S to F— a tier list of how healthy a relationship would be with these different BSD characters
Content warning: mentions of toxic relationship, manipulation, death, minor Spoilers (akutagwas part but there’s a warning) etc… this is also not edited at all.
Characters: Atsushi, odasaku, Tetchō, Fukuzawa, Kunikida, Yasano, Ranpo, Gin, Chuuya, Higuchi, Edger Allen Poe, Sigma, Dazai, Akutagawa, Tachihara, Ango, Jouno, Mori, Fyodor, Nikolai.
A/N sorry if theres any writing mistakes in this, I wrote this for eight hours straight with an ear infection and like four hours of sleep, so if there’s a spelling error please tell me.
Tumblr media
S tier:
Atsushi(he’s shown to be very nice, always helping others, and in that one scene he bought a bunch of stuff for for koyaka to make her happy even though he didn’t have much money, he also help everyone without thinking and saves everyone despite their past EX: Koyaka)
Oda(Oda is shown to be a very kind person, who’s extremely kind Ex helping taking care of Dazai and watching over him, while having a strong moral compass, not wanting to kill anyone while having normal goals like wanting to be an author/wanting to wright, he also shows a lot of love for others, such as trusting Ango and jumping out a window and being completely ready to save the kids he was taking care of while before that making regular visit to them, probably one of the most normal people in the entire series. I don’t believe there would be many issues with him other than the fact he is dead. You could probably have a very healthy relationship with Oda.)
Tetchō(Tetchō is shown to have a lot of empathy and loyalty, such as when he stops Jouno from antagonizing Aya and when he fights Kenji so he can find Jouno to make sure he is alright. I honestly believe that Tetchō is probably one of the most normal characters in this series as of now. Of course there are the normal issues that I will be bringing up again and again such as you probably won’t be able to see him much etc etc, but relatively normal in my opinion. )
A tier:
Fukuzawa(Fukuzawa is shown to be someone that helps others and gives them a chance no matter what EX Ranpo and Yasano, But he is also a work alcoholic Ex that one scene that fukuchi said that Fukuzawa was still married to his work. It really depends on when you would start dating Fukuzawa but if it was earlier in life I believe he most likely would have broken up with you for his work(and also for you safety) but I think he would be on of the healthier options out of BSD cast)
Kunikida(other than Kunikidas long list of things he wants from his ideal women, I believe he would be a healthy partner. Kunikida is shown to on Multiple occasions to save multiple kids and risk his life, he also canonically makes sure to take care of Dazai and his other friends EX Katai. I honestly believe he would be a very caring person to date as long as you like a lot of plans and schedules.)
Yasano(I believe Yasano would be a very kind and caring person to date, though I believe she would be a bit of a handful at times, you would probably have to carry her bags around but I believe she would do anything to save you in a time of need, Yasano is shown to not be afraid to stand up to others EX that one scene where that one businessman was picking on her, asking if she what her job was and she said she was a doctor and she was about to break that man’s hands. Yasano is also shown to care of others she is close to EX that one scene where Ranpo and herself are in one of Poe’s books and she gives him her glasses to give him the motivation to solve the case in the book. I believe Yasanos love be more quiet but she would still make sure to show it.)
Ranpo(I believe there are many misconceptions about Ranpo, a lot of people mistake Ranpo as some super cocky at everything character, but they forget that Ranpo is not ashamed to say that he doesn’t know how to do things alone EX ride the train even though Ranpo is an adult and he’s not afraid to admit he can’t go alone on the train or that he’s not fit to be the boss of the ADA, he is only cocky in the means of his detective work, because he KNOWS he’s good, he’s not being cocky, he’s stating a fact, because Ranpo IS better than everyone else when it comes to him deducing things. Though Ranpo does have a blunt and sometimes arrogant attitude he can admit his short comings, like admiring that he couldn’t figure out one of the cases he was doing, or when he was 14 he admitted that he didn’t understand others. I think he would be interesting to date but he could be slightly overwhelming at times because he may sort of lazy, but I believe he would respect anyone he was dating like he respects Fukuzawa or Yasano.)
Gin(probably out of the two Akutagawa siblings, the least affected by their trauma. There isn’t much about Gin that is known to the anime and I Haven’t watched the BSD wan in a while, but Gin Is a very kind person and you can see in I think the fourth or fifth season she protects everyone from herself when she lost control of her knife. over all when she is seen with akutagawa in that one scene (and including the episode where Higuchi is chasing after Gin) she seems to be overall quiet and respectful.)
B tier:
Chūya(Chūya is kinda of a mixed bag, on one hand, he is a red flag (I swear to god if I see one of those jokes where it like “Chūya doesn’t have any flags, I’m going to find your house and beat you, I’m so sick of that joke, I see it in every comment section talking about Chūya, can we please get a knew joke BSD fandom, all the jokes we have are dead.) people often say Chūya is a red flag since he is in the mafia, which is Valid, which is why I have him so low, other than the fact that he is the mafia I believe Chūya would be in A tier maybe even S tier but I may be a little biased , but, excluding the fact Chūya is in the mafia, Chūya is probably one of the most loyal characters in the ENTIRE series, since it was exclusively said in Stormbringer that “Master Chūya is the kind of person who will never abandon those who have helped him, even if they end up betraying. That is simply who he is.” Chūya is the kind of person to keep a promise no matter what, Chūya is also said to be respectful to women, and from what we see from the show he is respectful to everyone but Dazai but Dazai purposely makes Chūya upset, so I don’t hold Chūya to blame. I see Chūya as a loyal and kind partner, and who would be pleasant to date if it weren’t for the fact that he was in the Port Mafia, so you would have to be in the mafia you to if you wanted the relationship to work. I do also see people say Chūya would be violent because Chūya is often shown to be angry, but, when Chūya is shown to be angry it’s usually for a valid reason, such as Dazai insulting him, or for him to be put in a life or death situation, such as in Dead Apple, which most people would also do, since there is a risk for so many people dying or being around people that purposely try to make you angry. So I think Chūya is that bad to date if your ignore all the crimes, but everyone ignores Dazais crimes, so I think they can do the same for Chūya.
Higuchi(We haven’t seen to much of Higuchi in BSD, though I would like to, and it is a shame that we haven’t, from what I have scene in the anime, manga, and BSD Wan, I think Higuchi is somewhere in the B to C tier, though love her. The reason I place Higuchi so low is because of her intense jealousy around Akutagawa, someone she is not dating. It is seen In the first season that when she sees a women with Akutagawa (it was Gin, which she did not know at the time,) she gets extremely jealous, going as fare as to stalk the two of them and chase after Gin, which is very possessive. The loyalty of Higuchi is also seen in the first season when she does everything to for Akutagawa with zero regret and brushing it off as it just being her job. Higuchi would probably be a very loving and nice girlfriend to be with but a very possessive and jealous one, which isn’t the worst thing to be on this list, considering some of the other BSD characters. While researching this list, I remember how funny Higuchi can be, while partnering up with Atsushi to find how who the women Akutagawa is with she was very witty and she really funny to watch, along as in the wan she was also pretty funny.
Edger Allen Poe(Poe is a decent person, he is shown to be kind, ambitious, and smart, though he clearly thinks of himself less than Ranpo. Poe is a shy person which is shown clearly through out the anime and manga. Poe is arguably a red flag since he did try to kill Ranpo, but he does show some concern if Ranpo does die, so over all I think Poe’s fine except his a little off his rockers sometimes, but who’s not anyway. I believe Poe’s one of the characters that could date someone outside of his own job, but he is pretty shy, so I think you would have to be introduced to him in order for anything romantic to happen.
Sigma(I honestly think Sigma would be okay, but the main issues would be his A, his inexperience with life, I think he would be very stressed because he only has the memories of the past three years of his life and he really wouldn’t know what to do, and B, he is part of a criminal organization, which considering this list is pretty normal, since it’s seems everyone in Bsd has at some point committed at least one minor war crime or killed at least one person. The main issue with Sigma being in a criminal organization is that Fyodor is there and if Fyodor knows about you you’re already dead and will probably be used to manipulate Sigma. Overall, Sigma as a person, though inexperienced would be an okay partner, but because of Fyodor dating him could be extremely risky for the both of you, so for the better, it would be better to have a unspoken close relationship that would only work if you worked closely to Sigma, but this would still inevitably be found out by Fyodor.)
C tier:
Dazai(I’m pretty sure this is a hot take, but, dating Dazai would not be that great, but before Dazai Stans come for me let me explain: Asagiri (the author of BSD) said that in what ever relationship Dazai was in he would manipulate them, so it is canon that he would be a little toxic, but looking at his other friendships, you can kinda see how he acts, he’s a womenizer, flirting with pretty much anyone he sees and offering them a double suicide, he also doesn’t let anyone in on his past or his secrets and is overall distant. I believe Dazai would manipulate his partner so they don’t figure out about his past, and if they somehow do, I believe he would always keep them at arms length and you would have to be someone like Fyodor in order to figure him out and make him actually exspress himself, and I think if you could figure him out one of you would leave (because you deserve better) or Dazai feels threaded and he would find a way to manipulate you into breaking up the relationship for him or he would just disappear. But I don’t want that to discredit the fact that Dazai can be a a nice person, but everything nice about him has an equal and opposite amount of evil, which is the issue about Dazai, you would have to be able to tear him apart so you could get close to him, but he would always try to keep you away or you would have to be stupid enough to date him and think he truly loves you. I honestly think you would have to take up a caretaker role for Dazai and you wold have to have known him since his Port Mafia days and be able to corner him and dissect his character for him to let you be close with him, overall, toxic relationship.)
Akutagawa(canonically, I think Akutagawa would be hard to date, Akutagawa has been shown in the past to be violent and cold to others, at one point even hitting Haguchi in the first season, though. I believe Akutagawa has had character development since then, and has started to become kinder, I still believe Akutagawa has a lot of healing to do before he can ever have a healthy relationship with others. I do want to mention the fact that Akutagawa does have a heart, he did say he was happy for Koyoka, and MANGA SPOILERS he was assigned to take care of Aya after Bram died, so I believe we could see him heal more in the future of the show. MANGA SPOILERS DONE we have seen Akutagawa be able to work with others more, and better, so I do believe he will rise the ranks of this tier list soon.)
Tachihara(Tachihara is a pretty nice person that looked up to by some from what I have seen in the anime and manga, though he doesn’t have much screen time, but from I have seen, he’s a really troubled person who is emotionally driven, he spends most of his life trying to get revenge against Yasano, and he often argues with Gin, though him arguing with others and acting all hard could have been part of the ruse he had been doing when he was a spy for the hunting dogs. Tachihara is a kind person though he has a lot of internal conflict, with the constant internal battle of if he was a hunting dog or a port mafia agent, though when does choose a side, he sticks to it. I believe Tachihara would be someone who would have trouble starting a romantic relationship do to his job, but the same goes for every port mafia agent of hunting dogs member. I believe Tachihara would be a protective partner, I believe this since you can see that Tachihara has dedicated his life to someone he loves dearly (his dead brother) that he would do the same for someone he truly loves.)
D tier:
Ango(I hate putting Ango here because I love him so much, but I’m not putting him here because I don’t like him, I’m putting him for other reason I will explain. I am putting Ango so low because of his job, I love Ango, as he is my favorite character in the entire show, but because of his job he often betrays people, and I believe he may carry a lot of guilt and shame for what he has done, which I believe is shown when he helps Dazai out of the port mafia, by erasing all his crimes. From what I can see Ango is a hard working government official who does care about others deeply and he struggles to not grow attached to people on his undercover missions Ex Dazai and Odasaku. I believe with Angos constant betrayals he would have many people after him and dating someone would only add more stress to him, and if someone he loved died again I believe he would never forgive himself and he would try to make up for what he did like he does Dazai. Like most of the other characters in this list I believe you would have to work with Ango in the government in order to have any relationship with him, since in any other circumstance he would most likely betray you. I don’t mean to display Ango as only a traitor, since he’s not, you can see he is an actually kind and caring man, but he is often put in the position to make hard decisions, though when he helps Atsushi and Koyaka escape in season 4/5 you can see him choose the side that he knows is innocent and to work for his own personal motivations instead of a company’s.
Jouno(in the show Jouno is shown to be pretty sadistic, though he doesn’t join Fukuchi when he offer Jouno to help him, and instead chooses to help others, though he does torment Aya. So I do believe that Jouno is a good person but if you had to date him I’d say it would be difficult, especially with his job most likely keeping away from you for long if you don’t work with him, so I would say another character where you would have to work with him if you wanted to spend any time with him.)
(We’re skipping E tier because everyone that’s going into F tier doesn’t deserve to be put at a higher letter like E. It also messes with my my color coordination system so I’m sorry if you love the letter E and I didn’t mention it.)
F tier:
Mori(the only way you meet this man is if he found you in the hospital nursery, no other words, the only reason people like him is because Bones(the studio that animates BSD currently) gives him pretty privileges instead of Fyodor, though for the three people that actually find his character cool because of his past are chill, but still, Mori isn’t some hot mafia boss, he’s legit a manipulative pedophile, the only reason Mori is ever good is if he can be used for the plot.)
Fyodor(Fyodor may have a nice voice and he may be attractive but don’t let that distract you, that man will kill you. He will ruin your life and make you depend on him (I’m taking that from the fact that during the prison arc he told Dazai to do that.) Fyodor would most likely use you for everything you were worth or keep you around because he’s fractionated by you, in the best case you are as smart as Fyodor so you can entertain him, any other way your probably going to get killed petty quickly by him since for most people he doesn’t show much care or interest in except for Dazai since Dazai entertains him, and and any other person he just uses Ex Nikolai or sigma.)
Nikolai(Nikolai would most likely have an unhealthily obsession with you and then kill you, in the show it states that he wants to kill things he loves because he wants them to be free. I would say Nikolai has a good heart but he also is Insane, he’s done some of the most graphic kills in the show, but he does show sadness when he think Fyodor died, so he has some empathy but if you were to date him your gonna have a nice knew head piecing with a 15 caliber built in your skull.)
————————————————————————
(PS: don’t let this discourage you from reading/writing fanfics about characters, I’m not doing this to hate I’m just showing what I think it would be like in cannon, but in fanfiction I think it’s fine to change things about character (EX making Dazai not manipulate reader) to show how much the character loves reader. This isn’t serious by any means or meant to hate on your favs, again, please don’t send me death threats<3.)

BSD Chapter 108
In the narrow room - Part 4
Finally a longer chapter, and it was such a roller coaster!!! Now I don't know what is true anymore and I can't wait to see what will happen next.
Tumblr media
Please note that neither my English nor Japanese is perfect. Please let me know if you find any mistake!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Sigma shows the piece of paper he picked up earler (that has the word "Help!" written in Russian) to Fyodor and asks him if he is the one who wrote it. Upon seeing the piece of paper, Fyodor has a breakdown. He starts screaming and keeps saying "Help me! Help me" in Russian. When he finally calms down, his experession changes and he looks like another person. He asks Sigma what year it is.
Atsushi is fighting Akutagawa. He keeps calling to Akutagawa, saying that he knows Akutagawa is still there. Because he didn't kill Aya, and Atsushi knows that it is because of their promise. He tells Akutagawa that the 6-month limit has not been over yet so it is not yet time for them to fight each other. Akutagawa doesn't seem to listen and keep fighting him, forcing Atsushi to launch a counter attack. But when he is about to his Akutagawa's face, he stops himself because he thinks he is gonna kill Aku with the tiger strength if he is not protected by Rashomon. Akutagawa takes the chance and catches Atsushi by his arm and leg by rashomon.
Atsushi shouts to Akutagawa to wake up, reminding him that he wants to become stronger. He says that the real strength is not when you compare it with each other, but it is the strength to face with your own self, and that is the "real strength" that Dazai is looking for. Upon hearing that, Akutagawa has some reaction, and Atsushi thought it has worked. However, Akutagawa goes a head and rips Atsushi's arm and leg off. (Bram is seen watching that while saying 'He is not that naive')
Back to Sigma and Fyodor, the "new" Fyodor tells Sigma that the Fyodor that Sigma knows is the bad guy, and that he can not stop "him". But he can see hope in Sigma so he takes out a knife and asks Sigma to take it. He says it is the "Sword Kladenets", and it may look like a normal dagger, but it is similar to the holy swords and is the only thing that can kill "the one that is his ability". He holds it out to Sigma while saying sorry because the bad Fyodor is the one born out of his weakenesses, and that he has let his own abiliity take over him.
Sigma lowers the knife bun and reaches out to take the dagger, but when he gets closer, Fyodor turns back and stab him with the same knife, saying 'Just kidding'. Fyodor then tells Sigma that it is just an act to get Sigma to lower the knife. And that multi personality act is so cliche, but it can make people lower their guard, and that the dagger is no more than a normal life he took from the guard.
Fyodor asks Sigma if it is painful. Because if he becomes an agency member, that pain will keep coming to him as the agency is Fyodor's enemy. He then asks Sigma if he still wants to become a member of ADA despite all of that. Sigma tries to get his gun back but his move is all read by Fyodor. Fyodor then tells Sigma that now that he knows how determined Sigma is, he will let Sigma touch him and read whatever he wants to read, if Sigma has that courage to do so.
Fukuchi is on the call with the Secretary in the government, who has no option now but to tell him how to unlock One Order. The Secretary questions Fukuchi about his action, and tells Fukuchi that he will have to throw away all the Fukuchi fan merchs he has at home now (TN: Sorry it is so funny I have to include it xDD). Fukuchi tells him to just do that and finally opens One Order.
Aya and Bram sees a bright light from the tower when One Order is unlocked and Bram says there is just secondds until the world burns.
That's all for this month's chapter! The next one will be released on August 4 (Japan time).
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed the chapter just like I do.

SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 114.5 AHEAD
akutagawa and atsushi are going to be the ones that kill fyodor/the tripolar singularity.
Tumblr media
long yap session ahead because Apparently writing theory posts is something i do now
so! tripolar singularities are a thing now. (which, What the Fuck, Asagiri). there are two ways that singularities can form in bsd: 1, when two abilities cancel each other out, and 2, when an ability user uses their ability on themself, multiplying the ability until it forms a singularity.¹ im assuming that the tripolar singularity functions similarly to the latter, like Verlaine and Chuuya, who are both man-made singularities. that would make it extremely powerful™️. in Stormbringer, Verlaine was only defeated because Chuuya used Arahabaki. so we’re able to assume that defeating a tripolar singularity would be even more dangerous. but why would Atsushi and Akutagawa be the ones to defeat it? and how? (<- rhetorical question) well!! glad you asked. they would become a singularity :D
in this essay i will---
The End of BSD Season 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(^ sorry for quality, just took these off of pinterest)
now we know that the floating fukuchi is the tripolar singularity. (at least that explains the three circles on his mask). and we know that atsushi and akutagawa are going to be fighting him. it wouldn't make sense to animate this scene if it wasn't important in some way. (also, sidenote, but i love how akutagawa is able to use his ability without dazai's coat. he's finally growing outside of dazai's influence 🥲). Yes, this doesn't really prove a lot. but atsushi and akutagawa are like glowing and flying which. im pretty sure they havent done before. so there could be something there? also, "just the two of us?" "do we need anything else?" 😭 AND parallels to the earlier sskk vs fukuchi fight, maybe :D
which, mentioning parallels....
Stormbringer: SKK vs Guivre and its Possible Parallels to SSKK vs the Tripolar Singularity/Fyodor
Disclaimer, i havent read stormbringer in a while so if theres any mistakes in my recollection... sorry.
In Stormbringer, if i remember correctly, Chuuya activates Corruption for the first time to take down Guivre, Verlaine's Singularity, and Dazai nullified the corruption afterward. In Stormbringer, Dazai and Chuuya were still in the earlier stages of their partnership, but Chuuya still trusted Dazai to nullify corruption.
Tumblr media
Eventually, the trust between them grew and they became known as Soukoku, or Double Black. Dazai fosters the partnership between Atsushi and Akutagawa in an attempt to turn them into Shin Soukoku, the second Double Black. Because of this, there are many parallels between skk and sskk. Both start off disliking each other, but grow over the course of many fights as partners. Soukoku's fight against Verlaine was a turning point in their relationship that allowed that trust to grow, and trust in each other was necessary to defeat the singularity.
Atsushi and Akutagawa are still in the beginning stages of their partnership with each other, but we can see how their relationship evolves throughout BSD. battling the tripolar singularity together by becoming a singularity themselves, learning to understand and trust one another, would be a large milestone in their relationship as Shin Soukoku.
Dazai's comment in BSD Beast
Tumblr media
yet another disclaimer because i am Broke™️ and do not have enough money for these light novels: i have only read up to BSD beast vol. 3, and have not read the light novel yet. i found this quote online. i apologize if i end up misinterpreting it. but this quote definitely implies that Atsushi and Akutagawa forming a singularity is possible. and in order to do that, they have to understand each other.
"...I needed to have you fight. I needed you two to face death to get you to understand each other."
Atsushi and Akutagawa have fought with each other, against each other, many times throughout BSD. Against each other, against Fitzgerald, in the Rats of the House of the Dead base, against that mf from 55 minutes, against fukuchi... and these fights have helped them understand each other, making them work better together. i saw a post a while ago about how skk is a relationship founded on trust but lack of understanding, fyolai is based on understanding but lack of trust, and sskk is becoming a relationship with both full trust and understanding and like. yeah!! they are learning to trust each other and understand each other!! akutagawa and atsushi are both privy to information about the other that even their respective sides don't know, atsushi's hallucinations and akutagawa's lung illness being the two largest ones.
If understanding is the basis of what allows two people to form a singularity, Atsushi and Akutagawa are almost there. It makes sense for their character development and development as a duo to progress there.
anyways !! this was pretty much just me yapping, idk how to write these theory posts or whatever, or if any of this makes sense (i rlly need to reread some of these light novels). but yeah. sskk vs fukuchi final fight ‼️

Thinking about SSKK
Thinking about SSKK
About how Atsushi went from not knowing a man other than from a photo, then that man trying to take him for a bounty. A bounty no one knew about that was in the underworld.
That man takes off his leg and activates Atsushi's ability, leading Atsushi to know "hey! If the bitch hits first, I'm allowed to swing!"
Thinking about Atsushi yelling at Akutagawa, not for himself but for Kyouka, but also because Atsushi comes from a place where he can see Kyouka, and it allows him to stand against Akutagawa, which is more than Akutagawa ever got from anyone other than someone in a higher position. Grounding Atsushi firmly in the "hey! This asshole can keep up with you despite having literally no training!" position.
Thinking about them fighting Fitzgerald together, and how Akutagawa's first use of Rashōmon to not harm that we see was to SAVE Atsushi and help him defeat Fitzgerald.
Thinking about how it's only been maybe a YEAR AT MOST, and the combined power of these two have taken out major players, and nearly took out Fukuchi.
Thinking about how they've come so far, because when Akutagawa asked if they ever needed anything else in the anime, Atsushi FUCKING RELAXES.
Even though this man has tried to kidnap him. Has tried to kill him. He's worked alongside Atsushi. He's grown alongside Atsushi.
Thinking about SSKK.
Thinking about their growth and the trust they learn.

Just like everyone else, LOVE your charts
Could you do one with reader fighting someone and getting hurt?
NOW WITH THE HUNTING DOGS! There are 21 hot men on this chart. Trying out a new format too to make it easier on me when writing (:
also I've noticed there isn't an agreed upon way to spell tetcho's name. i'm rocking with tetcho. you can't stop me. i've already done it. and i'll do it again. tetcho.
Tumblr media
after you get hurt he loses his mind killing the person who hurt you. he would then tell you "i can't see you get hurt like that. i had to do something to protect you." he may or may not be ashamed of what he's done; more than that, though, he's happy you're alive.
Fukuchi (uses the full extent of his powers and then tearfully confesses to you when you're safe), Bram (summons hoards of vampires even though he swore he wouldn't; he loves you and would do anything for you), Junichiro (is usually so passive but will kill someone with his bare hands when his lover is attacked right in front of him), and Poe (never uses weapons because he has his sharp mind; he doesn't think twice before shooting down the man who hurt you).
when he sees you get hurt during a fight, his first thought is "fuck, i have to save them. i can't lose them, not here, not now." you try to tell him to leave you and complete the mission, but he refuses, maybe even tearfully. you're coming home with him. you're not dying here.
Atsushi (tearfully holds you against his chest the whole way to Yosano, who's the only one he trusts to save you), Oda (struggles to balance the importance of the mission with his need to keep you safe; fuck the mission, you're his priority), Nikolai (decides in an instant to use his ability to take you far, far away from this conflict; it's not worth it anymore, not without you), Fukuzawa (abandons his sword to catch you before you hit the ground. He never should have let you pick up this fight; he should have solved this all before it could happen. He'll ask for your forgiveness, just as soon as he saves you), Mori (uses others to fight his battles. His goal is always to protect himself and his loved ones above all else. The full force of the Port Mafia comes down on anyone who defies him, but he himself holds you gently while transferring you to safety), Dazai (isn't in the Port Mafia anymore. When he was a younger man he'd have killed everyone in the room, but now that he has someone he's afraid to lose he chooses to run), Ango (refuses to think you're dead; he knows you're too tough, too skilled to not make it out of this battle. He's still scared, though, and as soon as he reaches you he tells you he refuses to lose you like this so you better get up and start running).
you getting hurt and falling during conflict was the last thing he expected. you're so tough, why would you be so fucking stupid? he intends on asking you right after he takes care of the asshole who thought he could take you away from him.
Tetcho (cooly walks over to you after destroying the remaining enemies. "Are you going to lay there all day?" he asks. "Do better next time... and don't you dare scare me like that again."), Tachihara (goes into a rage. He eliminates the threat, then pulls you into his arms. "You fucking idiot... Don't do that again or I'll kill you myself."), Akutagawa (awakens a new, even more lethal version of Rashomon when you fall. The room is cleared in an instant, and he's carrying you to safety moments later. "I expected more from you," he says despite the wobble in his voice. "So live and prove me wrong."), Jouno (loses his interest in the fight when he hears your heartbeat slowing, so he ends it all quickly and finds you by your shallow breathing. "You're a pathetic excuse for a Hunting Dog," he says, scooping you into his arms. "Let's get you ready for the next fight."), Fyodor (chooses his close companions extremely carefully. It's an affront to God to hurt his comrades--everyone who dared harm you will know that wrath now, and later you'll learn Fyodor's wrath for daring to leave him through near-death).
seeing you fall pissed him off more than anything. you shouldn't have come but you wouldn't take no for an answer. now he's gonna save your ass and give you a piece of his mind (he's so relieved you're safe. you know that's what he means when you tells you not to be so fucking stupid next time).
Chuuya (knows that he could use the full extent of his power to destroy everyone here, but who would save him so that he could be with you again? Ugh, you moron. How dare you make him run instead of fight. Good thing you're worth it to him), Ranpo (isn't a fighter, he's a thinker, and right now he thinks you need to be taken to safety because you were too stupid to stay out of harm's way), Sigma (has a split-second dilemma in which he wants to kill everyone, but moreso he wants to protect you, so he covers you, gets an ally to take you to safety, and when you wake up he's at your bedside calling you an idiot), Mushitaro (finds a way to twist his ability to make you two invisible to the enemy; you get to safety, you wake up after being knocked out, and he's standing over you, arms crossed. "It's about time you woke up, dumbass. I'm over here doing all the hard work."), Kunikida (panics when you fall. This isn't according to plan, and now he's enacting plan B: save your dumb ass, and then go back into the fight alone. When he realizes the extent of your injuries, though, he stays with you).

Chocolate, Horror and confessions.
There were few things akutagawa truly hated. Things like smoke, himself and people who left the book open on the desk inside a library. But something he hated the most was talking on the phone. It filled him with the not needed dread of socializing.
Don't get him wrong, if it's for work purposes with things he had already scripted in his mind to say then akutagawa is a pro in talking on the phone, but if it's chatting for the sake of talking then texting was what he liked to do. Everyone knew that, nakahara-san, his sister gin and even his boss mori-san.
He had hoped his work partner would realize this but from what akutagawa could gather, the weretiger obviously didn't get the memo. Always calling akutagawa up instead of texting. It has been a while since his.. Death, their victory..and His revival and everything was finally going back to normalcy well except the fact that the weretiger now knew where he lived, has his phone number, knew akutagawa on a personal level and most importantly... The fact that they don't dislike each other to that level anymore. Again don't get akutagawa wrong. He still doesn't like the weretiger but he won't kill him.
Actually that's what he did after their 6 month battle, that ended in a draw. A very awkward emotional draw. All that was not the point. The main problem was at the moment, atsushi and his constant need to call akutagawa even if the information passed could be easily passed by texting.
"Soooo... What are we going to do? I mean we can watch a movie?" Atsushi awkwardly insisted. It was one of their unusual post-mission time together, it has started after their battle. When both the party called in a permanent truce. At first akutagawa was irritated that the weretiger wanted to do mundane things after the mission, useless things that wasted his time. But after the third unusual post-mission time. He just didn't question it.
"Of course, what do you want to watch?" Akutagawa played along again before he can ask the question in his mind. Atsushi thought about it.
"What about horror?" Akutagawa blinked. Horror? That's a genre, he wasn't expecting atsushi to choose. The boy was sunshine and rainbows personified on the outside tragic comedy on the inside. Horror was more so his abilities thing. Akutagawa hoped beast beneath the moonlight wasn't the one choosing the movie.
"Sure" Akutagawa replied before adding "do you want something to eat and drink Perhaps?" It was always evident when the weretiger of his was hungry. Atsushi nodded, pointing at the coco packets with a smile that said 'you know what I want'. akutagawa rolled his eyes, he almost regrets making atsushi hot chocolate in one of his earlier stays. The tiger wouldn't stop asking for more after that. "Fine, hot chocolate it is"
"Yes!" Atsushi practically jumped into the couch, getting ready for the horror movie night. Tsk, what type of animal was akutagawa harbouring inside his house? Akutagawa shaked his head before walking towards the kitchen and making a what atsushi desires, if you had come to akutagawa before he had joined the battle against fukuchi and told him that one day he would be making food and watching movies with the weretiger. Akutagawa would have stabbed the person... But things have changed, they have changed, this... Relationship has changed.
Akutagawa could feel eyes on him as he added extra chocolate in atsushi's cup. Knowing the boy had sweet tooth well that's something both of them had in common. Suger was like luxury for them. Akutagawa blow some air onto his own mug that was very hot for him. Before putting the two mugs on a trey and giving it to atsushi, who had already chosen a movie for them to watch. It was a romantic-horror.
"Fancy" Atsushi stated taking his mug from the trey. Akutagawa gave a unimpressed stare "only you can call something as a trey fancy, weretiger"
Atsushi pouted but didn't argue back. Drinking his hot chocolate with a small smile, switching on the movie. The intro begun, introducing all the characters. Two boys raising a little girl, living together. Akutagawa was reminded of kyoka with how innocent the girls opening lines were.
"This was the movie ranpo-san recommend to me, the one I told you about on the phone" Atsushi explained, akutagawa blinked. Oh right the phone. How could he forget?
"Noted. Speaking of the phone... Why do you always call instead of texting?" Akutagawa asked putting his mug on the table as the movie introduced the lore behind some type of enrich creatures. The monster of the story. "Half the things you say can be typed out you know?"
Atsushi slurped his drink "why not?" Akutagawa frowned at the question before answering "because I don't like it"
"You don't like talking to me?" Atsushi sounded almost sad. Akutagawa lightly shook his head, the movie showed how the boys were childhood friends and one of them lost his parents, become the legal guardian of his sister. Giving a vague idea, that the parents were killed by.... Something.
"No, I don't like talking on the phone with anyone" Akutagawa explained "it's a waste of time" He added as the movie gave a surprise jump scare, akutagawa did not shreak or at least if he did, he hopped atsushi who seemed unaffected by the jump scare didn't notice.
"Okay then... I will just start texting" Atsushi took the last sips of his drink as they fell into an unexpected silence. The movie was alright at the most, the only thing good about it was the family dynamic between the boys and the sister. It was evident that the boys had a crush on each other.
"I.. Like your voice tho" Atsushi said catching akutagawa off guard, totally crushing his guard down enough so That---another jumpscare.
"ShiT-" akutagawa physically jumped up, atsushi putting his arms around akutagawa this time. Akutagawa blinked. He just got spooked by a shitty horror movie. Atsushi chuckled a little as akutagawa glared at him. "That was YOUR fault!"
"My fault? How so?" Atsushi was still chuckling before looking at akutagawa with humor in his eyes. Akutagawa glared harder, feeling something warm inside. How can someone like his raspy voice?
"You said you like my voice, it made my guard drop!" Akutagawa confessed. Atsushi raised an eyebrow "so? I was saying what I meant. I like hearing your voice, that's why I always call you. I like hearing you, I lik--" Akutagawa suddenly put his hand on top of atsushi's mouth.
"Shut up"
Akutagawa decided that the weretiger was mad, akutagawa was NOT blushing or flustered. If the weretiger said so, he was misinterpreting his facial expressions.
"I was about to say hot chocolate, lawnmower" Atsushi mumbled under the palm. Akutagawa looked away.
"You like my raspy voice weretiger?" Akutagawa asked unimpressed. "You must be bad of hearing, why would you like my voice of all things?"
"It's not only that, it's also hot chocolate" Atsushi defending, mouth still under his palm, voice still muffled but audible to akutagawa. Akutagawa took a deep breath. Heart beating to fast for his liking. He just recovered from a disease, he doesn't want heart problem's now.
"Well even my sister loves my hot chocolate, so you aren't special in that category weretiger" Akutagawa explained removing his palm. Before looking at the reveal of the boys being in love with each other. Akutagawa couldn't even pay attention properly.
"Why would you like my voice?" He finally asked, as the movie continued to show the boys hunting down the creature and saving the girl.
"Because I like you"
Akutagawa head sharply turned towards atsushi. What? Why would--how did--did akutagawa-- so many questions that akutagawa seemed to already know the answer to. "Why would you fall for me?"
Atsushi stared at akutagawa, Mismatched eyes never looked so uneven before. "I ask myself that everyday. Maybe it's because you died for me, maybe because you are pretty, maybe it's because you are my equal, maybe it's because you have changed so much it makes me proud, maybe it's because you saved me so many times, maybe it's because I gave a vow to myself to protect you after I got you back, maybe it's because we are spending so much time together in which I properly know you now... Honestly I don't know. I just know that I do"
Akutagawa took a shaky breath in. Does he love the weretiger?, he doesn't know. They have spend enough time for akutagawa to know which brand of chocolate atsushi likes, what type of movies he usually watches, after he came back atsushi was the one he felt the most safe with, he did save atsushi against his own mind because his heart suddenly bled out to save someone other then gin, he has changed alot with how proudly nakahara-san boasted about him, they truly are equal.. Each other's equal. Did akutagawa love him back?
The movies epilogue took place but neither of them paid attention. Akutagawa's left out chocolate was cold now, but he still paid no attention to drink it. "How did you know, you like me?" He asked out.
Atsushi shrugged "I just feel happy when I am with you, comfortable and I just want you" It sounded very sentimental. This was probably akutagawa's own horror movie. Romantic-horror. The end credits of the movie started to play. Did atsushi recited this? Was he planning on confessing soon? Did akutagawa like him back?
Akutagawa also feels comfortable with atsushi, enough to have once talked about the slums. Akutagawa also feels happy with atsushi when the said boy is giving comfort or is just simply acting like an idiot... Did akutagawa want atsushi? How can someone who has never seen love, confirm that? Curse the tiger for making him feel these things!
"Do you like me back" Atsushi nervously asked, breaking the laid back persona he was holding for the past few moments. He was suddenly nervous as hell and it was showing. Akutagawa was honestly impressied he wasn't a wreck till now, maybe it's because atsushi was sure of his own Feelings while replying to akutagawa's questions. "Akutagawa... Do you?"----Akutagawa is many things. Impulse being one, indirect being one.
So he wasn't surprised when instead of relying with I don't really know, he just kissed atsushi. Well more like gave him a small peak on the lips.. With his lips. Atsushi stared back stunned, now being the one with no words. A few minutes passed by and atsushi licked his lips.
" Chocolate" Atsushi whispered before smiling like a love sick idiot. Akutagawa looked away, okay Maybe he was flustered.
"I don't know" Akutagawa confessed "I don't know if I like you... But what I make you feel, you make me feel... So I will say perhaps I do"
Atsushi stared before smiling gently. Everything was alright. They could go slow, with many hot chocolate dates, movie nights and each other.
"That's all I need to know for now, akutagawa"

(sorry if this is a double ask I couldn't tell if my first one went through)
I'd love to hear your thoughts on Teruko's role in ch113 if you'd like to share them! I didn't see anything inherently sexist in her role like you did, but I've also only been passively reading the recent chapters and so don't have a lot of context around the character's histories. I thought your original post about bsd's sexism was well-worded and informative so I always appreciate your critical analysis of bsd. if you want share i'd love to read! no pressure though
Hi, thank you! I already elaborated on this in the last ask but I'm taking the chance for a more personal note here: picture me last September, in the (miraculously empty) university library, watching the last season five episode, who knows they've just lost two trains home because the university wi-fi won't work for illegal streaming sites. Teruko suddenly stabs Fukuchi from behind, and I audibly gasp. I can't believe my eyes! This is it! Teruko is killing Fukuchi! I'm going to take back everything I've ever said about the author being sexist! They evidently can't be now! Teruko just killed Fukuchi! She must have done that because he betrayed her ideals! Ideals that she had in her! Ideals that make her her own independent person! That's consistent with how she's always been shown to be loyal to the military, she must have felt betrayed by Fukuchi, in finding out that he was actually a terrorist and betrayed the cause, and that's why she's killing him! She's so smart, she knew she couldn't do it before because she wouldn't have been able to outpower him, so she waited for him to let down his guard and strike when she knew he couldn't retaliate! Teruko has her own agency and free will and decided to act for what she believes in! Fukuchi is apologizing with her, so it must be a matter of betrayal and ideals! What a brilliant plot twist! That's amazing, spectacular, extraordinary, for a woman to conclude this arc! I love Teruko so much!
… And then sexism ensues. Like I know it would be foolish to be mad for what could have been (and I need to stretch that I'm not saying it's a sexist portrayal because it could have been better and more empowering, it's just sexist full stop), but I am a little bitter, I was so ready to accept the author for their newfound feminism and yet I was so wrong.
Tumblr media
Like… I can't put in words how hurtful, but most than anything plain saddening it is to see Teruko here, after having consigned Fukuzawa her sword, take a step back from center stage. Her entrance happened after 19 minutes of male prevalence, and 60 seconds after she's already left. Please, write female characters better than that.
………………….. Then they show Kyouka and Lucy at the airport despite having done absolutely NOTHING at the conclusion of this arc. Literally, why didn't they make Kyouka or Lucy save Atsushi when Akutagawa had captured him (we know why). They didn't even give them a single spoken line. I'm literally begging the author to be at least a little respectful.

Here are @alyssab-123’s thoughts on my other Bsd Ptolomaea thoughts, and here’s my analysis on it:
Fukufuku Ptolomaea
You love blood too much, But not like I do
Fukuzawa and Fukuchi both have a veery long history with swordsmanship but this is Fukuzawa beginning to look forward to killing the war hawks, starting to love the bloodshed and Fukuchi throughout the war itself; assumedly committing war crimes, torturing civillians, women and children.
Heard you, saw you, felt you, gave you, Need you, love you, love you, love you
Again this is interpreting things about their relationship, but its known through Untold Origins that Fukuzawa, for a steady part of his life, was very alone. Fukuchi has been burdened with a prophecy of untold horror, begins to develop his strength and through it he’s found the one person who can keep up with him.
Saying I'm the one, he's gonna take me, I'm on fire, I'm on fire, I'm on fire. Suffering is nigh, drawing to me, Calling me the one, I'm the white light, Beautiful, finite
All of which has culmulated to this point at the airport. Fukuchi had this plan in motion, was there at the Agency’s debut opening, was so tormented by it he got drunk. Fukuzawa’s thinking that his best friend is on the verge of murdering all of his subordinates and then Fukuzawa himself. Only to find out–suprise, suprise, the very ‘naivite’ that Fukuchi said (to Atsushi+Akutagawa) he hated, is the exact reason why he’s going to make Fukuzawa a dictator: his ‘white light’ his apparant ‘goodness’ has lead to this suffering
Even the iron still fears the rot
Basically, Swords. Fukuzawa putting his sword away out of shame and swearing never to use it, then Fukuchi giving him a sword to kill him with
Hiding from something I cannot stop
Latest chapter 116 reminded me of this: Fukuzawa asking Atsushi to give him time to mourn amongst the rubble, telling Atsushi to flee instead of engaging. Becauase they cannot stop this.
Blessed be the Daughters of Cain, Bound to suffering eternal through the sins of their fathers committed long before their conception
This line ngl reminds me of the whole zskk skk sskk thingy, especially in regards to like Natsume, who i’ve made my distaste for obvious. The whole ‘line of abuse’ thingy.
Blessed be the children, Each and every one come to know their god through some senseless act of violence
The overrarching, long living effect that the Great War had on all the kids in bsd. Yosano, Chuuya, Atsushi, Fukuchi and Fukuzawa themselves, TERUKO
Blessed be you, girl, Promised to me by a man who can only feel hatred and contempt towards you
Blessed be you 🫵 Fukuzawa! Dragged up to becoming the god of the world by the man who was going to use your childhood memories to manipulate you into going along with it! By the man who strung you along for years and let you believe it was all your fault!
I am no good nor evil, simply I am
Fukuchi literally being a war criminal and simultanously the leader of the justice team, a national hero with movies after him. Man of a hundred faces. Uniting the world under a dictatorship in order to eliminate war.
I was there in the dark when you spilled your first blood
Going back to their first duel in the dojo with it being Fukuchi’s first time he was actually bested. The way that Fukuzawa murdering war hawks and beaucrats was indirectly because Fukuchi was prolonging the war by killing soldiers on the field and doing fuck all besides it.
I am here now, as you run from me still, Run then, child, You can't hide from me forever
Airport fight, Fukuzawa trying to understand why Fukuchi’s doing it all ans failing. Its very vauge to us just how much of this divine being is actually Fukuchi, and what exactly it is if it isnt Fukuchi. But whatever it is, its still here, with Fukuzawa, at the airport.

Please explain in heavy detail 👀
I thought you'd never ask 😈
First, let me just address that some of the songs aren't included because they simply do not apply to him or do not apply enough to include them
1. Fortnight
The song Fortnight is about Taylor missing what she and her past partner could have had. The bridge repeatedly states the words "I love you, it's ruining my life," as a way to show that as deep as she loved him, he ruined her, inside and out.
Obviously, when you first think of it, you would think that this song could be contributed to Akutagawa's relationship with Dazai up until the conclusion of season 3. He wanted his approval for so long, even after he left Akutagawa behind in the Mafia, and was willing to do unspeakable things to get that approval from him.
While I do think that this could make sense, I'm willing to raise the thought that it's more so related to Akutagawa in season 5, especially the repeated lyric in the bridge. Akutagawa only shows up when he is needed, and he is needed in the fight against Fukuchi. When he and Atsushi fight him together, Akutagwa sacrifices his life so that Atsushi is able to escape alive. Was he only involved at this time because Dazai said it was time? Yes, but if it was purely because of Dazai, why give up his life? Why give up the very thing he fought for since childhood, especially for a man that he swore to kill. Whether it be Dazai’s praise or his understanding for Atsushi, one of the two quite literally ruined his life, and then brought him to his death.
And in regard to the lyrics at the beginning of the song, "But you're the reason, and no ones here to blame, but what about your quiet treason?", that one pertains to his past with Dazai. He became his reason for living, despite the abuse he pushed onto him, and one could only imagine the pain he felt when Dazai left the Mafia.
In short, this song could go either way, but generally could be associated with Akutagawa's past with Dazai, and how it quite literally destroyed him as a person, and that damage carried through to his death, despite him accepting that Dazai did not care for him in the slightest.
2. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
This one is a bit obvious because of the song title, so I'm not going to go into it as deeply, but the name of the song, "My boy only breaks his favorite toys" can literally just be used for how Dazai shaped Akutagawa to be a weapon in his image.
The song also mentions the singers heart being similar to a sand castle, and how she is "Queen of the castles he destroyes." This could just be taken how Akutagwa was one of, if not the prime victim of Dazai's abuse growing up.
Like I said, this one is relatively simple to interpret, because it quite literally could just be taken as Dazai controlling and taking advantage of a young Akutagawa while in the Mafia.
(P.S. if you couldn't tell, a LOT of these songs are related to his trauma with Dazai, but it makes sense because the tracklist talks a lot about Taylor's trauma with her ex)
3. Down Bad
What do you know, another Dazai-trauma related song 😱 (so again, I will be keeping it short)
This song is, in short, a metaphor for someone being love-bombed by someone, and once their abuser has gotten what they wanted from them, they leave them to heal their self from the trauma they caused. While Akutagawa wasn't necessarily "love bombed" growing up, it could certainly be taken as such. When he meets Dazai, he asks him for a reason for living, much like Kyoka does when he meets Akutagawa. Dazai says that he will give him that reason, just for that "reason" to be him being a weapon of destruction, feared by his enemies and allies alike. And once he is shaped into this perfect weapon, not only did Dazai leave him, he was expected to heal himself of the trauma that, not only Dazai caused him, but of the pain of his childhood before as well.
This song specifically could be shown through season one Akutagawa. In the chorus, Taylor says "Fuck it, if I can't have him, I might just die, it would make no difference." Obviously, Akutagawa was hungry for Dazai’s approval throughout the entirety of season one, and that's where he and Atsushi’s initial conflict came from after his introduction into the show.
So, once again, this could show just how desperate Akutagawa was to be approved of by Dazai, so much so that he was at his most desperate and violent at the start of the show/manga.
4. So Long, London
This song is not confirmed(at least not through my source), but it is theorized that it is about Taylor's ex and why exactly they broke up. It is believed that it is because of her ex's mental health, and that could fit perfectly with, once again, Dazai. Had Odasaku not died, it should be pretty obvious that Dazai would have stayed in the Mafia. If he did, then his relationship with Akutagawa would have stayed in tact, as unhealthy as it was for the latter.
The line "You say I abandoned this ship, but I was going down with it" could show how Akutagawa fought for so long to keep what Dazai had given him. It was all he knew, and even when it was bad for him, he did not want things to change, and so he tried everything he could to keep it.
If you've watched the show or read the manga, you can tell the point where Akutagawa stops pushing for Dazai's affection, and simply accepts what was given to him. This can be heavily shown through the line, "And I'm just getting color back into my face, and I'm mad as hell cuz I've loved this place for so long," showing just how Akutagawa realized that he was his own person, and the time he spent obsessing over Dazai was simply years of his already short life wasted on someone who no longer wanted him.
5. But Daddy, I Love Him
When you look up the meaning of this song(at least from my source), it says that this song could be a metaphor for the movie The Little Mermaid, and how Ariel was willing to give up her voice to live the life she desired.
However, when you take that away, the song is about how she loves a boy that her family does not approve of. When she finally finds the boy that her family enjoys, she is truly happy.
This could almost directly correlate to how Akutagawa's feelings for Atsushi and Dazai changed throughout the series.
At the start, Akutagawa had an insane obsession with Dazai. However, as the series progresses, so does his relationship with Atsushi. Dazai could be seen as the initial "boyfriend", unapproved because of his mistreatment of Akutagawa. Atsushi, however, could be seen as the current boyfriend, someone who is deserving of his time because he not only understands Akutagawa, but does not go as far as to make him feel worthless if he does not meet a standard set for him (yes this is just a semi-excuse to start mentioning sskk don't judge me).
6. Fresh Out The Slammer
A slammer can be directly correlated to a jail. With this song, Taylor relates her past relationship to that of a jail cell.
Yes this is another Dazai-related song. Yes, I will keep this one short as well.
When Akutagawa is finally released from Dazai's control, he has to find something else to love for. Whether he realized it or not, that thing was Atsushi. This can be shown through the lyrics, "Fresh out the slammer, I know who my first call will be to," showing how, once Akutagawa was finally able to let Dazai go, he had someone else he was able to fall to, someone else to live and die for: Atsushi.
7. Florida!!!
This song is most likely about leaving a bad situation for a fresh start somewhere else, hence the lyrics, "I need to forget, so take me to Florida, I've got some regrets so bury them in Florida."
Much like this song, Akutagawa's backstory consists of him wanting Dazai to give him a reason to live. He felt as if life was not worth living, so much so that he was willing to fall to anyone he could find that could give him that sense of meaning.
While this song could not only be associated with his past, it can also be correlated to how he died in the fight against Fukichi, and everything that happened after that (i.e. when he came back and told Atsushi "do we need anyone else's help?") The lyrics "I'm haunted but I'm feeling just fine" that Florence sings can almost perfectly show how Akutagawa's development progressed, especially throughout seasons 3 and 5. He is obviously haunted by the demons, better yet the demon(Dazai) of his past, but you can see how, while he hasn't quite healed from it, he's come to accept the situation for what it is. He is at peace with the hand he was given, and though the scars are still there, he is able to function a bit better than he was able to when you compare it to his behaviors in season one and the beginning of season 2, up until his and Atsushi’s fight with Francis.
Another point I feel I should mention is the idea of two other lyrics, one in the chorus("Can I use you up") and one in the bridge("Tell me I'm despicable, say it's unforgivable").
These two lyrics may not be directly related, and while that's true, I feel as if they could be. The lyric in the bridge could be associated with how Akutagawa was shaped to be a specific person, and after that is where the lyric from the chorus comes in. Because he had this traumatic childhood, because he feels as if he is only good for killing, his sense of self worth is so construed that if he is not essentially being used for another's self gain, what is he good for? ("But kotex he learned his worth after the fight against Fukuchi so that can't apply to him!!" Shut up this is about my thoughts, let me put this out there if I want.)
8. Guilty as Sin?
This song is pretty self explanatory in nature, if you've listened to the lyrics tentatively. It's essentially about how Taylor was having fantasies about a man, but the things she thinks about never ended up truly happening, so she is stuck in a constant state of pining for someone she knows she can't have.
Obviously, when you look at the chorus, "What if he's written 'mine' on my upper thigh only in my mind?" is a line that could go with his past with Dazai. The sense of pining makes sense, as Akutagawa was stuck with something similar to this feeling for about 6 years (give or take, if my math serves me right), and he just craved so deeply for approval from the man he was trained by.
However, when you think of the second half of the chorus, "One slip and falling back into the hedge maze, oh what a way to die," is a perfect way to describe Akutagawa's death in season five. Dazai gave him the instruction that, should Atsushi need help, he is to go to him after a signal is set off. Had he not let Dazai give him one final instruction, had he done what he stated and moved on as he was trying to, maybe he would not have died. Maybe he would not have been given the choice of allowing Atsushi to escape alive in return for sacrificing his life. And even with that, even had he went, the choice was his. He could have chosen not to die, but he knew that Atsushi has more to live for than he did. He gave up his life for someone who actually had a purpose to be alive, and as much as he may have "disliked" him, he knew it would be worth it, hence the words, "What a way to die."
There are also the lyrics that open and end the song, "Am I allowed to cry?" Akutagawa never allowed himself to feel emotional pain. We never see him cry, we never see him sad. All we see is his emotions conveyed through rage, because he was taught he was not allowed to feel pain. He was taught that anger is the way to show his feelings.
9. Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?
This song is about how, throughout her entire entire career, she is diminished by just about everyone, hence referring to herself as "little old me."
Dazai says that Akutagawa is, essentially, not a threat in terms of battle. When he is captured, he tells Akutagawa that Atsushi is superior in every way imaginable compared to him. Dazai obviously had to know of Akutagawa's self-worth issues, and he knew that it would definitely be an attack on it, because he believes his worth lies in his ability to fight and kill. He thinks, rather he knows, that Dazai is insinuating that Atsushi is a better fighter than he is.
At the start of the song, Taylor says the words, "The who's who of who's that, posed for the attack." This can be interpreted as Taylor's ex acting as if he does not know her. Dazai does not necessarily act as if he does not know Akutagawa, but he definitely says things to intentionally get under his skin, as does Taylor's ex's words do to her.
In the chorus, Taylor's repeats the words, "I was tame, I was gentle, till the circus life made me mean; 'Don't you worry folks, we took out all her teeth,' who's afraid of little old me? Well, you should be." He was a child when he joined the Mafia. He took on a life of violence because he did not know how else he could survive in the world if he did not bite. The circus could be, not only Dazai, but his entire life in the Mafia. It turned him into the rabid dog he is perceived as, and he cannot change it. He knows he should be feared, but when it comes to the people that really "matter" to him, they feel as if he is not as deadly as he truly is.
Toward the end of the song, the words "You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me / I'm always drunk on my own tears, isn't that what they all say? / That I'm fearsome, and I'm wretched, and I'm wrong," are spoken throughout the bridge. At the end of season one, Atsushi tells Akutagawa that people deserve to be told they are worthwhile and deserving of being alive, and that he needs to understand that. Obviously, Akutagawa knows this is something people need to hear, because it was not something he was fortunate enough to be given growing up. He believes Atsushi does not understand the pain of being called worthless, and does not realize he knows it all too well until season two.
Akutagawa is miserable. I saw a quote on tiktok saying that whenever he isn't furrowing his brow in anger, it is furrowed in sadness, and he just hides how miserable he is under a mask of anger. So he is, essentially, "always drunk on his own tears." And because of how much Dazai degraded him throughout his time in the Mafia, Akutagawa has grown to genuinely believe that he is a person undeserving of anything. He is given fear by people even within his own organization, but at the cost of his happiness.
And finally, in the end of the song, Taylor says, "You caged me and then you called me crazy, I am what I am cause you trained me." Again, another Dazai point. In the start of season two(At least I think it was season two), Dazai punched and then shot Akutagawa for what I remember to be his "incompotence" for killing their sources. This can sort of be mirrored in episode 3 or 4 (I can't remember atp 💀) of season one, when he slaps Higuchi for going after Atsushi so recklessly. Both Akutagawa and Dazai abuse their subordinates because of something they did to displease them.
10. loml
Okay hear me out on this one: THIS is one of the sskk song (I'm gonna ramble about sskk for a minute just bear with me on this).
Think about it, the song repeatedly says the words "I'm the love of your life," and yet the song is titled loml. It almost exclusively focuses on her partner's point of view, mentioning just how much he loves her, or at least seems to. Finally, when Taylor focuses on herself, she says that he is the loss of her life, not the love of her life (this is just my interpretation, not googled).
Similarly, this could be seen through sskk eyes. We see just how much Akutagawa's death affected Atsushi, showing just how he was the loss of Atsushi’s life. On the other hand, they could be seen as the love of each other's lives. They pushed and complimented each other almost perfectly, and even when they do not say it in the show/manga, many of the things they do for each other can show that they at least have some semblance of care for one another; Akutagawa's sacrifice, Atsushi’s thoughts of him whenever he wants someone to help him, both of these can show just how much they truly cared, and Akutagawa's death could not only make him the loss of Atsushi’s life, but also the loss of his own life, because he fought so hard growing up to live, only to be killed when he finally found a true reason to be alive.
11. I Can Do It With A Broken Heart
From looking at the lyrics, you can see that this song is about how, despite suffering from depression, she continued her everyday life as if nothing was wrong with her, i.e. the line "I'm so depressed I act like it's my birthday."
Again, obviously shown in Akutagawa. Despite the pain he felt, he continued to carry out the role he was given. He never stopped his killing, because he knew if he did, he would have had to face emotions he wasn't ready to confront yet, and so he continued on as if he was fine.
And then there's the line after the pre-chorus, "I'm so obsessed with him but he avoids me like the plague." Again, obvious. Akutagawa had such a bad obsession with Dazai, and while Dazai knew of it, still does, he does not give him any wiggle room. He practically shrugs him off every time he sees him, because he knows the pain it causes Akutagawa to feel.
And then there's the topic of the ENTIRE pre-chorus. The entirety of this section is essentially just Taylor saying that she can handle what she feels on her own, and that she can "do it with a broken heart." Akutagawa has an almost identical ideology. He does not want to seem weak, and so he bears his pain in silence, putting up the violent façade he tries so hard to make people believe.
12. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
Another song about his Dazai-relates trauma. And while it is this, I would say it isn't so much him still craving Dazai’s approval, it is more so after the point he has accepted that he will not get it, and finally realizing that Dazai is not the person he wants praise from, hence the line in the pre-chorus, "I don't even want you back, I just want to know if rusting my sparking summer was the goal." It could then go on to be explained that, while he does not want Dazai’s attention anymore, he wants him to know what it was he did to him, even if he will never tell him ("I don't miss what we had but could someone give a message to the smallest man who ever lived").
In verse two, Taylor is seemingly describing how her ex's treatment toward her greatly differs from how he treats the new woman in his life ("You hung me on your wall, stabbed me with your push pins. In public showed me off, then sank in stoned oblivion. Cause once your queen had come, you treat her like an also-ran").
And then there's the infamous bridge of this song. Honestly, the entirety of the bridge could be seen as what Akutagawa really feels, the words he really wants to say to Dazai for all he had done to him, particularly the part where Taylor sings "I would've died for your sins, instead I just died inside. And you deserve prison, but you won't get time." Dazai was never punished for how he treated Akutagawa. Instead, he got off without so much as a verbal punishment. He was even allowed to join an organization that helped people. You can feel the pain and rage Taylor feels when singing the bridge. She was betrayed, and Akutagawa definitely feels the same. He tried for so long to be something for someone else, and in the end, it got him nowhere.
Finally, the outro. Taylor practically says that he knows what he did, and while she will forget him, never in a million years will she forgive him. ("And in plain sight you hid, but you are what you did. And I'll forget you, but I'll never forgive the smallest man who ever lived.")
Akutagawa was hurt by Dazai. Dazai knows what he did to him, just as Akutagawa knows. As much as they both know this, Dazai is still given the option to live a life in the light, while Akutagawa never gets that chance. At this point, I would say some time during season three, Akutagawa accepted what that man had become. He accepted that he would never get the soft side of Dazai that Atsushi got. He accepted his fate, but that never meant he had to forgive him. The pain would stick with him until his eventual death.
Akutagawa obviously had some heavy contempt for Atsushi when he learned of his relationship with Dazai. Then he saw how he was gentle with him, how he seemed to actually care about Atsushi. Whether he did or not was not on his mind, but the fact that he gave this new person the side of him that he tried so hard to pull out. Personally, I could only imagine that he felt used. He was shaped into a weapon by this man. Meanwhile, Atsushi was given the option to be what he wanted without repercussions.
13. Clara Bow
Clara Bow was a film star who was never given the credit she was owed during her career because of her decaying mental health. Throughout the song, Taylor mentions two famous people, Stevie Nicks and Clara, who had a bout of famousness, but as time went on, they lost their fame.
During the song, Taylor says the words, "The crown is damaged, but you're the real queen. Flesh and blood amongst war machines, you're the new God we're worshipping." Akutagawa essentially worshipped Dazai as if he were a God, and this lyric can show not only this, but how Dazai was renowned in the Mafia, surrounded by those believed to be nothing without what they can do to serve.
On the note that Taylor mentions stars that lost their fame, in the last course of the song, she mentions herself. I believe that this is to insinuate that she will not last much longer in the light, as the two she mentioned before did not last. Similarly, Akutagawa knew he would live a long life because of his lung disease. He knew his life was limited, and when he was killed, he was prepared for it, for he did not have the chance at a life anyway.
This doesn't even include the Anthology songs either. And yes, I know there were a lot of repeated points(i.e. Dazai), but this album was about Taylor's heartbreak and the pain it brought into her normal life, as much as she tried to push it away. I know I some of this could possibly be vague or just plainly incorrect, but I'll gladly try to explain more if it's not detailed enough :3 (and yes I know this took me almost 5 days I just got busy and wanted it to be as detailed as possible 😔)
Anyway, enjoy our glorious Taylor-coded king for reading all of this 🫶

Ok I didn't want to say anything but I need to get this out: don't you think its weird that the anime changed the most meaningful moment between atsushi and aku (and even some small moments such as akutagawa's shock expression when fukuchi tells him to kill atsushi) to make it looks like he doesn't care about atsushi at all(and even added that line of "ango told me everything" taking away atsushi's moment of reflexion in the manga) but then changed that scene of aku and higuchi(which was supposed to be terrifying in the manga) and made it look way more suggestive???
... I think I'm not the right person to ask this to. I mean, I have evident sskk bias, so it's pretty hard to tell whether my judgement is objective or not.
I've considered the scenario the Fukuchi vs. sskk fight was adapted like it was in order to water down the queer subtext - I mean, that scene in the anime does feel straight, in a way the same scene in the manga definitely doesn't -, but in the end I feel like it's too wide of a stretch to say it was done intentionally. It is hard to believe Bones steps away from homoerotic subtext (Dead Apple is literally out there), and it's probably more likely this has just been an instance of sskk being very very unlucky to be adapted in one of the seasons with the least budget destined to them.
I'm not sure what to think about the Higuchi / Akutagawa scene. It was very pretty, definitely better animated than the entirety of the previous episode, but I'm guessing it kept consistent with the quality of the rest of ep 4, so I doubt it got some kind of special treatment? ... And even if it did, idk, I feel like the problem isn't when scenes are animated well, it's when they aren't. The problem shouldn't be the Higuchi / Akutagawa scene being animated well, as much as it should be that all the other episodes should have met the same standard, which they didn't.

Hello o/ i just finished midterm im finally free orz.How are you doing?
I want to asked what do you think about Fukuchi?like his relationship or morality anything in general.Hes such an interesting character i wish ppl talk about him more.
hello! i’m pretty good! finished a read through bsd beast today (fantastic novel btw) and will work on some writing tonight i think!
i hope your midterm went well!! feel free to tell me about it if you’d like :) i’m interested
and ty for asking about fukuchi! i have lots to say about him.
fukuchi - my opinion
first off i will preface this by saying i USED to be a fukuchi hater. he used to really piss me off but looking back it was 100% biased towards the characters he hurt and i didn’t think too much of his motives. i actually really like him now and believe he’s very underrated.
for starters, i LOVE his design. the face scars especially really tie everything together. i also like his silly moustache hehe
his role as a hunting dog was really great and i hope we see more of that—some sort of pre-DoA scenes where we see the hunting dogs work together so i can look into their dynamics more. it seems that he genuinely was a good leader and cared for his squad. he was fun and lighthearted and seemed to be kind to his subordinates.
i really hope we get some sort of scenes where we see him interacting with the other members of the DoA, flashback scenes or something. we only really seen him interact with bram. i feel he would have gotten along well with sigma, since neither of them are bad people. in contrast i want to see him interact with fyodor and nikolai for the very opposite purpose.
i somewhat sympathized with fukuchi when he was fighting atsushi and akutagawa, his view on war clearly messed him up a ton and he just appeared to have a bad approach to solving what was right. i regret to admit i think i let a lot of the general perception of fukuchi hinder my opinion on him here. i understood his motives to a degree but couldn’t like him for that (which has since changed).
i wholeheartedly believe fukuchi is a good person. he is severely traumatized from all the war he had to deal with, which altered his perception on a good approach to solving things.
assuming he is around 45 years old, he would have received the warning of the war at the age of 9. imagine being a small child and realizing you have to save millions from dying? yet throughout it all he kept a great composure and was kind to others. the scenes where he was with fukuzawa as a child showed he was a good kid despite the huge task he would need to complete. this displays immense courage.
now more onto the DoA era.
notice how he turned everyone into vampires instead of just killing them? partially this was likely to build an army, however i assume part of it was to keep people from dying. he doesn’t want any more bloodshed and did what was necessary. he never told anyone about this though, there’s a good chance bram would have been more willing to help had he been open about the plan. maybe?
the way he treated bram wasn’t great though. it would have been cool to see him talk to bram about it and they work together. of course bram didn’t really seem to care too much about humanity before meeting aya, so he may have not agreed.
fukuchi was also incredibly smart for trusting fukuzawa to do what was right. it really shows their bond and how they knew each other. i’d love to look into their dynamics more, especially the scene where fukuchi tries to convince fukuzawa to go to war since there was a ton of symbolism there.
fukuchi and jouno’s bond also intrigues me. we know he invited jouno to the hunting dogs with the goal of him joining the DoA yet jouno was too influenced by good to be able to do it. i wonder if fukuchi would have told jouno the truth in the case that he agreed to join? or did he assume jouno was willing to be a ruthless killer? id like to think that fukuchi believed jouno had the morality to keep the agency safe despite being supposed to act evil; since fukuchi didn’t actually want them dead. ill make a longer analysis about this idea soon actually since it has the little gears in my head turning.
his relationship with tachihara is also interesting to me. i haven’t thought too much into it, but i believe fukuchi said something along of being disappointed in tachihara’s "betrayal". it makes me wonder if maybe he had hoped tachihara’s morality had changed in the mafia so he would never need to face him in battle? i’ll have to reread the chapters and look into this more.
his relationship with teruko also is one that makes me quite sad. she looked heartbroken as she had to kill him. she was also the only one he told other than fukuzawa about his real plan (as far as im aware). they were definitely close.
in the end, fukuchi’s reveal of the truth and everything he had been dealing with for so long made his actions make a ton of sense. he was just a person with a huge responsibility who tried to save things as well as he could. i really wish he could have gotten closure on the world he saved (if he is truly dead). he’s a fantastic character and has a ton of depth. i only scratched the surface here. maybe i will need to make an "in defence of fukuchi" essay at some point.

fukuzawa for the ask game?
YAY OMG MY MIDDLE AGED MAN !!!!!
favorite thing about them
his patience. it’s such an integral part of his character, and it’s what allowed him to bond so closely with Ranpo and the other members of the Agency. plus i love getting to read his internal monologue in Untold Origins as Ranpo annoys the shit out of him and he forces himself to remain calm. that one post that said just like courage isn’t the absence of fear, but moving forward despite it, patience isn’t the absence of annoyance, but remaining kind despite it. him fr
least favorite thing about them
there really isn’t anything i dislike about him. he’s very well written, and most of his flaws are part of his character development. i guess if i had to pick something, it’d be the distance he keeps with his employees. he doesn’t share much with them, and it results in him being revered a bit more intensely than i’d prefer. then again i am biased bc i love found family ADA so fucking much. stop being a heavily respected figure and get your ass out there and be a mother.
favorite line
“I could no longer tell whether I was murdering for my country, or simply for the moment of the kill.”
IT’S??? SUCH A GOOD FUCKING LINE????? when i initially watched his backstory unfold, i really hadn’t expected it to be as intense as it was. this moment is also such a good example of how strong he is mentally. if my memory stands correct, there’s only four characters who stopped killing: Odasaku, Dazai, Akutagawa, and Fukuzawa. of the four, only Fukuzawa stopped entirely of his own volition. the others were influenced by another person (Odasaku by Natsume, Dazai by Odasaku, and Akutagawa by Atsushi.) i’m not saying that it makes any of their own decisions less significant, just saying that it’s fascinating how Fukuzawa was so,, alone in his own redemption, for lack of better terminology. i could rant about this for years but im gonna shut up now
brOTP
i think he and the Café Uzumaki manager are decent friends. other than that, i like to think that he and Haruno are also good friends.
OTP
I’m sorry guys i’m such a sucker for FukuFuku. what do you mean that Fukuchi’s the man Fukuzawa trusts the most in this world. wdym. i’m gonna sob they mean so much to me.
i also fuck w FukuMori but in a “we’re divorced even tho we never got married” kinda way. they met for the very first time and Natsume made them fill out divorce papers
nOTP
there’s so many. anything with him and a member of the Agency, but the most common i see are FukuRan and Fukuzawa/Haruno. fucking nasty
random headcanon
when he was younger, all the grammies absolutely adored him. they thought he was such a sweet young man. Fukuchi has so many stories from their teenage years of them getting stopped mid-outing because the grammies wanted to dote on him.
also would i get flamed for saying trans Fukuzawa
unpopular opinion
HE IS NOT AN OLD MAN HE’S 45 HE’S MIDDLE AGED. HE DOES NOT YET PARTAKE IN OLD MAN YAOI.
song i associate with them
older by Isabel LaRosa WHO SAID THAT. anyways i associate my favorite lullaby with him, Takeda No Komoriuta. it has no lyrical parallels to him, but every time i listen to Japanese Folk songs, my mind always wanders back to him, and this is my favorite of them!!
