him?
He’d left the prison with John once the authorities arrived, some in ARGUS attire to cart Darhk away as he knew their secret. Back at the base, they’d set Thea on a medical cot and Oliver had dropped into one of the chairs by the computers.
He was sitting there even now, his head in his hands. Laurel had disappeared in some blue light, not of Darhk’s origin. But how could it have been anything other than magic? And where was she now? He refused to consider the idea that she might simply be nowhere. No, Laurel still had to be alive.
The elevator opened and Quentin Lance hurried out. Oliver’s heart jumped into his throat.
“I got your call,” he said to John. “Is Darhk still in custody?”
“He is. ARGUS took over it,” John said. “But that’s not everything that happened.”
“What do you mean?”
A groan from Thea’s cot interrupted them, and Oliver went to her bedside. “Hey, it’s okay. Careful sitting up.”
“Did we get him?” His sister asked groggily. Under better circumstances, it might have pulled a smile from him. Right now, the best he could manage was a nod.
“We did, yeah.”
“Where’s Laurel?”
Of course Thea would notice because of course Laurel would be there on the other side of the bed, holding his sister’s arm to keep her steady and checking her head for any bruise. If she were here.
He swallowed down a lump in his throat and looked from her to Lance. “We don’t know.”
Lance almost scoffed. “You don’t — what do you mean, you don’t know?”
“She disappeared, straight through the floor,” John replied, and without his helmet on Oliver could see how disturbed he looked by just the memory. “There was this blue light, and she was gone.”
“Gone where?” Lance stared at him, expecting something more when Oliver had nothing. “What- what floor were you on?”
Oliver shook his head. “She wasn’t in the prison. I’m sorry, Quentin.”
“But she’s not dead. I mean, she can’t be, right?” Thea asked, her eyes wide and afraid.
“We don’t know, Thea.” Oliver turned away. “We don’t know anything.”
The only thing they did know was that Laurel wasn’t here.
—-
Cisco sat up, an arm outstretched and a wordless cry on his lips. He stayed there for a moment, waiting for the harsh breaths he took to slow his heart rate down.
The same. For the seventh night in a row he had had the same dream. On some level, he felt it could be called a nightmare, but he just didn’t know why.
Nothing especially bad happened in it. It was just, there was a bird. A dead bird. And for some reason he always got a terrible sense of dread at the sight of it, building worse and worse with each successive night. This was the first time he’d woken up seemingly reaching for something, though.
He searched around on the bedside table for his phone, checking the time. It was an ungodly hour, of course. Why couldn’t his powers be the kind that let him sleep?
Cisco checked his messages and emails, then scrolled through the news app. Nothing of note, except a prison riot outside Starling City that had been fought by Team Arrow. At least he wasn’t the only one keeping late hours.
He set his phone aside again and rolled over with a sigh, closing his eyes and willing himself back to sleep.
For the first time in a week, the nightmare did not find him.
Winn Schott - He Protects the Stars (a S1 masterpost, part II)
The first post got too long, so here are episodes 11-20, the full second half, of Season One. :)
Me, rambling about my favorite cape-less hero, in chronological order. This is an appreciation post for anything and everything I can mention and that is all.
(the poor boy, he goes through a lot, and this is about the view of him we get this half. also, that gif is tagged as #winn schott #or is it jeremy and that is a legitimate question all the time.)
Episodic breakdowns under the cut again, enjoy!
This post will be reblogged as I add in episodes from E10 to the season finale.
1x11, Strange Visitor from Another Planet
a really mediocre title for an episode depressingly low in WinnContent
Kara: I miss my best friend, Alex.” We do too, Kara, we do too.
Winn. Awkward Winn. Upset Winn. At least coming to his senses enough to wish her a good day and smile, because even when he’s so unhappy, he’s never gonna stop caring about her the most.
Whenever they don’t actually write something for Winn to be in, but his desk appears in the background, they have his messenger bag slung over his chair so at least you know they haven’t forgotten about him. XD
You can tell he feels bad about shutting Kara down, initiating conversation the next time they see each other. “Space and time,” she offers. That smile he gives as the elevator closes tells you that they are going to be ok. :)
1x12, Bizarro
Another new tag added to the repertoire for this episode: salty cinnamon roll
Winn and Kara repairing their relationship, because heck, Winn will always care about her no matter what and I want to believe Kara will too. #supportive friend(s)
Cat found out from Winn what Kara’s favorite coffee is. I love all three of them so much. Winn doesn’t even use it to try and get back in Kara’s good graces, because he doesn’t like being manipulated and doesn’t manipulate the people he cares about, he just cares for them. Precious sunshine child. Please never change.
So offended by James’ questioning look. “I measured her for her suit!”
Is so observant of the people around him, he knew James was lying last time, and knows Kara is lying now. Also, these two opening scenes with them are actually very well written to break the ice, kudos to the writers for that.
even if the whole date thing is so awkward with James and Winn and Kara and all their recent/future history lol
but back to Winn. Calling James out on all James’ pretenses of “Adam’s great, yeah, who-hoo” - “You’ve never even met him.” XD XD #salty cinnamon roll
Reappearance of Winn’s bag standing in for a scene they didn’t write anything for the character, but need to remind us he does have a job there. *eye roll*
Two years. Two years’ worth of hospital/police records that Winn dug through to find Bizarro. And how long did it take him? Under 24 hours. #genius
I love that Winn is very quick to encourage James to not be the coward he was when it comes to Kara. Like, it’s incredibly awkward how everyone is crushing on her, but Winn putting his own feelings (now that they’ve been healthily addressed) to the side, and again calling James out on his crap as the dude is trying to date Lucy but more interested in Kara.... #supportive friend and #genius and just all around a good guy.
“Leave the bottle!” oh Winn. XD
1x13, For the Girl Who Has Everything
Look, the whole point of this post was to highlight that Winn is a true hero and honestly responsible for a lot of what goes right, it’s not my fault the show decided to focus so heavily on Kara’s love life, but here we go, back on track...almost.
He. Is. So. Concerned. About. His. Friend. that’s it - that’s the episode.
Winn telling the tick story to Cat is the funniest thing, also admirable how he’s the one trying to save Kara’s job like he and James agreed to do together. One thing I don’t think I can add to his Jack of All Trades list is lying. Concealing the truth? Yeah. Lying convincingly? Never.
Cat: “I have been watching you cover for her day after day, putting yourself and your job in jeopardy, and for what?” For a friend. For a person he cares about and would die for in a heartbeat. #supportive friend #hero
*sees an unknown person exactly replicating another and immediately wants to know the science of it* #nerd
“Hey Kara, wake up.” #supportive friend
Here we go! Winn being the one to hypothesize that the satellites being down could be something the invader’s are depending on. #genius #hero
Is the first one to realize Alex succeeded in saving her sister.
And is the only one present enough to talk to his friend and console her as she is jarred awake. #hero
With the gang, making sure she 1) could come back 2) save her job and 3) have a clean home to walk into and not be left alone. And being the one to crack jokes and make everyone smile. #supportive friend
Making sure that they are, truly, friends again. Yes. Good.
1x14, Truth, Justice, and the American Way
Not important, but the whole opening exchange between Kara and Winn is adorable and I love these two nerds’ friendship.
The arrival of Soiubhgsn
just pointing out the bag is standing in for Winn again while Cat is asking about Lord and Kara eavesdrops. #where is the boy
Aside: James is really good in this episode, more of that would not hurt.
More of Winn would be better though.
1x15, Solitude
#messenger bag (I don’t think that’s actually kind of bag, but it’s been doing a lot of stand-ins for Winn, and may I say, its acting ability is a s.e.v.e.r.e. downgrade)
“Toyman Jr.” never ever needs to be a thing
It takes Winn approximately two seconds to take Indigo’s traffic light remark and figure out what she’s doing, and then out of every single traffic light in the city, somehow finds the one with the most collateral damage and pinpoints it in time to decisively send Supergirl there and save lives. #genius #hero
-also, possibly is the one who hacks the traffic lights back to working order??? seeing as that’s the last incident and Kara isn’t in a panic to go save anyone else???
#cardigan hobbit
“He’s been mumbling to himself like that for over an hour, isn’t that the first sign of-” “Genius. Yes.” Thank you, Kara.
I appreciate the nerd vibes of Winn’s candy and popcorn, but heck. There are two coffees, a soda, and FIVE energy drinks. This guy is running on fumes, please someone fix him an actual meal???
Yes, let’s have the villain choke one of the characters, toss them across the room, and then have them jump up just fine and offer a snappy one-liner, because obviously they need zero time to recover from that. #protect him
Assisting Soudfgndf and listening to her when she opens up to him. #the most empathetic character on television
Really wants to help the DEO but checks with his friend first.
“You realize I’m learning an alien coding language in the time it takes to watch an episode of Doctor Who.” #genius
Not only helps the DEO reach the same conclusion as James, Kara, Lucy, and Clark’s information gets, but saves himself and the day by stopping Indigo by recreating a computer virus he accidentally made two years previously. #genius #hero
stands up to/comforts/??? Siobhan - we’ll get to her later.
1x16, Falling
Winn “computer droid” Schott Jr
“You are literally impervious to bullets and I’m worried about your safety right now”
Siobhan gets fired, Winn is again the only one to try and help (I promise I’ll address their relationship). #the most empathetic character on television
Winn and James’ concern for Kara, yes good.
Um, excuse me, but that is Winn putting a calming hand on James’ shoulder when he starts yelling at Lord. #supportive friend #priorities
The panic on many levels when he shouts “She killed Ms. Grant?!”
So, like, everyone remembers that Kara’s “best friend in the whole world” was very worried about her, even if he doesn’t appear at all in the last half of the episode, right? #where is the boy
1x17, Manhunter
Jack-of-all-trades #7: Assistant to Miss Grant. Open with Winn for the first time, if I recall correctly, being in on the whole group staff meeting in Cat’s office for breaking news coverage. Cat recognizes Winn as a valuable person to have around after recent events. Also, he has to remind her Kara isn’t there. XD (James helps, reluctantly.)
He is so supportive and encouraging to Siobhan?? Even when he knows she’s wrong?? And at the same time is getting her off Kara’s back??? #supportive friend and #the most empathetic character on television
Aside: Space Dad J’onn and Alex are good in this episode.
The way he stumbles to add “Jr” to his full name. Poor kid. #daddy issues is a tag I should have been using during “Childish Things”, but, well, that’s the entire episode.
Winn and Kara’s first meeting is a lovely moment. Platonic or romantic, if you don’t believe in love at first sight, you’ve never seen the way Winn looks after Kara as she breaks away for her interview. They are destined to be best friends.
Okay, but Kara’s shirt having snaps instead of buttons so she can easily become Supergirl in a second’s notice? That wardrobe design has Winn written all over it and you won’t convince me otherwise.
“Obsessive study of Kara for the past two years.” Cat doesn’t miss a thing.
Look at how disappointed he is, unhappy to tell Siobhan he found her out, and saddened that she would do that. #the most empathetic character on television
Someone please just keep this boy and his friends away from rooftops it never ever ever ends well and it’s going to give him a fear complex. #protect him
And his trying to help Siobhan. Again, always, never giving up on people and forever caring too much.
1x18, World’s Finest
His concern for both Kara and Siobhan is admirable, also, the times he and Kara get their best friends moments are always my favorite. She needs someone to confide in and he’s always there. #supportive friend
Ok. So. Winn and Siobhan never even had an actual date. Their entire relationship was built on her using him for her own ends whenever she needed something. Comfort, distraction, information, she got what she needed and invested nothing. It’s made very clear that she never cared about him. Now, on Winn’s side, it’s obvious he’s trying to move on from Kara in a healthy way. He just... finds absolutely the wrong person to be his girlfriend.
I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE WHOLE ICECREAM SCENE WITH BARRY. THIS IS QUITE POSSIBLE THE BEST SCENE IN THE ENTIRE SHOW. THE COMEDIC GENIUS, THE COLORING FROM WARDROBE, THE CAMERA MOVEMENTS, AND ESPECIALLY WINN AND BARRY’S INTERACTIONS. #BLESSED
Noticed Winn’s little point at the powered on computer like he’s offended someone has been messing with his stuff. XD #nerd
Aside: I hope Barry paid for the ice cream???
Dynamic Duo (TM). MORE OF THEM PLEASE.
Winn is enjoying James being the jealous odd man out for a change, and I kind of love it, I think he’s earned that much in the very least. ;) #salty cinnamon roll
Being the one to try and stop Crazy Eyes Silver Banshee, not by force, but by simply putting himself in her way and trying to reason with her, offering her help, caring for her. #hero
1x19, Myriad
Winn doesn’t get a lot of screen time in the two-part season finale, but there’s some good content in there even so:
Thank you, CW, for going one step further in the wrong direction from #messenger bag to actually hiring an extra to play Winn at his desk who doesn’t even look anything like him.
Scary little Myriad-controlled smile.
Friendly reminder that Mr. Schott Jr. reeeeeeaaallyy Does NOT Like Heights, and that Myriad (with Indigo, who may or may not remember the computer geek who threw off her groove last time) is used to make him be the one to jump off a building for a change. Also, friendly reminder that Winn was aware of what was going on while under Myriad’s influence. If he wasn’t scared of heights before, he would be now anyway. #protect him
#”nice socks winn”
Not sure why Kara isn’t concerned that her two friends who were just forced to jump off a building are now nowhere to be seen??
that’s literally all the Winn we get in this episode, folks.
1x20, Better Angels
Jack-of-all-trades #8: just, like, really good??? I’m sorry, I don’t know how to word this, but Winn is literally the first person shown to snap out of Myriad’s control: first by Supergirl saying the enemy has attacked his freewill and individuality, and then completely when he remembers his friend Kara, who is saying “you let me be who I’m meant to be.” The others don’t break Myriad’s hold until Kara reminds them of their own strength and ultimately calls them to action. #hero
James being awkward and Winn gracefully (if dorkily) backing off. #supportive friend
Winn gets in on the staff meeting again. He doesn’t even have to be called in specially, or need an ulterior reason for being there, he just joins the rest of the crew because he has a place there now.
Taking medicine for the headache that’s left after Myriad. #protect him
“A Guide to Caring for Your Superhero Best Friend” by Winn Schott Jr: Step 1) learn to immediately recognize when something is trouble your super friend. Step 2) ask if she’s alright. Step 3) offer her food, this has been proven to be helpful in the past. 4) try cheering her up with a joke. Step 5) listen to her when she decides to spill her guts to you. #supportive friend #the most empathetic character on television
*****STEP 6, love her very much and be very concerned when she gives a pretty speech and then leaves.
The .2 seconds we see of Winn while Myriad is at 70-90% kill me. Absolutely kill me. Everyone else is clutching their heads and faces, the pain of the attack overwhelming them. Obviously the pain is affecting our boy too, but the look on his face is not so much pain as it is sheer terror. Winn is five minutes away from dying, and he is in pain, and terrified and please someone protect him, he did not ask for any of this. (Kudos to Jeremy’s acting)
I’m hoping somebody gave our hero lots of aspirin and hugs.
Winn’s smile and laugh at the end family celebration (yes. they. are. all. family.) is LIFE.
That’s it for Season One!
Season Two, we get Agent Schott. :D :D And lots more impressive hero work for our resident genius, jack-of-all-trades, precious sunshine child. ;)
Supercorp prompt: "Actually, I've never been trick-or-treating"
So I had been saving this prompt for a bit closer to halloween, so here it finally is! Also Kara and Lena aren’t yet officially a couple for this fic but are on their way lol
“Actually I’ve never been trick or treating.”
They were sitting on the couch in Lena’s office eating donuts again. Kara had been giving Lena an enthusiastic history of halloween in the Danvers household before she asked Lena what she did for halloween growing up.
“You’ve never been trick or treating?” Kara’s mouth hung open in disbelief as Lena shook her head breaking off another piece of donut.
“I mean I probably went as a baby with my mother before she died. But I don’t remember. And Lillian never had time for those sorts of things.” Lena shrugged as she put the piece of donut in her mouth.
“What about boarding school?”
“Oh we had costume parties.” Lena smiled deviously at the memory. “But we never went trick or treating.”
“We’ve got to change that.”
“What?” Lena coughed against the food in her mouth taking a moment before she stared at Kara. “I don’t think that’s really necessary…”
“Of course it is!” Kara was already shrugging into her coat. “Halloween is something every kid should experience.” Kara echoed Alex all those years ago when she had just got to earth. It turned out that Alex was right about how much she’d love halloween. A time when everyone was dressed up as something not of this world. Plus Alex had dressed her up as a ghost the first year and she floated around, they were so pleased with themselves that no body could figure out how they had done the effects.
“I am not a child.” Lena reminded Kara, bringing her back from her memory to where she stood in front of Lena in her coat, purse tucked under her arm. “Where are you going?”
“You’re not a child, but its not too late to still go. And we are going costume shopping.”
“Kara.”
“Please.” Kara smiled, weakening all Lena’s fight as she held open the trench coat she had grabbed off Lena’s coat rack.
//
“Witch?”
“No.”
“Vampire?”
“No!”
“Why not? I feel like you could really put them off.”
“Gee thanks.” Lena stood in the aisle surrounded up cheap adult costumes her arms wrapped tightly around her middle. If it was up to her she would have had her costume custom made, not bought off the rack. But it was too late for that, honestly she was surprised there were any costumes left at this point.
“Wonder Woman?”
Lena shook her head. She might not have a lot of time on her hands to go to the theatre and watch movies but she did know that Wonder Woman was probably going to be the most popular costume of the year.
“You have the hair for it! We could put in a few curls, and bam! Wonder Woman.”
“I’ll freeze.” Lena nodded down to the tall boots and short skirt.
“Oh.” Kara stood on her toes looking over racks on the other side. “We could find you a long dark men’s coat. Diana wears one in the movie over her costume at one point, that would help keep you warm. Plus we’ll probably only go to a couple houses before we meet everyone at the party.”
“The party?”
“The costume party at the bar.”
“You didn’t mention it.”
Kara paused, she hadn’t mentioned it, she had got so excited to take Lena costume shopping she forgot.
“Oh.” Kara repeats, before turning to Lena looking a little sheepish. “Did you want to go? I don’t want to presume…”
“Kara. You just dragged me to god knows where to go costume shopping to take me trick or treating. I think I can handle a costume party.” Lena smiled, trying to loosen her body language.
“Alex will be there.”
“We’ve met.”
“And her girlfriend and my friends.”
“I believe I’ve met Detective Sawyer, Mr Schott and Mr Olsen too.” Lena took the costume, trying to show Kara some enthusiasm as she looked it over.
“Wonder Woman it is, now what should you be…” Lena started to push through the costumes for the first time, ready to exact her revenge. Kara didn’t have the heart to tell her she had a costume sitting at home she had picked out weeks ago.
“Sexy nurse?”
Kara groaned as she turned bright pink, adjusting her glasses.
“Why are these all sexy?” Lena shuffled through a bunch, “here we go!”
Lena held up a costume that made Kara’s stomach drop. She couldn’t lie, she had wanted to go as supergirl as a joke ever since Clark told her about the year he went as superman, but the idea still did give her a bit of anxiety.
“We could be the ultimate superhero duo.” Lena smirked. “You have the hair for it! We could put in a few curls, and bam! Supergirl.”
Kara couldn’t help but smile at Lena mocking her.
“Do you have contacts?”
“No.” Kara shook her head, there was no way she would be going without her glasses in this costume.
“That’s ok. You’ll still look great.”
“Then I guess we’re going to the ultimate superhero duo.” Kara replied as she led them to a till, Alex was going to kill her.
//
Lena’s driver dropped them off in the suburbs of National City with strict instructions to stay close because they wouldn’t be long. The streets weren’t overly busy, groups of children running from house to house with bags of candy.
“Here.” Kara held out a white pillow case. Lena hadn’t even noticed when she disappeared to have been able to grab them but there they were.
“Really?”
“We gotta do it right.” Kara replied seriously, almost drawing out a laugh from Lena as she took her bag and shook it open. “Where’s yours?”
“I’ve already done my trick or treating.”
“Kara!”
Before Lena could say more a little girl pulling on her mom’s hand interrupted them.
“I’m sorry.” The mom looked guilty. “She wanted to know if she could get a photo with you two.”
“Of course!” Kara exclaimed as she moved to stand at the girl’s shoulder striking a supergirl pose that had Lena vibrating with laughter as she shed her coat and mimicked Kara on the other side.
When the mom got her picture, Kara knelt down whispering in the girl’s ear before she ran off grinning, dragging her mom along to another house.
“What did you say?”
“I told her Rey is my favourite Star Wars character too.” Kara shrugged before taking Lena’s hand. “Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be.” Lena followed her to the end of a walkway, leaving her coat laying on the back of the town car.
“Wait here.” Kara ran up the steps, knocking on the doors before talking to an older woman, her hands waving erratically as she pointed at Lena. The older woman looking over at her before nodding with a chuckle and closing the door again as Kara returned back down the stairs.
“Your turn.”
“What?” Lena stood there holding her bag staring at Kara.
“Go knock on the door and say trick or treat.” Kara gave her a little nudge, as Lena hissed. “You’re coming with me.”
Kara followed Lena practically bouncing on her toes as Lena knocked on the door, the two of them saying trick or treat as soon as the door started to open. Candy was poured into Lena’s bag as the woman’s eyes danced.
“Beautiful costume dear. You have a wonderful girlfriend.”
“Girlfriend?” Lena lifted an eyebrow looking at Kara who shrugged, ears a little pink but the door was already closing.
“I may have told her that my girlfriend had never been trick or treating before and I was trying to give her the full experience and asked if she could help me out.”
//
“Fuck it’s cold.” Lena’s teeth chattered as they slid into the car, “How are you not freezing?”
“My costume has sleeves?” Kara offered as she stole a kit-kat from Lena’s bag, leaning away when Lena took a swipe at her.
They had only gone to four houses, so there was only a couple handfuls at the bottom of the bag but Lena was feeling strangely protective of her haul.
The two of them were feeling the sugar rush as they walked into the bar hand in hand, no one even turning to look at them as they passed through the sea of masks. Winn and James managing to snag a booth early in the evening, waving down Kara and Lena as they spotted them weaving through the crowd.
“Wonder Woman. Supergirl.” Winn toasted his glass towards Lena and Kara sitting across the table in his red star trek uniform.
“Where’s Alex and Maggie?”
“Playing pool?” Winn pointed over the back of the booth, to where Maggie and Alex stood, Maggie in a typical t-shirt and pants her hair pulled back in a tight ponytail her detective’s badge hanging on her hip, Alex awkwardly leaning over the table in a white medical jacket.
“Rizzoli and Isles?” Lena questioned, quickly looking over both women. All eyes at the table widening. “What?”
“You’re the only one that got it.” James laughed as he drank. “We all had to ask.”
“I mean I get Maggie, but why is Alex Isles?”
“She’s actually a doctor.” Winn piped in at the same time as Kara. “She has her medical degree.”
“And here I thought she was impressive just as an FBI agent.” Lena smiled at the table as she excused herself to go start a tab for the group leaving Kara alone to join Alex and Maggie.
“Seriously Kara?” Alex hissed as she wrapped an arm around Kara’s waist pulling her for half a hug, her other hand still wrapped around a cue.
“Lena picked it out.” Kara blushed as Alex glared at her.
“If Kara makes the joke of looking like Supergirl herself no one will take it seriously.” Maggie flashed her dimples at Kara before taking a shot, pretending to be disappointed as it ricocheted off the corner of a pocket and back to the middle of the table.
“And I think Lena felt more comfortable us being in a couples costume.” Kara didn’t think anything of what she said as Maggie and Alex exchanged looks over the table.
“What did Lena come as?”
“Wonder Woman.” Maggie answered Alex, grinning as Lena came over to the table passing Kara a club soda. “Supergirl and Wonder Woman. I love it.”
“Thank you.” Lena smiled politely. “I like the Rizzoli and Isles.”
“Thank you!” Maggie threw up her hands, “Someone gets it!”
“Absolutely. And much more original then Starsky and Hutch.” Lena smirked towards Kara who was shaking her head.
“Can I play winner?” Alex looked at her in surprise as Maggie happily handed over her cue.
“Sure. I think I’ve lost enough times for tonight.”
James and Winn gave up the booth when they realized they weren’t being joined anytime soon. Instead they joined Maggie and Kara as they stood against the wood railing watching Lena and Alex prowl around the table. It was a much more intense game then when Alex played with Maggie, Lena almost clearing the table of her half of the billiard balls before missing a shot giving Alex a turn to catch up. Eventually it came down only to the black ball, on Lena’s turn, letting her sink it with ease into the far left pocket.
“I guess I owe you a drink.” Alex smiled as she waved someone over, trying to eyeball Lena’s drink as Kara pulled her in for a victory hug, before making an order.
“Oh. I, uh, I already put the table on my tab.”
“Lena!” Kara leaned back to look in Lena’s face, “you don’t need to do that.”
“I know.” Lena pushed a strand of Kara’s hair out of her face before she went in for a second hug, burrowing her face in the crook of Kara’s neck. “It’s just my way of saying thank you… for tonight.”
Patient Zero (Part II)
A/N: Hi, everyone, here’s the second part of Patient Zero. Also, bear with me, there will be a Part III! Kudos to the anon that requested it and I hope you enjoy it!!
Lena Luthor x Zombie!Reader//Word Count: 1,529//Full Text
00:00. Play.
00:03. [Y/N]: [Camera shaking] Say 'hello' to the camera! [Laughing] [Lena]: [Laughing] Hi, camera! [Jack]: Hello [Smiling and waving]
Four years ago, Jack, Lena, and you had been spending weekends and days off at Jack's garage doing an impossible research. The three of you were well aware about the implications and obstacles of trying to find, the so called, cancer cure. Even when your college research had come down to hardly a few insignificant discoveries, you three had been more than content to spend those days together. You were friends and nothing mattered to you more than keeping that friendship. But now, Jack was dead, you were part of the living dead, and Lena had no idea what to do to help you.
It had been barely two days since the DEO team, Supergirl, and she had found you, and other forty three people, in your research labs. Thanks to whatever authority, they had been able to move you from the company's labs to another facility of the DEO. Only eleven trial subjects, including you, were now contained in separated cells. There were ongoing investigations about their identity, medical history, and health conditions regarding the clinical trials. A team of biomedical engineers was working, along Lena, to revert the effects of the serum, as the antidote she had synthesized only managed to stop the development of the symptoms.
She had spent those two days looking over and over again at your research, your formulas, notes, your own medical records; whatever that could help her understand how the serum had worked on the cancer cells. They had also recovered some of your personal items from the lab and your department, your cellphone and laptop. Lena had checked every archive you had regarding this project, and something more. You had kept photos and videos of those early days. She watched that video with nostalgia, like she could find an answer in it but unable to find it. She just didn't want to lose you too.
00:11. [Y/N]: [Clearing throat] Ladies and gentlemen, you're watching America's Next Top Scientist, starring your fave engineers, Jack Spheer, genius Lena Luthor and (Y/N) (Y/L/N).
[Jack]: Wait, how's that Lena gets to be called genius?
"Why are you still here?" Kara came into the lab, pulling Lena away from her distractions. "I thought J'onn had sent you home."
"Sorry, I lost track of time." She responded with a smile that didn't reach her eyes and put your laptop aside.
"Any news?" Kara stepped in, walking towards the table in which Lena had been working non-stop for the last four days.
"Not really," she sighted, "only what we already have but..."
"What is it?" Kara furrowed her eyebrows when she heard Lena's voice trail off.
Lena shook her head. "There's something off with the medical records, and (Y/N)'s last clinical tests are from three years ago."
"But, didn't (Y/N) have sent you everything?"
Lena remembered that day at her office in L-Corp, when you had sent the video and the research files had popped into her email. Everything is there. You remembered you saying, there was no reason to doubt that now. It will be easy for a genius like you to crack the code. Maybe it was Lena's exhausted brain but those last words resonated in her mind. Every document and piece of information you had sent had been considerably accessible, you hadn't put passwords or security codes... There was one somewhere.
"Where's Winn?" Lena snapped out of her thoughts.
00.28: [Y/N]: Because she is. [Lena]: [Laughing lightly] Mm-hmm, don't contradict the presenter, Jack. [Y/N]: Yeah, get with the program, Spheer. [Jack]: Alright, alright [Rising his hands and smiling] so, what's todays challenge?
Winn had spent a whole day corroborating every single piece of information you had provided. Time that Lena was told to use to rest. She reluctantly left the facility with the condition that Winn would call her once he could find anything. He had promised to do so and, twenty seven hours later, Lena was again on her way to the DEO. When she arrived, Alex, Supergirl, J'onn and Winn were already gathered on a computer room, waiting for her. Several screens were displaying all medical test results from the forty people involved in the medical trials. She looked at the screens not really understanding what was happening until Winn started to explain.
"Ok, so, I know the priority here is trying to find a cure for whatever is happening with our fellas in solitary confinement-" He started.
"Mr. Schott, to the point, please." J'onn stared at him.
"Sir, yes, sir." Winn cleared his throat. "Ok, so when we checked the documents (Y/N) sent, what we were looking for was essentially all medical information we could gather for the antidote, right? However, we never stopped to check if the information in previous test results was right."
"Yeah, that was not important at the moment." Replied Alex, crossing her arms. "We already knew the trial subjects were cancer patients and the diagnosis was confirmed in other records."
"What I mean is we never checked their personal information. Or the information stored by the labs and hospitals where their studies were made. Look." He typed something from his tablet and the test results moved on the screens.
"Why are there two copies of the same tests?" Asked Supergirl confused. Lena was the first to notice the differences.
"The numbers in the patients ID, age, birth date, and social security number are different." She took a step towards the screens.
"Yes, and I also found this." The screen changed one more time, showing what appeared to be the main menu of an app. "This is part of the system program used by the laboratory, and this is where they keep all records of research and clinical trials. And guess what? Their latest investigation is encrypted."
Lena stood there, watching the screens, when it all came rushing to her. This was what she was looking for.
00:43. [Lena]: Figure out how to stop the metastasis of cancer cells? [Y/N]: Yep [Small pause] that and stop Jack from blowing up something else in his garage [Laughing]
Winn had spent another day deciphering the encryption system the lab had used to shield their information. J'onn had tried to get the intel directly from the people that ran the company but it had been useless. As far as they were concern, this case was nonexistent. Eleven people were still in airlock cells, waiting motionless with haggard faces and famished bodies. Only when an alarm went off or other person came in close proximity to them, they seemed to react. The black blood had stopped leaking from their eyes and, according to their recent test, the cancer cells in their bodies didn't present further changes or development.
Whatever was happening inside of them had stopped. They hoped they would stay that way. Meanwhile, Alex, Lena and the biomedical engineers, were still fighting for a solution to counteracting the serum, in hopes that the patients could be saved. But if there's something you cannot fight no matter how strong, intelligent, or brave you think you are, is Mother Nature. No one had expected this to ever happen again. The earth beneath them started to shake, slight movements becoming violent in a second. Everyone at the DEO started to move looking for a safe place, as cracks appeared from the ground and the lights swung, and flickered, from the ceiling. Lena and the doctors stayed in the lab while J'onn, Alex, and Winn were the first ones to reach the central controls after the alarms went off.
"Not again." Alex growled.
"The emergency system is working but when the power comes back it will reboot everything." Winn was typing as fast as he could on the computers.
"You need to stop that." Said J'onn with a strong voice. A minute later, the system rebooted.
00:53. [Lena]: [Laughing in the background] [Jack]: Oh no, you didn't! [Y/N]: Oh yes, I did [Laughing].
The alarms were still ringing when the energy came back. Lena and the engineers were the first ones to see eleven emaciated bodies run loose. What had happened at your lab was happening again inside the DEO. She only had a second to recover and seal the room's door near to her, as a figure was fast approaching. Even the glass door was closed, the figure didn't slow its pace and hit the door with its head. At the impact, Lena took a step back, raising her hands as if to protect herself.
She had lived this moment before but now she was the one trapped inside the room. The patient hit the glass once more but this time with angry fists. She wanted so desperately to get away but fear had woken up inside of her, paralyzing her in place. That instant of fear was enough for her brain to notice an evident fact she had tried to ignore. She looked at the figure and felt the cold chills crawl through her entire body. Oh, what she would give to stop it all.
00:58. Stop.
"(Y/N)." Lena's voice wavered.
OTHER NOTES:
“To make Daxom great again.” Oh, no.
Ok. That flashback. I have mentioned before, how disturbed I am to find that the original confrontation of Kara’s prejudices towards Daxom have since been shown as actual deserved disdain, and how Daxom being actually exactly as bad as she said (to a caricaturish level) undermines Kara’s supposed lesson as well as treating Krypton as holier-than-thou despite all the huge flaws in its culture that have been made so evident, creating this huge us-vs-them divide with a really clear ‘good side’ and ‘bad side’ and absolutely zero nuance, etc. The flashback to Mon-El’s departure from Daxom as it actually happened does no favours to any aspect of the narrative: Mon-El is shown as hesitant and concerned for the safety of others in defiance of the prevailing Daxomite attitude, because the show is too afraid of the audience backlash if they show him being truly callous instead of just passively allowing it, while at the same time the narrative gives no quarter for Daxom and its people as a whole despite their undeserved fates. We are supposed to see Mon-El’s guard and think him awful, but what do we expect any ‘good’ guard to do? Maybe not kill that one guy, but the rest, with the ignoring everyone else in order to focus on rescuing the person he’s pledged to protect? Even killing the Kryptonian makes sense (is not morally ok, but makes sense) in the context of being exactly the kind of targeted violence that happens in the real world when people are ‘othered’. The coding of the behaviour is so transparent it’s disgusting, and coupled with that not-even-veiled MAGA line just before? Daxom’s Republicans to Krypton’s Democrats is a pretty fucking gross parallel to draw. I am very disappointed in the show for all of this garbage.
Remember when I fucking flagged Lyra as using Winn for her own ends the second she stepped on screen? Fucking flagged it.
This is a much better Hamilton joke right here than the one a few episodes ago, but that one a few episodes ago was still too much, and that steps on this, because, really? Two sizeable Hamilton gags with only a couple of episodes between them? You’re trying WAY too hard to be current, show. It’s embarrassing.
Uurrrgghhh, and now we’re doing the ‘oh actually Lyra had a good reason for being terrible!’ thing? This shit is so predictable and empty and I am so over it. Remember one episode ago when this show was momentarily good again?
Is Guardian fighting in a fucking glass factory or what? So many glass panes to be thrown through.
So, we pretending that Lyra’s lie and Mon-El’s lie are the same? Just ‘they lied’ is not a parallel, show. These are not comparable situations.
See, Mon-El says in his apology that ‘I was a spoiled, useless person, but I didn’t know’, and that’s a big part of what is making this whole storyline, all season long, so poor. The total lack of nuance in Daxom. The clear-cut morality of Kryptonians which, also, lacks the nuance of reality. If Mon-El was raised in that life, how much opportunity did he have for seeing the flaws in it and recognising them as such? We have no concept of his level of self-awareness, and refusing to allow people room to grow is not how you achieve progress. At the same time, Mon-El’s process of self-improvement on Earth has been so paint-by-numbers simple, it’s hard to take it seriously. If he’s found changing so easy, how entrenched were those ‘spoiled, useless’ teachings that made up his entire formative existence? Real people take years to overcome such things, not least because when it’s a commonplace feature of how you were raised, it’s hard to recognise that there’s even a problem, let alone dismantle the rationale in your own mind that has allowed you to be unthinkingly complicit. Expecting Mon-El to change like flipping a coin is unfair; blaming him for the circumstances of his birth is unfair; telling this story in the way that they have, with his self-awareness and capacity for immediate total overhaul not just of personality but of ideals apparently uninhibited and detailed with only the slightest of backslides? Utterly unrealistic. What should have been a long, hard journey of self-reflection, questioning, and honestly ugly behaviour has instead been casual comic relief and romantic faux pas, and that’s so insulting. I can’t support Mon-El as a character because I can’t support the ill-constructed narrative that made him; in basic terms, he doesn’t make enough sense. He’s too unrealistic to function.
URGH. This is such a fucking mess I am annoyed at myself for even trying to untangle it. That kinda happens when you’re trying to over-simplify your storytelling to this extent: the break from reality is too intense, and you end up with a heap of confusion that your audience can’t figure out how to engage with on a meaningful level. In university, the single most important word I learned was ‘ethnocentricity’ - the belief that your own culture/background is inherently superior to all others. On the surface level, this is plain ol’ racism - and can be many other ‘isms as well, as cultural background shapes our perceptions of gender, sexuality, religion, etc. Looking deeper, we see ethnocentricity manifest when we assume that our social or moral codes are automatically the correct ones, without pausing to question where we got those codes from, and whether or not, actually, there might be better ways to do things. I actually debated this directly, back in 2016 when two Australian men were executed in Indonesia for drug smuggling, and the debate over the morality of the death penalty was rife throughout the country. I’m not going to get into that debate again here, but as an example of ethnocentricism, it was a case in which a lot of Australians flat refused to acknowledge the possibility that just because another country has different laws which conflict with our way of doing things, doesn’t necessarily mean that the people of that country are corrupt, lesser beings with an under-developed sense of morality which we need to step in and correct. Different ways of doing things can be shocking to our sensibilities at first blush, but we have to think about why they are that way and how the backdrop of that logic informs the constructs we see, before we pass high-and-mighty judgment over others.
Supergirl’s Daxom narrative is a perfect example of ethnocentricism at work, with zero reflection: Kara is right, Mon-El is wrong, this cultural division is all-encompassing and without exception, the end. To be clear: I’m not suggesting that there’s a way to argue for, say, slavery being ok, but what there is is nuance to how people reach such a conclusion, and if we refuse to engage with the nuance we can’t engage with cultural learning, sharing, or understanding, and that’s how you end up with blank hostility instead of working towards more positive futures. Something being ‘obviously morally correct’ is (as evidenced through the entirety of human history) not enough to change systemic issues outright; if it were, the systemic issues wouldn’t have developed in the first place. Supergirl has run into trouble here because it’s trying to be topical, addressing the divisions in current US politics, but it also doesn’t want to actually have a nuanced conversation about the subject, and so instead we get heavy-handed black-and-white morality that only alienates the two sides instead of identifying common ground and building upon it to bridge the gap. Moreover, the show cripples its ability to explore these concepts in a better, more thorough way in the future, because it refuses to commit to the shades of grey in its situation and instead builds a two-camps concept in which any dithering or olive-branching between the two looks like ideological compromise and moral degradation instead of the complicated and painful process of learning that it represents in the real world.
The truth is that as nice as it is to sit on your moral high horse feeling pure and special while everyone else scrabbles on the muddy ground, you can’t understand the people down below and you certainly can’t help them unless you’re willing to hop down and work through the mud as well, and what use is ideological purity if you’re the only one who benefits from it? That doesn’t mean that we should all start behaving in ways that conflict with our moral compass because, hey, some people are bigots, but it does mean recognising that we are all in a process of self-improvement and if you’re not at least open to the possibility that your way of doing things isn’t the best way, you can’t progress yourself, nor does treating others with condescension help bring them to your way of thinking or at least to a middle ground from which you can proceed together. That’s all a much messier and trickier prospect than what this show wants to deal with, and yet it’s exactly the story they’ve blundered into the middle of with the ridiculous notion that they’re gonna be able to clear-cut their way out. Mon-El’s process should involve a lot of questions: not ‘this thing is correct because obviously it is’ or ‘this thing is correct because Kara says so’, but rather ‘I’m being told that my way is wrong: why? Why is it wrong? Why was I taught that it was right? In what ways has my belief in the correctness of this thing influenced my perceptions of other things? Is it possible that this thing I believe actually is right, and Kara is wrong? Why should her perspective be infallible? What are the consequences of either possibility? Does that jive with the rest of my understanding of the world? What else is altered by this change? Are these alterations also correct?’ and so on, and so on, ad nauseum. Exhausting, repetitive, and complicated, yes, but that’s the reality (not least because he’s supposed to be a literal alien from another planet, but, whatever). At first, I thought it was stupid of them to introduce Mon-El without bothering to spend time on his integration into Earth culture outside of a handful of gimmicks; now I see that it’s much worse than that. I don’t expect this whole arc to end well; I only hope that it ends quickly.
I Got You (but I don’t know how)
Danvers Sisters High School AU
She punched that Max Lord boy right in the nose a couple of years ago because he was taunting that nerdy Schott boy about his father.
And when Maggie Sawyer was being uncharacteristically slow in gym class because Eliza Wilke had gotten her kicked out of her home, Alex took a dodgeball to the jaw for her.
Alex knew how to protect people.
Physically.
She was good at it. Too good, her father would tell her. She needed to take care of herself, too. She needed to think about herself, too.
But suddenly, none of that mattered.
Because overnight, she gained a sister; someone she couldn’t protect if she tried.
And god, did she try.
But this girl who spoke English like she learned it from a computer; this girl who could touch the stars but shrieked and dove under the kitchen table when the popcorn maker started cooking; this girl whose body was impenetrable but whose entire planet was nothing more than atoms, nothing more than debris and bloodied memories in her mind?
This girl was unprotectable.
Alex couldn’t protect her physically.
She tried.
Kara dislocated her shoulder when Alex tried to prevent her from taking flight in front of people. Alex needed stitches from when she ran to the scene of that car accident, that explosion, that Kara walked away from unscathed.
She tried to protect her physically.
She never, ever could.
She tried to protect her emotionally, too.
But that?
That was even more impossible.
Because she couldn’t imagine the agony of Kara’s nightmares, even though her mother kept reminding Alex that Kara was just a little girl who had lost everything.
If Kara had lost everything and she could still walk, talk, go to school, fly, then Alex must truly be worthless; because if Kara was strong enough to endure all that and still, somehow, be awe-inspired by the sight of birds on the beach, then surely Alex must be the weakest girl in all the galaxy for crying over stupid things like chemistry exams and whether Maggie Sawyer liked her back.
At least, that’s what she thought.
That she was weak. That she could never protect Kara. That she was helpless. Worthless.
That she could never measure up. Not to Kara, not to the way her mother expected her to take care of Kara.
It took Kara to make her realize how wrong she was.
Kara found Alex on the roof one night, laying up and staring at the stars.
One night following a particularly grueling day -- a calculus exam followed by Max teasing Kara, Maggie punching him and shrugging it off as ‘anything for a Danvers girl’, followed by Alex getting into a screaming match with Eliza after she lied and took the blame for Maggie, because she’d be damned if she’d let the school call Maggie’s parents about this -- and Alex was laying on the roof, hands cupped behind her head.
Her body was still, but her eyes were wide open.
“Go away, Kara,” she warned without moving when she heard Kara float down beside her.
“How was your test today?” Kara asked, adjusting her glasses and listening to the increase in Alex’s heart rate with trepidation.
“My test? Seriously? All that super hearing of yours, and that’s all you’ve heard about my day?”
“You defended Maggie. Who was defending me. You protected her.”
Alex finally closed her eyes, rubbing them too hard with agitated fists, as though she could rub away the events of the day.
“Wouldn’t have had to if I’d protected you in the first place. Like I’m supposed to.”
“Alex, I can fly.”
“Yes, Kara, I know you can fly.”
“No, that’s not what I meant. I mean, I can fly, but -- “
“Is there a point to this, Kara?”
Kara worried at her bottom lip and stared down at the girl who was supposed to be her new big sister.
The girl who was looking more and more broken by the day.
“The point is, I don’t need you to protect me.”
Alex scoffed and opened her eyes. “Yeah, tell that to our mom.”
“I did.”
A pause.
“You what?” Alex sat up so quickly she nearly lost her place on the roof. Kara grabbed her.
“I got you,” Kara murmured, and Alex’s eyes flooded with tears. She blinked them away impatiently.
“I told Eliza that I don’t need you to protect me, but that even though I don’t need it, you do anyway. It didn’t seem to really help -- she just kept hugging me and talking about how I deserve all the protection in the galaxy -- but I did try.”
“Wait, it... you think I protect you? How? You said it, Kara, you... you can fly. You can cook Thanksgiving dinner with your face.”
“What’s Thanksgi --”
“You know what, never mind. I... I protect you? How?”
Kara sighed and laid down next to her big sister and waited. Waited for Alex to lay back down, too. When she did, Kara shifted closer to her almost automatically. Alex almost smiled despite herself.
“You know I had a mission when I got here. To protect Kal. But I can’t. He’s Superman on this world, and I’m just... I can do all the same things he can, but I can’t... I’m just... Kara Danvers.”
Alex turns her head to face her little sister, but Kara is staring up at the sky, her eyes glassy and her voice soft.
“But you make me... you make me want to be a Danvers too, Alex. To live up to that name. Because you don’t have these... these superpowers, but you protect people anyway. Winn, Maggie. James.”
“The messed up father situation squad, I know. Your girlfriend, too.”
“Lena is not my girlfriend, we’re just... that’s not the point!”
Alex laughed softly, and Kara readjusted her glasses and tilted her head so it was resting on Alex’s shoulder.
“The point is, you don’t have super strength or heat vision. But that doesn’t stop you from trying. And when I have nightmares? Don’t think I don’t know what you do.”
Alex froze. “I don’t do anything.”
“Alex. You come into my room and you hold me and sing to me until I stop having nightmares, and then you sneak back into your room before you think I wake up in the morning. I can hear your heartbeat, Alex, and I don’t need as much sleep as you do.”
“Then why haven’t you ever -- “
“Because if I acknowledge it, you might ask what I dreamed about. And I’ll have to tell you about Krypton and every single person I ever knew vaporizing and my parents and my aunt and how you’re not the only one who feels like they can’t protect anyone, I got here thinking I could at least survive if I could make my mission in life protecting Kal, but he doesn’t need it, he doesn’t need me, and I -- “
Kara’s voice cracked, and Alex stayed frozen for a moment longer before gathering her little sister into her arms. She kissed her hair and she rocked her back and forth, the tiles of the roof digging painfully into her hip; but she didn’t care.
“I got you,” Alex whispered, echoing Kara’s words from earlier. “I got you, I got you, I got you.”
She couldn’t carry Kara back through the window and into her bedroom, but she could sing to her, like she did when she had nightmares.
She could sing to her, sometimes wordlessly and sometimes not, and she could rock her back and forth gently, soothingly, wondering if they rock their babies on Krypton, too, her heart shuddering when she realized, all those babies.
“I got you, Kara,” she whispered one more time before falling asleep, arms wrapped around her, trusting her little sister to protect them both if they shifted in the night and started accidentally plunging off the roof.
Because maybe, just maybe, protection could work both ways.
