Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 13: Die Hard 🦌 I end this little 'are they really holiday/Christmas movies, yes they are' block with one of the most argued/contended, which is really quite silly, as it's absolutely a Christmas movie, and a great one at that! It also set a new benchmark/blueprint for the action genre, which was starting to grow tired of the uber-macho musclebound ones that dominated most of the 80s. People actually enjoying/preferring a fallible and vulnerable "hero"? More likely than you think... Also, Alan Rickman was a gift, a gift to us all. "Now I have a machine gun...Ho. Ho. Ho." Whoa oh oh feelings

When the Emmy nominations were released this week, the exclusion of NBC's Parenthood made many "snub" lists. The only reason I wish it would have gotten something is it would have resulted in more viewers and allowed the extraordinary cast to not have to wait as long for the renewal news. 

I adore the show so much I DVR it so I don't miss a minute. I sometimes wonder if other people are not watching it because it touches nerves.

The Bravermans are like a lot of families out there. Zeek (Craig T Nelson) and Camille (Bonnie Bedelia) have been married for so long instead of everything being familiar, the marriage is crumbling a little. Camille feels neglected, Zeek doesn't get it and doesn't always see why he should. Sound like anyone you know?

There are four Braverman children - Adam, Sarah, Crosby and Julia. Each have their own personalities, but they are tied together by dysfunction and personal chaos and their ability to turn to each other. 

Adam (Peter Krause) is the peacemaker. He thinks it's his job to keep everything and everyone together. But on the homefront, he and his wife Kristina (Monica Potter) are dealing with their son's autism diagnosis and the burgeoning sexuality of their teenage daughter and at work, his boss sold the company to a spinned out skateboarder who doesn't exactly share Adam's vision.

Crosby (Dax Shepard) is the screw up. He impregnated a dancer who returned to his life with their son in town and while he tried to make a life for them, pressure, insecurity and, ultimately, Crosby's inability to express himself tore down most of what he had accomplished.

Julia (Erika Christensen) is the overachiever. She is a high-powered lawyer with an adorable, supportive house husband (Sam Jaeger) and the perfect child. But when she decides she wants another one she learns her husband, a former contractor, is not as happy with their life as she is, and while trying is fun, not getting anywhere isn't.

Sarah (Lauren Graham) is a hard one to pin down. On one hand, she got out of a bad marriage, but she did it a little late and while her son doesn't remember the bad times, her daughter certainly does and does not let her forget it. She's trying to piece her life back together in the bosom of her parents' home but behind her brave face are a lot of scars and the resulting doubts make it hard for her to work, love and raise her children.

Although the show boasts a total of six kids, the older actors - Mae Whitman, Sarah Ramos and Max Burkholder - have soared through heavy, emotional stories with grace and talent. Not that I doubted Whitman, who I've considered a champion since she played Sandra Bullock's daughter in Hope Floats.

I hope this season people will let go of their own struggles to watch the Bravermans battle their way through their fictional, but completely identifiable lives. I'm giving them a season's pass on my TiVo.
