On top of being robbed of so much Juke content weâll never get, what I think about alot is how Juke would have been approached more if it went further.
One of the (many) reasons I love jatp so much is it makes me believe their characters are real, that they have background, they have their own goals and ambitions to them, theyâre fleshed out.
That moment of Flynn going âmy girls got a crush and his name is Lukeâ and Julie going âwhat no?! Lukeâs a ghostđł.â And Flynn saying âa cute ghostâ and Julie giving in and saying ââŠwith a perfect smileâșïžâ and adding that Luke is âcute airâ which implies she has indeed given this Luke crush idea some thought.
That moment of just two best friends talking about the others potential crush like thatâs such a good moment bc I genuinely believe that I am watching these two genuine besties just have that kind of talk with one another bc that happens!
Like that moment we have with our friends when theyâre like âhey I got something to tell you đâ or they approach you like âso⊠umm⊠Iâve been kind of noticing your behavior lately around this person.â Itâs the realistic little things like that which is why I appreciate this show so much.
Julie having the line of âwhat no! Lukeâs a ghost!â Means so much that, on top of acknowledging âhey heâs got a cute smile, and he himself is cuteâ she also acknowledged ââŠhe is a ghost thoughâŠâ but then our Julie being who she is (we love her for it) went âbut he still do be cute though đ„°â like this is a genuine teen girl in high school having a crush
And then later on when Reggie and Alex bring up how Luke and Julie ooze chemistry (and the way that throughout the show when Julie and Luke are being cute and them, the looks that we see Reggie and Alex give like Juke and then each other is so good bc I genuinely believe like âyeah these boys are all friends with one another so of course theyâd react that way to their other friend showing an interest in their fellow friendâ) Lukeâs like âno come on I have chemistry with everyone I sing withâ HE DOES THE SAME THING JULIE DID WHEN THE EXACT SAME TOPIC EAS BROUGHT UP TO HER! (Soulmates your honor!)
Him denying it, like Julie did, implies too that he also had the thinking of ââŠshe is alive though and Iâm notâ (I mean me personally I feel like Luke didnât truly realize he liked her until later on even if there were signs earlier, just bc he seems like the kind of person where like music was his absolute everything like even if the Sunset Curve fangirls were always like âomg Luke is amazing đâ, I just get the vibe that he would never really notice the advances towards him bc he is just so consumed in music and that is his whole existence, so when Reggie and Alex see that Luke appears to be falling for Julie itâs a big deal bc theyâre probably like âLuke has NEVER shown any interest ever so the fact that a girl has replaced music in his life THIS IS A MASSIVE DEALâ)
And then the moment when theyâre on Julieâs porch and she tries to hold his hand but ya know CANT (huge what a gut punched) and then she awkwardly looks away and heâs like ââŠthis is an interesting little relationship you and I haveâ and theyâre just there for a moment just looking and smiling at each other (THEYâRE FLIRTING SO MUCH WITHOUT SAYING ANY WORDS UGH TAKE ME đ©)
I am sat there genuinely believing that these are two teenagers who even though they know theyâre not *supposed* to feel a way about each other, they still do. Like that scene is their confession to one another and itâs so sweet and genuine bc in that moment where Julie tries to hold his hand, theyâre brought back to reality as to what they are and yet, they canât help but still like one another and appreciate each other bc of what the other person has changed so much in their life.
AND THEN, that scene in the beginning of the last episode how Julie asks to talk to Luke (and Reggie and Alex immediately are like âoop leave them be đ theyâre having a momentâ being the greatest friends that they are) and theyâre both standing there, in each others presence, it takes a moment for Julie to say what she wants to but theyâre just two kids who ended up in each others lives and they know they like each other but they know they canât act on those feelings yet they still just have this love for each other is so enduring and charming. The way Luke tells her âanything Julie you know thatâ MAKES ME MELT like ugh đ© their dynamic and friendship has grown so much with each other from episode 1 to like now and itâs so just ugh it gets me
When I think how Juke could have been approached if we had gotten a chance, I would have loved to see the new like âglowing touchâ development and how that would impact their dynamic. (I just imagine Reggie just hugs Julie all the time bc he can (he just seems like such a hugger and I feel like heâd give good onesđ„ș) and Alex also will gives her side hugs (they just take advantage of being able to physically touch her bc they donât know how long theyâre able to do it for with their new ghost development)) I feel like Luke and Julie would just be a bit apprehensive since the hand holding thing on the porch, and maybe their hug was just a one time thing.
Would have loved to see Carlos referring to Luke as âJulieâs boyfriendâ (he was there for edge of great and stand tall THERES NO WAY heâs thinking anything of than âthe sleeveless one is indeed my sisters boyfriendâ) would be extra great too with like Luke being in the room and Carlos just says that and Julie quickly trying to make him not talk about it bc itâs embarrassing đ her just being like âCarlos, heâs a ghostâ and him being like ââŠhey with you having a boyfriend are you going to have less time with Dad and I bc youâll be busy kissing him?â And Julieâs face just goes pale as Luke takes the time to take himself out of room meanwhile his face his like bright red
Would have loved to see when Carrieâs redemption is happening and itâs Julie and Carrie and Carrieâs like âsooooo đ Iâve seen how you look at your guitaristâ and she immediately tries to shut it down but Carrie is like âJules, we may not have been that close in the past year and some but weâve known each other for how long? I can see your tells!â
I just think a lot about how this ship, even though theyâre not meant to like each other yet they do and still care about each other, would have been approached more if we got the chance
#I just wanted to yap I apologize đ#OMG I forget to mention the locker scene âŠprobably for the best Iâve been yapping too much already no one wants more of that đ#probably could have been saved for a juke juedi but everyday is juke juedi to me#I know I kept repeating how I like genuinely believe these characters are real people but bc there are so many times where fictional#things like youâre watching it and are like âthat would never happenâ or âno one would do that irlâ but with jatp there is not one point#at all where your brain goes to that which speaks volumes with how good the writing is and how good of performances are in it like UGH#I LOVE IT (also I took a âfilm as artâ class and in that thereâs a term called âwillfullness of disbeliefâ where you as the viewer know#that these are actors playing charcaters and theyâre on a set HOWEVER in the media you are viewing you are willing to put that aside and#view it as taking in the set as an actual place and the actors ARE their characters)#in Jatp it makes me believe that like all our gang are real people bc of how well theyâre portrayed and written itâs just so cool to me đ„°#julie and the phantoms#jatp#jatp netflix#jatp julie#jatp luke#juke#jatp juke#jukebox

I just want to say I love your blog- I came across it last night and completely went down the rabbit hole and completely convinced of the MS/DT love. I wanted to know what you thought of this video
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8p7x9jV/
Even the mere mention of his name that is not appearing to be about Michael Sheen, David makes it about him and lights up. What do you think about how David reacts in interviews, shows etc where either David brings him up on his own or he comes up and he reacts? I see his demeanor change almost instantly. I feel that people donât see as much of this coming from David and even though itâs not as obvious as Michael, itâs really there.
Hi there! Well thank you so much for the kind words about my blog--I'm always happy to know folks like what I am doing and are enjoying my ridiculous posts. I really appreciate it!
That video you linked to is a great one, and one I have talked about previously on my blog. I'll put my gifs up here so we have a visual reference:
The first thing (of course) that stood out to me was this random fan mentioning his friend, and immediately David thought of Michael. Because there are a lot of Michaels in the world, after all. Michael Caine. Michael Myers. George Michael, even. And yet David's mind went straight to Michael Sheen--his Michael--and that seems so telling.
I also have a tag on my blog for the many instances of David and Michael bringing each other up when the other isn't there, as that is also one of my favorite things. There are a lot of wonderful examples there, but I think one that is really worth checking out is a podcast David was on two years ago with fellow actor Paapa Essiedu. Paapa brought up Michael earlier in the interview, but later on it's David who brings him up, and there is such impossible fondness in his voice when he talks about him.
(I think this also ties into something I've discussed a few times on my blog, which is David feeling more comfortable opening up when doing an audio interview where we can't see him, versus a video interview where we can. A supposition that rings particularly true in the case of David's own podcast episode where he interviewed Michael in 2019.)
One of the most memorable things David said in the interview with Michael is, "You're an honest version of how I'm feeling." Five years ago, this seemed especially true because David was so much more reserved than Michael--less obvious, as you said--but in no way did that mean his feelings were less strong. What we see now in David's reactions when Michael is brought up--that shift in demeanor, that complete softness he emanates in a way he doesn't with others--is the externalization of something that was always there on the inside.
In that vein, I want to make sure your second Ask doesn't go unaddressed, as the NTAs are another vivid example of David's softness around Michael, and to date, still one of the most special nights in the fandom. I've written about a lot of my thoughts on it in detail, so I invite you to check out my #NTA Awards 2021 tag for a whole lot of analysis and discourse.
I hope this helps to answer your questions. Thanks for writing in! x

ok i'm going to allow myself one indulgent psychoanalytic post about the club under the read more
ok so there are a couple of very interesting parts of the athl*tic article about this whole thing that stood out to me. i trust the writer quite a bit re: sources
first this bit which i honestly had kind of forgotten about because thomas got in form immediately after & then played a key role in big wins against union & p$g. but reading between the lines it does seem like not too many players were big fans... and it feels especially loud that thomas has not posted anything yet. i've only seen leon and benji post? and benji's was more about dino than anything
secondly... i had not heard that bit about cancelo but like. it's interesting to see this written out because it definitely makes it seem like our mentality issues had a lot to do with players being hyped enough to show up for big games and high enough quality to win them but... idk. this is making me feel like perhaps it was just as big of a problem as i feared in february.
and... yeah. this kind of is the nail in the coffin. we were never really able to sustain performances, and really no one was consistently good? sure you can point to big development in certain players, but. how do we know it would have stuck? i would have said serge, leroy really thrived last year but look at now.
in any case, the article concludes by basically being like, the feeling at the club isn't actually negative towards nagelsmann, but maybe he wasn't quite ready and maybe he'll be back. honigstein also points out: "Chances are his next club will be the beneficiaries of that maturing process. Bayern, though, can never wait. The only long-term strategy Germanyâs most insatiable club have ever signed up to is their unequivocal demand for short-term success." which i think is what a lot of us have been upset about. but idk maybe. maybe we love bayern because it is insatiable and we don't tolerate less than the best and... maybe this is the negative that comes with it
#idk came out of this feeling much better about the situation#mostly because it kind of confirms what i was worried about the whole time#that the players really didnt believe in nagelsmann and that was the source of a lot of mentality issues#the article also points out that team morale was hurt by the club sticking by nagelsmann so much too#which... yeah#so. idk. we'll see#but i will say i do think. thomas's silence speaks volumes#i'm curious if he'll post anything tomorrow re: tuchel

okay i don't have anything smart to add i just genuinely love that these seemingly trivial jokes are actually an important part of his character. we see it throughout the entire manga, how he pushes aside his own frustration and discomfort to accommodate everyone else's and avoid needless confrontation- another example off the top of my head would be the barometz chapter in which he slowly gets frustrated with izutsumi but still tries his best to talk some sense into her calmly and soundly.
and in contrast, there are very few times he expresses his anger and hurt towards others, and it usually takes a lot for him to finally lose his patience and control.
i mean, even with kabru he tried to be polite despite the circumstances until the guy said the one thing that triggers an immense sense of shame, hurt and rage in laios. and you know, the manga does say it quite clearly early on. when we are introduced to namari and then to shuro, laios acts all friendly and shows his respect and trust in them despite how things ended between them, and everyone else gets frustrated with him for acting so strange- why are you the one who tries so hard to pacify the rest when you should be the angriest?
and they don't understand him. they don't know him well enough to be able to understand, but we as readers get to see during the manga that they aren't wrong to question him- he does, in fact, feel all those ugly emotions. and it's when the winged lion finally confronts him that we see to what extent these feelings he buried so deep go, and suddenly all those funny little moments where he sometimes pretends to be mr nice guy speak volumes about his character. honestly, ryoko kui is a master at using jokes in order to define important character traits and this one doesn't fail to amaze me.
and laios's hatred and rage and deep scars he can't get over aren't shown explicitly during most of these moments i mentioned before, but now you realize there are 26 years of emotional baggage to all of them and they sting. he is angry but he can't say shit, what difference would it make? it won't make his friends choose him instead of themselves when he needed them most, and it won't help his party get any farther. of course, this logic doesn't apply to them- they are absolutely allowed to get angry and it's fine to get mad at him, he can take that.
so after finishing the series it's so clear that he tries his best to avoid clashing with others not just due to the current circumstances and him needing to be a reliable leader but also because he knows that people don't even like him when he tries to show his good sides and hide all the rest, so who the hell would tolerate his rage and despair? who would stay after realizing that he is so deeply flawed he doesn't even like his own being?
but he does get mad. he can't help it, and sometimes it gets out of control and now everyone knows. and it's funny, isn't it? that most of those moments ended up bringing him closer to others. shuro admitting he is envy of him and actually becoming the friend laios thought he was all along, fighting for his sake and waiting for him to come back- believing in him even after he turned into a monster and searching for him the way he couldn't bring himself to do for falin when he learned of what became of her- or kabru being pushed to just let it all out because he couldn't bluff his way out of this one and get to laios any other way, so now they are even. they are both horribly honest with each other and they both choose to stay. a weird way of getting to know each other, but it is what it is.
it's simply... the more laios let himself just be, the deeper his relationships grew. and there's intimacy in being your ugly, weak and furious self around someone and them not leaving you. feeling safe enough to let it be known you are hurt and angry. and he knows that now, too.
#he still has a lot of growth to do but at least he has people he can grow with đ#dungeon meshi#laios touden

you get a little too turnt during girls night, and logan comes to your rescue.
CW: heavily suggestive, profanity, Logan's your white knight, Ororo's gettin lit, men are creeps, you're actually drunk as a skunk, etc.
"You guys got together?! Why didn't you tell me?!" Ororo gasped, loudly, sitting up straight in her seat.
Your brows furrowed, eyes widening at her volume, a few passing party-goers sharing concerned looks.
"Say it louder. I don't think the rest of the city heard you..." you grumbled, face burning as you took a sip from your strawberry daiquiri.
She sat next to you on the little leather couch situated at the back of the club near the bar, which had began to trickle with activity.
The three of you had been there for only about thirty minutes, the buzz of the night starting to pick up, the dance floor packed with dancers and drinks flowing.
And the eyes, still staring.
"Ignore her, (n/n)," Jean smiled, kindly, as she rested a reassuring hand on your shoulder. "I think it's sweet you two took it at your own pace. It shows how serious you both are about this."
The three of you were having easy conversation, drinking and gabbing about whatever came to mind, when you and Logan were suddenly brought up.
And Ororo nearly died of shock when she found out you two were official.
"And speaking of seriousness... I believe we have an audience..."
Another group of three in particular, whose gazes were piercing you and your friends from across the way.
The three intense pairs of eyes belonged to three men in their best designer.
They each had their own outstanding feature: the tallest one sitting on the right had long, black hair, while the one on the left had arms roped in tattoos and lip piercings, the final one having a buzz cut and a snaggle-toothed smile.
Their lustful stares all but ignored by the two sitting next to you, your mind preoccupied with downing your second daiquiri that soon turned into a third.
You barely paid the men any mind, already knowing a man ten times hotter than all of them combined.
You actually missed him a whole damn lot.
You both were supposed to have a date night, but he got called last minute to round up Rogue and her friends who were causing havoc at some far off arcade.
So the girls dragged you out to the club, much to your protest.
'The kids just had to choose tonight of all nights...'
Ororo scoffed, gulping down another jell-O shot, "Waiting on him to come?" she chuckled, the flashing club lights making her light eyes sparkle.
You flushed in your mini dress, feeling hot despite the blasting AC and your exposed skin.
"You'll be waiting a while," she sighed, crossing her smooth legs over one another. "I heard Scott over the phone... those kids are in serious trouble."
You'd be lying if you said you weren't disappointed that he wasn't there, resting his hand at the small of your back, giving you those lustful stares on the dance floor, and complimenting your outfits in his own Logan way.
You'd done so much to make sure you looked hotter than hot, too.
You had raided your closet and pulled out a short, backless mini dress that made your legs look longer and showed off the curve of your spine sliding down towards your ass.
You loved, loved, loved itâhow beautiful the black fabric looked against your skin; how sexy it made you feel.
Not to mention it was one of Logan's favorites.
He'd torn it off you many times.
Combined with your stiletto heels, fresh mani-pedi, the perfume adorning your wrists and the back of your knees, and hair that gracefully caressed your shoulders, you felt like a damn vixen.
Ororo sat up, taking your hand in hers, "No sense in sitting around while you wait, eh?"
She smirked at you, mischief in her eyes.
"Let's dance."
You paused a moment, hesitant.
But in that instant, those three daiquiris hit you like a truck, and all inhibitions went out the window.
'Fuck it.'
You stood up, chugging the last of your drink before taking her hand.
"Let's do it."
Famous last words.

Smoothly, you glided your fingers up your body, swaying your hips in rhythm with the beat as Ororo danced with one of the men.
You two had been dancing so well, you called the attention of the entire club. And with you about seven daiquiris in, it felt as if the music was coursing through your veins and melding with your bones.
The men of the establishment were hounding you both relentlesslyâJean having escaped to the bar to strike up some friendly conversation with the bartenderâand even with your inebriated state, you fought them off vigorously, smacking away hands and returning advances with a sharp tongue.
Though the novelty was beginning to fade, and the urge to go home had began to set in.
As if on que, your phone began to buzz, taking your attention away from your thoughts.
"Hold up! I'm getting a call!" you laughed. "I'll be right back, 'Ro!"
She gave you a wink before you went stumbling off the dance floor, tugging a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
You decided to go to the nearest ladies' room, leaning against the wall where the long line started, before flipping open your phone.
You looked down at the caller ID, grinning to see the name of your favorite guy on the screen.
"Heyyyy, Logan," you sang into the phone with a drunk giggle.
"There you are," Logan let out a sigh of relief from the other side of the phone. "I've been tryin' to reach ya. I just finished roundin' up the kids and droppin' 'em off back home, so I'm free for the rest of the night if ya still wanna go out."
"Oh!" you chuckled, "Sorry!"
As you paused, Logan suddenly became confused.
"Where the hell are you? It's so loud, I can barely hear ya."
You placed one foot up on the wall, leaning your back flush against the cool tiles. "'Roro 'n' Jean took me to the club 'n' these guys tried to join us," you slurred. "Oh, they bought us drinks, too. And one said he liked my dress. He wasn't as good looking as you."
"You wearin' the backless one?" he asked, sounding intrigued.
You giggled giddily in response, finding humor in his quiet curse.
"Damn... ya had to pull that one out?"
"Oh, you should see me, Logan... I look gooood," you smiled, looking down at yourself. "But it's not the same... s'not as fun without you."
You lowered your foot back down to the ground and crossed your arm over your midsection, suddenly feeling cold and small.
"I miss you, Logan," you said, quietly. "Could you pick me up, please?"
His chest warmed at your tone, unable to fight the smirk on his face.
Despite the fact that you were absolutely sloshed, your mind still drifted to him, and even missed him when he was away.
It was adorable.
"Sure, sweetheart. Where areâ?" "Wait!" you shrieked, a smile blooming on your face as you got quiet.
Logan cocked a brow.
'Huh?'
It was your favorite song.
"Logan! It's my song! I'll be right back!" you smile into the phone before hanging up, scrambling back to Ororo.
When you shimmeyed back onto the dance floor, she happily greeted you, moving in sync with the rhythm as you began your own moves.
"Oooo, what's that?" you asked, pointing at the glass she was holding.
It was orange and topped with ice and chopped oranges and strawberries, reminding you of a tequila sunrise.
"Want it?" she giggled, holding it out for you to take.
Which you gladly did, tossing it back lie it was water, humming approvingly at the taste as you licked the remnants off your lips.
The two men next to her were close to falling out from the scene.
"Fuck," one of them groaned. "Can you do that to me?"
You turned to them, brows furrowed. "Fuck off. My guy's gonna be here anyyyyy second."
Ororo gasped as she threw an arm around you, pulling you close to her perfume-soaked neck, "He's coming? That's great!"
You both cheered together, throwing your hands in the air as you continued to dance.
"C'mon," a man smirked from behind you. "What's he doing leaving a pretty lil' thing like you alone?"
Your face fell, expression annoyed as you turned to him, "Didn't I tell you to go somewhere? He's gonna show up sooon..."
The man had gotten closer, so close that you could see him lick his lips, expectantly.
He scoffed, leering down at you under the strobe lights, "But he ain't here, is he?"
"I wouldn't put money on it, bub," Logan replied from behind him.
Your eyes lit up like stars as soon as you laid eyes on your dark, handsome bodyguard.
He stood there behind the man with his thick, leather-clad arms crossed over his broad chest, which was covered by his white tee.
And he looked less than pleased.
"Logan!" you smiled, moving to stand by his side like a magnet.
The man turned to face him, watching as Logan snaked an arm around your waist, pulling you close.
"This is the boyfriend?" he laughed, amused.
His words hardened Logan's expression tenfold, and it took everything in you not to giggle.
"Yeah, I am. And why the fuck are you still here?"
His words forced the man's expression to meld into one of frustration, and you bit back an amused smile at the sight.
You were drunk out of your mind, but you knew better than to interfere.
The man swallowed thickly, "I was justâ"
"Harrassin' my woman."
You felt your heart flutter at the nickname.
He'd been calling you that for a while, but somehow it always felt like the first time.
"I didn't know she was yoursâ"
In a flash, his Logan's fist was up, his claws were on display and right in front of the man's face, scaring the shit out of him.
"I don't like repeating myself," he spat, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Fuck. Off."
You both watched the man scatter, eyes wide as he scrambled toward the bar.
Damn.
'What a bitch...'
"You alright?" Logan asked, taking off his leather jacket as he glared around the room, taking notice of the other leering men on the dance floor. "This place is full of fuckin' sleazeballs."
You shrugged, running a hand through your hair, "Eh, I managed."
Wordless, he handed over his jacket, your nose wrinkled in confusion.
"What's that for?"
"You're shivering, (n/n)."
You looked down at yourself, realizing that you were, indeed, shivering.
"Oh."
"C'mon," he sighed, draping the jacket over your shoulders before resting his hand at the small of your back, steering you toward the exit. "I think that's enough fun for one night."
Glancing back at Ororo, he gave a small look, slightly concerned.
"Scott's on his way for you two... You gonna be good?"
"Tipsy, but okay!" she gave him a thumbs up, along with a little wink. "Have fun, you two!"
He ignored the innuendo, but nodded, going back to ushering you out the back door.
"I missed you, Logan," you confessed, a slight whine to your voice as you practically clung to him.
"I know you did, sweetheart," he sighed, approaching one of Cyclops' cars. "Let's get you home."
The moment you hung up the phone, he sped over to the club, breaking about fifteen different traffic laws in the process.
An annoyance he decided to deal with the next day.
Without warning, you grabbed him, shoving him up against a wall of the alley you were in, interlocking your fingers as your free hand traced mindless shapes in his chest.
"You look so good, Logan," you purred, eyeing him up and down with hungry eyes, heating him from the inside out. "So good."
Suddenly, your lips attached to his neck, lazily peppering the flesh with kisses and pecks, with the occasional nip.
"(n/n)... you're drunk," Logan stated, moreso for himself, as he weakly tried to pry you off.
"I'd do this anyway," you grinned into his skin, pulling back to look at him, gaze half-lidded. "You look so sexy..."
Slowly, your lips curled into a hazy, loving smile, your eyes staring up at him like he was the only thing in the world.
Fuck...
You'd think he was about to go into cardiac arrest.
'This woman's gonna be the death of me...'
"What's wrong?" you asked, lips pouty and eyes glassy as you looked up at him, your expression one of hurt. "You're not touching me..."
"Doll," he sighed, voice slightly strained. "As gorgeous as you look... and as much as I wanna pin you against this wall... you're fuckin' hammered. And I'd like to feel you up when you actually know what yer doin'."
He pulled back to see your reaction, only to find you were already out like a light, softly snoring and drooling all over his shirt.
A soft smile fell onto his lips at the adorable sight, the man brushing some of your hair out your face before scooping you up in his arms, pressing a long kiss on your forehead.
'Somethin' else...'

FORSAKEN BY ALL THE GODS.
info: prince!kaiser x f!reader, enemies to lovers, fantasy au, arranged marriage, eventual smut. afab reader w she/her pronouns. reader has an established backstory and is not weak, readerâs appearance is nondescript. reader calls him âmihyaâ as they get closer. oliver and karasu are bffs in this lol. maybe some angst if you squint. happy ending!! plot is balanced with comedic moments.Â
synopsis: You will be killed by the one you love most. That line from his prophecy has haunted Kaiser his whole life. Against it all, you stand before him. Will you be the one to rewrite fate itself?
word count: 14k (please donât let this scare you, i promise my writing is efficient)Â
a/n: this might be my magnum opus, i promise i poured my best dialogue and writing into this and it shows. if you consider reading like so seriously i will love you forever. also the smut is huge just like his cock <3 or my heart
Kaiser has been forsaken thrice fold. First, by his parents. His mother is said to be a beautiful woman that captured the hearts of all. His father could not bear her ultimate betrayal: leaving, causing him to wither away to nothing.
Kaiser guesses that this aspect of her runs in his blood after all.
The second and third time he is forsaken happen at once.
On the night that Kaiser is, by royal decree, anointed successor to the throne, he does as tradition dictates. He approaches the golden temple at the top of a mountain and mirrors the prophet within, sitting cross-legged in front of them.
The prophet gazes into the distance. And then, like a man possessed, they speak.
Lone Emperor who covets the throne, You will be killed by the one you love most.
Kaiser swears he feels even his heart stop at that. Cold rushes through him, the chill of it colder than anything he had felt at the front lines of war.
Forsaken by all the Gods â
The prophet stops, staring into the distance with a frown.
The silence is deafening. Noa, despite tradition, interrupts the ceremony and approaches the prophet, clicking his fingers in front of their face.
âThe prophecy?â
The prophetâs eyes widen with fear. âI- I cannot.â
âWhat, are you afraid?â Kaiser scoffs. âThe prophecy is bad as it is, it canât get much worse than that.â
âNo, I mean I cannot. The â the Fates! Theyâve stopped speaking to me!â
âExcuse me?â Kaiserâs scowl is evident, and Noa swears that in any other situation, Kaiser wouldâve moved for his sword and set his blade ablaze.
It speaks volumes that all he does is stare right at the prophet, fear barely contained in his eyes.
The prophet grips at Noaâs hand, forcing his gaze. âMy lord, please believe me. This â in the history... it has never happened before. I swear it.â
Noa whistles, and the guards outside come rushing in. âSeize them,â he commands, and they stare at each other for a moment.
To seize and capture that which is considered holy? Is that not blasphemy?
Noa cares little, almost removing his sword from his sheath to do it himself. âWhat are you all waiting for?â
âMy lord! I swear to you!â The prophet grapples towards Noa in spite of their hands being held behind their back, the guards barely catching them from falling to their knees. âThe fact that I would admit this at all shows my loyalty to you!â The prophet gasps, breath coming fast.â I could have pretended, could have given a false prophecy. I did not. Thatâs the choice I made. That is all the proof you need.â
Itâs convincing enough that Noa hesitates, taking a deep breath in. But he sees in the corner of his eye Kaiserâs state, sitting in the kind of stillness that you see before a battle, bent over at the bottom of the altar.Â
At that sight, Noa makes a single motion with his hand for the prophet to be taken away.
The room clears.
âKaiser, I ââÂ
Whatever comforting remark Noa might have made dies in his throat, because Kaiser laughs, a bitter and broken sound, that he would in the future rarely have his walls down to ever reveal again. He hides his eyes behind his hand and he laughs.
âOf course, my prophecy would come to something like this.â He drags his hand down across his face. âForsaken by all the Gods.â
âIt doesnât matter.â Noa says it with conviction, and itâs enough for Kaiser to face him.
âMaster?â
âYou will still be the successor to the throne. As is your destiny.â
âMy destiny?â Kaiser jabs a thumb to the now-empty seating. âWe just heard my destiny.â
âWhat the gods have declared has nothing to do with me. I declare you the next to rule. That is all.â
Noa presses a hand to the crown of Kaiserâs head. âNo one will know what transpired here. A tragic prophecy is a given. It is meant to be a trial of sorts, after all. Mine, too, was unpleasant. Though not nearly as dire.â
âWhat was yours?â
Noa breathes in deeply. âA twisted rivalry with a twisted man. One that was to be all-consuming to me.â
Kaiser scoffs. âA rivalry. Just train and win.â
Noa lets the comment pass, staring out of the temple and past the mountains. âThe rivalry came and went. At the time, I felt it was the worst. I could not eat, sleep, or breathe without the thought of what he would do next on my mind. But I was lucky, that it passed.â
He motions for Kaiser to take his arm, bringing him back up to standing. âYours will pass too, Iâm sure of it.â
Kaiser waves his hand, gesturing at Noa to let go of him. Itâs easy to say, easy to have faith when it is not your life that balances on the precipice.
Forsaken thrice: once, by his parents. Another, by the Gods. And third, by his own future lover. Kaiser curses the Gods and the Weaver for such a fate, for something possibly worse than death is looming over him.
You will be killed by the one you love most. That line has haunted his very being to this day.
~
The people do not know what causes their successor to turn so cold, as biting and harsh as winter itself. His quicksilver smile rattles bones, his sword is cutting like blood in snow.
The prophecy is on a need-to-know basis, and Kaiser has never been crueler. He trains, harder than ever. Enough that when an unmovable sword is found at the rocks of the ocean, he trains until he is able to pull it from the bank, wield it with one hand. Rumor has said it might take three men to carry, or that the night sky that shimmers across it is strong enough to kill even a god. His sole retrieval of it is proof to the people of his strength and stature, but compassion and love are rarely a topic of conversation with his name. Â
He focuses on his work. He does not take lovers. He barely sees others as friends. And he most certainly does not take a bride.
~
You appear before the throne and you do not bow. The scowl on Kaiserâs face at this says enough.
âYou dare-â
âYou have the sword.â You ignore Kaiser entirely, setting your sights completely on Noa.
The silence that follows is as large and wide as the ocean, but your gaze is sharp and keen, never faltering once until Noa speaks.
âWater sorceress,â Noa addresses you coldly, âor thatâs what you told our people.â
âYes.â
âYou are not the only sorceress of water. Yet your power is second to none.â Noa stands, stepping down the stairs with heavy, thumping footfalls until heâs standing right in front of you. âThey call you the waterâs mistress, in the neighboring lands.â
âThey do.â
He begins to circle you, like a hunter might before striking a deer. Standing next to you, his deep voice clear right next to your ear, he eyes you curiously. âTheyâre all wrong, arenât they?â
You donât answer. Noa takes that as answer enough.
âA power like that. Do you think me stupid?â He observes you, checks you visually for weapons, watches your hands to ensure you donât call magic forth.
âDemigod.â He about spits the word from behind you, and yet all you do is tilt your head to catch him in your eyeâs view.
âYou are as well-informed as they say.â
âI am as logical as they come.â
âWe are the same in that regard, then. So letâs get straight to the point.âÂ
Noa returns back to the throne, seemingly satisfied with his observing, gesturing at you to continue.Â
âYou have something belonging to me. A sword, heavier than most. Ancient, yet sharp. It is said to look like it contains a night sky.â
âThe blade youâre speaking of was found by us, it is ours to keep.â
In the short silence that follows, Kaiser swears there must be irritation on your end, but you donât show it. Instead, you take a deep breath in.
âThe blade was thrown out of the heavens and spat out into this realm during a war between Gods.â
âIs that so? And how can you prove itâs yours?â
âI can wield it, unlike your people, who do not have the means to wield a sword as such.â You state simply.
Like rose grown blue, the impossible becomes possible. You can feel the divinity and the power that comes off the sword in waves the minute itâs unsheathed, your eyes widening. The ring of it is as familiar to you as your own skin, how could you not have felt its presence sooner? But Kaiser is fast, much faster than you expected, faster than he should be with a sword of that weight, that magnitude. Before you can turn your head, cold silver kisses your neck.
âThis blade, sorceress?â He comes around from behind you, stalks around you just like his Master had, sword pointed like it may just draw blood from you at any moment. When you finally see his face, his sneer is wicked.
He takes pride in your wide-eyed gaze, your sharpened attention, but the lack of fear on your part grates at him. God-killing, they had called the blade. Yet you donât shy away at all.
âSay we return the sword to its rightful owner,â Noa calls back your attention, âwhat would you offer us in return?â
âOffer in return? This sword does not belong to you. It is returned, as it should be.â
âThis sword, with its divinity, could harm even a god.â Kaiser presses the blade closer to your neck, gleaming metal against your skin. âIt protects this nation. What if the gods forsake us? If we return it to you, what would protect us against them then?â
âFor what reason would they do such a thing?â
Kaiser barks a laugh. âOf course, there would be no criticisms from one of them. Water sorceress, demigod. Tell us, who are you, truly? What do your people call you, up there? No matter.â He lowers the sword, but leaves it unsheathed, its heavy weight balanced in his palm. A threat that at any moment, he may change his mind. âThose titles mean nothing to me. I have been forsaken, demigod. So know, I trust not even the gods.â
You sigh. Foreseeing a troublesome future has its cons, you suppose. Your queen would smile if you told her such.
âYou ask for something with power in equal to or more than the blade. You asked me for my titles. I shall give you both.â The sleeves of your dress shimmer as you move them, and itâs in this moment that Kaiser notices they are not sleeves but water itself, cradled around your wrists like armor. âThe Gods had bestowed on me the title Sword Maiden, and I offer myself and my services to you until the end of your line.â
That shocks the room like a bucket of cold water.
You turn to Kaiser, who stands beside the throne. You step forward once, and water rushes underneath that step, descending in waves over the floor as if it goes through it, a magic they have never witnessed prior. âYou say the Gods have forsaken you? Let my presence be proof to you that they still watch over you.â
Kaiser scowls, âWhat sort of cheap trick is this?â
âMy domain is truth. I cannot lie.â
âOh, please.â
Your eyes narrow at him. âWould it help for you to press your sword against my neck once more?â
A goddess who cannot lie. Noaâs faith lies in logic, but heâs not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. His gaze flits between Kaiser and you before he seems to settle a decision in his mind.
âUntil the end of Kaiserâs line.â Noa negotiates.
Kaiserâs gaze snaps to Noa. âYouâre taking her up on this?â
You almost frown. âFine.â
Noa quirks an eyebrow at you. âThat simple?â
âHuman lives move quickly.â
Kaiser eyes you curiously. âWhat happens when you lie?â
You blink at him. Once. Twice. Is that⊠almost a flustered look you have on?
He readjusts his grip on the blade. âSpeak, sorceress.â
âWh-What do you want me to say?!â You grip at your dress nervously, and that has him even more curious.
âIâm waiting here,â he sing-songs playfully.
âBefore the lie can leave my voice, my neck swells up like a balloon, and chokes me.â
He smiles wickedly. âDemonstrate.â
Gods, if it wasnât immoral, you could wring his neck right now.
You think, for even a moment, a simple lie. And in seconds, youâre almost suffocating on nothing, and Kaiser laughs. Laughs. A full laugh, bending at his knees.
âOh gods, youâre like a pufferfish!â
You let go of the lie, taking heaving breaths. âJust because I have water capabilities does not mean I am a fish.â
In the midst of the conversation, Isagi leans against Noaâs side, a soft conversation full of worry.
âYouâll have to explain her presence to the council,â Isagi tells him, blue eyes wide with hesitation.
âRight, and your suggestion?â
âI have thought about it, considerably. If you say you hired her, with a force as powerful as her, the other nations may think you are to wage war. So⊠Given the heirâs⊠reputation,â Isagiâs gaze flits nervously between you and Kaiser. âIf he is willing, she may be a good fit.â
Noa sighs. This, this exact theory, has been a conversation with the other members of his team for months. That a wife by his side would make him seem less chilling, make the transition to a new heir easier on the public, prevent outroar. It is one thing to feel that Kaiser keeps a nation safe, and another to love him as a ruler.
Itâs an easy decision, but a hard conversation.
âKaiser.â
He whips around, ceasing his antics quickly. âMaster.â
Noa looks like he is about to say something to him, but hesitates, turning to you instead. Isagi nervously steps away from the dais, returning to his position.
âGoddess,â this time, there is no malice behind Noaâs words. âI accept your offer. However, your presence in this nation and in this castle must be explained appropriately. Should I bear you the title of my successorâs betrothed, would that be a title youâre willing to bear?â
Kaiserâs back straightens. âExcuse me?â he utters low.
âYou do not have to bear children,â he specifies. âAnd you do not have to truly be wed.â
A goddess, to be betrothed to a mortal, as princely as he is, is a serious affair. Kaiser slides his gaze to Isagi, with the audacity to even suggest such. And yet, you seem to ponder it like a simple question.
âI see. As long as the sword is in my presence and protection, how you communicate with your nation is none of my concern.â
âSo be it, then,â Noa agrees quickly. âIâll have our people show you to a room.â
You nod, and are whisked away. The throne room, as if knowingly, empties quickly, guards rushing out to leave Kaiser alone with Noa.
âYou made this decision for me,â Kaiser spins to face Noa, spits his words through gritted teeth. âI have been clear. I will take no brides.â
âYou believe the prophecy made a choice for you.â   Â
âThe prophecy bears no mercy. Or do you wish for my death so eagerly? If so, take your sword out and do it your damn self.â
Noa lets him speak, heave his words out until thereâs silence once more.
âShe cannot lie,â Noa says softly. âShe cannot lie to you, Kaiser. And she is a goddess, a divine being.â
âDemigod,â Kaiser corrects.
âShe is divine, and she cannot lie. She is correct, to this end â that as long as she is here, the prophecy cannot come to be. For she has not forsaken us.â Forsaken you, goes unspoken. âShe could be good for you, if you allowed her to be.â
Kaiser lets out a canned laugh. âHa. How can the divine ever understand us?â
Noa stands. âYouâll have plenty of time to find out.â
Kaiser taps his hand against his sword hilt. âYou really will not move on this?â
Noa shakes his head. âShe is too valuable to lose, and you have a reputation for cruelty. The solution is nothing short of perfect.â
The logical comes above his feelings. Kaiser knows this, even if he hates to come face to face with it.
Noa walks out of the throne room, leaving Kaiser to his bitterness.
âShitty master,â he mumbles under his breath to no one.
~
Itâs jarring to all the guards, the way you donât even stand let alone bow when Noa knocks to enter your room. But Noa cares little for things like that, if youâre truly offering what youâve said.
âPerhaps I was too hasty, in presenting the solution before giving you the facts.â He hesitates before you in the reflection of your vanity. You donât respond, barely even look at him as you unclasp your jewelry, laying it on the table.
âHe will not love you.â Noa tells you after a breath, his surefire eyes finally meeting yours.
You give him a curious gaze. âThat is likely for the best. I would outlive him, after all.â
âIt is, truly, on a need-to-know basis. To tell you this-â
âThe prophecy, I presume youâre referring to,â you interrupt, turning to face him.
The shock rolls quickly off him. Divinity does have its mysteries, he supposes. âYou already know.â
âI asked the water, why he is so quick to believe he is forsaken. They told me that he lives under the burden of a prophetic trial. That is all I know.â You stand, moving to unzip your dress only for Noa to hastily pull a partition screen across the room and turn around.
âThe water, it speaks to you?â
âIt does. Though itâs worth noting that it does not make me all-seeing.â Your voice carries over the partition with the ruffle of clothing. âThe queen of the Gods, who sees all fates â she is the only one who is truly all-seeing.â
You come out in a nightgown, folding the partition back. He chucks you a robe that you catch easily.
âYou should learn the ways of this world if you want to pass as a simple water sorceress, especially before the banquet.â
You frown. âThe prince is my betrothed, is he not? Will he not handle it all?â
The idea you present sparks in Noaâs mind. âBrilliant. Iâll have Kaiser and some of the other members of our team show you the ropes. Good night, sorceress.â
You nod to him, and the door clicks shut.
~
âSheâs a what?â
Oliver slams his metal cup of beer down, rolling the dice once more.
âA demigod, Oliver. Gods, are you that drunk already? Keep up.â Karasu grabs at the dice as Oliver moves his pieces.
âCan you all shut the fuck up? What happened to need-to-know basis?â Chigiri slinks himself over to their table.
âWeâre need-to-know.â Karasu jabs a thumb at himself and Oliver.
âThey are, actually, need-to-know.â Isagi puts a gentle hand on Chigiriâs shoulder, settling down next to him. âBecause sheâs never been human in her life.â
âAnd now weâre supposed to, what, teach her to be human? Is that a thing we can do?â Chigiri twirls a strand of hair between his fingers, tapping the end against Isagiâs cheek.
Oliver snorts. âWhat, like a class? Some of us have never sat in one of those, you prissy little shits.â
âShe canât dance, for one.â
âGet Kaiser to teach her. Isnât he her betrothed?â
That has Oliver almost spitting out his drink, choking on it in coughs. âHe's her what?â
Chigiri scowls in his direction. âDude, are you listening at all?â
âIf sheâs really his betrothed, none of us should be teaching her.â Oliver warns genuinely. âHeâll cut down everyone here, before he lets us touch her.â
âItâs just an excuse,â Isagi waves his hand, pulling out a leather-bound bind of notes. âTheyâre not actually together.â
âOh, you actually got that motion to pass. Shit.â Karasu remarks admirably.
âIt must be so tiring,â Bachira sighs happily, falling into place next to Isagi, âto have to actually care about what other people think.â
âThe optics, Bachira,â Isagi smacks the end of his pen across Bachiraâs nose, and he makes an oh! sound in response.
When Kaiser walks in, the room almost goes silent. Heâs used to it, of course. Hearing only the way his footfalls come heavy, boots thumping into the stone floor as a drink is placed right in front of him immediately.
The room slowly fills back with noise as he shoulders off his coat, wrapping it around the chair before sitting. But only his table is still strangely silent.
He flits his gaze over the group. Usually, theyâre the first to kill the silence in the room, yelling about the game or a duel. He looks at Isagi, specifically, who seems the most nervous. âSomething you wanna say to me?â
âUhâŠâ
Chigiri sighs, killing the tension. âWeâre deciding who gets to teach her how to dance.â
Kaiser quirks an eyebrow. âThe demigod?â
Chigiri nods, and Kaiser takes a long gulp of his drink, popping it back down and twirling the top of it with his fingers. âIâll do it.â
âWhat?â Itâs Isagiâs turn to be shocked, sitting up straight.
Kaiser exhales audibly. âNone of you could handle her. She could cut you with water the moment you accidentally step on her.â
Itâs not an insult, really. They know this too. That this is Kaiserâs brand of protection, to add insult to injury just to keep others out of harmâs way. But they play his game.
âThink we canât dodge fast enough? A bit demeaning, donât you think?â Oliverâs grin is wicked, making straight eye contact with Kaiser, who only draws his eyebrows in at his direction.
âYou think that god-killing sword is gonna save you?â Karasu asks.
âI donât have the sword anymore.â
âWhat?â
It stings more than it should, he thinks. The sword that he thought chose only him, so quickly released from his grasp. But his strength is his own, he holds fast to that.Â
Kaiser glances at Karasu. âThose are the terms. She marries me, she gets the sword.â
Ness rests his cheek on his hand. âMan, that sounds like she wins twice.â
Chigiri scoffs at that. âSheâs a demigod. Being down here is probably like being in the sewers to her.â
Kaiser stands abruptly, pushing his drink aside, his coat billowing as he wraps it over himself once more.
âWhere are you going?â Isagi yells, but he doesnât answer.
âHe gone for real?â Oliver elbows Karasu. âIâm too drunk to tell.â
âYeah, man. Heâs goneâ Â
âGreat.â Oliver slaps a piece down. âIâll bet 50 bucks right now they get married for real.â
âWhat the fuck?â Chigiri tilts his head back against the wall, staring at the ceiling like it might give him some reprieve.
Karasu laughs, âOkay, Iâll play. Iâll bet 20 that they try to kill each other.â
âYouâre just a hater.â
âNah, I agree,â Reo leans back in the booth. âKaiserâs a lot of things, but a loving husband is a bit much.â
âSheâs a goddess. Heâs literally already betrothed to her.â Oliver takes another swig. âYâall ainât gonna marry a goddess if she was given to you? Damn, put me in his place, Iâll do it right now.â
~
Kaiser trains, every morning, from sunrise to noon.
You only know because most of the rooms in the palace outlook to a self-contained field. You see him, often, because of this, even if he doesnât speak to you. As you walk down the corridor, in your classes with Isagi about the current climate of the nations.
âIt is useless for me to learn this,â you tell him. âIn a few short millennia, the border of the nations will undoubtedly change. And we will have to relearn it all again. What is the use? Why war at all over something so insignificant? Just have a conversation about it.â
Isagi makes a pointed, bored expression at you for this, and then pretends like you didnât say anything at all. Â
At the end of class today, you press your elbows to the open windowsill.
Kaiser is there, sparring with Ness. Ness is quick, agile, fleet-footed and runs circles around Kaiser so much so that it almost makes it difficult to keep up. Â
Kaiser approaches him at bone-breaking momentum, launches strike after hardened strike. Heâs shirtless, bandages wrapped around the bottom of his torso, and his body is streaked with sweat. Heâs strong, clearly. Broad shoulders clear now from when they were hidden under layers of clothing the first time you met him, the muscles in his arms flexing and relaxing with each step of the friendly duel, hair dipped in saltwater blue.
You know what he looks like, now. You get a sense why Fate brings you here.
He looks like a hero.
The kind that Gods covet, watch from their merry clouds. Itâs no wonder that heâs burdened by a prophetic trial, with a face as cutting as his sword, his hair framing his face and flowing.Â
He takes one look to the side of him and his eyes find yours immediately. It must be some sort of fighterâs sense, you think. For him to have done it so easily.
You give him the space you think he might be asking for. You turn away.
~
He approaches you one night, just before sunset. Karasu had just finished an etiquette lesson with you, setting away forks and knives. Whatever he sees on Kaiserâs face makes him move quicker. He nods once to Kaiser, and then hastily leaves.
âYouâve been making yourself quite at home here, demigod.â Kaiser traces the lace outline of the tablemat, every ridge under his calloused finger.
âI vowed myself to your kingdom to the end of your life. Iâm simply doing what is asked of me.â
âAnd youâre all ready for the banquet, Iâm guessing?â The sentence is almost mocking as he approaches you.
âItâs just a ball, is it not? Iâve been told Iâm just to stand there and make pleasantries.â Â
Kaiser chuckles, more bared teeth than sweet. âIt is, arguably, the worst part of being so-called royalty.â
âYouâre taking this much better than I thought you would.â
"To say no to a goddess' proposal would be the greatest blasphemy, no?"Â
"From what I've seen, you have not minded sacrilege much at all."
âMarriage means little to me. Disillusioned, perhaps, with the prophecy.â He waves his hand like he speaks of something meaningless. But you see it clearly. Before he had even allowed himself the thought of love, it was taken from him. âYour power is great, your presence ensures the continuation of myself as an heir and successor. Even I can reason with that.â
He's right in front of you now, so close you can feel his body warmth.
âDoes it bother me?â He shrugs. âSure. As far as Iâm aware, you are no wife of mine. But a protector of this nation? For that, you are an indispensable ally.â
He looks out the window, towards a coming sunset. Something indescribable on his face, like grief and guilt all in one. He takes a deep breath in and out, inhaling the peace and exhaling the heaviness of his heart, before facing you again. âA war is coming. No one believes me, but I can feel it, as steady as a riverâs current. Until then, Iâll make my peace with you.â
You nod. âSo be it, your highness.â
That has him stepping back, more incredulous than youâve ever seen him, body tensed and frowning. Maybe he shouldâve expected it, given the way heâs just dismissed you. âYour highness? You hadnât questioned my lineage before, but now you dare to do so?â
You stare at him blankly. âYou are a prince, are you not? Isagi says thatâs what princes are called.â
One side of his mouth upturns in relief, and he bursts out a bright laugh. âIs that what they teach you in those lessons Isagi gives? Oh,â a hand runs through the front of his hair, âI thought my own wife-to-be would dare insult me.âÂ
You scoff. âI have no need for that.âÂ
âThe title âyour highnessâ doesnât apply to this nation because strength is valued most. I am heir to the throne not because of the blood running through my veins, but because Noa deemed I the strongest â not just in body but in mind, not just in physical strength but in adaptability.â He says it proudly, like fact, like a knowing so deep within him that it turns pride into faith. âA title like that is something used by the Itoshi brothers, letâs say,â he comments airily. âTheir throne is carried by a bloodline.âÂ
He turns on his heel, only looking back when he realizes you donât follow.
âYou donât know how to dance yet, do you?â
You lean your hip against the table. âI can dance.â
âCome, then. If youâre to be my wife, itâll be an embarrassment if you donât at least act like it.â
You follow him to a ballroom â a stunning, wide area with a looping chandelier, curtains that weigh down in arches over each floor-to-ceiling window.
He swoops you from your distraction with a hand around your waist, and the physical contact shocks you so greatly that orbs of water swirl in your hands.
Kaiser only raises an eyebrow at you. âThis is a dance, not a duel. Or do the gods do it differently?â
For a man who was so passive to you, he holds you so close that your chest to chest, you can feel each breath he takes against you. When he steps with you, his movements are slow and deliberate, never inefficient. He moves not with fluidity, but with each sure step. Pulls you forward, then pushes you back. Circles you, spins you around.
Itâs exactly like when you see him train. Like steps to a kata.
âI thought you said this was not a duel.â
âThese are steps to a classic waltz, demigod.â
âYou have no fluidity to you.â
Kaiser scoffs. âShould I apologize? With the prophetic curse hanging above me, I havenât taken a dancing class.â
âIt doesnât have to be.â
âHm?â
âThe prophecy. It doesnât have to be a curse.â
He stops, separating himself from you, scowling.
âThis session is over.â
âKaiser-,â
âWhat?â He snaps. âYou, of divine nature. You want to tell me how to view my prophecy?â
âI do not say this out of pity, or out of some sort of higher knowing.â You say it with conviction. âAs heir to the throne, a throne that is currently being held by Fate itself, maybe I shouldnât be saying this at all.â
âAnd yet?â
âTo know your fate is to be able to defy it.â And maybe itâs just an effect of your divinity, but it rings like a bell, like truth itself. âYour prophecy may have made a wound, but you are the one who cuts it open. You are a man who wields a sword that cannot, should not be able to be wielded by anyone but the divine. Does that not say something? About you, about your capabilities?â
âAnd yet you took it from me.âÂ
The silence that follows is thick with indecision. Kaiser lets the uncomfortableness sit, rejects every heartwarmed statement you make with a roll of his shoulders, like water off a smoothened rock, replaced with only his anger. âI trained for weeks before I could lift that sword out of the riverbank. Yet it is yours, now, simply because you are supposedly its rightful owner.âÂ
Conflict runs through your face so clearly, he wonders that even if you could lie, whether it would mean anything at all. He watches as your hand reaches into a conjured puddle of water that floats in the air, and out comes the divine sword.
You hold it in your hand with an ease that he has spent months capturing. It strikes envy in him like a branded sear.Â
âMy role here is technically to secure the sword. I have no need to wield it.â You hold it at the bottom of its handle, directing the top of it to him. âIf you swear you wonât lose her, I can set a compromise of sorts.âÂ
âYou think Iâd agree to a compromise?âÂ
You open up your palm, and a bracelet appears. âThis will help you keep the sword in a pocket dimension we can both access. If youâre willing to place it there to secure it when youâre not using it, Iâll return her to you until the end of your line.âÂ
Huh. A safe-keeping place is a more neutral proposition than he had thought youâd come up with. To have her back kills the fight in him, and he accepts begrudgingly, testing the magic in his hands until it becomes natural.Â
âFor the record, Kaiser, I have not always been worthy of it.â
Something about the way his name slips off your lips has him keening. âWorthy?â
âI stayed true to my course. I was given a title. And then I could wield the sword, presented to me by my queen.â
âYour queen. Heir to the throne.â He laughs bitterly, knowingly. âYouâre a princess.â
âDespite your mocking tone, Iâll have you know that title of mine is of the highest regard. I donât take it nearly as lightly as you do with yours.â
âThatâs why you didnât bow or kneel. You take whatâs meant to be yours without a second thought. Not because youâre unknowing, or because of some godly pride, but because you have never been lesser.â He flicks a finger between your eyebrows. âWhat a spoiled thing you are. Can you even fight?â
Something in Kaiser takes pride in the way you frown more deeply, itâs almost like a pout. Itâs almostâŠÂ
âWell, I definitely wasnât sitting idly in the war between Gods.âÂ
âIâve never seen you train.âÂ
âThatâs because youâre always on the training grounds.âÂ
âOh? You wonât show me?âÂ
âIâm giving you space. Iâm no wife of yours, no?â Thereâs a sting to it when you say it, having his words thrown back at him.Â
âDuel with me. Tomorrow.â He spins you, lets you out of his hold before bringing you back in.Â
~
He begins to meet you, day after day. A duel first, and then a dance. The dichotomy would be distasteful to any other, but you of divine blood do not even flinch at his request.
He may be displeased to have you, but his mouth cracked as wide and wicked as a catâs at the prospect of a fight.
âGo on, then.â He takes a blunt, wooden sword, throwing it in your direction. âOr do you only fight with magic?â He teases.Â
You swing the sword, rotating your wrist with ease. âDo you forget yourself, prince? I am half divine, you will surely lose. Are you sure you want to go through with this anyways?âÂ
His mouth widens, more teeth than smile. âBring it.âÂ
You know, the moment you defend against his first strike, that a singular hit from him on the battlefield must be deadly. He is surefooted, his whole weight bears down in every move. He doesnât let you breathe once, much faster than you wouldâve thought with someone of his size and height.Â
Kaiser was almost right about one thing, that the divine adds to your magic more than your physical strength. With enough training, in just simple hand-to-hand combat⊠He might have the potential to beat you.Â
But not today. Today, you have him pinned to the ground, makeshift blade to his throat.Â
âYouâre awfully close,â he gasps out slyly. And itâs in this moment that you notice, too, how right he is about that, how you can feel his heartbeat underneath yours, his chest against yours with each exhale.Â
âWhat?â He grins wide, âafraid youâll miss?âÂ
By all the Gods, you want to knock the living daylights out of him. He notices your anger in that hesitation, your conflict between doing what is right and what you want, and flips you over, swapping your positions until his hips are pressed against yours.Â
Something about your shell-shocked face makes him stir.Â
âFirst rule of fighting, sweetheart,â he runs a hand through his hair before planting it next to your head, leaning into you close. âNever get distracted by your opponent.â
Heâs closer than he was before, admiring the way you look under him, your hair splayed along the ground and the sweet fire of irritation in your eyes. Is the heaving of your chest from your anger towards him, or from something else entirely?Â
âWhen Gods fight, there is not nearly as much prattling.â You grit at him. He smells like the grass of the field and the winter air and the heavy musk of sweat, and when you shove him off, it feels like your hand meets the hard rock of an unruly ocean.Â
~
It is during dances that he speaks to you. Not at first, but slowly, like a river that streams into the ocean. You tell him tales about the Gods, about your friends, about wars and petty arguments. And he starts to answer you, more often than not, with every question you might have.Â
âI have wondered about something.âÂ
âHm?â
âThe sheathing. It prevents even me from detecting the swordâs divinity.âÂ
âHuh, so Nagi really wasnât lying.âÂ
âNagi, who is always with Reo?âÂ
Kaiser nods. âThey say Nagi was once sought upon by a god for his talents, a god who was constantly sending him dreams. But he grew tired of it, so he found a material that prevents even the gods from finding him so he can sleep in peace.âÂ
The conversation often leads to the prophecy, a bitterness like licorice on his tongue. Even if he skates around the topic, you donât let him hide from it, cutting straight to the heart of the truth.
âYou can live in the cold bitterness youâve put yourself in, Kaiser,â you tell him, one of these nights. âOr you can live, and maybe even possibly die, warmed by a life you truly felt was worth living. Your own choices. Not because of a prophecy, or because of Noa, or even in spite of me.â
But despite it, he doesnât move away. Because it is the only time he has you to himself. He sees you, always, with Isagi and Oliver and Karasu and Chigiri. How you have molded into their lives with simplicity, sit with them at meals and have easy conversation despite knowing nothing, in a way that he has never once allowed himself to enjoy. What does it say about Kaiser? That he can't stand your presence but he can't stand your absence even more? That he would rather have a biting argument with you than leave you to your own devices?Â
It's during duel and dance that he comes as close as he can to touching you. If he did anymore, it would become something he doesn't have the heart to name without unease settling in his gut.
~
On the day of the banquet, Chigiri sits you down in your vanity, braiding your hair back in his hands.
âThe queen of the Gods, her lover, a friend of mine⊠He used to do this for me too.â
Chigiri silently appreciates that you donât ask him why it is him that helps you with this. That divinity doesnât hold the same notions this world does.
âHe would-,â you laugh softly to yourself. Youâre stunning like this, Chigiri canât help but notice. A goddess, most casual as can be. âHe would say that I was useless at it, actually. You two mightâve been good friends.â
âMe? Friends with a god?â Chigiri finishes the braid, tilting your head in his hands to admire the way the braid crowns around each side.
âOf the Fae, actually. A beautiful man he is. You would fit right in.â
That stops Chigiri, has him taking a sharp intake of breath, smiling at you through the vanityâs reflection. âThank you, princess. Though you would do good to be more careful during this banquet to compliment anyone.â
You smile softly back. âAh, yes, my betrothed who will not love me might get jealous. Gods are not so different than people, in this regard.â
âIs that soâŠâ
~
Itâs when you meet the Itoshi brothers at the banquet that you begin to understand why Isagi gave you all these lessons.
Where Kaiser is muscle and sword first, more fighter than prince, Sae and Rin are the opposite. They have a grace befitting of royalty. Instead of heavy footfalls that you can hear even in the blanket of snow, they are light-footed, conscious of it in the echoed ballroom.
Though you suspect, from the way Sae grips Kaiserâs forearm as they shake hands, from the way Kaiser regards Sae, that he is somehow just as strong of a fighter. That royalty is an illusion Sae and Rin put on, for peaceâs sake.
Something indescribable flits over Saeâs face as you curtsy in front of him, but itâs gone in a moment, replaced with his nonchalance.
âThe betrothed of the banquet. We are most pleased to make your acquaintance.â Sae bows his head to you, and Rin follows in his stead.
You smile, something beaming and sweet. âThe pleasure is all mine.â
âWould you mind, Kaiser?â Saeâs eyes only leave yours for a glance, to check in at Kaiserâs now furrowed look. âIâd like to take your wife-to-be for a dance.â
Kaiserâs back straightens, a hardened gaze with gritted teeth. But he says nothing. You swear Sae almost grins.
âIâll return her back to you.â He says it like a favor, and Kaiser is only held back by Karasuâs hand on his shoulder.
âItâs just one dance, Kai,â Kaiser looks at Karasu, then to you, and then back to Sae. He barely nods once.
âAre you sure?â You ask him.
He scowls. âWhat do I have to be worried about?â
Well, itâs not like you want to anger him further. You let Sae take your hand, leading you to the floor.
âI almost didn't think you were who you said you were, when I saw you,â Sae tells you, breaking the quiet of the dance.Â
You lean back so you can see his whole face, your confusion clear. âYour highness?â
âWhen I had heard of you, they told me that waves flowed off your dress like water itself holds you sacred. Yet here you are, as regular as can be.â
Sae twirls you away from him, then brings you back into his arms. âThey say you shook the earth with a single step. Where is all that power you were said to hold?â He holds you close, watching your every reaction with his crystal gaze. âThis place. Theyâve placated you, tamed you.â
He brings his mouth to your ear, the body warmth of his entire chest seeping into yours. âIf you were mine, I would never force you into a box you didnât belong. Iâm not afraid of you. Iâm not afraid of Kaiser, even with his god-killing sword.â He spins you again, capturing your waist. âIf you were mine, I wouldnât be afraid to demonstrate your power to the world.â
âSae.â He looks at you in a way that feels meaningful. You donât know the pleasantries of this nation or his in-depth, but you know, somehow, that this feels like this is something you should shield from.Â
âOh? No honorifics already? Weâre that intimate, are we?â
To fight is one thing, but this is something entirely different. Being able to hurt others with a play instead of a sword, youâre not sure if you can shield others from something like that.
As the song ends, Sae takes your hand, brings it to his mouth to kiss the back of it. âConsider my proposition, princess. Before your marriage solidifies, and becomes something you canât escape from.â
With his hand on the small of your waist, he brings you back to Kaiser dutifully. Kaiser links his arm with yours immediately, before any of you can spare a goodbye.
âWhat did he say to you?â
You hum. You get the sense that maybeâŠ
âNothing of importance,â you tell him instead.
âHm?â He tilts your chin up to meet you eye to eye. âIs my own betrothed keeping secrets from me?â
âHe said I donât seem all that powerful.â
That makes Kaiser smile, not something sweet but with teeth bared, like a wolf. âHe hasnât seen you in action.â He pulls you in, hand wrapping to the back of your neck, a slow and deep whisper. âDo you want to show them?â
âWerenât we both told thatâs inappropriate? Isagi said the optics could make your allies scared.â
Kaiser rolls his eyes. âIsagi this, optics that. Our country has always been about the brawl and brave. Let the nations fear us, then. I, with my cruelty and a god-killing sword. You, a sorceress second to none. Itâs a pretty picture, is it not?â
He straps his sword to his back and brings you to the middle of the room, and as the guests of honor, the crowd gives you both a wide berth. He circles you, just like you practiced. Makes you center stage.
âGo on then, princess.â He lets go of your hand and bows, sweeping his arm out. âShow us who you really are.â
âKaiser,â you whisper. âWe have very clear orders-â
âI make the orders, not follow them. So make your choice, princess. Wasnât it you who said that it is worth living a life warmed by your own choices? Tell me, then. Do you want to show them? Or do you want to play nice?â
This play, to have ego and pride dive head-first into a situation, is so very human. And yet-
You let water overcast your body from your waist, let it roll off in layers like waves into the floor. Anyone who has had experience with magic can see your ultimate control over it, how the floor isnât wet at all, how the water was conjured from nothing. Your hair is silken with dampness, framing your face like gloss. Gasps and awes from the audience makes Kaiser grin even wider.
âThere we go.â Kaiser reaches behind him to unsheath his blade, and the galaxy within swirls. He spins it in his hand, and itâs almost like heâs never been happier.
In seconds, he strikes at you. Your hands move up instinctively, blocking the blade with a stream of water. The sound it makes, divinity against divinity, is like a low bell. The floor beneath you shakes with the strength of the strike, water dispersing around your feet in cascades to cushion the impact. You hear screams of shock, a glass breaking.
âKaiser,â you grit, but all he does is widen that wicked, quicksilver grin.
And then he laughs, stepping away and sheathing the blade back. He holds one hand out to you instead.
âNext time, I want a duel in front of everyone. But this time, I guess a dance will suffice.â
You exhale gratefully, taking his hand in yours and retracting your water. âLet us dance, then.â
And with none of a princeâs grace, with movements that feel more fight than dance, he drifts along the floor with you.
~
Isagi collapses into the booth, a palm pressed to his eyebrows. âOur allies thought they were about to fight each other.â
âCan I cash in on my bet now?â Karasu rolls a skewer stick between his fingers. âBecause they mightâve almost killed each other.âÂ
âNah,â Oliver leans back. âI think thatâs just foreplay.âÂ
Isagi opens his eyes to find Chigiri and Bachira standing before the booth. Chigiriâs not meeting his eyes, his mouth perching to one side in a way that squishes one of his cheeks.Â
âWhat happened?âÂ
âTheyâre gone.âÂ
âHa?âÂ
âWe had one drink. One.âÂ
Oliver has the audacity to laugh, hand over his mouth. âDonât worry, Isagi,â he pats him on the back. âIâm sure theyâre just fucking around.âÂ
In another corner of the hall, royals speak in low tones.Â
âWe can just take her if you like her,â Shidou tells Sae with the sweetest smile a man like that can muster. âNo need to ask poor little Kai-Kai.âÂ
Sae says nothing, eyeing you quietly as you step out of the hall.Â
~
You are sitting at the edge of the ocean, letting the slate-crested waves wash over you, when he finds you.Â
âYou can dry me in a momentâs notice if I am to sit with you, right?â He says it almost reluctantly, even though heâs here anyways. Heâs dropped his off coat somewhere along the way, and thereâs something so naked about seeing him in just a shirt. He almost seems softer, without the harsh lines of battle-ready clothing or the fur that drapes around him, relaxed in a way he wasnât in the banquet hall.Â
You smile. âI can keep you dry whilst you're sitting.âÂ
He relents, then. Allowing the strangeness of sitting on wet sand without getting wet.Â
âWas the banquet up to your expectations, then, Kaiser?âÂ
Expectations. Heâs had none of a party like this. Being allowed to dream is a privilege, and privileges were not granted to him.
âYou are officially my wife-to-be,â he says instead. âShouldnât you call me something a little more intimate?â
You gaze out into the horizon for a moment, and something in your eyes unfocuses, like youâve gone somewhere else and then returned. âVery well. I shall call you Mihya.â
It strikes a chord in him, like a teaspoon hitting a glass. âMihya? Where did that come from?â
âThe water.â
âShe speaks to you?âÂ
âShe says in another life, you are given a nickname like that.â
âAnother lifeâŠâ He lies down in the sand, watches the streaks of sunset in the blueing sky.Â
âAsk then, Mihya,â you lean over him slightly, until all he can see is the sky and the way your features soften. âThe question we both know is on your mind.â
He almost wants to reach out, hold your cheek in his hand. Itâs a foreign feeling to him, so foreign it almost feels like unease â to want to extend a gentleness like that to another person. âWonât you just tell me?â
You breathe in the sea-salt air, and breathe out a heart-warmed truth. âThe prophecy does not hold you captive in another life.â
Kaiser, for once, lets himself dream. Of a different life, where he is unburdened by a prophecy, and burns brightly.
~
âIt would seem strange if you werenât together, with all the other guests in the palace.â Thatâs what Oliver tells you as he gestures for you to take his arm, leading you to Kaiserâs room.Â
Itâs both plainer and more furnished than you thought, like someone who isnât him had chosen the furniture and the color of the walls. But the items in the bookshelves seem well-loved, items taken out and put back haphazardly, scrolls and books placed back half-way. The bathroom door opens with a flood of light. Â
âYouâre here.â Itâs rare to shock Kaiser in a way that doesnât make him immediately reach for his sword.
You turn to look at him, taking in his half-dressed state. âWere you expecting some other woman?âÂ
âOh, so youâre the jealous type?âÂ
He almost wants to laugh at the clear discomfort on your face. Gods donât tease, heâs guessing?Â
The bed gives way to you as you take your place. âI hear itâs common for princes to take many lovers.âÂ
The moonlight spills over the bedsheets as the room darkens, and you summon the sword to float right above you, looking into it. He joins you, wanting to see exactly what youâre seeing.Â
âItâs not a night sky.â Your voice is so soft in the blanket of night between you both.Â
âHm?âÂ
âInside the sword. Your people say it looks like the night sky. Itâs not. Itâs a galaxy.âÂ
He reaches his hand out, tracing over the glass along the middle of the weapon, a silent remark for you to continue.Â
âAt the beginning of all worlds, the first-ever contract was made between the first-ever forces, and with it, this sword was said to be conjured out of the galaxy. And so, a part of the galaxy at the beginning of all worlds was contained in this sword.âÂ
The stars in the sword move within like theyâre responding to your words, borne witness to all the events. But instead of watching them, you turn to him.Â
âYou have held and wielded a primordial piece of this world. It has allowed you to hold it, granted you its blessing.âÂ
Blessed. That is not a phrase Kaiser would have ever used to describe himself. But coming from you, he can almost believe it. Almost hope to have a little more than heâs ever had.Â
The sword disappears with a movement of his hand, and he rolls to lean over you. Silence drops like a curtain. The only sound he knows is your breath and his.Â
During a fight, his feelings can almost be mistaken for adrenaline. But even under the shadow of the moon, with the cushioned silence between you both, the way you cut straight to the truth rings like a silver bell.
He canât hide from you. Or maybe. Maybe heâs tired of hiding at all.
He is a man who has only known war and battle, was born and bred into it. War-forged, is what they call men like him. His hands know weapons, know how to kill.
He does not know if they know how to love. And yet-
He cups your face, and drinks you in.
He kisses you with caution, like you might melt from his grasp if he held too tightly. Presses his lips against yours slowly. He runs his hand gently over your hairline as he parts from you.Â
Is this okay? He wants to ask. But instead, he says: âTell me what you want.âÂ
You wrap your arms around his neck, your lips brushing against yours when you answer: âYou.âÂ
And then he kisses you like a man starved, never known by this feeling that gets caught up in his throat with every noise of yours he swallows.Â
âIs this⊠is this what you want?â You try to ask as you part from him for air, but he presses his mouth to the space behind your ear instead, laying kisses down your neck. âIs this a decision that you are making for yourself, by your own hands? That is entirely for you?âÂ
That makes him stop. But when he looks at you with a surefire gazeâŠÂ
He knows it, undoubtedly. That this, for once, is his.Â
âThere are no lovers,â he tells you between kisses, to your shoulder, down your collarbone, to your breastbone.Â
âWhat?âÂ
âI take no lovers.â He unclasps your bra, lets the material fall from his hands to cup your supple flesh. âIâve never been princely, after all.âÂ
âYou- Kai-âÂ
He runs his thumbs across both your nipples, admires how they perk up at his administrations, flitting his gaze between them and your face as he brings his mouth down over one of them.Â
He presses kisses down your body, cups your heat in his hand like heâs begging you to respond, like heâs saying let me have this. The inside of your thighs is soft as cream under his calloused hands. His thumb moves along the outside of your underwear, from your slit up to your clit with his fingers pressing tentatively against the fabric until youâre grabbing at his wrist.Â
âYouâre so tense,â he teases, pressing a kiss to your cheek. âWant me to take care of that for you?â He runs the knuckles of his hand over your clothed slit, bumping into your clit with his thumb until your breathing gets heavy, your hands gripping his shoulders.Â
âKaiser,â you breathe, and he clicks his tongue.Â
âThatâs not what you call me, baby. Not anymore.âÂ
âMihya.âÂ
âMm,â he slides his fingers into your panties from the side, a huff of breath leaves him at the wetness he finds. âGood girls get rewarded, you know?âÂ
Heat coils hot deep in your stomach. He canât take the restriction, pulling your panties down and revealing your core to the cold air. He lets his slickness pool on his fingers, collects it before bringing it to your clit. Itâs like a drug, watching the way your face gives way to pleasure, how your body arches into him.Â
âMihya,â you gasp again, like a chant, a prayer. Is this what the gods feel like, to be asked of?Â
âLet me watch,â he says it like a demand but it aches with desperation, a thing he wonât admit outside these four walls. He presses with more confidence now, slides one finger into you, then two. Thereâs little resistance with the way heâs riled you up, long fingers pressing into you until he reaches something that has you making a broken moan so pretty he canât help but tilt into it again.Â
âI want to see it,â he tells you. This is something he makes happen to you, with his own hands, his own words, his own body that shares its heat with yours. That notion alone runs arousal straight through him. Your panting breath, the way your body shakes with each swipe against your clit.Â
âI want to see you fall apart in my arms.â He whispers, and you respond in kind. You always do to him, donât you? Heâs been seen too surely by you, now itâs his turn. Your body tenses entirely, tightly, gripping him as he grants you reprieve. A soft whine leaves your mouth along with something like his name, and the rough pad of his thumb circles over your clit until you crash, coming around his fingers.Â
He swipes a thumb over your cheek, allows himself the gentleness that heâs held back for so long with you.Â
âOne more, okay?â
Your eyes widen. âMihya,â this time itâs like a warning, but the way you say his name is so breathy it has him pressing a hand over his pants.Â
âYeah, say my name just like that.â He shuffles down until his mouth is pressing to your stomach, just above your mound. Then again to the inside of your knee, trailing up until the inside of your thigh, his breath ghosting over the sensitive skin there.Â
âYouâre-, wait, we just- I justâÂ
âMm, and youâre gonna give me one more.â He kisses your clit first, like a promise, and then he laps at your core generously, from the bottom of your slit all the way to your clit, his flat tongue against the whole of you. Every drop of slick from your previous orgasm is taken in by him with each moan he makes against your core. If he had known this feeling was going to enter his life, that it wouldâve felt like this, maybe he wouldâve readied himself better for it. Instead, he finds himself starving at the table where itâs served. The taste of you on his tongue wraps him in a heady pleasure, but itâs every sound he takes out of you that has him pressing a little more insistently, tongue laving over you.Â
âPl-please,â your words break between gasps, and it has him lapping into your clit with more pressure.Â
âI can never say no to you, can I?â he mumbles between your legs. And then heâs flipping you over, hoisting you onto your knees and skimming his hands over your rear and thighs before diving in again. Your face is pressed into the pillow, hands grabbing the sheets. Kaiser almost seems dazed as he moans into your cunt, swollen and wet like a sirenâs call, hands wrapped so tightly around your plush thighs that it feels like it might bruise.Â
âLet me taste,â he mutters, mouth still lodged into your cunt, like that isnât what heâs already doing. âCome on baby, give it to me. Let me taste it on my tongue.âÂ
Your hole clenches and flutters around nothing as another orgasm rocks through you, your breath coming short as you break apart on his tongue with a whine.Â
He flips you over again, and the look on his face takes your breath away. Your slick shimmers on his mouth as he trails his tongue over his lips, like heâs addicted, like he canât get enough. He tilts his head with a grin so cocky that if you werenât so blissed out you might just punch him.Â
âThere something you want, pretty?â He leans over you, hand to the bedpost, and how broad and tall he is becomes that much more obvious. You let yourself look, at the way his tattoo drapes over his arm, run your hands over the muscle of his torso down to his v-line. You hear a sharp intake of breath as your hand moves lower, running under his loose sleep pants to the base of his cock.Â
He grabs your hand in his, bringing it over your head and circling both your wrists. âAsk.âÂ
âYou-,â your eyes narrow and you huff at him, but it only makes him smile. âWonât you just-âÂ
âNuh-uh.âÂ
âI could cut you down here.âÂ
He drops his pants, pumping his cock once and then sliding it along your slit. âYou could. And then whoâll give you what you want?âÂ
You want to roll your eyes, but then he has one hand tapping against your clit, the other gripping either side of your cheeks.Â
âYou begged so pretty for me earlier when I had my mouth on you,â he rasps. âWhat happened to that?âÂ
The harsh look you give him under those fluttering lashes of yours makes something stir in his gut, arousal shot through his veins, pupils wide. He plays with you, warm hands against your skin and between your legs, the soft skin of his cock sliding between your thighs until youâre gasping in his hold again, grinning like a battle won.Â
âPlease, Mihya,â you sigh.Â
âMhmm. Please what?âÂ
âPlease- please fuck me.âÂ
He gets off on it, watching you yield to him, spreading your legs, dripping your hot slick onto his cock. He presses the head against you, petaled folds opening up to receive him as he slides into you slowly. Just the first few inches is so thick inside of you that your hands wrap around the muscles of his arms, nails digging in.Â
âShh, baby, you can take it,â he hushes your little whines, tracing your hairline with such gentleness it contradicts the way he pulls out of you just slightly only to push in again.Â
âYouâre- oh,â your body gives into him, even more so when he brings his hand down to tap on your clit, his mouth over your neck, to the side of your mouth, until heâs kissing you and taking in every noise you make. Itâs almost a distraction, helps your body to relax so he can press into you deeper. You think you feel every inch as it enters you, all the way until the hilt, until the head is pressing deep inside of you and his hips meet yours. Â
He lets out a rough, deep moan against the expanse of your neck, breath coming short as your walls tighten around him.Â
âFuck, baby. You gotta let me move.â Your arms wrap around him tighter, a whimper falling from your lips as he tilts his hips up to plunge into you again. Itâs hard and slow and deep and if it wasnât for his grip on you, you mightâve hit the headboard. But heâs careful about it â more than you mightâve thought heâd be. Pressing your body into the bed as his hips meet yours again and again.Â
âIt feels so good,â you tell him, and it has him pressing a kiss to your cheek in return. Makes every moan you make that much sweeter, to know itâs out of your pleasure, to know itâs because of him.Â
âGood girl. Tell me again.âÂ
âFeels- youâre so big, so- please, I need-â Your walls can barely clench down onto him with how he feels inside of you. Chest to chest with him, the contact of skin on skin-
âYou drive me insane,â he grumbles it into your skin; a confession, exacerbated with each thrust of his hips as he picks up the speed, until heâs slamming into you with a kind of strength that has you seeing constellations behind your eyes. He wants you- needs you to feel the way he feels. Needs to have you lying in his bed, thinking only of him and how he makes you feel. Heat pools in your core until youâre arching your back, and he knows it now â knows it like the back of his hand.Â
âGive it to me.â Itâs a command, a need, if you listen closely enough. âCome around my cock. Show me.âÂ
âMihya, itâs so much, itâs so so much.â Itâs treacherous, the way it works through your body, being on the brink.Â
His thumb is slick over your clit, pressing just a little more, until your thighs are tightening under his unrelenting body. âCome for me.âÂ
You chant his name until the words start to become nothing in your mouth, until youâre breathless, until your whole body tenses under him and his hold against you gets that much rougher and your walls clamp down and then your body shakes as you come. You almost scream, only silenced by his lips on yours. He comes quickly after that, his eyes never leaving yours, taking in how you look underneath him as his cock gets more sensitive and paints the inside of your walls. He doesnât stop, doesnât slow until he feels your body start to relax under his.Â
You can barely process coming down as heâs kissing you again, deeply and with force, like heâs etching the memory of you into his mind and onto your lips.Â
For once, he lets himself recognize â how tiring the emptiness has been, to be devoid of this feeling and instead be filled with the fear that itâll be turned against him. For once, he lets himself feel â to have something that is wholly his. to know and be known. To give and know you will receive. Not an offering at an altar but a hand in his, not a prayer but a soft word spoken in return. Kaiser does not want something as untouching as approval or attention from the divine. But he does want your waist in his arms, your forehead against his.
âJust like this,â he whispers it, a kiss placed to your forehead. You donât know what he means, too tired to ask.Â
This is exactly what heâs always wanted. Just like this.Â
~
Not unlike a parent, Noa notices the closeness of your relationship. In touch, in stolen glances, in longing. A private conversation with him over afternoon tea is not unique, but the heaviness that weighs on him is.Â
âAs the goddess who cannot lie, I have to ask you.â The hardened look on his face makes you straighten your back, putting down your teacup. âYou know, that I have to ask.â
Silence sits between you both like a shoe about to drop.Â
Noa yields. âHas he truly been forsaken by all the gods?â
You are strangely silent as you look at him, then away, then back.Â
âAnswer me, demigod.â
âI donât know.â
âWhat?â
âI. Donât. Know. I have told you before, that I am not a seer, or an oracle. Water holds memory. I can see the past, I can even see other lives parallel to ours, but I cannot see the future. This is the limit of my power.â
âYou are of divine nature.âÂ
âI had said what I said at our first meeting, and that has not changed. As long as I am here, the Gods have not forsaken him. For I have not forsaken him. Is that not enough? How many Gods would travel to your realm, vow themselves to a human kingdom? Even if it is I alone that stands before you, is that not enough?â
Noa sighs, more exasperated than youâve ever seen a serious man like him. âHe deserves more, that boy. For what he has been put through.â
âAll greatness comes with a price. All heroes face tragedy. He, no matter how much you may care for him, is not the exception to that.â You tilt your head, like a cat with curiosity. But unlike that sweetness, your words are cutting. âYou made him a ruler. You made him a hero. So, stand by that. Or does it make you uncomfortable? To consider the role you, too, have played in his life?â
Noa, of course, has thought about this too. Had he not chosen Kaiser to rule, would he have had the prophecy weighing on him like a second shadow?Â
âIf the prophecy holds true, you will inevitably leave him.â Noa swallows, hand flat against the table. âHe will inevitably be forsaken, even by you.â
âThen why,â you ask, genuinely, âdid you ask me to stay?â
~
In the weeks that follow, you learn exactly why. Like Kaiser had predicted, talk of battle comes.Â
âWe suspect a neighboring nation wishes to wage war with us.â Noa looks out to the slate-blue ocean from the window of the war room.Â
âA man who wants control of this whole world,â Karasu huffs. âThereâs never a lack of them, is there?â
âHe thinks himself a god. Or thatâs what Sae has told us.âÂ
âYouâre sure Saeâs information checks out?âÂ
âShidou and Otoya like to visit neighboring nations for uh⊠fun, letâs say,â Chigiri rolls his eyes, then plants his face in his hands. âHe said something along the lines of âyou donât wanna know how they found outâ and âShidou sleeps with both men and women, so itâs been cross-checked too.ââÂ
âAnd then we asked him about war,â Isagi throws his notes down on the table. âHe said, and I quote, âI already have more land than I know what to do with. What could another few acres give me? What a hassle.ââÂ
âThe enemy are bold to come for us first.â Kaiser frowns considerably. They are possibly the one nation blasphemous enough that would not blink at the thought of fighting a god. âThereâs something weâre not seeing.â
Isagi nods in agreement. âWe still donât know the reason theyâre coming here first. It could be the sword, or the goddess.â Isagi frowns. âI told you not to make a scene at the banquet.â
Kaiser gives him a curious look with a smile he fails to hide. âThe point of a banquet is to wow the people. The people were wowed, were they not?âÂ
âIt could be, it could not be,â Noa kills the conflict there. âThat information would have been made public regardless of the spectacle. It could even simply be the throne itself they seek. An army like ours could parade into the neighboring nations and lay waste, our people are used to much harsher weathers.âÂ
âOr maybe he means to make a statement,â Karasu shrugs. âIf he wants to be a god, maybe he means to punish the disrespect weâve shown.âÂ
âWhat do we actually know?â Chigiri taps the map of this nation splayed across the table.
âWe know he wants to take control of this world, and we know his plan includes something from us.âÂ
âHe knows once he controls the world, he has to take care of it, right?â Oliver rests his jaw in his hand. âAs in, itâs not just about buying the house, itâs about cleaning it too. The plan â it has to be bigger than this, no?âÂ
âWonât happen once we kill him here. So as far as we know, there are three things we have that he could want: the sword, the goddess, the army.â Chigiri holds up his fingers as he counts.Â
âSo weâll meet him with all three at the front lines. Fear does not wield us, after all. Only strength.â Kaiser says it like a mantra. You suspect it might be exactly that.Â
~
âWhat a pleasant surprise to see you again so soon, princess.âÂ
As an ally, Sae arrived on the day of battle without question. He is much different from the first time you saw him, chainmail armor wraps tight and sleek around his body, clearly of a weight underneath his clothing. He stands straighter, shoulders broader, badges clipped to his outer jacket. Itâs clear to anyone who looks at him, that itâs almost like he was born into them â meant for them.Â
âYouâre both on the front lines then?âÂ
âIdle hands,â Kaiser starts.
âDevilâs workshop.â You finish. You hear a horse galloping, then a voice.Â
âThereâs something wrong.â The people give a wide berth as Oliver arrives, with a sleek black mare thatâs obedient as can be. âThe majority of the enemiesâ troops are not in front of us.âÂ
All of you turn to look, but itâs on the front lines that makes it most difficult to tell where the crowd begins and ends.Â
âI did a rough head count from the tower. This isnât the count we had observed just the other day. Theyâll die easily, like this, against us. And I donât mean that from an egotistical standpoint. I think these men are here to die, meant to die. It serves to mean ââÂ
âThis is a distraction.âÂ
Karasu appears at your side, with an utmost silence only he is capable of. âTheyâre headed for the main castle, from around the edge of the border.âÂ
You and Kaiser look to each other with a whole silent conversation, and Sae sighs.Â
âGo on, then.âÂ
You turn to Sae immediately, with a seriousness he doesnât expect. âYouâll be unprotected.âÂ
âWe chopped liver to you, girl?â Shidou sneers.Â
Oliver drops down from his horse. âIâll take over here.âÂ
âYour care for me is truly touching, princess,â Saeâs voice lilts touchingly, almost revealing how much he likes it. âBut you swore a vow to this kingdom, so go fulfill it.âÂ
Even in the middle of a war, it gets Kaiser all worked up, his chin jutting as you both run back to the palace. But Sae understands duty, stands by it. Itâs what makes him worthy of his own title in his own kingdom.Â
Oliver waits until youâre both out of sight before turning to Sae. âDid you really plan to steal her?âÂ
âWell,â Sae shrugs. âDid you plan on letting her go so easily?âÂ
~
Your water runs in cascading waves through the whole of the palace, like the ocean itself comes rushing through the walls. It knocks all the soldiers down as you and Kaiser run through, and he picks up any stragglers with ease. Â
âThe throne room?â Kaiser slams the hilt of his sword into the guy behind him, and he collapses instantly.Â
âIt is the safest room.âÂ
âThat makes no sense. If you knew anything about our people, youâd know we never hide ourselves there in a battle.âÂ
âGo anyways,â you tell him, as another man gets thrown off his feet. âGo, Kaiser!âÂ
He takes one final look at you, at the strength that you hold in your hands, and then he runs.Â
The man he finds sitting on the throne has black hair cut blunt to his chin, a white mask over one side of his face. Kaiser unsheathes his sword, pointed straight and true.Â
âThat throne doesnât belong to you.âÂ
âIt will. Along with that sword youâre holding.âÂ
Kaiser chuckles, the kind that has madness interlaced in it. âIf you wanted the sword so bad, you couldâve asked for a one-on-one combat duel. I havenât had a satisfying fight in a long time, Iâd be happy to lay the sword as a winning prize.âÂ
What must be the manâs most elite fighters drop down from the ceiling, crowding in on all sides.Â
âAh, I see,â Kaiser stands straighter, reaching behind him to unsheath his second sword. âIt is your capabilities that do not match mine.â
When they come for him, itâs clear to even the heavens that he is exactly as he is fated â a force to be reckoned with. He moves like a spider-spun silken web, capturing each of them blow by blow. His swords cut like butter through them with impressive speed and strength. His breath comes fast and hard when he finishes, sweat dripping down his back.Â
âI see now, prince,â the man approaches him, and itâs closer up that he realizes heâs simply in a suit, no armor. âWhy they praise you, despite your blasphemy. You, a prince famous for cursing divinity at a whimâs notice, are a powerful ally. Kneel before me, then, and Iâll cease this all â let you join our cause in a war against the gods, in stealing their divinity from them. Iâll even forgive this transgression of bedding one.âÂ
âMe? Kneel?â The canned laugh that Kaiser lets out echoes. âI kneel to no god, let alone a man who wants to become one.âÂ
âSo be it, then.âÂ
Kaiser hears something above him. By the gods, whatâs with this guy and ceilings? Is that why he wants to fight here? A dust of something shimmers down, he pulls his cloak over himself-Â
From the doorway, you throw your water across the room, shielding Kaiser from whatever it may have been. And in the same moment, a poof of shimmer bursts over your own head and tumbles down around you.Â
âThatâs the problem with you gods, isnât it? You always think youâre infallible.âÂ
You cough, falling to one of your knees. Dread fills inside of you, like a faucet you canât turn off. You canât move. How is that possible?Â
The man taps two fingers to the top of your head, and your world goes dark.
~
When you blink your eyes open, the first thing youâre aware of is the way your vision swims. Your mind feels clouded, stuffed with cotton. You press your palm to your head, and even that feels muted.Â
âIâve made her mine now. Sheâll do exactly what I say. Does that make you upset?â Is what you think you hear, through the ringing of your ears. âLetâs see you put that god-killing sword to good use then, shall we?âÂ
âItâs. Magic.â You spit out the words as your hands press into the ground. Your legs cramp from the way youâre forcing them to stay down. âMihya. Run, please.âÂ
âAwh, worried about me?â Kaiser teases as he logs the odds. There is no water that swirls around you, so it begs to reason â you canât call it. The only weapon you have is a dagger.Â
Kaiser tilts his head until his neck cracks. âHave some faith in me, princess. Iâm not afraid, even against you.â
He breathes, in and out, until the calmness of battle seeps into him, raises his sword pointed right at you. âIâll win, even against you.âÂ
And then he reveals that cocky, surefire smirk. âYou should worry more about not dying yourself.âÂ
When you launch at him, it is without mercy, makes him realize how your kindness seeps into the way you fight. His weapon is bigger, larger, and he uses it to keep you at armâs length, to wrap around towards the enemy. But he sees his problem almost immediately. Like a puppet on strings, youâre protecting the enemy.Â
He knows it, the moment the prophecy solidifies into place in his mind. That feeling of being lost on a path, gone with the reigning down a light. The final puzzle piece in the picture.Â
You will die by the hands of the one you love most. So, it truly was this feeling, after all. Love. An aching thing, something so undoing. An open wound that can only be tendered by you.Â
For once, the prophecy is not a curse but a guiding starlight. He corners you with strike after strike, until youâre as close as can be to the enemy. And then he approaches you with no defense, lets you strike at him. In the same breath, his sword lands behind you and takes off the enemyâs head.Â
None of the fight felt as clear as this moment, when your blade presses into his heart.Â
He collapses, right in front of the throne with you on top of him. The throne that should be undoubtedly his, belonging to him as heir. Tears fall from your face before your mind can clear. Like you know, soul to soul, as his lifeform slips through your fingers. He brings his hand to cup your cheek, as he had wanted to do when you laid like this above him in the sand.Â
âI did not expect a death so gentle for myself.âÂ
His smile is so bittersweet that it aches all the way to the bottom of your heart. His hand slips down from your face as you finally come to.Â
âYou will not die on me.â You gasp out, a statement said with so much conviction that the silver bell of truth rings in return. You call to your water immediately, a stream so fast it cuts into your skin but you donât care.Â
A magic that can only be done once. You take the divine sword from the ground, aim the blade carefully at yourself â your own soul. Only this sword can make a cut like this, with the hand of the divine. You slice your wrist, and instead of blood, pure golden lifeforce pours out.Â
You separate your divinity from yourself, and you feed it to him. It will not turn him divine. You are only half-divine yourself, after all. What you can give is not nearly enough to turn a man into a God. But it will hold his soul in this world, let you do an unspeakable magic: an exchange of divine power for life, a process long enough for the water to heal his heart back together again. The hand you lay against his mouth shakes more and more with each second that your golden blood pours into him, but your other hand lays steady as ever over his heart, until you feel it beat once, twice. Hear him spurt out a breath.Â
You collapse on top of him before you can see him open his eyes.Â
~
âI see the prophecy has been completed.âÂ
When Kaiser wakes, thereâs a split second where he thinks he mightâve just ended up wherever souls go at the end of their line. Thereâs what must be a full-fledged goddess standing right over him. Itâs only your warm body splayed across his chest that tells him otherwise. His hands are lightning quick, sitting up and moving to your neck to check your pulse, only exhaling and relaxing once he feels it.Â
Golden threads extend down the sleeves of the goddessâ arms. Heâs seen the paintings. Fate itself stands before him.Â
âHow could you do this?â He makes his disdain clear, lacking any respect one might give to the queen of the gods herself.Â
âI am sorry.â She answers immediately, and that makes Kaiserâs eyes widen just slightly. âYour grievances, you may relay them to me, if you wish. There is a bigger picture at play here, bigger than you or the water sorceress or even myself. The threads of fate are not woven selfishly.âÂ
âYou gods up in your clouds play with the lives of mortals. That has always been written in history. But to her? To one of your own?â
âShe is more one of mine than most. The heir to the throne of the Gods, I wouldâve entrusted her with my life. Itâs why she complies with Fate in every life, without complaint.â
âSo she lends you her loyalty, and you take advantage of her. And you dare put yourselves above us?âÂ
âHeavy is the head that wears the crown. Heavy too, are my hands, that weave the golden threads. You and her are one of many that have suffered by my hand. For that, there is no apology I can give. What I can give, well⊠Would you like to hear your full prophecy, prince?â
Lone Emperor who covets the throne, You will die by the hands of the one you love most. Forsaken by all the Gods but one, Re-emerge, awaken, as the ruler you are meant to become.
In any other circumstance, he would be eager as ever to finally hear the full prophecy. But his eyes are only on you, your slumbering state as he holds you in his arms.Â
âWhat will become of her?â He asks quietly.Â
âShe will be a water sorceress, as she had initially been.âÂ
âShe will die, then? Like a human does?â
âAll things die, hero.â Hero. Thatâs what he is now, having been trial-passed. The title burns like bourbon down his throat. âEven the divine dies. But yes, she will die as a human, and be reborn again as the cycle permits.âÂ
âA life of such simplicity is not befitting of a woman like her.âÂ
âWho says it would be simple? Besides, she has gone through the trial of the divine once before. Donât you have faith she could do it again?âÂ
The trial of the divine. He had not known such a thing prior to you. But if anyone could pass it, it would be you.Â
âI will make her my wife. I care little for the words or respect of the gods, even a queen like yourself. But it is my duty to inform you. If she will have me, I will wed her as has been planned.âÂ
âThe prophecy is complete. What happens now is too inconsequential for me to put effort into. HoweverâŠâ she watches you, teartracks streaked down your cheeks. âIâm quite fond of her. I hope for her an easy life.âÂ
In a blink, her form disappears.Â
âKaiser!â Oliverâs voice echoes through the halls, taking big leaps with Noa to his side, skidding to a halt when he finally finds you both.Â
âThe goddess-âÂ
âShe lives,â Kaiser cups your head into his chest. âThough she is goddess no more. A trade. Not a fair one by any means.â His thumb traces across your cheek, a state of his so vulnerable it renders Oliver speechless.Â
Noa approaches the threshold where Oliver does not dare. He rests his hand on the crown of Kaiserâs head. âAnother chance at life is the greatest gift, and she has granted you as such. That is a debt youâll never be able to repay her for..âÂ
âIâll spend the rest of my life trying, then.âÂ
~
Itâs only in the aftermath, that you find out how deep in you truly were.
Kaiser takes a big inhale of the winter air. Itâs fresh and cold. And with him, the nation breathed a breath anew, and the trial laid in ashes under his feet.
Youâre facing the horizon of the sea when he finds you.Â
In the catch of the light, sometimes he swears he sees the divinity that had shimmered off of you before. Itâs almost hard to believe, with the ring of water that floats around you, that it had ever left you at all.Â
âWhat are you doing?â His voice is soft, as it always is with you now.Â
âRelearning the water.â
âWhat does it say?â
âThat I am still its mistress. Still a sorceress,â the water around you drops into the wet sand. âThat its loyalty with me is not dependent on divinity.â
He places a hand to the back of your neck, easing out the tensions there. âBut?â
You smile weakly. âI have to strain to hear her now.â
âGuess we canât do that spectacle again for our wedding.â He cracks a smile, something to ease the ache. âWater holds memory, right?âÂ
âThat, it does.âÂ
He grabs your hand, pulling you up and towards the waves. You yell for him, but the ocean crashes loudly around you both, and he drags you into the water anyways. Once youâre deep in enough that the waves drape over your knees, he pulls you in close.Â
âLet her bear witness, then.â He whispers it against your lips, brushing your hair away from your face. He kisses you, deep and with so much heart you might burst from it.Â
A prophecy unfolded, a fate changed, a life saved.Â
Thereâs a part of you that can feel an oncoming future. A sheathing that can block even the eyes of Gods. God-killing weapons that have descended from the heavens themselves. A potion that can cause madness in the minds of the divine. A war between mortals and Gods is coming, youâre sure of it.Â
But not in this life. In this life, you are a water sorceress, and he is a trial-passed hero. And like in every life, you find your way back to each other, every time.Â

A bit more of a semi-serious, more mellow comic per my usual slapstick but I wanted to draw a quieter, softer scene with Fiyero and Dorothy. Honestly, just thinking about this whole dynamic is fascinating and is ripe for tons of headcanons. Specifically, Fiyero getting used to the whole "scarecrow" thing.
Does he blame Elphaba? Obviously not. He's incredibly grateful and just happy to be alive. The dude was 100% ready to die for Elphaba so being spared a horrifying death was more than he could ever ask for.
But that doesn't mean he can't have complicated feelings about his new form. There's no doubt it took some used getting used to his new body, along with not being able to feel or eat or even sleep.
His line "You don't have to lie to me" when Elphaba tells him he's still beautiful speaks volumes. There's something so deeply poetically ironic about the handsome, swankified prince becoming something as humble and lowly as a scarecrow. As grateful as Fiyero may be (and he is very grateful) it must have been quite the blow to the ego to lose all of that. So, hate Elphaba? Never. Still have complicated feelings about all this? Oh, yes.
And let's face it, we all crave that juicy, juicy angst.
As for him and Dorothy, I am a huge believer of the "welp looks like I'm a Dad now" headcanon of their whole relationship. In which Fiyero does his absolute best to comfort Dorothy after she begins to have doubts about their whole journey.
The both of them have been through a lot and they both needed that hug a lot more than they realized.

Number 7's Number
pairing: Kenji sato x reader
summary: with a promotion on the line, you are thrilled to have the opportunity to speak to Kenji Sato during a press conference, but you get more from him than anticipated
an: based on this!
--------
Kenji Sato. Currently the most popular player in the league. A legend in the making, some say. A Golden Glove Award, a Silver Slugger Award, and personal stats that easily place him among the best players on the field, itâs no wonder he was a fan favorite. Not to mention he was easy on the eyes.
Needless to say, you jumped at the opportunity to attend his upcoming press conference. You gave yourself a onceover in the mirror for the final time and double checked your list of pre-prepared questions before grabbing your car keys and heading out. You rehearsed your questions the entire drive to the venue. You had a promotion riding on this, so youâd be mortified if you made a fool of yourself on national television.
A short drive later, you were in the parking lot, anxiously sitting in the driverâs seat and scrutinizing your makeup in a compact. And thank goodness you did, else you would have been talking to the most handsome man you had ever laid on with lipstick on your teeth. You took a deep breath to calm your nerves before exiting the vehicle and approaching the building. There were both signs and security to direct you to the room the press conference would be held in.
You followed the signs and reached a set of double doors through which you could hear the din of chatter. Other reporters, no doubt. You pushed open one of the doors and joined the throng, managing to get a seat near the front by some miracle. Once you were settled in your chair, you checked your watch. Plenty of time to spare.Â
After what must have been your fifth game of solitaire on your phone, there was finally commotion coming from a side door. You quickly shoved your phone in your pocket, all the roomâs attention now on the star athlete walking in. He exuded confidence with every step he took, and his cocky grin wouldâve made your knees weak had you been standing.
He took his seat behind the table at the front of the room, and the press conference commenced. You waited patiently for an opportunity to ask questions of your own. You stood when you had your chance, and his eyes locked on your form.
âWow, sheâs beautiful,â he murmured to himself.
Except, it wasn't to himself. The microphone was far more sensitive than he had thought, and it was heard loud and clear throughout the entire room. You felt your face flush with heat instantly. There was an increase in volume as well as a few camera flashes directed at you. He chuckled nervously, asking the obvious. âDid you hear that?â
âI did,â you answered simply, the shy smile that formed from his verbal slip-up somehow making you even prettier in his eyes.
He slapped his hands over his face, covering the redness that gave away just how embarrassed he was. Would it be rude of him to just leave in the middle of a conference?
When he finally peeked out from between his fingers, you were still standing, waiting patiently to ask questions. He decided then and there that he would find you when this was over and it would be his turn to ask questions. Specifically, he wanted to ask to trade phone numbers. Yâknow, just for potential future interviews. Definitely not for anything more.
â-Bonus-â
You woke the next morning to find a coworker you were friends with had sent you an articleââBaseball Star Ken Sato Calls Reporter Beautifulââcomplete with a photo that had been taken of you during the conference.
There was a message beneath the link. âAnything youâd like to share?â
You thought back to yesterday, still not quite believing the one and only Ken Sato had not only called you beautiful, but had even caught up with you afterwards just to ask for your number. It was enough to have you giggling and kicking your feet like a smitten schoolgirl. It was a moment shared between just the two of you, and a selfish part of you wanted to keep it that way. Any guilt you may have felt about withholding the sports worldâs current hot gossip was quickly washed away though with an incoming message.
âGoodmorning, beautiful. Tonkiâs tonight at 7? Iâll pick you up.â

the language of love isn't dead â dean winchester

cw : gn!reader, fluff, frenemies to lovers, petty arguments, ft. sam!, dean is annoying obviously <3, reader speaks latin (i used google translate and it is probably very wrong lol), kissing, one mention of a sexual innuendo, a few joking death threats, non-serious mentions of choking, poorly edited, 2.4K words. requested !
summary : you tend to compliment dean in the dead language of latin after fights so that he doesn't know what you really think about him.
MOVED BLOGS TO @sammyluvr !! no longer active on this blog! all fics can be found there!
âyouâre being ridiculous,â you frown at dean, arms crossed against your chest as you stare him down in tonightâs motel room.
âridiculous?â he parrots, indignant. âthis is baby weâre talking about. my car. you know, the â67 black chevy impala i would kill a man over?â
âyeah, i know her,â you reply, sarcastic in tone. âand your homicidal tendencies when it comes to her. iâm very familiar, dean.â you roll your eyes at him because you just canât help it. dean makes it very easy to get annoyed at, for a multitude of reasons.
reason number one, heâs annoying. reason number two, heâs very hot when heâs angry. reason number three, heâs very hot pretty much all the time. it does not help that sam got first dibs on the shower, so heâs still covered in a bit of grime and blood from the hunt you just walked away from. itâs his best look, aside from any time that he smiles.
âwell, then you should know that getting her perfectly tended to and polished leather seats dirty with wendyâs barbecue sauce is like a goddamn felony and i should sentence you to life of never even stepping foot near my car again,â he fires back, and if you didnât know him well, which you do, youâd venture to guess that heâs joking. heâs not.
you groan in frustration. âfor the last time, i did not get barbecue sauce on your car seats,â you insist.
âi saw you sneaking fries before we got to the room,â he counters, narrowing his eyes at you. âyou could have gotten grease on the leather too.â
âi ate two fries dean, and i was careful. i used a napkin and i did not open my barbecue sauce!â you spit back at him. you canât believe youâre arguing about this right now. except that it is so believable and so like you and him. itâs not like either one of you is going to back down, certainly not about something so petty and meaningless.
âthen how come i found some in the back seat?â he says for what feels like the millionth time.
you throw your hands up in the air. âi donât know! i donât even use my barbecue sauce for my fries. thereâs no reason for me to have opened it!â you argue, huffing out a frustrated sigh. âand how do you even know it was barbecue sauce?â
âit looked like barbecue sauce, it wasnât there yesterday, youâre the only one who orders it and the only one whoâs sat in the back since then. therefore, barbecue sauce,â he admonishes, crossing his arms over his chest to punctuate his point. you canât help but laugh at him a little bit. he just sounds so ridiculous.
âwell then, letâs say it was barbecue sauceâwhich it wasnât. did the leather get damaged?â you ask pointedly.
âthat doesnât matter!â he practically rages, taking a step towards you. god, heâs beautiful and you hate him for it (you really, really love him for it). âwhat matters is that you got it dirty!â
âjesus, dean! just drop it, your car is fine!â you chastise, your voice raising a little in volume as you take another step towards him. you can see his light freckles better now. theyâre so goddamn pretty it makes you want to choke him.
âjust drop it?â he repeats, fuming. âi will not âjust drop it.â this is about baby. i canât âjust dropâ something about baby! how can i even trust you enough to let you in my car again, huh?â this is the point where heâs serious, but not that serious. thereâs clear frustration and anger in his voice, but heâs stuck with you and he knows it. and when he asks that final question, his volume lessens and he shrugs. heâs looking for you to grovel or offer something to appease him. the question is whether or not to give him that. your instinct is, of course, to not. you let out a huff of breath.
âwell, maybe because iâm excellent company in the car,â you suggest, a gloating tone making its way into your voice. âand i like your music better than sam does. which means we always outnumber him. thatâs very important.â
heâs unimpressed, clearly. âyou gotta come up with something better than that, sweetheart,â he goads.
you curl your lip at him and roll your eyes. âyou absolutely suck, dean,â you state. he raises his eyebrows and you groan and roll your eyes yet again. thatâs not the word to use around him unless you want a sexual innuendo thrown in your face. âyou are absolutely horrible, dean,â you amend.
he laughs at you and his annoyance mostly subsides. âwhich means i have no problem getting back at you tenfold for getting goddamn barbecue sauce on my car seat.â
âte respicere bonum cum iratus es, ita dampnas,â you grumble, shaking your head and glaring at him. like tradition, you end the argument with a certain latin phrase full of choice words.Â
now dean, sweet, lovely, silly, gorgeous dean, has no idea what youâre saying. he doesnât care to learn enough latin for that. he doesnât need to know, he thinks. your tone of voice says it all. he thinks those choice words are the type that one fills an insult with. today you tell him, âyou look so damn good when youâre angry.â which, funnily enough, is not an insult.
itâs the perfect way of looking him in the eye and just spitting it out. you get to say without consequence what youâre thinking, what youâre feeling, what you want to tell him so badly. itâs not the same as him knowing, but it helps. it eases your tension until the next time, it softens the blow a little.
sam fails to hold in his laugh behind you. you whirl around and glare at him, freshly dressed and out of the shower. you hadnât even heard him leave the bathroom. narrowing your eyes at him, you tell your long time best friend, say something and you die. he puts his hands up in surrender, still laughing at you a little.
âshut up,â you grumble, then turn back to dean with a scowl.
âwhat was that little nerd exchange?â dean teases, realizing sam understood what you said.
ânothing,â you glower. âiâm showering now!âÂ
dean throws his hands up in protest. âyouâre making me shower last after getting barbecue sauce on my car?â
âdean, i swear to the lord in heaven, if youââ
âfine, fine!â he relents, the sarcasm and teasing still clearly present in his voice. âyouâre right, you should shower first, you probably have barbecue sauce all over ya.â you raise your fist in a threat and itâs deanâs turn to put his hands up in surrender. âiâm just saying!â
âstop saying!â you groan. âjustâ stop talking, iâm gonna lose my mind.â if i have to stare at your gorgeous face and listen to your gorgeous voice for another second i will go crazy. you sigh heavily. god, you wonder if you could survive not kissing him. monsters and demons and all the strange shit in the world⊠thatâs fine. it sucks but, jesus, at least you know how to deal with them.
but doing it all with dean? you have no idea how to deal with that. so far, itâs by arguing with him, complimenting him in a dead language, and keeping him at an armâs length. and so far, itâs not working out too well, because you still want him. you still want him to want you back. you still wish and wish and wish that the language of love isnât dead, not for you and him, not yet, at least.
maybe the shower will help. this motel doesnât have the worst showers; the water pressure is decent and the water stays hot for a while longer than some others.
youâre not annoyed when you finish, at least, not about his stupid accusations of you getting condiments on his car seats. unfortunately, you are still annoyed about how attracted you are to him. even more unfortunate, you suppose, is that youâre attracted to him, period.
you sigh because you canât bring yourself to actually try not to be. not that anyone can reverse feelings, but you let your feelings run rampant, more than you should sometimes. you let him eat away at your heart like a goddman movie zombie thatâs too stupid to remember it eats brains. then, you figure that the thought of him eats away at your brain too, because he messes with your rationality sometimes.
his eyes are on you as you leave the bathroom and you wonder if samâs tattled on you. when you shoot him a look he shrugs and shakes his head. youâre not convinced, but you let it slide. you plop down on the pullout couch bed and pack your old clothes away, ignoring deanâs heavy gaze. only when the door to the bathroom opens and closes do you flop against the bed with a heaving sigh.
âi hate your brother,â you grumble, barely loud enough for sam to hear as the muffled sounds of the shower turning on hits your ears. you turn to your side and curl up, not even bothering to pull the sheet over yourself.
you canât see sam, but you hear him scoff from his spot on his own bed. âsure you do,â he quips, completely sarcastic.
âno, i really, really do,â you insist, not meaning a word of it.
âwell, he hates you too, then,â he answers, voice heavy with implication. you know what he means because he knows what you mean. hate, of course, is love.
âno, he doesnât,â you counter, sad about it. you bet that no oneâs ever sounded so disappointed that someone doesnât âhateâ them.
âyouâre hopeless.â samâs probably shaking his head at you as he reads the words on the book in his lap.
âiâm hopeless,â you sigh.
âąâąâą
itâs not until a few days later that dean confronts you about your little latin digs at him. sam did tattle, only because heâs tired of your pining, but dean wonât tell you that. heâs smart enough to know youâll end up with your hands around samâs neck if you end up finding out, and heâs not trying to have his⊠person strangle his little brother.
âhey, idiot,â he starts, the word layered with affection. âwhy do you always insult me in latin? sorta feels like you lose the point of insulting someone to their face like that.âÂ
heâs leaning against the hood of his car, beer in hand like always. itâs oddly uncommon to find yourself like this; outside, alone with him. the motelâs not busy and there are barely any other cars in the parking lot, and even less people. itâs just you and him as far as you can see. the night air is mild, cicadas singing as summer begins to slip away.
âwell⊠maybe the point is that you know iâm saying something about you, but you donât know what,â you shrug, sort of proud of the smooth answer. youâre not even lying. inside, youâre panicking a bit. this is dangerous territory.
âthe stuff youâre saying is that horrible, huh?â his tone suggests a joke. his eyes suggest otherwise. it makes you pause.Â
how unfair is it, to the both of you, to lie? to even joke that youâd say such mean things about him? about dean winchester, whom you know sort of hates himself. who has just two people by his side, you and sam.
and you, who only argues with him because itâs easier than being nice. you, who deserves what you want but wonât let yourself even try to have it.
âno,â you sigh out. âiâm not saying horrible stuff about you.â you donât look at him, you donât mess around. you take the joking in his voice and strip it away. you take the look in his eyes and put it in yours. it makes him look at you, for once. itâs easy to imagine his eyebrows raising, his lips caught somewhere between his signature smirk and a curious frown. ânot in latin, anyways,â you add, letting a huff of laughter leak into your bitter voice.
dean keeps looking at you. you know youâre supposed to explain after saying something like that, but youâd much rather not.
âno?â he asks finally. now you have to say something more.
âno,â you confirm, still staring at the trees across the street instead of him. the street lights are orange in color, and it feels either cruel or hopeful that itâs such a beautiful night. âi⊠say it in latin because itâs something nice. and you can⊠ignore this, if you want. i say it in latin because i like you a lot, dean. yâknow, more than a stupid, fucking friend.â you roll your eyes a bit, like youâre upset with yourself. then you swallow thickly and ignore the fact that you can see him in your peripheral vision. he doesnât look like he normally does. he doesnât look angry.
dean is torn between teasing you and kissing you. you sound mad about the fact that you have feelings for him, like you wish you didnât. âmore than a stupid, fucking friendâ is a real funny way to phrase things, if heâs honest with himself. the question is, does he say that to you, or does he look for something better to say? heâs not good with âbetter things to say,â whatever that might be.
âa little aggressive for a love confession, no?â his voice isnât even that teasing. itâs sort of gentle. he wants to slap his hand over his mouth for saying that godforsaken four letter word. you had said âlike.â itâs freudian slip, he supposes, since he loves you.
âthis isnât funny, dean,â you murmur, voice sort of defeated. and yet, you hear it. itâs not funny to him either. he wasnât trying to be funny, he was trying not to feel. he was trying to say at least something, because he was having trouble coming up with anything else.
âi know,â he relents. he draws in a deep breath. âwill you look at me?â your lips part, then close. you blink a few times. you turn your head and look at him. god, he loves you back. heâs got to, or thereâs no other way to explain how he looks at you.
and thereâs definitely no other way to explain him kissing you. he looks you right in the eyes and he leans in until his lips are touching yours.Â
his eyes flutter closed, yours follow. you kiss him back, he kisses harder. the language of love isnât dead. all you had to do was say something.

What about Charles x girlfriend where they spend the day on the yacht with friends, but Charles is busy admiring his gf

A Day on the Riviera

The sun shone brightly on the CĂŽte dâAzur as the group of six gathered on the pristine yacht bobbing gently in the azure waters. The laughter and chatter filled the air, the perfect blend of friendship, love, and relaxation. The yacht was as luxurious as it was spacious, but the real charm was the people on board: Charles, his girlfriend Yn, Carlos with Rebecca, and Pierre with Kika.
âąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâąâą
Charles couldnât take his eyes off Yn. She was sitting with Rebecca and Kika, the three of them engrossed in conversation and giggling over something Rebecca had just said. Yn was wearing a flowy sundress that complemented her perfectly, her hair catching the sunlight and her smile radiant enough to rival the sun.
âShe looks like a literal goddess,â Charles murmured, half to himself, half to Carlos, who was standing beside him.
Carlos raised an eyebrow and smirked. âMate, youâve been staring at her for the past hour. Youâre obsessed.â
âAnd proud of it,â Charles shot back, not even trying to deny it.
Pierre overheard and joined in the teasing. âLet the man live, Carlos. Heâs clearly whipped.â Pierre chuckled, sipping his drink. âBut seriously, Charles, blink once in a while.â
Charles rolled his eyes, though his gaze remained fixed on Yn. âShe deserves it. Look at her. Sheâs the most beautiful woman in the world.â
âAlright, Romeo, we get it.â Carlos nudged him playfully. âBut donât forget, weâre here too.â
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Meanwhile, the girls were having a conversation of their own. Kika leaned closer to Yn, resting her chin in her hand. âYouâre glowing, Yn. I swear, if you told me you were royalty, Iâd believe it.â
Rebecca nodded enthusiastically. âSheâs right. Youâre like a princess straight out of a fairytale. Charles is so lucky.â
Yn blushed, waving them off. âStop it, you two. Youâre making me shy!â
âNo, no, no!â Kika exclaimed, her eyes wide. âYou deserve every compliment. Honestly, the way Charles looks at you? Iâd trade my soul for that kind of love.â
Rebecca laughed. âSame here. And the way heâs been snapping pictures of you all day? Girl, heâs obsessed.â
âSpeaking of whichâŠâ Yn trailed off as Charles finally broke away from the boys and started making his way toward her.
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Charles approached with a grin, phone in hand. âLadies, I hope you donât mind if I steal Yn for a moment.â
âSteal her? Charles, sheâs already yours,â Rebecca teased, nudging Yn playfully.
Yn stood up, smiling at Charles as he reached for her hand. âWhat is it?â
âNothing,â he said softly, his green eyes sparkling. âI just wanted to take some pictures of you. You look... breathtaking.â
Rebecca and Kika exchanged knowing looks and let out dramatic sighs. âUgh, goals,â Kika whispered, making Yn laugh.
Charles led Yn to the bow of the yacht, where the view of the sea stretched endlessly. He positioned her against the golden sunlight and began snapping pictures. âJust like that,â he murmured, âYouâre perfect.â
âYouâre being ridiculous,â Yn said, though her smile gave away how much she adored his attention.
âNo,â Charles said, lowering the phone to look at her directly. âIâm being honest. I donât know what I did to deserve you.â
Yn stepped closer, wrapping her arms around his neck. âYouâre sweet, but you donât have to keep flattering me, you know.â
âItâs not flattery if itâs true,â Charles replied before leaning in to kiss her. It was soft and tender, the kind of kiss that spoke volumes about how deeply he cared for her.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Back at the seating area, Carlos and Pierre watched the scene unfold.
âCharles is laying it on thick today,â Carlos commented with a grin.
Pierre chuckled. âHey, you canât blame the guy. Heâs head over heels. Itâs kind of cute, actually.â
Rebecca leaned back in her seat, crossing her arms. âHonestly, if Charles keeps this up, heâs setting a new standard for boyfriends everywhere.â
Kika nodded. âRight? Imagine being loved like that every single day.â
Carlos feigned a pout. âYou two better not start comparing us to Charles. Weâve got our own charm, you know.â
Rebecca smirked. âOf course you do, cariño. But admit it, Charles has set the bar high.â
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Charles and Yn returned to the group, hand in hand. Yn looked flushed but happy, and Charles had an unmistakable look of pride on his face.
âHave you finished your impromptu photoshoot?â Pierre teased.
âFor now,â Charles replied easily, pulling Yn closer to his side. âBut only because I have the most beautiful subject to work with.â
Rebecca and Kika let out matching âawws,â while Carlos rolled his eyes playfully. âYouâre making the rest of us look bad, man.â
âGood,â Charles shot back with a grin. âYou should all treat your girlfriends like queens.â
Pierre raised his glass. âTouchĂ©. To queens and whipped boyfriends, then.â
Everyone laughed, clinking their glasses together. The day carried on with more laughter, playful teasing, and plenty of love in the air. As the sun began to set over the Riviera, Charles leaned into Ynâs ear and whispered, âEvery moment with you is perfect. You know that, right?â
Yn looked up at him, her heart swelling. âAnd you make every moment feel like a dream.â
For Charles, there was no teasing in the world that could make him care. Yn was his everything, and he wasnât afraid to show it.

Slim Pickins (LN4)
Lando Norris x fem!photograpgher!reader
Summary: In which, she can't find a guy who's jacked and kind. Until she does.
Warnings: this is all fictional!, reader has a crush on Oscar in the beginning, Lily is an angel as always, swearing, bad jokes, suggestive at moments, Lando being a fuckboy, this is the end of this seriess :( It was so much fun, holy shit.
Wordcount: 9.1k
Masterlist, Short n'Sweet Series

Bright lights. Cars flashing by in a second before her. She made them brighter - more colourful. She made them come alive in a way only pictures could. She made them her own. Adding the preset she usually used and adjusting whatever needed to be adjusted. Whether it be the brightness or whites, darks, shadows, temperature.
The pillow behind her back made the position she was in feel more comfortable than it actually would be. Hunched over her laptop, the light of it illuminating her face, glasses on top of her nose. She had to get the pictures ready before midnight. Headphones over her ears to drown out the noises from the room next to hers. Girlish moans fighting the wall to get through her. But she wouldnât let them. The loud volume of the music made it impossible for anything to get through to her. Not even the loud banging sound that was heard from the hallway.
Oscar furiously knocked his fist against the room of his teammate. He had a long night already, being dragged out by Lando for a couple of hours beforehand, exploring some clubs and bars and girls. It wasnât in any of his interest. He had a girlfriend which he loved, he wasnât in need for more than one. Not like someone else.
In the corner of his eye he saw a shadow slip out of the room next to Landoâs. He felt sorry for the girl, having to hear some kind of animal like Lando after a few drinks and in a horny state. It was unbearable to sleep at that.
âHe wonât answer you any time soon,â the girl said, putting the headphones around her neck, stopping the music that was once playing in order to hear him in case he should answer. She hoped he would. She loved his voice. The soothing feeling of it, almost giving you the feeling of his mouth travelling up your skin. Speaking closely; calm.
âYeah,â he agreed with her, snapping her out her daydreams. âBut, thought I might as well try since I canât sleep now.â He crossed his arms over his body, stepping towards her. Even if only a few centimetres, it was something. Still though keeping a respectful distance between them to not over step any lines.
How can anybody be so perfect? she thought. Her eyes trailing over his face, following his cheekbones and the bridge of his nose.
âNo luck, apparently,â she said, leaning against the door frame next to her.
He nodded his head again, looking at Landoâs hotel room door once again. âWhere are you off to now in the middle of the night?â
âJust getting a snack before going back to work,â she answered, holding up the wallet in her hand.
âYouâre still working?â Oscar always believed that after 8 pm everyone - beside overnight jobs - stopped working, leaving the night to take over. Apparently not.
âThatâs the disadvantage of putting it off for the whole night to meet up with friends. And now Iâm in a rush and immense need of coffee,â she told him. She felt her eyes already wanting to fall shut.
The answer made him laugh, a breathy sound escaping his mouth. The amusement written clearly on his face. Y/n looked up at him at the sound of his voice a smile on her face, though it quietly faded as she saw the almost brother-like behavior radiating from him. He knew how girls could be, putting off everything until the last second to have a little more fun in life. He knew it all too well. His sister demonstrating her tactic more than often. The feeling of him seeing her as nothing more than just an additional sister weighted her down, the truth knocking on her door, telling her once again that there would be nothing more. She knew he was in a relationship. she wouldnât wanna change that. Not after seeing how he talked about Lily, how he would mention whenever he could, how he still blushed at the mere mention of her name even after so many years of dating. The jealousy taking over the joy of being friends with him.
Though, the bigger hole she couldnât fill, was that she didnât want only him as a partner in particular, she wanted someone like him. Some guy who was willing to commit without fear, some guy who made her feel loved no matter how far away they would be from one another, some guy who saw her as she was, not what he wanted her to be.
It was a never ending story of disappointment in her life when it came to dating: finding a cute guy, going on a date, fucking, being told that it would only be something casual. What were guys so afraid of? Why did they make themselves look so insecure and frightened when it came to relationships? What did it even mean: casual? What was the purpose of dating casually if nothing would come out of it in the end?
Why did guys have to be so goddamn ashamed of love?
The door next to them opened, Lando standing in the doorway. Hair messy, grey sweatpants thrown on, his pupils were deflated, his breath still a bit heavy, eyes dancing between the pair in front of his door. A girl was heard inside, calling out to him with a drunk giggle, before she quietened down and fell asleep. He, himself, was hanging on to the door frame in a drunk manner. His eyes almost falling shut any second.
âWhat are you doing here?â he stammered, his eyes focusing on the girl for a bit longer before he let his head fell against the wood frame tiredly. His head was throbbing already.
âGetting coffee,â she answered.
âThinking about handing in a noise complaint,â Oscar answered dryly, making the girl laugh at his answer.
Landoâs eyes flitted over to her frame, softening at the sight until he remembered she didnât laugh because of him, she never did. She never found him funny, or so he thought. Truth been told, she did like his humour, finding it rather absurd than funny, but still. The only thing holding her back from laughing was the general distaste she had for the person telling the joke. Lando was the definition of everything she despised in a guy. He was a playboy, never taking on anything serious and having more than one girl at once by his side. It made her almost sick.
âSorry for having a life,â Lando answered annoyed, staring at Oscar with bored eyes.
âYou know not everything in life is about sex, right?â the girl asked him, growing more cold with him than she did while talking to Oscar.
âHow would you know?â Lando mumbled, ready to head back to bed without further thinking about his behavior.
Y/n narrowed her eyes at him. Oscar looked between the pair. He knew they werenât particularly fond of each other, preferring to distance themselves when possible, but this - the annoyance at the otherâs mere existence or voice - was something he never thought to experience. Lando slipped back into the room, closing the door and leaning against the door. He could still hear them talk, bidding the other goodnight, Oscar apologizing for his behavior, Y/n waving it off as âclassical Landoâ and probably rolling her eyes at the memory of their interaction. He could hear Oscar telling her, that he had no idea why he acted like that around her and that he didnât do it with anyone else. To which she only replied, that it was because of the same reason she couldnât handle him for very long: they were too different to properly see eye to eye. She also said, that she was fine with that and that she even preferred it in that way.
What were they too different in? Lando couldnât help but wonder about everything they had in common and everything they hadnât as he laid in bed that night, wide awake. The alcohol breaking down, making him able to think more clearly. They both liked photography, racing, friends, family, travelling. They were both adventurous, both keen to learn new things whenever they could, staying up late, going out, staying in every once in a while. He liked parties, she preferred alone time - maybe even with a possible lover. And thatâs when it hit him. When his eyes drifted over to the girl laying in his bed, sleeping tight, naked. He liked the company of people, the roaring feeling of a new experience every night. She liked the image of having one person to feel excited about forever, stepping in and out of the house with them, holding hands, kissing softly in the morning, telling secrets, fears and dreams.
But both didnât like falling asleep alone.
While he coped with it by never being alone - even when it wasnât the same as how heâd want it - she let the weight of loneliness heave down her chest. She let herself feel.
Taking a shower at 7 in the morning and leaving his hotel room shortly after, Lando walked out on the still quiet streets, camera in his hands. He caught barely any sleep, always wondering instead. Worrying. About everything he feared he couldnât make right anymore, that everything he did wrong was already too fucked up to make it stable again. The camera gave him a sense of security, being a reminder that even only one photo was the reminder of something good. But coming back an hour later with his SD-card still empty he lost all hope for a good day. Being depressed in the morning made you feel bad the whole day. That was just the way life goes. He had to accept it. He had to feel it.
With his head bowed low, gaze focused on his shoes rather than in front of him, Lando soon smashed into a body. Catching whoever it was before they could fall down. A light surge of hope rushed through his veins, thumbing to his heart as he imagined it being Y/n. Looking up, he was faced with the girl he went to bed last night. Eyes wide, mouth open in shock. Neither thought it would be the other. She mumbled a little âthank you,â offered him a smile and then hurriedly headed out the hotel, climbing in the uber that stood at the side walk, waiting for her.
âLovely reunion,â Y/n commented sarcastically as she walked past him. Heading out as well.
She almost slipped away from him until he caught up with her step, exiting the building again. His hands stuffed in his pocket, camera dangling from his wrist. âWhere are you going?â he asked. They walked down the street he came from before.
The girl stopped walking, holding up her own camera and taking a picture. It was a way smaller one then she normally used. A digicam instead of a professional camera. He had never seen it before, though it was rather an older one.
Indirectly answering his question, she asked one as well. âWhere were you coming from?â They continued walking down the street.
Lando held up his own camera to her, not taking a picture like she did in the process. She knew he liked photography as well, finding his jpg insta account rather quickly after doing a deep dive into him on her first day of work - canât a girl be prepared? He took good pictures, some great ones even, impressing her more than once when she saw that he had posted new ones. Always interested in others talent and passion, she started conversing with him about the topic at hand.
âWhat pictures did you take then until now?â She asked eagerly, waiting for him to hand his camera over to her.
âNone,â he answered, making her frown.
âWhat do you mean ânoneâ?â She never understood how someone could take zero pictures in a new place. Always being the one finding beauty in the ordinary she felt lucky for such a talent.
Lando switched on his camera and showed her the 0/0 and No Picture Available lining his gallery screen. It almost seemed like mockery in his eyes, how it made him look so boring. She was finally interested in what he was doing and now he had nothing to show her. Y/n frowned at the sight in front of her, her eyes slipping from the screen to the person in front of her. Shaking her head in dismissal of his failure. She couldnât just sent him back his own way now, could she? Not when she noticed the dark circles under his eyes. Not when she saw the look in his eyes, a rather hopeful one for her allowing him to stay. And when he looked at her like that, how could she deny him? It wasnât too hard to push away the persona he had at night and at least try to see the version Oscar had told her about - the version almost everybody else told her about.
Lando was sure she would sent him away, sent him back to the hotel. He was ready to turn around and go, leaving her to her peace.
âLooks like we need to change that,â she said, before beginning to walk again.
After looking at her back perplexed for a second, he quickly followed her. Catching up with her quick step. Catching a photo of her figure while doing so.
âWhat do you shoot besides fast cars on track?â Lando asked, intrigued at seeing her walking through the streets and mostly not even looking twice at the cars driving by.
âMen,â she joked, smirking at him from the side. Seeing the septic look in his eyes, she added, âJust kidding. Only in America.â
Lando cracked a smile at her humour, but the lack of laugh leaving her worried. âSorry, was it too much?â She asked, turning her head to see him smiling at her, shaking his head. Most people didnât found her funny. Most guys she was out with thought she was being mean and arrogant, when mostly it was just sarcasm.
âNo, donât worry,â he assured her. âI like your humour.â
âWell, thank you,â she said, hands behind her back, clamping together. Her thumbnail pressing into her palm to keep her from smiling too much. Heâs not a good guy, donât let yourself be fooled, she reminded herself. He wouldnât want any more from you than all these other douchebags in your phone.
âI mostly just shoot whatever looks beautiful, anything that captures my eye,â she answered again, truthful this time. Lando nodded at her answer, he felt the same, always photographing whatever looked good, never because he felt the need to stick to a certain type of object or action.
âYeah, itâs kind of the best way to go at it, right?â Lando said, scratching the back of his neck. âI mean, why capture something forever if you donât like it?â
âExactly,â she agreed with him. Her voice being barely a whisper now, thoughts coming through she wished to have pushed far away.
Whatâs the purpose of staying if you donât even like me? A sentence she will never forget. The perfect guy - kind, sweet, alive, nice, respectful, hot - turned out to be another disappointment. That was a year ago, shortly after she was accepted by McLaren as a photographer. She told him about the news, thinking heâd be happy to hear her getting the job. Instead he accused her of not loving him because she would have to travel so much with all the races and not caring about how he felt about that. Was she really so unlovable to not get the one she wanted? The good guy. The one that felt as much a friend as a boyfriend. Was there really no way she could get someone she could truly love?
âAre you okay?â Lando asked, sensing her now stiff body and her sunken mood. Putting his hand on her shoulder to make her stop walking and look at him. He wore a frown on his face, some kind of worry flashing through his eyes when she faced him fully, eyes connecting.
âIâm fine, donât worry,â she said, mustering a small smile.
Lando learned that, unless theyâre your partner, you shouldnât pressure anyone into talking about something they didnât openly talk about first.
The longer they walked, the more the streets came alive. But she barely cared about them, she took pictures of the buildings. Doors, windows, architecture. That was what she thought had to be remembered, the things human build and that would eventually fall apart because of them.
âYou donât really like photographing people, do you?â Lando asked as they sat down in a cafe, getting a coffee before walking home again.
They were already two hours outside, finding new streets every few minutes and just walking wherever light shone. When a street would be too dark for her liking, she would just keep on walking, ignoring Lando who promised to protect her. She only said, that she didnât really trust his martial art skills, so she refused.
âI do, sometimes,â she argued with him. Her eyes turning sharp and a frown came on her face. âI just prefer everything else.â
âAnd still you photograph me and Osc after every race,â he smirked at her.
Y/nâs face turned red, her eyes widening in surprise that he noticed. She wasnât assigned to take photos of them after races all too often, being used more to take pictures of the cars throughout the race, qualifying or practice. Still, she would often use her camera to take pictures of them from behind everyone else. Catching angles and moments the assigned photographers werenât so likely to catch themselves. They were focused on the Instagram account, while she was more focused on sending them to their families for enjoyment and memories. Sometimes she would sent them to Oscar as well, so that he could show them to his girlfriend. A bitter sweet reminder how he saw her.
After being left with silence, Lando continued, leaning forward to talk quieter. âYou sent them to my mom, my dad, even Osc, but never me. Why?â
âI donât have your number,â she said simply, not having another explanation. It was the truth, but she also wasnât too keen on having his number in her phone.
âI could give it to you,â he suggested.
âYou could,â she said back.
She couldnât get the perfect guy, but Lando was willing to take her. And maybe that could be enough.
âIt was nice today,â Lando said, stopping in front of her room at the hotel. Hands tucked in his pockets.
He took about 130 photos, a third of them being of her. The girl standing in front of him, smiling sweetly and nodding her head.
âYeah,â she agreed with him. âIt wasnât too bad.â
They stood opposite each other for a while until Y/n cleared her throat.
âIâll see you later tonight at the dinner?â She asked, reminding him off the plans the team had for the evening.
His eyes widened in remembering, âOscar said, that you wouldnât be there.â
âI wasnât going to go, but my plans got cancelled, so I donât have anything better to do.â She shrugged.
âOK, then Iâll see you tomorrow.â
She waved at him before closing the door as soon as she put a foot in her room again. Leaning against the wooden surface, she lets out a sigh. How did that happen?
Y/n pulled out her phone to look at the time, instead she was greeted by a dozen missed calls. All of them belonging to one particular person, Johanna, her best friend since kindergarten.
Calling back, she heard screaming on the other line: âWhere were you? I thought you were kidnapped and killed. Holy shit, girl, donât do this to me ever again.â
âIâm sorry,â she laughed at her friends exaggeration. âI was just out, taking pictures like usual.â
âFor how long?â
âAbout 3 hours, I think? Maybe only two, I donât really know,â she answered, falling down on the mattress.
âOK,â she squealed. âWho was with you?â
âI wasnât with anybody,â Y/n defended herself, biting her lip to keep herself from saying more. To not unravel her lies.
âSure you werenât,â Johanna said, knowing she would get through to her in some way. âYou wouldâve answered my calls if you were alone, because youâd have your headphones on. But you didnât. So, who were you with? Was it Oscar? Did you finally get him?â
âI was with Lando,â she confessed. Unable to keep anything from her.
Johanna gasped in shock, sucking in her breath while she spoke, âNo.â
âWe met in the foyer of the hotel and he just came back from being outside, taking pictures. Or at least, attempting to do so, because when I asked him about it, he confessed that he had taken no pictures. So, I offered him to walk with me again and we did. Taking pictures.â
âFor 3 hours?â her friend asked, knowing how she could get annoyed very easily when having to pass by photo-possibilities in case of annoying the person she was walking with. That was why she always went out alone, until now.
âFor 3 hours,â Y/n confirmed.
âWas he an asshole?â Being on the receiving end of most of the girlâs rants about how annoying Lando could be, she couldnât stop herself from asking. Some things were just too bizarre to not be curious about.
âSurprisingly no. He was really nice, actually. We talked and when we got back, I asked him if he came to the dinner tonight.â
âHe probably said no, because he hates those things.â
âHe tried confirming that I came as well, because I actually had plans. Apparently Oscar told him about it.â
âYou had plans? Why didnât you tell me about those plans?â
Y/n sighed, not eager to share the news. âI was supposed to go on a date with this guy, nothing serious in the future, just something to get my fixings, you know? He canceled this morning, saying that he was back with his ex.â
âWhat an ass,â the girl on the other line said. She never understood why Y/n had to have such a bad taste in men, particularly because she deserved so much more. âMaybe you could use Lando to get your fixings?â she suggested, trailing off at the end of her sentence.
âIâm not gonna use him,â she said, rolling her eyes.
âWhat does he do with all the other girls? There isnât much to it. Itâs all the same, just youâll get slut shamed if youâd do the same. Turn the tables,â she said.
Y/n shouldnât listen to her, she knew that. Being the friend who had been through the most toxic relationships, and only barely holding onto her sanity because of the situationship she had at the moment, she wasnât someone who should give out advice like it were pennies from her pocket.
âIâll text you when I come back from the dinner, alright?â Y/n settled on the agreement with herself of leaving today to let things settle, maybe sleeping about it was the wiser choice.
The knock on her door was a signal that she should already be dressed and ready to go. Instead, she stood in front of the mirror for 30 minutes already, pondering if she should wear a jacket or not. She didnât know whether they sat outside or not, most likely not. Shrugging the extra clothing off and throwing it on the bed, Y/n made her way to the door, expecting Oscar to wait for her.
âLando, what are you doing here?â She asked the boy who leaned against the wall next to the door, fidgeting with his fingers. Waiting for her, she supposed.
âWaiting for you,â he confirmed. âI thought we could get there together.â
âI was actually already meeting up with Oscar.â
âOh yeah, he had something he needed to talk about with Lily, so he will come after,â Lando said, scratching the back of his neck as if in need for a good answer to appear.
âOh, okay,â the girl said, slightly disappointed, before turning around and locking her room.
âYou look good,â Lando commented as they walked down the hall.
Standing in front of the elevator, she turned her head towards him. âThank you. You donât look too bad yourself.â
The dinner went by in mostly silence, besides Landoâs unusual presence and therefore also the unusual amount of bad jokes and laughter filled heated discussions about racing or video games. It wasnât as irradiating as she thought it would be and the topics werenât as confusing to her foreign mind as she expected them to be. All because, whenever Lando saw her eyebrows knit together and her lips parting in confusion, he would explain the subject at hand to her in the smallest detail to really make her understand what the conversation was about. Making it easier for her to follow than normally.
They stayed behind, engrossed in conversation with whoever was willing to talk about a certain topic, until even the last engineer decided to head back to their room and get their rest. Now, they were sat next to each other at the big table, all alone. The restaurant wasnât empty by far, still enough people were talking and maybe even eating. Everyone paid for their own food and drinks, so now the only left open bill was theirs.
âI enjoyed going out to take picture with you today,â Lando confessed into their silence, sipping on his espresso.
âI did too,â she said back, surprised at her soft tone and faint smile. âYou werenât half as annoying as normally.â
He laughed at her answer, her smile growing bigger at the sound of it. âI didnât expect any other answer.â
Their laughter died down with every passing moment, only smiles remaining, as the slow jazz music filled the place again. Cutlery on porcelain skimming through the air and conversation from different tables surrounding them once more. But in their heads, they heard none of that. All they were aware of was their heartbeat and the comfort they found so suddenly in the other. She felt his hand grazing her leg and he could feel her skin passing by under his fingertips.
âMaybe we could do it again in another city.â
âThat would mean that you have to arrive earlier and spent less time in Monaco,â she reminded him, knowing how most drivers - him included - preferred to arrive at track the night before media day. He would never find the time go out with her and explore the city then.
âFor you, Iâm wiling to do that.â Lando leaned closer, his back against the chair he was sat on, but his hand now on her thigh.
âWhat a charming man you are,â she said back, mocking him in a way, but her cheeks still turned red at the contact.
âItâs natural,â he shrugged nonchalantly.
She scoffed at his behavior, turning her head away for a second before responding, âAnd the people on the internet call you Lando Norizz. I really understand it now.â
âVery funny,â he commented back. âStill I got you blushing.â
âItâs just very hot in here,â she brushed it off simply.
âProbably because of me, right?â
There it was again, the reminder why she couldnât stand him.
âDream on, Norizz.â
âI will.â
They drank their espresso before heading back to the hotel, walking side by side. With the restaurant being only one entrance next to the hotel, it made it all easier and faster to get back.
âHave a good night, Y/n,â Lando said as they reached her hotel room.
âGood night, Lando,â she said, her hand on the door handle and her mind gambling whether she should play the game or let it be. Turn the tables. She did, kissing his cheek and leaving him left standing with a deep red colour creeping up his neck, before slipping into her room and looking irritated by her own actions at the reflection in the mirror.
Sunday came around the corner and though she photographed Lando, she hadnât talked to him yet.
Their conversation still hung in the the air every time they passed each other in the paddock or he smiled for a picture of hers. Receiving one in return when she looked at the photo appearing on her screen shortly after. She had never done it before, smiling at his face whenever she saw it, but now she couldnât help it. Looking at Oscar photo bombing by accident made the picture just a little sweeter.
âYouâre blushing,â a voice said from behind her. Turning around in a state of shock, she tried to hide the zoomed in on face on her camera from whoever was invading her private space. âItâs because of my face, right?â
âOh, you wish, Norris,â she laughed back awkwardly, trying to slip into the easy banter as naturally as he did. Rolling her eyes half jokingly.
Slowly, bit by bit, they fell into a pattern. A pattern of meeting and kissing and flirting and growing closer. And no matter how hard she tried to convince herself that this was all for fun and that he was nothing she wanted, he seemed to become more perfect with every second she spent with him. He was gentle and kind. Funny, romantic, flirty, nice. A good listener and he watched movies with her no one was willing to watch with her before. He kissed her in the mornings and he held her at night. He took her out on dates and he made sure that everything was perfect for her. In his mind, a dream girl deserved a dream life. And he was willing to provide it for her no matter the cost.
She didnât need much, but all his gentle gestures and romantic words. It was too much of all she learned to mistrust. He was a playboy, why wasnât he acting like one? Why was he acting like this could actually be something?
She still posted more pictures of Oscar than him, even after they started seeing each other regularly. It had kept him occupied now for a while, the thought that maybe the woman he loved didnât like him as much as she made pretend. Maybe, he wasnât the one.
The tension in his apartment had never been this high. With her hunched over her computer, editing new shots from the weekend, which she didnât get finished on the plane or before he left for his quick morning run she would never participate in, he could see Oscarâs smiling face look back. Trophy in his hand and victory in his eyes. He saw her smiling faintly every time she looked from the regulations of the warmth or colour to his face.
He definitely wasnât the only one.
âYou like him more than me, right?â
âWhat? Who?â She looked up at him. Confused and scared. Caught. He could see it in her eyes. How she prayed he didnât ask her about the cards which were already laid out on the table, facing him. She prayed for him to see different cards, the wrong ones, but she knew that only one pair existed.
âOscar. You like him,â he stated. âHe has a girlfriend, you know that, right?â
âOf course, I do.â How could she forget?
âWhy still sob after him then?â he asked, genuinely curious. He wasnât as mad at her as she thought he would be. All that he felt was disappointment. In her. In him. In them.
Why still sob after him?
âHeâs perfect,â she finally answered. She knew, being this honest would be a possible mistake. But what did she had to lose? Nobody else would know. As much of an asshole Lando could be, he would never betray someone like that, she knew that much. And they barely ever talked, so it wouldnât be too awkward (she hoped). âHeâs a good guy, with no problematic past. Heâs nice and he knows how to be nice, which is even better. I mean, who wouldnât want the nice guy?â
âYou donât care who it would be as long as they were a nice guy?â Lando asked, looking down at his cup.
âI will never get the nice guy,â she said back.
âInstead you took me? The guy willing to date you? You donât even care about how I feel, do you? All that is important to you is not being alone, you donât even care how it makes the others around you feel. God, youâre really an awful person, you know that? So self-centred and completely unaware about anyone else.â
âYou arenât really one to talk, Norris. In fact, you should be the one person to understand. Sleeping with random girls to fill in the void of your unbearable loneliness isnât much better. At least I tried having something that could last.â
âI tried too, with you. I tried having something meaningful because I actually liked you and yes, I slept with many girls in the past, but at least I never lied to them. They always knew where they were at, they knew it was never meant for something more. I wanted something more with you.â
âYeah, right.â She laughed dryly, rolling her eyes at his manners. He couldnât be serious. Why would he want something more with her?
âWhy canât you believe me?â He seemed like he wanted to say more in his defence but she cut him off. Scoffing.
âBecause, maybe, you are one of the most entitled people I have ever met. You see nothing more in life than adrenaline, in whichever way itâs closest. And when you want something, you get it. You are everything I never wanted in a man.â
âWhat?â His voice got quiet and suddenly time stopped. He was stuck there now. He was everything sheâd never want, but she was everything he desired. She was everything he loved.
âYou are arrogant and snobby and put your opinion above anyone elseâs. Every time we went out for dinner with the team it was always you who was missing, out in a club or simply at home, probably with some girl too. You donât care about the team.â Lando started walking around the living room, picking up stuff that was aimlessly laying around. âAnd when Oscar won, you werenât even happy for him. I know they fucked up the strategy, I know that you were angry and I understand why. But god, he even felt sorry about winning. He was in pain the whole time - and I know you didnât know - but maybe stop assuming you know everything about oneâs life, because you donât. You couldâve at least looked happy for him.â
âYes, I was angry at the team. Yes, I may have been even a bit angry at Osc in that moment. Yes, I didnât look happy then, because I fucking wasnât. But after the race, I talked to him and we are great teammates. We talked it all out, I apologized and then I congratulated him.â He put the stuff into her arms, standing in front of her again. âSo, maybe you should stop assuming you know anything about what isnât happening in front of your eyes. Because you donât.â She looked down at the stuff. It were a few books, a laptop, a shirt that was discarded on the floor the nigh before - all hers. He also brought a suitcase from the bedroom - hers.
âLeave,â Lando said, turning towards the big window, away from her. âPlease.â
4 weeks. It had been 4 weeks already and the heavy feeling weighting down their hearts still felt the same. It felt like they could feel the otherâs pain too, but both too prideful to admit that things couldâve ended differently. They shouldâve ended differently. Nothing was making sense anymore. All of her pictures looked empty now without his face and huge smile covering half of the photo. All of his passions for racing felt dull now without the exciting ping of his phone whenever she posted a new photo dumb, the excitement of looking if there were any pictures of him in them was gone.
Both blamed it on themselves, but neither got over themselves to knock on the others door and apologize or talk it out.
Y/n knew she fucked up. She knew she deserved the reaction she received and she couldnât blame him for it, having reacted the same when faced with that kind of situation. Though, for someone like Lando, who had to constantly live with the fear and possibility of being used by those people close to him, actually discovering such thing had to be much worse. He only selected a few people he trusted to be this close to him and she fucked it up. She fucked it up the moment she felt the same way he did, finally. The closeness and awareness she always craved to feel for and with someone was finally in the palm of her hands, until she threw it away.
Lando - though he was still disappointed - thought that maybe he couldâve waited with throwing her out of his flat after calming down and collecting his thoughts, though by the time that happened she was already gone, as was every trace of her. Almost every trace, he reminded himself as he looked at the small camera still laying on his bedside table. He hadnât looked at the SD-card yet, neither did he tell her she forgot it when she left. He forgot to give it to her. But giving it back felt too real.
His eyes flickered from the TV to the camera every few seconds, the plot and characters only being a background story to his misery, a way of pretending to be alright. Although he would never say it out loud, he missed her. Every part of her, he missed it. And oh, how he hated that he did. Missing someone so cruel was the most devastating thing to happen. Missing the one who hurt you was never a good path to follow, but he did. It looked nicer than the shallow, lonesome one he took all these months before her.
From one moment to the next, the camera was in his hands and the SD-card was out of it, connected with his computer. Lando hesitated for a second before clicking on the folder titled with the camera model. It was the same one she took with her when they walked through Barcelona and the pictures on there were mostly, him. She still hated him then, so why did she take so many pictures of his body and face and shadow. There were hundreds of him, on the streets of Barcelona and after the race. Just him. No Oscar, no engineers or random people. The only person clearly visible was him.
Maybe there was more than she ever said.
God, he couldnât do this now.
The Dutch Grand Prix was nearing. Practice 1 was good, though it could always be second. Racing on the track where his WDC rival won every consecutive race for the last 3 years, he couldnât help but feel challenged by him every session he climbed into the car that weekend. If he wanted to stand a chance against Max, he needed to win this.
âPeople would just get more reasons to hate on me if I fuck this up,â Lando continued talking, oblivious to the stare of his best friend until he didnât receive an answer. Looking up from his water bottle and stop picking on the straw attached to it, he tried catching Maxâ gaze, though the Brit wasnât focused on him or the ramble of words coming from his mouth, he was focused on something else. Someone else.
âI know you said, that she looked good, but man I doubt my knowledge of your taste now,â he answered without giving any context clues. Lando, slow as ever off track, was wildly looking around the area his best friend was looking at. Not finding what he he meant - or rather who he meant - until Oscar stepped aside for a moment.
There she stood, her face shallow, a forced smile on her lips (though it still looked scarily natural) and no life surrounding her once bright eyes. It all seemed empty now. The way she talked without any enthusiasm lingering in her words or the air around her, the way she shook hands so lazy and unmotivated, the way she stood more hunched over than normally, greeting Lily. Oscarâs girlfriend.
A few months - hell, even a few weeks earlier she wouldâve lost her mind when the words left Oscarâs mouth after he called for her. âI wanted you to meet my girlfriend, Lily. Lily, thatâs Y/n, the photographer you like.â
âHi,â the young woman smiled brightly, extending her hand with excitement and looking genuinely happy to meet her. âI really love all the pictures you take, whether it be of Oscar, Lando or just the paddock. You really capture everything perfectly and naturally.â
âThank you,â she said back, not being able to look past the fact that Lily was simply perfect. Not just from the way she talked or looked or was, she was simply perfect for Oscar. The boy looking at her like Y/n had never seen anyone look at someone. His eyes filled with love and passion for her. âOscar, told me you were studying to become an engineer, thatâs so cool. Like, we really need more woman around here, these blokes are just annoying.â
All three of them laughed and though - she hated to say it - it didnât feel weird. Everything felt natural and nothing hurt. There was no jealousy or conflict building up inside of her, those people were simply great to be around. Especially together. Lily made Oscar talk more, urging him to answer questions or bringing up new conversation topics whenever the talk started to quieten down.
Though with all these distractions around, she still found him more often than sheâd like to admit. In the garage, out on track, on the leader board, it was always his name, his face, his car that she seemed drawn to.
Meeting her eyes, Lando quickly turned around again, hitting Maxâ leg under the table when he didnât avert his eyes from her, but instead waved and smiled.
âWhat are you doing, mate?â Lando asked, slumping deeper and deeper in his seat as he felt her eyes still on the back of his head.
âWhat? Iâm just being nice,â Max answered back, a smug grin on his face.
âStop being nice to her. Start being nice to me.â
The drivers started getting ready for the qualifying, sitting in the car and waiting for the go. All eyes were glued to any sort of screen there was, whether it be strategy, the cars or simply the screen broadcasting the session.
Y/n and Lily were both stood against a wall in the McLaren garage, waiting for the cars to get out of the box and onto the track. The silence didnât feel threatening, not after their conversation earlier, but it was still a bit awkward. Both girls were unsure of what to say.
âWhat happened between you and Lando?â Lily suddenly asked, breaking the silence and Y/nâs stare at the screen and that one car.
She noticed it, of course she did.
âNothing,â Y/n quickly replied, a tad too quickly she noticed as Lily looked at her with unconvinced eyes.
âIf nothing happened, then why are you so awkward around each other and stare at the other all the time?â
âWe do not do that.â
âYes, you do.â
Y/n took a deep breath; how was she gonna get this over with? She wouldnât tell the Oscar part, obviously. But what other part wouldnât be necessary and could milder the catastrophe they found themselves in again?
âLando and I, we never understood each other much,â she started to explain, looking at Lily to see the focused look in her eyes as she listened to every word the girl had to say to give advice in the end. She knew it was needed. âBut then, we went on a walk together, both taking pictures and something just clicked, I guess. We found something similar in our very different perspectives of the other. He kind of always seemed to be this fuckboy, dumb idiot that I could never get to like in my head and because of that, I never tried talking to him or anything. But after that walk, we talked more, on the phone and overall. I guess, we started dating sometime then as well. It was only like a month, but we grew really close until I completely fucked it up. We had a fight where he asked me if I even actually liked him and truth been told, I definitely only saw it as a bit of fun at the beginning, but then I started really liking him, but because of a past relation ship - that wasnât the best example of healthy by far - I had a really hard time accepting that.â Sensing that she was already talking for far too long, she decided to keep the ending short. âI basically told him, that he embodied everything I never wanted in a man and then he threw me out of his flat, rightfully so.â
Lily was silent for a second longer, processing all the new information before she started to say something. âI think you should talk with him about it. From what youâve told me, you really like him and pushing that feeling away is only gonna make it worse. Youâre working with him, you canât avoid it forever. And even when he doesnât forgive you, it would still feel better to have it talked out for both of you.â
âThanks, Lily,â Y/n answered, smiling gratefully at the girl next to her. She was truly a pure angel. âI just donât think he wants to talk with me at the moment.â
âAll you can do is try.â
He was back in again, looking at the data and thinking about how to get the fastest lap and pole. From Q1 into Q2.
And then it happened.
The garage came alive once more, when his name stood on top of all at the end of Q3. Lando Norris got the pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix, and he couldnât fuck this up. He just couldnât. All while she was watching from the sidelines once more with a small mile covering her face. Usually she would go out and take pictures for social media, but she wasnât needed today. She was just another part of the crowd now.
Their hotel rooms were near once more, like they always were. She could hear the quiet music coming from his room as she sat on the balcony in a hoodie and sweats, watching the sun go down, seizing the moment where the clouds were gone from the sky, allowing it to be looked at by her. And him.
Lando watched her sit in peace from his balcony doorway. He wanted to go out, watch it with her, but then he had to face her and he wasnât too keen on that. Not after the conversation he had with Max and how he overheard Y/n and Lily talking about the situation and her wanting to apologize. He needed to concentrate. But all his eyes were able to find was her.
Retreating back to his room, Lando put on a pair of his running shoes before exiting the room and building completely, letting his thoughts being swept away by the cold air and fresh breeze that flew through the city at this hour. He wouldnât let her ruin this weekend for him too.
She watched his figure disappear into the night while he ran towards it. Snapping a picture of his back in the process.
Walking down the hall with her face stuck in her phone, Y/n didnât notice the figure doing the same walking towards her. She didnât notice him until he let his phone drop to keep her steady by holding her arms, pulling her towards him in the process.
âUhm, sorry,â she mumbled, bending down to pick up his phone and give it back to him.
âYeah, thanks,â Lando mumbled in return before he started walking away again. Ignoring her completely.
It was now or never.
âLando,â she called after him, making him stop dead in his tracks. Fuck this shit, she thought as she took a step towards him and then another just to not having to yell all her feelings at him once more. Just now itâd be the truth. âIâm really sorry.â
âI wasnât looking where I was going, donât worry,â he brushed it off, facing her. He knew what she meant and she could see it in his eyes that it did. Part of him wanted for her to say it, but the other part knew he would run back to her immediately. That latter part knew it wouldnât be wise to keep on listening to her.
âIâm sorry about what I said to you before Spa. I didnât mean it, I truly didnât.â She took a deep breath, collecting herself and trying to keep back the tears threatening to spill her every emotion. âI know I was a dick and Iâm sorry about that, I know Iâve hurt you and I never wanted to do that.â He scoffed at her answer. âYou were never what I wanted in a partner, but youâre everything I need. Youâre really funny and charming and nice. Iâm sorry that I took so long to notice all that when you were standing right in front of me all the time.â
She didnât look up at him once while she was talking, her eyes were angled at the ceiling and when she walked past him, she did it in shame. Eyes on the ground and head low. She didnât look at him, too afraid of his disgusted face she would receive probably.
But all Lando did, was standing there, in the middle of the hall, with his mouth agape like he wanted to say something in return though he was speechless. No words left his mouth until the elevator doors closed and made a ping sound he hasnât heard in a long time.
âIâm sorry too.â
The garage was filled with anticipation, he could do this. He could win it.
She was ready for it, for the chaos that would break out and for the run needed to make when he actually crossed the chequered flag first and won. If he didnât crash into a wall, he could do it. He could have a chance at being a world champion.
The chaos that broke out was worse than she expected, but she was there in Miami, so she had been through worse. The moment he was around the last corner, she started moving with the crowd, choosing another way than most of the engineers and team members to celebrate. She was still having to do her job. Photograph him. The moment Lando got out of the car, everyone seemed to explode in cheers and hollows. 20 seconds. Lando had a lead of 20 seconds.
Fucking amazing, Y/n thought, taking one snapshot after the other. Trying to hit all the angles she learned looked good on him over the last year. Or as in his words, simply lovely.
Lando jumped into the crowd, not as aggressively as in Miami, but the crowd felt the same nonetheless. Wild, ecstatic, prideful. He was so happy that, when he looked at her, he smiled, one finger next to his face and smiling at her. Not at the camera, at her. Y/n stood close enough to see the look in his eyes, he was forgiving her. After all sheâd done to him, he was forgiving her and smiling while doing so.
And then he walked away, towards the cool down room, leaving her eyes to flicker down at the screen like sheâd done so many times before. This was it. This was what she was hoping to receive, but better. She hoped for a pad on the back and a small smile, but when he looked at her, for a moment, it felt like nothing between them changed. It was still them, being reckless and in love.
The whole team gathered in front of the garage, celebrating the win like theyâd always do. A big smile on Landoâs face as he sat in front of the sign with his P1 written on it, the trophies for him and constructor in front of them. The whole team was cheering and the moment the click on the camera went off, the champagne was popped.
It was more an instinct than part of a plan, though the moment Lando started to run away from the sticky liquid, running into her direction to shield her from the champagne. Hugging her waist and bending the part of his upper body what wasnât already protecting her over her head to protect her hair. He felt her giggles against his chest. The champagne against his back got less and when it did near nothing, he took her hand in his and started running off from the crowd and into the back of the garage.
Letting his back fall against one of the walls, he pulled her in by her waist once more. Pressing their bodies together so they were breathing as one. Their chest heaving up and down from the adrenaline at the same time, both too excited still to process what they were even doing. The people outside were still heard cheering but to them that meant nothing. Especially not when one adventure swept right into the next one.
His lips crashing on hers like they were a lifetime separated. Like nothing theyâd done before felt quiet like this and it didnât. This was more. This was everything.
âIâm sorry for how I reacted and Iâm sorry that I didnât say anything yesterday,â he panted against her lips. âBut I swore to myself that when I won today Iâm gonna listen to the immature part of me and try to make you mine for real this time.â
âI just wanna be yours.â

Collars of Duty 1
Hybrid!Simon x reader - Chapter 2 -
When a new problem hybrid is brought to the rehab center, you're called in from medical leave. Having been through hell he's classed as dangerous but you believe he deserves a chance. Hopefully you both can heal each other without adding to old wounds.
I dedicate this story to @kiwiimochi because they said they'd be interested in a story like this. I hope you enjoy and you're welcome to tell me what you think.
Content: hybrid AU, brief description of wounds, allusions to torture
The call comes through in the middle of the night, ripping you from deep slumber that for once was peaceful.
You wake with a gasp, heart immediately racing to outrun the invisible danger. It takes you a few seconds to blink the last remnants of sleep from your eyes. Youâre at home, in your bed. There is no danger around, except the phone that rings impatiently in your bedside drawer.
You recognize the ringtone. Itâs your work phone, which hasnât rung in weeks even though you always keep it on and charged. Itâs slightly unsettling to hear it ring at such an ungodly hour. Itâs freeing too, to realize that your heart slowly calms down and you do not spiral into a panic attack.
Yawning your reach into the drawer and open it, getting the angrily vibrating phone and hold it up to your ear.
âHello?â
âWe need you here.â
Youâre stunned into silence. Everyone knows youâre on medical leave. They should know better than to call you in randomly during the night. They -
âLike right now.â You recognize Elizabethâs voice and your heartrate skyrockets again.
âLiz, you know that Iâm on leave. You know wh-â
âThey want to put him down.â Her voice interrupts you, full of urgency.
That has you sitting bolt upright. Putting down hybrids has been illegal for years now and the center mostly adheres to those laws. Mostly, not always and when they donât they usually have a damn good reason not to.
Working at a government managed rehabilitation center for hybrids meant that sometimes they put their decisions above the law.
Youâre already out the bed and stumbling around the room while trying to get dressed one handed.
âIâm coming. Anything I should know?â
You tuck the phone between your shoulder and your ear so you can use both hands to pull on your pants. The short pause strains your nerves. She wouldnât have called you if the others could handle whatever was happening.
âLiz?â You prompt her.
âBelgian Malinois hybrid. Military. They found him after he was MIA for moths. Severely malnourished, signs of torture all over him. No idea how they managed to get him into a chopper and bring him here, but he is here.â She rattles down and if you didnât know her better youâd think that she doesnât care. But you do know her better. Staying professional helps her not to break down with cases like this.
Hectically you tuck a shirt over your head, gather your things and basically run out the door. When you started working at the center you moved as close as possible to your new workplace and because you were lucky that meant living just down the street.
Running along the sidewalk you urge her on. âWhat more, Liz. I need everything you can give me.â
The silence speaks volumes. She hesitates, then goes on.
âHe attacked and killed one of the soldiers that brought him here. They sedated him but said if no one wants to work with him, they have to put him down. Iâve seen hybrids go animal before but not like this.â
You grit your teeth at that. You hated the term âgoing animalâ even if it was a widely accepted term when working with hybrids. Just because they weâre genetically part animal didnât mean, that them going berserk was less human that an ordinary person losing it.
And if what she told you was true, he had more than enough reason to lose his marbles.
Before you can ask another question you reach the fence of the rehab compound and to your surprise Liz is there, already opening the door for you so you wonât have to use your access card. You end the call and pocket your phone when you approach her.
âI want to say itâs good to have you back but the circumstances make the whole thing slightly less cheery.â She greets you and then engulfs you in a heartfelt hug.
Damn, you missed her. Liz didnât work with the hybrids as a handler. She was part of the office team but she was one of your favorite coworkers here. Liz got shit done while taking none and still she was the nicest, sweetest person around.
You nod, returning her hug. Then you breathe deeply, preparing yourself to actually step foot into the facility again. The very reason why you were on medical leave in the first place. It doesnât feel as bad as you feared but youâre not sure how you will react to the hybrid.
âWhere is he? Whatâs his name?â
Liz sighs deeply. âHeâs in the cell. The others refused to work with him when they heard the details from the soldiers. Honestly, I donât blame them but I thought it was worth calling you.â
You nod grimly and let her lead the way. The facility worked with aggressive hybrids a lot. Problematic cases were nothing new. But one who had murdered mere hours ago was new territory. Youâre not sure this is the best decision.
Was this the kind of case you were ready to come back for? After what happened? This had the potential to ruin any progress you had made during your leave.
No. You couldnât let him be put down just because you were scared. He deserved a chance and if all the others were too worried then youâd give him the chance. Even if it might cost you the stability youâd gained back.
Liz comes to a halt before the cell and turns to you. Her hands clasp onto your shoulders, looking at you through her glasses.
âThank you for trying.â She hesitates briefly. âDonât destroy yourself over it though. If heâs lost, heâs lost. You canât save everyone.â
Her words make your throat tighten and swallowing seems like an impossible feat. You nod, despite the unease bubbling up in you.
Heâs a person, you remind yourself. Itâs not like youâre meeting a wild animal.
Finally you turn to look through the small window into the cell. The large hybrid nearly steals your breath. Heâs still unconscious, lying on the mattress at the far end of the otherwise unfurnished cold cell. The dark pointed ears that peek out of his shaggy hair twitch every now and then.
âHis name?â You ask again, your voice a whisper, even though youâre not entirely sure why you feel the need to quiet down.
He is dirty beyond belief; his hair unkempt and you can make out a slight beard on his strong jaw through the bars of his muzzle. Â You grind your teeth at the sight of it. Using muzzles of that type on hybrids has also been forbidden and you wonder if they found him like this or put it on him.
The fact that he doesnât wear a shirt, only ripped and sullied pants, grants you an unobstructed view of his torso. There are various wounds in different phases of healing and his ribs are overly visible beneath his skin.
The twin wounds on his left draw your eyes. They seem almost circular and are located between his ribs. Already crusted over messily they seem to not be the newest ones; still you shudder with how painful they look. Over the ribs that lay between those wounds the skin is blackish blue and bruised.
You decide to not look closely at his other wounds as to not make you feel shakier than you already do. Instead you look at his face again. That too is covered in shallow cuts but those do not make your insides want to turn over.
His hair seems to be a deep, dark brown, matching the ears and you wonder how heâll look, once heâs clean and not on the brink of starvation. Lizâ voice interrupts your thoughts.
âSimon Riley. Lieutenant.â
You both know rank means almost nothing when it comes to hybrids but you donât comment on the information. Youâre about to ask something else when he starts stirring and you hold your breath. Even though youâre outside you feel the tension rise along with his consciousness from the artificial sleep.
Two figures, that were obstructed from view before because they stood so close to the wall, step forward. Soldiers, you realize and they have their weapons trained on the slowly waking hybrid. On Simon.
As soon as heâs halfway conscious he scrambles to his feet, slightly swaying in his spot. He tries to bring his arms to the front but they seem to be tied behind his back. His tail grows stiff behind him, the ears tilt back and his upper lip curls into a snarl revealing his canines while his eyes fixate on the soldiers.
You can hear his deep resounding growl through the door and everything in you wants to run. This is a military hybrid, all right. Everything about him is big and intimidating, the aggression rolling off of him in waves along with the resounding growl.
Instead of running you set your shoulders and breathe deeply. âLet me inside and get the soldiers out.â You say a lot more confidently than you feel. Evidently their way of handling him is not working.
Liz raises her eyebrows but communicates with the guards inside. Slowly they back towards the door, keeping their guns pointed at the hybrid while Liz unlocks the door. Quicker than you can comprehend you changed positions with one of the guards, the other staying with his gun still pointing at Simon.
ââOut.â You command. You wish your body was as unwavering as your voice but you can feel a subtle shaking start in your legs.
The soldier seems conflicted but Elizabeth keeps the door open and he backs out too. Everyone at the center knows that working with hybrids comes with a lot of risks. If this goes south all youâll be is a small stack of papers on Lizâ desk, waiting to be signed. And maybe a body to be buried.
Youâre alone with him now, the heavy door closing behind you and the hostility rolling off Simon nearly suffocates you. His eyes are now fixed solely on you and he seems to be weighing his options, every muscle in his body coiled tight, ready to attack you.
You pray that he doesnât.
You study him for a moment longer and you see the sheen on sweat that appears on his skin. This is not only aggression. Heâs scared. Scared of you and somehow the fear being mutual calms you down. This hybrid must have been through hell and now he woke in a strange room after forcefully being sedated. Youâd be scared shitless too and growl at people.
âHello.â
You hold the eye contact and the way his ears perk forward for a second before going back again would be adorable in any other situation. The growl stutters before returning stronger than before. He reacted to being spoken to. Lizâ had exaggerated, maybe theyâd misinterpreted him, because this hybrid was not on a murder spree.
Yet heâd killed earlier, you have to remind yourself. Just because you were a softie didnât mean heâd spare you.
Slowly you raise your hands. âIâm just going to sit down, here. Do you know where you are?â
You can see the confusion on his face at the fact you talk to him and you mentally curse the soldiers that brought him in. Despite his display being more animalistic than human he is still a person before all else. How come they hadn't had the common sense to talk to him?
His keen eyes donât miss even one of your movements as you settle down and cross your legs.
âYou were found just north of the border in Texas.â Itâs difficult to keep your voice as soft as possible with the way your throat is so tight. For a second you hate yourself because youâre thankful that he is muzzled and his arms are restrained.
Then you remind yourself that he is not Phillip and despite what Liz told you, you will judge him based on his behavior not on the stories. Like you should have with Phillip.
Something about what you said makes his ears perk up. Heâs still careful but the previous stifling aggression is gone. Once again you try to suppress your anger at the soldiers not talking to him. This isnât nearly as bad as they made it out to be.
âThey brought you to a rehabilitation facility for hybrids that work with the authorities or the military. You might have heard of it before. Itâs called âRehybridâ which is a stupid name if you ask me but I wasnât born when they decided on that soâŠâ
Now he cocks his head at you and you try to keep from smiling. You know youâre rambling but it seems to help so you keep going.
âNot everyone is gifted in name giving.â Without much of a pause and consciously casually you continue on. âMind if I take the handcuffs off of you?â
That makes him stiffen, reflexively his lip curls up again a small growl starting up. Of course he doesnât trust you. But youâre also very aware of how unfair it is to have him shackled and muzzled when he feels threatened already.
âI know. I wouldnât want anyone near me too if I were in your position but I think it would only be fair.â Youâre very aware of the fact, that Liz, and the soldiers probably too, are watching through the window, most definitely thinking youâve lost your mind.
Simon shakes his head and even if it is disappointing it makes you feel incredible that he interacted with what you said. Your chest expands and you suddenly feel like a big boulder lifted off your shoulders. Thatâs a good start.
âItâs okay, I wonât do it then. Just give me a sign when youâre ready.â
Once again you briefly glance at the state his body is in and you slightly wince. Yeah, maybe you would have to press a little harder.
âListen. I really want to give you the time and space but I think your wounds and your body are on slightly tighter schedule than I am. I wonât force you but I donât want you dying on me.â
His eyes widen at that and in that moment youâd pay to know what heâs thinking. Itâs interesting to watch him as he seems to mentally take note of his body. He nods at you and you breathe a sigh of relief.
âTake the cuffs off?â, you ask again just to be sure. Simon nods again.
Keeping it slow and easily predictable you stand up again and raise your hand to the latch in the door, opening it and sticking your hand through it. If Liz and the soldiers listened, theyâll give you the key, hopefully.
For a few agonizingly long heartbeats nothing happens, then a key is dropped into the palm of your hand and you close the latch again.
âIâm going to take a step towards you and then you can come to me. Sound good?â
Simon nods again and you take the step. His body tenses but then he crosses the small space and turns his back to you. His chest is heaving and his back is damp with cold sweat. Itâs almost unnerving the way he has his head tilted as far to the side as possible, watching you out of the corner of his wide eye. If you make one wrong move he could still easily put you on the ground.
This close you can smell him and the stench coming off of him almost makes you gag. You try to breathe through your mouth at the smell of something rotten assaulting your nose. There's also the underlying smell of piss and filth along with other scents you can't identify. You concentrate on the task at hand in order not to imagine what might have happened to him.
Trying not to stress him out more, you talk him through the short process of taking off the handcuffs. His fast breathing makes you slightly worried that heâll hyperventilate.
The moments the cuffs are on the floor heâs on the other side of the room again and his hands are tearing at the muzzle on his head. His fingers are frantic and a nail on his already damaged hands breaks, a little bit of blood welling up.
âWait, please!â You call out desperately but his movements only grow more hectic. The muzzle he has on is designed so the hybrid is unable to take it off without seriously injuring themselves. His nimble fingers flit all over the piece, grabbing and tugging until he decides to just start pushing it upwards off his face.
Immediately the metal cuts into his cheeks and you know heâll do it anyway. He doesnât care about cutting his skin in the process. Panic swells in your chest at the thought of him shredding his face just to be muzzle free.
âPlease, Simon, Stop!â You say desperately in a last attempt before he pulls it off his face. Against everything you expected he freezes, eyes going wide.
âSimon, thatâs your name, right?â, you question your hands outstretched as if you could keep him from hurting himself further by sheer force of will.
Youâre shaking and you know he can see it. Swallowing is almost painful. âPlease donât hurt yourself, Iâll take it off of you but please stop hurting yourself.â
His eyes narrow but this time he hesitates less before nodding and stepping towards you. God he is big. Youâre all too aware of how incredibly vulnerable you are right now. He could probably rip you apart with his bare hands if he wanted to.
Heâs a fully trained soldier and you⊠youâre just an ordinary person who helps hybrids to get back on their feet. You specifically chose this line of work because youâre soft and stupidly selfless. Using those traits for work seemed like a good option to turn them into strengths.
Now youâre all too aware of how little your softness would guard you against Simonâs brute strength. Even on the brink of starvation the fact that heâs a weapon remains.
Achingly slow your hands reach up to the muzzle, feeling along it for the mechanism to unlock. His eyes stare into yours and this close you can see that theyâre the color of dark honey. Nothing about the expression in them is sweet though and you have to consciously swallow against the lump forming in your throat.
You unlock the mechanism and Simon stays in your personal space for a second longer. You donât break the eye contact and slowly he moves backwards until there is enough room to breathe between you two again.
He flexes his jaw for a moment to test it and this time you smile. His eyes narrow at that but you donât let it deter you.
Until now he hasnât made a move to hurt you and you decide to introduce yourself. When you tell him your name he still doesnât answer but heâs attentive and you think that maybe it will be fine after all.
