LOS ANGELES (AP) — As wildfires raging in the mountains cast an orange glow behind the downtown Los Angeles skyline, Southern California residents were jolted awake Thursday by another reminder of Mother Nature’s might.

It was an all-too-familiar feeling for locals when a 4.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area, unleashing boulders onto a Malibu road, shaking Santa Monica’s 1909 wooden pier and waking some people from bed. No injuries or damages were immediately reported.

This photo was taken at 4:19 pm today (July 3rd, 2024). It shows a wildfire in Southern California that burned over 800 acres (3+ square kilometers) before it was finally extinguished around 5pm.

The column of smoke was visible from forty miles away. I’m not kidding - I drove for a half-hour through the Mojave desert watching the smoke cloud get bigger and more ominous until I was parallel to it and could see the flames. Said flames were visible from at least a half-mile away so they must have been taller than a person. (I didn’t take the photo until I was about two miles away with a reservoir/water catchment basin between me and the fire. It was much more impressive from inside the car).

Sections of town were evacuated. The building I took this photo from lost power. It would have lost a lot more than power if the wind had been blowing the other direction.

Don’t light any fireworks tomorrow.

oops stared directly at the sun multiple times bc it was bright pink / red and i was trying to capture images of it and all of them turned out shitty anyway like literally what is thee Point of smartphones having fancy cameras if you can't take perfect clear photos of the sun being pink !!!
