i realize this looks finished, but technically i'm still deciding whether to add a background or not lol. still, for the sake of sharing a proper WIP, here's a line or two from an araleyn brainworm WIP that i started reworking yesterday (mild tw for religious guilt and period-typical internalized homophobia from aragon's pov):

She remembers sharing her bed with Anne at Henry's behest, remembers the nights of tossing and turning and trying not to think about Anne asleep next to her-- remembers waking up to dark hair spilling across her pillow and the press of blood-warm bosoms against her own, softer than sin, as hot as the Devil, remembers lying still as death, mouthing prayers into the heat of Anne's neck like an act of penance.

Anyways, I think the tsv legal system would be absolutely Buck Wild so I made a little guy to explore that. Like, contract law would be insane. "Oh we have a new case from the Grinding Lord's people? How many dead?"

I was toying with the concept of lawyers all having to be contracted to the Smiling and Headshaking Child when they get admitted? Half a, "trust us to see your side of the story" type-deal but also a means of ensuring the efficent administration of justice. Bring too many pointless cases or refuse to direct your client to alternative dispute resolution? In the baby you go!

Of course, since the equivocating nature of the Child is counter intuitive for an adversarial system, a lot of lawyers also contract out to different gods or worship something in secret. My character is a junior lawyer who is absolutely desperate to prove themselves (bc they have mommy issues and want the partner to like them so so bad) so they've started worshipping a Liars God in order undermine their opposition's evidence! Which has been, great for their career and horrible for them. Oh no pookie, do the lies just keep piling up?? Are you getting tangled up in the web you've spun to protect yourself???

Despite the fact that theyd literally be a Web Avatar if they were in tma, they had a very strong faith in the justice system when they started out. "Well yeah those workers got sacrificed but hey, they knew what they signed up for! We wouldn't let it happen if it was illegal, right?" I'm sure there was also an element of, rip to those guys but I'm different ngl. Now that they're actually working in law, they are rapidly waking up to the fact that this is Not The Case.

I've summarized it before but it's been a while and some things have been updated so here's another quick summary, under the cut because of allusions to suicide:

Cole kills himself prior to canon by way of train, and ends up in the Cursed Realm. He meets Morro, and initially the two of them don't interact all that much until Morro figures out Cole's supposed to be the master of earth. Morro teaches Cole how to fight, Cole teaches Morro ballet because he doesn't want to owe anything to Morro, and they bond and it's nice and sweet and the Preeminent is looming over everything!

When the Cursed Realm is opened up and Morro and Cole slip out, Morro possesses Lloyd as per usual. Where things change is that Cole comes in separately and pretends to be enemies with Morro, allowing him to get in good graces with the ninja. He sticks around, helping them in their attempts to get the Realm Crystal before Morro can, and finds that it's actually... not that bad, hanging out with these guys.

But Cole knows where his loyalties lie. When the ninja get their hands on the Realm Crystal, Cole steals it to bring to Morro, who uses it to free the Preeminent as they planned. But Cole's time with the ninja had an effect on him, and he really cares a lot about Morro. Like, a lot. And while before that saw him being willing to follow Morro wherever, now (with some nudging from Wu) it's got him moving to work with the ninja to stop the Preeminent. There's a brief fight between him and Morro that doesn't do anything but affirm that they both really care about each other.

When the Preeminent's defeated and the ninja are victorious, where does that leave Cole and Morro? Wu offers to house the two, but Morro needs time and space after everything, so he and Cole set off to parts unknown. They don't return until Day of the Departed, and even once they have bodies again they're still not certain about their future. But they're here, and they're together, and there's a whole wide world and a whole wide life for them to live. So why not try?

this block is 2.5"x2.5" unmounted linoleum, printed with an ink pad on mostly regular neon copy paper. like most of my single color pieces, i sketched straight into the block with sharpies/fineliners, tinted it with a stamp pad, and got right to carving! i'm still getting used to the power grip cutters over the speedball ones--theyre sharper but also since the blade is Not just a bent sheet of metal i've been struggling a bit cutting at the right angles. curves are giving me some trouble! but they also cut a lot easier and are better to hold, so it's worth it to get used to them.

i've been accumulating carved blocks, taking casual little prints to conventions and zinefests to trade! so a few people out there in the world have got my first lino prints in distribution.

when i get a chance, i'll do a proper print run, and add them to a shop (which doesn't currently exist but will!)

and, dont tell anyone, but i have a two color print in the works! that one's taking some more planning though.

What are your thoughts about Vanijeanne and Dominoé? A lot of people think that they’re forced and have no chemistry whatsoever, especially with Vanijeanne. As a Vanoé shipper, I don’t really mind Vanijeanne but I see a lot of people who are annoyed at that ship. Could you give your perspective on this discourse?

Y'know anon, generally speaking my opinion on anything that can be labeled "shipping discourse" is "I am an adult woman with a job and thus physically incapable of caring about this." It takes a lot for me to find other people's shipping habits actively annoying, as I mostly just. ignore and/or block anything that I'm personally not into.

My personal thoughts on shipping are also colored by the fact that I have a somewhat uncommon relationship to the concept. My engagement with fandom has become extremely focused on analysis rather than transformation in the past few years. I am much more hung up on focusing on canon and canon only than I think a lot of other people are. My opinion on Vnc ships is mostly defined by "do I think they're attracted to each other in canon?" which I realize is not how everyone else picks their favorite romances.

I suppose my take on DomiNoé is that I don't ship them, but mostly that's just not really the context in which I think about their relationship. My read on canon is that Domi's crush on Noé is unrequited. I don't think he's shown evidence of being attracted to her, and I also think it would really undermine the amusement park arc's thematic beats if it turned out Domi's jealousy of Jeanne was "justified." I wrote way more about this previously.

I love Domi and Noé's relationship. I find it tragic and fascinating, and there's a lot of love between them. Given the physical/blood aspect of their whole thing, they're like, super close friends with benefits in which one of the friends is madly in love with the other. And also the one that's in love is deeply traumatized and mentally ill and obsessed with not being a burden to the other guy. And the one that's not in love is compulsively unable to recognize both the crush and the trauma. I could write about their weird-ass bullshit forever. How could you say they don't have chemistry?

However, I'm aware that "I think Noé's feelings are platonic and I love digging into their tragic dysfunction" isn't generally what a person means when they say they "ship" DomiNoé. So like, I dunno man. My relationship to their whole thing is kinda separate from the concept of shipping. I'm just here to watch the toxic drama.

And on the VaniJeanne end it's like. Their relationship is a whole complicated can of worms that I cannot begin to get into properly in this post. They're toxic they're in love they're doomed to fail they're each other's parallels. Whether I "ship" them depends heavily on your definition of ship.

Do I want the series to end declaring Vanitas and Jeanne as true love and Vnc's one true couple? No. Do I seek out fanworks about their relationship? Generally no. Do I think their canon relationship is healthy or all unambiguous romance? No. But do I find their whole thing really fascinating? Absolutely.

VaniJeanne is a relationship that starts with an extremely non-consensual kiss. That instance of assault is then followed by multiple scenes of Vanitas goading Jeanne into yet more physical intimacy/sexual contact that she very much claims on the surface not to want. And that, kids, is what we might call sexual harassment and coercion. That is not a foundation that you can build a healthy relationship on.

Furthermore, I will admit that I find it really unsettling when a certain small subset of VaniJeanne fans cannot admit that the non-consensual scenes between them are what they are. Back when the anime was first airing, I saw a lot of people new to the series start talking about how much they shipped them after episode three, when their only romantic interaction was the forced kiss. And I suppose that's my most discourse-y opinion about this whole thing, because I do not like people who cannot tell when something is meant to be a depiction of assault.

I realize that Mochijun abruptly changes tones to comedy during/right after the kiss, but still. I do think uncritically romanticizing that moment speaks to a pretty striking lack of media comprehension. The entire point of that scene (the hostage plan, the kiss, the dhams' commentary, etc) is the reveal that Vanitas is a freaky little asshole (affectionate).

However! Their relationship doesn't stay purely in this realm of exclusively non-consent. They evolve during the date and Gévaudan, and as of my writing this (hello post-57 hiatus), their whole thing has gotten more complex. I think Jeanne is getting a lot out of having Vanitas there for her at this point, and Vanitas is starting to treat her more like a person rather than a prop to bounce his trauma responses off of. I can't say much more about it because I frankly just haven't unpacked everything from more recent VaniJeanne yet. I haven't worked out what to make of it besides that it's compelling and bizarre.

Anyway, if you want my more specific thoughts on VaniJeanne stuff, you can read more about why I think Vanitas kissed her in the first place and why I think the violation of consent motif kinda works for Jeanne and her story. The lack of consent itself is absolutely serving a purpose in both their stories.

VaniJeanne are two deeply damaged people using one another to cope with their respective traumas and illnesses, and it's wild and fascinating and very often (though not always) unhealthy as hell. I don't think "forced" is at all the right word to describe their whole thing. But at the same time, I do find uncritical romanticization of their more questionable moments eyebrow-raising at best.

At the end of the day, like I said, I just don't know if "do you ship them?" is the best lens to ask this question through. I probably don't, by most people's definition, since I'm cheering for endgame Vanoé, but that doesn't mean their relationship isn't interesting as hell. And even I have to admit that I find some of VaniJeanne's later and fluffier moments genuinely sweet and fun.

VaniJeanne and DomiNoé aren't my preferred picks for endgame romances, and I don't personally tend to seek them out in fanworks. And at least in DomiNoé's case, I don't think canon supports a mutual romance. But that doesn't mean I find their relationships annoying or have anything inherently against people who have them as their preferred ships. I think talking about VaniJeanne responsibly takes a bit of care and nuance, given how much their relationship deals with the violation of autonomy and consent, but that doesn't mean I'm, like, against people shipping them.

They're the closest VnC currently has to an official couple, and I am, as established, obsessed with canon. By definition I cannot disregard them.

Also, like I said at the beginning, I tend to just block anyone that I see with a particularly bad take and then move on with my life. Aside from being a bit startled when I occasionally come across, like, some real weird pro-vanijeanne-assault youtube comments or whatever, I devote very little mental space to "shipping discourse"

Swinging a bat at a hornet's nest here, but dear god I want the kny fandom to shut the everliving fuck up about Giyuu. They can't characterize him correctly, it's all "aw, sad emo awkward boy" but then they take out the teeth. They never want to acknowledge he's literally suicidal, never want to acknowledge that, while he doesn't mean for this to happen, it's his fault no one likes him. He's all "uwu sad baby who's just misunderstood." Like yeah!!! He is misunderstood!!! By you, bitch!!!! Also???? Stop shipping him with everyone??? Esp because his most popular ships are with Sanemi and Shinobu? The two characters who.... like him the least? Like, canonically? And like, ik this is my own personal preference, but I hate the "enemies to lovers" dynamic where they're already on the same side but just argue and don't like each other. (I actually argue that's not even enemies to lovers, it shouldn't count as enemies to lovers unless they are literally trying to murder each other, on opposite sides, completely different morals, etc etc). Because it's like... They're on the same side, if they were going to like each and get along, they probably would have.... They just hate each other. That's all I can see. And like, that was a little tangent, but the point is, I just don't see Giyuu meshing well with Shinobu or Sanemi (Shinobu, ever. Sanemi in a strictly post-canon way where everyone's dead and they're latching onto each other in an unhealthy way because they don't have anyone else). But... people tend to just shove Giyuu into a relationship with one of them (or Tanjiro, that's another common one), and use that as an easy fix all to Giyuu's destructive tendencies (if they even acknowledge them at all) and it's like wow!!! You took everything even mildly interesting about this character and got rid of it for a bland ship! Congrats! Why are you doing it? Why are you entertained by this? I literally just do not fucking get it

And for Chainsaw Man.... I'm gonna be honest, I don't interact with the Chainsaw Man fandom a whole lot because I feel like I'm not gonna like how they talk about the series lmao. Most of the Chainsaw Man stuff I see is stuff reblogged/written/drawn from a very small handful of ppl I trust the opinions of lmao So I actually can't think of something that really irks me about the fandom, but that's just because I barely poke it with a ten foot pole, I know it's out there. So ig the closest thing might be that group of people who got really into Aki/Angel and are now getting pissy that Denji and Yoshida aren't "canon." Like please. Please I'm fucking begging you. I can't here to rant about my health system I had for the funky bmc point and click game which is kinda weird cause usually point and click games don't have health bars

Basically jeremy would have a mental health bar that certain things trigger to increase or decrease (some are set in stone like for example after dywh Jeremy's mental health bar will always be set to 0 but also sometimes choosing a bad dialog option will cause it to decrease) and depending on how high or low it is you could get different dialog options to chose from, when it's higher you get better options and when it's lower you get worse ones, anyways it's pretty stupid but like I think it's pretty funky sjfggjjgn

Anyways!!! i actually kinda love how that idea works? i saw you mention it before and it seemed interesting but then i didn't end up doing anything w/ that idea when i drew my take. tbh i really like how it makes the whole dialogue options more stressful!! it fits the game's vibes pretty well i think. also makes for more interesting routes/endings!!

big fan of the alternate dialogue options due to the mental health too oguhfujg. maybe if jeremy's mental health is superrrr low at the end you can't escape the squip at all, and if its higher up you might actually have a shot at resisting?

Also ive been playing a bunch of lobotomy corporation recently so a few aspects of the way that health system works is on my mind. Maybe if you picked certain dialogue options before, later ones that are the same from a different route could actually do more or less damage or change it from a postive effect to a negative one.
