The Crow 3: Salvation (2000)

I’ll give The Crow: Salvation this much. At least its plot is more original than its predecessor. I’m not sure if it’s a better movie than The Crow 2: City of Angels but at least it attempts something different.

Alex Corvis (Eric Mabius) is executed for the murder of his girlfriend - a crime he didn’t commit. Resurrected by a mystical crow and given supernatural abilities, he has one night to clear his name and seek revenge for himself and Lauren (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe).

This chapter in the Crow series had a brief stint in theatres before being released on DVD. One theatre in Spokane, Washington. Fans of the series said it wasn’t given a fair chance. I’m surprised the series had any fans after the abysmal City of Angels. Had they seen this picture in theatres, I wonder if they would’ve called a boycott not for Miramax, but of this film itself.

Director Bharat Nalluri is working with a lazy, half-hearted, and speedily-written screenplay. This is one of those movies where everyone's read the script and knows where the story is headed, except for the audience. Alex Corvis hasn’t been dead 24 hours when he’s brought back to life (conveniently, no one seems to notice the missing body). Given superhuman abilities, he wanders the streets of Salt Lake City. The film doesn’t tell you he suffers from amnesia, Alex simply bumbles around like a drunken idiot while quick flashes of his memory bombard you at irregular intervals. We’re not told what the Crow’s abilities are (he is now able to turn into a bird and heal from any wound). Is Alex surprised when he comes back to life with crappy clown-ish makeup? No. Why? Because he’s read the script. How does he know where to find the corrupt police officers upon which he will rain vengeance? He doesn’t need to know. He’s dropped at the right spot by the camera when it’s time for the next baddie to bite the dust.

Throughout, people know things they’ve got no business knowing. As you might predict, the big climax has Alex confronting the true murderer: a man with a weird scar on his forearm. It's a good thing the bad guy wasn’t wearing sleeves that day. Though his identity is a mystery, I dare you NOT to guess it within 5 minutes. Anyway, somehow the killer knows a) that the crow is Alex b) that Alex suffers from amnesia despite never having met him or any other Crow before c) that at a specific time, at a specific place in the city, a confrontation with Alex would lead to a building blowing up and d) that the Crow’s only weakness is his pet. That's a lot of magical knowledge, even for a film about post-resurrection vengeance.

You could spend hours pointing out the flaws in this film. At one point, the villain drops a clue to attempt to throw Alex off his trail. As an audience, you know it's a fake. In the very next scene, Alex discovers the identity of the killer. Why even include a red herring if you'll undo it in the next scene? Just another example of bad writing.

I’m calling it. The Crow: Salvation is so bad it’s good. Not very unintentionally amusing but enough to keep you entertained. The performances are unconvincing, the special effects so-so at best, the plot ludicrous. The ending is so crazy you’ve got to see it to believe it. Kirsten Dunst plays a major role in the file and she must look back at some of the makeup she was given to wear in complete embarrassment. I didn’t even mention the body count, which is ridiculously high. Either Alex has a lot of innocent victims to answer for, or the entirety of the Salt Lake City police force was corrupt. The Crow: Salvation is not a good movie, I wouldn't watch it again, but if you're curious, get some friends together and ripping it apart as soon as you hit "play". That’ll make it somewhat digestible. (On DVD, September 16, 2016)
