HIPAA sets the standards for protecting sensitive patient information and ensuring its confidentiality and integrity. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of HIPAA compliance and why Securium Solutions should be your go-to partner in achieving it.
Understanding HIPAA - What is it?
HIPAA, which stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, is a federal law enacted in 1996 to safeguard individuals' medical information. The Significance of HIPAA Compliance
Healthcare organizations and their business associates are required by law to adhere to HIPAA regulations. Achieving HIPAA compliance is crucial for several reasons:
Data Security: HIPAA mandates the implementation of stringent security measures to protect electronic health records (EHRs) from unauthorized access or breaches.

Legal Obligation: Non-compliance can result in severe penalties, including hefty fines and legal actions.

Also an elderly patient the other day was throwing herself a pity party about how she doesn’t have anyone to drive her to eye surgery. And while I was talking about how okay there are some local volunteer organizations that—she cut me off to bemoan her terrible childhood, and then started grilling me. “How old are you? Do you have children? Why not? Who’s going to take care of you when you’re old?”
Her point was supposed to be that having alcoholic parents fucked her up for life. Which, fair! But assuming that the person you’re talking to had a GOOD childhood? Buddy, no. By the end of the visit she was apologizing to ME, unclear whether for my shitty life or for asking overly personal questions.
I was just SO angry. It’s like when chronic pain patients just blithely buy in to the “invulnerable doctor” myth and talk to me as if I am not One Of Us. “You couldn’t possibly understand—“ bitch want to bet? Don’t pull that shit! Don’t assume that you know someone’s backstory! The more you meet people, the more utterly BANANAS backstories you will encounter. The idea of a “normal person” with a normal family and a normal life is rare to the point where you can safely assume you will never encounter it.
And don’t ever try to use your assumptions about someone who is talking to you as a weapon. Because if you say “now have YOU ever—“ to score points, there are decent odds you’re going to force someone to choose whether to answer a REALLY inappropriate question or lie or make the whole thing awkward by saying they’d rather not answer.
I often think about a post I was reading from a man who got asked “have YOU ever been raped?” by a woman acquaintance who was trying to win a fight, and he had to decide whether to say yes, actually, this one thing he’s been struggling with is probably—and she cut him off mid answer anyway to assume he was going to answer the way she expected and carry forward her fight from there.
Patients are allowed to make it all about them. If they want to wallow a little, that’s fair. Their life probably did suck. But they are not allowed to make my personal life all about them. That’s inappropriate and disrespectful boundary crossing that’s also counterproductive, because it takes time away from their issues, and time is about ten bucks a minute in your average doctor visit in the US.
She talked so much about why I don’t have kids that she never got to hear me finish saying that we could look into connecting her with local volunteer organizations.

Do Clerics have like. Doctor-patient confidentiality in general?
Tumblr media
[Shrek meme: "They don't even have HIPAA"]
Nope. ZERO protections babey, the Cleric is a tiny Pope without a funny hat. They can do whatever they want unless the OTHER unaccountable religious cult leader decides to do something about it.
Cats like Featherwhisker, Spottedleaf, Runningnose, and Jayfeather are hit with realizations about this. For a few simple restrictions... you have nearly unquestionable power. You answer directly to StarClan. The amount of influence you have over a Clan is actually kind of insane.
The "Leader's Rights" and "Cleric's Vow" commandments were attempts to reign in the power of Clerics, with a lot of collateral damage. The Cleric is only overruled by the direct command of a leader, which means that the Cleric can ALWAYS act first unless the Leader pre-empts them.
Pearstar was a Cleric who violently overthrew Morningstar, before the invention of the Leader's Rights. The Leader's Rights were created in response to Larkstripe's Cleric Strike.

Working on my smut fic and this bit still makes me giggle.
After mess ended the Tire Trine walked back to Ricochet's quarters. Breakdown and Knock Out had other plans tonight, and when they invited her along Ricochet declined, feigning work needing to be done.
"Yeah, sure," Knock Out teased. Then he leaned in and whispered. "By the way, [Starscream] has a clean bill of health if you get my drift, so feel free to get as dirty as you'd like."
Ricochet blushed as Breakdown pulled Knock Out away with mutterings of Doctor-Patient Confidentiality.

A patient who thought I was “laughing and gossiping” about her came back today to speak to my boss, my boss’ boss, the director of the department, etc and said she’s going to go all the way to the president of the hospital to ensure I get fired. I’ve been stressed to hell about it, but the one upside is that dozens of people who work in my departments, some I don’t even talk to that much, have approached me to say they’ll defend me and that I have nothing to worry about. And it feels like the ending of MLP where everyone they ever befriended shows up to help them defeat the bad guys

You know how when somebody steals your debit card information, they'll sometimes make a series of very small purchases to check if your card works? Like $1-$5? Somebody did that to me this weekend and I had so little money in my account that they managed to overdraft it just doing that.
Fortunately I use a credit union that won't hit me with nightmare fees for a fraudulent overdraft, and I'm housing/food secure, so instead of this being a huge deal it's an exhausting but ultimately minor annoyance. I am also mildly entertained by the thought of whoever this was going to the effort of getting my card info only to buy a couple of songs/apps/gacha pulls or whatever on the apple store and immediately running out of money. Hope you got your my money's worth, buddy.

I’m fucking disabled
#I had this conversation with my therapist last week. I’ll give you the secret HIPAA breaking rundown#I HATE calling myself disabled#I don’t know why. there’s no shame in it. it’s just ya know it’s just what I am#but I still can’t get it into my head that yes I’m kinda fucking disabled#because here I am sitting on this creaky futon unable to understand anything anyone is saying to me bc my hearing is so bad#it’s a bad hearing day! it happens! some days are good! today is very much not so good!#so I told my therapist I’m way cool with telling people I have mental health issues#but when it comes to hearing it’s ‘oh no I’m not REALLY disabled. I just uhhhhh can’t uhhh fuckin hear sometimes 🤷🏻‍♂️ that’s normal right?’#and he’s like no my sweet boy you are disabled you need to own that shit#okay… he didn’t say it like that but this is my flashback please let me have this#let me be a sweetie boy in my own mind#he said it’s usually the reverse: people don’t like to admit mental health issues but will mention physical disabilities#I just… I spent 30 something years with great hearing and then it all just got taken from me out of the blue and no one knows why#and I hate that. I’m so angry. I’m so fucking angry and scared and alone#and I hate admitting that yes I am disabled. like really disabled. it feels like defeat.#and it shouldn’t. like I said it’s just kinda what I am now. It’s like saying I breathe or I’m allergic to birds. it just is me.#sorry I’m just having a rough day#I got about an hour of sleep and now I’m holding down the fort while a home inspector and the new buyer look through the house#and I can’t talk to either of them. I can’t understand them talking to each other. it’s isolating.#I have therapy later and I’m hoping I’ll be able to communicate and hear during it. I really just need someone to talk to#I miss talking to people in person. I can still do that it just can take a bit of work and I hate subjecting people to putting up with me#I feel so needy. I just want some human connection. I want to know I can still make this work.#gosh this is whiny. sorry about that. just needed a quick vent to get me through the next few hours#anyway I love you. probably. maybe… ehhh#you can ignore this#text
