mordred through time (movies, tv shows, opera and musicals)
Part 5: From 2018 to 2023 (and 2024)
Other Parts: Part 1: From 1949 to 1981 -> here Part 2: From 1982 to 2002 -> here Part 3: From 2002 to 2010 -> here Part 4: From 2014 to 2017 -> here
For this last part I wanted to talk a bit about queer Mordred!
First of all, Mordred is one of the main characters who is written as LGBTQ in novels and other media. My arthurian excel list of queer arthurian characters (arthurian list of everything, in the LGBTQ sheet) is up to a few years ago, but the numbers seem to be: LGBTQ Lancelot in 16 media, Arthur in 13 media which is equal to Mordred who is also LGBTQ in 13 media (two being interpretations: White's "The once and future king" and "Fall of Camelot" fromt he Time Life books). Most of these are, of course, novels, with the first ever appearance of LGBTQ Mordred in 1956 Borowsky's novel "The Queen's knight", where Mordred is a gay man. Then in 1982 Cherryh's "Port Eternity" has asexual Mordred, even if the characters could be debated on how arthurian they are. We then jump to 1997 with the short story "The Pretender" by Stephen Dedman, with mlm Mordred.
2005 "A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur's Court" by Mari Mancusi (gay Mordred) 2006 "Mordred bastard son" by Douglas Clegg (gay Mordred) 2008 "The Silurian series" by Wilson (gay Mordred) 2012 "The Prince and the Program" by Mercer (bisexual Mordred) 2014 "Mordred and the king" by Curlovich (gay Mordred)
In movies, shows and musicals instead we could consider 2008 musical Mordred the first iteration of queer Mordred (part 3). This is of course an interpretation and it might probably just be a case of queer-coding of villains that reminds of Disney movies. Still, there is no doubt Bobby Steggert, who is an out gay actor (at the time, now he is a therapist) played an obvious queer coded Mordred.
It is only in 2014 that we have an explicit LGBTQ Mordred with "High Noon over Camelot" which also for the first time ever introduces Mordred as a trans man. From 2017 we also get introduced to Fate's Mordred (Fate/Aprocrypha and subsequient movies and stage shows) whose gender has always been a debated topic. I already talked about it in part 4, but Mordred in Fate is definitely written as a non binary character. In 2018 the webseries "The Campaign for Camelot" has Mordred as a protagonist and mlm, with a romance as well (another male character in the show). The last time we saw Mordred with a romance was back in the 60s, in the movie "Sword of Lancelot"!
I think the most interesting thing is that Mordred is without a doubt the character who is the most interpreted as LGBTQ in movies and tv shows. From memory, the only other characters are Morgana (in the Netflix's "Cursed", webseries "Legend" and "The Campaign for Camelot"), Lancelot (in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "High Noon over Camelot" and "Spamalot"), Galahad (in Josh Ritter's song "Galahad"), Arthur ("High noon over Camelot") and Merlin (webseries "Legend").
2018 Arthur et les enfants de la Table Ronde: This is a two-seasons French animated show that narrates the adventures of Arthur, an orphan kid living in Uther's kingdom. The show has other arthurian characters as kids (Guinevere, Gawain, Sagramore, Morgana) and Mordred himself is also a kid. Morgause and Igraine (Morgana's sisters) are the main villain and Mordred (their cousin) is also a villain. The voice from the clip is from the Italian dub but the original French voice actor was Ricardo Richter.
2018 The Campaign for Camelot (webseries): This websites (you can watch it here) is a complete 78 short episodes series where different modern arthurian characters decide to run for the school board against Arthur's wishes. Mordred is one of the main protagonists and he is introduced in episode 7. Over the series he also develops a romance with Izzy (Iddawg, from “The Dream of Rhonabwy”). To clarify, in the clip Mordred is the guy without the glasses and the darker shirt! And he is played by Dylan Martin.
2018/2019 OSK's Knights of the Round Table musical: This clip is from a recording but a dvd also exists. OSK is a Japanese theater company of all women. Mordred was interpreted by Momo Mika. The story of the musical follows the classical Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot triangle with Mordred appearing (as Arthur's son) in the second part of the story.
2020 Arthur and Merlin: Knights of Camelot: A much less exciting movie than I expected, focusing on Arthur trying to reclaim Camelot after Mordred betrays him. Mordred (played by Joel Phillimore) plays Arthur's son and the villain of the story. He often uses threats of sexual violence towards Guinevere.
2020 Fate/Grand Order the movie: Camelot: Another installment in the Fate series. This movie is set in the Grand Order timeline (different from Apocrypha), but Mordred is still a very similar character and they are still voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. The original title is Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot 1 - Wandering; Agateram as in 2020 only part 1 released. Part 2 is called Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot - Paladin; Agateram and was released in 2021. Basically part one is Wandering Agateram and part two is Paladin Agateram. Different from other Fate series, this one is set in the past (in 1273 A.D.).
2021 Fate/Grand Order: The Grand Temple of Time: Another movie based on the videogame Fate/Grand Order... please do not ask me the plot, I just know Mordred is not as present here as in the previous movie or as in Fate/Apocrypha.
2021 Le Roi Arthus opera: This is a 1895 opera written by Ernest Chausson and sung in French. I already talked about it before, just know this is the most recent iteration of it and the only video we have of the opera performed in arthurian clothes (the previous filmed performance was a modernization). Mordred was played by baritone Justin Austin.
2023 Camelot Revival: The return of the musical Camelot! There are a few bootlegs around (at least 4 of them) if you want to watch it, but I am not allowed to share them. Still, I got them from asking a gift on the reddit BootlegsGifts. As I still have to watch it I cannot comment on any possible difference here, just know this version was extremely successful. Mordred is played by Taylor Trensch, and Hawley Gould was his understudy (not in audio).

William Gottlieb     Sarah Vaughan Performing at Café Society, West Village, New York City     1946
Barney Josephson opened Café Society at Sheridan Square in the West Village in 1938.  When he opened the club, a small, basement room, he wanted it to be fully integrated, both on stage and in the audience.  In 1938, that was unheard of in the United States, even in as cosmopolitan and sophisticated a city as New York.  Josephson had gotten the idea while visiting Paris and seeing the integrated jazz clubs that were flourishing there.  He chose the name “Café Society” to mock the snooty Clare Booth Luce, who wrote puff pieces about the habitués of the upscale nightclubs uptown, which she called “cafe society.”  Josephson’s slogan for Café Society was “The Wrong Place to the Right People.”  He booked many of the great jazz and blues acts of his era, as well as comedians, and he ensured that black customers were as welcome as whites.  Among the acts featured at Café Society were Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Big Joe Turner, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Josh White, Teddy Wilson, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Hazel Scott, May Lou Williams, Count Basie, Lester Young, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy and many others.  It was at Café Society that Abel Meeropol showed his poem abut the lynching of Black people, “Strange Fruit,” to Josephson, who had him show it to Billie Holiday.  It became a part of her set for the rest of her life.  Josephson insisted she use the song as the last piece of her set, so people would be left thinking about its powerful lyrics.  The club also was a performance place for comedians, most of whom were leftists and did political humor, like Jack Gilford, Zero Mostel, Imogene Coca and a troupe called “The Revuers” that featured Betty Comden, Adolph Green and a young Judy Tuvim, soon to become known as Judy Holliday.
In 1947, the anti-communist witch hunt was in full swing.  The progressive politics of Café Society, its integrated scene and the artists who worked there all came to the attention of the House Un-American Activities Committee.  Barney Josephson’s brother, Leon, one of the founders of Café Society although not actively involved in running it, was a long time member of the Communist Party as well as being the attorney for his brother and the club, was summonsed to appear before HUAC.  He was an unfriendly witness, who refused to name names or to answer questions.  He was convicted of Contempt of Congress and spent a year in jail.  After his conviction, reactionary columnists like Walter Winchell began attacking Barney Josephson and Café Society as a notorious nest of communists.  Customers rapidly fell away and within a year, Barney Jospehson had to close the club.
Most of the artists who performed there remembered there remembered Café Society fondly.   John Chilton, author of “Billie’s Blues,” wrote, “Café Society was probably the happiest booking of Billie’s life. It did wonders for her confidence onstage, enabling her to project a more sophisticated act. Barney Josephson encouraged and advised Billie; later he was to do the same thing for Lena Horne.”  Horne said Café Society was “the sweetest job I ever got in my life.”

canon starter call - open to anyone !
i have a strong urge to write some canon muses, so if you would be interested in writing against any of the canon muses listed under the READ MORE below, please comment/IM me and i can send a starter your way or reply to one of your starters.

Ms. Marvel: How the Science Fair issue explores themes of class and race
As intentionally fun and silly the science fair issue from G. Willow Wilson’s run on Ms. Marvel is, I do love how this issue touches upon themes of racial and classist discrimination within the U.S. educational system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like all other areas of America's privatized capitalistic society, the system is intentionally rigged to make it as hard as possible for POCs like Kamala & Miles and even lower-income white people like Bruno to have access to good college educations. This in-turn can sadly sometimes promote unhealthy competition and in-fighting between these minority groups, as we see between Kamala Khan & Miles Morales’ respective teams at the science fair.
Tumblr media
Wilson also conveys these issues of systemic class disparity through the character of Josh Richardson, who’s upper-class white male privilege makes him oblivious of his partner’s Kamala & Bruno, who need scholarships in order to more easily get into good colleges and deal with student loan debt afterwards, whereas Josh presumably has wealthier parents to fall back on. Heck, Josh even later admits that he only joined their team simply just to impress his ex-girlfriend Zoe, just to further highlight the ignorance and entitlement that white privilege generates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This actually reminded me of a historical monograph that I read for one of my Graduate School classes last year, White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion in Dallas, 1841-2001, which discusses the ways in which the politicians and businessmen of Dallas, TX actively sowed seeds of racial division and class conflict between the city's various minority groups throughout the city's history.
Tumblr media
It's such a neat coincidence that both my academic work and comic reading touched on similar themes back-to-back! Also, while a bit on the nose, I love how Ganke's words here also foreshadow the then-upcoming conflict in Ms. Marvel’s Civil War II tie-ins, wherein Kamala is divided between the opposing factions of two of her superhero mentors, Captain Marvel & Iron Man respectively!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, a really fun AND poignant done-&-one issue of Ms. Marvel! Plus it introduced us all to the epic gloriousness that is “Sky Shark!” Man do I love how unapologetically goofy superhero comics can be!

I love exploring the possibility that my favorite characters have dark sides which would make them the most dangerous ones in their respective shows.
*Dark/Evil Jubal Valentine- The Assistant Special Agent in Charge and second-in-command of the FBI's New York Office, Jubal is also a recovering alcoholic who's haunted by his past. I think that behind the seemingly easy-going nature is a man who should not be underestimated and who has a hidden dark side. I often think of what could have been if Jubal had never gone into law enforcement as Dark/Evil Jubal could manipulate people into working for him and even become a much bigger threat than all the criminals the three teams go up against.
*Dark/Evil James Wilson- Head of the Oncology Department at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, he's also the best friend of Dr. Gregory House although in my opinion, they're actually lovers. Dark/Evil Wilson could easily seduce his targets and then destroy their lives, even going on to become the most dangerous individual in the entire House MD universe. Wilson would also be capable of corrupting House and the two men would become an unstoppable criminal team.
*Dark/Evil Rodney McKay- Chief Science Officer of the Atlantis Expedition and a member of the Expedition's flagship team, AR-1, Rodney is the one the Expedition usually expect to save the day but what pisses me off is the fact that on the TV show, he was also used as a punching bag. Dark/Evil Rodney could use his knowledge to easily take over Atlantis and the entire Pegasus Galaxy with John Sheppard his lover/slave.
*Dark/Evil Daniel Jackson- A member of Stargate Command's flagship team, SG-1, Daniel is a man who has always had that potential dark side, one that if unleashed could make him an unbeatable opponent with us even getting to see it during the Stargate SG-1 Season 4 episode, "Absolute Power". He could use his own knowledge to conquer the SGC and take over the Earth as well as the Milky Way galaxy with Jack O'Neill and Cameron Mitchell as his lovers while the rest of his SG-1 teammates are his slaves.
*Dark/Evil Josh Lyman- The White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Jed Bartlet and later the Chief of Staff for Matthew Santos, Josh is yet another favorite character of mine whose potential for darkness is strong. Dark/Evil Josh would be a huge threat in the West Wing universe to such an extent I don't think anyone would realize it until it was too late. Dark/Evil Josh would have Donna Moss and Sam Seaborne as his lovers with everyone else working for him.

My Issue with the Concept of Casting Actors Who Look Like the Book Characters & Why Peeta Doesn’t Have to be Blonde and Blue-eyed to Do It for Me
I’ve never understood why it’s so important to some fans that the actors have the exact same hair color and eye color as the book characters.
I thought this issue was long solved in the THG fandom because Suzanne Collins herself was so against this idea she responded to the controversy surrounding Peeta’s casting by saying, “If Josh had been bright purple and had six foot wings and gave that audition, I’d have been like ‘Cast him!’ ‘We can word around the wings!’ He was that good.” Does it sound like she cares about an actor’s eye color, hair color, height, or even skin color?
I’m very much against adapting the original trilogy again so soon after the movies, but if it happens, I wouldn’t even mind if they cast a good Black or Asian actor as Peeta. As long as he can act and embody Peeta, he will be good for the role and I’ll support him.
Peeta’s essence as a character is not in his hair color or height. He’s Peeta because he’s genuinely kind, gentle, and canny when he needs to be. I don’t think he needs to be blonde and blue-eyed and taller than Katniss to be all of those things. Do you?
My two favorite literary characters ever are Peeta and Will Parry from His Dark Materials. It just happens that both were played by brilliant actors who got so much shit for not looking like how the fans pictured the characters to be. I’m so fed up. His Dark Materials fandom is generally not that racist compared to some huge fandoms (which isn’t to say a lot), yet some people still acted insane when they cast Amir Wilson as Will just because they always pictured Will as White, even when it was never actually specified in the books. Will has straight black eyebrows and fierce-looking eyes. That’s the extent of his physical description in the books. And people had the nerve to act offended when they cast an actor that fits that description word-for-word, just because he’s Black.
And it pissed me off so much that there are still people asking for Alex Pettyfer and Alexander Ludwig as Peeta because they’re both blonde and tall.
First of all, Peeta was never tall. He’s medium height and stocky. Those two guys don’t fit Peeta’s description as well as some people seem to think. I wonder if some of them are just projecting the traditional standards for male attractiveness on Peeta, which is ironic because Peeta is the opposite of those things, that’s part of the beauty of his character.
Second of all, casting for movies is not like picking cosplay models. Maybe consider the possibility that acting skills are more important than hair color??? I’m not going to rant about this again because Suzanne already did it. I’ll just say Alex Pettyfer or Alexander Ludwig would never give a performance as brilliant as Josh Hutcherson did in any of the movies. I know some people have a hard time telling bad acting from good acting, but I don’t, I can totally tell when an actor is good or bad, or mid. And Josh was brilliant as Peeta. I seriously don’t think there could’ve been another actor out-acting him in this role to this day, but I look forward to being surprised if they ever do another adaptation.
