on twitter, a viral thread started where people around the world shared their translations of “If I must die”, the last work of Dr Refaat Alareer also known as "the voice of Gaza". A beloved poet, teacher and life-long activist for Palestine, he was recently assassinated along with members of his extended family by a targeted Israeli air strike. His loss leaves a hole in the heart of palestinians all over the world.
Below the cut, I’ll be posting the translations of his poem, with links to the original posts. Unfortunately, tumblr limits posts to a maximum of 30 images. I will update when I can.

#probably one of the most beautiful threads to ever grace twitter's rotten husk of a platform#i really earnestly almost cried#when people say the world stands with palestine#they mean they speak with palestine as well#israel murders palestinian poets to silence their voice. their culture. their lifeblood#in response the world amplifies his voice tenfold#but what a loss#what an unforgivable loss#i hope it is some consolation to those who loved refaat that his words are now immortalised in languages all over the world#that he has united so many people in their pursuit of palestinian freedom#please please please feel free to add your own translations onto the post in reblogs#i just havent seen anything about this thread on tumblr yet#im just the messenger#palestine will be free#the words of refaat alareer will be immortalised#and his students will carry on his legacy#ah but it is almost 5am and i havent slept#when i wake up i will add more#free palestine#israel#refaat alareer#rest in peace

I love being multilingual. I love reading books so much. and I know most of langblr and bookblr is about academia or classics but my heart is in children's literature. I grew up with my own language and my own country's literature. I get to have my childhood favorite books in my language. and then as I grow up and learn others I get to enjoy other people's childhood favorite books. sometimes I've progressed enough in my language to enjoy those foreign books in their own original language and be filled with joy as I realize how this would have shaped a generation of people. I get to go "what is this word" and look up and have a spark of joy as I memorize a BIG word in a new language. I get to gasp at reveals and twists and turns and fairy tales and romances and horrors of all your children's literature because my language level is still progressing and every new word fills me with wonder. I get to have my childhood and I get to have other people's childhood through my childlike language abilities. I love it. I love reading books!
#everytime I read children or middle grade children's books in my non-native languages#my heart BLOOMS with joy#this is like being a child again. I would never miss it for the world#and especially not to avoid judgement of total strangers who are snobbish about children's literature#yes I'd love to learn your language#yes I'd LOVE to know your childhood favorite books#let me speak your language read your language#walk on the path that is made of your language#please please pretty please?#studyblr#langblr#bookblr#multingual#multilinguist#please feel free to tag this with your native language and your childhood favorite books (series are welcome!%#if I ever get to know your language I will try to read your childhood favorite books

During my mini hiatus I fulfilled my dream of visiting Norway! The most surprising thing was hearing Lithuanian being spoken literally everywhere. My mum and I always speak Lithuanian to each other, so it was incredibly bizarre for people to overhear us and then come speak with us, or to have waiters/shopkeepers switch from English to Lithuanian. I’ve never experienced anything like it before, and I had no idea so many Lithuanians live in Norway! I absolutely ADORED this, it made all the places we visited instantly feel like home. Despite all that, I learned a bit of Norwegian and discovered that it’s literally the cutest language. Language learning is absolutely wonderful
#But fr it made me so happy 🥺 I rarely ever get to use my lithuanian so this was such a pleasant surprise!!#When we arrived in Oslo we sat down at a restaurant and were discussing how ridiculously expensive everything was -#- and then the waitress came over and asked (in lithuanian) if we were ready to order 💀💀💀💀#We were struggling to find our hotel and we asked two ladies on a bench who were speaking lithuanian where we could find it !!#At a food festival in Bergen there was a stand for lithuanian chocolate so we were tasting there and had so many Lithuanians come and chat#And soooo many more instances like this !!#Imagine spending 99% of your time not speaking a language outside of the country / without your family#and then all of a sudden everyone speaks this language in the least expected place. Woah!#If I wasn’t so settled in France and if I was a bit less poor I would consider moving to Bergen. I loved itttt !!!!#studyblr#light academia#studyspo#langblr#norway#cottagecore

It’s getting late (for me that is) but what about Jason first meeting with the rest of the council (Frostbite, Clockwork, Pandora and etc)?
You mean: Abominable Snowman, Benjamin Button and Mommy-sorry Step On Me? (Jason's crush on Wonder Woman did in fact transfer to Pandora)
Jason generally likes all of the council, and all of the council likes him in turn because he makes Danny happy.
He met Frostbite first. Danny took him to the Far Frozen to get checked out and to be sure the Baby Ghost was healthy and stuff. Jason had been forewarned and honestly, by that point, yetis were just one of those 'yeah that tracks' moments for Jason. Jason asked Frostbite, as a joke, if he could give him a piggyback ride. Frostbite picked him up, plunked him on his shoulder and booked it. 10/10 Jason had the BEST time. Definitely his favorite doctor.
Clockwork he met next, and it basically went:
Clockwork: I see you found your knight young king.
Danny: Yeah, thanks for WARNING ME
Jason: Who the is this fucker?
Danny: imagine a grandpa given unlimited power over time but retaining the 'stay off my lawn' energy but towards the time stream.
Jason: Ah
Clockwork: Wonderful. Off you two go
He then yeeted (yote?) Them through a portal because a member of the Flash Fam had severely fucked the timestream doing speedster shit. Luckily CW had smashed a hat on Jason's head first and he was in human form so the Flash fam member didn't recognize him. They were a bit too occupied with Danny yelling at them for fucking up and ripping them out of the speed force. The Flash fam member bought them lunch. (This was not the first or last time CW sent Danny to deal with the Flashes. They knew of him, and were all more than a little frightened of Danny. They think he's like. A speedforce demon or something. Theyre glad he eats burgers and not their souls) it was fun, even if they were stuck in the 40s for a bit until they cleaned everything up and got the Flash fam member back in the proper timeline. (You can imagine this as any of the Flash fam)
Jason met Pandora when she came to spar with Danny. And he just. Instant puppy crush. He watched this Amazonian woman beat the snot out of Danny and it was the best day of his life. If Fright Knight hadn't already claimed him as a protég he would've been begging Pandora to train him. She thinks Jason is cute and is always happy to spar with him when she's around.
#zee answers#dp x dc#danny phantom#dc x dp#dpxdc#dp x dc crossover#the king and his red knight#the king and his red knight au#tkahrk#tkahrk au#jason todd#halfa jason todd#jasons pretty chill with most ghosts once Danny explained how they work#like. these people speak a language Jason intrinsically understands. fighting. and theyre all so wild and unapologetically themselves#they remind him of the nicer Gotham rogues so that helped him settle faster#he also love CWs fieldtrips. hes gotten to see so much of history and he loves it#hes also gotten to get literal first editions of his faborite books FROM THE TIME THEY WERE FIRST PRINTED#he also gets to fuck with the flash fam regulalry because they will not STOP FUCKING WITH TIME#like youre speedsters NOT TIME LORDS YOU SHITS#the flash fam is more scared of Jason now than Danny. jason yells at them more :( they want the fun guy who is distracted by science#not the angry tank man running after them so he can yell at them snd make them feel like misbehaving kids#also the flash fam literally never talks about the speedforce demons to anyone who isnt in the fam.#but sometimes they show up to work with this like. haunted af look to their faces and if anyone asks theyre just like 'flash things'#other people out here running from internal demons and the flash fam is running from their real demons(Jason and Danny)

tbh the survival of small languages and dialects of all stripes is deeply important to all our cultures-- and I don't mean this in a weirdo blood-and-soil nationalist way-- because it helps to keep different ways of thinking and seeing alive. Often, languages come with their own perceptions on time and colour and days and night, anything they could possibly have. Major languages too, but the smaller ones are always at risk of being lost to time... and with them go the context, the meanings and the different perspective that its individual speakers could have had.
For instance, in Scots, there's a fundamental minor difference to time and how it relates to the individual compared to standard English. In Scots you can often hear folks saying phrases like 'that's me away' (or awa' in very broad Scots, pronounced a bit like awah), when you're looking to leave a place. Taken literally in English that would be incorrect, as you are not in fact physically leaving, and it's not like you're watching your own body wander off out the door. However, in this case the 'what is about to be', and the 'what is right now' are functionally the same thing. Time becomes a little malleable in the Scots way of looking at it.
Of course this is hardly the only example and I am sure people can add their own examples of similar but... it's interesting to think about, isn't it? How your language approaches both the physical and the abstract, and how its constructed your brain to think. Because language physically shapes your brain, and knowing more is always good for the old grey matter.
#chatter#language#scots language#linguistics#i love the scots language now#I used to be IMMENSELY embarrassed about speaking it#and if anyone wants to know why you are well within your rights to ask!#the Scots-speaker angle is a very strange wee existence#not the beautifully-endangered faerie-like brogue of the Gaels#not the robust unstoppable beast of the Anglos#a strange offshoot sister from days gone by who never left#but who is generally seen as unbearably common and vulgar#despite its history as both a language of law and a language of poetry

THE EX-MORNING SERIES CONCEPT
By now I think many people have heard that KristSingto’s upcoming series is an original script that was written for them. What we also have confirmed is that it was written about them.
[source]
KRIST: This series was written by P'Backaof and directed by P'Lit where they created this script from the start deliberately for the two of us and they got information for the characters etc. from KristSingto directly. In the series, the name for P'Sing is Tamtawan, and my name is Phatapi. And Tamtawan Tamtawan and Phatapi are KristSingto themselves.
INTERVIEWER: Does that mean you play yourself?
KRIST: [laughing] Yes, we act as ourselves, so it's not difficult at all.
Today, Aof elaborated on his part on Twitter:
[source: @backaof]
[translation: @_beinglistener]
And Jojo added:
[source: @jojotichakorn]
[translation: @_beinglistener]
So, two gay men are the leading creative minds behind KristSingto’s comeback series. Time to study up on your KristSingto history, kids. \:D/
Long live sanctioned RPF. 🎉
#krist perawat#singto prachaya#kristsingto#the ex morning#i’ve already seen the same tired ‘guess rent was due’ about krist and#i see on twitter when people link my thread about krist to people still insisting he’s homophobic#man’s rich#he works constantly#he even said it’s something he regrets now that his grandmother who raised him passed away#he worked so much he didn’t have as much time for his family—who he helps support#he is quite literally considered bl royalty#he has more queer people in his circle than straight#waa (gay) is his mentor#aof (gay) wrote this series and jojo (gay) thought up the concept so even professionally he's supported by queer people#you don’t have to like him#and you don’t have to admit to sending death threats to a stranger who doesn’t speak your language based on rumors you didn’t verify#just y’know#admit quietly to yourself alone in your head that you were wrong and you caused harm to a person who didn’t deserve it#plenty of actors use bl as a stepping stone to bigger jobs#he’s not one of them#he wanted to do bl for years but gmmtv told him he could only work with singto#so literally the only reason kit didn’t do bl until BMF was scheduling issues because singto wanted to study abroad#and singto couldn’t get a fixed date for it and then the pandemic messed with his plans even more#i’m glad to see more and more people are understanding who krist is recently#and even in the series they made pathapi’s controversy an impulsive act of anger#krist has said he used to struggle with being hotheaded#and one of his apologies for the igs was even something like ‘i acted without thinking of how it would look out of context’#he just wanted people to stop harassing him for his sexuality but the context isn’t in the igs#anyway my go-to when i’m too tired to talk about this is always this#if he had ever been homophobic thai people would be the ones leading the charge against him…but it’s interfans

Just FYI: It's OK if you send me messages in your native language.
I can try to translate it using an online translator!
I know how hard learning a new language is. I had to learn English as a second language too!
I only ask this: Please try to spell words correctly!
If you misspell words, the translator cannot help me. If your grammar is very casual, the translation is hard to understand.
Communication is hard. It takes effort from both people! We have to help each other if we want to communicate.
-----------
Tudo bem se você me enviar mensagens em seu idioma nativo. Posso tentar traduzir usando um tradutor online.
Eu sei como é difícil aprender um novo idioma. Eu tive que aprender inglês como segunda língua também!
Eu só peço isso: Por favor, tente soletrar as palavras corretamente! Se você errar as palavras, o tradutor não pode me ajudar. Se sua gramática for muito casual, a tradução será difícil de entender.
A comunicação é difícil. É preciso esforço de ambas as pessoas! Temos que ajudar uns aos outros se quisermos nos comunicar.
#chekhov answers#i have been getting a lot of messages I wish i could reply to#but they are all just a bit incomprehensible to someone who does not speak portuguese natively#please try to be considerate when you talk to someone who does not share your native language

K or N for Joe and/or Nicky
K. On the edge of consciousness.
Yusuf wakes slowly, so slowly that he can’t see and isn’t even sure he can open his eyes, only half-sure he still has eyes, and that’s how he knows there’s something very, very wrong. He can’t move, can’t hear, can’t even smell anything. He doesn’t remember exactly what happened to him, but every part of him is burning, and he’s fairly sure the weird aching sensation in his head is his skull knitting itself back together, which. He really, really didn’t need to know what that feels like.
There’s a scraping in his chest when he breathes in, but at least he’s breathing.
Where is he? He could be anywhere. He could be in the middle of the street, could have been dragged away from the fighting from someone who had seen him breathing through a wound that should have killed him immediately. When he wakes, what will he find? Will they have taken his weapon? How long has he been dead?
Will Nicolò be able to find him, if they are separated? Will he even try?
Slowly but steadily, he starts to hear something: a high pitched whistling that sounds like it’s coming from deep inside his own head. The darkness begins to lift, leaving flickering amber lights across his vision, and a shadow in front of him.
There’s a voice, too, one that sharpens into words as Yusuf’s hearing begins to return. He doesn’t understand their meaning, but the cadence of them and the voice itself is familiar.
“Are you awake?” Nicolò asks softly, switching to Arabic.
Yusuf tries to make a sound in response. Whether it’s audible he doesn’t know, because the only noise he can really make is a rasping exhale, but Nicolò hushes him anyway.
“Do not… you can be slow,” Nicolò says. He’s more comfortable with the sounds of the language now, but still doesn’t always string sentences together well. “We are safe. I am here.”
He’s made aware of where his hand is by the feeling of Nicolò reaching for it. Yusuf manages to make an actual sound this time, but still can’t form words. Nicolò squeezes his hand gently.
“I am here,” he says again.
Eventually, Yusuf’s skull seems to piece itself back together fully, and his vision sharpens, letting him see that they’re backed into the corner of the two remaining intact walls of a house ravaged by fire, Nicolò crouched in front of him with his sword in hand. There’s a trail of blood leading to where Yusuf is lying now, and a section of the room that has collapsed. He can piece together enough. Nicolò would have had to drag him over here.
This time, he manages to make a sound, even if he can’t quite form words. Nicolò looks down at him over his shoulder, and there is blood on his face and in his hair, and only then does Yusuf notice the bodies in the room.
“Okay?” Nicolò asks.
Yusuf manages to nod, and it sends a spike of pain along his spine. Nicolò turns slightly to look at him properly.
“You are almost done, I think,” he says. “You did not… you were asleep for a long time. I did not know if…”
“Nicolò,” Yusuf finally manages, hoarse.
“Rest,” Nicolò says. “I am here.”
(letter asks)
#neon answers#scriggle-scraggle#neon writes#the old guard#kaysanova#me personally i am obsessed with the mental image of nicolo crouching with his sword in front of yusuf while he's recovering#what happened to yusuf: wall fell on him#nicolo COULD have kept fighting but he's physically shielding him from anyone who might try to get to him while he's healing (incredibly#vulnerable) and thats well. Something to me. is this well written ? i dont know. i am feelin something abt it tho#this is like uhhhh somewhat pre relationship . the other thing is that nicolo is deliberately trying to speak arabic so its easier for yusu#bc like. as someone who tries to regularly switch between languages. i think its probably Not Easy to work in a language youre still#learning (italian) right after like. Dying with your brain barely online#thats why his senses dont go back btw. brain is healing. so thats why nicolos doing that#NOt that you all desperately needed to know that but i wanted to let you all know anyway#thank you for the prompt!!!#also i know whatever position nicolò's got his hand in to be able to hold yusuf's hand AND still face outward is super awkward but#i wanted the image and he's immortal it's fine

happy bisexual day to those who celebrate
#dragalia lost#dragalia#orion#orion dragalia#I don't usually cross reference JP translations for Dragalia stuff but I was curious if some of the Really Gay Lines in English were#the same in the original text. Turns out some of them weren't#which just makes the localization funnier#Like. Grain of salt because I don't speak Japanese and rely on machine translations and friends who speak the language#But the really sus “receiving end” line was originally just. “Haha it'd be nice to be the one getting escorted for once :)”#I'm sure it's not an entirely indulgent translation but. Phrasing!!!#then there's the infamous(?) “I seek to have a relationship with everyone here!” where in JP it's clearer that by “everyone”#Orion means “every woman” and not literally “everyone”#bc JP Elly says “In your case won't just any woman do?” while in EN she just calls him shameless LOL#there's a few more#like the scene where Orion says “You're the first man I've ever wanted to protect” and Euden says “damn bro I thought you weren't gay?”#and he responds calmly like “You really are slow when it comes to these matters! I'm just saying you're more charming than you know.”#it's a letdown but it's kinda coy#meanwhile since JP has some extra animations#namely Orion jumping in shock and making a cringing face before responding#the No Homo vibe is off the charts 😭😭😭#and then theres that xmas seasonal line that's about picking up women ...when voices are set to JP.#The EN line is about being broke. For some reason.#But even with all that it's not like there's no gay subtext in JP Orion's dialogue. It's just deeply funny how the EN localizers went#Yup. This one. Bisexual. We gotta make it more obvious.

I love how the bionic makes their overworld sprite look about 90% less pissed
That +7 "Transhumanist quite pleased" working its magic
Before the bionic eyes, their pawns just looked like they were always judging you or like something was making them especially grumpy that day (which it usually is, but that's beside the point)
After the bionics, they're still judging you they're just happy about it this time.

So are we just playing “send Shima quick doodle prompts to shake off the rust”?
In that case, you can never go wrong with toothcup
AUGH...AUGUGHHG...
I haven't drawn them in YEARS thank you for this
Also like. I know initially my idea was that human Toothless could talk regularly like everyone else. But mute Toothless who can sign is also......so good......
This is Perry's fault for poisoning my brain /j
#HTTYD#How To Train Your Dragon#Hiccup#Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III#Toothless#Toothcup#Human Toothless#I actually DO have thoughts about this.#So this AU...I guess it is an AU now--Toothless and the other dragons can shapeshift between human and dragon form#Which is like. Considered a rarity. And a privilege for dragons#The only drawbacks is that they kinda stick out...they retain a lot of their dragon-like qualities#Which makes it tricky to blend in with humans if that is the goal. But most dragons with this ability manage (if they choose to do so)#It varies from dragon to dragon ofc. But Toothless is one of the few who just CAN'T speak as a human#He's tried. But it sounds like a garbled mess lol#Some of the other dragons have a much better grasp on the human language and how to actually speak#But it's cool bc Hiccup teaches Toothless sign and that's how they communicate#NOW. The difference between Perry and Toothless is that generally Perry is very quiet. Kinda comes with the territory of being an agent#Toothless on the other hand. He's very loud. Even if he's mute#I mean yes he CAN be quiet if he wants. Night Fury duh. He's very good at stealh#*stealth#BUT if he's not focusing on being sneaky he's actually quite rambunctious lol#He may not be able to talk! But he sure does make a lot of other noises!! Most very dragon-like!!#Hiccup unconsciously mimics Toothless every now and then. It is VERY cute#Shima arts#ANYWAY I'm done rambling now lol thank you for giving me the excuse to draw them <3333#Doodles#Art#Digital art#shima-draws

More notes for Roach conlanging. Roach has grammatical gender, in which only Male, Female, and Object are grammatical genders, whereas Worker uses feminine grammar, Queen and King use a slight variant on feminine grammar, and Drone, and Queen-Alate use masculine grammar. This is because King is derived from Queen, due to their similar positions in a colony, and Queen-Alate is derived from Drone, as both are forms of alate.
Queen is an alteration of feminine grammar that functionally just adds a handful of extra syllables to it, and King is an offsprout of Queen that uses the same grammar with different pronouns. Queen-Alate, despite the name, is derived from Drone, as they are both for referring to different types of alate ant.
Most Roach dialects are intelligible to speakers of Snakemouth Den Cordyceps Roach, but Snakemouth Den Cordyceps Roach is not entirely intelligable to speakers of Roach dialects due to a mix of the excessively specialized vocabulary caused by the specific needs of its speakers, the fact that its speakers do not necessarily have Roach mouthparts and thus may not pronounce syllables in a similar way, and due to the fact that Inanimate Object is a full grammatical gender that does not exist in any other dialect of roach and replaces a decent chunk of terminology for things that previously had Other Words For Them.
#we speak#conlang#bug fables#please excuse us if we're mangling the terminology here btw. we cannot for the life of us remember the proper terms for half of this#and every time we try to google things it winds up turning up nothing#probably because we're googling shit like “the term for the thing where self reference is different if youre a guy or a girl”#and like. “part of speech that you use to refer to other people that isnt pronouns or a name that has title associations”#if we reread some textbooks we will probably remember but unfortunately these are not our textbook reference posts#they are our “what if we told you about the cool ways that we did grammar in here” post#god we love grammatical grammar (<guy who doesn't have a strong enough sense of gender to remember der and die properly)#(because we are the specific type of speaker where we're half operating based on what Feels Right with the word and we are)#(so fucking bad at remembering how gendering words is meant to go)#(the secret reason we hate phonetics is because we have to contend with both figuring out how mouthparts would work and like)#(Working Out A Reasonable Collection Of Sounds To Have In Our Language. which means we have to actually like. name things)#(cruel and unusual that we have to make actual words rather than loosely tossing building blocks on the floor. honestly.)#anyways snakemouth den roach is one of those dialects where it's on the verge of becoming a language on its own#where it's very debatable on if it's Actually A New Language or just a very specific dialect of an old one because. well. boxes#picture it as like. trying to speak to someone who you Think is speaking french but they have an extremely thick regional accent#and they keep using like ten-syllable words that you probably don't know but that seem to refer to things that could be referred to#way more concisely?#and also rather than just le and la they have added an entire new lu to the mix and you are unclear if its the accent or a new word entirel#(note: we are not a specialist on french as we primarily know it in the “we've been around it long enough to vaguely know what's being said#way and are not currently caught up enough on whatever they have going on to know about any major grammar stuff going on over there)#(but we are terrible enough with remembering the grammar of the german that we do speak that we do not trust ourself to not be Worse there)
