Hii there, Can i offer to you my art comms..
I prefer to commission only friends/mutual or artists where I know and love their art. so i will have to decline your offer. I hope you have a nice day regardless
#I was contemplating whether to respond to this privately but I think it is something you all might need to see#I've been getting a few people dm'ing me about offering commissions to me#while it is all well and good I do prefer finding the commissions myself in my own time#and as said in this reply I do tend to actually want to know who I'm commissioning before I do so#which is why I tend to commission mutuals or artist I know and love#so please do me the favour of not sending me these messages#I will message YOU if I am interested in a commission#thank you for reading and have a nice day everybody#replies#also pro tip - sending me these messages often trigger the part of my brain that don't want to do what it's told#so sending me messages like these makes me want to commission you less#just so you know :3

Sooo, like I noticed something.
Ivan's Anakt Garden uniform seems to have a different design than all the other children there. Like his top has a collar on it, which I kind of find ironic since he doesn't even wear a collar (because he's a "good boy" they said). But anyways
The thing is, it goes same for Luka, while slightly similar to the standard Anakt Garden uniform (?), his has a slightly different design on the collar part, yet he's also wearing a collar.
So what's the deal with that, like, if it's based of behavior (y'know being a good pet and all) how come Sua doesn't also have a unique uniform? Or is it a way to Spoil Ivan because of good behavior by his owner, then how come Mizi doesn't also have one(we know she and her owner are on okay kind of terms)
I don't know, just kinda sus in a way.
I just really find it ironic how Ivan's uniform has a collar, whilst he doesn't even wear a collar like all the other children. Like sure, he doesn't wear the collar because of his 'goodboy behavior', yet somehow,
that collar part of his uniform, like somehow symbolizes that while he might not wear that collar like everyone else, he was still not entirely free.
I don't maybe I'm just feeling silly and delusional ahahaha (though I'm not entirely sure if there's a canon explanation for it, is there? Let me know muah muah)
The timing of this ask is impeccable actually I was in the middle of drawing my whole Anakt uniform thing and when I saw this pop up in my inbox I thought to myself: Huh!
Regarding the uniforms: overall, I don't think they're modified for any specific purposes, Ivan and Luka's uniforms are just special because, well, they're special, you know? When your Guardian has money and they really invest in you, it's not too hard for them to switch up your outfit a bit. Just to help you form an image. Maybe even coo at you a little bit and tell you how handsome you look. You know, embarassing shit.
That last paragraph though, wow. There's a lot of ways you can interpret Ivan's "collar". Ivan's shirt collar still technically being a collar, even though he's been gifted privilege (the illusion of free will, exceptionality) at the end of the day he will always remain a pet. I do think that's part of it. After all, how unsightly it would be to see a pet with a bare neck? Wild animal, unable to be restrained, uncivilized, a threat.
Ivan is well-behaved, but his place as a pet must be constantly be made clear, even if the humans may not recognize it that way. In this paradisiacal prison a collar is a collar, whether it fabric or metal. In a way, it seems almost belittling, almost mocking.
No wonder Till's outfits so often consist of wide, open necklines. It must be suffocating to be so restricted.
Moving forward, Sua's uniform is unaltered because although she has a wealthy guardian, they unfortunately don't care much about her. Definitely not enough to give her a special uniform. She's not the type to outwardly want for much, anyway. She's conditioned to wear whatever she's given. She has more pressing matters to worry about.
Mizi's outfit is unaltered too, but for a different reason. Mizi is most likely just satisfied with what she has already. The uniform isn't far from the dress she wore on her way to the Garden, and she's already been established to be a rather free-flowing person. Although her Guardian is more than capable of providing for her wishes and preferences, Mizi doesn't seem to mind simplicity at all. She's just happy to be here!
Anyway, back to Ivan. He forgoes his collar because of his good boy behavior, yes. While the high shirt collar could symbolize the aforementioned false trust, it's also quite in line with Ivan's personal style! He's usually seen with his neck covered, after all. It seems like his trademark. Ivan played himself as more of the mature reserved type (save for whenever he's around Till, apparently), so it makes sense for his owner to commission a uniform that further reinforces this proper and responsible persona. Or maybe it was Anakt Garden that directly issued that uniform to him, who knows. Either way, the uniform makes him stand out and immediately sends the message that he's a special pet.
(Fun fact! Many of Ivan's important outfits center around this theme of uniform, his performance outfit in ROUND 3 literally inspired by the key word uniform.)
I believe Luka's uniform is different because his guardian thought it would be cute. HAHA sorry. no but like genuinely. His collar is quite cutesy and fancy, lines up with Luka's overall trademark aesthetic of white frills and ribbons. Even his sleeves are puffed, like a posh little prince! I can't see a practical explanation for these, they seem purely decorative. And it checks out, because of course someone as influential and desperately prideful as Guardian Heperu would want to make his pet the specialest little boy in the Garden.
On a more serious note, though, I think it further hammers down just how much of a doll Luka is. Sua is described as a doll in her own right, but the difference is that her guardian only cares about her when the cameras are on. Guardian Heperu has his eyes on Luka almost 24/7, attending to his needs for success, ensuring that Luka must remain exceptional. I guess the outfit really helps get across that "little prince" kind of vibe.
There's a chance that the thicker, puffier sleeves of Luka's uniform help him stay warm? I'm not exactly sure about the other ways his heart condition can affect his body, but since he has several health issues I'd assume he has trouble regulating body temperature. And the shoes, isn't that one interesting addition? Luka is the only character sporting footwear in the Garden. It's not like the Garden is "dirty" by any means, as it's just simulation (unless they tried to make this simulation as realistic as possible). Maybe Luka wears shoes once again for health reasons. Perhaps Heperu is just extra protective of Luka.
(Side note: Luka's "shoes" MIGHT be socks. To me they seem more like shoes? But they could very well be socks.)
As far as I know, there's no official explanation for the Anakt uniform variations (honestly, I'd bet if they explained their reasoning Q and V would say they thought it just fit the characters, haha. To me it seems like the uniforms are meant to reflect the characters personalities rather than their circumstances, although just like with Ivan's it could definitely be read both ways).
This is just me speculating too! Thanks for the ask, I really enjoyed talking about this!

Here's Jester and IDOL's opinions of everyone in the household!
{CW: slight dehumanization, IDOL, death mentioned, implied stalking}
IDOL is a jerk. I'm sorry.
Anyway eat up moots!
Jester's opinions:
Evan- He's nice. He has a lot of problems, but I understand and relate to some of them. I don't like having to distance myself fromthis, but I don't want to hurt or startle him.
HABs - He's a pain to deal with, but at least he takes care of Xia. Honestly I prefer not talking to him. I'm scared he might try to eat me in my deer form.
Kevin- The nicest one to me (other than Frost). He's slowly become my best friend. I don't understand what happened recently with him, but I hope he knows I'm always here for him. Also, I hope who ever I remind him of was a good friend to him.
Observer- I don't like when he's mean to Kevin. I am glad he took the time to try and gain my trust though. I enjoy talking to him when he doesn't do anything too bad to Kevin. Though he is kinda unnerving. I don't mind that he watches me and the others though. I feel safer(?) That way.
Xia- Another Chaos biased entity, a goddess no less. She's extremely more powerful than I am and could easily erase me if she tried. I still feel the need to protect her though, even if she doesn't trust me.
Frost- Probably my second bast friend. I really enjoy her company and could probably make a prank team up. It'd be funny. Oh and the medical knowledge is so impressive! I can't even wrap my arm properly.
DISC0RD- Cool looking and has been pretty helpful. I am worried it might try to eat me at times, Thankfully over all it's nicer to me. Teadosa is also an amazing bonus. I like that little teapot.
Joanne- I should have done something....I'm sorry.... I'm so sorry...
IDOL'S opinions: ⚠We had to stop him for villain monologuing. Also he's a jerk. Read at your own risk. (It's nothing too bad) ⚠
Evan- A mess who I find it interesting to taunt.
HABs- I would like to know him better, he intrigus me. Also I do hope he means his treats, otherwise that's plain boring.
Kevin- Another possession. More interesting though due to the eyes though. I know he dislikes me, it's hilarious.
Observer- I've noticed he watches everyone, just like me. I don't have too much of a strong opinion. I do know he's powerful though and better kept as a loose ally.
Xia- A chaos goddess is extremely valuable. While I won't do major spectacles again. I will try to protect her the best I can. It's more interesting when the thing your watching is alive after all.
Frost- A walking doctors office. Extremely puzzling. Also I'm not sure if she's human. Call it a underlying suspicion. How could a mere human do all this?
DISC0RD- Very protective, but can be put out of commission. It's an interesting creature though.
Joanne- This is my favorite part about mortals. Although, she was rather interesting, I would have liked to talk to her more before she left. Oh well, all good things come to a tragic end.

While I have you here...
Hello! And fear not, for I am just a little guy trying to draw and not go insane in the current world climate.
No, but seriously, it's nice to meet you.
My name is Laurence, and pretty obviously, I do art!
I figured my Meet the Artist from this year would be a good way to introduce myself and what I do, but that's only a small snippet of stuff really. So, here is some fun info-
My name is Laurence, but I also go by:
- Lu
- Laur
- LDA
- L. (how I sign off my fanfics now)
Any of those - though I'm often just called Laurence - but I'm always open to new nicknames! (as long as they're appropriate)
I have one (1) dog, her name is Emery
I'm turning 22 on December 22nd
My pronouns are They/He
I have ADHD
I draw and write fanfiction most of the time, though you'll see me bounce between the two quite often because the ADHD beings demand my attention be split at all times
I'm in a couple of RP groups, so if you find my DeviantArt that's most what's going to be posted there (I'll also post some here but not often)
I am mainly a human artist but I've been dragged into cat hell, and thus, have also been learning to draw more feral and anthro characters as well!
My commissions are also open! If you're interested go ahead and shoot me a message here or on another platform!
I mainly choose to depict myself as a being with purple hair, pointy ears, and blue and yellow eyes! Though I also am partial to using my fursona, which is a bilby!
(If you draw me, I prefer you use the above and not how I actually look/drew my IRL self as <33)
I am an adult, which means sometimes, I may draw adult content. I DO NOT want minors to interact with that content. All pieces that need avoided will be marked with 18+ or SUGGESTIVE CONTENT. If I am made aware that you are a minor and you are interacting with content of mine of the more spicy variety, then I'm sorry but I will be taking precautions.
Aside from that, I'm pretty chill usually, so, lets just chill together.
Grab your notebooks, sketchbooks, a drink and a snack, and settle on down!
Here's a list of my current projects:
in no particular order
Praise, Devotion, and Worship (fanfiction)
Maelstrom (comic)
Necrophobia (comic)(put on hold)
A Demon's Guide for Surviving School (comic)
Tenants of Apartment 213 (story/comic)
The Aftermath (fanfiction)
Sector 2 (story)
Alright, I think that's enough out of me for now.
I'll probably be posting some things that I've worked on over the past year throughout the night, so stay tuned! Thank you all! Bye!

Happy Birthday, Conway!
Happy 1st Birthday to Conway!
Yep! It is the 1 year anniversary of the release of version 0.01 (or whatever the versions were called back then) Let's have a talk, shall we? February 8th is when I uploaded and released it on itch. Why February 8th you may ask? Well, I had only planned January as an experimental month for myself, with the oil painting and the VN test. So I'd release it on february 1st... And then it, naturally, took longer. But I guess it works out so that we don't have the anniversary right on update release days.
The past
And yeah, what a year it's been! Thank you to all of you first of all for making this possible. Quite simply it wouldn't be possible without the support of all you generous peeps here. As it turns out, developing a game is a fuckton of work, and if I would need to pay the bills through commission work or what have you there would be no way I'd find the time and energy to work on Conway on the side. And I've mentioned it before in a few places, but for a while around May, June-ish it did look really dicey. The first half of the year I was bleeding about 500-700 bucks a month of my savings. The game didn't really pick up and a good amount of my walks were spent contemplating just when I'd have to see a sign before pulling the plug. End of June? Maybe it's worth to stretch it to July? At the lowest point, we were about a month away from pulling the plug on Conway. But right around that time, the trend in people subbing here started to pick up. While it's only in the past month or two that I've reached the point where I'm not actively bleeding money each month, the trend was the bit I needed to see that maybe people are interested after all!
The present
I've attached the itch stats of the past year. So those of you who would like to have a peek can do so. As you can see, Update 10 was a massive success at least in terms of numbers for the game. Update 9 was already the first one to break the record for downloads that the release day set, but Update 10 got picked up by the algorithms and sat in the most popular furry games for a while. Soooo, yeah, quite chuffed with that spike! We'll see what the long-term effects are, but for now I just enjoy the aesthetic of -BIG SPIKE-. And yeah, the game as a whole is just sitting in a good spot. We've had about 12k downloads in total, around 80k page visits, and a rating of 4.8/5 with 127 ratings (which btw, easy way to help, is to leave a juicy 5* rating on itch. Does wonders for the placement of the game in the different categories on the site, plus it gives me a fuzzy feeling in my tum tum.) It's also been such a joy to see that all characters end up having their share of fans judging by comments and that nobody is left in the dry. Of course, some of them have a bit of an easier time, like Samuel and Julian being the more sociable lot they are, and just the screen time they've had so far. While others like Raj or Arthur are slower burns and even they get some mentions as the favorites of some people, and that just makes me chuffed. Naturally, they're designed to cover different interests and preferences, but I'm always nervous if the characters are good, resonate with people and hope that they can be fun to be around. So any time someone mentions a character it just makes me so goddamn giddy. Some of them will be difficult to handle with grace, and I'm not perfect, so I'm sure for at least one of the main cast what I've planned will fall flat, or I mess it up in some fashion. But fuck it, I'll try. Not everything has been peaches and roses recently though, so I have to admit Updates 10 and 11 have been/are a bit of a struggle. I just messed up planning for my support writers, and it's been more or less just me handling everything for both updates 10 and 11. That's why art has been a bit sparse... Because most of my time is just taken up doing writing duty, and I'm not the fastest writer, unfortunately. Like, at this point, with the game having all the branches and 125k in total word count, the story for the characters and how they've interacted on the two initial days. It makes it a bit more difficult to actually get people on board in a timely manner. I can't just go and say, "Hey, write me a scene where this character and that character are involved, and they do that." Since a new writer knows absolutely zero about all the stuff that's been there before, all the stuff that's planned for the characters and all that jazz. So if one support writer is busy or just has writing block or whatever, it may be, my solution so far has just been going, "Well, shit." :') Not the fault of my writing buddies, of course. They've been absolutely invaluable and I can't offer nearly enough to expect to be the highest priority for them. I'm just happy they want to help out AT ALL for what I can pay them in return. I should have planned contingencies but didn't. Simple as that. So, I've made the decision to bring on another writer in Televassi, and also want to hopefully integrate Robert Baird more again going forward. With more of them willing to help out I will be able to assign things to people as they're available. Which hopefully will avoid me having to do whole updates on my own and take the pressure off of wonderful peeps like Rubric. So yeah, I learned my lesson there, but since it just takes time for people to get familiar with the Conway world and characters, it ended up with me being a bit swamped with EVERYTHING for Updates 10 and 11.
The future
Speaking of what's planned, then? Update 10 closes out day 2, and Update 11 starts after our first time skip. I don't know if you've ever looked at how slow these ships were, but if we ever want to make it to Cape Town, then we'll need those time skips. Not only that, but it also allows for characters to just develop in the meantime, and also their relationship towards the player character. While Characters like Nomax and Julian ended up having some raunchy scenes right away, it wouldn't exactly fit to have others throw themselves at you on day 2. So skipping ahead just keeps things moving, keeps things interesting because we can focus on specific parts more, and just show the development of characters at a more natural pace.
So the next sections are this first post-time skip section that subbed patrons already get a taste of in the WIP update, and then next up on the itinerary will be Morocco. Both sections I'm really stoked about! And I hope you are too. :)
Stretch goals? Patreon did away with them a while back, but we'll just make our own stretch goals, with blackjack and hookers. Just instead of blackjack and hookers, how about we talk Animations?! Hell yeah! I'm no animator, and it's not really a discipline I particularly enjoy either from the times I tried. So, since Patreon is currently about break-even, we can start thinking ahead a little, and I think the first point I want to tackle is some simple animations. Stuff like moving tails, ears, and eyes. Stuff like that.
So how about that, we're currently floating at around 1250 USD a month, and if we're crossing the 1500 USD mark, I'll be holding out my feelers to get these small animations into the game. If you like to contribute to making animations possible, consider supporting the Patreon over here: https://www.patreon.com/Nomax
Possibly animations, an exciting new section of the story, some more v2 character art, some more maritime menagerie characters. Sounds good for a year 2 plan?
I certainly hope so and hope that you all will be along for the ride, as it's been an absolute blast, and I can't thank you enough for making it possible. I just want this thing to be the best it can be for all of you. :)

No. 45 - BermudAir
Sometimes, when I'm especially bored at work, I find myself idly checking to see if there are any interesting planes at Logan Airport. It's common to see an MD-11 or A380, but every once in a while we get Blueprint, for example, or Vatnajökull or Hekla Aurora, or the Blackpink plane, and I always have my fingers crossed one day Xáat Kwáani will be there.
Today, the 23rd of August, I opened FlightRadar24 and was startled to see we were graced with the presence of a British Midland Embraer E175.
What is an airline which hasn't existed since 2012 doing operating a flight to an airport it never served using a type it never flew? Well, disappointingly, they aren't.
As far as consolation prizes go, though, I'm perfectly happy with a brand new airline to discuss.
So I'm reasonably sure what happened here is that BermudAir is using British Midland's old ICAO designator, BMA, and FlightRadar hasn't updated its data to match yet. They do this. I regularly get a kick out of the fact that their map insists Cape Air's Tecnam P2012s are jets.
Regardless, it was a good way to grab my attention! When I say BermudAir is new I do mean brand new - as in, they haven't flown a single revenue flight yet. Their plan is to begin service to Boston Logan and Westchester County Airport (located just north of New York City) on the 31st of August and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood on the 15th of September, connecting all three destinations with Bermuda's L.F. Wade International Airport.
So let's take a look at this girl, temporarily local to me! This is VQ-BLU, but you can call her Topsey, which is an adorable name. She's an eleven-year-old Embraer E175, formerly of Flybe. And wow, is she tropical. Fort Lauderdale is one thing, but just imagine this plane parked in Boston in the middle of a blizzard. Oh, no...it'd just be her bright little tail poking out in a sheet of white...
If you look closer you can see that the interior of the winglet is a very washed out blue with the BermudAir logo on it.
She's vibrant! She's tropical! I love this design, obviously. It would be difficult not to. It's just...visually pleasing, right? It's bright and pink and colourful and gorgeous. While I initially thought this design was sort of familiar I think it might just be a very popular style, because if it's actually taken from a specific preexisting piece rather than commissioned for BermudAir it's certainly not one I could identify. Anyway, it looks nice.
...wish they'd painted the rest of the plane, though.
So this is VQ-BLW, Willy to her friends. If the names Topsey and Willy have any particular origin, it's not one I'm aware of, but as always I prefer named airplanes to unnamed ones. Willy is also eleven years old and a Flybe veteran, and is currently parked at Muskoka, presumably waiting to be ferried to her new home.
One thing I do quite like is the degree to which the design changes depending on the lighting. This sort of fuchsia is great for that. It looks pastel in the light and luminescent in the shadow, but never looks washed out or dusty. The composition of the blues and pink is absolutely beautiful.
For a minute there I thought the engines had some sort of pink design which made me think of a flower for some reason, but upon closer inspection it appears to just be an engine cover lashed on with ropes of a similar dusty pink colour. This is a shame. More airlines need to do creative things with their nacelles. Even if they're subtle, it can make a huge difference when you consider it's one of the most foreground things period when seeing the plane from the side.
That's a shame. Oh, well.
As for the primarily white portion of the body, it could be worse. They've chosen a tolerable sans serif, and they've made it dark grey rather than black to avoid it looking too harsh and out-of-place. I also like the location beneath the window-line, something more typical of turboprops which I think adds a nice bit of variety when done in large text on a jet like this. The stylized A in the logo and Topsey's name are both rendered in cyan, keeping some of that tropical energy throughout the airframe. That said, while the text is quite legible (the generous but not excessive space between letters and the size it's printed in are both excellent) I really wish the cyan-on-white was a bit easier to read.
While somehow the abstract nature of the tail design combined with the massive wordmark at the front prevents the plane from feeling lopsided as many similar layouts do, I still think this could be improved. Beyond the simple fact that it's boring, I distinctly dislike the very luxury-hotel feeling of combined tropical colors and sterile white. That sort of thing has always given me the ick, and also just feels unsure of what it wants to be. Are you having fun or are you going to perform a surgery? Are we a bunch of businessmen in suits having their meeting inside of a hot tub drinking Mai Tais or are we a group of seven to ten college-aged girls with modest Instagram followings playing beach volleyball in a conference room? You can't be both.
But, I mean...in terms of vacation branding, this is about as standard as you get. This is every big resort on St. John's and every luxury cruise to the extremely teal oceans of some archipelago somewhere. So despite my personal distaste for the style in general I have to admit this is a well done instance of it. That art on the tail really is nice, it really just is. I wish I knew who the artist was, because they know their way around a color palette.
So how do we...well, I don't want to say fix this, because I do think it gets the job done. I think I need to reframe my phrasing for this and future reviews: how do we make this an A? And I don't know. There's the obvious, extending the design to the whole plane, but I don't even think you need to go that far. A bit of light colored remnant trailing off into the rest of the plane, maybe a shift for the fuselage itself from pure white to a dusty pink or cyan...or, if you commit to the idea of the beach, both, for a sunset over an ocean. Add something to the engines, you might have something!
But this livery is already kind of admittedly more than adequate. I feel like people who are more receptive to this...vibe than I am would really rate this. And that isn't not a factor in my decisions. I don't just base these off aesthetics, or my rating for Saudia wouldn't be what it is. There's a degree of...trying, here, and a degree of succeeding, even. I do think it's well designed even though it reminds me of the little bottles of shampoo you get at hotels.
So, um...B-, I think. That's what I'm going with for the moment - could someone please "accidentally" get some grapefruit juice on the front fuselage, though? Just as a favor to me.
youtube
Okay, wow, Runway Runway. Nice post, but uh...is this really what took you so long to finish? And don't you normally give some background on the airline you're talking about? Is this some sort of joke?
Well...no. I wanted to put the review in the start of the post for a couple of reasons, but I'd appreciate if you continue reading for some background on BermudAir. There's a lot about the airline that requires some pretty extensive context, and I think it would be actively irresponsible not to talk about. The rest of this post is going to be long, but that's for a good reason, so please bear with me.
BermudAir is actually a milestone - Bermuda's first airline, apparently. I was startled to learn this, and it made me pretty excited. Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory - this is to say, a colony of the English Empire which even in the modern day has not gained its independence and retains the King of England as its head of state despite being self-governed in every practical sense of the term. It would be fantastic to see Bermuda establish its own flag carrier, to have more of its own infrastructure, and just broadly more to call its own that isn't imposed by the British Empire.
And that's when this stopped really being a normal Runway Runway post.
I was surprised to learn that BermudAir is the first airline in Bermuda's history. It turns out that's because it isn't true - though it might appear that way until you roll up your sleeves and root around in the compost bin of publicly available records. While Bermuda's Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) has issued Air Operator Certificates (AOC) multiple times in the past, most were for startups that fell through. People have been trying and failing now for literal decades to make an airline stick. But while no scheduled passenger airlines have gotten off the ground, BermudAir is not the literal first airline in Bermuda. Leisure and charter airline Freedom II appears to mostly fly to Anguilla and is headquartered in Florida but is registered in Bermuda, and supposedly an airline called Brisair also operated from Bermuda but Planespotters.net says it's Swiss and all photos seem to be from Finland, and they don't appear to so much as have a website, so...I'm not sure. I don't even know if Brisair is still in operation. There's also charter and cargo airline Longtail Aviation, which made the news in 2021 when one of its planes disgorged a few assorted engine gubbins while flying over the Netherlands.
This is at least two and potentially three things operating in Bermuda which I would definitely describe as airlines, so BermudAir is not the first Bermudian airline! They appear to be the first Bermuda-founded airline to operate scheduled service to Bermuda, and will be the only one to operate year-round service from the island, but that isn't the same thing as being the first Bermudian airline. You can't just say things that aren't true! And even the government seems to be repeating this.
"We are very happy to welcome BermudAir as Bermuda's first carrier, as they work toward setting a new standard for travel," Bermuda's Minister of Transport Wayne Furbert said in a statement celebrating the carrier's launch. "This partnership represents an exciting milestone for our island, as it enhances connectivity and strengthens our position as a premier destination. With BermudAir's commitment to providing convenient connections, we anticipate a significant boost to our tourism market."
And this just feels wrong. The Bermudian government's enthusiasm about this project doesn't actually fill me with very much optimism given the context in which they're saying this and in which BermudAir exists.
All of what I'm going to say right now is incredibly oversimplified and I don't have the necessary background to not oversimplify it, so keep in mind these are very broad statements and that for a better picture you would need to seek out Bermudian writers. But even my simple version is pretty long, and a little bit technical. All of my sources are going to be at the bottom of this post and I'm sure there's a lot I've overlooked, so if you have anything to add or correct please do so. This said, BermudAir is not for Bermudians.
The flag of Bermuda. Pay close attention to the best coat of arms I have ever seen in my life. Can you imagine how good this would look without the Union Jack cluttering it up?
Bermuda is a very 'prosperous' place, a statement which is deeply misleading. It has a colossal GDP, driven not by any domestic industry but from its status as one of the world's best-reviewed tax havens. Indeed, tariffs imposed by the US have essentially meant that agricultural exports are a nonstarter as an economic pursuit and their wealth comes instead from tourism and thousands of foreign businesses with no real connection to Bermuda flocking there to take advantage of the almost nonexistent taxes.[10]
At various points anywhere between 20 and 30 percent of those residing in the country have not held Bermudian status. This is a term that should be clarified upfront. Bermudians, and anyone born in Bermuda, are British nationals but do not have British citizenship. They instead have 'British Overseas Territories Citizenship', which does not confer the rights associated with actual citizenship, such as that of work or abode. Many Bermudians accordingly do not consider themselves to be British.[17]
However, there exists a local 'citizenship' called Bermudian Status. Bermudian Status is given to those with at least one parent who holds Bermudian status, or by formal government award. It is not given to those born on Bermudian soil, cannot be bought, and is very difficult to obtain if not born into. I have literally never seen such stringent requirements for a citizenship in my life, and this does actually have meaningful consequences. Rights such as those to work, own businesses, obtain scholarships, and vote are restricted to those with Bermudian status. They also cannot purchase property - with one exception.[17]
All of the above sounds pretty horrible, and I'm sure it sometimes is, but it needs to be taken in the context it exists in. Bermuda is an incredibly popular tax haven for the ultrawealthy[10] and accordingly flocked to by nationals of other countries. Although Archibald[17] makes it out as if there is some sort of epidemic of arbitrarily disenfranchised Bermudian-born individuals this doesn't actually seem to be true, as 97% of those born on Bermudian soil actually do hold Bermudian status, as do 31% of those born elsewhere.[18] It may be difficult to obtain, and that may well be a problem, but this does not appear to be an epidemic of people disenfranchised from birth, which does exist elsewhere. For instance, former USSR citizens in Latvia and Estonia were not granted citizenship and many remain functionally stateless, and residents of American Samoa are considered US nationals but not citizens. This makes them, among other things, ineligible for any government benefits for disability or medical care.
These people without Bermudian status aren't just stateless, though. They hold the same British Overseas Territories Citizenship as Bermudians, and may well hold others - for instance, those born on US military bases are US birthright citizens. The majority of these non-Bermudians are foreign-born and thus presumably hold a different citizenship. And citizenships can be something pretty lopsided. A US, UK, or EU passport holds an absolutely outsized amount of power and convenience when it comes to free travel and may entitle you to myriad benefits from said governments. I know a lot of people with dual citizenships who have no love whatsoever for the US or UK but keep their passports because life without one is measurably harder. And think of it this way: a non-Bermudian living in Bermuda is less like someone born in American Samoa, who has no nationality other than the US but cannot vote or derive government benefits, and a little bit more like a permanent resident, who can't vote, a system had by just about every country.
And there's probably a reason Bermuda is so stingy about Bermudian status. I'll be honest, it's pretty telling that unlike many other jurisdictions Bermuda doesn't allow one to pay their way into citizenship. I'm sure some people want that to be the case, given the demographics of non-Bermudians in Bermuda, but the distinction between people actually from Bermuda and those who are just using it for a tax break is actually meaningful. I'm sure there are people genuinely harmed by this law, but there's one more thing I need to point out: non-Bermudians are allowed to own land. The only restriction is that they're limited to the most expensive 5% of it. This sends a pretty clear message about who non-Bermudians are.
Since agriculture is mostly a non-starter and so much of the country is foreigners, aside from tax breaks and registering yachts Bermuda's main industry, particularly for employment of locals, is tourism. The need to satisfy tourists makes everything else frequently secondary to avoid upsetting the fulcrum of the economy and can impede efforts of worker's unions. What taxes do exist are placed on workers and end consumers rather than those who own businesses and property. The majority of taxes come from customs, and though payroll is taxed personal income is not, meaning that all income tax is paid off of wage labor and none off of personal accumulated capital. Land tax does exist, but makes up the smallest portion of tax income.[4] The cost of living is commensurate with the GDP and benefits for the elderly and disabled are notably lacking[13]; most disabled and elderly residents are Black[11].
As with many places with a similar history under colonial rule, Bermuda has an extensive history of violent racial oppression and the effects are still clearly seen today. According to the most recent data I could find, admittedly from 2012, though Black Bermudians make up the majority of the population their average income is 22% lower than that of White Bermudians and their median income 30% lower[1]. While I don't have the data on hand, just the analysis the government itself published, my assumption would be that this means that, though the wealthiest Black Bermudians still make less than the wealthiest white Bermudians, they are still significantly pushing up the average, and a heavily disproportionate number of Black Bermudians make up the ranks of the absolute most impoverished Bermudians.
Most tellingly, from my own perspective, non-Bermudians have a 20% higher median income than Bermudians of any race, and this is increasing at a higher rate than that of Bermudians as well. In the past decade the greatest increase has been seen by non-Bermudian women, and the least by Bermudian men, suggesting that the gender gap is slowly closing while the nationality gap is widening[1]. The Tax Justice Network's 2018 report notes that the Bermudian government has 'conspicuously' never produced a study of income inequality and does not provide equivalized numbers, which makes it difficult to properly derive true numbers and compare to other countries. Still, here is what they found:
While while wages did rise between 2008 and 2016, the highest-earning only just kept up with inflation while those earning lower wages have, in real terms, had their earnings fall by 5%. Although clerical jobs are low-paying compared to the (very inflated) average, they're doing fantastic compared to the 32% drop seen by workers in Agriculture & Fisheries.[4] While in countries like the United States these jobs are primarily sloughed off to migrants with little to no recourse against poor treatment and pitiful wages, in Bermuda these jobs are presumably similar in implementation but half of them are worked by native Bermudans.[4] Black Bermudians are the majority of the workforce, yet 65% of those in managerial and professional occupations are white.[11] This means that most of the people having their wages functionally decrease were Black, further exacerbating the racial wealth gap.
When comparing average to median income Bermuda has some of the highest income inequality in the entire world, comparable to that of the United States and worse than that of London.[4] That is unbelievably dire, especially given how often Bermuda is represented as some sort of poverty-free paradise when attempting to galvanise tourism among the US's upper classes.
As for independence, a referendum was actually held in 1995, and the prospect was defeated by 74%, with a worryingly low voter turnout of 59%. While this clears the required bar of 40% of eligible voters opposing independence, it is still not an inspiring number. Apparently this is fairly normal, with only 60% of eligible voters registered[13] and reliably low turnout[10] suggesting this is the norm rather than the exception. This becomes all the grimmer when a Cabinet Minister "[...] compare[s] the Country to a business that had prospered under Bermudian management". Additionally, said Minister "had detected 'a shift in attitude' against blacks in the UBP. Caucus members who she would not name felt 'too many concessions were being made for black people,' and Government was doing too much to level the playing field.'"[2] Bermuda has for most of its history been ruled by a conservative party which remained in power despite being supported primarily by the white minority, and has had consistently low voter turnout[11]. Their Governor is still appointed by the English Crown, and in 2020 Bermuda was generously granted its first ever Black Governor! She is not, however, a Black Bermudian, and in fact many in the government expressed displeasure at the fact that Bermuda is still not independent, calling for at least a Deputy Governor who is actually from Bermuda, and mentioning that they had been asking for a Black Governor for a majority Black society twenty entire years ago![12]
Now pair that with the knowledge that the Governor appoints the Premier and Senate as well and that these positions are held until the Crown decides otherwise and that racial wealth disparity begins to make more sense. Legal power is concentrated in the same hands it has since its inception as a British Territory, that of wealthy white Britons. It didn't surprise me to learn where the opposition to independence came from. "The powerful families who control much of the island's commerce wish the issue of independence would simply go away," wrote Aline Sullivan for the International Herald Tribune in the leadup to the referendum. From the same article: "One private trust manager, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that if Bermuda became independent, the financial community would 'have to rethink everything. Unless we are careful, we may start losing business' to the Cayman Islands and elsewhere, the manager said. 'People may not think of us if we can no longer market Bermuda as a British colony.'"[3] It seems blatant, reading over this, that while there was a genuine push for independence by the primarily Black permanent population, the question for the actual government was always one of optics and how best to cater to the financial giants using Bermuda as a tool.
The takeaway from this is that Bermuda's wealth is not generated via authentic economic prosperity but by offshore banking conducted by already-wealthy individuals born elsewhere exploiting the country's permissive tax laws, while those who are truly Bermudian have essentially no choice but to lean heavily on tourism as a source of income. Bermuda is not unique in this sense, but it surprised me they'd never so much as had a national airline. That's right, this is a blog about airlines. As best I can tell, this is because it's a particularly popular destination for yachts, and presumably nobody in a position to start an airline ever wondered about whether things should be made a little easier for the yachtless underclasses. When I heard this was going to be the first airline founded in Bermuda, I foolishly assumed that it would be an attempt at a flag carrier to make travel to and from Bermuda broadly more accessible.
Oh, and as for the concerning lack of figures - Bermuda appears to be ridiculously understudied. Although plenty has been written on the wildlife and ecology, and in some specific fields like midwifery, I had a very hard time finding detailed studies of the population and for each useful thing I found I also got around seven articles about marine invertebrates and occasionally something like this.
So if people have done analyses of the publicly available census data, or research of their own, most of it is in places where my student-going-into-archival-science's ability to use databases and my university's JSTOR credentials can't reach. And, well, that's bad. It's pretty bad that aside from the sources I'm using the only thing I could find was one study conducted on seniors' ability to access healthcare. It's not great, by the way.
But that is literally not even why I'm meant to be here.
Okay, enough of the politics! Time for some business speculation! As an undergraduate history student I have even less authority to speak on this than I do on the history of Bermudian wealth inequality, so take this with an even larger grain of salt, but I'm going to spend a moment to discuss the most noteworthy thing about BermudAir - its business model.
BermudAir is a boutique airline which will operate nonstop flights to three destinations on the US East Coast from Bermuda year-round.
This is already a weird concept. To begin with, this isn't a service anyone is in dire need of. Although the only one of their three destinations which currently has a direct flight to Bermuda is Logan (operated daily by a jetBlue A220), flights from the East Coast are not lacking. Delta, United, JetBlue, and American Airlines all fly to Bermuda, and the fact that Westchester doesn't currently have one isn't strange given it's mostly a regional airport and the nearby JFK absolutely does have direct flights to Bermuda. This makes me think they may well be frozen out of business for half of the year. Sure, their passengers won't have to deal with seeing poor people at the airport, but they also won't be able to use their SkyMiles.
This service will be non-stop and year-round. Right now tickets are $199 or so, but when they get their planned cabins installed in November prices will immediately jump to quadruple digits.[6] (...this honestly makes me a little angry. That is an immense difference in price for a service that differs only in initial cost of installation.) This is because the entire airplane will be business-class only. This is actually pretty cheap for business class, apparently. I wouldn't know, I'm not really BermudAir's target audience. The Business Insider article opens with the phrase "Bermuda just got a little more accessible," which is really...a thing that they said in their article.
Business-class-only travel isn't unheard of or anything. Private jet rentals are a thing (for people willing to spend between tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour) and carriers like Qatar Airways and British Airways have had similar models on a limited number of retrofitted planes. There's also La Compagnie, an airline which flies in an all-business-class configuration primarily Orly to Newark. And, I mean, that makes some sense, Paris to Newark is a popular route for business travelers...not sure about Boston to Bermuda.
image: Adam Moreira They're actually one of the airlines I wanted to talk about when I first started this blog. Still might do.
A 'boutique airline' is meant to be the equivalent of a boutique hotel - nice fluffy transport for wealthy business and leisure travelers. This definition gets a bit fuzzy - Asiana Airlines and TAP Air Portugal have both been described this way at least once, and that's definitely not true - but I think BermudAir has helped codify the definition. Though Bangkok Airways self-describes as such, I think airlines like BermudAir and La Compagnie are the true exemplar of the category. A luxury vacation airline that isn't quite renting a private jet or owning a yacht, but is still a luxury airline for luxury. There have been attempts at such before. David Neeleman, known recurring character of this blog, has been involved in two such ventures - Superior Air Charter (formerly JetSuite) and Climb. But those are just affordable jet cards with a Neeleman management style (Neelemanagement?). BermudAir and La Compagnie are fundamentally different. They've just eliminated economy class so they can fit more business class on the plane.
image: BermudAir Pay particular note to the pink mood lighting! Apparently it's meant to evoke the color of the sand on a Bermudian beach.
They refer to it as 'Aisle Class', because everyone gets both a window and an aisle seat (and enough storage space that overhead bins just aren't in the equation, which begs the question of...what if I want to put my things away?). 30 such 'suites' will be installed on each plane on the first of November, but for now passengers can pay a steep discount to fly in a normal cabin where only half the seats are actually sold. I don't know if this is a good business class cabin before, I've never flown business class as I'm not the sort of US national who has a bank account in Bermuda. The pillows have the same design as the airplane's livery, which is nice. An entire paragraph on the website is devoted to describing the luxury meals available to passengers. The real Bermuda experience - clean white walls and a Dark ‘n Stormy, am I right?
image: BermudAir
Hey, um...where are the leg rests? Do those seats even recline? I know this is a mock-up but...are there no seatback screens available? Seriously, what if I want to put my bag somewhere? I know checked bags are free, but I kind of...don't think I would want to do it anyway, because normally it's a waste of time when I can just toss my luggage into a bin large enough I could comfortably ride in it if they were out of seats. Also, are there not...seatbelts? Are passengers going to go flying into the seat in front of them every time the plane lands? Is any of this...even remotely crashworthy? Honestly, is it even comfortable? That's so many hard surfaces and just one little pillow and you can't even move the head-rest. This is worse than the average seat on ferries I've been on.
But enough about the interior! They don't even actually have it yet. What are they doing? In their own words, "BermudAir was created to provide frequent‚ well-timed and comfortable flights for business and premium leisure travellers between Bermuda and the East Coast of the U.S.". So...not much of a flag carrier, is it? That said, the government is pretty jazzed, according to Travel Market Report - it'll be fantastic for tourism, of course![5] Up to 18 weekly flights, and maybe even charters if the FAA allows it[6]. That is a stunningly large output for an airline just starting up with only two planes, and I am honestly afraid.
(And there is a bit of worry in my brain that I have no idea what sorts of regulations airlines with Bermudian AOCs are held to. Ben Schlappig of One Mile At A Time thought maybe the 30-passenger limit was to stay within Part 135 instead of the more restrictive Part 121, but that shouldn't matter as they aren't a US carrier - but what are they, then? Does Bermuda even have the necessary infrastructure to oversee a full-service air carrier with multiple regularly scheduled routes, or are they just going to let BermudAir do whatever it wants? That never ends well at all.)
That said, I'm also not sure it will work in the simplest sense. I'm kind of lost as to how putting less seats on an airplane will create more tourism. Founder Adam Scott claims that somehow their fleet of two E175s makes them equipped to serve the demand for the route, unlike airlines like Delta and American[7], which makes me wonder if he lives on a different planet. Delta and American have the two largest fleets in the entire world, plus regional subsidiaries, and they operate regional jets like the A220 and A319 which are both more efficient than an eleven-year-old E-Jet and filled to capacity. Besides, they have a little advantage called 'the ability to not cancel half their flights if one plane has a mechanical fault'. He also claims using Westchester Airport will save passengers time, and I'm just not too sure about that. Sure, JFK has delays on landing, but at least you don't have to then drive to New York City proper, if that's where you're going (and statistically speaking it probably is).
So how about that founder? His name is Adam Scott, so I will until told otherwise assume he is the same Adam Scott as the actor best known for his role as Jacques in my 7th-favorite Hellraiser movie, "Hellraiser IV: Bloodline" (1996).
If you think of Hellraiser: Bloodline as a Hellraiser film, it's really quite bad. But if you think of it as a Dr. Who special where people have their skin torn and warped in extremely graphic and upsetting ways, it's decent, I suppose. Did you know this was his first ever major role, by the way?
Jokes aside, this Adam Scott is Canadian and a former Goldman Sachs executive. He was among the people who worked on the now-discontinued British Airways business-class-only transatlantic A318 service, and after that ceased operation he became involved with similar startup Odyssey, which planned to replace it. They haven't made a peep since 2018 despite wanting to start service in 2020, but Scott does claim it still exists[7].
Well, I will have things to say about this if it ever launches, considering I now specifically hate this particular man.
Scott describes Bermuda as a 'mini version of London City with very similar demographics and a similar target audience',[7] which sort of made me laugh a little bit, although I'm not sure what emotion was primarily driving said laughter. This feels like a parody of a parody. But they're definitely way closer to being a reality than Odyssey, whether they can make enough money to keep it that way notwithstanding. Their chances are probably better than Global Airlines, at least. But hey, wait a minute...Bermudian airline, Canadian founder...weird, isn't it? I mean, who is this airline for?
image: BermudAir
I know, they said business and leisure travellers, but...isn't that so strange? 'Bermuda' is in the name, but the one year-round service to the US East Coast is going to be inaccessible to most of the people who live there, deliberately carrying as few people as possible!
image: BermudAir
This is actually a reminder that I needed - whenever I find something happening in the US to be cynical and disturbing, there is something out there even worse in a place I'm not supposed to care about. Breeze Airways having first class is pretty philosophically horrifying but at least they do still mostly sell affordable plane tickets. Azul leans quite heavily into its Brazilian branding, but David Neeleman is Brazilian, and their tickets are affordable and their service is accessible. That's just worlds apart from this! I've described flag carriers as being a service provided to a country, but this isn't that, and it's not even a product being sold to a country. This is an airline named BermudAir that Bermudians are just not meant to be involved with. I wonder if this is just something Scott never realized, or if he realized and doesn't care, or if that's actually part of the draw! I wonder the same things about the government, given they seem to have a mindset less suited for a government and more suited for the board of directors of a bank.
And I'm sure they could actually find a bit of a market for direct flights to major cities in the US year-round, when the vacation market's dried up and the only way for someone living in Bermuda to get someplace like New York is to pay way more than the asking price of a BermudAir ticket for long and inconvenient multi-stop flights. But that's so clearly not the point. A lot of those people also probably can't afford BermudAir, and the marketing clearly isn't targeting them.
Here are some posts from their Facebook. Some of the most recent, too. An "idyllic island paradise" where a smiling local Black man will serve you some delicious beverages! How tropical. He might even tell you some anecdotes about how wonderful it is to live in a sunny beach utopia where taxes don't exist. Just take a look at that palm tree! And something that frustrates me even more: just a picture of two Gombeys. The Gombey tradition of dance, costume, music, and performance is unique to Bermuda, and particularly its Black population, originating from the African slaves brought there by British colonists. I find it beyond tasteless to just post a picture of them without so much as a mention of what these costumes represent or who is wearing them, just a caption of boilerplate about your airline's upcoming launch. BermudAir's marketing places these people as literally just part of the scenery. I find this extraordinarily disrespectful.
There's nothing wrong with mentioning Gombey exists - in fact, there are events specifically for it! Gombey festivals! Boxing Day is the biggest day of the year for Gombey, don't you want to book a ticket for December? You could be in Boston eating swallowing mouthfuls of snow every time you try to breathe while a man with a Dunkin Donuts cup in his hand screams rude things at you from his car window, or you could be watching Gombey performances in Bermuda! You could even, for example, describe what these people do, or what troupe they're from, or even just mention them. Just mention them at all. I do find it pretty disrespectful when specific traditions are just waved off with a little vague non-description like 'two individuals on a beach in their traditional costume', but BermudAir didn't even do that little insufficient trifling amount.
It's the complete inverse of BWIA's steelpan logo. Steelpan is a major part of Trinidad and Tobago's history as the birthplace of dozens of musical traditions. Music is a huge part of the cultural history of the country, and part of that music was steelpan. The artisans who make steelpans and musicians who play them are something the people who created BWIA's logo thought was so fundamental to the very idea of their country that they put it on their government-owned national airline, making it the very first thing people who travelled to Trinidad and Tobago on a BWIA flight would see. I didn't end up mentioning it in the post (which is weird, because I have a false memory of including it - I think I may have in an earlier draft but then decided I couldn't fit it in even though in retrospect I obviously could and should have? Or maybe I mentioned it in reply to an ask I now can't find) but when I did my research I kept finding people talking about how much they adored BWIA and reminiscing about everything from watching their planes flying overhead to specific people they worked with, and it was really clear that this airline, beyond just nominally being owned by the government, was created by people who put real love for their country's heritage into their design.
BWIA certainly carried tourists and foreign businessmen but it wasn't made by them. That really, historically, hasn't been how things worked. You wouldn't make an airline in one country with a primary purpose of serving a market in another.

Adam Scott describes Bermuda as his 'happy place', where he has 'developed links' for ten years.[14] Even when discussing BermudAir he doesn't describe himself as Bermudian, just 'linked' to it, a vacationer. There are spaces in BermudAir for Bermudians, though, he makes sure to clarify. They can provide "the flavours of Bermuda and the island’s renowned hospitality" to the actual clientele. Minister of Transport Wayne Furbert expresses his enthusiasm at the new jobs brought on by increased tourism[14], as if a year-round way for his actual constituents to get to and from Bermuda is simply...not something he's concerned about.
I think I need to cut myself off here, but the last thing I need to mention is this: a Bernews article was written on BermudAir, and their website allows comments. Here are some things people had to say.
Daniel G DeSilva: Although this is an “elite” air service, with BERMUDA emblazoned on the fuselage, it would be great if the tail design even remotely connected visually with Bermuda.
Paid off government: First of all this airline will be flying to other places. People forget that there are hundreds of Russia aircraft registered here that have never been in or out if Bermuda. This is not a Bermuda airline. Its just conveniently named after Bermuda and registered here. [...] And if you have to ask about the price then this airline is not for you!
(There was also some scattered speculation about it being some sort of front or scheme, which I definitely have no idea about, though I won't pretend it didn't occur to me while attempting to reconcile just how much this airline is definitely not going to make money. Having looked at their various publicly listed employees they all seem fairly credentialed, but...who even knows at this point. Maybe this was all an elaborate proof of concept for Odyssey all along. This is all so cynical it makes me want to scream.)
And that's just the thing, isn't it?
BWIA used beautiful colors vivid colors, never hiding the fact that Trinidad and Tobago are, indeed, very sunny islands with nice beaches, but that wasn't the point of it. It's so easy to make a plane that looks tropical, but BWIA didn't do that - they made a plane which represented Trinidad and Tobago.
And if I'm being fully honest, I like Topsey. I think she's adorable, and I think the design on her tail is pretty. But she wasn't designed by Bermudians and she doesn't represent Bermuda. BermudAir is an airline for the East Coast US, where people are taught in schools that the victims of an empire are colonists, taking a necessary stand against the iniquity of taxes, and the Wampanoag are no longer mentioned once the first Thanksgiving is over. The people who make up Bermuda are treated as structural parts of the tax haven England built, not citizens of a state or members of a culture. "Bermuda's first airline" ends up having very little to do with Bermuda, somehow. And I couldn't really bring myself to talk about Topsey without talking about Bermuda.
Will BermudAir fail? In my opinion, probably. But in the meantime, one of their airplanes is parked at Logan, and that's because this airline is for people from Boston, not people from Bermuda.

Help a disabled trans person get back on their feet
Forcing myself to ask for help. It's really hard for me to do this cause I always feel like I've already asked way too much, but a few kind folks have suggested I do something like this, so I guess here goes nothing.
For more info about what's going on you can check out this post, but the tl;dr is that I'm flat fucking broke right now with no way to get extra income. A lot of my stuff is super old or super broken and at the point where I need replacements that I cannot afford.
So I guess here's a list of stuff, and general prices, though if anyone has better recommendations I'm super open. I'm limiting it to things I actively need rather than just things I want cause that obviously doesn't seem fair to ask folks for.
Bedding: at this point all my pillows are so old they are actively yellowing. My comforter is pretty stained and starting to tear up at the seams and whenever I come home from doing one of my dog sitting jobs I've noticed how much worse my allergies are. Fixing this will drastically help my lungs and sinuses, as well as help with joint support/comfort.
Allergy safe pillows: Usually between 8$-15$ x 2 at least, 4 preferred (joint support)
Cooling comforter: [link] 35$ plus shipping
Allergy safe mattress cover: Most I can find are between 30-50$
Cooling mattress pad: [link] 43$ plus shipping
Med support: This part is pretty self explanatory as to why I need them. But just in case you'd like to know; I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, fibromyalgia, chrons/ibs, asthma, pretty bad environmental allergies, as well as being recently diagnosed with ADHD/Autism. This leads to near constant pain, always constant fatigue, and just general bad vibes y'know? My body is essentially a poorly constructed ball joint doll that thinks it's funny to just sprinkle on the symptoms.
This one is just way easier to do as a wishlist, cause there's a LOT of things that could help and a lot of them are very expensive.
Work: I work as a digital artist, and the biggest thing I'm saving up for right now is a functioning PC, as my current computer continues to crash and is plagued with a whole lot of troubles and has never really had enough RAM to do what I need. Thanks to the incredible people in my life I have a little towards this already, as well as a big discount through one of my friend's jobs. The build that my tech buds and I worked out would suit my needs and keep me going for a good decade or so is about 1,400$. I've got 500$ towards it already that I refuse to touch for anything else (if it's not life threatening), and I'm trying my best to save up on the side, but bills and life keep making that very hard.
I've got Paypal, Venmo (just ask for QR), and Ko-fi.
I also do commissions but those are quite slow going right now because of all the aforementioned problems. But if you don't mind waiting a while (trying to catch up on older ones right now) you sure can put an order in.
If you are able to help, I cannot express how much that would mean to me. But I also completely understand if you can't. It's tough out there. Especially right now with everything going on. In any case, I wish you all the best, and thank you heartily for reading and sharing.

An Occasional Lurker™ asked...
Which hobby would you give a try if money, materials and space were handled?
I have to pick ONE?? And does it have to be a hobby I haven't yet stuck a finger in? If we're discussing something I haven't yet tried: Blacksmithing. Which sounds more like a job than a hobby, but in the (lack of) constraints that you have given, all the blocks that keep me from even being a helper to an established blacksmith is out of the way.
Blacksmithing would tick off a lot of personally satisfying activities in one category, while also giving the option of never being overly repetitive. How can a hobby that is mostly comprised of swinging a hammer on a hot piece of metal repeatedly not repetitive? I know enough about blacksmithing to know that the art of swinging that hammer is NOT just swinging the hammer.
Where to strike. How hard to strike. How to set up a particular strike three hits back. Even if it's a set of identical knives, no one knife is going to be hammered out identical to any other.
There's the pure physical aspect of it, but there's also the art of it. There's the satisfaction of taking something useless (scraps and/or raw ingots) and making something useful out of it, even if that useful thing is only good for looking at.
But if it's a hobby that I have given a try to before, then weaving. Though any loom the size of a room is more likely to eat me instead and I will never be heard from again. Bystanders will look at me with despair, saying that I have been enchanted by the loom and forced to weave until I waste away.
Nothing of the sort. I have always held threads in my hands, and I will admit that not having the time to get back to it has been detrimental to my health.
What food or snack would you prefer on a lazy afternoon?
Ooo... Trick Question™! (First I need to remember what lazy afternoons feel like.) Can't go wrong with a bowl of baby carrots. With hot sauce. And cottage cheese dusted with season salt.
Popcorn is always a favorite, but only if I'm doing something that can exist around butter. So I won't be eating popcorn if I'm going through some books.
You know what's good? A sandwich with sliced roast beef or turkey breast, colby jack cheese, a right thick layer of spinach leaves, on wheat bread that has just enough mayo to keep the seasoning in place.
But ya know... some thin sliced ham and provolone cheese rollups are good as well. If I have to choose between prosciutto and thin ham, I'll take whichever is less salty. Besides, I'm too busy putting the prosciutto on the roast beef sandwich.
I'm hungry, now, dammit.
Reader's choice, what topic could you happily talk about at length?
Keri.exe is taking too long to respond. Close or wait?
Uh...
WHICH ONE?!
My head is a Trivial Pursuit wheel of chance. I know a little about a lot of things, and I know enough to pretend I can connect the dots, and if the topic is a work of fiction, I will spin fanon tales on the spot about certain characters and how they interact in AUs.
One thing I have learned the hard way, is that there is a big difference between typing a few dozen thousand words and having a sit with a friend and talking their ears off even if the recipient of both actions is the same person.
When I go on a rant in DMs, my first message is "Wall of Words in progress, please come back later.", because I know I am going to plow so many words that Merriam-Webster should give me a commission for selling a dictionary to the recipient. But not every topic that is suited for DMs is suited for public posting nor is suited for a phone call nor is suited for a chat at a café.
What topic that I could happily talk about at length is completely dependent on who is the audience and how much time am I expected to fill (or meet).
I'm treating this question in bad faith, and I apologize, but as the answer is public I find myself wary of my phrasing. There is a terrible tendency on the Internet to treat everyone that is posting about anything is an Expert™ in the topic discussed. And many of the topics that I would gladly indulge in private DMs or a public meeting place are topics that I will NOT even comment on in a public post.
And that's bad.
And that's my problem.
And that's something I need to break myself of.
After all, someone told me recently that there is neither comfort nor safety in cowardice, and yes, I am a coward. I am afraid of being targeted, of being hurt, of saying something that will offend the people I look up to and they abandon me for it.
And funny how little things become the lock-pin that holds larger things in place.
I also think that I don't post like I used to because that same Internet tendency that views anyone with an opinion as an Expert™ also makes it hard to hold conversations about a topic. Posts become hills to die on and fortifications to defend. Having an opinion on the Internet is an act of war.
Or so I perceive the topic of topics on the Internet.
Perhaps my perception is incorrect.
Perhaps I'm typing furiously against clouds.
Or perhaps I'm going on at length about nothing.
Who knows.

——————————————————————————
I missed home, but right now i had no idea where the fuck i was.
Only that I was on some island with a big ass eel pit that injured one of the Crewmembers of the ship I had landed on somehow.
And now I was sitting on a slope in my Giant form with a Birdlegged Maniac who was used as a pillow by a sea serpent.
In all honesty? Fuck.
The last I had seen of my friends was in the storm that had thrown me off the ship I was supposed to be on and now one of the guys that found me and said he'd help me was out of commission.
I glanced over to Jamie, who had given up trying to remove Imugi’s head by now and was just lying there.
They looked sad, but not sad sad, rather the kind where one tried to hide they were sad.
I looked around for anything helpful but the only things I saw were more rocks, some sand and a few palm trees which were barely the length of my under arm.
Palm trees hmm…
A VERY stupid idea came into my head.
I slowly stood up so as not to startle them and walked over to the nearest tree, a dingy little thing that had broken almost in half by the storm.
Wouldn't make it for long now anyway and was only holding on by a thread.
Good thing too, Robin would never forgive me if I ripped out a healthy plant.
I positioned myself so that they couldn't see and tried to get the tree as quietly as possible, which was only half successful.
“The HELL you doing over there? I swear if you do something shady I will get the paint bucket we have on board and pour it into your nostrils!”
That had to be the weirdest threat I had ever received, and I lived in the same castle as Nea.
Man, I even missed her too, how absolutely stupid.
Whatever, I put the tree in my hand so it looked like it grew out from there before turning around.
Holding the hand with the tree up so it could be easily seen.
“Look, Palm tree”
Jamie made a choking noise before starting to full on laugh, keeling back over while Imugi looked confusedly at them before slinking back into the ocean.
“Your jokes are so bad I don't even know why I'm laughing at them!”
I just shrugged.
“Maybe they're funny because they're bad? Or your sense of humor is just as bad as my jokes”
Jamie made a noncommittal noise and I sprawled out on the grass where I was.
“Yo Kitty cat, how tall are you? You're like as tall as Imugi is long”
How tall i was? Well human form was around 5’10, for the giant one i could only guess.
“Uhh dunno? Like thirty feet? I can't exactly measure myself easily like this”
I heard shuffling and turning my head to look. I saw that Jamie had taken the measuring rope which had kind of started all of this mess with Ronan.
“Well then, hold still and I can check! We already went through so much chaos to get this stupid rope that we might as well use it!”
Well, fair.
“Yeah, it would be nice knowing how tall I am exactly, Is the rope long enough for that?”
They shrugged.
“Only one way to find out, also this thing is like fifty feet or so if not i can still measure twice and use math to figure it out”
They walked up next to my head with one end of the rope, setting it down on the same height as my scalp.
“Can you use your thumb to hold this end to the ground? I think id just drag it away if i tried”
I nodded and pressed the end of the rope into the ground while Jamie walked along my side down to my knees, counting the feet as they went.
I did wonder how tall I actually was, so far I had just estimated myself to be around thirty feet but I wasn't sure if that was accurate.
Probably not.
I did my best not to move as Jamie walked along my side, both to not mess up the measuring and to not startle the Bird Legged weirdo.
“FORTY FIVE FEET!”
I sat up abruptly at Jamie's shout, seeing the sun already low in the sky.
“What? Forty five? That's fifteen more than I thought!”
Huh, then again I had never really had anything to accurately measure myself with.
“Yeah! Forty five! You must be bad at math!”
“Does math have anything to do with me misjudging my height?”
Jamie flicked the rope and started coiling it up.
“Well according to some nerds everything is math somehow, So who cares?”
Well, I was the first to admit that there was a lot I didn't know, but everything was math? Who came up with that?
“Well, what now? Are we stuck on the island? I'm sure my friends worry about me and I'd like to get to them as fast as possible! And Ronan needs an actual Medic!”
Jamie tilted their head at me, and for a painful second I was reminded of Oakley, god I missed all of them.
Especially Robin.
“Well, bringing Ronan to a doc, an actual one not whatever Imik and Akeem are doing would come first, but the doc is also back at our base and we need to go there anyway for the map n’ shit.
So i guess now that our Captain’s injured well probably go there faster anyway, so i guess you get your wish”
Harsh, but true.
“Well i did want to get home as fast as possible but not like that, i hope he'll be okay, he will be okay right?”
Jamie just shrugged and waved to follow them, which I did, slowly.
“I'm sure he'll get over it, it's not the first time he got bitten by a electric eel, just never so many, also he managed to get through a fuckton of other weird injuries, so yeah hell be fine, he don't got enough brain for it to be damaged further anyway”
So Ronan would be okay in the end, good to hear.
“Hey! So you can shift into that fuzzy thing and into a giant right? Do you have anything more portable than that? Well be faster if you're not so fucking oversized”
Well, yes, but I hadn't done so because I hadn't trusted them thus far, but if we could go faster…
I waited for a moment that Jamie was looking forward to the boat and then turned the Gem on the bracelet, shrinking down to my human size.
The next time they turned to face me I was already back in my human form and they let out a startled screeching noise that grated in my pointy ears.
“You could do that the entire time? What the fuck! You should have done that sooner!”
“Well, i didn't know you guys, and i'm less likely to be stabbed as a giant creature, also the entire thing with my second heart starting to work and i didn't know if shifting would fuck it up even more”
“...Fair point, let's get back on the ship and jumpscare Imik!”
“What? Why? And why Imik?”
“Cuz Akeem can't be scared, also it's funny seeing Imiks Webbed ears Flare up in alarm!”
So just for fun then, yeah that was okay.
“Well, as long as it's okay I don't see why not, but shouldn't we focus on getting Ronan to the Doc you mentioned?”
Their face lost the mischievous touch.
“Ugh yeah fair, let's go on board and toss Imugi the Halfter so she can tow us away from the island”
They walked up the plank to the Boat and I followed behind,
almost slipping one time as the wood was slick under my feet and the Orange tinted sky made weird shadows.
“If you fall in i will laugh”
“If I fall in, I will make sure the splash hits only you!”
As stupid as being stuck away from my friends was at least the banter with Jamie was a little funny, they were gruff sure, but not malicious.
“Come on Kitty cat! Help me toss the tow thing to Imugi!”
I followed them up to the front of the boat where a variety of stuff was bolted down or straight up Built into the ship, like the box in the front.
The Box looked to be lockable and Jamie yanked out a weird construction of rope and metal, the front part reminding me of the thing they put into the mouth of a horse to ride it.
Then they tossed the front half into the water and hooked the part still on the ship into a pair of curved metal things that were bolted to the boat itself.
So that was the thing Imugi used to tow the boat! Interesting.
“Did you know that Imugi is named that because Ronan kept her in a mug for the first two weeks of her life? Apparently she was TINY! And ‘IN MUG’ became Imugi at some point”
What? That sea monster used to fit in a mug? A bucket I could maybe believe, but a mug?
“She was that tiny? Wait, why was she kept in a mug?”
Jamie shrugged.
“Orphanage probably wouldn't have taken kindly to a sea monster in the house, he left after Imugi got to big to hide, somehow got a boat and a bunch of idiots to help him out”
“You're also one of those Idiots, you're aware right?”
They waved me off.
“Yeah yeah, whatever, to get on this ship you gotta have a few screws loose anyway, and even more so if you end up staying”
Well, at least they were self aware.
There was a sudden tug on the boat and I leaned over to see what it was.
Apparently Imugi had found the tow thingy despite the Ocean getting dark before the sky and was slowly dragging it through the water, Boat and all attached.
Jamie hopped down from the railing and walked towards the stairs, the movement of their legs reminding me of a strutting pigeon.
Yeah, I'd better never mention that, as funny as the mental image might be.
I followed them down the stairs back onto the deck.
“Do we need to steer the boat if Imugi is towing it?”
“Nah, she knows where to go, she's not stupid she’ll know that with one of us injured the best thing to do is go Home”
Well, that was relieving, I doubted Jamie could steer properly, or even if so that they would do so in a normal way.
The sound of a door opening drew my attention while Jamie walked up the mast to the crows nest again.
Turning my head around I saw that it was Akeem, who softly closed the door behind him.
He looked at me unblinkingly for a moment, could he even blink? and then carried on past me as if nothing was amiss.
He opened a hatch in the floor and pulled out an Telescope, hit the mast one time and then tossed the thing up where Jamie caught it in their claws with a single leg.
Impressive, I had to admit that.
Despite their insane shenanigans they managed to function pretty well as a team.
Once again I was made aware of my own friends not being here with a pang.
I hoped i could go home soon, they were nice yes, but i'd rather go back to Tunstead and the Castle in Kamerasca.
Akeem then turned to me and I once again wondered if the guy had to blink at all, him being completely, well, Stone faced.
“Ronan is alright for now, we will head to Kariba Island as fast as possible to get him proper treatment, then after we have brought him to a doctor we will see that we find you a way to get home”
“Thank you so much, can I help somehow? I'm not good with boats or medicine but i can move heavy stuff”
The stone man shook his head.
“We are alright for now, should we need your help i will let you know”
With that he left again and went into the boat.
Huh, thus far I haven't set a single foot into the ship itself, eh whatever.
Also Kariba Island? Hadn't heard that before.
I wondered where on the map that was and what the island itself looked like.
Eh, I'd find out soon enough.
Soo… what to do now? I was stuck on the ship with nothing to do, and I did not want to sleep just yet as i was not tired.
I did not like that, it gave my brain time to think about Home which made me miss it all the more.
I Looked up the mast to the crows nest at the top.
One could probably see pretty far from there.
If Jamie could climb it with sweater covered hands then surely i could climb it normally!
I went up to the wooden structure and tried to jump up as far as possible only to slide right back down despite my best efforts to hold on.
“What the fuck are you doing?”
Came Jamie's voice from above and glancing up I could see their head looking down at me.
“I'm trying to climb! Maybe I'll get lucky and see something I know!”
As unlikely as it was, it would at least distract me from thinking too much.
“Well you're doing a shit job at trying to get up here!”
“Help me then!” “Nah, watching you struggle is funnier”
I rolled my eyes at the retort and tried again to get up, only to slide down again while I wrapped my legs around the mast and held on with my hands.
“How the fuck do you do it? And with fabric covered hands no less?!”
“Hah! I'm just used to it! Tell ya what! If you can get up here with no help I'll give you one of my shiny pebbles!”
I was about to retort that I had no use for shiny pebbles when I saw what Jamie was holding up.
A whole ass Ruby the size of a thumb, partially obscured by the sweater which still covered their hands.
Even in the weird light of the late evening it was clearly visible, especially against the blue fabric.
Well, admittedly i had no need for it seeing as i lived at the castle but damn if that wasn't enticing.
“Where did you even get that?”
“Sometimes I help Imik crack open Boxes from sunken ships! So I get to keep some of the stuff!”
Huh, true sunken ships might contain treasure but one had to get lucky to get anything good.
“Alright, I'll get up there somehow!”
I tried to scale the smooth wood again and this time managed to get a little higher than before but fell down regardless.
“One should think that a guy able to turn into a giant cat could climb better than that!”
Well, true, but the Ardua form had claws…oh wait.
Jamie also used their claws to climb! Granted their bird-like feet were already better for climbing but maybe I should use my nails instead of trying to hold on with only my hands.
Yeah, I think I figured it out.
I slipped my shoes off and put them in one of the bolted down boxes so they wouldn't get lost and then went back to scaling the mast.
This time it worked! Without shoes and using all of my nails to grip better I actually managed to climb slowly up!
“Now you look like a monkey instead of a cat! Good thinking though!”
I looked up for a moment at Jamie's dumb comments and saw I was a little over halfway up by now.
Only a little bit to go!
I went at it and was nearly to the top in no time, noticing it was nearly dark now, damn how slow was i at climbing?
Then my hand slipped.
Before I could slip more or even fall Jamie's clawed leg had gripped my upper arm.
They pulled me up on the horizontal beam and I hung there for a moment like a piece of fabric.
“Ugh”
“Ayy you made it! Congrats!
You don't have to lay there like a wet towel though!”
Ohh this was a bit higher than i had originally thought.
I clung to the wood and tried not to think what kind of injuries I'd get should I fall from up here.
I also tried to calm my breathing and erratic heartbeat.
Well, heartbeats now, at least they were in sync now.
I decided to stop looking straight down and instead looked at Jamie.
Huh, they had made the vantage point into an actual nest, sticks included.
There also was a variety of knicknacks lying around, including some valuable looking things like gems and gold.
They held out a mishmash of shiny and glittery things in a cracked wooden bowl, still covering their hands with the blue sweater.
I wondered what was up with that but decided against asking.
Not my business, and there might be a reason as to why.
“Well, ya made it! As promised you get to pick whatever you want from the shiny stuff in the bowl!”
I continued to cling to the wood with all of my limbs but still peered into the bowl that Jamie held out to me.
There was the aforementioned ruby of course, which glinted despite the sun being almost gone by now, but also a variety of other stuff, some of which were fossils?
One in particular caught my eye, It looked like a crystalized sea star about half the size of my thumb.
The crystal itself was a pretty shimmering opal with hints of green and blue as well as orange.
Well, that would be one hell of a souvenir, and Fable said he liked stars so it would be perfect.
I pointed at the crystalized sea star, still clinging to the wood to not fall off.
Instead of handing the thing to me directly Jamie stuffed it into a little bag with a long cord and put it over my head like some sort of necklace.
“Now you don't lose it!”
“Thanks? I think”
They shrugged and leaned back in the surprisingly roomy nest-like build.
“Hey?”
“Hm?”
“How the fuck do i get down?”
They sat up again and looked down to the deck.
“Uhh, i just slide down or climb down, not sure if you'll manage that though”
“I'm NOT doing that, especially not now that it's getting dark! Please tell me there is some other way down?”
They stared at me.
“Well, only other way down would be to just fall, but i think that's worse for you”
Yes, yes it was.
“Oh fuckdamnit, what do I do now?”
“Eh, im sure Akeem will think of something tomorrow, or Imik though he's better at diving”
I looked at them with a deadpan expression even if most of that was probably lost in the slowly encroaching darkness.
“And what am I supposed to do now? I don't think I can cling the entire night to this piece of wood!”
“Uh, right, gimme a minute to make some space”
They haphazardly shoved anything pointy into one corner of the nest and then pulled me into it.
Despite being only four feet four at most they were pretty strong i had to admit that.
No wonder Imik asked for help cracking open old boxes.
I just flopped face first into it right where I was, shoving a handful of seashells away from where my head rested.
“I think this was a stupid idea, but quite frankly i don't care right now”
“You're laying there like a wet cat, have some dignity Kitty cat”
I just rolled my eyes at them and pulled my legs into the nest as well.
“Whatever, after climbing im too tired to care, you can wake me tomorrow you overgrown chicken”
With that i faced down again and used my crossed arms as a pillow.
It was only a minute later that I felt a clawed foot on my back, and then another.
Jamie settled on top of my back with what sounded like a very quiet chirp.
I was pretty sure for an onlooker they looked like a broody hen right now.
“What the fuck are you doing?”
“You're warmer than the floor”
“Then get blankets or something, im not a fucking matress”
“You are now!”
With that they settled where they were and I could literally feel them poofing up like a little bird.
I gave up with a sigh, it wasn't worth the energy, Besides, it wasn't hurting me.
“Whatever, but if you fall of because i move its your own fault”
“Yeah yeah, i've fallen down before, its no that bad aside from the sprained toe i had once”
I just grumbled something into the floor.
“Hey, you good?”
“...i miss my friends, the last they saw of me was when i went overboard”
“Oh… well we are headed to get a map or whatever, or maybe there's a faster ship that will take you onboard?”
I just grumbled something into the floor, suddenly feeling worse than ever about being so far away.
“Hrmmmm”
I buried my face in the sticks so Jamie wouldn't see the tears in my eyes as I thought about what my friends could be doing right now.
Were they searching for me? Or did they already think I was dead?
Robin would surely push for a search but Rikaad, well, he usually only thought logically, and searching for me when I might be dead and he had something else to do wasn't logical.
He still had to stop the deserter fleet from Maringand and try to deal with the pirates.
And Arthur had no idea what even happened, he probably thought we were all on the boat doing stupid stuff.
My hands gripped one of the surrounding sticks and squeezed it till it broke.
As I buried my face even deeper into the sticks, which weren't as uncomfortable as expected, I felt Jamie move off of me.
They did not say anything but I could sense them right next to me.
Suddenly there was the sensation of a hand raking through my hair.
The hand was coarse, almost scaly and the fingers seemed to be tipped with claws.
Jamie's hand? No wonder they hid them in the sweater, people aren't nice to anything they deemed dangerous, and claws definitely counted as that.
I didn't move, or even make any attempt to glance at their hands to see what they looked like exactly.
The only thing I did notice was the number of fingers, five.
So definitely not like Oakley.
I kept lying there unmoving as Jamie detangled my messy hair somewhat, picking out salt and other stuff found in the sea that had gotten stuck there as I fell into the water in the storm.
The word preening popped into my head for a second.
As much as I did not want to admit it, the sensation of claws gently scratching at my scalp was strangely soothing.
I maneuvered my arms to be around my head so I could hide my face even better.
Just as Jamie didn't want me to see their hands, I didn't want them to see the silent tears running down my face.
God, I missed my friends, even Nea.
Despite having a person next to me who I was on good terms with, I had never felt lonelier.
Maybe because I finally knew what it was like to have friends and didn't want to lose that.
I tucked the arm with the bracelet under me and shielded my face with the other.
I stayed like that and let Jamie mess with my hair until I fell asleep, not once giving in to the temptation of looking at their hands as curious as I might have been.
I was who knew when later awoken to shortness of breath and a slap to the face.
I sat up abruptly, panting and gasping for air.
I looked around frantically, not recognizing anything as my sight refused to focus, leaving everything blurry while hyperventilating.
I gripped at my chest, feeling both of my hearts beat wildly and making the thumping sound echo in my ears.
Then I got a second slap to the face and my eyes finally focused somewhat.
“Whh?”
“Man you almost fell off! Are you okay?”
I looked at the person talking to me, noticing frizzy hair and a blue sweater.
“I- uh, Jamie?”
“Yeah! Who else could get up here?”
My brain was working too much and too little at the same time and I felt nauseous.
“Dude calm down, i don't want to slap you a third time”
I rolled over and dry heaved, actually glad to not need to eat right now.
“Do I need to get Imik or Akeem?”
I shook my head, still feeling awful.
There was no mistaking the way my limbs shook and my mind reeled with Images id rather not remember.
“No… im- im fine, just give me… some- some time okay?”
While I never had one prior it didn't take a genius to figure out I just had a panic attack, and even now my hearts were beating like mad in my chest and I felt weak, trying to steady my breathing.
“You don't look fine, what the fuck happened?”
I could sense them poofing up next to me while I leaned my head on the rim of the nest.
I closed my eyes tightly to try and banish the Images of corpses on a bloody field and an Injured Fable.
When that didn't work I opened them as looking at the ground way below me was better than those images.
“Hah… Panic attack, when i got tossed overboard i left the medicine from Oakley in my cabin”
“PANIC ATTACK? You don't think mentioning something like that beforehand would be a good idea? You would have fallen off hadn't I grabbed you!”
I groaned and tried to calm my shaking limbs and racing hearts.
“I never- never had one before! Didn't think i- id get one”
Suddenly a hand shoved my chest down again and a pillow was shoved under my head.
“Lay down dumbass, i'm going to get Imik”
“Wh-?”
Before I could say anything they had started climbing down already.
So instead I let my head sink onto the pillow and tried to calm down, repeating the breathing exercises I had shown Robin so long ago.
Breath in four seconds.
Hold for seven.
Then out for eight.
God, all of this sucked.
At least without needing to eat, I didn't have the problem of throwing up.
The random dry heaving wasn't any more pleasant though.
I rolled onto my back to the best of my ability and just stared at the blue sky, my vision still a little blurry.
I decided to lay there with shaky limbs until Jamie came back.
I felt absolutely awful, I never wanted this again, but I had no hopes of this being a one time thing.
I dug the heels of my palms into my eyes in an attempt to make the flashes of Images stop, not keen on reliving the moment Oakley Burned like a dry leaf.
Or the time Fable fell into the river after he got shot in the foot.
I rolled to my side and tucked my knees to my torso, dry heaving again which caused uncomfortable muscle spasms in my abdomen.
My two hearts were still beating wildly, but at least they were in sync now.
For the moment I just lay there trying not to get another panic attack and waiting for Jamie or whoever else to help me get off this stupid mast.
While I lay there I could hear the sound of metal thunking against wood and I closed my eyes tightly as it happened again, curling up and putting my hands over my ears as the sound came again, being horribly reminded of the sound the Arrows had made when they hit flesh.
Luckily the sound stopped as I was about to start hyperventilating again, but I still couldn't bring myself to move, staying where I was, curled up and with shaky limbs.
I was vaguely aware of Jamie being back and Imik also somehow being up here.
Akeem was probably too heavy.
I tried to look at them through my unfocused eyes but only saw blurry shapes.
“Its okay, calm down”
I heard one of them speak but through the white noise in my ear I could not tell who it was.
I flinched away when I felt a hand touching me.
“AKEEM! TOSS ME THE STUFF!”
Stuff? What stuff?
The blurry shapes moved and I could make out one of them leaving my line of, very blurry, sight.
Judging by the amount of yellow I could make out it was Imik.
He held a stick or something under my face before breaking it in half.
I smelled something weird, like an overly sweet plant but with a slight hint of rotten leaves.
It made my head swim and my thoughts blur together into a deep thrum.
My limbs feel heavy as well and I lost whatever little focus I had in favor of the fogginess.
Shortly after that my entire vision went black and I was back to being unconscious.

hey!! due to possible embarassment im going anonymous so i dont out myself as the most borderline obsessive ruby/nan quest fan out there
but have you ever had a phase where youve tried to coax your friends/mutuals in an attempt to fill up the empty community while also commissioning related content in some desire to experience something new cause not a lot of people make new stuff for rq and nq anymore graah
Sorry for letting this one sit for a few weeks, my laptop still isn't fixed yet. Also this is THE place to be extremely borderline obsessive about stuff, even though claiming to be "the biggest RQ fan" means you now have to fistfight me for rights to the title.
I've definitely "coaxed", but in more of the passive "hey look at this cool thing" and talking about it semi-frequently in "talk about media you like" spaces and stuff. Which has been semi-successful, everyone I chat with at least knows about those quests and has prolly read them. And I don't think I've ever tried to commission anything unfortunately.
Also yeah, I know what you mean in terms of not a lot of stuff happening. Which I imagine is for a couple of reasons.
RQ ended roughly 15 years ago, and NQ 9 years ago, so we're a bit (fashionably) late to when it was active.
Speaking of activity, being heavily interactive and mystery-themed, the blood would be pumping most when people were still asking questions, finding answers, and Doing Stuff. Some questions are still open to ask about, and things to talk about, and excitement for Really Good Media never dies, but still.
Adding onto THAT, the majority of the activity for both were on 4chan and questden, neither of them traditional or very well known forms of social media (except the former, but it's not "popular"), and neither very conducive to long-term content or "fandom".
And finally, "quests" have always been niche to my understanding, so a specific quest would be twice-over.
It's a lot of numbers but the math still adds up to "not that much activity". Or at the very least it's occasional. Still cool as hell when it pops up. Regardless, my preferred coping mechanism is in Adjacency. Weaver's done other quests, and Dive Quest is still ongoing (it's being updated right now as I type). He's also done other non-quest work, like Boxdog or Pack Street or whathaveyou (all really good). And there's also a lot of other good quests on questden made by other creators. Re-reading DiveQuest, I suddenly remembered Knight Blades was meant to be an official story running in parallel, and while I somehow did not yet read Knight Blades specifically yet (super Getting Distracted powers GO), I did go through Reaver's other catalogue of works, which has been an interesting and somewhat tumultous experience.
And regardless of anything, we still have some of the OG shooters running around. fyeahrubyandnanquest was active as late as 2021 (and still has stuff I haven't seen or reblogged yet), and I don't know if you've ever heard of them (;D) but someone called rubysvn has a fansite up with all sorts of goodies like an old RQ remake, information on lost media, and so on. So it's definitely a low energy sort of fandom, but nowhere near a dead one.

15 Questions: Character Edition
Tagged by @words-after-midnight! Using this for OCs as well as writers is a fun idea.
Going with everyone's favorite repentant bloodborn and fish dad, Renato (who just got some lovely new art):
(Thank you again to @/littlestpersimmon for taking the commission! I love the background and fish details especially. Go check out more of Caleb's beautiful art and his comics if you're not familiar with them already!)
1. Are you named after anyone? My given name came from my Portuguese great grandmother on the Dimas side of the family, my father's side. I chose "Renato" as a teenager because the meaning (reborn) applied to both my transition and future as a bloodborn. Anyway, it shares the first letter and same number of syllables with the old one, so I also just liked how it sounded.
2. When was the last time you cried? I...honestly can't remember. Really. I'm not trying to sound tough or cool or anything. I must've cried when I was still a child of course, before the break. I can recall afterwards, though, watching the harbor get farther and farther away as my family fled the destruction on a ship. My eyes were completely dry. I still felt...still feel despair, anger, sadness. But after the world changed, I did too. Crying just seemed like a waste of water. It wouldn't get me anything, so my body just...didn't bother with tears.
*shifts, visibly nervous* But I think...I think I'd like to cry again someday? Is that a strange thing to say? Nevermind--forget it. Next question.
3. Do you have kids? No, but I have the next best thing. *opens wallet with photos* The goldfish is Tesoro--Tes, for short. They can roll a tiny football into a mini net. Ah, they're so talented! Then there's Beija, the pleco. She's nocturnal like me, but rather shy. And of course I can't forget the Venerable Order of Lady Guppies: Sisters Dolores, Joan, Hildegard, Leonella, Mary Celeste, Teresa, and Abbess Malfada. They're named after nuns since there aren't any male guppies in the tank and, well, you get the idea.
4. Do you use sarcasm? Occasionally, to make a point maybe. I prefer saying something outrageous with a serious face, though. I've gotten quite good at it over the years.
5. What's the first thing you notice about people? It's going to sound terrible...it is terrible, but true. I try to see if they have a weapon, and assess their vulnerable points, gauge which would be best to strike first. You know...to incapacitate. Or kill, if need be. It's ingrained into you as part of becoming an Aquila. But I'm sure you don't want to listen to such a dark subject.
6. What's your eye color? *sighs* They're blue-green, or aquamarine, or sea-green, or whatever you want to call them. I honestly don't find them that special. The way dark brown or black eyes shine is much more appealing, in my opinion.
7. Scary movies or happy endings? Hm. I'm just as likely to be annoying and complain about either one being unrealistic. I think the execution and style is what matters to me, not the category.
8. Any special talents? Winning people's trust. Being deserving of it... that's another matter. I've been told I pick up languages rather quickly, at least as far as basic conversation goes. Of course I grew up being a strong swimmer and diver.
9. Where were you born? On the Pacific, in a ship's medical bay, while my mother was accompanying my father to the States. That meant I was a default Brazilian citizen, although both my parents had dual citizenship.
10. What are your hobbies? Looking after my fish, making a nuisance of myself, finding what little pleasures I can take. I'm starting to realize just how much of my identity was tied to being an Aquila, honestly. Without that...well, I suppose I'll just have to test things out and see what sticks.
11. Have you any pets? Oh, do you want to watch all my videos of Tes and the others? [A/N: I advise you to decline. There are a lot of fish videos.]
12. What sports do you/have you played? I practice various styles of fighting and marksmanship, but that's survival rather than friendly competition. I never had a real opportunity to play any, given the world descended into chaos when I was ten. I mean, Ollie and I used to play a game where we'd dare each other to touch sharks while scavenging. Does that count?
13. How tall are you? 5'5". Many of the deadliest predators are smaller than their prey.
14. Favorite subject in school? I only attended about five years of Catholic school. My parents found me tutors for various subjects after the Break happened. I did fine with math, reading, science, all of that, but I preferred learning and honing skills. Spear fishing, sailing, foraging, those sorts of things I could use in a practical sense.
15. Dream job? *grins* Indolent concubine of a lofty noble or conquering warlord (gender neutral). Perhaps if things work out with these supposed merfolk they'll have some openings available.

Questions about OCs and stuff
You can find the original file here! I reblogged it super late at night.
Gonna fill this one out myself, because it looked fun!
OC questions:
* Who was your first ever OC? Do you still “use” them? How have they evolved over time?
Oreana was my first ever OC, and yes I do! She evolved from me wanting to write myself in with my favorite fixations to becoming her own actual character.
I could tell as a character she wanted to have the princess title removed, but I refused since I wanted that to be another obstacle for her. XD
2. Who is your newest OC? Why did you make them?
Asther Thyme, my goat OC was one I bought on toyhouse, but newest one made by me is Demiurge turned into a jackal.
I bought the goat because I am trying to rethink about this old idea of mine I wrote years ago as a kid that had more furries in it than humans. Demiurge turning into a jackal was just originally for fun but he stayed after awhile.
3. Biggest self-insert OC?
Oreana. XD; While she's come a long ass way since then, I still feel the parts of me that are in her.
4.What kind of music do your OCs listen to?
There's too many to list. Oreana just likes anything with a good beat, and Ignatius and Demiurge prefer instrumental.
5. What are some of your OCs biggest fears?
Oreana: being used again Ignatius: enduring loss again Demiurge: the loss of himself
Demona: never returning home
Cheshire: Demiurge ever getting his Creator's love when he feels he doesn't deserve it.
6. Do you have any OCs without stories? Will you ever create one for them?
Yuna, Asther, Elasha, and Haruka. Their Toyhouse bios aren't even filled in yet, because I don't know what to do. XD;
And yes, they will! I just have to get my ideas all together first.
7. What are your favourite relationships between your OCs? (romantic or platonic!)
Romantic, mainly because of the lack of love in my life. XD;
8. Do you have any OC family trees?
Oreana does have parents and 2 brothers—as well as an ancestor I can't get into because that's spoilery, and Ignatius has a twin brother.
9. Favourite OC?
It bounces from Oreana, Ignatius, to Demiurge.
10. OC you most struggled to make?
Ignatius. In fact, he went through a redesign about a year—er two years—ago. He originally was just going to look very much like a guy from YYH I loved but a naga, till I decided to make him more like an amalgamation of characters and ideas I loved. Doing that was so much so for the better. As I don't have to feel fixated on the one canon character to be fixated on him.
Fanfic questions:
11. * Sum up one or more of your wips!
Werewolf professor in a fantasy styled Victorian London looks to try and quell the fear over the werewolf curse. It's a commission so I can't really plop too much of it down.
12. Which story took the most research?
Anything from Assassin's Creed. Especially the Victorian London ones regarding brothels, tuberculosis, opium dens, and factories.
Don't get me started on the sex stuff... since that was considered 'prudish', it feels nearly lost to time.
13. Which story has the most lore?
Uuuh... A Love Most Profound and or The Demon King of the Desert, depending what you mean. Both spoke of their beliefs and even had rough outlines of their worlds.
14. Current word count of all your main wips?
I don't think I have any active yet since I'm on vacation.
15. How many projects do you have going on right now? Are there any that you doubt you’ll ever finish?
I have my private journal
A private personal story
In Another Life, We Could Have Been Lovers
Amnesia: A Dreamer's Requiem
An Empty Heart Full of Memories
The Devil After Midnight
The Devil's Tome
Within the Dream Temptation
The Princess and the Dove
I am not sure. I would like to get through all of these, but it's doubtful.
16. What was you first major project? How far along is it?
I guess The Devil's Contract would be considered that. And it's done now at 50 chapters. I was quite happy to have it finished.
17. What are some tropes and character dynamics found in your wips?
Slow burn, soulmates, and just romantic stuff.
18. Describe the setting of one or more of your wips
Horror fantasy of who is doing what and what is happening under the OC's nose, Victorian werewolf fantasy, and murder fantasy with a bit of reincarnation? I guess we'll say.
19. What are some things that inspired your stories? Real events? Maybe a dream?
Dreams more than anything, and if not those, anything I play or watch. Even The Demon King had elements of LOZ in it.
20. What story are you the proudest of? Why?
The Demon King of the Desert. It helped me come to terms with a bit more online trauma, and it seemed to touch a few folks. So I'm happy with it.
About me questions:
21. * When did you start considering yourself a writer/artist?
Artist, I always felt I was one. In fact, I was quite upset when I got online and people preferred my writing over my art. XD But I came to terms with it after awhile. Heck, I realize when I blend the two, people enjoy both.
Writing started to happen the more I wrote stories on websites, and folks came to love them or use them as a means to shoulder through a tough time in their life.
22. What are all the “kinds” of writing/art you do? (short stories, poetry, screenplays, digital, painting, clay, etc.)
I do short stories, poetry, digital art, traditional art too at some points—and sing as well as (kind of) play the piano.
23. Are you in any writer/artist groups? (Ex: discord server!)
Sadly, not really. I get nervous to spread my works to places I'm not comfortable in. But I've heard joining discord servers is a good idea.
24. Do you have/want a career in your medium? If not, what do you do/want to do instead? I would love to publish a book or do a comic of some sort. How I'll go about that, I have zero clue.
25. What’s your favourite genre to write? Is it also your favourite genre to read?
Fantasy and or romance. I prefer to read fantasy over reading romance. I only write romance because of the trauma in my life.
26. What are your favourite books?
The Maze Runner and The Last Unicorn.
27. What are your favourite movies?
The Last Unicorn,Watership Down, and now The Super Mario Brothers Movie (I've watched it like 4 times since I bought it lol).
28. Favourite songs at the moment?
Moonlight Shadow (original artist Mike Oldfield but any artist will do), The Secret of Monkey Island intro melody, and Tombi from Trigun.
29. What was your first fandom you were in? Did you make any art/fanfic for it?
Ronin Warriors, and yes, I wrote and drew for it but ALL that stuff is now archived and lost to time. Lol Well, only gone from the net, really. I still have it offline.

hi! i recently started doing commissions so i wanted to ask if you have any piece of advice to give?
Hi! Sorry about the delay with getting back to you on this ❣️
I may not be the best person to ask for advice on commissions, since I’ve written only 2 commissioned works – though they were huge and I’ve put a lot of thought, effort and a part of my soul into each one. But I’m not like a regular commission writer, just to be sure.
What I can offer is that I believe in personal brands. So I believe a person comes to me and pays me to provide them with an unrepeated experience that only I can deliver. I fully allow for each commer (the person who commissions me) to give me their specifics for the plot, the main character, the scenes etc – and I use those as the roadmap, the firm string that pulls the whole story along – but my magic comes in when I manage to stick to what they’ve wanted and at the same time surprise them. Which means I always add my own personal touch. I’ll give an example: with No Cure, the commer requested that the Reader character has a Nullification power, i.e. she can nullify others’ cursed techniques and cursed energies. I used that as a basis, as if it was a canon premise, and I expanded it. So the Reader’s usage of it during her first fight against Gojo was wholly my creation, and similarly when he trains her on the temple grounds and she develops a variation to her technique, those are my expansions as well. The commer was also quite taken aback by the way Gojo justified training her on temple grounds, which also involves the technicalities of cursed techniques and energy that I have expanded.
The personal touch (that I’ve described one instance of above) requires me to put a lot of thought into each commission, which also means each commission requires a fair bit of time. So don’t be in a hurry to churn out content for your commers. I think it’s disproportionate and unfair to expect for quality work to be done in a short time. Quality does take time. I’ll be honest, in all, each of the 2 commissions that I’ve done took me about 3 months to produce – counting from the conception of the idea in the commer to my final delivery. 3 months sounds outrageous, but each commission that I’ve produced is like a standalone novel and I’m proud of them, as I’ve put in a lot of my time, thought, energy, and soul into them. So my timeline is fully justified, especially when I remember how happy, surprised and satisfied my commers have been with what I delivered.
In more practical terms, you need to set out your terms clearly (I say this both as a creator and as a lawyer) so that there’s no discrepancies and no grounds for dispute. To gauge your commer’s preferences, you can use a survey form that you can create and use on each new commer. Give your commers periodic updates on how things are going and with the updates provide some snippets of the work you've done so far (I also provide them with additional research materials: for instance, with Dimming Hearth, the theatre and 7/11 shop locations are real in Tokyo – since central Tokyo is emphasised as the stage for the AiB games – so I shared with my commer the visuals for the scenes I wrote).
In terms of smut scenes I have a rule I set for myself: if it doesn’t turn me on while I’m writing it, then the smut I wrote is no good. But I also hate scrapping stuff so I make sure it does turn me on lolol. In more practical terms it means that, since I’ve low libido lately, I get deliberately tipsy before sitting down to write my smut scenes and I write them in 1 or 2 sitting to not break the continuity of my zone. If the smut I wrote turns me on, I know it will cause a fucking waterfall for my commer.
Do your research and set a fair price for your work. I know we live in hard times – as do I. But I find that a lot of creators aren’t even aware of the fair market value of their own labour, they haven’t done the research. Look on Fiverr: there are lots of fanfiction writers on there too and check out their fees. You’ll see that what Tumblr creators often charge for their hard work is scraps compared with those. You can make a decision to charge less to attract more customers as long as it’s a valued and informed decision on your part.
As you know, I’m more of a long work writer – both my comms are above 20k words – so my tips may not be as relevant if you deliver shorter commissions, but still I hope you find something useful in here. Good luck! 🍀

Selling Skins
My last post contained a lot of thoughts on skinning, the attitude towards coders in the rpc, and what we're actually paying for when we buy a skin. I kind of left it off with a so what, and a promise to talk more about my approach going forward. My thoughts on that are below.
Having made a completely original skin, and realizing how much time and effort it requires if I'm not doing derivative work every time, I also realized that doing customs makes no sense for me. There's no universe where that works out to be a reasonable use of my time- not just because the compensation is so far out of line with what I would normally charge for my skillset, but because I also wouldn't even be working on things I was necessarily interested in. I'm willing to discount my work to help the community in general- but only if I'm not treating it like an actual job, with clients telling me what to do and dictating the creative direction of my skinning. I don't want to deal with all that.
That said, there's some reasonable talk about what multisales and their value once they've been sold dozens of times. I think there's a sweet spot to be found there with limited multisales. Doing it that way allows a coder to make a reasonable amount of money in return for their time and skill, while also making sure that anyone who buys their skin won't be using it in an oversaturated field, full of other versions of the same thing. My plan moving forwards is to choose designs and new approaches which are interesting to me, fun for me to code, and likely different structurally each time. I probably won't be working off a base very often. I will be striving in every skin to deliver something which is (to me) a near-professional level of work- with responsive, intuitive accessible, performant designs. Because of this, I'll be pricing higher than most multisales. Most skins I see look very aesthetic at large screensizes, and simply don't function well in any other way. I can't code like that, it's simply not in my bones. So, given that, I will probably charge around $100 for a full skin, selling it up to ten times depending on the amount of time I spent on creating it. I will always fix any bugs which are found in a skin of mine, and I'll do a first time install for free. I think that's a situation which is most fair to everyone involved. There's a certain amount of uniqueness for the purchaser which doesn't require an exorbitant amount of money to commission me. I get to work on things I actually like and enjoy coding. I can hold myself to a standard I'm happy with in the work without drastically undervaluing myself or asking any one person to compensate me for that standard. Admins can actually afford a skin which rises to an high level on stuff that usually gets ignored. And if the way I code doesn't appeal, so be it, there's no butting heads over aesthetic preferences. I'll probably catch some flak for talking about my work this way, or pricing it along these lines, to which I can only shrug. I've worked in software development for a long time now on top of my education. I know what my time is worth, and I know how much I'm already giving away for free doing it this way. This is the structure I can feel good about, and I hope that as I start to release skins the people who purchase them feel like they got what they hoped and expected they would. If that doesn't seem to be the case I'll reevaluate- but honestly if I can't find a happy medium between using my time well and delivering a good product, I'll probably go back to just coding new skins as needed for myself. Anyway, those are my thoughts on how I'd like to balance providing a service and preserving my sanity as I start to skin for the rpc. I hope that makes a reasonable amount of sense to people, and I look forward to bring things live in the new year!

Chapter 85: Total Recall
youtube
Well, now that we’ve had a good laugh and some great times, it’s time to get into the big stuff. We’ve had our sweet fun chapters, but now it’s time we get serious as we get into Chapter 85: Total Recall. By far one of the most memorable chapters in BCB, with the second most impactful moment in recent memory!
Look we get one alright? I get one. What was the most impactful moment you ask? Oh, that’s easy!
Why yes, I am proud of myself. Very much so, thank you for asking, your boos make it all the more worth it. But seriously, Total Recall is an interesting chapter to revisit because going back to reread it’s allowed me to bring up and talk about some of the moments that got overshadowed by that one big moment and the little things that lead to it. One thing I want to point out though about the early part of this chapter though, is all the callbacks!
It straight up just pokes at the carnival chapter! Which I guess it has to since it’s another prom chapter, so it would naturally draw comparison to the previous prom chapter, but still it’s worth mentioning since BCB has this nasty habit of preferring to push aside things from Volume 1 that it doesn’t like. With a common consensus at the time being, “NEW READERS SHOULD START FROM VOLUME 2! THAT’S THE BEST WAY TO READ BCB!” And while yes, we did also get nods to past gags during the Stacy chapter but that was a commissioned chapter with a character that hadn’t been relevant SINCE Volume 1. But here it’s more in your face and lingers on that a lot, with whole pages used to remind you of what happened, and how far Paulo has come in his romantic journey. But it’s not just Paulo though, as that jab at the carnival wasn’t just a one-off! It actually sets up THIS scene:
Yeah! The awkward talk between Daisy and Augustus, that reaffirms his character and shows that the AU of Love My Way was correct in that he was just intending for that moment to be nothing more than a kiss, but it was still over the line? The scene where Daisy repells Augustus, but tells him that he needs help? THAT WAS IN THIS CHAPTER! I COMPLETELY FORGOT! I bet you did too, didn’t you? But as for the actual chapter, Paulo goes to the junior prom and we get to spend time with all of them! Of course, Rachel, but also Jess, Matt and Jordan who is…
Going through his own character arc it seems. And I love it! It harkens to a critique I had with the comic at the time, and even now in that it shows that there is life outside of the main characters’ plotlines! While I’ve complained and maintain that Jordan’s no-good-very-bad-inconsequential love square is fucking POINTLESS; in here it helps flesh out the world a bit. Much like the Stacy chapter, it shows that these side-characters we may not care about have lives of their own, their own little drama arcs and romantic interests, it’s nice! Although it’s weird to compare him to Mi- wait a second…
youtube
oh ha. Ha. Very funny Taeshi- IS THAT WHY ROXY GETS SHOVED ASIDE AND CAST AWAY LIKE SHE NEVER EXISTED? IS THAT MEANT TO BE LIKE HOW MIKE TREATED LUCY? *hissss* positivity. Positivity… BUT WE WERE ROBBED! Everyone gushes over how adorable the twink team is...
BUT WE HAD THIS CUTIE PATOOTIE WAIFU BAIT RIGHT HERE! SHE HAD A FUCKING NAME! SHE HAD POTENTIAL! WE WERE RRRRROOOOBBBBBEEEED! Ahhh oh well. The girls hang back as the boys drive home, and we are treated to an actually nice bit where Jordan sympathizes with Paulo a bit, and it’s sweet before they all get Charlie St. Cloud’d an-… OH MY GOD I GET TO USE THIS PHRASE! OH MY GOD GET IN THE CAR, WE GOTTA GO RIGHT NOW! I GOTTA SHOW YOU SOMETHING!
So “Getting Charlie St. Cloud’d” is a term that I and only I ever use. If you find another person using that term, that is me do not reveal yourself until the time is right. I have been waiting YEARS to use the term, because it perfectly describes a common trope in media. The phrase comes from the movie Charlie St. Cloud. Have you ever seen Charlie St. Cloud? No! Of course you haven’t, it’s a stupid boring fucking movie from 2010 that is only known for two things. One being that it starred Zach Efron hot off the heels of High School Musical in a dumb melodrama about a guy talking to his little ghost brother, but the other was that in the trailer for the movie it prominently featured the trope where two characters are having a benign conversation where out of fucking now-
And now the cursed knowledge of the phrase, “Getting Charlie St. Clouded” is in your brain tooooo. But jokes aside, we really should talk about this scene because it does something very very well. Pacing. And I know, I joke and poke and get angry at the overuse of splash pages in recent chapters. Going so far as making a drinking game out of Eternal Flame for how many there were in that but in Total Recall? I’m going to tell you to do something that I would never tell you to do under any other circumstance because this is actually important. I want you, to stop right now. And go to the official Bittersweet Candy Bowl website- NOW DON’T CLICK ANYTHING YET, DO NOT LOOK AT THE FRONT PAGE! Okay, DON’T read the comic. Glance at the pretty colors, but do not even read the words. I’m going to guide you through this, okay? this next part may be tricky but I need to be particular about this. Some people reading this may not have actually read BCB, so we have to be VERY delicate, and VERY particular about this. This is a live bomb we are handling and I do not want to be responsible for any of you who have not been caught in this hellhole, to fall for it now! So, keep your eyes firmly at the top of your screen. Where it says Bittersweet Candy Bowl, right underneath there are going to be a few words. You are going to click the word “Archive”, now this is very important there are going to be a list of chapters DO NOT CLICK ANY OF THEM YET! You are going to count the numbers and scroll down the list until you find number 85. Total Recall. If you see a banner that says “Volume Six” you have scrolled too far! Calmly but firmly scroll a little further up and you should see Chapter 85. Now you will notice that under that chapter’s description there are a few titled links. You are going to click the link that says “Blinding Light” it should take you to page 25 of 42. Click on that comic page, and you will see what makes this scene with all its splash pages… blows every other excuse for “pacing splash pages” out of the water. It is fantastic. It’s minimal, and it’s Taeshi at her most brilliant. It’s dramatic pacing in a webcomic done right. It’s Taeshi utilizing her artistic talent to perfectly set a scene. The stark contrast of pages filled with word bubbles to a hard splash page of white ruggedly brushed to fade into black. The realistic watercolors working in perfect comparison to the cartoonish artstyle we had been accustomed to in Volume 5. Fading softly into white again to reintroduce us to the cartoonish style in a bouquet of flowers. The use of longer vertical pages to turn what could’ve been three splash pages of nothing into only two pages! It doesn’t waste your time, it perfectly itself and puts you into the place of Paulo’s waning consciousness. And we see the light at the end of the tunnel.
it’s SO good! There’s a reason it’s the one thing people remember from The Paulo Show. The way this scene is handled, perfectly exemplifies what Taeshi is capable of. This was what made me realize that Taeshi wasn’t good. She was great. She was an artist, and she is able to do fantastic work. Even when the characters look like munchkins, she could turn it serious and make you shut up without missing a beat. I mean think about it. Paulo just got Charlie St. Cloud’d one of the oldest tricks in the book, we get baited with Lucy coming back when we know that wasn’t happening. It was bait to make us think Lucy was there to see Paulo when even back then I knew that it wasn’t just for him. It was because her brother was in the car too when it got wrecked, and so her family probably insisted she come see him. But none of that mattered. Because this scene was fucking PERFECT.
AND THE AFTER CARE IS GOOD TOO! We get everyone showing up to Paulo’s bedside and showing that they care, it’s filled with some well-needed comic relief that much like the rest of The Paulo Show, is really fun and sweet.
And it’s capped off by a talk with Tess explaining how like Paulo she too has progressed and moved on from who she was in that last prom chapter. She shows that she’s in a better place now, and is able to move on. Yeah, it’s kinda forced and it’s blatant exposition to explain her lack of presence in the last two volumes but… It doesn’t matter.
10/10
It was perfect

One of the worst feelings in the world has to be the feeling like you've run out of what you love.
Like, genuinely, I think that one of the reasons I read webnovel so often is due to it's usually interminable lengths. As a genre, I'm not sure many things run much longer.
Like, don't get me wrong, I love the art form, but at a certain point all of the art that hits your sweet spot of like, 3 things you love, runs out. And then you move on to 2 things. 1 and a half. 1 thing. And you start expanding definitions but the love you had for the medium feels strained. You're not really getting what you wanted, and the new stuff isn't scratching your itches and isn't as well written.
It's depressing, and it happens anytime you find an art form. I remembered thinking 'i'll never run out of porn to my preference, it's the internet!' and that might've been true at the time, but over the years I've discovered more about myself and found interests I never knew I'd had. And I could never go back to not knowing it.
It's like eating food from a fairy court. People always talk about how it imposes a magical brand on your soul that assigns you to be owned by the court but I've never thought of it like that. I always figured it was just otherworldly cuisine, so mind-breakingly delicious that, assuming you don't fall apart right then and there, all food from the human world turns to ash in your mouth. nothing is sweet or savory or good any more, you're ruined and can never be who you were before.
So now that I've tasted the best that life has to offer, what point lies in eating another bite beyond base sustenance? A lot of the pornography and webnovel I consume nowadays feels like eating packing peanuts, lacking the punch and sweetness of earlier meals, only filling space. Novels that are just mindless fighting and static characters. Pornography that fulfills the basic requirements and nothing more. It's hard to live on knowing that the best of your hobbies is behind you.
Therein lies a crossroads many come to.
Become an artist and be the change you want to see in the world for people with your interests,
Or find something else to do while you wait for someone else to pick up that mantle.
and as someone without writing or illustrating skill or desire, that's a nauseating choice. You'll never be able to write a story you can read for the first time, and I think that's heartbreaking.
...
...Or I guess commission someone to make it but do I look like a STEM furry? ...don't answer that.
