ultimately it is a book about humans' continuous love affair with water and our love of swimming and as with most things humans love written from the point of view of a human who loves it will always focus primarily on what we love and why and it will be anecdote first and for most. i think that's fine. if i pick up a book by someone who is author first and scientist/researcher second (if at all) i except it to feature the author quite heavily, especially if it's about something the author themselves has an amateur interest in.

which is to say: i wanna go swimming again. i miss the water, i miss the girl who could spend hours in the water without growing bored or cold. i wish insecurity and depression didn't take it from me. i wish that one girl i met the first day of swim team didn't quit because we were placed on the wrong team and she got scared out of wanting to come back. i wish i'd made another friend there, i wish i'd wanted to keep doing it. i need to go swimming again

interesting as the story about the baghdad swim team is, i wish the chapter on community had a wider lense on the topic, rather than just narrowing in on this one instance of swimming bringing togetherness. the author does talk about who swims and who doesn't, historically, and obviously each chapter has one main story it tells, rather one story or one person from who we jump off into the "angle" of the section, but i really wish we'd heard more arguments of community from outside of this combat zone swim team. maybe i just noticed it more in this chapter and it's prevalent in the rest of the book as well, but there was a little too much focus on the framework story and the personal experience of the people the author spoke to, and not enough about the rest of society. even just in america there's a lot to be said about who learns to swim and who doesn't. and she does touch on that, i'm not saying she ignored it, but idk. maybe i just was more bothered by the feel good story from the us cultural attaché in iraq in 2008 than i was the other stories so far

the premise that The Change gets all messed up for alberto, say it's something that can happen from stress, &/or happens rarely and you just have to wait for it to resolve itself....used as some parallel to struggling through some emotional turbulence / upheaval / questioning / Realizing Things, etc etc

#I am losing my fucking mind #I am so sick of being treated like I'm the reason we're in this spot and having the sacrifices we HAVE made completely ignored or downplayed #I KNOW there's more to improve on but FUCK #we don't go out with friends and haven't in over a year #the two times I did go out with friends it ate me up inside because I had to spend money #I was disgusted with myself #we haven't gone to a sporting event in at least two years #we haven't had a single date night in the same time frame #and yet we get criticized for fucking. buying gifts for our birthdays and christmas #we probably spent less than $80 for christmas fuck offffffffff #and I got shit for buying my growing two year old clothes because she had NOTHING TO WEAR FOR WINTER!!!#but no that can't possibly be true we got so many free clothes from friends it's totally impossible that we didn't get anything past 18mo #TWO YEARS AGO #so obviously I'm just spending all our money on shopping sprees obviously this is all my fault I'M the problem #and now I'm seriously considering giving up swim class and a new insulin pump entirely :(#why should those get an exception but not the small hobbies keeping us from going insane #genuinely idk how I'm going to make it the next few months #we're so fucked #and God knows if I'll be able to breast feed this time #or if we'll be stuck paying boatloads for formula again #not to mention how bad the hospital bill will be...#*just to clear things up this is not a vent post about my husband it's about the family giving us financial advice :P
