i think the wording of sam finding the magnus institute a “blast from the past” suspicious so these are my theories

1 - he used to work there, i think not very likely because why take another job the same after that. if he did then it wouldn’t have been in the archives, maybe research or artefact storage - especially because his first instinct is it research more. however, he asks about it so he doesn’t really know a lot , therefore unlikely

2 - he left a statement. i think most likely because plenty of people would leave statements not really knowing anything about the place. he also believes what norris and chester (love those guys) say so has probably had an experience with the fears before

3 - he knew someone who worked there before it burned down, that person maybe had the typical bad experiences that come with the archives and he saw it happening from the outside

4 - i have a few vague thoughts that maybe he was going to take a job there then didn’t, asked for information from the library as a student or witnessed it burn down but his wording makes me think it was more personal for him , he had an emotional connection to it at some point.
