"Uh, kinda busy." Lip hummed, brows creasing lightly when he looked over at you.

"With your professor?" You gave him a pointed look, a devious smile spreading across your lips when he scoffed.

"Yeah. You got plans with yours?" Lip countered.

You rolled your eyes. "Please. I'm not that desperate for a grade." You quipped. "Speaking of, I was going to ask if you were free tonight, because I am going to fail this math test on Wednesday."

"Yeah? And what do you need me for?" Lip grinned, pushing the door open for you. It was so casual, friendly- it made your heart flutter.

"Stop." You shook your head at him. "C'mon, I really need your help. I do your critical theory homework all the time to impress your sexy professor lady, so you owe me."

"Yeah, I guess. I'll, uh, I'll stop by after my last. I gotta check with Youens, make sure I got my shit done. Then I can come help you study." Lip nodded casually.

"Ugh, thank you." You sighed, bumping him playfully with your shoulder. "I swear, I'm not teaching math ever. I don't understand why I'm in the hardest math class for elementary ed."

"I mean, they probably want their teachers to be halfway smart." Lip shrugged. "Well, maybe not at the shit hole school I went to, but, uh, the good schools."

You snorted. "Yeah? Well, regardless, I'm not teaching math. I'll hold down the language arts, or the history, maybe the science if I have to. But math? Out of the question."

"Not even long division, huh?" Lip grinned.

"To be completely honest with you, I don't think I know how to do long division." You giggled. "I can barely do short division."

Many Years Later

"Lip!" You called, your voice carrying out to the garage, where your husband was "working on the car" (which really meant sneaking a cigarette).

"Yeah?" Lip hummed, walking into the house. Freddie sat at the kitchen table, a tiny frown on his features that mimicked yours perfectly. It made Lip's heart melt.

"Let Daddy see the problem, baby. He's better at math than me." You ran a hand over Freddie's curls sweetly, moving so Lip could take your spot.

Freddie had gotten Lip's freakish ability to do math. He was only six, but doing multiplication and long division already in his advanced groups.

"Lemme see, bud." Lip turned the paper towards him, scanning the problem. "Ah, ok, so you're not carrying the number here." Lip pointed to the problem, explaining it to your tiny son.

Your heart swelled, picking Jude up and hoisting him on your hip, trying to finish loading the dishwasher.

"Always thought your were jokin'." Lip hummed, gently squeezing your ass so you blushed, leaning to kiss the toddler on his head.

"About what?" You raised a brow.

"The long division thing." Lip laughed lightly. You gave him a confused look. "Y'know, when you said you wouldn't teach math and all that."

"Oh," You rolled your eyes playfully. "No, I wasn't. Why do you think I teach language arts now? Can't do all that numbers stuff like you."

Lip smirked, taking the dish from you and putting it in the rack. "How do you even remember that?" You cock your head to the side.

"What?"

"That I said that." You giggle. "That was, like, a million years ago."

"Because," Lip shrugged. "I was in love with you."

"No, you weren't." You blushed, dodging Jude's grabbing hands towards your hair. "You had your Mrs. Robinson."

Lip rolled his eyes. "Yeah, but, you were like my best friend." He said boyishly. Your heart melted. "Still are, but then, I just... I didn't want to fuck it up, ya know?"

"Watch it." You glared at him lightly, though it wasn't very convincing. "That's sweet. I was, like, very much so in love with you too, for the record."

"Yeah?" Lip grinned. You nodded, laughing when he kissed you sweetly over Jude's head. "Kinda had an idea."

"Really? What gave it away? The wedding or the kids?" You said sarcastically.

"No, it was the night that I had to pick you up from that dive bar downtown, and, uh, you were so drunk-"

"-Alright, Gallagher-"

"-And you kept telling me how much you loved me-"

You glared at him. "Jude, Daddy is being mean to me. Can you believe that?" You cooed, frowning exaggeratedly at your son. Jude just babbled, trying to grab at your hair again.

Self-conscious, Geten hurriedly makes a wall of ice facing Hawks so he can gobble down food without being watched. A childhood memory comes back to Hawks while he observes Geten.

"You always eat it like that," someone says while Child Hawks sits in a corner bolting down food.

Hawks: Are you okay? It's safe here.

No one will take it from you.

Hawks: (Repeating what the parental figure told him in a flashback)

There is no one to threaten you so it's okay. (What am I doing?)

Geten: (in between bites gobbling food) But I'm nervous. If I hesitate, he'll come. I don't want to see you.

Both men start gobbling down food and someone says, 'hurry up'. Dabi approaches in the background like............?

THEORY: Deeeltaaruuuneeee

You know, despite all the intense speculation about Deltarune - its dialogue, its music, its merchandise... - there's one obvious piece of foreshadowing that no one seems to think about. A critical piece. One that's been under our nose the whole time.

The title.

Today we're going to deep dive into the title drop of Deltarune, its connections to Undertale and Deltarune, and speculate about what it could be foreshadowing in the future.

VISUALS

Deltarune's title appears with a notable wavering, almost interlacing effect. We've seen this effect before.

Asriel causes this when using HYPER GONER.

And though the Memoryheads have more scan lines and desync than the Deltarune title, it's still an incredibly similar visual that stands out in the game.

A similar wavering sort of effect also appears during Undyne the Undying's deformation and reformation.

I wonder if this effect might represent holding on through determination.

At her true death, Undyne the Undying begins to visibly melt, which we're told by Alphys is what's supposed to happen to monsters who contain high amounts of determination. So, it would follow that when she's wavering as she's clinging to life through determination, that's also an intended visual.

And if that's true of Undyne, it could be true of the Memoryheads, who have the same kind of effect. It would make sense, as they are amalgamates, whose very premise is based on the presence of determination.

So, the logo fading in with a wavering interlacing effect might mean that it represents something - or someone - returning to life through determination.

Of course, that's just my best guess. Maybe it represents something completely different - or nothing at all. But both the Memoryheads and Undyne the Undying hold a lot of apparent Deltarune references, and I wouldn't be surprised if their wavering effects were one of them, tying them into the same phenomenon that's happening to the logo.

There's something interesting happening during the logo's disappearance. Keep your eye on the SOUL at the center to observe it more easily.

The logo is not just fading out - its parts seem to be undergoing some kind of mathematical transformation, causing them to multiply, and fade out as they do so.

If any math fans know what specific formula or transformation is being used here, that would be great to know, but as far as I can figure, whatever is happening to the parts are being reflected across multiple axes.

This concept of reflection as division appears several times in Deltarune. I've delved into it here.

Basically, we have this recurring idea that in order to multiply something, you have to divide it in half. Once divided, both halves are no longer the same as the original, resembling it though they may. You could say they're both "reflections" of the original.

That seems reminiscent of what's happening here.

The SOUL, and all the other parts of the logo, appear to be divided again and again, gradually fading with each division until there's nothing left of them.

This may have concerning implications for the plot.

I'm not sure what, exactly, this whole reflection-division concept is building up to, but it's definitely setting up something. And watching this soul and the rest of the title being reflected and divided so many times that it fades out of existence... well, you can't help but worry. There's a lot of wild conjecture we could launch from here, but I'll leave that to you.

There's one more thing here worth noticing. Deltarune is a parallel story to Undertale. If we compare their logos, they look fairly similar. Both are white text on a black background with a red heart in the center letter. But there are a couple of interesting differences.

First, Undertale's logo is comprised of detailed pixels, while Deltarune's is made of blocky letters.

This gives Deltarune's logo the impression of a game with old-school, scan-line-looking graphics (if someone knows what this is called please lmk lol), while Undertale's logo looks like that of a more modern game by comparison.

Interestingly, this is kind of inverse to the presentations of the games themselves. The pixel count in Deltarune is notably higher than that of Undertale. But here, it's the opposite.

(Side note: It also might be worth noting that as of the Sweepstakes, the Ice Palace also appears to be in this old-school style.)

Second, and most importantly, UNDERTALE is depicted in all caps. The visual logo for DELTARUNE is actually presented in all lowercase: "deltarune."

This is important in a series that has consistently used uppercase and lowercase as some kind of recurring element.

One quick example is when Sans explains the Level of Violence acronym: "you never gained LOVE, but you gained love. does that make sense?"

But it's not all acronyms. There's many other interesting usages throughout the series, such as Asgore's name being alternately presented normally or in all-caps, or the presence of certain titles in the soundtracks being in all-caps for no discernible reason.

We still don't really know what this element is meant to represent. But we do know that whatever it means, it is present between the "deltarune" and "UNDERTALE" logos.

Like with so many things here, we do have to wait on more information to truly understand the meaning. But once we know more about the reflection-division and uppercase-lowercase elements, then the multiplying, differently cased logos should also fall into place.

SOUND

The Deltarune title audio seems comprised of three parts: a sound reminiscent of a collective inhale or gasp, followed by a robotic voice saying "DELTARUNE," followed by a mixture of two types of sounds - one reminiscent of a collective exhale, the other a series of discordant chimes - that gradually fade out.

As many have pointed out, the opening sound in the Deltarune title is just an echoey version of the sound that plays when transitioning up from the Dark World to the Light World in Castle Town: snd_dtrans_lw.

Awesome! We have a confirmed connection for the beginning part of the audio. Surely this will provide some insight?

Well... not really...?

While we know a little bit more about the Light vs Dark World concept than we do about, say, the reflection-division concept, I feel we're still not much closer to understanding the meaning behind this sound effect.

I mean, the information we have here is pretty limited. The sound is used when Kris and Susie rise back up to the Light World, which could tell us that the title audio relates to something (whatever the title is representing here) rising up a level, too. If you want to stretch, taking the allegorical into account, maybe it represents some "fictional" or "escapist" elements becoming more "real." This has kind of been alluded to already, with Susie wanting to bring the Darkners into the Light World because it's just "better" than real life, and Berdly and Noelle agreeing and wanting to create Dark Fountains.

Beyond that...there's not much here, that I can think of. If anything, the usage of this audio in the title drop is more important for telling us the in-game usage is important than the other way around. We kind of have to know what the title represents to be able to know the significance of it "rising up"/transitioning between worlds would be.

There's also the sound effect that plays when Noelle or the others "get stronger," which kind of resembles an altered version of dtrans_lw, and would provide some more context if true... but I can't be certain.

Anyway, let's continue onward.

Next up is the robotic-sounding voice saying "DELTARUNE."

This appears to be a text-to-speech voice. Moreover, the TTS voice appears to be one of the same ones from abc_123_a.ogg.

This is notable because that TTS is also used for Gaster's text noise in "room_gaster" (Entry 17).

In other words, it's very possible that the voice saying "Deltarune" is supposed to be Gaster's.

This isn't really as shocking as it seems. Gaster very much appears to be the framing device around Deltarune as an entire game - he gives it to us as SURVEY_PROGRAM, and communicates to us during Game Overs and save file screens. The title being another part of the game's framing, it wouldn't really be a surprise that he'd be here too.

If we do assume the voice belongs to Gaster, the more interesting questions become why he's able to speak a fully voiced word, and why the voice sounds so...strained. One can almost imagine someone desperately leaving a final message, or barely managing to contact someone, before subsequently fading out. All subjective, but interesting to think about.

The final part might be the most mysterious.

There are two main overlapping kinds of sounds playing here: a collective sigh or moan that gradually fades out, and a variety of discordant notes.

Regarding the sigh, I don't know for sure. The most simple guess would be that, if the inhale-sounding sound represents transitioning upwards from Dark to Light World, then perhaps the exhale-sounding sound represents the inverse - transitioning downwards from Light to Dark World.

The only problem with this assumption is that Kris and Susie do transition downwards from the Light World to the Dark World, and the different sound effects that have played so far don't really sound exhale-y at all. So that part's a mystery.

The other overlapping sound jumps out instantly, though.

An immediate association, to me, is Snowgrave.

Although these notes in the Snowgrave sound effect are much clearer than the distorted ones in the Deltarune title, they both are seemingly random- and discordant-sounding, and the sound itself is reminiscent of chimes.

But there is another instance of this kind of sound.

During the Chapter 1 livestream, many tiny differences were added to the game's build for the purposes of the stream. One such difference was the forest room containing the ballerina-type enemies.

In this room, visuals were added resembling the gray star-like sparkles that also seem present during Snowgrave's animation.

And a feature was added where interacting with the ballerinas would cause them to play a bunch of discordant, glass-like sounds.

Toby Fox was unusually cryptic about this change. He describes the sounds only as "a horrible noise," and when asked what they're saying, replies, "Secret. Never ask a dog that question."

So, it seems likely there's some intended mystery surrounding this difference, and it is unusual to me that the ballerinas' chimes are so similarly chaotic as Snowgrave and the title audio.

Personally, my best guess is that it has something to do with the silvery sparkles. "snd_snowgrave" notably does NOT include the preceding chimes - which play while the sparkles are floating out of Noelle's hands. The livestream ballerina enemy area seems to once again associate these chimes with the presence of sparkles.

If that's the case, then maybe the chimes at the end of the title audio have something to do with the sparkles.

Of course, to those without a music theory background like most of us, sound perception seems pretty subjective. Three sounds that all sound like a bunch of glassy, discordant notes to my ears could actually be completely unrelated.

So take this with a grain of salt. The only truly solid information we have is that the Deltarune logo voice seems to use the same TTS as abc_123 and Gaster. The rest is speculation.

But if these similarities are intentional, and those chiming sounds in the title audio are supposed to represent something to do with Snowgrave, that's obviously not a good sign.

CONCLUSION

While I don't think we have all the puzzle pieces just yet, we do have a variety of clues that give off a strong tone about what's going on. This is my suspicion:

The Deltarune title is depicting a tragedy.

Something bad is happening here.

The strained and desperate voice, the inhaled gasp, the collective sigh as a discordant collection of sounds and reflections fade out into nothingness... it's not looking good.

We know Gaster met with an unfortunate fate, and it's his voice that's speaking to us. We know dividing something causes the original to be forever altered and lost, and the SOUL and everything else that makes up the title seems to be undergoing that until it's reduced to nothingness. We know Undyne reformed herself through determination with a similar visual to the logo's appearance, but like Undyne, the logo ends up fading out anyway.

And let's be honest. We know something bad has happened to Deltarune before.

Gaster wants us to make "a new future" with him. One that shines with hope. ("Unlike the old future" perhaps implied.) He specifically made his appearance known in Undertale to players with low levels of violence.

By contrast, this implies something dark and terrible happened to Deltarune's universe in the past. It's in all the little things. Alphys sets the stage with Mew Mew 2's darker storyline. Kris' birdcage has "seen a lot of crashes," and they certainly act like this isn't their first time being possessed. Sans has seen his share of bad timelines, and in the casino dialogue, talks about back when he was less experienced, when one time he witnessed an especially bad snow. Spamton knows exactly what will happen to Kris on a Weird Route, as if he's already seen it - almost as if he's been frozen for years inside rings and behind mysterious locked doors. Noelle claims she doesn't know what Snowgrave is, but also stares off into the freezer, and can't remember what she's done. There's characters preparing for a particularly bad winter. And then there's the perpetual threat of the Roaring, and Ralsei's haunted expression when he describes it, like he's seen it before. There's the fact that we fall down into an evacuated town within a barren landscape of darkness and eyes. The title screen, after all this, plays a mournful piano song over an image of the three heroes at Worlds' Edge. Before the Story.

So, is it really any surprise?

There's so much writing on the walls about Deltarune having repeating, tragic elements, and the title drop seems no exception.

Will we be the ones to break the cycle, and change Deltarune's future? Or is the fate depicted in the title the only possible outcome?

You were sitting on Taemin's bed, leaning comfortably on the pillow against the wall. There was a math book on your lap because that was the last lesson today. At the end of it, your teacher quickly said how to solve the homework and you decided to do it right after returning from school to get it over with. It was literally 20 minutes of work, but apparently Taemin had other plans by kissing you right now.

His hand continuously for a long moment fondly caressed your cheek, and the other one was somewhere on your waist, squeezing it gently. It would be a lie saying you had any resistance looking at how you wrapped your arms around his neck and responded to his lip movements passionately, occasionally sucking lightly on his tongue. The entire room was filled with the sound of wet lips brushing against each other, but you didn't have to worry because his parents will be home from work in a few hours.

Taemin finally slowly pulled away, allowing you both to take your first normal breath in the last few minutes. Even though it was refreshing, deep in your heart you felt sad that the kiss had just ended. His gaze was affectionate as always, and his fingers brushed your hair over your shoulder. However, you felt in the air something different than usual.

- What? - you asked with slight amusement, seeing Taem hesitating over something. You twirled the pencil in your fingers impatiently, waiting for his answer.

Taemin gazed at you for a long moment, biting his lower lip. Finally, he decided to move closer again, placing several smooches on your neck. 

- You're tickling - you giggled under your breath, pulling back a little. Tae chuckled softly too, leaning on either side of your body.

- Could we… - he glanced at your sweater. - Could we take it off? - he asked, taking a deep breath. 

You smirked, guessing what he meant, but you knew you had a great opportunity to prank him. And it would be a real pity not to use this occasion.

- Sure - you agreed without much resistance, grabbing the ends of your sweater and taking it off. You were wearing a tank top underneath and you could see immediately the huge disappointment in his eyes. He didn't say anything though, just stared at this unnecessary material.

Taemin has seen you wearing a bra a few times, mostly in fitting rooms when you two went shopping together. It wasn't very uncomfortable for you, in fact you were more amused by the thought that he might be the first boy among his friends to see a girl in a bra.

- What is it about again? - you asked playfully, teasing him. - You wanted me to take off my sweater, didn't you?

- Yes… - he looked extremely intimidated. - It's warm in this room, don't you think? - he cleared his throat quietly, looking away. The atmosphere got a little awkward, which was… rather odd. 

- Yeah, actually... I'm even too hot in that tank top - you admitted after a moment, because you enjoyed his embarrassment so much. Taem was always so bold and basically did whatever he wanted, so these types of situations were incredibly precious. This time you painfully slowly reached for the fabric and lifted it up, pulling it over your head. You tossed it aside, smoothing your hair slightly. There wasn't really much to look at. You were wearing a navy blue soft bra, completely plain, nothing special.

Taemin blinked nervously, examining your whole body with his eyes. His hands very gently found its place on your ribs. It felt like a feather. You actually had the impression that he was afraid you were going to tell him to take this hands away at any time.

- I... could I kiss you lower than usual? - the next request left his lips, with a huge uncertainty in his voice. 

This made you giggle uneasily, since Tae was making it so embarrassing. There would be no problem if he just did it, but instead he started to ask about every little thing. On the other hand, you appreciated it as a sign of respect to you. 

- Well… - you glanced down at yourself, thinking briefly if this was something inappropriate. - I think… you can try… - you shrugged your shoulders, giving him permission. 

Taemin cautiously came closer and pecked your collarbone as if to gauge your reaction. You didn't do anything though, sitting politely, which made him give a few more pecks there before switching sides and doing the same. This wasn’t particularly new, but you were more undressed and it made these kisses special.

His next sharp breath was before he slowly lowered his lips to your cleavage, but quite high up. This area also soon was covered in little smooches, to which you can’t help but smile.

- What a beautiful baby you are, really - he admitted, shamelessly staring at your breasts. This made you laugh, as you corrected yourself on the pillow to sit more comfortably. 

- I don't know what you're excited about, you saw me in a bra already - you mocked him, feeling more brave again. 

Taemin just rolled his eyes. - Because you can't enjoy the little things, duh - he answered playfully and brushed your hair behind your ear. - But okay, if you're looking for adrenaline... - he reached for your arm and more boldly slided the strap down. Then Tae got closer and kissed your skin. This peck was different, more like licking.

- Ah, what are you doing? - you whined in amusement, slapping lightly his arm.

- I'm taking it off - he grinned, brushing your hair from the other side and doing the same. You were left with a bra that was still pretty tight on your breasts, but showed a little more. Taemin came back with pecks on your cleavage and you couldn't lie, you were starting to feel something weird in your tummy. It was hard to say what exactly, like a mix of stress but also curiosity. 

- How about giving one kiss to your breasts? They must feel neglected - he giggled heartily at his own words as he glanced in your eyes. 

- You're an idiot, I swear - you snorted hearing his ridiculous question. - One. And we do math.

- One - he repeated, licking his lips slightly.

This strange feeling got even worse as you felt his breath on the skin of your breasts. It was like a sudden switch, it wasn’t an innocent joke anymore, but uncovering something that was hidden till today . The imprint of his lips was very delicate. You sensed his caution, almost as if he was afraid you'd fall to pieces when he touched you there.

- Hey, but you said it’ll be just one - you immediately pointed out to him when he pecked your second breast.

- One for each, you can't be so ungenerous - he smirked with a gleam in his eye. - What if the other is sorry? - he asked, sliding your straps back into place and reaching for your top.

You sighed heavily as he turned it over. - I won’t be better, i’m just  warning you - you said whimsically, letting him put it on.

- I'll take it as a challenge - he raised an eyebrow slightly, giving you a lovely smile and slid a sweater over you.

He sat next to you and reached for his notebook. - What did she say there? Do we need a quadratic function here? - he asked completely seriously, writing down the data from the task.

Dylan──artist! artist! artist!! mainly sculpture work but also trad painting and murals!

Dyl has quite a hard time in school to begin with so the thought of going on to do more school literally seems like torture to them. They already have a small commission based business with their art (mainly portraits but they've had some murals and two sculptures!) so all they'd really need would be a boost in outreach. Dylan might be persuaded to take community college classes for specific types of art if only for the experience and the qualifications but scholarly college/university? nuh uh no way!

Shay──head empty, no thoughts??? he's struggling to see sense in American colleges or universities... Not that English ones were any better... He keeps pushing the thought of it off but he knows in his heart that it won't be for him... but what else is there?

What is he... good at? He's good at maths, he guesses... Video games??... Making his friends laugh, helping strangers smile... Quite honestly I can see Shay stumbling is way into YouTube or TikTok stardom just by being himself! He's naturally charming (in a heartwarming way not a flirty way) and very entertaining. Lmao if C ropes him in to their gap year travel plans he'd be down for it─he doesn't really have a yearning for travel but spending time with his friends on what is essentially an extended vacation (which turns into a learning and helping experience he really enjoys) he's so down for it! Kinsley──her mother demands university classes in law... but her mama would've told her to follow her heart, right?

Kinsley has... Expectations... placed upon her. For her to go to university and double major in law and business so she has a choice in which avenue of the family she wants to continue with... And she might take on the business classes but not for law or accounting... She remembers when she was younger, when her mama was still alive (when her mother still cared) and they attended a fashion show─a runway─and she was... mesmerised. Kinsley doesn't know if she wants to design clothes or rooms or what but she does know that following her mother's path is slowly killing her... she just doesn't know if she had the strength to disobey.

J──if J could never work a day in their life they'd be just fine! Certainly not in law or politics, just to spite their mother they'd be a stripper!! (In reality J is very good with engineering and would do well with cars and motorbikes! The dream of all dreams is to actually design one under their name!)

J is very good at school, they simultaneously put the work in and are also an information sponge that doesn't need to work that hard at all... That doesn't mean they want to be in school more than they legally have to be! They're stuck in a limbo situation currently, between wanting to spite their mother (who wants them to clean their act up and follow her into politics) and setting a good example for their sister, Arabella, and not completely wasting away their education... They're not going anywhere until Bells is safe for their father's eye (and wrath) and no longer under their mother's thumb but they wouldn't mind travelling (especially going back to Italy to visit family!) J might go to university for a more in depth education in motor engineering─which is what they're both good at and really into, but most of all it's something that would just kill their mother's plans and spirits so... that might be the plan after all!

Theo──something to do with music... or! Yes, the environment! Theo knows that while their parents have cast dark shadows, they would support Theo with anything they want to do─so much that they feel like they could do it all!

The thing is, most of Theo's long term dreams all need some sort of further education and they can't do them all at the same time (that and they're still kind of scared of failure and their dyslexia only adds to their anxiety) but! becoming a Horticulturist or a Conservation Scientist or a Tree Surgeon may just be worth it! And hey, if C can convince them and MC into going on a gap year to travel the world then Theo gets to help the environment and participate in different music scenes!! (A plan seems to be formulating in their brain)

kim gyuvin.

the one person in the world who you can’t stand at all. Everytime you’re around him all you see is red. To you, he feels like a consequence sent to you from your past life like you must’ve angered the heavens for someone like gyuvin to exist in your life.

So what exactly did he do?

Did he perhaps hold one of your family members hostage and plan a well-thought murder plan? Were you past lovers and he crushed you, leaving you in heartbreak and anguish? 

Well…it was for a series of unfortunate and odd reasons.

You had actually known gyuvin from eight grade, that being your first year of being classmates and seatmates.

He was a new transferee in your class, introducing himself as someone who had recently moved from Australia. He was a freakishly tall and handsome boy and immediately became the class heartthrob on his first day. He was also friendly and easy-going, getting along with almost everyone within his first week.

You were his seatmate in his first year.

He was very chatty. He greeted you every morning and would occasionally bug you with random stories and questions in class. You often shrugged him off, trying to stay focused in your classes, responding to him with simple nods and uninterested replies. You never said much, putting on your cold facade as an attempt to get him away from you.

But he didn’t care and continued to be ‘obnoxious’ to you every day. He then just got used to your cold and not-so-friendly personality.

He wasn’t exactly the ardent type of student, always blowing off his exams or even sleeping at times during class.

Most of the time, because of how carefree of a student he was, he never really bothered to bring his own supplies like a notebook or let alone a ballpen. So everytime when it was needed for an activity or exam, he’d always borrow from you. 

Every single time you lend a pen to him, he always happens to lose it. And when you asked to give them back, he’d tell you he’d give it next time or he’d insist on just buying you new ones since he was a rich kid anyways,and he, in fact did as he’d buy you a new set of pens every month to make up for losing it. Although you got annoyed and wanted to just stop lending him your pens knowing how careless he’d be anyways, you just continued to lend them, knowing how most of them were from him. You were basically his own pen supplier and keeper.

He’d also doodle on your notes or grab your hand and casually doodle on it, leaving a bunch of silly drawings or hearts and stars.

“y/n look at my portrait of you.” He proudly shows of the poorly-made distorted drawing he made of you, which he left next to your recent math notes.

“I guess you can call me picasso, aye”

“it looks horrendous and oh my god stop drawing over my notes!”

He just wouldn’t stop bothering you, no matter how many times you told him to stop, he’d continue doing it anyways. He’d simply laugh it off when you were furious.

Later in 10th grade. Your class had football for PE. You were assigned as the goal-keeper of your team while gyuvin was one of the strikers of the opposing team.

There was one point left for your team to win, you were determined to make sure your team would take the win for today.

Gyuvin was surprisingly good, being one of the best players hard carrying the other team. 

He speedily kicked the ball through the opposing team, swiftly dodging their every move as he passes through them.

He was getting nearer and nearer and you bend your knees, preparing your stance, ready to catch that ball in your hands.

He was finally near you and with the speed and momentum, he kicked the ball immediately towards you. 

You were about to catch that ball but it was moving at an alarmingly fast rate. 

Before you could even catch it, it had unfortunately landed on your face. 

Although you were happy he didn’t make the goal and his team lost, in the end you suffered from a terrible headache and a painful nosebleed.

He apologized and apologized and even stayed by you in the clinic but you ignored him, thinking that he might’ve done it on purpose knowing how competitive he was.

You were furious and you were sure you’d be out to get him the next time.

In eleventh grade, he asked you if he could switch seats with you for one class to sit with his best friend, junhyeon. You agreed and didn’t think much about it.

Until next period came and you arrived back to your seat, gyuvin had drawn a smiley, leaving a little note saying “don’t sulk anymore” with some bonus pencil shavings on your desk. This was the final straw for you and it was enough to rile you up.

You went to gyuvin and yelled at him, telling him to stay away from you and your things.. He simply scratched his head and flashed you his silly smile in return, saying a little sorry. You were furious but he was still giggling while you were boiling in anger. He was the most unserious person you have ever encountered in your life.

He’d always do something odd and you’ve told him off so many times and he’d somehow just play it cool, laughing at you when you’re mad.

You truly couldn’t stand his antics, always ranting about him to your friends. They all never really understood why and said your reasons were just stupid but gyuvin somehow always got on your nerves in everything he does. He was your (one-sided)arch nemesis all throughout high school. You wished to never see him ever again after.

You are now a second year in college.It was a time for you to get serious and work hard as your future and career was now on the line.

You dedicated all your time and effort into studying and your other passions. Your best friend, woonggi has been pestering you to go out on a date with someone for the past year. He had offered to set you up on a date numerous times and each time, you rejected.

However there came a time where you asked woonggi for help on getting respondents on a survey you needed for a subject. He was an expert in socializing and was friends with almost every first year student so he would be a huge help. He continuously rejected your request out of spite for not accepting his date offers.

You had gotten desperate to the point you begged him, saying that you’ll finally accept his date offer in exchange. That’s when he agreed to finally help you.

So here you are. All glammed up, dragging yourself to the restaurant where your date was set. Woonggi said your date had picked the restaurant that was located across your campus so you were grateful it wasn’t much of a hassle to get here. 

You enter the place, finding it to be quite fancy yet also campy with the restaurant being decorated in an old-school sorta style. With vintage red chairs and white clothed tables, some antiques being displayed in the corners and some retro-esque patterns on the walls.

You figured your date was perhaps old-fashioned.

Anyways, the waiter in front welcomes you and leads you to your seat where you nervously wait for your date.

Another thing, you had absolutely no idea who your date was. Woonggi had only told you a few things about your date, one that it was his roommate, two, he was a very handsome man and other than that, your date was really a big question mark. 

Deep inside, you were a little excited. Although you dread the thought of going to a date or the idea of romance in general, having absolutely zero romantic experiences or crushes in your life, you decided to give it a chance to see where it can take you. It was a small date and you were sure that it wouldn’t be serious so it probably wouldn’t hurt to try.

5 minutes had passed since the time you’ve set. He’s not here. It was only a few minutes so it’s probably fine.

15 minutes passed. You were getting slightly impatient but you gave him the benefit of the doubt, hoping that he didn’t stood you up because you wouldn’t want to waste your time waiting. You order your meal already, hoping he’d show up anytime soon.

35 dreadful minutes passed. A bunch of people came rolling in the restaurant and it was starting to get busy. You started getting really impatient. You text woonggi, asking him if your date was still planning going to show up. (Which at this point, you hoped he wouldn’t come so you could leave.) he tells you that your supposed date hasn't been responding to him either and insists that you wait because he might’ve finished classes late since it was lunch time anyways but you were tired of sitting there alone while waiting. You texted woonggi to tell him to move the date or to just simply ask for another favor.

So you stood up, ready to pack up your things but you then hear the sound of the front door ringing. 

You stop in your tracks when you hear the front doorbel ring, spotting the man by the front door. His hair was light brown and he was dressed quite nicely in a black sweater with a white button-up under it paired with a pair of black wide pants and a beige coat. He was talking to the waiter at the front so you weren’t able to clearly see his face.

The waiter turns their back and leads the man, finally revealing his face.

Your mouth opens in shock when you meet eye-to-eye with him. 

Surprise Surprise

It was you the person you hate the most in the world, your (one-sided) enemy gyuvin. 

You hadn’t seen him since senior year of high school, surprised to know that he was going to the same college as you when you never really saw him across the campus.

You mentally curse at yourself for agreeing to this date, you preferred to have failed your class rather than go on a date with him.

You both settle down into your seats and gyuvin apologizes. “hey I’m so sorry, I uh was doing some schoolwork in the library before getting here and I wasn’t looking at the time so i got carried away.” he scratches his neck and awkwardly smiles.

Dead silence fills the air, an awkward tension rising between the two of you. You hadn’t seen each other in so long and after what happened last time in high school, you didn’t know how to stir up a casual conversation.

“Anyways I didn’t really expect to meet you here y/n, long time no see.” He says and you nod, giving him a small smile, trying to hide the fact that you were lowkey annoyed at him for being late mixed with the fact you were also nervous now that you’re on a date with your proclaimed high school arch nemesis.

“Well how have you been?” He asks. 

“I’m actually majoring in BS psych, I guess I would say it’s been fun but really busy. I’m still adjusting around here, you know it’s really different from our hometown. And to be honest, I didn’t expect you to go this school, yujin told me you weren’t going to move.” You say and He lets out a light chuckle.

“I’m taking up law here and I didn’t expect to either, I was also terrified of moving but I changed my mind, I think it’s a great choice. It's been really fun.” He laughs.

Your younger brother, yujin was a close friend of gyuvin’s, from being in the same football team in your old school. You initially wanted to stay at your old school, concerned that your younger brother would have a hard time adjusting to going to school alone but at the same time, you wanted to move to a school with a new environment and a better program. Yujin really didn’t want you to move, being the clingy little brother he was but yujin was a teenager and was already a mature boy so you told he would probably adjust well without you anyways and you weren’t always going to be around him.

“Oh how is yujinie by the way! You probably miss him, don’t you?”Gyuvin teases.

“Oh he’s all grown up. Honestly, he was annoying as hell but I do miss my little brother, I hadn’t seen him so long cause you know, college. But I’ll probably go see him during summer break.” You say. You haven’t seen yujin for about three months as you barely had the time to go back home due to the overwhelming number of deadlines and projects you had this year. College was a huge pain in the ass and you were excited for the upcoming summer break.

“Ah I see, I miss him too.” He says as he once again digs into his meal. 

“Woonggi’s your roommate, right?” He nods as he takes a sip of water from his glass.

“How did he get you on this date? Or what was your reason for going? I kinda just went because he begged me for the past year to go one, oh my god.” He lets out a small nervous laugh. You wondered why woongi so desperately wanted you to see gyuvin for the past year.

“Oh uh about that, it’s really embarrassing but I asked him to set me up on one. It wasn’t that I was so desperate, I just wanted to meet new people yeah well ironically he set me up with someone I’ve known and  my long-time high school crus-“ He coughs at the last word and his cheeks unexpectedly start heating up. He lightly pounds his chest as he chokes.

“Oh shit, are you okay?” you ask him if he’s okay and you give him his glass of water. He nods as he hurriedly gulps the glass of water.

“long-time high school crusmate, I mean classmate, that’s what I was supposed to say by the way!” He says, seemingly panicked for some reason.

You arrive back to your dorm, ready to bury yourself into your bed after haivng a long day and that one unexpected and weird date with gyuvin.

You were glad it was over. As you had finally laid your back on the bed comfortably, your phone rang. You grab your phone and to your surprise, it was your brother calling, he barely called you and often, it would’ve been you reaching out to him.

“Yujin! How are you, it’s been awhile.why are you calling me for the first time in like forever. You missed me so much didn’t you?.”

“Ahh I’m fine and ew no, uh I just wanted to ask you if were free for the summer?”

“Of course! I’m on break.”

“Uh hanbin hyung is inviting us to come over for a week-long outing in the summer.”

“Oh that’s interesting..who’ll be there?”

“Well all the other hyungs from the football team as well as some of their friends and my other friends. He told me that you can invite yours as well! i think., jiwoong, matthew, of course hanbin oh and! gyuvin hyung.” You felt nervous when he brought up the last name. You were certain that you weren’t going to see him again but to spend time with him for another two weeks after spending one hour was dreadful hour today? 

“Oh..uh wait I’m not sure if I’ll go.”

“But you said you that you were free and you know we haven’t seen each other in so long, we’ll probably only spend time together during the outing..” he whined.

Well you truly didn’t want to be around gyuvin but you couldn’t bare to not see yujin anymore because you’ve missed your brother so much and he missed you too. Yujin was all that mattered.

“Okay. Fine, Oh god you’re so clingy”

Tbh I like the idea of Astarion taking embarrassing pictures of the band, maybe said pictures get found and while yes, they would absolutely want to murder him for most of them some of the pictures are actually pretty good, one ends up as an album cover, and he accidentally gets roped into becoming their official photographer (/social media manager?)

As much as he puts off bard vibes, Astarion will always have the musical instrument ability of a peanut to me. I imagine he can carry a tune and prob has a pretty okay singing voice but he’d have no fucking clue what to do if you put an instrument in his hands

Also they are 100% not playing math/prog rock oh god, Gale may (not so) subtly try and suggest it but in my heart they’re playing rock/metalcore-adjacent shit cuz I'm a metalcore/rock guy and I’m indulging lol

HEART PIRATES WEEK 2024 - Part 4 of 9

I told myself last year that I was going to participate in Heart Pirates Week this year, and by thunder I'm going to participate in Heart Pirates Week!

Day Four: Ikkaku - Night

669 words; this is me pouring one out to the times I worked late shifts, especially the midnights; this one is very safe for work, actually, but does reference potentially disordered eating out of one (1) individual, so that’s a thing to watch for I guess; again: what is proofreading lol

Shift assignments were honestly not the worst thing in the world, but honestly… most of them had experienced much worse. Three sets of mandatory shifts, eight hours each; that would last for a month before everything was reassigned, four shifts of six hours. The months would cycle as such, with people getting shuffled back and forth with little care as to where they ended up. Things were always new and different that way. Besides, most people still hung out with one another even when they weren’t on their mandatory shift, making things somewhat different from the traditional sailing vessels.

Then again, when one rides in a submarine in a world of sail and paddle boats, everything is a little different, isn’t it?

The only thing that wasn’t different, Ikkaku knew, was the overnight shift. It was her sixth month in a row working the overnight detail and she was beginning to wonder if the goobers that drew the lots every month had it out for her. Uni had tagged her out of the boiler room for a break, allowing her the chance to head to the top deck and enjoy the breeze that they were afforded thanks to giving the engines a break and unfurling their own sail.

It was quiet, peaceful even, as she listened to the soft sound of the waves against the metal hull of the ship. They had already passed into the climate zone of an Autumn Island, the gentle currents guiding them the rest of the way to their destination. It was the sort of silence that was reassuring and calming for some and yet restless and loud for another. A thought of the Captain crossed her mind; he was likely pacing around his tiny cabin with no sleep, no dinner, and no plans to rectify either. She sighed heavily; might as well check.

Trying to not make too much noise, Ikkaku went back below deck to the mess hall, where she found the log where everyone who watched the Captain eat something. It was last updated by Bepo that morning (dry breakfast cereal, coffee, banana); the math wasn’t difficult. When she couldn’t find whichever idiot was supposed to be on kitchen duty, she scraped together what she could find (an apple, some carrots with salad dressing, a tin of herring) and brought it along with the herbal tea that Bepo instructed everyone how to make. She went to the Captain’s quarters with the tray in-hand and knocked on the door. Sure enough, Law opened it much faster than if he had been sleeping, and the stack of books and papers on his desk wasn’t helping any.

“What’s this?” He eyed the contents of the tray and scowled, realization slowly creeping onto his face. “I’m not hungry.”

“You haven’t eaten since breakfast.”

“How do you know?”

“A birdie told me. Now are you going to eat or am I going to have a snack while I clean out the boilers?”

The Captain thought about that for half a second before taking the tray and closing the door behind him. Ikkaku stood there and waited for his brain to catch up, then his manners. In moments he was opening the door again with a cowed expression on his face.

“Thank you,” he mumbled. “I know you’re not my mom, or my maid. Mechanics have better things to do than watch over me.”

“That’s right,” she replied. “I will beat your ass if I catch you not eating on my shift when you’re up during it. You understand?”

“Yeah.” He didn’t make eye contact as they stood there, the doorway suddenly feeling rather small. “Can I go now?”

Ikkaku patted the Captain atop his head and smirked. “Yeah.” He then retreated quickly, which allowed her to head back to the mess hall and write down in the log that food was at least accepted before she got back to Uni and the boiler room.

At least she knew the rest of her sift would be quiet.

IT'S LORE TIIIIIIMEEEEE

SO

This is my theory on the Numberjacks' (and meanies', kind of?) creation and anatomy. To begin with, I'll talk about how I think they were created.

The Brain Gain Machine is quite obviously not fully machine. It can move, talk and a lot of weird green goop is involved??? Which I don't think would be there if it was completely machine. So I think it is a cyborg. And it originally looked something like this. I think it is parasite-esque, using the sofa as some kind of shell. My lore theory/AU(?) says that there were 2-3 of these, the others being destroyed and this one being damaged, so it was modified to be a cyborg. Since the Numberjacks and Meanies are somewhat alien, I think they all share a godlike creator that sent the Brain Gains to Earth to then later send signals to them (via the 'cables' on top of it) that 'spawned' the characters. The other Brain Gains would have been the ones that created the Meanies.

Numberjack birth I guess?

Since they are literally maths, the Numberjacks are just physical forms given to mathematical concepts/structures. Since they are created by the Brain Gain Machine, they do not need to reproduce (hence not having reproductive organs).

'But if the Numberjacks are maths given physical forms, what about the Meanies?' You might ask. Well, since they are more complex, with more specific abilities of their own, they are physical forms given to concepts, for example, topology (in Shape Japer's case).

Now on to the anatomy of the characters.

Their organs are somewhat similar to that of humans, but do not have all of the same ones. Since, as I've said before, they are just maths given a physical form, they do not grow or change in any way naturally. (The younger characters would be pretty small if that was the case.) However, since they are still living beings, they need to eat to survive. It'd also be pretty obvious if they did need to use the bathroom because Zero, One and possibly Two would be wearing nappies/diapers.

I think they'd also have an organ that I will call:

a Changeheart.

Which would be of similar size to that of their regular heart, except it gives them them a mild ability to change how things are mathematically described (and since the way things are described can't be changed, the thing being described has to change itself). The reason this would work is because I think the godlike being I mentioned earlier would be the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis given form, and the hypothesis is that our external reality is a mathematical structure. (You can tell I did a lot of research on this lol)

'Waste' products from their stomach are burned as fuel by this organ.

The changeheart gives out pulses (presumably bioelectric? Idk I'm not that good at science) containing the change that needs to be made to the surrounding area's structure. The Brain Gain Machine picks up on these pulses, concentrates them and sends them to a specific location to be used by another person with a changeheart.

The reason it has the same green goopy stuff as Brain Gain is because the Brain Gain itself has a changeheart, just a really big and more complex one.

Now on to human forms! Since I feel like it should be explained for various reasons.

Since they are 'aliens', they would not be born with a humanoid form. I think several other characters other than the Puzzler and the Numbertaker have humanoid forms since it has been implied that they have done things that only humans would be able to do (mostly shown in the audio stories). They may have one opportunity to visualize and shift into a human form that will be that form for as long as they live (which is forever). Since visualizing a human form means knowing what a human looks like, they would've only seen humans as they are usually, which also means their human forms would not have... you know. And anyway since they are all technically biologically agender they couldn't do that.

Cbs ghosts prediction (and therefore I guess potential spoilers??) under the cut

Okay so my wild theory for who killed Alberta is that it was (at least partly!) Thomas Woodstone.

Like we know some long-held secret of Hetty’s is gonna come to light in the next few episodes, we know we’re gonna find out who killed Alberta, in the trailer released for the tail end of the season we even get a glimpse of Hetty as a ghost in the midst of a big event that, based on the 20s-era costumes, is likely the night of Alberta’s murder. Hetty has adamantly said Alberta wasn’t murdered but just died of a heart attack on multiple occasions, suggesting she has a vested interest in the truth remaining hidden. The writers have also followed a trend of putting Hetty B-plots with Alberta A-plots (Alberta’s Fan, The Podcast, Alberta’s Descendant) which means that when big clues are revealed related to the murder, Hetty is almost never present (with the notable exception of the letter discovery), meaning we don’t get to see if she reacts to new reveals in a way that would suggest she already knew the information—for the most part she's kept fairly separate from the murder investigation. If Hetty knew who the killer was, why would she hide it for a hundred years…unless it was one of her own descendants who did it or was in some way involved.

Thomas is the only immediate relative of Hetty’s that we’ve seen; also, there’s the fact that his name starts with ‘T’ (I know, so does Alberta’s sister’s name, Theresa—but the show seems to be setting her up as a red herring way more than the actual killer imo). I’ll be honest, I don’t exactly know how to do the math on this one when we have no idea of the year for the flashback he’s in, and we also don’t know how old he was when Hetty died (or even exactly what year she died). But if he was still a child when Hetty died, as she implies in The Family Business, and we assume she died in the 80s or 90s, then he could reasonably be in his 40s-50s and the current owner of Woodstone mansion the night of Alberta’s murder. This would also put a whole new dimension on Hetty’s statement that she watched “generations of Woodstones make mistakes in this house”, and to the flashback we see of Thomas where he struggles with uncertainty over whether a particular girl is “the one”.

In less concrete evidence (as though any of this is “concrete” lol)—cbs ghosts continues to use the occasional bbc ghosts plot point; Hetty is based off Fanny, and I think this could be their spin on Fanny discovering her husband having an affair with a man, a discover that led to her husband killing her. In this version, Hetty’s son is in a secret relationship with Earl, and it’s Alberta who gets killed, with Hetty the only one who knows the truth.

We also know that the reveal of this secret will test one of Hetty’s “most enduring friendships”; depending on Hetty’s reason for keeping the secret, this theory could mean the friendship tested is either Alberta (because Hetty hid the truth about her murder for so long) OR Isaac (if she kept it secret because she wanted to hide her son’s involvement with another man). The phrasing of “most enduring friendships” makes me feel it’s slightly more likely to be Isaac, especially considering they were officially deemed besties in A Date to Remember.

I could be way, WAY off base, of course…admittedly, this theory doesn’t really account for the fact that Earl does go on to date Theresa, nor does it explain Hetty’s seemingly enthusiastic reaction to the discovery of the letter in The Liquor License. Still, my money’s on Thomas having something to do with the murder, and that being what Hetty has kept secret for so long.

…..actually, thinking about it, maybe "devotion" wasn't the word i was looking for 😅 sorry, i'm not a native speaker so i wasn't aware the religious connotations were so strong. but i really like your interpretation, and it was very kind of you to not dismiss it! i guess i was looking for something stronger and more emotional than "loyalty". because to me, shinae's actions read not only as "you were a good friend to me so i'll be a good friend to you", but also as "you mean a lot to me and i don't want to lose you". idk if there is even a word that captures this?

and not to get too analytical but i find it interesting to compare nol to minhyuk in that aspect. maybe you will disagree but imo shinae's actions aren't necessarily romantic. i believe she'd be just as affected and do the same things if it was minhyuk, who is similarly meaningful to her. except with nol, there is a different layer to it. there is the soulmateism she isn't aware of (yet), but she IS aware of her heart thumping and not being able to hold his gaze, there's also the change in his behavior, and her attraction to rand which she still has to unpack (it's not just for comedic effect it's obvious she's projecting lol) and i cannot wait for her to do the math and realize what's happening lmao it will likely take her some time but that's fine. she'll get there 👍 and yes yes yes after everything these two (and kousuke too) have been through all i want is a happy ending whatever that may look like 🥺 and therapy for all of them. maybe they can get a group discount /j

That is a REALLY good point about Yujing. It's partly why I do believe this piece she's working on started with her friend at the root - it HAS to be worth risking her career and potentially life. Yujing surely knows the risks she's taking. I remember at the beginning of 151 she tells her friend that what she's working on might take several years, but that it's something her friend would be very interested in. If Manli is the friend Yujing has that was sa'd, then it would give her a reason to chase the story, I think. Once she finds out Nol pled guilty, though, she calls her mysterious contact and the story that once was seemed like it would take years suddenly has only the amount of time as Nol's sentencing.

Isn't that interesting? I still am not entirely sure what to make of it. Clearly everyone expected Nol to plead not guilty, for the trial proceedings to take place, for Shinae to give her testimony. Also something that stands out to me - Meg was told her testimony wasn't needed, that it wouldn't matter if she testified anyway because it'd get thrown out and before Nol could get much more out of her, Yui appeared. Not so subtle, right?

That's a small tangent lol but the point is: yes, I think that this is an important story to Yujing, not just for her journalistic integrity, but for something more personal. Vindication for a friend? For multiple friends? Because while I don't know if Yujing is aware of the full extent of how Yui has raised Kousuke, I think she knows enough to sense otherwise. She was disappointed to find that Kousuke hadn't changed, much like Nol is disappointed he hasn't changed - in a way, they've been rooting for him to come to the conclusion we have, right? They've been waiting for him to really comprehend the full scope of his life the who his mother is.

Another interesting thing is that Yui absolutely tries to play her tricks with Yujing, to put on that maternal mask, but Yujing doesn't even bother entertaining her. Also, that day that she was interviewing Nol, Yujing wrapped up with Yui's entrance. She definitely has an inkling that Yui's presence would compromise Nol's responses and make him uncomfortable, and she could probably deduce that was exactly what Yui was hoping for, to meddle more than she already had.

And that comes to another point about Yui. She notes that what she's doing with Nol is below her paygrade and she's doing it as a favor to Rand, but I have to wonder if it wasn't rather self-serving. Nol's drug-related charges link right back to Yui, and we have enough to deduce that this isn't the first time Yui has provided such drugs. If you haven't read this post yet, please do! It poses an interesting link between Kousuke's college incident and Yui providing drugs.

All this to say: I think the story must be very important to Yujing for her to tackle it, knowing who Yui Hirahara is and what she's capable of. But it also leaves us wondering what kind of protection can Rand even provide? He couldn't protect Nol. He couldn't protect Kousuke, though perhaps he was just too late. He can't even really do much to protect himself. And the way the judge managing Nol's case just so happened to retire? We know she pulled some kind of strings, intimidated someone, something. She has so much power and we don't even know the extent of it all. So. What kind of protection can Rand even afford her?

But yes, I do worry about the outcome of this story, even though I also look forward to it. It feels like it will end up being a bombshell in a lot of ways. I also wonder about how the setting of ILY plays into this. In the past, quimchee has referred to it as the United States of Korea - not quite Korea, definitely not America, but as the story has unfolded and characters have gone to and from America, England, Ireland, Japan, does that mean we definitively are set in Korea - and if yes are we following Korean laws? Libel and slander in Korea are a big deal - you could sue someone for running a story defaming you, even if they reported the truth! And again, with the contacts Yui seems to have, I have to wonder what her reach is.

I guess that's what makes Yujing seem like such a cool and formidable character. I want to know what she knows lol i want to know what her angle is. Also while I'm talking about her, here's something interesting I just noticed. Yujing spoke of Kousuke and Nol with familiarity when she interrupted their fancy meal. She said that it was a surprise to see them getting along enough to eat because the atmosphere would be hostile whenever they were in the same room together. There's also that history between her and Nol and her dog Senator. It raises some questions - when has Yujing been around them together? Especially because of the way Yui played dumb about her; it could be an act altogether, asking if they went to university together full well knowing it's so.

Also one other thing while I'm on this subject lol. The morning that Yujing saw on the news Nol pleaded guilty, she was going through a news story about an altercation between Nol and Kousuke. Without knowing the angle of her story, I wasn't sure what this had to do with what she's working on - sure the framing of Nol as a bad person plays into it, but also - during his interview with Yujing, before it got cut off, he says to her "It's not the first time the truth has been twisted in the media to fit a narrative". Is he speaking about that article, the one that frames him as the aggressor? Is that the one Kousuke has that fabricated memory of? Ahhhhhhh the more I think about what Yujing is working on the more desperate I become to read it!

This will definitely be coming hopefully soon! It's just something that's been on my mind as I reread lol. Like you said, it's very delicately woven! For me, there's something about watching two characters really come to matter to each other; it's not something I feel like I'm good at writing myself, but it's something that just really gets to me. I'm definitely ILY for the story and learning about their pasts, and seeing what will come of everyone, but the possibility of romance is just the icing on the cake, tbh! I really enjoy scenes where we get to see Shinae be honest, and we tend to get those when Nol is involved lol. (But also while looking at some earlier chapters I got weirdly emotional re-reading Yujing and Shinae's first meeting at the mall, when she helped pick out clothes that flatter her and Shinae asked if it was weird or wrong to favor comfort over style and Yujing reassured her it's not. idk it was a nice little moment, Shinae deserves all the reassurance!)

But I definitely get what you mean! I think devotion DOES work - frankly I'm not a particularly religious person I think of devotion as lol one of those foundations for a lasting marriage/partnership lmao. And I don't think it necessarily needs to be seen as a romantic thing, either! I just enjoy the religious imagery of it because it makes it feel somehow... idk, transcendent? Since right, it's a stronger word that loyalty is! And I do agree that her devotion, her dedication, her insistence on being there itself is not inherently romantic, which is what I love about it!

Idk how to explain this so please bare with me lol. It's like... to me romance isn't a raging forest fire, because eventually that kind of fire will just. Burn up and one day all that will be left is ash. It burns hot and strong and it's passionate, until there's nothing left. But a steady burning flame? Something that isn't so extreme, isn't so magnificent? But it's steady and constant, it's reassuring. You can trust it to continue. Sure a candle will eventually burn itself out but it's not like that wildfire that just burns and consumes until there's nothing left.

So when it comes to romance and things that seem otherwise mundane, I love it SO MUCH. Because I think it really plays into that narrative of how do you even define platonic vs romantic love? Shinae could very well have the most platonic feelings about Nol and still want to sit by his bed and keep watch over him, to make sure he's okay, to make sure he doesn't go out of her sight again. She absolutely would do the same thing for Minhyuk, someone we know is one of the most important people to her outside of her family. She did it as much as she could for her father when he was in that same position, too.

She went from telling him not to be too familiar with her lest he make his girlfriend mad at him waaaaaaay back before the formal to LMAO holding his dumb hands because it brings her comfort so she assumes it will do the same for him. It's all those little things!!!!!!!!

I, too, am waiting for her to have that realization that this version of Nol, this side of him he's shown her, that intensity, is SO much like Rand LMAO. I fully agree - that was not simply for comedic affect LMAO that was a little seed planted (although, hands down, the conversation Nol and Kousuke have following that is one of my FAVORITE scenes. There's something about the way Nol is just. Talking to Kousuke like maybe they don't hate each other and maybe they aren't at each others' throats all the time, casually noting that sure he finds Dieter's mom hot but is he going to SAY so and Kousuke just like PLEASE SHUT UP THIS IS SO UNCOMFORTABLE such a FUNNY scene lmao).

BUT ANYWAY YEAH IT'S EXACTLY THAT!!!!!!! I love love that isn't grand and overstated. Like, that's fine and I definitely can enjoy a really grand gesture, they're fun to read! But I love the kind of love that blooms from a seed that was planted long ago and maybe you didn't even realize you were nurturing it but eventually it grows and will bloom and that bud has grown and it may not have completely unfurled itself but. In time!!! Soon!!!!! It's the "calling insistently to check up on you and worrying even when i'm told you're okay because i want to hear it for myself". It's the "defending you even when you aren't around to see it because it's not an act i put on you are special and i don't like it when people mistreat you." It's the way!!! Her acts of care!!!! Linger even after she's gone!!!!! It's the way he always seems to reel from whatever mark she's left - her hands bunching up his coat, the earbud she returns to him, the stupid chicken nugget hand holding. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH all these little moments that could just as easily remain platonic, except they're stirring something up!!!!!

That they are each people who aren't good at receiving care from others but end up doing exactly that for each other! And how they receive that concern and care! Nol always seems SO affected by the times she pays attention to him, when she notices things. The medicine she bought him!!!!!!! Because he is a person who deserves to be taken care of!!!! When no one else but Nana does that. ;A; Like alfkjakfjkjaf lmao see I'm accidentally going on the tangent already but that's! Exactly what I love about them. That, as you put it, they are so delicately woven, it's been happening all along but NOW we can see that tapestry they've been weaving. We can see exactly how they've affected each other in a way that's led to these flirty little fingers dancing, to this additional layer atop something that could be otherwise so platonic. It could be Minhyuk and she'd still be asleep at the side of his bed, but it's not, it's Nol, and that makes all the difference.

GROUP DISCOUNT THERAPY FOR ALL!!!!!!!!! lmao I really do look forward to the end even though I HATE things ending and I tend to hold off finishing them as long as I can lmao because I get sad but ILY is special because I DO hope as many characters can get the happy endings they deserve, can find the comforting peace they need. I think everyone will always carry some kind of baggage, but bagage isn't as heavy if you can share it with someone, if someone can lighten the load. I mean that very platonically, too - I just want to see these characters find some kind of peace and have someone who understands, who gives them that space.

Were you named after anyone?

Nope. My dead name was just somethin' my mom saw on a computer screen AFTER I had been born and decided it looked cool and she "had to name me something". My current name -- *and this is the first time I'm, legit, admitting this out loud online, btw. Yer gettin' privileged information here, darlin'. Lol! -- is Dax (aka Dakota). The truth behind that one, is that it's one I chose for myself after my best-friend passed away. He lived in the house next to me, but his address was the street behind the one I live on, aka Dakota. Dax for short. He was like my brother and he moved away when I was 13 years old from health issues that cost insane amounts from hospital bills. His parents and him moved somewhere cheaper in order to be able to get him help, but he passed away from severe stomach pneumonia. I've gone by Dax ever since. Three guesses as to which OC muse of mine was also named after him. *Hint: he has Boyd's face. ;)

Yup! One boy, one girl. 'Cept they're basically adults now.

Nahhh. Neverrr! What makes you say that!? Pfffft! I don't even know what sarcasm is.

If we click. Emotional/mental connections are everything. The rest is superficial.

Hazel-ish. Kinda like... green with gold flecks and a little gray so... depends on my clothes. Sometimes they look blue, cuz they kinda reflect my outfit. It's weird.

Uhh. Yeah. A few.

What are your hobbies?

Currently? Hiking and swimming in the ocean. Once I'm well again, I'mma headin' back to Neskowin, with a quickness.

Yup! Two guinea pigs and two cats. My mom has a dog and hers is dog aggressive, so we can't get another one until she passes. But my daughter and I are gonna get one after we move to the beach. We have our hearts set on a lab or golden retriever-lab mix.

What sports do you play / have you played?

Track in middle school. Lifted weights and did 4-H with my horse and barrel racing back in high school. Nowadays, I just hike and go swimming.

I don't like answering this one. It's somethin' I have a personal issue with so... I don't like talkin' about it.

Favorite subject in school?

Pottery. Lol! That and math, cuz I was surprisingly good at it. I represented Oregon in a nation wide competition at Western Oregon State College in my sophomore year.

Dream job?

Honestly, I'd love to be a DJ. Like... mix my own music and turn out some sick EDM stuff. I've been a karaoke DJ and been in a band. I've played around with turn tables and done some sick mixes at a couple raves with my friend, DJ Komotose. It was a long time ago, but I keep catching moments where I'll just hear a sound or a beat and instantly think of how I could mix in other beats and drop a bass, then bring in a line or two of dialogue and it just sorta... spawns this need to create? But I don't have the money for the equipment so... meh. I'd need a few grand to get a decent mixer and computer set up in order to make demos. Probably won't happen anytime soon, cuz my kids, animals, and moving costs (as well as living costs) are all top priorities. We're just barely getting by, as is. But!... never say never, am I right? ;)
