Watching House right now for the first time and I have no idea how people call that man a sociopath, he's literally just autistic.

I hate it when people critique love never dies and phantom of manhattan by saying Gustave/Pierre acts autistic because my brother in Christ how do you think Erik figured out the kid was his.

I know I (and many other artists) tend to draw a version of myself that doesn’t really exist, so here’s a vague approximation of what I really look like.

I had an interesting question!
!!For people with autism only!!
First of all what term do you call yourself?
And second: Do you agree that as a person with autism you can choose how you refer to yourself? Or what term you feel comfortable with? And that even if you don't agree with it or wouldn't call yourself that way, it's valid for the other person to call themselves what they want?
(Aspergers, high functioning, low functioning, autistic, person with autism,....)
P.S. I'm not here to judge, so don't judge me or anyone else, I am legit interested and I like asking these kinda questions and hearing people's thoughts!

here to teach you tone tags as i whole heartedly belive they would fix your autistic ass
these are things you add onto the end of a sentence online so someone can read teh tone of the sentence cuz that can be difficult to convey online
/j = joking /srs = being serious /hj = half joking /pos = in a positive way /neg = in a negative way /sarc or /s = being sarcastic /nf = not forced or no pressure
those r all teh ones i can think of YOU'RE WELCOME
I’m literally too old to have ‘Autism’ but okay.
But- nevertheless, thanks for explaining. I can finally understand what you people are saying.

I feel like if anybody on King of the Hill is on the Spectrum, it's Hank. His entire character screams Asperger's. I say this as an Aspie myself. I see a lot of myself in him, what with his lack of good social skills, his propensity to get bothered by extremely minor things, and his hyperfixation on things like propane. This show came out in 1997, when asperger's was pretty much unheard of, meaning he was likely written this way on complete accident. For some reason, this makes it feel even better.

Note
this is coming from someone on both spectrums (diagnosed): please try low-dose naltrexone or get a stellate ganglion block before you take shrooms. autistic people are more prone to developing psychotic disorders than allistic people. lsd is way safer if you must try a psychedelic.
anon you gotta know i am talking out of my ass ive never even smoked weed, again because of my old lady soul. I also probably would accidentally try to buy from a cop posing as a dealer because i'm bad at recognizing subtle things. or wait it usually goes the other way around right? I'm not worldly is what i'm saying

Controversial autism post of the day:
On the term "Aspergers": Yes, we all know Hans Asperger was a Nazi. Yes, we all know that the term "Asperger's Syndrome" is out of date and hasn't been in the DSM for more than a decade. That being said, if there are older autistics who wanna call themselves "aspies" or say that they have "Asperger's", then that's their choice. You shouldn't necessarily call them out or correct them for it. Sometimes that's what they're comfortable with. Maybe it's just more comfortable for them to say that then it is to say "autism" or "ASD" or "level 1 autism" or "high functioning autistic disorder" or any other label.
Source: am autistic. Was lucky enough to be diagnosed at 3, despite being female, back when they called my condition "Asperger's" as it applied to me. I personally use autistic or ASD, but I won't be offended if you call it Asperger's. Sometimes I even say "aspie" to refer to myself, even.
This is kind of similar to the trans debate. One of my older friends is trans (MTF) and has been a woman for a long time now. But she still says (pardon my language) "transsexual" as opposed to the more politically-correct term "transgender", simply because she says that it was the term she was given when she was young and she doesn't feel the need to change it. She usually just says "trans", though. And honestly? More power to her. I'm not going to correct her if that's how she personally identifies. That's her choice, I guess.

I just had a bit of a revelation that I wanted to share with y’all…
I was thinking about how when I was a kid, I was able to keep up with my peers in school, thinking everything was fine and dandy, but as I got older and neared the end of college and the imminent joining of the workforce, I was no longer able to keep up with other adults. Around this time, I was diagnosed with level 1 Autism (née Asperger’s), something I had my whole life, but wasn’t identified until I was a senior in college. I started to wonder why I started out so well, but essentially got almost to the finish line only to crash and burn (repeatedly; I kept trying and failing).
Well, here’s where my sudden revelation today came in: I realized life can kind of be compared to the Pacer test. Now, if you’ve never had to run the Pacer, first of all f*ck you, but basically, you have to run from one side of the gym to the other before the beep, and if you don’t, you’re out. It starts out with the beeps being quite a bit of time apart, but then they keep getting closer and closer together until most of the kids have been eliminated. So you can start out leisurely walking across the gym, and twenty beeps later be sprinting for dear life. Some kids make it farther than others. (Curse you, athletic people.)
Here’s how that applies to my life – I started out in elementary school being one of the more advanced kids, top of my class and always finishing work on time and done well. By high school, it was sometimes difficult to get assignments all completed by their deadlines, but I was still able to handle things and succeed. Then, by my final semester of college (so I thought), not too long after being diagnosed as autistic, I made it a month through student teaching before finally coming to terms with the reality that I wasn’t able to take over all of my host teacher’s duties and would not graduate with a teaching degree.
Wait, what?
When did I go from sailing through school to having epic breakdowns because I just couldn’t keep up?
But life was like the Pacer test. I started out doing well because the beeps were far apart and everyone was able to keep up. Then they started getting closer and closer together until I was sprinting to the end line and barely making it before the beep, eventually realizing I had just been eliminated. I was still the same me, with the same intelligence and same abilities, but life had been speeding up faster than I realized and I was forced to admit I wasn’t one of the athletic kids who keep going even after most of their peers drop out.
And I think that that’s okay. Some people can only make it so far doing the Pacer because that’s just their ability. That’s how they work and it doesn’t make them less of a person. I can only work a job where the beeps aren’t so close together, even though the people around me can keep up with the rest of the class.
I don’t know who else needs to hear this, but the analogy resonated with me and I hope maybe it resonates with someone else.

Me: "oh yeah i don't have the trauma of associating orange soda with throwing up* because i refused to drink any soda until i was like 13 since i didn't like the bubbles"
My friend: "ha! autism!" (she's autistic and it was all in good fun)
Me: "well fuck"
*it's a finnish tradition to give to kids with a stomach bug, probably since the sugar at least gives you some energy
