The final scene of Saladin Ahmed’s Magnificent Ms. Marvel run:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It’s a stupid dance. I shouldn’t care about missing it. But I care. Too much. I always care too much. And it’s led me to make some big mistakes. But one thing I’ve learned... caring this much doesn’t make you stupid. It doesn’t make you weaker. In fact... it’s magnificent.”

I always FREAKING adored this scene from the comics! It gave me similar vibes as to when Aunt May revealed that she had always known that Peter Parker is Spider-Man before she tragically passed away in Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #400 during The Clone Saga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gucci version 💜💜💜:
Tumblr media
Wallmart version 🤡:
(this was so lame please. if nakia ever becomes a villain in the comics ill totally understand why lmao)

canon starter call - open to anyone !
i have a strong urge to write some canon muses, so if you would be interested in writing against any of the canon muses listed under the READ MORE below, please comment/IM me and i can send a starter your way or reply to one of your starters.
i do not require you to know anything about my muse's canon, but i'm more than happy to tell you about it if you ask. i'd be happy to write canon muses against your ocs! also, mixing fandoms is 100% ok with me unless your canon muse is problematic and makes me uncomfy. my canon muses do not have all their memories or relationships from their life unless we plot it, but they will have the same general personality/ambitions.
if you are willing to write against my canon muses but don't care which, just like this post, and i'll take a look at your open starters and/or send you a closed starter at random with a muse i think fits the vibe.
*please don't agree to write against my canon muses if you're one of those picky weirdos that will be up in arms if i don't write a cannon muse exactly how you would.
( if you'd prefer to write against an oc muse only, check this post. )
canon muses i'd like to write: bold = extra big muse rn. strikethrough = exclusive, so not rn.

Might I just say, "Disobedient" is radio quality. Fucking CHILLS. Sadie and Amethyst's voices go so well together in a rock setting, and Sadie's sarcastic "thank you for gracing me with your presence" at the beginning DAMN. Not to mention Amethyst's little solo at the end, just...perfection! It's fucking good.

Forrest and Delia may be my favourite characters. :)
-
-
-
-
(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished season 1 of ‘The Unicorn’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)
-
-
-
-
-
This episode felt like a dip....compared to the previous one.....
...good thing there was Delia’s multiple punchline arc that kept this from getting below a 5. I really thought she was walking off for good and was surprised that she came back with healthy snacks (of course she would...right?)
--------
HIGHLIGHT:
EXT. SNACK BAR - DAY
DELIA finishes tying her apron and turns to FORREST.
DELIA I can do this, right?
FORREST surveys their challenge. Everything is ready for service.
FORREST (distracted) Yeah.
DELIA 'Cause I'm not just a pediatrician who's just selling poison to small children.
She looks at the 'snacks' on sale.
FORREST So what?
DELIA sighs.
Their first customer approaches.
FORREST All right.
They both smile brightly at him and FORREST claps his hands.
ORRIN Hi. Uh, could I get an orange soda, please?
FORREST Great.
He rushes to one of the coolers
DELIA You don't have anything smaller?
FORREST Orange soda. Coming right up.
DELIA Okay. I'll get the change. Uh...
FORREST continues digging under the ice.
FORREST Orange soda. Wrong cooler. Very cold in there.
He slams it closed and moves on to another one.
DELIA (to Forrest) How much is it? Do we even know? (to Orrin) Do you know?
ORRIN shakes his head.
DELIA You don't know. Okay. (to herself) 75 cents? Geez, who sets this?
FORREST One cola. We've got two colas. This one's all colas.
He gives up.
DELIA All right. I think this is...
She puts together ORRIN's change and hands it to him.
FORREST Uh---ah.
He grabs the display soda and gives it to ORRIN.
FORREST There you go. I don't even know what I did with the original ten.
FORREST laughs.
ORRIN Thank you?
ORRIN walks away in a daze.
DELIA closes the money box. FORREST turns to his wife.
FORREST We got this.
DELIA (zero confidence) Yeah.
EXT. SNACK BAR - LATER
FORREST and DELIA are inundated with customers.
DELIA (to the crowd) One at a time. (to Forrest) Forrest, nachos!
FORREST Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm on it. I'm on it.
He hands a kid her purchase and starts preparing an order of nachos.
FORREST Nachos. Nachos.
DELIA (to the kids waiting) Who opened this?
He knocks over the bag of corn chips.
FORREST Chips down. Chips down.
Unfortunately, he has positioned the nachos further to risk bad aim. Sure enough after he pumps out the yellow ooze...some lands on his hand.
FORREST Oh! So, hot. So, so hot.
He hops and hands them to DELIA.
DELIA (to kid) Enjoy your hydrogenated palm oil.
DELIA rolls her eyes as she hands the nachoes over to its owner.
GIRL Thanks.
WADE Uh, hey, can I please get a water and fast?
DELIA Okay. Comming right up.
She turns behind her
DELIA Forrest, water!
FORREST I'm only one man!
DELIA gets a box for another order and walks over to the cooler with the corn dogs. Wade follows her, shimmying around the other kids waiting to be served.
WADE Uh, oh, excuse me. Ah...
DELIA Hey. How's Grace?
WADE Uh, honestly, I'm a little worried. I mean, you know her. She's always been a little shy. But Jill knew how to push her. And I-I-I just don't know how.
DELIA Tell her she can quit.
WADE Wha---no. That's the last thing Jill would want.
DELIA glances at FORREST. We don't see what he's up to...but lets assume all hell has broken lose.
WADE To let Grace walk away because some mean girl made fun of her?
DELIA No. no. no.
She holds up one of the corn dogs like a pointer finger.
DELIA I'm not saying she should quit. I'm saying give her a choice.
In the background everything has come to a halt. FORREST is looking for something.
DELIA Like when a kid comes to my office and they freak out just before I give them a shot---
FORREST Delia, do we have Twizzlers?
DELIA I don't know!
She turns back to WADE
DELIA So, I tell the kids: 'You don't have to get the shot. It's up to you.' I let 'em think its their choice. You see? 99% of the time, they step up and take the needle.
WADE That's worth a shot. What about the kids who don't?
She slams the cooler closed.
DELIA Oh, I just have the parents sit on 'em and then I just jab 'em.
She returns to her station.
WADE Okay, well-well hopefully it won't come to that.
DELIA Forrest, water!
FORREST Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
He rushes over to one of the coolers.
FORREST Yeah, got it. Got it. God, so cold. So cold.
He hands over the bottle to WADE.
FORREST I can't feel this hand.
He waves his right hand (which is stuck in a 'bottle holding' position) at WADE.
FORREST I can't. Look.
He bites his hand a couple of times.
FORREST Nothing.
WADE Good luck.
FORREST Nothing.
WADE runs off.
WADE Good luck.
DELIA Oh, look who cut the line. If it isn't my favourite patient, Colton. What can I get you, hon?
COLTON I'll have a caramel corn and two things of the Sour Bombz.
Behind her, FORREST struggles opening a jar.
DELIA What are you doing? Huh? You know you've got high triglycerides.
COLTON No, I don't!
She slams the money box closed.
DELIA Yes, you do! I am your doctor---
She turns to FORREST.
DELIA You know what?
She starts untying her apron.
DELIA I cannot, I cannot do this.
The apron comes off.
DELIA I won't and I can't.
FORREST What? What are you doing? Where are you going?
DELIA I'm going somewhere where I don't have to violate...
She slings her bag over her shoulder and walks off.
DELIA ...the Hippocratic Oath.
FORREST Well, honey, honey.
She continues walking away and waves him off.
FORRST Hon, do, do-do you know when you'll be back? Delia! Deeeeeliaaaaaaa!
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - NIGHT
WADE waits at the backstage entrance for his daughter holding flowers.
GRACE comes through the door.
WADE Oh, hey.
GRACE It was okay?
WADE Uh, it was, uh...
He tries to find the right words.
WADE ...it was incredible. You were incredible.
GRACE smiles as her eyes well up.
WADE Your mom would've been so proud of you.
She nods and they share a moment.
WADE Uh, these are for you.
He presents the flowers.
WADE For you.
GRACE Thanks.
She admires them.
GRACE Um. Hey, everyone who worked on the show is gonna go across the street to get frozen cookie dough. Is that okay?
DELIA and FORREST approach, but stay at a distance.
WADE Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I mean, I built the sets and I love cookie dough, so let's---let's go.
He moves towards the group but she blocks him.
GRACE No. Dad.
WADE Go. Go on. Go have fun with your friends.
GRACE walks over to her friends.
WADE Great job. Go.
The group greet her arrival with cheers and applause. WADE, DELIA, and FORREST applaud along with them.
GRACE looks back for a moment smiling.
WADE (mouths) I love you.
The group start walking off.
DELIA Wow. I'm sorry, I'm trying so hard to go along with this, but...
She looks from WADE to the kids.
DELIA ...raw cookie dough?
FORREST Okay.
DELIA Oh. They're all gonna get salmonella.
FORREST gently leads his wife towards the opposite side of her worry.
FORREST Yeah, no, no. Come on. Let's just go.
DELIA All of them!
FORREST Yeah, let's get out of here.
She starts walking off.
FORREST Yeah, okay, okay, all right.
WADE I mean, it's a place that sells only raw cookie dough, so you think they're probably figured that out.
He lays a calming hand on DELIA's shoulder.
DELIA How is that even legal?

Ms. Marvel: How the Science Fair issue explores themes of class and race
As intentionally fun and silly the science fair issue from G. Willow Wilson’s run on Ms. Marvel is, I do love how this issue touches upon themes of racial and classist discrimination within the U.S. educational system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like all other areas of America's privatized capitalistic society, the system is intentionally rigged to make it as hard as possible for POCs like Kamala & Miles and even lower-income white people like Bruno to have access to good college educations. This in-turn can sadly sometimes promote unhealthy competition and in-fighting between these minority groups, as we see between Kamala Khan & Miles Morales’ respective teams at the science fair.
Tumblr media
Wilson also conveys these issues of systemic class disparity through the character of Josh Richardson, who’s upper-class white male privilege makes him oblivious of his partner’s Kamala & Bruno, who need scholarships in order to more easily get into good colleges and deal with student loan debt afterwards, whereas Josh presumably has wealthier parents to fall back on. Heck, Josh even later admits that he only joined their team simply just to impress his ex-girlfriend Zoe, just to further highlight the ignorance and entitlement that white privilege generates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This actually reminded me of a historical monograph that I read for one of my Graduate School classes last year, White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion in Dallas, 1841-2001, which discusses the ways in which the politicians and businessmen of Dallas, TX actively sowed seeds of racial division and class conflict between the city's various minority groups throughout the city's history.
Tumblr media
It's such a neat coincidence that both my academic work and comic reading touched on similar themes back-to-back! Also, while a bit on the nose, I love how Ganke's words here also foreshadow the then-upcoming conflict in Ms. Marvel’s Civil War II tie-ins, wherein Kamala is divided between the opposing factions of two of her superhero mentors, Captain Marvel & Iron Man respectively!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, a really fun AND poignant done-&-one issue of Ms. Marvel! Plus it introduced us all to the epic gloriousness that is “Sky Shark!” Man do I love how unapologetically goofy superhero comics can be!

New fall shows
So there were a number of TV festivals and events here in New York over the last few weeks and I wound up seeing the pilots of a number of the new shows (like 13 of them).  So, with the US TV season starting next week, here's what I thought of what I saw.
ABC:
Emergence is really well acted.  Allison Tolman plays a Long Island police chief who finds a young girl (Alexa Skye Swinton) as the sole survivor of a plane crash.  When odd government forces – official and unofficial – try to take custody of the girl, Tolman, her father (Clancy Brown), ex-husband (Donald Faison) and their daughter (Ashley Aufderheide) all fight to protect the girl.   While the acting is great, there is a "plot twist" at the end that has me thinking if they're doing this in the pilot, what are they doing next week?  May give it a second episode but like Manifest, I'm worried about where this is going.
Stumptown is great.  Cobie Smulders plays Dex Parios, an Afghanistan War vet with issues.  She lives in her hometown Portland with her developmentally disabled brother in their childhood home.  She has a best friend, a dead fiancé with a powerful family, a running joke of a car and some PTSD issues.  There's nothing new here except it is a woman with issues trying to make her way in the P.I. business instead of a man but it is really well done.  The supporting cast is strong with Jake Johnson, Michael Ealy, Camryn Manheim, Cole Sibus and Tantoo Cardinal.
CBS:
Bob Hearts Abishola is the typical Chuck Lorre comedy where there is a little heart and some fart jokes.  Folake Olowofoyeku is terrific as Abishola.   You'll learn more about socks than the average sock wearer probably needs but hey – learning is good.
Evil sort of taped into all my good X-Files feelings.  He's a believer, she's based in science, they team up to find the truth.  I'm there.  It does not hurt that Mike Colter is the believer.  Katja Herbers is really strong in the non-believer role.  The two work with Aasif Mandvi and against Michael Emerson.  Christine Lathi shows up the mom of Herbers's character, Kurt Fuller from Supernatural is there as Herbers's shrink.  Concerns about what they're doing next week are there but the way the case was resolved makes me think the producers are not picking sides (in The X-Files, Mulder was always right).
The Unicorn took Walton Goggins, who was a villain in not one but two of my favorite programs - The Shield and Justified - and made him into a charming, likable leading man.  Goggins’s character is a widower, a year after his wife’s death, doing his best to run his gardening business and raise his two teenage daughters.  He has help from two couples who are longtime family friends who want Goggins’s character to start living for himself.  It sounds like another dead wife show but it has real depth.  It also has a great cast around Goggins with Rob Corddry and Michaela Watkins as one of the couples.  Omar Benson Miller and Maya Lynne Robinson are the other couple (and Robinson is great).  Since I lost LIfe in Pieces, I’m giving this one a spin.
CW:
Batwoman fits right in with the whole Arrowverse world.  Ruby Rose as Kate Kane is a stunning screen presence.  Demands attention in every scene even when she's just standing in the background.  Dougray Scott plays Kate's father.  There are family conflicts, crime in Gotham, missing family members and the Batman vibe without the Caped Crusader actually appearing.  I've been out of the Arrowverse for a while – the time travel baby Sarah is now baby JJ stuff had me check out – but this is a good way to return.
Katy Keane is the anti-Riverdale in a really great way.  Sunny, happy, positive – this is a "making it in the big city" (with the big city being a real place – New York) story for four young folks interested in fashion (Katy), singing (Josie from Josie & the Pussycats), performing (Jorge/Ginger) and sports (K.O.).  There are ups and downs for everyone with rivals all around but these are characters that are easy to root for.  This show isn't targeted at me as I am old but it is really cute.
Nancy Drew is Riverdale 2.0 in a not so great way.  Dour, depressing and physically dark – the program is about yet another dead young woman and the town full of secrets.   Been there, seen this going back to the original Twin Peaks.
FOX:
I don't know who thought Almost Family was a good idea but I did not one.  Brittnay Snow is the daughter of world-renowned fertility doctor Timothy Hutton.  As Hutton's character is getting a lifetime achievement award, a reporter asks about fraud at his clinic.  Seems Hutton was providing more than just medical treatment at the clinic – he was providing biological material.   Some of this is played for laughs, some of it played as jealousy between friends.  It is just tone-deaf about what a violation this is (and an early season Law & Order episode).  They push how great it is only child Brittnay Snow has all these siblings!  Not good.
Prodigal Son has serial killer Michael Sheen helping his FBI Profiler son Tom Payne solve crimes.  Lou Diamond Phillips shows up.  I'm in as this is my type of show.
NBC:
Bluff City Law has Jimmy Smits as a civil rights/victim rights lawyer in Memphis whose estranged daughter Catlin McGee works for big corporations.  After a family tragedy, the two team up in Smits law firm.  Based on the pilot, it looks like there is a case of the week (high school gardener dying of cancer after using certain pesticides) and what looks like a season long case (high school teacher serving life for killing a student who he didn't actually kill).  The performances are fine but this seems likes season one of Bull where every client is innocent/a victim of a big corporation/super sympathetic and our heroes will always find a way to get them justice even if it means bending the rules.   Nothing new but nice to see Jimmy Smits again.
Perfect Harmony and Sunnyside have the same basic set up.  A person in a position of importance (Bradley Whitford as a Princeton music professor; Kal Penn as a New York city council member) suffer professional fall (Whitford is a prick who threw a chair at a student; Penn is a prick who tried to bribe a cops after at DUI).  Wallowing in failure, person accidentally comes across a plucky group who all are working toward a goal (Whitford finds a choir; Penn has a group of green card holders trying to be citizens).  While still being mostly awful, person finds some heart working with the rag tag group.  There are differences – Whitford's character just lost his wife to cancer and is in competition with John Carroll Lynch's choir, Penn's character lives with his sister, a doctor.  But they're the same show.

THE UNICORN (ordered to series)
A widower is eager to move on from the most difficult year of his life, only to realize he’s utterly unprepared to raise his two daughters on his own and equally unprepared for the dating world — where, to his shock, he’s suddenly a hot commodity.
Cast (thus far)
Walton Goggins (Vice Principal) as Wade, a devoted father to two adolescent girls, is a big-hearted open-book of a guy, but without his wife, he’s finding himself at sea. When his friends persuade him to start dating again, he discovers to his shock that he’s kind of a hot commodity — if only he knew what the heck he was doing. (Mar 5)
Rob Corddry (Children’s Hospital) as Forrest, one of Wade’s good friends and husband to the very opinionated, blunt and controlling Delia. Forrest is tightly wound and a cerebral guy determined to look like a cool guy. He encourages Wade to start dating again to help his friend find happiness, but may also be living a little vicariously through Wade’s foray into the world of online dating. (Mar 25)
Michaela Watkins (Casual) as Delia, who takes the helm when Wade starts looking to date again, although sometimes that means activating her husband Forrest to do the dirty work. Appalled at the entropy that has set in at the house since Wade’s wife died, she thinks it’s important to come up with a concrete plan of action. (Mar 25)
Omar Benson Miller (Ballers) as Ben, another of Wade’s well-meaning friends who is married to Michelle with four children. Ben is convinced Wade is “going to crush it out there” in the dating world and is pumped to think that his friend is finally taking the big step. (Mar 26)
Maya Lynne Robinson (The Conners) as Michelle, “the anti-Delia,” a super laid-back mother to four kids who kind of have to fend for themselves. Keenly aware that women are already throwing themselves at Wade, Michelle is openly impatient with Wade when he waffles about trying dating for real. (Mar 26)
Ruby Jay (Holly Hobbie) and Makenzie Moss (Steve Jobs) as Wade’s daughters, Grace and Natalie respectively. (May 9)

Trama
