Broke: pork is forbidden by the Law because of the symbolism related to the cultural significance of pigs in the time and place and society ancient Israelites lived in
Woke: pork is forbidden by the Law because the pigs in that region were sick with a contagious disease and Israelites didn't know about microbes back then so God had to save them somehow
Bespoke: pork is forbidden by the Law because Jesus as a human didn't like the taste of pork so His Father who loved Him very much made sure He will never have to taste it ever

I have a germ of a theory that good Christian fiction has stories that are less about shaving down your personality to meet some specific mold of what a good Christian looks like, and more about "how gloriously different are all the saints."
Not that the Christian life doesn't involve fighting against our own sinful nature and conforming ourselves to Christ-like behavior, but I think it makes for better, more realistic, and more universal stories when you also recognize that people have different gifts and flaws and they're going to be called to use their unique personalities to serve the kingdom of God in their own unique way, instead of assuming everyone has to conform themselves to a very specific (often secular-culturally based) image of good behavior. It makes for a much more vibrant story.

We all know that the reason why Bruce Wayne isn't religiously Jewish is because dc are cowards, but also because many of the community itself is cowards. I personally believe it comes from a lack of knowledge about what it even means to be religious because most of the community is Christian or culturally Christian. So as someone that would probably be considered not religious by Christians, but Religious by most other Jewish people, I think that Bruce Wayne fits in this section of being Jewish.
Bruce can't go to the Synagogue often because of the whole being Batman stuff, but he still goes on the high holidays when he can. He celebrates with the Kane family as well! And Kate would obviously understand if he couldn't come because she's Batwoman! Give me a Bruce Wayne says Yiddish curses. Give me a Batman that has a bunch of Chanukkiot that are just so pretty because they are rich and definitely have a ton. Give me Batfamily shabbat dinners when they are able to. Rest days on Saturday for the Jewish members when they are more members in the Batfam to make it work (and it being a mitzvah when he does have to be Batman on Shabbat because its a mitzvah to save a life). Give me Mezuzot on every entryway. Give me a Bruce Wayne who inherited his mother's seder plates and actually uses them. Give me a Bruce Wayne that says stuff like kein ayin hara before giving good news! Give me a confused Dick Grayson when Bruce insults him (its actually a compliment, but to ward against the evil eye you will say the opposite of what you mean) and then Bruce having to explain after he realizes that Dick has no idea why he just insulted him. Give me a Batman that follows Jewish values (more than he canonically does)
Just because someone ins't actively involved within a wider community of that Religion doesn't mean they aren't Religious! Or at least don't give me a culturally Jewish Bruce Wayne that doesn't do any of this. Thats just you stripping away all the Jewish parts of him.
Bruce Wayne is Jewish and you can't just ignore that
#The kane family is there from when he is a kid to when hes an adult#meaning they definitely had a hand in raising him#I think its very odd that alfred the bodyguard turned butler of the waynes to have been the one to canonically raise him#while his entire maternal side of the family is still alive and kicking#like guys please come on#and also I think it would be very weird that alfred didn't bring Bruce to his maternal family#that would just be out of character imo#but yeah I think its very small minded to think of being religious as a belief in god and going to church#because that is a very very small portion about what it means to be religious to me#also! I based off the Kane's name origin it would be very likely for the Kanes to be Irish Jews#oh and one more thing#Just because I consider him to be just Jewish doesn't mean that its impossible for him to be dual faith#We have no idea what religion Thomas was#we could say christian#but I like to say thats from Alfred and any christian stuff that the Batfam celebrate is not because of Bruce#but is actually from Alfred and any of the kids that are Christian/culturally Christian#nevermind have another thought on top of this mess#why would Richard Grayson ever be considered christian#press x to doubt#while I know nothing about Romani religious practices and I know that is on purpose from their community which I respect#the community does know that Dick is Romani#meaning he would follow their religious practices#which I think he would follow extra hard after the death of his parents#and there is also the argument that he could be jewish if he was raised in a household that is Jewish and holds Jewish values#but yeah the Wayne manor has only one confirmed christian in it and its Alfred#batman#batfam#bruce wayne#kane family#kate kane

realised that my misguided understanding of BC meaning Before Christ and AD meaning After Death implies that my brain just flatout accepted the idea that jesus was born, lived to be a grownass man, and then died betwen the years 1 BC and 1 AD

People who were raised with accepting parents don't know how lucky they are. I've had at least three older queer people tell me "You're going to have to come out as trans eventually! You'll feel so much better after coming out!". Shut up.

ok i'm almost done with the new firmament chapter, i have So Many thoughts 👀
#keeping my thoughts in the tags bc it's late and this in not going to be very coherent#positive thing first: i did enjoy the lore!! i'm a sucker for lore dumps and i love to connect dots so it was a very fun read to me#that said. it was fun but also convoluted af in some points so i saved everything in the journal to analyse it#after the entirety of firmament comes out. i have Many Thoughts about the shames mention and the judgements#but i have Zero Braincells to elaborate them. they're all going in the red string board until further notice#one thing i did NOT vibe with were the christian references but you all know that about me by now#i'm just trying to appreciate the funky cosmic horror vibe here i don't need a gloria in excelsis deo reference#(i understand it conveys a specific vibe but. there are many other things that can do that)#talking from a character pov this chapter was SO PERFECT for my guy's own flavour of insanity. drowning him in violant forever >:)#also. he wasn't happy about erasing the prisoner's memories. he understood it was necessary but he didn't like to destroy them#(i ended up leaving him with Love)#speaking of the prisoner. what the fuck is going on with him. i need to study him under a microscope#(and reread everything when i have more braincells)#i'm also very glad to finally have a bit more info about the vulgate and the apocryphal realities#this chapter answered a few questions and i hope the nex one will answer even more#tldr: very cool lore even if it was Confusing AF sometimes (but we still have more chaoters to read so we'll see)#+ i love zenith so fucking much it's my favourite roof location so far!! psychic damaging memory beam city <333#anyway goodnight#fl spoilers#chitchat

On the topic of autism, although it had no name in his time, so we'd never be sure, but Hans Christian Andersen was a very odd, childlike man who wrote beautifully, could befriend others in letters (like Charles Dickens), but made such a terrible house guest in Dickens' eyes and that of his family, the friendship ended, and it took Hans Christian some time to realize it was over. I could relate, I could easily befriend folks in text online, when they bonded with me over shared ideas, but some would become suddenly very cold and cut things off if they saw me in video (often had disheveled hair, I really hated brushing because it hurt...) or heard me speak over the mic.
People are terribly shallow and cruel. They won't want to associate with someone who looks or acts visibly different, they're worried about their prestige or reputation or whatever being sullied by being seen with this comically strange person... or find it too exhausting to accomodate someone with special needs.
Hans Christian loved to make shapes out of paper clippings since he was a child and Dickens' family hated it. Hans Christian couldn't shave himself and needed someone of the family to do it for him. Hans Christian could not bear negstive reviews and cried, face down, in the mud outside of Dickens' home. The family found him a terrible guest, but the poor man was clearly very socially unaware and needed support... of all the stories and character he wrote, he identified with the ugly duckling (and the little mermaid)... The Little Mermaid was my favourite and my first special interest growing up.I don't think it was that the duckling was only accepted when he became beautiful, but when he happily found his own kind and was accepted, when he realized he was judging himself by standards he would never fit into (a gosling will never become a duck, but he will grow into a swan!)... but maybe that wasn't immediately clear, because humans too only treated him kindly as an adult.
There's a lot that the ugly duckling says when he was younger, that if you keep in mind the author relating mostly to him...
"But it's so refreshing to float on the water," said the duckling, "so refreshing to feel it rise over your head as you dive to the bottom."
"Yes, it must be a great pleasure!" said the hen. "I think you must have gone crazy. Ask the cat, who's the wisest fellow I know, whether he likes to swim or dive down in the water. Of myself I say nothing. But ask the old woman, our mistress. There's no one on earth wiser than she is. Do you imagine she wants to go swimming and feel the water rise over her head?"
"You don't understand me," said the duckling.
"Well, if we don't, who would? Surely you don't think you are cleverer than the cat and the old woman-to say nothing of myself. Don't be so conceited, child. Just thank your Maker for all the kindness we have shown you. Didn't you get into this snug room, and fall in with people who can tell you what's what? But you are such a numbskull that it's no pleasure to have you around. Believe me, I tell you this for your own good. I say unpleasant truths, but that's the only way you can know who are your friends. Be sure now that you lay some eggs. See to it that you learn to purr or to make sparks."
"I think I'd better go out into the wide world," said the duckling.
"Suit yourself," said the hen.
And the finale, where the swan does not become conceited, because he still remembers how it felt to be excluded and hated.
I wonder if that's how his popularity as an author made him feel, after being strange and awkward as a shy, quiet child...

anyone else losing sleep over the fact that Cyrano spoke abt willingly sacrificing the chance of ever being happy someday, as long as he knew it would ensure the happiness of someone he loves, to both Roxane & Christian separately — & then had it ripped from him anyway before he was able to make that sacrifice, without ensuring a thing? yeah me neither
#Cyrano de Bergerac#quotations#theatre#French#langue et langage#analyses#characters#hey guess what. the word 'bonheur' comes up 5 times in this play. this is 4 of them#(the other one was Cyrano saying 'le bonheur est là !' right before he was abt to confess to Roxane at Arras.#his Happily Ever After was on his tongue then. he could taste it. & lost it for good in mere moments)#anyway I just think it's wild that it's almost exclusively Cyrano who uses this word in the whole play#& almost exclusively in the context of the death of his happiness. not like...being happy#ofc the boys in act IV aren't outright saying 'I would sacrifice my chance at happiness for you' the way Cyrano did to Roxane#but also...they basically are? 'how do you expect me to go on knowing I caused you to sacrifice your chance at happiness?'#OR RATHER '...knowing that you sacrificed your happiness for me?'#god. an OT3 would've saved so much of this tragedy#but none of these pretty heartfelt words mattered in the end anyway! it didn't matter whom Cyrano was going to sacrifice his happiness for!#bc it was ripped from him 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊#sorry king too slow use it or lose it#although I suppose he was sacrificing it for both of them by the end#he became rlly concerned w the idea that Christian know Roxane loves him#as much as he was concerned w keeping Roxane as happy as she could be in widowhood by keeping her husband's memory radiant#(even though all her rosiest memories of Christian were of Cyrano. as she told Christian at Arras much to his consternation)#((that whole weeping dialogue as she is dragged from Arras praising Christian. praising Cyrano.#& Cyrano is forced to accept the adoration the compliments the fact that she sees him in this light. & yet never claim it))#(((*ugly sobbing intensifies*)))
