Old Hollywood & DC, an unrealistic casting, part I
(More details at the end, cool movies from the actors mentioned in parentheses)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hal Jordan: Richard Arlen (Wings, Beggar's of Life) – the puppy charm and the overwhelming confidence... it's all there, Arlen is also one of the guys in the first gay kiss in film history in Wings, in which he interprets a pilot, I don't think I need to say more
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois Lane: Rosalind Russell (My Girl Friday, The Women) – I mean... it's impossible not to see the resemblance after watching My Girl Friday in which Russell interprets a brilliant journalist going into increasingly insane situations... it's one of the best comedies ever made and very Lois Lane coded
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Stewart: Sidney Poitier (Edge of the City, The Defiant Ones) – Neal Adams used Poitier as an inspiration to model John so this is technically cheating, but look at him! Poitier would not only be perfect for the role in looks but in talent too
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Green Arrow: Errol Flynn (Gentleman Jim) – I admit I'm not a Flynn fan and I'm also not very big on Ollie either, but I do think these two match, Flynn also interpreted Robin Hood and his dramatic role in Gentleman Jim would fit the more drastic moments of Ollie's life
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sinestro: Conrad Veidt (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Hands of Orlac, Different from the Others and anything else you can find with him in it) – Veidt is actually more known for inspiring the creation of the Joker for his film The Man Who Laughs, but he's way more than that, a talented artist, a true queer ally and a babe who would make an outstanding, overdramatic and cunty Sinestro
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zatanna: Louise Brooks (both her G.W. Pabst films are great, and Beggar's Life - with my Hal Jordan from this list) – Brooks made only a handful of films and while they're great, her strong personality in real life is what fascinates me the most, her mysterious beauty, expressive looks and dramatic range would make her an ideal Zatanna, even though her career was very short in real life
This list was inspired by this post (thanks for the idea @forthegothicheroine), it's a very anachronistic imaginary scenario, but I still followed some rules to come up with it, a) to include actors who were mostly active from the 1920s to 1970s b) who not only match the DC characters for their looks, but would also have the range to interpret them in their pre-crisis versions, so the feeling is as important as the aesthetic here c) to only include characters and actors I already had some contact with, by watching the films and reading the comics. This is only part I because there are still so many cool characters and actors I like left, but for now I'm happy with this

honestly idk about you but I loooved the first episode. it was amazing. but I realised I got my hopes up so much in regards to how heavily Tommy is going to be involved in the plane disaster and now I'm pretty sure he's going to be barely in it and icl I'm so disappointed. not with the show and the writers, but with myself 🥲 I guess I wanted to see Tommy in danger a little, perhaps not to the same extent as Athena but in danger nonetheless, ahh 😅 but I'm sure 8x02 and 8x03 are gonna eat either way! I really can't wait to see what they came up with
I absolutely loved it! It hits a nice balance of everything: humor, thrill, frustration, horror, warmth. It's nicely paced and generally a very fun watch. I mentioned last season that the BuckTommy dinner scene in 7x10 felt a bit awkward because they writers seemed to be cramping a lot of information as a setup for S8 in less than a minute. 8x01 managed to catch up with the personal lives of all the mains, foreshadow the obstacles they're going to face, and set up the opening disaster in a few short scenes.
The whole perfume launch call sequence? Chef's kiss. Buck's eureka moment? Buck chasing after Eddie with a few more squirts of perfume? Eddie running in laps around the pool to distract the bees with Flight of the Bumblebee in the background? Monty the beekeeper? Comedy gold.
Don't be so hard on yourself! Isn't part of the fun speculating and imagining what's going to happen on the show? You have your theory, I have mine, the show is most likely going to do a completely different third thing. Think about it, when has the show let us down ever since Tommy's reintroduction? We keep making wrong predictions, but the writers keep giving us something unexpected yet somehow better. Remember we all thought Tommy would rescue Chimney and fly him to the wedding in 7x06? Well, he didn't make his hero entrance, he was just busy fighting a wildfire, but he rushed to the hospital especially for Buck, no one else.
Airport 1975 is very... 70s, I don't think the exact plot would work in 2024 without some major tweaking. The flight attendant managing to keep the plane flying doesn't get nearly enough credit for that, instead the script frames her ex-boyfriend, the flight instructor who repels into the cockpit and lands the plane as the hero. (And everyone from her ex to ATC keeps calling her honey every 3 minutes and talking to her like she's dumb. I'm so glad 8x01 takes a jab at that in its first scene.) Needless to say I'm not a huge fan of the film, other than that big sexy 747 in the classic American Airlines bare metal livery. I hope the 911 remake of that will involve more team work and female pilots.

Such a beauty. Unfortunately I was born too late to see it with my own eyes.
Tommy can still very much be in danger.🙈Whether you believe Tommy can fly a giant airliner or not, he's definitely trained in fighting aircraft fire. It's dangerous, a lot of stuff can suddenly explode. Firefighters have been injured and killed in post crash landing explosions. (Expert in fighting fire with an aircraft AND fighting fire on an aircraft, geez Tommy, leave some expertise for the rest of us.) He might not be the hero who singlehandedly saves everyone in 8x02 and 8x03, but I believe he will be involved in the rescue in some capacity. I mean, it's an airport and the 217 truck is right there.
Feel free to ignore everything I said, anon. Ultimately, we still have fanfiction, so keep playing around with ideas, keep writing, keep reading and have fun!

i need help lol
i have a friend who i know, deep in my soul, would fucking love MASH but she won't start watching it. I think it's because the sheer amount of episodes there are can be intimidating so: if you have to pick, whats your top five MASH episodes to introduce someone to it
Chief Surgeon Who?
Tuttle
O.R.
Adam's Ribs
Dear Sigmund
This was really hard... I put them here in chronological order. Before I finally settled on Tuttle I considered a lot of different episodes.
I am very firm in Chief Surgeon Who?. I personally really like the pilot and think it's a good pilot, but not everyone agrees. Chief Surgeon Who? is early enough to introduce the characters effectively and the storyline about Hawkeye being made chief surgeon is a good primer for the dynamics, but it's a couple episodes in so things are smoothed out that weren't in the pilot. Bonus for being Klinger's first appearance.
I landed on Tuttle because it's a great episode that's also characteristic of certain aspects of the show. It's this episode that shows Hawkeye and Trapper casually and gleefully stealing from and defrauding the army for the benefit of the orphanage and getting away with it. If you wanted to sub this one with something else I wouldn't be appalled. I'll mention some others I considered at the end.
O.R. is an absolute must. It's a brilliant episode and shows the war and surgery aspects of the show extremely well. Probably the single best episode in my opinion.
I always think Adam's Ribs is a good starter because it's super funny but also, when they have to pull Hawkeye away from those ribs, you feel it somehow in a way you don't get from serious depictions of war. He's so close to some kind of relief and just has it snatched away, by war.
I'm not as wedded to Dear Sigmund either but I really wanted to get at least one from season 4 or later and I think this one is a nice showcase of the cast circa season 5. It's basically Alan Alda's essay on all the characters. And as a bonus, it features Sidney! It's also a good mix of funny and Making Points with the bomber pilot storyline, and it makes practical jokes, which are a recurring part of the show, a more explicit part of the story which is good for introduction purposes.
I wanted to introduce the whole cast, but I prioritized giving a broad view of the series as a whole and showcasing different things the show can do with my picks. I just couldn't find a season 7-11 episode that I thought did that well enough to justify its place in a five episode primer.
A few I seriously considered, why, and why I decided against them:
Yankee Doodle Doctor: this is a super fun episode and it basically tells you the entire deal of the show when the in-universe film switches from slapstick comedy to Hawkeye monologuing about the horrors of war directly into the camera. Ultimately, though, I think that's only apparent to someone already deeply invested, so to a new viewer it's mostly just a fun episode, and while it is fun, I think Tuttle and Adam's Ribs serve that purpose better in a primer.
Sometimes You Hear the Bullet: it was a turning point in the show for sure, but as an episode I think it's just good and not great, and I think it's redundant to include in a list of only five that already contains O.R. O.R has a death scene too and I think it's the superior "serious" episode and more important to include.
5 O'Clock Charlie: Just a classic, fan favorite funny episode. I think it gives some good insight into the tone and dynamics, but I think Tuttle and Adam's Ribs are more important funny episodes to include. This is definitely a good one for early in a watch though!
For the Good of the Outfit: I almost included this one just because it's so important, but I think it's better appreciated once someone is hooked, and I don't think watching it early necessarily communicates the political side of MASH to someone unfamiliar. It's not easily attention-grabbing the way Tuttle is in my opinion, though I think it's great.
Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde: it's one of the best examples of the "blorbo angst" genre of MASH episode and it's early enough to be funny at the same time--I think the physical comedy of Hawkeye's sleep-deprived antics juxtaposed with the concern both you and the other characters feel is peak--plus there's other important stuff going on with Hawkeye's telegram to Truman and the overall absurdity of just letting the war go on. But ultimately I don't think it quite makes a first five cut, it's more effective if you're a little familiar with the characters.
Deal Me Out: super great episode, also includes Sidney, technically introduces Flagg but he's not Flagg yet. It just didn't quite make the cut for a list of five.
Aid Station: I was really just going to include this one because it's the first visit to the front, but there was enough of that era of the show already.
The Late Captain Pierce: great episode, incredible guest performance with Digger, but I think it's more effective if you're already attached to Hawkeye.
The Interview: the best episode of season 4 without a doubt, but I just don't think it makes sense to show an experimental episode in the first five, even if it would introduce a new viewer to fact that MASH did those. I don't think t works nearly as well if you don't know the show and characters already.
