Imagine if you were a gay or bi man who tried a certain firefighter show because of all the attention it was getting for one of its mains having a later in life bi awakening.....and between seasons you ventured into its fandom in search of material to tide you over til the next one. And you're greeted by a deluge of posts and fics that are just cheerfully homophobic towards one half of the newly out bi character's canon relationship on the basis of 'well he's not the RIGHT gay guy' and pushing the idea that actually its fine to cheat on him because Reasons and he's sexually predacious based on......behind the scenes implications people have divined like they're reading fucking tea leaves.

But don't get it twisted....this fandom, like all fandoms, really cares about representation!

Sorry not sorry, but we really need to kill this idea that fandoms are welcoming and inviting and inherently progressive when they're frequently insular and reductive as fuck. Every single fandom I've been in has had major trends of people doubling down on their own headcanons and fanon interpretations of the characters and willfully enacting trends aimed at running off people who like the 'wrong' characters (usually characters marginalized along one or multiple axes), like the characters in the 'wrong ways' or other bullshit.

Scott is a Bad Friend fics overtaking Teen Wolf fandom was not incidental, it was a FEATURE of the fandom, because the vast majority of that fandom did not want to share its space with anyone who had the nerve to like its main character. Survivors complaining about or criticizing the prevalance of rape fics in a certain fandom has in my experience always led to a reactionary UPTICK in those fics, with gems like 'this character can, will, must be raped' in the tags making it crystal clear that some of these fics exist because how fucking DARE anyone try and push forth a narrative not agreed upon by Fandom Main.

I could cite examples for so many other fandoms, with the commonalities always being that vast majorities in these fandoms are explicitly reacting defensively to being asked to be more mindful of fandom trends revolving around or exacerbating racism, homophobia, transphobia, rape or abuse apologia, ableism, etc....

With the most prolific fucking rallying cry across countless fandoms being "No the fuck we will NOT be doing that," because lolololol.....

Fandom is an inherently progressive space, didn't you hear?

I think I figured out why "anti-zionism isn't antisemitism" bothers me so much for something I agree with.

Israeli Jews need a place to go. I feel like a lot of the anti-zionists sharing their opinions forget this fact. We can't just say, "You have to leave Israel, but you can't go anywhere else either." That's a recipe for a new Jewish genocide if I've ever heard one.

With the rise in hate for Israel, a part of Jewish history, and the rise in antisemitism in general, a lot of Jews don't feel safe in their neighborhoods. I've heard many talk about making Aliyah, aka moving to Israel, to be safer. Frankly, I don't feel safe. I live down the road from a place that was shot up less than a decade ago, and now antisemitism is rising.

There are anti-zionists trying to shut down Jewish run businesses. If they can't make their living when they live now, where do you think those businesses are gonna go? Many menorah lightings have been canceled. If they can't celebrate their religion safely, where do you think the Jews in those areas are gonna go?

To them, there's only one possible answer: Israel.

This is where zionism comes from. This is why people move to Israel.

If you're anti-zionist, the best thing you can do for Palestine is be kind to your Jewish neighbors. Make them feel safe and welcome. Because if they don't, they'll go someplace where they do feel safe and welcome: Israel.

And my own thoughts…

I’ve struggled with feelings of helplessness through the genocide in Gaza but tiktok has given us hope in the dark times. Through sounds and filters even those of us who were struggling financially ourselves were able to help. Watching videos all the way through to get them their lil payout, using sounds and streaming songs, playing with filters, it all accumulated to real tangible aid. When tiktok shop rolled out it became almost annoyingly omnipresent but activists found a way to make it work for themselves. Content on Gaza was not getting the reach it had been so they utilized the algorithim and used shop posts to get their message out to a wider audience as shop videos are given more push. They would advertise Palestinian owned businesses to generate larger cashflows to affected families and then donate their sponsorship money to charities delivering aid on the ground while giving updates on the crisis and other resources to help.

And they are ripping that support network away because they do not like how we are speaking or what we do when we assemble together. Through Operation Olive Branch and the TikTok intiative Pass The Hat i saw gfms that were stagnant be filled within a week or less, most of them well over 100k+ a piece. And when they met their goals the creators sponsored a new family and fundraised for them until that one was full. MILLIONS were raised for evacuation funds through tiktok.

We are STILL fundraising for them and the US gov is cutting us off BECAUSE OF THIS. AIPAC lobbyists were caught on hot mics saying tiktok needed to go because of our sympathy for the Palestinians. This ban, should it go through, will be inextricably tied to the Palestinian genocide in our history books.
