What lumen games would you recommend?

Ooh! There's honestly a ton of great ones out there to check out, so here's a short-ish list of some LUMEN games that I have some experience with!

Monster Guts from @ostermad-blog is great take on Monster Hunter style boss fights.

In Extremis from @keganexe is necromancers in space! (I also wrote a class for the expansion)

Lumen Ryder is, like the name suggests, a Kamen Rider inspired game.

Apocalypse Frame from @binarystargames does some awesome mech stuff.

I've only had the chance to read Firmament from @corsairesix, but ough, the vibes are killer.

Spencer (Gila RPGs), who created the LUMEN engine is also working on LUMEN 2.0 that shifts the whole thing to a diceless framework, which you can see the start of in Dusk and Thorn, if you wanted to see the latest in LUMEN development.

I've also released two LUMEN games myself, Vibe Check (TWEWY inspired) and Paktbound (Dishonored inspired), so I do have to plug those hahaha

More and more sources are starting to talk about a potential Kingdom Hearts movie.

The above image is a tweet from The Hollywood Handle stating: A 'KINGDOM HEARTS' movie is rumored to be in development at Disney. Their source is The DisInsider, which I will link to below in the comments section. The image they show is of the KH1 cover.

Now, I'm someone who is actually fairly intrigued by the idea, but I do think that (if they wanted to follow the series from Sora's POV) than a TV series would be the better option than a movie. Afterall, a movie is very limiting in its runtime.

There are some fans out there that think that, if this movie turns out to be true, it would be something connected to Union X or the mobile games, take place after KH4, or just be an original story that takes place between games (vaguely). But...let's be honest, it is going to be an adaptation of KH1. That makes the most sense as a way to appeal to the masses and introduce a whole new subset of potential fans and viewers to the franchise and series as whole.

When I looked at the comments, tweets, retweets, quotes, etc. on this above tweet talking about a potential and rumored KH movie, everyone is assuming that the movie would be from Sora's POV and that Sora would be the lead like in the games. But, what if they were to shake things up a bit?

What if a potential movie adaptation of KH1 followed Riku instead of Sora? It would make sense in a lot of ways:

Riku interacts solely with Disney characters. Sora interacts with Disney and Square characters (in KH1, Riku does eventually interact with some square characters like TWEWY characters, but if I was adapting the KH games into a movie franchise, I would keep the adaptations to KH1, COM, and KH2 only. It ends nicely with 2 and doesn't get too convoluted yet). But, getting back on track, this movie adaptation would be a Disney movie. So keeping the focus more on Disney only would make the most sense.

Riku interacts with the Disney villains, who have a HUGE appeal to many people, especially the Disney Renaissance villains and classic villains like Maleficent.

Riku visits Disney worlds, but not nearly as many as Sora in KH1. His story is also more focused and easier to condense down into a two hour movie, a two hour movie told from Sora's POV would require a lot more cutting down.

A KH1 retelling from Riku's POV would freshen up the experience for long time KH fans. It would make the movie a more interesting and unique experience. Plenty of fans have also expressed interest in the past of seeing the series / games from Riku's POV.

It would allow the movie to go darker and do something a bit different from the usual Disney formula.

This rumor may amount to nothing, and this speculation on my part will likely remain nothing more than a pipedream, but approaching a KH1 movie adaptation from this angle would actually be really interesting to me and hold a lot of potential to do something a bit out of the box. So, it will probably never happen, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this regardless. Feel free to add anything you want to this as well (additional thoughts, tags, comments, etc.).

... Okay actually I was gonna leave it as a 'someone poke me later' while reblogging this and then I wrote it in the tags, I ALREADY WROTE THAT PARAGRAPH AND YET. Want to hear more thoughts about Quote B? Of course you do.

So like the thing I always find especially great about this line is.

It's one of the ones Neku thinks back on in the ending cutscene before his "I'm glad I met you guys." And that makes sense, all of them are important moments, this is an emotional turning point, the one immediately after it is Shiki's "Once you see the real me, will we still be friends?" before he continues. But that also means emotionally I always consider it in the context of the closing monologue.

And like I said, up to this point "Trust your Partner" has been a through-line of the game. It's Neku reminding himself he has to even when he doesn't want to (because he's an asshole,) or because his Partner's clearly clueless but doubling down on something SO HARD in the desperate hope that will make it true because otherwise he has no idea what he's doing (and Beat has like, no self-esteem about his own intelligence at this point,) or because his Partner is literally the shadiest person imaginable and may have actually killed Neku (in addition to tying Neku in the Most Insufferable 15-Year-Old In Human History contest.) Since the player themselves also notices that Joshua's shady as hell and Beat's got no idea in those moments, we ALSO need the reminder.

And the end of Week Two really validates it, because after spending the whole week suspecting Joshua and the last few days gritting his teeth because they're stuck together, Neku suddenly finds out that surprise! Joshua DIDN'T kill Neku after all. He was innocent. It's the guy who's currently trying to kill them. (For... some reason, but then Neku can't figure out at first why JOSHUA would kill him, either.) And then Joshua sacrifices himself for Neku's sake. Neku feels guilty. WE feel guilty, because the big twist at the end works as well as it does because it's also playing the audience. Neku straight-up thinks that it's his fault Joshua sacrificed himself, and that if Neku hadn't accused him, he wouldn't have felt like he had to do it. This is what not trusting your partner does, the game says.

And on top of that we enter Week Three with Beat, who, one, has negative poker face, but two, WAS an ally in the early part of the game. He and Shiki were friends! When his Partner Rhyme was erased, we were horrified and sad! The first end-of-week boss is initiated in part because Beat's off on his own and Shiki and Neku are worried about him. He joins the Reapers, and we still don't know why until later in the week, and gets ordered to attack Neku, but now Neku has improved enough as a person that he wanted to try again, and he returns a pendant left behind by Rhyme (who turns out to be his sister) because it was clearly important to Beat. (And then when Beat leaves he has a sad little "... Bye Beat." thought that just HURTS.) In short, we have no trouble trusting him.

So at some point fairly early in Week Three, probably Day Three at latest (when Beat explains why he joined the Reapers - to save Rhyme - and asks Neku for help and Neku basically goes "no you don't have to ask me for help, OF COURSE I want to,") "Partner" basically becomes synonymous with "friend" where Neku's concerned. Shiki went from an annoyance he tried to kill to believably the thing he valued most. The moments where he wasn't suspecting or irritated by Joshua, they understood each other better than anyone else. (... Except for the part where Joshua would end every talk about the fundamental impossibility of truly knowing someone with "So that's why it's not worth trying and also I'd get rid of people entirely :)" and Neku would immediately go "wait what no.") He and Beat are now bros. Of COURSE Neku trusts his Partners.

Only for Beat to suddenly flip the script at the last minute. "Partner" isn't synonymous with friend. Friends are more important, and Neku's one of his. Beat's not fighting with Neku because he has to as part of the Game, he's doing it because he WANTS to. (Also because this guy's trying to destroy the city by brainwashing everyone in it and making them think a creepy monologue over and over again forever, but like. Details, y'know?) In fact, by this point the formal Game is over - they don't know yet that they're still caught in a bigger one. Technically, they AREN'T Partners anymore. But why would that matter?

Even when Neku uses the concepts almost-synonymously in the closing monologue, that's still fresh in our minds. And there's a fair bit of separation between "Trust your Partner, and I do" and the actual closing words: Neku excitedly saying that he has friends now who he's about to meet, inviting Joshua to join them, and Beat and Rhyme calling him over.

He started out as a really unlikable misanthrope, forcing a third party to stop him from killing his first partner and telling him to trust the one person he needs to survive. It's three weeks later, and Neku's been EXTREMELY tested in this, but has also grown tremendously as a person. By this point, "Trust your partner" has come up a lot - it's basically Neku's motto by now - and the actual player's needed to remind themselves of this often, too. Beat met Neku at the start of those three weeks, and hated his guts, since Neku was terrible. But Neku's a lot better, and Beat was faced with a moral crisis that led to him becoming Neku's third partner. Things look bad when Beat and Shiki burst in to save the day. Shiki teases Neku for going ahead while they were out of commission, bringing up the "trust your partner" line again... and Beat says this in response. this is all making wish i had liveblogged khux when i first watched it… it was three years ago now i was beginning to slowly get sucked into the kh vortex bc all my twewy mutuals were returning to their roots after the twewy renaissance hype was beginning to die down… and one of the most intriguing things to me was the possession murder plot in the mobile game i guess. also bc even back in like june some people i followed were posting about some crazy finale thing where we were actually xehanort and dead children became cute cats or whatever? i was like hm ok Something happened here but i wasn’t about to touch it until like the fall. i used to scroll through the khux tag and try to figure out what people were talking about via osmosis. then one day i was like screw it let’s watch this six hour movie in one evening. two sittings. my sanity slowly slipping away as the sun did. complete nuclear bomb on my brain. i wasn’t really an established solid blogger back then i didn’t know if anyone followed me for kh bc i was only just starting to post about it so i didn’t liveblog it. but how i wish i had documentation of it now…

Two whole sittings…….lord. I can’t even imagine how wild that night that must’ve been for you. Just a rapid fire of neurons as you just take in all that info all at once. Going from vague osmosis understanding to complete context and boundless lore blasted into your eyeballs in the span of a few hours…unfathomable…incredible…legendary

As a fan of your commentary and reactions, I do also wish you’d liveblogged it, but at the same time, I completely understand!! You guys have no idea how much I think about vanitas. It's incredible I haven't posted more about kingdom hearts in general actually. but i think that's mostly because the only kh thing i think about is a massive au that is Such an undertaking that i dont really want to have to bother explaining it more than once akshfalksda

unfortunately, persona 5 left a huge impact on me when i was in high school. i wish that game was actually good for the hold that it still has over me.

i experienced twewy when i was an edgy middle schooler (hes a bit older, granted, but. lol just like neku) and it changed me forever. (i only said "and neo" bc i really like his design in neo it inspired me to use my adult money to go out and buy clothes that i actually like and not just wear whatever i still had of stuff my mom got me when i was in high school)

my favorite character of all time ever is my own blorbo salem jastres who is my oc ive had for nearly over a decade at this point. i have literally considered changing my last name to his whenever i get it legally changed. he is the guy i absentmindedly doodle in notebook margins. because i used him for a dnd campaign, i've got two versions of him running around and im equally obsessed with both. my friends jokingly accused me of kinning him. i literally never stop thinking about him. i HAD to give him some sort of mention here. but he's not a real option hes just the "i dont know these guys / i dont care / i just want to see the results" option

some honorable (or not so honorable, depending) mentions include: chai from hi-fi rush, zangetsu from bleach (hollow zangetsu), junpei tenmyouji from zero escape, and jak from jak and daxter (fun fact: zangetsu is the dishonorable mention i have a love/hate relationship with bleach)
