#I also love the use of the theatre space as setting & as framing device in this play
#the characters are all here in the theatre to see a play! just like you! ^_^
#it makes the segue from the real world to the story world sooo much smoother
#& there is a lot of disorienting chatter going on even as the named characters appear on scene (Ragueneau & Le Bret & Christian)
#bc I'm sure the audience irl is also taking its time to find seats & settle down
#the only real difference & it's kind of charming is the 1640s theatre experience vs the contemporary one
#& by the time Cyrano shows up we are REALLY watching a play. the transition is complete
#Cyrano in the story world is also an audience member but in our world he is a character on the stage
#the DELICIOUS duality of this... & the extent to which Cyrano is aware of his performance
#after he shuts down La Clorise the audience is lamenting that they came to see a play & missed out
#& I suspect part of why the tirade du nez & the ballade du duel are so Big is bc he knows & he's making up for it
#he's giving them the show they missed
#the stage directions even say 'people take notice & stop exiting the theatre. by the end they have taken their seats again'
#I just love love looove the way Cyrano is often performing in his life
#he establishes & behaves around a 4th wall of sorts in his life
#which by extension makes him rlly delicious to watch bc it feels like he's Aware of the actual 4th wall
#he never breaks it & only leans on it occasionally e.g. to make a witty aside
#but he's such a PERFORMER of a man that it fits the character perfectly & doesn't break immersion the way most 4th-wall breaks can
#& THEN THIS LINE AT THE END
#Qu'est-ce que c'est tous ceux-là ?—Vous êtes mille ? / Ah ! je vous reconnais‚ tous mes vieux ennemis !
#WHILE STARING OUT AT A THOUSAND AUDIENCE MEMBERS
#& DELIVERING IT WHILE NOT OF SOUND MIND
#which imo is THE only condition where it makes sense for a character to break the 4th wall
#I just--- AAAAAAAAA
#DADDY I LOVE HIM

Also noteworthy: the comedians are still in costume when they rush out to go see the Porte de Nesles fight! They’ve become the audience but they haven’t fully left their role as characters inside Cyrano’s play yet. The show goes on and we don’t get to see its conclusion: instead, we immediately move on to Act II, where Cyrano recounts his exploits, then to Act III, where he slips under Christian’s mask, then to Act IV, where he tragically doesn’t get to drop said mask, then to Act V, where he’s both playing “le viel ami qui vient pour être drôle” and pretending not to be dying… so Cyrano’s masquerade literally covers the entire duration of the play, from his first appearance to the panache line! 🪶
so what do u think about plays
i like how in a theatre time and space are necessarily metaphorical. i don’t like how plays always have to begin with someone walking onstage and talking. too many directors try to work around this by having someone walk onstage and brood in silence for a moment before talking. this is worse.

Cyrano can't bring himself to express his love, but he stumbles upon Christian who is full of the same feeling that he doesn't know how to express in a presentable way, the poor baby, so fine, Cyrano will help him be what he was meant to be: Roxane's ideal lover.
WWX can't bring himself to express his resentment, but he stumbles upon undead WN who is full of the same feeling that he doesn't know how to express in a presentable way, the poor undead baby, so fine, WWX will help him be what he was meant to be: someone who scares the shit out of the jianghu (and will beat JC's ass).
Both situations reach a breaking point: WWX's own resentment that he expresses through WN wordlessly wrecking people ends up killing JZX. Cyrano's unhinged writing and sending love letters twice a day (in a warzone) in Christian's name without the latter even being aware of it ends up horrifying Christian and things end badly. Both Christian and WN are being worn as a mask for the other who then proceeds to have zero restraint in expressing their feelings by proxy.
Post-canon Ningcheng where WN doesn't know exactly why he keeps hooking up with JC
Then there's a night hunt with JC and WWX and LWJ and now that they're all in the same place, WN finally gets hit in the face with the realization it's WWX's attraction, expressing itself through WN because WWX is in denial about it (like WWX is in denial about resenting JC, and!projecting that on JC; like WWX once hated JZX so much that--) and WN is WWX's creature

Swashtober 12: Cyrano de Bergerac!
From the play by Edmond Rostand, based on the life of the historically big-nosed 17th century writer and wit who *actually* fought like a hundred fellers on his own at the Porte de Nesle (he also really chased off that actor, and wrote great love letters, many of which were published and subsequently cribbed by Rostand for the play).

If I had gone to the theatre in 1897 and experienced Cyrano de Bergerac for the first time with no warning, I would have been diagnosed with female hysteria on the spot because of the way I was acting

it's so fucking annoying that Gérard Depardieu was such a phenomenal actor when he's such a monumental turd of a human being, that bitch is ruining Obélix and Cyrano de Bergerac for me 😡
#in my mind Obélix and Cyrano can't NOT have his face but every time I see it I have a moment of disgust now smh#obélix#cyrano de bergerac#upthebaguette#gérard depardieu

Eksik olsun!
Her sabah kahvaltıda kurbağa mı yemeli?
Sabah akşam dolaşıp pabuç mu eskitmeli?
Onun bunun önünde hep boyun mu eğmeli?
İstemem! Eksik olsun böyle bir şöhret!
Eksik olsun!
Ciğeri beş para etmezlere mi “yetenekli” demeli?
Eleştiriden mi çekinmeli?
“Adım Mercuré dergisinde geçse” diye mi sayıklamalı?
İstemem!
İstemem! Eksik olsun!
Korkmak, tükenmek, bitmek…
Şiir yazacak yerde eşe dosta gitmek.
Dilekçeler yazarak içini ortaya dökmek?
İstemem! Eksik olsun!
İstemem! Eksik olsun!
İsteyince Ay’a bile gidebilmek.
Başarıyı alnının teriyle elde edebilmek.
Demek istediğim asalak bir sarmaşık olma sakın.
Varsın boyun olmasın bir söğütünki kadar.
Yaprakların bulutlara erişmezse bir zararın mı var?

HOLY SHIT Y'ALL Megamind is literally a retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac. It is so obvious. I am so stupid. I can't believe I didn't notice this until now. I even thought about a week ago that it was a cute touch they had named the female lead Roxanne! 😫
But yeah so there's this guy who's crazy smart and bold and stylish and good at flair and Presentation! but he lacks the confidence to court the girl of his dreams, whose name is Roxan(n)e, because she's made it known that she's with his rival. Also he has a disproportionately large facial feature!
Instead of fessing up he disguises his appearance so he can woo Roxan(n)e with his voice and words and intellect, pretending to be a new suitor. He doesn't confess his deception until Roxan(n)e figures it out herself and confronts him, and he dies at the end of the story in one final, tragic display of daring and panache.
And then someone looked at that and asked the obvious question "Yes but what if he was also an alien mad scientist supervillain with a minion who's a fish in a mechanical gorilla suit?"

Not romantic not platonic but a secret third thing (you’ve been trying to save him from himself throughout the entire play, but he’s tragically good at everything he does, and that includes being doomed by the narrative)
#cyrano de bergerac#henry le bret#cyralebret#Sort of?#My favourite flavour of these two is aroace Le Bret in the midst of THE romantic play#Lots of potential for growling AND the angst of his devotion Not Being Enough#In case you hadn’t guessed Le Bret is my favourite character after Cyrano of course#Christian gets a solid third place#Everyone in this play is exceptional though#random ramblings
